Buchwald draws big audience to Historic Palace Theatre for Rockin’ Chirstmas show By Rachel Fuerschbach THE STAR CORRESPONDENT

Members from all over Western New York came out to the Historic Palace Theatre Dec. 20 in order to hear the iconic Elvis impersonator Terry Buchwald perform his Rockin’ Christmas show. Buchwald has been working with promoter Gary Chapman for seven years putting on these Christmas shows for the Lockport community in order to spread the Christmas joy. The first show started as a fundraiser to raise money for the New Year’s Eve fireworks and then turned into an annual event to bring people to downtown Lockport and get them in the holiday spirit. “I love [coordinating] this show,” Chapman said. “I just love seeing everyone happy and smiling.” The show brought in between 300 and 500 people from all over Western New York, southern Tier, Hamburg and Rochester areas as well as Buchwald’s entire family.

Breathtaking is the best word to describe last Saturday morning’s events as Robert Humbert, vice president of the Association for Wild Animal Rehabilitation and Education Inc., (AWARE), successfully released a snowy owl back into the wild. This majestic creature has sharp yellow eyes and white feathers with varying amounts of black/brown markings on its body and wings. The owl was given a second chance by AWARE as it soared effortlessly into the sky, now uninjured. AWARE, a non-profit, was founded more than 25 years ago and is a group of dedicated people who rescue and rehabilitate wild animals in New York State. This all volunteer group cares for orphaned, injured, and distressed wildlife such as birds, including owls, hawks, and falcons, mammals, and on occasion reptiles and amphibians. Animals that are considered Rabies Vector Species (RVS) such as raccoons, skunks, and bats are the only animals AWARE does not care for, because they require a special license and caging and there is already a high volume of animals they

Terry Buchwald has been entertaining audiences around the country for over 23 years. “I just love coming to his shows,” said Pat Darling, a fan. “I love the whole package—the people we meet and seeing Terry perform. He’s very down to earth and just nice person.” Darling who had just

Caring for the snowy owl since Dec. 6, Humbert, who is licensed to handle these types of animals, said the owl was found in a field on Ledge Road in Pembroke by a Lockport resident, who then contacted him to care for the owl. While he is not positive on what happened to the owl he believes the owl may have been hit by a car, causing it to go down in the field. Due to the field being heavily manured, the owl had manure underneath it’s wing. “It couldn’t fly,” remarked Humbert. “It was probably tired and a little sore. It was wet and just enough manure was on him where he couldn’t sustain flight.” Humbert added the owl probably would have died if it wasn’t for the resident who found the owl. Because the owl was previously tagged in January of 2014, Humbert was able to learn where the owl came from, how old he was, and gender. The male owl came from Pavillon, N.Y. and is 2 years old. To get the owl ready to go back home, Humbert had the difficult task of bathing him with a little Dawn dish soap to clean the manure off, which isn’t normally something that should be done, but

Paula Iacono, previously a ballet dancer trained in Boston, Mass. and a member of the Imperial Society of teachers opened her own ballroom center to teach members of the community how to dance. “I wanted to build a unique place for people to come and create a hobby,” Iacono said. Iacono has been teaching dance at her current location for over six years where she works with people of all ages from 20 to 70 years old and of all levels of dance as well. Iacono first started her dancing career at five years old when she was enrolled in dance lessons and loved the feeling of freedom she felt when dancing. “I love the expression and the art form,” Iacono said. “I think it’s amazing to be able to do things with my body and express one’s self.” Today, Iacono wants to share that love for dance through her students by teaching them varieties of dances including but not limited to ballroom, Latin, salsa, swing and traditional waltz. Iacono obtains students of all professions whether they are a doctor, lawyer, accountant or just the average college student as well as a variety of couples and singles. “Dancing is very in the moment,” Iacono explained. “When you are dancing that’s all you’re thinking about. That’s why this hobby is very important to those who work stressful jobs.” Iacono explains that dancing has several health benefits to it that attracts the average person. These benefits include exercise, weight loss, a way to de-stress, to have more fun and to meet people. Dancing also benefits the dancer cognitively by improving memory and focus by engaging both sides of the brain simultaneously and emotionally/psychologically by releasing endorphins, improving one’s mood, relieving stress, having more fun, enjoying attending social events and become more outgoing.

His admiration for the King of Rock began at a young age stemming from his mother who would listen to Elvis and 50’s music. Since then, Buchwald began to sing all Elvis songs ranging from country to Rock n Roll and learning the iconic Elvis moves. At this year’s performance, Buchwald changed his set up coming out as the young Elvis wearing a pink suit coat followed by a black and red suit with high boots, then closed the show with a country look of jeans, a button down shirt and a Christmas cowboy hat. “I love coming back to the Palace,” Buchwald said. “It’s a great place to play and it’s the type of theatre that Elvis used to play in.” Buchwald performed a variety of Elvis hits including the first Elvis song he ever performed Blue Christmas along with others such as Hound Dog, dreaming of a white Christmas, Silver bells, Santa Baby, Blue Suede Shoes and Run, run Rudolph. Let’s keep impaired drivers off the road In every state, it’s illegal to drive with a blood alcohol content of .08 or higher, yet some people seem to think their above the law and get behind the wheel anyway. Tragically, some of those drivers — or innocent victims simply sharing the road

— don’t make it home. While the holiday season is a special time to celebrate with family and friends, we must remain aware that it’s also a time when crashes caused by alcohol- or drugimpaired drivers increase dramatically.

For something so serious, the solution is quite simple. Before you attend that office party or holiday open house, make a plan to get home safely. If you plan on drinking, designate a sober driver ahead of time and leave your keys at home, or program

the phone number of a reliable friend or local taxi service to your phone. And, help others be responsible, too. If someone you know is drinking, do not let that person get behind the wheel! As someone who works with individuals convicted of

alcohol- and drug-related driving violations, you can believe me when I tell you that they will thank you for taking the time to care. Sitting around the holiday table with family and friends is a great time. Sitting in the back of a police car is not.

Be proactive and plan ahead, and let’s keep impaired drivers off the road this holiday season and beyond! Monica A. Farrar Program Director The Resource Training Center

Industrial wind factories destroy the environment and more Considering the history of complete and utter civil discord created by Big Wind projects in rural New York State (NYS) communities over the past decade -- and the fact that industrial wind is a net economic and environmental loser -- Orleans & Niagara County residents should be alarmed by Apex’s proposed wind factory. The Industrial Wind industry was initiated in the U.S. under the pretense that it would significantly reduce CO2 emissions, and thereby help avoid Global Warming. Yet, 30 years into subsidizing the building of wind factories off the backs of taxpayers and ratepayers has proven otherwise.

CPOWNY

READERS

BY THE NUMBERS

With approximately 250,000 industrial wind turbines installed worldwide today, CO2 emissions have NOT been significantly reduced, nor has a single conventional generation plant been decommissioned anywhere thanks to industrial wind. As Manhattan Institute scholar Robert Bryce said: “Wind Turbines Are Climate-Change Scarecrows.” Industrial wind provides NO Capacity Value (aka: Firm Capacity - specified amounts of power on demand). Thus, wind turbines need constant “shadow capacity” from our reliable, dispatchable baseload generators - that is, if you want

to be sure the lights will come on when you flick the switch. Thus, wind generation actually locks us into dependence on fossil fuels, and as Big Wind CEO, Patrick Jenevein candidly admitted, “Consumers end up paying twice for the same product.” Consider this reality: One 450 MW gas-fired Combined Cycle Generating Unit located at New York City (NYC) - where the power is needed in NYS, would provide more power than all of NYS’s 16 installed wind factories combined, at 1/4 of the capital costs -- and would have significantly reduced CO2 emissions and created

far more jobs than all those wind farms – without all the added costs (economic, environmental, and civil) of all the transmission lines that must be added across the state to NYC. Industrial Wind has proven to be effective only as a tax shelter generator for large corporations in search of an increased bottom line - just as it was originally designed to do by ENRON, the trailblazer for Big Wind in the U.S. As Warren Buffett candidly admitted, “We get tax credits if we build ‘windfarms.’ That’s the only reason to build them. They don’t make sense otherwise.” Property values are signif-

icantly negatively-impacted, as are peoples’ personal health and quality of life by the resonant ground vibrations, flashing red lights, shadow flicker, TV interference, noise (ie: infrasound), etc., that is generated by these giant bird-and-batchopping machines. Just ask the citizens of Orangeville in Wyoming County, who are now suing Invenergy for $40 Million dollars! Likewise, the Wisconsin Board of Health recently declared Duke Energy’s wind turbines a “Human Health Hazard.” The fact that American citizens are being assaulted with their own taxpayer and ratepayer money (which

is subsidizing the building of these wind factories to the tune of 80% of the total costs), in the name of the failed ‘green’ energy boondoggle of wind is shameful, and simply un-American. It’s time to put a stop to this assault! Humbert has successfully Spotting Sampson Just Got Easier… Read on for Clues rescued 100 animals this year “Owl” • from page 1 clubs, Scouts, and other organizations and clubs. The program includes live animals and donations are accepted. Currently, Humbert has a redtailed hawk named Shae Lynn, who is about 4 years old, and a grey horned owl named Shadow, who is 8 years old, that are utilized in the presentations as they are unable to return to the wild “When you’re dealing with strictly donations from the public that’s tough,” said Jeff Perdziak, a volunteer of AWARE. “On top of him [Humbert] driving five to eight hours a day picking up these animals, taking care of them, and then going out on the weekends to raise money, that’s a tough routine. It’s not even a full time job, it’s a lifestyle he lives out here with the animals.” Perdziak, who is an artist, has been helping the group

Being any other animal, Humbert said he might have thought about holding onto to him until the winter is over, but it’s a snowy owl, which comes from the Tundra. “The faster I get him back to the wild, the better off he’s going to be,” he added. “It’s not uncommon to see snowy owls around this area. They are not endangered, but they are protected. They are a creature of habit just like anything else.” For playing apart in the snowy owl’s survival, Humbert received a certificate stating the owl was banded in Humbert’s and AWARE’s name. So, if at anytime the owl is caught or recorded an individual will know they helped save this owl’s life. “That’s why I do it,” said Humbert, referring to saving lives. “It gives you a really satisfying feeling. It’s amazing.” However, with rehabbing any creature there is always a chance it won’t survive and Humbert has experienced several losses. There have also been times where he had no option but to euthanize an animal. “I had a goose one time where the top of his head was actually skinned. A car hit him and the only thing you can do for something like that is put it out of its misery,” said Humbert. “He gets very sad when something dies or he has to euthanize,” added Bonnie, Humbert’s wife. This year alone Humbert had successfully rehabbed and released 100 animals back into the wild. He also rehabs deer, which currently he can only take on two to three deer at a time. In the future, he hopes he has the ability to take care of five to 10 deer, but in order to do so he needs to put up a 8-foot fence on his property and funds are needed. “Right now, I’m probably looking at about $3,000 to $4,000 worth of fencing,” said Humbert. “I wouldn’t have to worry about them escaping if I had the fence.” Monetary donations are always accepted and needed, plus items such as blankets, paper towels, old towels, sheets, and old cat food are always needed as well. The money is used for food, veterinary care, medications, medical equipment, etc. It costs a lot of money to take care of these animals and any help is appreciated by this organization. AWARE also does educational presentations for schools, seniors, churches,

by drawing the different creatures AWARE helps, such as Shadow. T-shirts and 8x10 prints can be purchased at the various events AWARE attends. Companies can also sponsor an animal and have their logo put on the back of the shirt. It is important to note that these types of animals are not pets. Humbert is equipped to take care of these animals and handle them, when needed. For more information on what you should do if you find an injured or distressed animal visit www.awarewildlife.com or call Humbert at 796-5771. For more information about AWARE or to make a donation visit www.awarewildlife. com. Donations can also be mailed to: AWARE, 5565 Mapleton Road, Lockport, NY 14094. Also keep up to date with AWARE by “liking” their Facebook page.

Off to a hot start-point Spartans off to first 4-0 start this decade By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER

It hasn’t been easy, but Starpoint is off to a 4-0 start for the first time in nearly 10 years. It has taken two overtime victories and all four have been by a margin of 10 points or less, but it appears that the Spartans are an early contender in the Erie County Interscholastic Conference. Having so many close games may concern some coaches and fans, but Starpoint skipper Ben Scaffidi is most happy that his team has been able to come away with victories in those tight contests. “We have been able to come out on top in those close ones,” said Scaffidi. “Somebody has to win the game and our first goal is to make sure that we are ready to play at the start of the game and contest everything to play as hard as we can for four quarters. In the last couple of minutes, you have to make enough plays to win the game, and we have been fortunate enough to do that with our four games this year. That’s been a good sign for us going forward.” One thing that will make any coach happy is balanced scoring, and Starpoint has gotten just that. The big three juniors of Brock Kroening, Christian Nodine and Ben Walters are all averaging over 14 points per game, while sophomore Adam Lasal is averaging eight a night.

when I get the ball, always go north and south, not east and west,” said Kroening. “Always go straight up. I just have to thank my teammates for good passes and I have to fight on the boards for a rebound or two.”

For the second straight season, the Barker girls basketball team is 4-1 at the holiday break. The Lady Raiders raced out to a 4-0 start before losing a nail-biter on the road to Akron on Dec. 19. Barker has offset some earlyseason struggles on offense with a tremendous defensive effort led by guards Melissa Grosshans and Caitlyn Mason that has held opponents to just 27 points per game. “Melissa Grosshans has played great for us,” said Barker head coach Jeff Costello. “She’s phenomenal defense, especially with Caitlyn. We look to put some double teams on people at times. As a whole we have played well defensively. We are not lighting it up on the scoreboard, but we can keep people in check and keep people contained.” That defense has certainly been suffocating so far this season, so much so that the Raiders were able to hold Tonawanda star Dahnea Harrison, who has averaged 15 points per game this season, to just nine points on Dec. 11.

Starpoint’s Brock Kroening, right, has been a difficult matchup for opponents so far this season. The junior has averaged 17.5 points per game in helping the Spartans to a 4-0 record. That ability to spread the ball around is something that will give opposing defenses fits, because it is hard to key on just one guy each night. “That’s good for our team,” said Scaffidi. “We know that we can move the basketball and runs some different things. At times we can go to guys that maybe have a bit of an advan-

tage during a specific game, and it also does not allow teams to focus on specific guys.” Kroening has been a difficult matchup for opponents so far because of his ability to play inside and on the perimeter. The junior big man is averaging 17.5 points per game and has already posted three double-doubles on the season.

In a game against Archbishop Walsh, he pulled down eight of his 14 boards on the offensive end, which resulted in easy put-backs. Meanwhile, in a win over West Seneca East, he knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to open overtime, proving his versatility. “My brother Matt, an assistant on the team, always told me

NCCC ladies take scorching Thunderwolves, 10-4, hope they’re fresh after recess start to winter break By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER

The 2013-14 season was a banner year for the Niagara County Community College women’s basketball program. In just his second year, head coach Nate Beutel led the Lady Thunderwolves to a school-record 25 wins and their first ever national ranking. Last year’s NJCAA Division II Region III Coach of the Year has already trumped that feat as not only is NCCC ranked again at 17th in the nation, but it is the highest ranking that the school has ever had. “This is our highest ranking ever,” said Beutel. “In terms of the ranking, that’s something that we are very proud of. It’s a great thing to be able to tell recruits and to just show the progress that our program has made in the short time that we’ve been here.” For the second straight season, the Lady Thunderwolves are unbeaten after the first semester. It may only be Christmas, but the Niagara County Community College Thunderwolves are at the midway point of their season. After two big wins in the NCCC Thunderwolves Classic on Dec. 19-20 to end the first semester, Bill Beilein’s club finds itself 10-4 heading into the New Year. Not only do the victories over Planet Athlete Academy and College of Southern Maryland send the Thunderwolves into the holiday break on a high note, but they end a skid in which they lost COURTESY OF NCCC ATHLETICS four out of six games after starting the year 5-0. the Thunderwolves Classic at this particular time in order to give the team an extra week to play together. Beilein knows that the break is coming at just the right time. “The reason we scheduled this holiday tournament was to keep them here for an extra six days,” said Beilein. “Some of the guys are a little bit homesick but we got those reps in so I think we will be much fresher when they return.”

Jordan Green has averaged 14.5 points per game.

While NCCC is getting scoring from the usual suspects in Eli Jones (19 points per game), Sheldon Zablotny-Crosby (18.5 points per game) and Jordan Green (14.5 points per game), it is also getting strong play out of its bench. The Thunderwolves are averaging over 28 of their 89 total points per game off of the bench. “Our bench play has really stepped up,” said Beilein. “We have had a bunch of injuries but those guys have really brought a lot of energy and scored the majority of our points.” That bench play will be much needed when the season resumes because the New Year also marks the beginning of conference play. Last season, the Thunderwolves went 13-1 before the holiday recess, but conference play caught up with them, as they went just 9-6 in the second half of the schedule. As such, playing better against familiar foes will be a point of emphasis.

Feeney focused on widening skill set, winning at states By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER

Not everyone gets a second chance to achieve a dream or a goal. Kirk Feeney is a two-time Section VI Class AA champion at 138 and 145 pounds. He also won the Section VI State Qualifier meet last season and placed second in 2013. Despite his success at the Section VI meets, the Lockport senior grappler has failed to place in the state tournament in both appearances. And that has him working as hard as

ever to make the best of his last opportunity. “I have to improve on the things that stopped me from being better,” said Feeney. “I have to show up on the big stage at states. I wasn’t ready at states, I made a lot of mistakes, I have to refine things and get better. I have to get better on my feet. I’m pretty good on the mat.” Feeney is off to a 14-1 start in his final scholastic season, with the only loss coming to state finalist Andrew Shomers of Lewiston-Porter. He has wrestled two particular weight classes his last two seasons, but this year, Feeney has wrestled at anywhere from 152 to 170 pounds. It’s something that he is comfortable doing. “I feel like I have embraced it,” said Feeney. “I got bigger as well. When you are around

for a while, you get to learn the sport and stuff like that doesn’t matter as much. It’s more about your technique and what you bring to the mat.” Feeney’s loss to Shomers hasn’t phased him for a second. He believes that the loss came at just the right time in the season. An early-season defeat keeps him focused because Feeney knows that he won’t be able to walk through the season just to get to sectionals and beyond. “It was a perfect match for this time in the season,” said Feeney. “Matches like that are perfect. For the most part I wrestled well, but he was able to capitalize when I was relaxing. He was able to do what I wasn’t that night and I’m looking forward to seeing him again later in the season.” The bump up in weight class

and the drive to reach states isn’t the only new aspect of his game this season as Feeney has taken on a leadership role with the Lions. A junior captain a season ago, Feeney didn’t have to be too vocal. He let his wrestling speak for itself. But now he is looked at as more of a vocal leader, he is excelling at that just as much as he is on the mat. “Kirk has done great,” said Lockport head coach Joe Scapelliti. “He’s a fantastic leader in the room. He works hard in everything that we do and he does all of the little things well. That’s what makes all the difference in the world. His whole approach to things. “He is very good with his weight, he leads by example, and that’s what we need at this point in time. We need leadership at

this time and I’m confident that he’s the guy that can provide it for us.” One of the downfalls of being successful for such a long period of time is that everyone knows who you are and they study every move. Feeney has become a marked man in the Niagara Frontier League and in Section VI, so he has been working hard to broaden his skill set and refine his techniques. “Kirk is really good on top,” said Scapelliti. “He relies on his legs, which are very good, but we want to have a little more on top. That’s one of the areas we are working, is to diversify ourselves on top, and he has done a really good job of that in practice. “Muscle memory is tough sometimes and he has put a

good emphasis on trying not to do that so we get better in other areas too. Everybody knows him now and knows what he does, so we have to get a little bit more diverse on top.” Even though Feeney has racked up win after win and numerous individual and team championships, he knows that there is still room for improvement on the mat. He knows that to continue to pile up wins, he has to listen to his coaches, broaden his game and keep opponents guessing. “I like to put my legs in and power half, but people are learning that’s all I do,” said Feeney. “They are game planning against that, so to beat the better kids like Shomers, I need to change it up so that’s not what they are expecting. I have gotten too comfortable just doing that.”

Walters’ shooting Facing adversity an emphasis in practice ability has been key “NCCC” from page 6

“Hoops” from page 6

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Ben Walters (42) has been hot from beyond the arc for the Spartans early this season. Walters has been sizzling from behind the arc to start the season, averaging 14.5 points per game so far. His role as a shooter is extremely important to this team. His ability to stroke it from the outside forces the defense out to open things up for Kroening inside and on drives for Nodine (13.3 points per game). Walters attributes the early success to the fact that most of the roster from last year was comprised of juniors and sophomores. As such, the experience has helped the Spartans improve this season. “We are able to come out knowing what to do,” Walters said. For the remainder of the

season, patience will be key, both in playing out the rest of the season and in offensive sets. Scaffidi would like to see his team exhibit more patience on the offensive end to get easier and higher quality looks at the basket. “We are talking about patience on offense and taking care of the basketball to make sure we get a quality shot all of the time,” said Scaffidi. “We have some pretty talented guys that can make plays, but sometimes we try to make those things happen too fast, so we talk about having a lot more patience on offense.” Starpoint will close out the calendar year with a home game against rival Lockport

One of the purposes of the trip is to help teach the Thunderwolves to play well when faced with adversity, which was something that they struggled with down the stretch last season. When the girls return from their trip to Florida, they will have played 13 of their first 15 games in opposing venues, which Beutel hopes will help them as conference play opens. “I think we need to be able to handle adversity a little bit better,” said Beutel. “Last year if I think back we were 25-5 and almost all of those losses were on the road. That’s usually when you encounter adversity — when you are on the road, away from the comforts of home. I hope we are better prepared for road

tests in the second semester this time around.” One of the most pleasant things that Beutel has seen is that his team is sharing the ball very well thus far. The Lady Thunderwolves average over 21 assists per game, which is third in the nation. The key cog in that machine has been point guard Jesse DeWaters, who has averaged 7.2 assists per game, while turning it over just twice per contest. “Jesse DeWaters is the catalyst of that,” Beutel said. “She has a three-to-one assist-toturnover ratio. She’s top five in the country in assists and she is the leader of the pack in terms of sharing the ball. “I just think we do a really nice job of making the extra pass when the time is right, not settling for a decent shot

but instead making that next pass to get a great shot and just unselfish play. That has been a huge key for us.” On the other end of the spectrum, Beutel would like NCCC to improve on the boards this season and with its depth. Of its 79 points per game, NCCC is getting just 22 of those from its reserves and that’s something that it would like to change as conference play begins. “I’m pretty confident in what our starters are going to bring,” Beutel said. “I want to have that same confidence in our bench players.” A major surprise has been the play of Tanisha Moyer, who has stepped into the starting lineup due to an ACL injury to her roommate Albanellys Perez.

Moyer was one of the hardest workers in the offseason and it has been on full display as she leads the Lady Thunderwolves in scoring (16.4 points per game) and rebounding (eight per game) after averaging 3.5 points and four boards last year. “Tanisha has really stepped up to the plate and taken on that role in the post that we need her to,” said Beutel. “She’s just realized that this is her time to step up and it has been a long time coming. This is a kid that missed her entire senior season of high school with an injury and it really took all of last year to get back to where she wanted to be and this summer she took her work ethic to another level.” NCCC will play Eastern Florida State on Dec. 30 and Daytona State on Jan 2.

Conference play will be tough test “T-Wolves” from page 6 Local rivals Erie Community College, Genesee Community College, Jamestown Community College and Monroe Community College all boast talented and deep rosters, so it will be key for the Thunderwolves to remain fresh. “Once you get to confer-

ence play, it’s going to be rough,” said Beilein. “Six out of seven of us are strong. Those games come quick. You have to be in shape. January and February fly by because you are overloaded with games. “ Another point of emphasis will be ball movement and playing better in half-

court sets in the second half of the season. While NCCC is averaging nearly 90 points per game, it is also averaging nearly 20 turnovers per game, which is six more than its opponents. It also ranks 119 out of 126 teams in the country in turnovers per game. “We have to execute bet-

ter,” said Beilein. “We need to hold screens longer and make better cuts. We are hanging on to the ball too long. It’s sticking too much and it’s causing too many turnovers.” Niagara County Community College hosts Lakeland Community College of Ohio on Jan. 6 at 7:30 p.m.

Starpoint Grosshans, Mason, Flegal lead defensive effort to host 12th Wall of Fame Night “Barker” from page 6

Starpoint High School will host its 12th annual Sports Wall of Fame night on Friday, Jan. 30, and will induct two former student-athletes and a former coach. The ceremony will take place at approximately 6:15 p.m. between the boys JV and varsity basketball games against Sweet Home. The following individuals will be inducted: John Hey (1966), David Parry (1995), and coach Barbara Kreuzer. A reception for inductees and their guests will be held in the high school cafeteria prior to the event.

The trio of Grosshans, Mason and Kelsi Flegal has been particularly bothersome for opponents with all three players’ stellar on-ball defensive pressure. “With Caitlyn, Kelsi and Melissa it has been the pressure that they put on the ball,” said Costello. “They are able to put double teams on people from time-to-time. Maicie [Baker] and Morgan [Brown] have been able to get position so we are not giving up a ton of rebounds. We have been fortunate that we haven’t played some really big teams so we still haven’t seen that type of matchup.” JEFFREY T. BARNES It is likely that Barker can maintain its defensive domiRebecca Stoloski and the Barker basketball team nance throughout the season, but the key to becoming a have played a stingy brand of defense this year. threat in the Niagara-Orleans League hierarchy will be improving on the offensive end. low point coming in the loss from last season, is averaging The Lady Raiders have aver- to Akron in which they scored just eight points per night and aged just 34 points per game just 25 points. she believes that if the team through five games, with the Mason, the leading scorer can get the offense revved up,

it can be a tough team to beat in league play. “Our defense this year is a huge part of our game,” said Mason. “That’s really what’s been able to keep us in games, our offense not so much but that’s what we are working on. If we can keep our defense the way it is and start to hit some shots and knock down some free throws, then we can really contend this year.” One surprise this season has been the play of senior forward Morgan Brown, who has bumped her scoring average up from 2.7 to 7.4 points per game this season. Brown and Maicie Baker’s play inside will be incredibly instrumental for Barker based on the fact that the team does not have an overly tall squad and on most nights it will not have a height advantage. “Morgan has a good understanding of what’s going on out there,” said Costello. “We give her a little rest here and

there so she can be more productive in those short spurts that she’s out on the court. She is working on her post moves. Maicie Baker is another one with decent moves. Both of them just need to finish. If we can get that production down in the post area, it will take a little pressure off of the guards because if the post isn’t scoring, they can just collapse or extend out on our guards.” After the Dec. 19 game at Akron, the Lady Raiders will not play again until Jan. 6, so it will give them time to get over the loss and to refine various aspects of the game. Costello intends to continue to expand the offensive and defensive playbook during that time, but they will also work on developing skills such as ball handling for guards and post moves and boxing out for the post players. Barker will host Medina on Jan. 6 for its first home league game of the season.

FROM the SIDELINES

Bills players help kids Play 60, playoff chances squandered By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR

Buffalo Bills wide receiver Chris Hogan participates in Play 60 and Fitness for Kids Challenge events all season long, but still, the athletic instincts and abilities of some of the participating kids manage to surprise him every time. “There are always a couple of kids out here that will actually really juke you out,” Hogan said with a laugh. Even so, athletic ability notwithstanding, Hogan thinks it’s just good to see kids being active. Hogan, alongside his Buffalo teammates and representatives from the Independent Health Foundation and the American Heart Association, hosted 300 elementary school students from participating schools throughout Western New York to celebrate the completion of the Play 60 Challenge on Dec. 16 inside the AdPro Field House at One Bills Drive. The Play 60 Challenge is a key initiative of the Buf-

falo Bills and the NFL that encourages America’s youth to be physically active for at least 60 minutes every day. The Challenge was offered to local students in partnership with the Independent Health Foundation’s Fitness for Kids Challenge in a joint effort to increase students’ physical activity and encourage good nutrition. Hogan and his fellow Bills spoke with children about the significance of physical activity and healthy eating and supervised footballoriented physical fitness stations. Hogan, of course, was holding a blocking pad. And while some of the kids managed to juke the second-year Bill out, he was encouraged by the turnout and enjoyed being there. “I love doing these Play 60 events,” he said. “We do them all year and I look forward to coming out here and running around with the kids. It’s a good time and they get a kick out of it. It’s a lot of fun seeing how much fun they have with just a couple of Bills players out here.”

PHOTO COURTESY OF THE BUFFALO BILLS

Bills kicker Dan Carpenter watches as a young participant sends a ball toward mini uprights that were set up at the Bills Play 60 event Dec. 16. Matching the excitement of participating children can be a tall order, the 26-yearold said, but after a few minutes, he was having just as much as fun as they were. “Five minutes into it I find myself running around more than the kids are and sweating,” Hogan said. “I love these events.” He’s not the only one.

Bills center and captain Eric Wood, a sixth-year veteran, supervised a blowup slide with quarterback Jeff Tuel. “The whole Play 60 program is great,” Wood said. “Childhood obesity is growing in this country and anything we can do to help that and get the kids out having fun is a great deal. And it seems like the kids

are having a blast.” ••• A few days after the Bills hosted area elementary students, the Oakland Raiders hosted the Bills. But the Raiders weren’t in it for fun and games. The Raiders spoiled Buffalo’s bid for one of the AFC’s wildcard spots by defeating the Bills, 26-24, in

what was a must-win game for Doug Marrone’s squad. The loss came one week after Buffalo upset Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers behind a stalwart defensive effort. The Bills clinched their 15th straight season without a playoff berth with the loss. ••• What could have been a rivalry showdown between a postseason-hungry Buffalo team and a New England unit that dominates the Bills perennially, has turned into a game with little significance behind it. The Bills will head to Foxboro later this week to take on the Patriots at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 28 at Gillete Stadium. The game will be broadcast on CBS. The Patriots (12-3), who beat the Jets 17-16 on Sunday, have already locked up a first-round bye but could be playing for home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Bills (8-7), meanwhile, will aim to finish a season over .500 for the first time since 2004. New England defeated Buffalo in Week 6, 37-22.

Hamburg natives help D’Youville hoops to hot start By Marquel Slaughter SPORTS REPORTER

Regardless of her participation in leagues with the locally-popular Little Cagers basketball league as a tween to playing three years of varsity ball under Kelly Owens, Alexis Smith never truly thought about taking her skills to the next level and hooping in college. It was not until her senior year at Hamburg High School when D’Youville began recruiting her. With her intentions of studying in the medical field, it was the perfect college for Smith academically. Now in her junior season playing basketball at DYC, Smith has teamed up alongside fellow Hamburg native in Nichols grad Morgan McDermott to help coach Dan Glover and the Lady Spartans to a 7-2 record, which is on pace to become the most successful season since 2007-08. “Just looking back on last year you can see that we’re

pretty much a completely different team,” said McDermott, a sophomore who is aiding DYC to its best season since it went 22-6 and advanced to the Division III tournament in 2007-08. “We’re so much better this year. This year I think our team chemistry is something that adds into us winning games. I think it’s a key component.” McDermott attended St. Peter and Paul before enrolling to Nichols for high school. She became the only freshman to make the varsity cut as a ninth grader and was a four-year player when she left in 2013. Smith graduated from Hamburg in 2012 with intentions of playing for the coach who recruited her. When coach stepped down late that August early in the semester, Glover came to a roster of six girls and put together a squad full of other athletes to field a team. After some time and recruiting his own freshmen classes, Glover has D’Youville off to its best start in years, a major improvement from 11 wins by the end of last year and seven

the season before. “Experience,” said Glover, who is a 2006 Lake Shore graduate. “With the last couple of years bringing in recruiting classes, I think a lot of people getting playing time when they were young has given them experience now. They’ve been through tough situations and now they’re prepared for it.” “Coming in, I didn’t really know what to expect, and with the coaching change there was a new outlook,” said Smith. One of those hoopers that found their opportunity to take advantage of the time given to her early in her college career was Smith. Not only was her 34 points a record-high for a freshman, she topped that with 37 that same year, which still stands as the single game record for points scored within the program. She was honored as a secondteam all-conference player and received Newcomer of the Year. “We knew she was going to be something special,” said Glover. “She was a kid who

had raw talent.” McDermott‘s addition was an essential one to DYC’s growth as a program and in order to change the culture around, she became a part of Glover’s first recruiting class. The Nichols alumna was scouted for her hard work, high basketball IQ and shooting ability to help out the remaining returners. “They had the tools to be successful. They just needed someone to help them get to that point,” said Glover. Once a go-to player on the offensive side of the ball, Smith has found herself in a much different role lately than she was her first season. “Obviously with her third year her role changed a little bit, but in the three years she has also matured as a player and can accept that change of role,” said Glover. “But she’s that type of player who can change the game for us and she has. “I’m looking forward to seeing what she has in store for us the rest of her junior year and senior year.”

Medaille may be the rival college right down the street but D’Youville is too busy making history against the top teams in the league. La Roche has always given trouble to DYC and the rest of the city but it was this fall where DYC’s 11-point loss was the closest margin of victory against the conference powerhouse. The Spartans found themselves down 25 at halftime before battling back and getting within eight. “That right there showed me we played to our potential in the second half,” Glover said. “The first half we just have to get over the feeling of ‘oh ,this is La Roche…’ But we took a step in the right direction in the end of it. We never gave up. We played hard the entire time. I’m happy for that aspect.” There are plenty of basketball players from the Western New York area that are making their waves at DYC. Awilda Murphy is a freshman from Sacred Heart that Glover called “a program changer.” Bridget Andrews (Sacred Heart) is in her senior

year and is approaching 1,000 points. Senior Jillian Piniewski (West Seneca West) transferred to DYC after spending two years hooping at Brockport. Kayla Brown (Cardinal O’Hara) is also a transfer, spending her freshman year at Daemen before finding a home with the Spartans. Sophomore Alyssa Donnelly (Nichols) is used to stretch the floor, junior Sarah Marino (Holy Angels) has a lethal jumper and is usually the one to get the bench going and Danette Laguerre (Hutch Tech) is a solid backup point guard that has been getting over some injuries. With the help of out-oftown talent such as Jean-Ann Korona, Ali Cochrane, Amanda Marcely, Mary Roberts, Casey Bartels and Hannah Simone, each of the Western New Yorkers have key roles for DYC. “We’re ready to make a splash this season and make history,” said Glover. ”That’s what we came to do.”

Canisius College basketball off to surprising start By Mike Haim

SPORTS COLUMNIST

It wasn’t exactly a shock when the Canisius Golden Griffins men’s basketball squad was ranked near the bottom of their conference’s pre-season poll. After all, the prevailing thought was that the Griffs would have a tough time overcoming the loss of Billy Baron, the all-conference guard who led the team to back-to-back 20-win seasons. While there wasn’t exactly a stench emanating from the corner of Main and Delevan, the whiff of “rebuilding” was definitely in

the air. And so the Griffs’ predicted 10th place standing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference coaches’ poll seemed appropriate. But here we are in Christmas week, and the Golden Griffins, almost in defiance of that coaches’ poll, have cobbled together a nice little start and are enter the holiday break with a 6-4 record. The Griffs will enter the Koessler Center for their Dec. 30 contest against UMKC looking for their fifth win in six games. Canisius will then follow with a pair of conference games – on Jan. 2 against Monmouth and Jan. 4 against Manhattan – which should prove whether the

Griffs are for real. For a team reasonably expected to struggle to reach 10 wins this season, the strong start is shocking to almost everyone except for the Griffs themselves. After this past Sunday’s convincing 67-48 win over Holy Cross, Canisius coach Jim Baron described how his team has proven the naysayers wrong. “This team is special.” Baron said. “These guys have some ability right now, with attacking and pressure and getting the ball inside and getting to the free throw line. I’m looking forward to the second part of the season, and taking one more step.” There are still areas of concern. The Golden Griffins

beat Stony Brook in overtime on Dec. 18 despite shooting an anemic 32% from the field (the Seawolves, however, were worse, shooting at a 28% clip). Even when beating Holy Cross by a 19-point margin – their largest of the season – they committed a season-high 19 turnovers. Sunday marked only the second game in which Canisius outscored its opponent in the paint; the other came in a win against Niagara, the only MAAC school predicted to finish worse than the Griffs. In fact, most of Canisius’ wins seem to be cobbled together with good effort and a little bit of luck as opposed to dominant play. Forward Josiah Heath, the

only senior in the starting lineup and a player who has never missed a game in four years, averages just over 20 minutes a game and gets just under seven points and a hair over five rebounds per contest. Sophomore guard Zach Lewis is the workhorse of the roster, averaging over 31 minutes a game and leading the team in scoring, though he’s still the only player to average more than 10 points per game. The Griffs get solid efforts nightly from sophomore forward Phil Valenti (9.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game) and junior Jamal Reynolds (7.9 points and 7.2 boards per game). But as any coach will tell you, wins are wins. They

aren’t graded by style or any metric other than the final score. And the results so far have to make Baron and his charges feel optimistic about their progress. “We have to use our defense to create offense,” Baron assessed. “I’ve told our kids that this is one of the best defensive teams I’ve had in a long time.” As the calendar turns to 2015 and Canisius gets into the teeth of its conference schedule, it’ll be interesting to see if the Griffs can maintain their momentum and prove the MAAC coaches wrong. www.twitter.com/mikehaim
