Timon welcomes international students Attending school in South Buffalo from as far away as Denmark, Germany, Japan, Italy, China and Switzerland has been quite an experience for seven young men. Most will be at Timon for a full school year. Junior Niels Otto Lind Olsen, from Denmark, who is staying with the Vaccaro family has been busy playing soccer almost everyday with the Timon JV Soccer team. Earth Science is his favorite class. Fellow Denmark student, Jakob Nielsen, also enjoys soccer and shared that Music II is his favorite class. Jakob resides with the Benzo family.
The Landgraf’’s are the host family to Till Stroehlein whose favorite class is Government with Mr. Williams. Till has been busy with football after school. The Voorhees family is hosting two of our students this year, Hiroki Okada and Markus Schweitzer. While enjoying his favorite class, Music I, Hiroki is looking forward to the spring when he will either try out for baseball or tennis. Markus will be busy with stagecrew doing sound for the upcoming Timon musical, Shrek, November 6-8. Markus has plenty of academics as well with his favorites classes, Graphic Design, Gym and Band.
Physics is top on the list for Haonan Yu’s favorite class. Residing with the Snyder family, Haonan participated in Cross Country and looks forward to a full school year at Timon. American football, as Maximillian Leon Kernen would refer to it, has kept this Switzerland native busy this fall. Maximillian is staying with Kenneth Punnett and keeps up with his studies in Physics, his favorite class. The entire Bishop Timon - St. Jude High School welcomes these fine young men and looks forwards to seeing them in the halls of Timon for the school year.
The students are from Germany, Denmark, Japan, Italy, China and Switzerland.

Movies and books signings coming to Dog Ears Bookstore & Cafe Fun-filled movie nights and book signings will take place at Dog Ears Bookstore & Cafe in the coming weeks. The nonprofit community bookstore is located at 688 Abbott Road in South Buffalo. A book-signing and spiritual readings event featuring “Crown Hill” author Christina Abt and spiritual medium Candi Thornton is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28. Abt is an accomplished local author, newspaper columnist and radio broadcaster. Her written work has been featured in national publications including an array of Chicken Soup Books and national equine publications, as well as The Buffalo News, Artvoice, Buffalo Spree, Traffic East and EVE Magazine. Her first book, “Chicken Wing Wisdom: Western New York Stories of Family, Life and Food Shared Around the Table,” became a regional best seller. Born and raised in East Aurora, Thornton has been aware of her spiritual gifts since childhood. As an adult, she spent years studying various religious practices
searching for answers and striving to learn how to control her spiritual abilities. In time, she was guided to the First Spiritualist Temple in East Aurora where she learned to work with her spirit guides and bring though only positive energy. Thornton served as a spiritual consultant to Abt in the writing of “Crown Hill.” The “Crown Hill” presentation is open to the public. Books will be available for purchase for $15.95, while 10-minute private readings by Thornton will be available for $10. October Movie Nights at Dog Ears will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, featuring the supernatural (Rrated) thriller “Donnie Darko.” Snacks will be available at a nominal cost and donations are welcome. Author Russell D. Ward will stop by the bookstore at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 10, to sign copies of his book, “Don’t ‘De’lete Me!” Ward will also give a talk promoting many ways to make us all stronger against abusing our diets, drugs, alcohol and gambling. Refreshments will be served.
In his new book, Ward adds a humorous touch to combating the desires many people face in their daily lives. He aims to give readers insight into how ridiculous it can be to get involved with certain destructive habits such as overeating, gambling, drinking and doing drugs. Ward provides different methods, in a light-hearted way, to help fight these cravings that could lead to addiction. Ward is a combat-wounded Vietnam veteran who had problems with obesity and substance abuse in the past. Once he finally understood how foolish it was to let his personal problems lead to an abusive lifestyle, he started to laugh at the many instances in which his choices kept him from being able to work, get married and raise children. Visit www.dontdeleteme.xyz for more information on his book. Dog Ears Bookstore & Cafe is also bringing back the popular bedtime stories program in November. For more information on any of these events, call 823-2665, visit www.dogearsbookstore.org or follow Dog Ears on Facebook for frequent updates.

Dog Ears welcomes mystery, intrigue By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT
Tuesday, Oct 28 join Dog Ears Bookstore and Cafe as spiritual medium Candi Thorton and author Christina Abt join forces to bring a unique event to our local bookstore. Just in time for the week of mystical forces Christina Abt will be discussing her book “Crown Hill: Love, Life and the Afterlife” which will bring you down a road where Crown Hill, a local home over a century old, unburdens its walls with stories of its past. The historical novel, spurred by Abt’s own home, gives true meaning to the phrase “if these walls could talk” – because at Crown Hill, they do. Christina Abt will discuss her book and other works and leave you pondering whether a home rich in history and energy could influence those that reside within it. Joining Abt on Oct 28 at 6:30 pm will be spiritual medium Candi Thorton, who served as Abt’s spiritual consultant during the writing of Crown Hill. Thorton, who resides in East Aurora and who has focused on her own spirituality since her formative years, will be conducting spiritual readings after the book signing event. The fee for a ten minute

Comptroller Mychajliw kicks off Costumes for a Cause Campaign
Erie County Comptroller Stefan Mychajliw was joined by a “tri-partisan” group of elected officials to kick off the “Costumes for a Cause” charitable initiative. The program gives children in need free Halloween costumes for Trick-or-Treating. The costume collections begin now and end Wednesday, Oct. 22. For one week (Thursday, Oct. 23 through Thursday, Oct. 30) children and their families will be able to select a free Halloween costume at the Seneca Babcock Community Center, 1168 Seneca St., Buffalo. “This effort is near and dear to my heart. Growing up poor near William and Fillmore, I understand how tough it is for families to make ends meet. My siblings and I grew up without a lot. Now we have an opportunity to help show that we are the ‘City of Good Neighbors.’ It is great to have local leaders from all parties come together for a great cause,” Mychajliw said. Joining the Erie County Comptroller in this “tri-partisan” charitable effort is New York State Senator Timothy M. Kennedy (D), New York State Assemblyman Michael P. Kearns (D), Erie County Legislator Joseph C. Lorigo (C), and Cheektowaga Councilwoman Diane Benczkowski (D). “These children deserve to enjoy Halloween just like everyone else. Any help we can give them really helps make the holiday special,” Senator Kennedy said. “Giving children a chance to enjoy Halloween is certainly not a partisan issue. We can all get behind our community’s kids,” As-
semblyman Kearns said. “As public servants, we have a unique opportunity to give back to our communities. This campaign for kids is something truly special and I’m honored to be a part of it,” Legislator Lorigo said. “All of us involved were elected to help people. There’s nothing like the feeling you get from lending a hand to young people in need,” Councilwoman Benczkowski said. “It’s refreshing to be able to put politics aside and join together for such a phenomenal cause. I know the children are extremely grateful to live in such a generous community,” Legislator Burke said. New and gently used costumes are being accepted at multiple drop-off points during regular business hours, including: •District Office of NYS Senator Timothy M. Kennedy, 2239 South Park Ave., Buffalo •District Office of Erie County Legislator Patrick B. Burke, 155 Cazenovia St., Buffalo •Seneca Babcock Community Center, 1168 Seneca St., Buffalo •Recreation Center Arena, 2600 Harlem Rd., Cheektowaga •Alexander Center, 275 Alexander Ave., Cheektowaga •Dartwood Community Center, 222 Autumnwood Dr., Cheektowaga •Lorigo Law Firm, 101 Slade Ave., Unit 2, West Seneca •District Office of NYS Assemblyman Councilman Michael P. Roswell Park now offering screening mammograms for general public Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) announces the expansion of its breast imaging services to the general public, offering routine screening mammography to non-patients in an effort to improve breast cancer screening rates and increase detection of breast cancer at the earliest, most curable stages. Current statistics show that as many as half the women who should be receiving an annual mammogram are not getting this important cancer screening. “We are pleased to be able to offer our technology and expertise for breast cancer detection to all women,” says Ermelinda Bonaccio, MD, director of breast imaging at RPCI. “Cancer detection, diagnosis and treatment are our specialty. Applying our capabilities
to breast cancer screening is an important part of our mission.” Mammography is the only screening test that’s proven to reduce a woman’s risk of dying from the disease. But in the City of Buffalo, a lack of facilities that offer mammography screening makes it more difficult for women to get the screening. “Currently, there are only five U.S. Food and Drug Administration-certified mammography centers in operation in the City of Buffalo, including Roswell Park; in 2012, there were 11 facilities,” says Christy Widman, a community outreach manager with the Western New York Cancer Coalition (WNYC2) Center to Reduce Disparities at RPCI. In addition, Erie County has the highest
breast cancer mortality rate compared to the rest of New York State and has the highest breast cancer mortality rate among African-Americans in the state, too. A new and larger breast imaging center will be located within the 11-story clinical sciences center, currently under construction adjacent to the main Roswell Park hospital, but the need for these services was deemed too urgent to wait for the building’s completion. At RPCI, screening mammograms are batch read by two RPCI radiologists. Studies show this method of batch reading lowers the rate of false positives, which means fewer women need to return for additional images. The breast imaging and
diagnostic services now available to the general public include: •Mammography, both screening and diagnostic types •Advanced breast imaging such as ultrasound, breast MRI and digital mammography •Pathology analysis by pathologists who focus exclusively on breast cancer •Access to genetic counseling, the Breast Cancer Risk Assessment and Prevention Program for those at high risk of developing cancer and the multidisciplinary breast cancer care team. Afternoon and evening appointments (3 to 6:20 p.m.) are reserved for women getting a screening mammogram, and free onsite parking is provided.

Kostek steps up as leader, scorer for Timon soccer By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
The Bishop Timon High School boys soccer team was thinking repeat entering the season after winning a league championship for the first time in more than three decades last year. But head coach Tom Finn knew they he had lost a large chunk of the key players from the team that enjoyed that historical season. And in a preseason interview, he had a significant expectations for this season: “We’re going to be looking
for Kyle Kostek to step in and fill some of that void.” Finn said. His wishes have been granted — and a whole lot more. Kostek went from a very nice complementary player in 2013 to a full-fledged superstar in 2014. He was Timon’s leading scorer in the regular season and was a key cog in the Tigers’ chances of keeping the league title in South Buffalo. “It’s been amazing how much he’s contributed,” Finn said after a late-season win over Cardinal O’Hara. “I don’t think he’s scored outside of 12 yards, but anything in there, he’s over it.” Timon graduated a strong class at the end of the 2013-14 school, including Aaron Gould and also lost Japanese foreign exchange students Eiki Sakugawa and Eiki Akiyama, who left
Kyle Kostek (17) led Timon in goals and points during the season with 19 and 53, respectively.
after strong junior seasons. Nobody on Timon’s roster has stepped up more than Kostek, but the senior was quick to point out that a lot of Tigers have improved their play “I’m happy with the way I’m playing and all my teammates, too,” Kostek said. “We lost a lot of guys; people stepped up and filled the gaps.” Kostek has been lighting up scoreboards all season long for the Tigers. In the regular season, he led Timon in goals (19) and total points (53) in 19 games. He was also second to Drew Johnson in assists, 15 to Johnson’s 17. “It’s not just the goal scoring,” Finn said. “He’s taken on a great leadership role. We lost a couple of real good foreign exchance students and a couple of key seniors to graduation that
we’re super for us. We needed players to step up, and he’s done that.” Kostek is a key member of a huge 14-man senior class for the Tigers, who have seen all of those players develop over the last four seasons. He serves as an alternate captain along with junior sweeper Brian Walsh while senior standout Drew Johnston is the team captain. Timon entered Friday’s season-finale against Niagara Catholic with a 15-4 overall record and with high hopes of repeating as the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association small school champ. “We’re looking to win the championship again, that’s our main goal,” Kostek said. “We have really high hopes. The sky’s the limit, going for the repeat.”
South Park soccer’s sees success despite record By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
A first glance, the 6-9 regular-season record posted by the South Park High School’s boys soccer team might not seem overly impressive. But in reality, the Sparks were so very close to much bigger things. A bounce here and there and that record could have vaulted South Park much higher in the City League Division II standings. Seven of the Sparks nine-regular season losses were by one goal — and
of those, five came in overtime. “A couple goals have made a difference, tough to swallow sometimes,” South Park Josh Miller said. “But that’s soccer, that’s why it’s fun to play and that’s why it’s tough to play at times.”\South Park ended regular season play at 6-9 overall and 6-8 in City League play. But while the losses were narrow, the wins were impressive. In fact, five of South Park’s six victories were by multiple goals. “They’re listening and they’re getting better,” Smith said. “It’s the one thing we tell them, if you listen and you work hard, we’ll get better.” The Sparks lost five of their final six games of
the regular season - four of the losses coming by a single goal. The win was an 11-1 rout of Buffalo Arts. But regardless of the standings, the Sparks have proven they aren’t going to stop playing until the final buzzer. Despite the record that was below .500, the Sparks widely outplayed their competition. In fact, South Park scored 58 goals and allowed only 38 for the season. We’re fighting,” Smith said after a 3-2 overtime loss to MST Prep. “The kids keep fighting, that’s all we ask. Junior forward Kaye Reh finished the regular year with 29 goals, most in the division and also
collected nine assists. Meanwhile, forward Alzubair Goba has 15 goals and 18 assists, midfielder Enfield Clayton has three goals and 10 assists and midfielder Joe Dettman has four goals and two assists. Midfielder Zaid Saleh has a pair of assists and junior defenseman also collected an assist. South Park entered the postseason with some optimism after going toe-to-toe with most of its division opponents. And the improvement of the program continues to show on the field. “This has been much better than last year,” Reh said. “We all work hard to get better”
The South Park boys soccer team lost seven games by just one goal this season.

DeMarsh earns 100th victory, still has one goal in mind By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
Nick DeMarsh took over the struggling women’s soccer team at Buffalo State College a dozen years ago with one goal in mind. “I wanted to win the conference and represent this school on the national level at the NCAAs,” said DeMarsh, a three-time All-SUNYAC player for the Bengals who assisted the men’s program for four years prior to becoming the women’s head coach. That has not happened yet. “So we still have some work to do,” DeMarsh is quick to point out. But the program has come a long way under DeMarsh’s direction. DeMarsh entered this weekend’s homestand with 101 career victories. In the 21 seasons prior to DeMarsh taking over, the Bengals won 114 games. “I have to give a lot of credit to Jerry Boyes, our athletic director, for allowing me to build the program and build the team,” DeMarsh said. “This was a situation that really needed to be built from the ground up.” DeMarsh was teaching at Native American Magnet school and coaching the Bengals part-time during his first two seasons, before Boyes promoted him to a full-time coaching position. “When you are a part-time coach, you are going to get part-time results,” DeMarsh said. “We really didn’t start

Buffalo State women’s soccer coach Nick DeMarsh has 101 career coaching wins. winning until I got the job fulltime.” The Bengals have posted winning records in seven of the past 11 seasons, and last year finished second in the SUNYAC.
With a very young roster this season, the Bengals are 6-7-1 and 3-4 in conference play. Buffalo State hosts New Paltz (8-6-2, 2-3-2) at 3 p.m. Friday. A win would solidify the Bengals at sixth place in
the SUNYAC standings and keep them out of the play-in round of the postseason tournament. “We want to take it one game at a time, and really, all that matters for us is our next
game,” DeMarsh said. Buffalo State hosts defending champion Oneonta at 10 a.m. Saturday and wraps up the regular season Oct. 29 with a non-conference home game against St.
John Fisher. When DeMarsh took over the Bengals program he had players who weren’t even starters on their high school teams. DeMarsh, who lives in North Buffalo and is the director of coaching for the Kenmore Soccer Club, has extended his recruiting range throughout the state and into New Jersey – and even has one player on the team from California. But the Bengals are captained by local recruits in senior Liz Malinowski (Williamsville South) and junior Gabrianna Boldinski (Kenmore East). “Liz came to us with great experience in terms of highlevel club soccer and has really learned the ropes of college soccer,” DeMarsh said. “She’s a very smart player, a good student, and a good example for our younger players.” Boldinski is “probably the best center defender in the SUNYAC,” DeMarsh said. “She’s an absolute monster of a ball-winner. I could probably player her at any position on the field.” Sophomrore midfielder Katie Shaw (Newfane) has been key contributor for the Bengals this year and is pushing to be a captain next season, DeMarsh said. With 100 wins in his review mirror, DeMarsh has no plans to stop before he reaches his ultimate goal. “I’m pretty stubborn,” he said. “I would never leave the job undone.”

No Frills Buffalo releases two books by local authors No Frills Buffalo publishing company has announced the release of two new books by local authors: “Convergence” by Deborah Madar and “Mommy, Can I Have That” by Elizabeth Cosgrove Feeney. Madar was born in Buffalo and has been a Chautauqua County resident for most of her life. She taught high school and college English for 26 years and currently resides with her husband in Bemus Point. The following is the description for “Convergence:” When a human connection is made unexpectedly, out of nowhere, hope arises; life seems full of possibilities and worth living, even in the darkest times. So concludes Leigh Ann Fray’s latest Convergences column, through which she observes and explores how fate can in-
tercede and transform lives. Suddenly, chance intervenes in her own life when she receives a flattering email from a long forgotten boyfriend. He wonders: Would she be interested in reconnecting, for old time’s sake? Phil Perrero’s true motivation for reaching out to her, however, is much more complicated. Charlotte White, an emotionally unstable young woman, is obsessed with Leigh Ann. When she discovers Phil’s rendezvous plan, “The Voice” inside Charlotte’s head insists she must prevent this reunion. When the two strangers converge in Leigh Ann’s home one day, the tragedy that unfolds devastates Leigh Ann. This convergence forces her to confront the question: What is her role in this catastrophe? Is she a victim or the catalyst?
“Mommy, Can I Have That?” is a book of recipes that people with certain allergies can eat. In this case, the foods are free of eggs, dairy products, peanuts and tree nuts. “This book is about making recipes with everyday ingredients found in your kitchen without causing you to spend $30 to make a pan of brownies,” the author said. Cosgrove Feeney is a wife and stay-at-home mom with two sons, the youngest of which was born with food allergies. She has taken family recipes and converted them into safe, delicious recipes the entire family can enjoy. There are allergy free foods included in the book that cannot be purchased in stores, such
