South Park seniors get ready for college By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT

With graduation just a few months away high school seniors and their parents are sending in college applications, applying for scholarships and working out financial aid issues. There are a few dates that they will want to take note of to assist with their college prep tasks. Feb 7 from 9am to 1pm Buffalo Public Schools will hold their annual College, Career and Scholarship Expo at Burgard High School, 400 Kensington Ave. The expo is designed for students in grades 9-12 and their parents or guardians and it gives a

wide range of workshops covering topics involving financial aid awards and loans, college and EAP application information, tips on choosing the right college, and scholarship information. Representatives will be on site from various college admissions departments and there will be instant admissions to various 2-year colleges in our area. In addition parents can receive free income tax preparation, by appointment, by calling 887-2671. Assistance with completing the mandatory Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application will also be available. The Feb 7 one day event answers many questions

students and their parents and guardians have regarding assistance that is available. Students from all schools are welcome to attend. On Jan 20 from 6 – 7:30 pm public school high school seniors and parents that are interested in applying for the Say Yes Scholarship are invited to attend the Say Yes Financial Aid Overview where the qualifications and application process will be discussed. The overview will be held at 712 Main Street, Buffalo 14202. Seating is limited and reservations can be scheduled on their website at www.sayyesbuffalo.org. Say Yes Applications are presently available online and must be completed

by May 1. The Say Yes Buffalo Tuition Scholarship to SUNY/CUNY schools is available to Say Yes eligible students regardless of family income. Additional details are available on their website and at the upcoming overview discussion night. With college costs increasing each year higher learning preparation events such as these assist students and their families to be better informed and prepared for the application and financial aid process. Representatives at the events offer information on what to expect in the coming school year as the student ventures to their next academic step.

The Health Care Career Club at Timon offers our young men the opportunity to explore the field of health care as a possible career choice. Our students attend field trips during the school year to health care sites such as Mercy Flight, The American Red Cross, the Harmac Medical Supply Company, and Dental Clinics, as well as various colleges and universities that provide training in health care professions. Membership in the Health Care Career Club leads to participation in the Health Care and Health Sciences Pathway Program for

our students in the junior and senior years. This program offers rotations and internships to our upper class students at various health care sites. This exploration into the health care realm is offered through a partnership with Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School, Mount Mercy Academy, the Catholic Health Care System, and Trocaire College. It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about the clinical and non-clinical career opportunities in the growing health care field throughout their years at Bishop Timon.

Hundreds of Western New Yorkers flocked to the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens on Dec 28 for their annual Dollar Day event. The one day a year when admission for all ages is just $1 brought out families and couples, groups of friends and seniors for a day of checker games amidst foliage, waterfall watching and sandbox playing. “I haven’t been here in eight years,” admitted one busy mom who brought along her four children for the first time, “My daughter loves the water pump in the Wegman’s Family Garden, and my son is thrilled with the scavenger hunt.” The Wegman’s Family Garden hosts weekly Saturday programming, 11am – 1 pm for kids 4-10 yrs. Each week the garden provides activities that engage children in exploring the wonders of the plant world and the importance of healthy eating. Upcoming events include a “Butter Dance Party” and the “Eat a Rainbow” event. All activities are peanut-free and offer a weekly safe learning environment that is free with admission price at the Gardens. Jan 24 will open a new Orchid Exhibit at the Gardens. In addition to the beautiful collection of cymbidiums the Gardens will showcase a vast array of colorful orchids in bloom throughout the Gardens. Special features will include artistic window displays that will demonstrate the ease of growing your own orchids at home. The exhibit will run through March 1. For the true gardening aficionado the Botanical Gardens, in conjunction with Collette Vacations and the

Keep warm, keep safe (NAPSI)—As autumn approaches, many people are looking forward to a break from the summer heat. However, soon that relief may turn chilly and your reliance on heating equipment will increase. The Electrical Safety Foundation International wants you to be aware of the risks associated with heating equipment and follow a few simple steps to help reduce your risk of a home fire. According to a report by the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths, responsible for an estimated 490 in 2010. The leading factors contributing to ignition in home heating equipment fires were failure to clean the device, the heat source being too close to combustibles, and a mechanical failure or malfunction of the equipment. With proper installation, use and maintenance, you can reduce your risk of property loss, injury or death resulting from the use of heating

equipment. With the increased use of heating equipment, carbon monoxide incidents are also more frequent in colder months. Gas-fueled heating devices were the primary heating source responsible for nonfire carbon monoxide poisonings. Carbon monoxide is odorless, invisible and potentially deadly. Be sure to continue testing your carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms each month to help keep yourself and your loved ones safe. More Safe Heating Behaviors • All heaters need space. Keep things that can burn at least three feet away from heating equipment. • Make sure you use only equipment that displays a label indicating it has undergone independent testing by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Intertek (ETL), or the Canadian Standards Association (CSA).

Most carriers deliver papers in their own neighborhoods, and there is no collection of money involved. To apply for an independent carrier position, you must be at least 11 years of age. Call 668-5223, extension 8161 for details.

The Canisius College Institute for the Study of Animal Human Relations (ISHAR) presents acclaimed filmmaker Michael Tobias, PhD, on Friday, Jan. 16 and Saturday, Jan. 17 in the Science Hall Atrium. Both events are free and open to the public. From 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Tobias will screen the rarely seen “director’s cut” of his critically acclaimed PBS feature documentary Mad Cowboy (2006). The film tells the story of Howard Lyman, a fourth generation cattle farmer who turned vegan. He believes that the chemicals and herbicides used in his farming poisoned his land and may have been responsible for his brother’s death at 32. The tumor on Lyman’s spine may have been the result of those same chemicals. Following a miraculous surgery, Lyman abandoned farming to assume his major role as a lobbyist in the animal rights and vegan movements. From 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Tobias will give a lecture entitled, “The Many Challenges of Coexistence.” He will present images and footage gathered from his more than 100 ecological films which date back more three decades over a tumultuous environmental history. In addition, Tobias will share his views

WNY military honored at Russell’s Steaks, Chops & More By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR

During the holiday season, it is easy sometime to just think about yourself and your family. The hustle and bustle of this time of year normally has something to do with that. So, when someone takes the time do something nice for others, it makes the holidays that much more special. Russell Salvatore didn’t need to go out of his way Sunday night to put on a special dinner at Russell’s Steaks, Chops & More. He wanted to. Salvatore hosted 18 young men and women, and their families, in a show of appreciation for their dedication and service to the United States. All the young men and women that were honored are attending West Point, the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy. “To me it feels great,”

said Salvatore, before the reception started. I feel very, very proud to do this. The entire staff feels very proud. It shows that we have fine young people growing up in the United States.” The event had all the young men and women from Western New York dress up in their dress uniforms. It started off with a reception at 5:30 p.m. before dinner at 7 p.m. During the reception, it gave these young individuals a chance to catch up with friends and family. After the reception, all the Cadets and Midshipmen where introduced one by one before into the dining room. From there a prayer was given, followed by a toast. The generosity given by Salvatore and his staff was not lost on the Cadets from West Point. Williamsville South High School graduate Maria Manna said she was able to talk to Salva-

tore during the reception and thanked him for everything he did for them. “We our so appreciative of it [the dinner],” stated Manna. “He [Mr. Salvatore] is so generous to do this. He was enjoying himself, I think. “ Giving back to the community is nothing new for Salvatore. For years he has helped out the Western New York community in different ways. This was just one more thing he wanted to do for those young men and women who chose to attend one of the academies and fight and defend the country from different acts of war. “It feels great,” stated Salvatore. “It always feels great to give back to anyone who served our country. We did everything we could for them. It feels good. They are great looking young men and women.”

IT’S ALWAYS WORTH A TRIP TO THE MARKET!

Penn Dixie selling ‘What do you mean, Dinosaurs didn’t live in Hawai’i?’ Dr. Rick Batt, paleontologist and Penn Dixie life member has published a book on “What do you mean, Dinosaurs didn’t live in Hawai’i?” This will make a great birthday or holiday gift for kids of all ages. Penn Dixie will be selling these books for $12.95, plus sales tax $1.13. If they are shipped there will be an additional $3 charge for postage and handling. Checks may be made out to Penn Dixie and sent to P.O. Box 772, Hamburg, NY 14075. Batt and his wife were in Kaua`i visiting a friend who is an expert on the geology of the Hawaiian Islands when he said, “These islands are a great place to explore geology and see it in action. I know you’re really into dinosaurs; too bad they didn’t live here so you could dig some up and feel more at home.” This comment inspired the question posed in this book, “What do you mean, dinosaurs didn’t live in Hawai`i?” To discover the answer, they take a look at both when and how dinosaurs lived and the history of the development of the Hawaiian Islands. They uncover some basic concepts of geology that can help us to better understand the world in which we live. “Well done, both in text and illustrations,” said Theodore Anderson, supervisor of student teachers and retired middle school earth science and biology teacher. “This book presents concepts and evidences in a much more interesting and reader-friendly way than any texts I’ve ever seen. Great graphics to spice up the text. I enjoyed it and re-affirmed prior concepts, and I’m 65.” Batt is a geologist with more than 25 years of experience teaching at the college level. His main interests include paleontology, plate tectonics, and the geology and scenery of diverse regions. He has collaborated with science educators; has presented talks and workshops on dinosaurs to public school classes and teachers; and has explored the geology, natural history and culture of several of the Hawaiian Islands.

Local sports Timon basketball’s 4OT win over St. Mary’s sparks team By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

Off to a sluggish start to the boys basketball season, Bishop Timon was in need of a spark. One of the more memorable victories the program has seen in a while just might be what was needed. Two days before Christmas, the Tigers endured four overtimes at St. Mary’s of Lancaster and escaped with a hard-fought 82-80 Monsignor Martin Athletic Association victory - one Timon hopes will prove to be a springboard to bigger success. “We needed that,” Tigers coach Joe Mihalics said. “We needed to know we can still battle, even though we have a lot of cleaning up to do. But it’s a great win, these kids really battled and left everything on the floor.” The slow start for the Tigers came after a snowstorm that cancelled school for nearly two weeks and a football run to the MMAA championship game that kept several basketball players busy. Timon opened the season 1-4 on the hardwood against its usually-tough nonleague schedule. The league opener was also expected to be a good one but not this good. In a rematch of last year’s Manhattan Cup semifinal, won by the Tigers, Timon had to work for 2 1/2 hours to get a MMAA victory. “That win was crazy,” Tigers senior Claudious Modi said. “First league game, to win like that, I’m proud of my

Dennis Mann, left, and the Timon basketball team beat St. Mary’s 82-80 in a game that went to four overtimes on Dec. 23. teammates. We all battled; I was just tired at the end of game - we all were, but we kept on going.” The Dec. 23 marathon featured a number of standouts for the Tigers, who needed everyone to hold off the he-

roics of Lancers’ star Takal Molson. Timon got a number of clutch shots in the fourth quarter and overtimes from the likes of Joe Harrison, who led the team with 21 points, as well as Will and Quinton Lamar.

“A game like that, everybody battled their heart out, it’s a shame somebody had to lose,” Mihalics said. “It was a battle; the guys were fighting for every loose ball, big shots both ways. It was a fun game early in the year.”

League play finally gets into full swing for Timon on Jan. 6 with a battle against St. Joe’s. After reaching the finals last year, the Tigers have their sights set on winning it all in 2015. And if the first taste of league is a sign

of things to come, it’ll be a long and fun ride. “It’s a good win for us,” Harrison said outside the visiting locker room at St. Mary’s. “It’s a big momentum boost and always great to get a Monsignor Martin win.”

Local sports Clutch Kaczor has relished in big moments for Mercy hoops

By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

Courtney Kaczor has taken her fair share of big shots for the Mount Mercy Academy girls basketball team — and many of the biggest have found their way to the bottom of the net. She’s made so many that a Magic fan might think she feels no pressure anymore, but on the contrary, the senior standout guard still admits to feeling some butterflies. But that sure doesn’t stop her from letting them fly from long range when her team needs her the most. “I get kinds nervous sometimes because I don’t know if it’s going to go in,” Kaczor said. “But it’s a chance you have to take.” If the big shot is needed, the Magic know they can count on Kaczor, who has made a lot of big ones during her three-year varsity basketball career for Mercy. And she may be nervous, but she sure doesn’t show it. “She’s a senior and she wants that shot,” Mercy coach John Glose said. “She wants to be in that moment and she’s been clutch for us.” Of all the big shots Kaczor has made, perhaps the biggest came last season. Her 3-pointer in the final

minute gave Mercy the lead for keeps in a 35-33 win over Good Counsel in the state Catholic Class B (small school) state championship game. Her clutch shots also came in handy in a pair of early-season wins over rival Nichols that sparked a 6-0 start to the season for the defending state champs. Mercy never rested on its laurels from a year ago, immediately getting to work on a repeat. That devotion is evident in the early going and don’t look for the Magic to let up any time soon. “Not only are we a skilled, good team, but we’re also a team that’s looking to outwork you every night,” Glose said. “If we can combine that talent with hard work and hustle and determination, that’s going to be a tough combination to stop. “They’re really into it. They play all summer and they play together. It’s pretty unique, I don’t know how many high schools can say their varsity plays together all summer, and that really helps us. ‘ Kaczor is part of a memorable senior class that also includes guards Emily Sheehan and forwards Emily Benes and Maddie O’Neil. That group has a lot of wins together and they plan on finishing on a similarly successful note. “Everyone is really doing really well,” Kaczor said. “This is the last season for me; I just don’t want to miss out on anything.”

DAN HICKLING

Courtney Kaczor, a senior, sank a crucial 3-pointer in the final minute to give Mercy the lead in a 3533 win over Good Counsel in the state Catholic Class B state championship game last year.

Timon students prepare to load gifts into the Timon Bus

Timon’s Christmas for Others For over seventeen years, the Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School Community has adopted several families within the local community who are facing challenging times and hardships. This year, fourteen families received gifts from students, faculty and staff as well as alumni families who participated in purchasing items on the family’s wish list. Personalized wish lists include items such as clothing, toys, books, art supplies, CDs and

learning toys. After loading the hundreds of gifts onto the Timon buses, the gifts were distributed to the families by Timon students on Thursday, December 18, 2014. Many of the families adopted by Timon are single parent households with anywhere between two and five children. Many not only request toys for the holiday but also food.

Brogan receives award In recognition of his enduring support for Daemen College, Dr. Michael Brogan, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, was presented a Distinguished Honoree Award at the 2014 National Philanthropy Day luncheon held Nov. 12. Brogan was among other award winners recognized at the Western New York Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals event to celebrate donors, volunteers, foundations, leaders, corporations, and others engaged in philanthropy in the local community. “We nominated Dr. Brogan for this award because he is the epitome of the spirit of Daemen College,” said Dr. Richanne C. Mankey, vice president for institutional advancement. “A powerful example of his dedication followed the tragic loss of his grandson, which led to the creation of the Paiten J. Meyers-Brogan Scholarship to benefit students with physical disabilities. His compassion is truly an inspiration to us all.” During his nearly 30-year tenure at Daemen, Brogan has been instrumental in securing multiple grants and has generously supported the college in various ways. His affiliation with Daemen started as a student, having received a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy and later

Dr. Michael Brogan returned to the college to earn a doctor of physical therapy. He also holds a doctorate in educational administration and a master’s degree in health science education and evaluation, both from the University at Buffalo. Since 1985, Brogan has served in various academic capacities, including as dean of the college’s Health and Human Services Division, chair of the Physical Therapy Department and academic coordinator of clinical education. In addition, he’s an associate professor of physical therapy, a program he has taught in for 25 years. A national expert and certified wound care specialist, Brogan was recently selected for the prestigious Fulbright Specialist Program, which connects U.S. scholars and professionals with counterparts at overseas institutions. He resides in South Buffalo.
