Sometimes, it’s truly amazing just how much a personal touch can mean. The Seniors Offering Service group at the Cheektowaga Senior Center will be making fleece blankets to send to the Ronald McDonald House. The blankets are distributed among their patients and last time the group dropped off some blankets, they got to see just how much they meant. “The staff at the house gave us a tour, and when one little girl saw the pile
of blankets, she saw one with butterflies on it. She went wild,” said Kerry Switalski, director at the Senior Center. “She was so excited that she was going to get to pick her own, and that’s the one she picked. It made our members feel extra good about the work they put into making them all, because they saw who was benefiting from their good works.” Blanket-making session will be taking place from 12:45 to 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 13 and Monday, Feb. 23 at the center. Volunteers are asked to bring their own scissors. They’re also looking
for help from other members of the community. To make a blanket, it requires 2.5 yards of a color fleece and 2.5 yards of a matching print fleece. Prints should be suitable for the kids, boys and girls, that will ultimately be picking one of the blankets out for their very own. That excitement of getting to pick out something of your very own, something that someone took the time to make by hand just for someone like you, that’s the spirit that the

New Non-Surgical Protocol For Neuropathy What is Neuropathy? Neuropathy is a collection of disorders that occurs when nerves of the peripheral nervous system are damaged. The condition is generally referred to as peripheral neuropathy. In the United States, over 20 million people suffer from peripheral neuropathy. Neuropathy can be brought on by a number of different causes including diabetes, back problems, and certain drugs. Damaged nerves send incorrect signals to the brain causing scattered messages resulting in numbness, burning, tingling, and sharp pain sensations that are usually felt in the feet, legs, hands or arms. Symptoms associated with the motor portion of the nerve may also include muscle weakness, cramping and spasms as well as a lack of coordination and poor balance.
Traditional Treatments: Over the years, neuropathy treatments in general have had poor results at best. Many medications are used that have significant side effects and poor outcomes. Only recently have we had a promising breakthrough to help reduce the symptoms of neuropathy with lasting results.
Are you Experiencing Pins & Needles? Numbness and Tingling? Pain or Burning in your Feet or Hands? New Non-Surgical Protocol for Neuropathy: A new development in Class IV laser technology called Deep Tissue Laser Therapy has been shown to improve the function of the blood vessels that feed the nerves by sending radiant infrared energy deep into the walls of the blood vessels and tissues that surround the injured nerves. This improves the elasticity and function of the blood vessels. As the blood vessels become healthier, the nerves begin to thrive. Additionally, Electroanalgesic Treatment is used to reduce the ability of the affected nerves to transmit pain signals and promote healing by means of the depolarization effects on the nerve cells. This computer-assisted treatment offers exemplary patient success in the treatment of PAIN, without piercing the skin. Moreover, therapies including Whole Body Vibration and Hydromassage are designed to improve circulation, strength and balance.
If you would like to learn more about these drug-free and pain-free technologies for neuropathy and other nerve or pain conditions call (716) 213-6824. The Mentholatum Company, which operates its North American headquarters on Sterling Drive off Milestrip Road, is today one of the top manufacturers of skin care products in the world. The company, along with its parent company, Japan-based Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., also manufacture Oxy acne medication, WellPatch, Natural Ice lip balm and Hada Labo Tokyo skin care products, among others. There is a fair chance that you might have spread Mentholatum vaporizing rub over your chest, to fend off a bad cough. Maybe you or a female companion recently purchased a Softlips cube for extra lip protection during the dry cold weather. Perhaps you swear by Rohto eye-drops for red and irritated eyes. But did you know that the company responsible for these and many other household-name skin care products is based right here in Orchard Park?

that while the company has a strong presence in national retailers and consumers’ minds, they are still dwarfed by some of their competitors, particularly Proctor & Gamble Co., which manufactures the other iconic vapor rub, Vick’s. “Mentholatum competes with giants. It’s like David and Goliath, said Legros, adding that Mentholatum also competes against the Fortune 500 corporation Johnson & Johnson. However, the company has staked out a position in both the American and international markets through what Legros calls unique, top-quality skin care products. He says the company is in a strong position for growth; their goal is to double their revenue in the next five years. With this goal in mind, Mentholatum launched two new, innovative products in the last year. The first, the Softlips Cube, promises effective, soothing lip care, and comes in a sleek, trendy design, aimed particularly for the female market. The other is a Nighttime variant of its original vapor rub, with “naturally soothing lavender to provide gentler cough relief.

Legros pointed out that Mentholatum does much of its sampling locally, and donates to a number of local charities, including the Roycroft Campus Corporation, the Buffalo Zoo, the Food Bank of WNY and the Conners Children Center. The company also employs close to 200 residents, and they expect to create more jobs as they grow. Legros says they appreciate the local support, and very much like their home in the Buffalo region. “Buffalonians are very loyal to products that are made locally, and tend to make an effort to support local products,” Legros said. “As much as we support our local charities, we appreciate the support of Buffalonians.”

The company continued to expand its product line throughout the Aughts, and are now anticipating sales of $500 million in 2015. Mentholatum moved to its current location at 707 Sterling Drive in 1997. There they manufacture and package a number of their popular products. The location also serves as their North American headquarters. And yet, despite manufacturing so many leading and trusted skin care products, Legros still feels as though Mentholatum’s presence goes unknown by most Buffalonians. “Some people know about Mentholatum, but our presence and the knowledge of our presence has been a little bit subdued,” Legros said.

In 1975, Rohto Pharmaceutical Company became Mentholatum’s licensee, and in ’88, Rohto purchased Mentholatum. Legros says the two companies “realized (they) had synergies.” Throughout the ’90s, Rohto and Mentholatum began to market a number of innovative new skin care products and opened new factories in the U.K., Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and elsewhere.

“We generally pride ourselves in the passion and the quality of our people to help us develop, produce and market all out of here in Orchard Park,” Legros said. “You talk about Buffalo (as} an AllAmerica City; I like to think that Mentholatum is one of these All-American brands. The Mentholatum Company was founded in 1889 by Albert Alexander Hyde, an early purveyor of the medicinal and topical benefits of menthol. Developing the vapor rub recipe which the company still uses today, he founded a partnership called The Yucca Company in Wichita, Kan. By 1906, the company changed its name to The Mentholatum Company, following the success of the original Mentholatum Ointment, and had opened an office in Buffalo. Several years later, in 1919, the company opened a factory on Niagara Street in Buffalo. The company found early success by marketing heavily in East Asia; they

Fans don’t let fans drive drunk, so game plan for a ‘Super Sunday’ The Super Bowl is America’s most watched national sporting event, and on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 1, there will be lots of game day socializing that may include drinking. That’s why The Resource Training Center of Amherst, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and local law enforcement officials are urging football fans to choose sides now: drinking OR driving. If you plan on drinking on Super Bowl Sunday, these organizations encourage you to designate a sober driver to get you home
safely! “Fans don’t let fans drive drunk,” said Monica Farrar, director of The Resource Training Center. “Before choosing to drink, choose a sober designated driver. Avoid the unsportsmanlike conduct of driving drunk by handing off your keys so that you, your passengers and everyone on our roads can safely arrive home.” According to data from NHTSA, in 2012 there were 10,322 people killed in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes in the United States. A driver is considered alcohol-im-
paired with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher, the legal limit in all states. This Feb. 1, don’t become a tragic Super Bowl stat. Are You Drinking? If so, don’t drive. Follow these tips to have fun, stay alive, and avoid getting pulled over or crashing your vehicle on game day. • Before Super Bowl Sunday, make a game plan that includes a sober driver – someone who is not drinking at all. • Leave your keys at home. • Consider taking a taxi
to your destination so you won’t even have the option later to drive impaired. • Avoid drinking too much alcohol too fast. Eat plenty of food, take breaks and alternate with non-alcoholic drinks. • If you don’t have a designated driver, ask a sober friend for a ride home; call a cab, friend, or family member to come get you; or if possible stay where you are for the night and don’t drive until you are sober. • Walking impaired can be just as dangerous as drunk driving. Designate a sober
friend to walk you home. Are You Driving? If so, don’t drink. Your responsible choices can save lives. • Take your role seriously as the designated sober driver — don’t drink and drive. • Enjoy the party with food and non-alcoholic drinks. • Wear your seat belt and require your passengers to do the same. • If someone you know has been drinking and tries to drive, take their keys and help them get home safely. They’ll thank you later. “Drunk driving is a seri-
ous problem with serious consequences,” added Farrar. “Drunk drivers face jail time, the loss of their license, higher insurance rates, and dozens of other unanticipated expenses ranging from attorney fees, court costs, car towing and repairs, and lost wages due to time off from work.” Located in the Harlem Road Community Center at 4255 Harlem Rd., Amherst, For more information, please call 983-2258, email info@wnyresourcetraining. org or visit www.wnyresourcetraining.org.

This will be the 29th year that Hospice Buffalo will be selling their beautiful spring bouquets. With all proceeds from the sale of the flowers staying right here in Erie County and supporting the care of patients right here, it’s a purchase that means you’re doing a whole host of good things. “It’s become something of an annual rite,” said Rosemary Collins, Director of Public Relations & Community Market at The Center for Hospice & Palliative Care. “Winter is finally on its way out, and the spring bouquets from Hospice are here.” The flowers, wrapped into bouquets and delivered while they’re still incredibly fresh, are notorious for being of the best quality and able to be preserved for weeks, as long as instructions are followed, water is changed
and food is added. That means weeks of making someone smile every time they look at the bouquet and, this year, those that participate in Hospice’s pre-sale will be responsible for a little something extra. Early birds are able to order a special Tribute Bouquet for $30. The over-sized bouquet, containing 30 stems, means more than just getting an extra beautiful bouquet to welcome in the spring. For each Tribute Bouquet ordered, a standard bouquet will be sent to one of Hospice’s current patients. The bouquet sale is the largest fundraiser done by the Hospice Foundation, and over its 29 years, it has succeeded in raising $4.7 million, all funds that go toward the care of patients. Companies and schools are invited to take part in the pre-sale event; Hospice pre-sale will be delivered The deadline to submit asks that each organization nator who will take control on Monday, March 2 and pre-sale orders is Wedneswho wants to participate of ordering the bouquets. A ranking of top fairs and exhibitions has named the Erie County Fair the 10th largest fair in North America in 2014. The ranking of fairs, based on attendance, is published annually by CarnivalWarehouse.com. The list includes all county and state fairs, exhibitions, livestock and rodeo shows in the United States and Canada. In August 2014, the Erie County Fair celebrated its 175th fair and experienced a recordsetting number of visitors. Attendance of 1,220,101 broke the previous record set in 2013 by 5 percent. Tenth place is the best North American ranking received by the Erie County Fair in the modern era of fair tabulations. The 2014 Erie County Fair was highlighted by the opening of the Agriculture Discovery Center, a 1400 ft skywalk by Nik Wallenda, an opening day performance by the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the celebration of a 90 year partnership with the James E. Last February, Family Promise of Western New York moved into a new location in Cheektowaga. Their resource center, located at 149 French Rd., is the old HSBC Bank branch, creatively repurposed into the headquarters of the grass roots organization dedicated to providing families everything they need to get back on their feet after being homeless. The set-up of the organization is a unique one. Family Promise partners with faith-based congrega-
tions throughout the area; these churches and synagogues provide a place for each family to stay for one week at a time, while they take advantage of the many resources offered at the center’s headquarters, all designed with the goal of getting families back on track. Currently, Family Promise has 11 congregations that they partner with on a regular basis and, so far, those congregations have provided life-changing services to 81 families since 2010. But, they have no partner congregations in Cheektowaga. Ideally, 13 partners
would allow them to provide full coverage on a rotating basis for all the families that they serve. They’re hoping that a few faith-based groups in Cheektowaga – their own neighborhood – will come forward and lend their support. “One of our biggest priorities right now is getting our 13 congregations,” said Charles LeFevre, Executive Director of Family Promise. “We’re very actively looking for congregations who are willing to partner with us as a ministry or outreach program.” Families who enter into the Family Promise program stay at congregation
centers on a rotating basis, three or four times a year. While they’re there, members of the congregation and volunteers provide warm meals, a comfortable place to stay, and a caring, loving environment. Family Promise is also unique in that one of its core values is allowing families to stay together during their time of need. This means relying on the support of the community to provide anything from a hot meal to a friendly shoulder, and it’s an amazingly rewarding experience. “It’s extremely fulfilling to know that you’re making a difference in the lives of people in your own community,” said LeFevre. “You’re making a significant difference in the lives of people who are in their darkest hour.” Because Family Promise is a relatively small, grass-roots organization, that allows them to direct donations right where they’re the most needed,

and where they can do the most good for their recipient families. A donation might go toward a deposit on an apartment for a family, or toward other muchneeded necessities. The organization also provides transportation to and from job interviews, to and from congregations to their resource center, and when moving in between hosting locations. Their resource center provides everything from a place to do laundry to professional help building resumes, applying for jobs, and looking for housing. And because the entire family is provided for, that means they also have volunteers that are helping kids with their homework, playing games, and making sure that they’re still smiling through the rough patches of life. It’s also of note that volunteers aren’t required to be of any particular religious belief or be a part of the congregation; Family Promise welcomes all
volunteers, knowing that there’s people of all kinds who are there to help. Homelessness in Western New York is a massive problem. In 2013, an estimated 2,084 people in families with children stayed in emergency shelters or transitional housing, while another 3,190 adults relied on the same services. That’s a five percent increase over the previous year. LeFevre says that they see all types come to their doors, and they’re grateful to be able to provide help to everyone from single parents to veterans and their families. In addition to finding several more host congregations, they’re also hoping to find a few corporate sponsors to partner with. Donations are also much needed, and will be going directly to help those that need them most. For more information on how to help, call the center at 771-3007 or email clefevre@fpwny.org.

(NAPSI)—As many parents know, kids can be picky eaters. And according to a recent study, moms are concerned that their kids aren’t eating enough fruits and vegetables. “We found that moms understand the health benefits of fruits and vegetables but struggle to get their family to eat them,” said Elizabeth Pivonka, Ph.D., RD, president and CEO, Produce for Better Health Foundation. “Today, Americans are currently eating less than half of the recommended cups of fruits and vegetables each day.” To better understand the situation, the Produce for Better Health Foundation conducted its annual research on “Moms’ Attitudes and Beliefs Related to Fruit & Vegetable Consumption.”
The study found: • Ninety percent agree that a diet that includes fruits and vegetables may help their child avoid obesity. • Ninety percent agree that a diet with more fruits and vegetables promotes their family’s overall health and may prevent disease, now and in the future. • Ninety percent agree that a diet that includes fruits and vegetables may help promote well-being of mind and body. • Eighty-nine percent agree that more fruits and vegetables plus more physical activity means the family can be at its best. There’s been a steady improvement over time in the level of ease moms reported regarding their ability to access fruits and vegetables for their families at restaurants
and quick-service restaurants. Setting out a fruit bowl, having vegetables cut up and ready to eat in the refrigerator, and finding ways to hide produce in other foods are some of the ways to get more fruits and vegetables into a family’s diet. The research also found that kids tend to eat more produce when they are involved in the growing, selecting and preparing of food. To get kids more involved, Pivonka provided these tips: 1. Let kids get involved in planning meals for the week and challenge them to find ways to make sure a fruit and vegetable are included in each meal. Remember, canned, frozen and dried fruits or vegetables, in addition to fresh, are all great options!
2. Get kids involved in using produce to make juices or smoothies. It can be a fun activity for kids to use a blender or juicer to show them there are other ways to eat your fruits and vegetables. 3. Teach kids about produce that’s in season and how to select the best produce. Take them to a farmer’s market to talk with growers. This also provides a great opportunity to try new produce they didn’t know they enjoyed. 4. Starting a backyard garden can be a great way to get kids interested and involved. Monsanto, through its Seminis Home Garden division, is working to make growing backyard produce more accessible for busy families by creating seed varieties that are easy to grow.

The John F. Kennedy girls basketball team is improving each and every day and working harder to turn the season into a positive one. And that improvement is starting to become evident on the scoreboard. The young Bears have gone toe-to-toe with some of the best small school teams around and they’re hoping to start turning competitive losses into big victories. “I think we’re getting a lot better,” said senior Elizabeth Vohwinkel, who serves as a tri-captain along with classmates Jaclyn Smith
By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
In a year of transition following the graduation of one of the most dynamic wrestlers the school has ever seen, you may have expected Cheektowaga Central to name several team captains to help the program remain competitive. On the contrary, Central coach Matt Haberl selected just one
and Rebecca Wesolowski. “Every day, we’re getting better as a team and learning to work better together, passing the ball and recognizing where we need to get the ball.” JFK hasn’t backed down from anyone and that’s slowly starting to result in some success. The Bears won two of four heading into late January, with one of the losses coming to ECIC IV leader Holland and the other a four-point setback against Maryvale in non-league action. The wins were far more decisive, coming by a combined 118-36 count over Buffalo Science and ECIC IV foe Lackawanna. The win over the rival Steelers was the most impressive as Kennedy dominated from start to finish and got contributions from everyone in the lineup. “It’s always nice to get
captain: Eric Bartnik. OK, so you’re thinking the Warriors are heavily counting on Bartnik’s senior leadership? They probably will be – in two years. It’s not evident in meets or in the practice room, but believe it or not, Bartnik is just a sophomore – and he’s already the unquestioned leader on the mat for the proud program. “He’s the only captain and he’s a captain as a sophomore,” Warriors’ coach Matt Haberl said. “That right there says a lot about his character and the leadership that he’s grown to provide.” Even though he’s just a 10th grader, Bartnik is in his fourth varsity season for the Warriors.
And he’s more than ready – and willing – to take on the role as the team’s top leader. “I’ve taken on a bigger leadership role this season,” the sophomore standout said. “I have to be a role model for the younger kids on the team and just keep working hard.” The fact that Bartnik has taken his captaincy role to heart has been all the more beneficial to the Warriors. He’s learned from some of the program’s greatest – including state and national champion Renaldo RodriguezSpencer, who’s now at Iowa State University after ending his tremendous Cheektowaga Central career with his 2014 graduation.
The Warriors might not have another Rodriguez-Spencer on the roster – and in reality, neither does any other team in Western New York. But Cheektowaga still expects quality performances on the mat – and Bartnik is applying his experience and teaching his current teammates – both vocally and by example. “That’s the difference, to find a captain that goes out there and does the little things,” Haberl said. “He’s learned from the years before, he understands it’s a young team and he knows we need to do it right the first time or learn from our mistakes. He’s really taken a big step forward to help the other guys out.” Not only has the standout
a win,” Bears coach Steve Sokolski said. “The girls came out and played hard and played smart, they moved the ball around, everybody scored and it’s nice to get a win. “ That win improved JFK’s overall record to 3-6 — and the Bears feel that can become much better. The improvement is already evident and Kennedy is hoping to add some more wins to that record. “I feel like we can win a lot more games than we’ve been winning,” said Smith, who leads the Bears in scoring with more than 17 points per game. “We’re playing well on defense, getting some steals and fast-breaking. Everyone’s working hard and playing as a team.” Although there have been some down times, there has never been a question about the effort. JFK has come to
play every single night and they’re starting to reap the benefits. “They work hard every single day,” Sokolski said. “We’re with teams for three quarters of every game. It’s that four or five minutes that get us. But they’re with every team that we play.” The Bears head down the stretch with some tough league games still ahead before they take on the challenge of the Class B2 Section VI playoffs. And while JFK may not be among the teams the opponents are worried about just yet, they still plan on coming to play each and every night in hopes of pulling a surprise. “You never can tell. If we shoot into the 30 percentile, we can beat some teams,” Sokolski said. “If we’re in the teens and low 20s, that’s what hurts us. They can do it; we’re still optimistic.”
sophomore stood up as a leader, he’s also continued to show excellence on the mat as well. Bartnik, the first wrestler in Haberl’s tenure to compete at the varsity level as a seventhgrader, picked up his 85th career victory on Jan. 23 with a first-period pin of Amherst’s Michael Thomas in an ECIC II dual meet. “I’m just looking to get in and out as fast as I can,” Bartnik said after that 1 minute, 48 second win. “I just want to get my team six points.” As of the end of the ECIC II dual season, Bartnik held a 21-12 record on the season. Perhaps his most impressive decision came in the ECIC
Championships on Jan. 17 at Clarence in the third place match as he scored a 6-3 decision over Eden’s Sawyer Overhoff, who had previously beaten Bartnik twice this season. On Feb. 7, Cheektowaga will host the Class B tournament and the top four in each weight will head to the Section VI tournament the following weekend at Lake Shore High School. Bartnik doesn’t have specific goals set for the postseason, he’s just going to work do advance as far as he can. “Get some wins at sectionals,” he said, “and just go as far as I can. That’s what I’m looking to do.”
Local sports Maryvale girls making strides during challenging season By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
The Maryvale High School girls basketball team figured this would be a year of rebuilding following the graduation of five key seniors, including a current Division I basketball player. And although the victories haven’t been as frequent, the Flyers are still ready to play each and every night — and they’ve shown they’re not going to back down from anyone. “Working with this group, it doesn’t seem like our record is what it is, because the girls are working so
hard and doing some good things,” Maryvale coach Tim Klimtzak said. “Especially in practice, they’re very positive. We’re working hard and getting better every day. The graduation of Ciara Rosten, who is currently averaging more than 12 minutes per game at the University of Massachusetts, was the biggest blow to the Flyers’ roster. In all, Maryvale gradated more than 38 points per game from last year’s club, that made the program’s first ever trip to the Section VI championship game. Offense has been a challenge to the Flyers, who topped 40 points just once in their first 12 games. “It’s been a long season but the girls are working hard,” Klimtzak said. “We’re struggling a bit offensively, but the girls are getting good looks and we’re getting better
day-by-day.” After a 1-10 start to the season, Maryvale has started to turn the corner, posting a pair of wins in the latter half of January. Maryvale scored a season-
high 52 points in a Jan. 26 win over Health Sciences — and as it has been all year long, the performance was a team effort. Four different Flyers scored at least eight points in the victory.
“We’ve been pretty consistent as far as spreading the ball around,” Klimtzak said after a win over crosstown rival John F. Kennedy on Jan. 15. “We’re getting contributions from everyone
on the team.” Junior Kelsey Cadwallader leads the Flyers in scoring at about 8.3 points per game and sophomore Alexa Hoiensahl is second after leading all underclassmen on last year’s club. Junior Alyssa Zbock is the team’s leader in both assists and rebounds and freshman Karli Murray is tops in steals. Senior Deannna Davis has also provided strong leadership as the team captain in her third varsity season. Maryvale approached February with a 3-6 record but the play has noticeably improved throughout the season. And with a lot of young talent on the roster, the future appears to be bright for the Flyers. “We take our growing pains but hopefully we take that next step,” Klimtzak said.

attention, and games between the rivals are becoming more anticipated each season. The last 10 years or so have been a sort of Ground Zero for the local hockey programs. After playing at the Division III level since 1980, Canisius moved to Division I competition in 1998, one season after Niagara established its Division I program. In 2003, the schools were joint hosts of the NCAA Frozen Four, setting in motion a flurry of activity which helped grow each program. Canisius became a charter member of Atlantic Hockey when the league formed for the 2003-04 season. Niagara remained a member of College HockeyAmerica until 2009-10, but still often had Canisius on
its schedule. When the Purple Eagles joined Atlantic Hockey for the 2010-11 campaign, it accelerated the importance of games against Canisius and helped foster the natural rivalry. Last weekend, the teams met twice at Dwyer Arena, where Canisius swept the games by 4-1 and 6-4 scores. The results were consistent with each team’s recent play: Canisius (12-8-6, 11-4-5 in Atlantic Hockey) extended its undefeated streak to seven games (6-0-1), its longest stretch since 2000-01, while Niagara (3-19-2, 3-13-2) dropped its sixth straight and has not won in 12 contests (0-10-2). Even though the schools are trending in opposite directions this season, the rivalry has had
its share of significant games in recent years. The schools met in the first round of the 2011 Atlantic Hockey tournament, with Canisius coming out victorious. In February 2013, the teams split a pair of games when Niagara was ranked #15 in the nation. The Purple Eagles held that same ranking a few weeks later, when the Golden Griffins scored a 5-3 win in a head-t0-head matchup in the Atlantic Hockey semifinal; Canisius went on to the NCAA Tournament, where it lost to Quinnipiac in the first round. Last weekend, the games drew decent crowds of 1,013 and 1,302 on the Niagara campus, where capacity is about 1,400. It’s easy to anticipate
potential sellouts of 2,000 when the teams eventually play each other in Canisius’new Harborcenter home next season. To boot, Niagara could turn its fortunes around soon. Before this year, it has never suffered consecutive sub-.500 seasons as a Division I program, so a quick rebound wouldn’t be surprising. Canisius is on the upswing, bolstered by a home facility it can call its own. Once the schools establish equal footing on the ice, there’s no telling how intense the rivalry will become. Who knows? It could even move beyond the traditional one we’ve seen on a wooden floor for decades.
Sampson Needs Some Shade
Wild giraffes who roam the African Savannah thrive there because of the warm temperatures, water, food, sun, and shade. The Buffalo Zoo is committed to providing the same type of environment for their giraffe population, whose newest member, Sampson, will be experiencing all kinds of FOLPDWH FKDQJH LQ KLV ÀUVW year of life. As part of continued improvements to the zoo, there are plans to build a shade structure. Giraffes already have use of an enclosed structure, as well as a large giraffe yard of approximately one-half acre. However, during the zoo’s accreditation process in 2011, it was noted that there was little to no outdoor shade. The Association of Zoo’s and Aquariums (AZA) requested that a shade structure be built to help keep the animals cool and out of the direct sunlight of the summer months. In order to achieve reaccreditation, the Buffalo Zoo needs to install this structure before 2016. Community Papers of WNY, Lamar Outdoor Advertising, and Towne MINI share a commitment to our community and are partnering together to help. You may have noticed several billboards throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area introducing Sampson to his hometown, along with featured articles in all of CPOWNY’s community newspapers. Sampson also graced the cover of WNY Health’s January 2015 edition. Our goal is to bring awareness to the zoo’s conservation efforts, the need

While the winter may seem to be continuing endlessly, there is a new bright spot to the season, and that is the area on Abbott Road that has been adorned with brightly lit LED snowflakes decoratively hung from the light poles from Dorrance to Southside Pkwy. Purchased last year and lit for the first time this season, once the streetlights were wired for the snowflakes, the decorative lights are the collaborative efforts of South Buffalo Alive, Councilman Christopher Scanlon and Mercy Hospital. “This was really a group effort, stated Councilman Scanlon, “South Buffalo Alive led the effort and reached out to our office for assistance in funding the lights. We in turn mentioned the need to CJ Urlaub, the president of Mercy Hospital, and he generously assisted in the funding. “We were happy to help, admitted Urlaub, “South Buffalo is just like home and when Chris (Scanlon) mentioned that they were looking for funding for the lights, we thought it was a great idea. We are always looking for ways to help out in the community. So while the three entities were able to purchase the Abbott lights last year, the lighting of the snowflakes was delayed until this year when the street lights were properly wired for the new decorations. Once lit, the glistening snowflakes brought a touch of seasonal sparkle to the neighborhood. South Buffalo Alive has previously purchased similar lights for McKinley Parkway and South Park Ave. While the main focus of the organization is the beautification of the area with their cultivating of the trees, shrubs, flowers and other
plant life, during the winter months the members busy themselves with adding to the holiday ambiance of the area as they coordinate the installation and removal of the electric snowflakes. They also store and maintain the lights in the warmer seasons. “We changed all the light bulbs in the older snowflakes for South Park and McKinley this year, state Marge Ryan, President of South Buffalo Alive, “We converted the 30 snowflakes to LED lightbulbs. Each fixture has 96 bulbs so it took quite a bit of time. The task to change the bulbs was taken on by Marge Ryan with the assistance of Pat Crowley, Linda Fay and Mary Lee Evans, friends and members of South Buffalo Alive. In total the nearly three thousand new LED bulbs that were changed resulted
in brighter and more energy efficient lights in the McKinley – South Park area. A total of 18 new LED snowflakes were purchased for Abbott Rd from Rileigh’s Outdoor DÊcor in Bethlehem, PA. The same company was used to purchase the lights for South Park and McKinley. Plans are already underway to raise funds for snowflake lights for the Seneca Street area. Once the Seneca St lights are purchased and installed all four major South Buffalo roadways will be decoratively lit each winter season, adding an outdoor luster to our darkest months. Any organization interested in contributing to the Seneca St endeavor can forward donations to South Buffalo Alive at 25 Coolidge Rd, Buffalo 14220 or contact Marge Ryan at 8263158 for further information.

Tifft Nature Preserve celebrated their grand reopening of their Visitor’s Center on Jan 24 and gave nature lovers the opportunity to join in a family sleepover event in the newly expanded facility. Approximately 40 people, the majority of them under the age of 15, joined in the family fun that began with a pizza party and continued on with activities that celebrated nature throughout the evening. Messinger Woods Wildlife Center brought various live birds to Tifft and talked about the owls and crows native to the area. Family members learned about the attributes of the feathered friends and how they hunt, and survive in the wild. Messinger Woods talked about the injured, sick and orphaned animals that they rescue, and how they rehabilitate the animals, allowing them to return to the wild. The young participants in the room were able to identify the screech owl, barn owl and barred owl by the end of the demonstration. A portable planetarium was set up in the community room. Kids and parents walked into the air filled igloo shaped stellar chamber to view constellations that mimicked starry sky patterns at various times of year – showing the seasonal changes of the stars. The families joined together for games and team building fun that included a penguin egg shuffle where an egg had to remain on the participants feet as they raced and shuffled across the floor to the finish line. The plank walk game had groups working together to walk on two ski sized planks in unison to beat the opposing team. Meghan

Dye, experience manager at Tifft, brought her son Aidan, 10, for the evening event. “I love coming to Tifft Nature Preserve,” stated Aidan, “I love nature and it’s always fun to check out what is happening at Tifft.” After a night of fun and movies, the new community room at the facility was used for slumber in the woods as sleeping bags were unfurled in the wooden room amidst two hundred plus wooded acres at Tifft. The morning was met with a beautiful sunrise in the new window rimmed community room – with a gorgeous view of the hills and lake as the visitors awoke - and animals just outside their door. “You can see all types of animals at Tifft Nature Preserve,” stated Kimberly Adriaansen, Program Coordinator at Tifft, “We have recently seen a pack of four coyotes, bald eagles, snowy owls and plenty of deer.”
Winter is a great time to view wildlife at the preserve, with the snow allowing for tracking and identifying of the various animals. Snowshoes are available for your hikes when the depth is at least 6 inches deep. There are several upcoming events at Tifft. Feb 7 is their Nature Maker event when kids 8 and up can make pressed flower Valentine’s Day cards. From Mon to Fri, Feb 16-20, 9am to 4 pm Tifft will hold their daylong Winter Wonders discovery Camp and the science of the season can be explored through hands-on activities, crafts and outdoor exploration. The newly expanded Visitor’s Center can be rented for parties and sleepovers for your next corporate retreat or family event. Contact Tifft Nature Preserve at 825-6397 for information on their rentals and upcoming events.

Tips to Winterize and Protect Your Home Though the list of winter weather dangers runs long, there are 10 easy steps that can ease or prevent these issues, all while creating a safer home environment during emergencies. 1. Install weather stripping. 2. Have your furnace/ heating system serviced at the beginning of each season to ensure it runs properly, and have the filters changed. 3. (NAPSI)—As autumn approaches, many people are looking forward to a break from the summer heat. However, soon that relief may turn chilly and your reliance on heating equipment will increase. The Electrical Safety Foundation International wants you to be aware of the risks associated with heating equipment and follow a few simple steps to help reduce your risk of a home fire. According to a report by the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths, responsible for an estimated 490 in 2010. The leading factors contributing to ignition in home heating equipment fires were failure to clean the device, the heat source being too close to combustibles, and a mechanical failure or malfunction of the equipment. With proper installation, use and maintenance, you can reduce your risk of property loss, injury or death resulting from the use of heating equipment. With the increased use of heating equipment, carbon monoxide incidents are also more frequent in colder months. Gas-fueled heating devices were the primary heating source re-

gasket covers. 9. Invest in an automatic home standby generator, such as those from Generac, that automatically provides power for heat and electricity when there is a power outage. They turn on as soon as the power goes out and stay on until utility power is restored. 10. If you have extra money in your budget, go for attic insulation, which can save as much as 30 percent on heating costs. As a leader in power equipment serving residential, light commercial, industrial and construction markets, Generac’s products are available through a broad network of independent dealers, retailers, wholesalers and equipment rental companies. Basic winterizing for a home can be done for less than $200, but by investing in installations like attic insulation and a Generac home standby generator, you get the best level of protection from winter storms.

Keep things that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment. • Make sure you use only equipment that displays a label indicating it has undergone independent testing by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Intertek (ETL), or the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). • Have a qualified professional install heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions. • Make sure all fuel-burning equipment is vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
