After the storm - flood waters cause concern By Catherine Miller
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
The Snowvember storm that took South Buffalo and the southtowns by surprise was not the only concern for area residents during the month. Record high temperatures hit the region just six days after the storm that dumped nearly eight feet of snow in areas of Western New York. The sixty-degree temperatures that fell upon the region on Monday, Nov 24 wasted no time in melting away the mounds of accumulated snow, causing widespread water flow issues throughout area basements, creeks and rivers.
Cazenovia and Buffalo creeks were on the watch list for areas that could result in flooding. As the temperatures rose so did the water’s level. Buffalo Police personnel were stationed at various bridge crossings to alert city officials and passing motorists of any possible flooding problems. Buffalo Fire Department personnel rode in golf carts the length of the creek watching water levels throughout Cazenovia Park and the Legion Drive area. While the creeks rose to near flood level at eleven feet, flooding damages remained minimal compared to the havoc that the snow storm a week earlier unleashed on the area.
Buffalo police officers held vigil at the edge of Cazenovia Creek throughout the night on Monday and into Tuesday morning. The concern was that any ice lodged up the creek that broke through could produce a rapid rise in the creek’s level, and could strike the bottom of the bridges, and the wiring the underpass of the bridges contained, causing additional damage. While the water-logged ground caused flooding worries, another cause for concern was with trees that may fall due to the softened ground. Evergreens and other conifers known for their shallow root system were particularly susceptible to damage as the ground
below them grew saturated and unstable. While minimal damage in the South Buffalo and southtowns area were sustained, the flood warnings and preparedness of the emergency personnel including the National Guard and others helped to ease the concerns of the already weather-worn residents. Governor Andrew Cuomo stated that Western New York would need to have sustained a minimum of $27 million in damage to quality for aid from FEMA and encouraged all residents to save receipts for any damage. This would include damages from the snow storm as well as the resultant flooding and water damages.
Cazenovia Creek level rises above flood stage Monday afternoon.

Raising a glass to Councilman Scanlon On Thursday, Dec. 11, the Buffalo Irish Center will join with Guinness to “Raise A Glass to Councilman Chris Scanlon. Scanlon actively supported the Buffalo Irish Center in its quest to compensate when the heritage center was forced to give up its monthly Bingo nights. His support for the BIC new fundraisers, Under the Tent and the BIC Golf Classic, allowed the center to earn much needed funds. The Under the Tent nights proved to be a free, family-oriented event that brought friends back to the Irish Heritage District of South Buffalo to enjoy music, food and the “craic. Scanlon has been at the ready to advise and assist the Buffalo Irish Center in its mission to “Keep the Traditions Alive. A lifelong resident of South Buffalo, Scanlon is the son of John and Paula Scanlon. One of seven children, Scanlon and his entire family has a long history of strong ties to South Buffalo. Scanlon has spent much of his adult life working to better and give back to his community. His commitment to South Buffalo is underscored in his dedication at organizing and volunteering at various community based and charitable events in South Buffalo, including the Jack Donohue Memorial Run, the South Buffalo Reunion, the Bishop Timon High School Fall 5k Challenge and the Bishop Timon High School Lawn Fete. After spending more than 10 years in the private sector, including managerial roles at
UPS and the Western New York Pub Group Inc., Scanlon decided to dedicate himself full-time to his passion of serving his community and to fulfill his desire to improve upon South Buffalo as a great place to live and raise a family, just as he remembered as a child. Since becoming the south district councilmember, Scanlon has actively made an impact on behalf of South Buffalo residents. He has worked closely with city housing inspectors, housing court officials and A-District police officers to address issues of blighted housing and absentee landlords that are plaguing some of South Buffalo’s neighborhoods. He meets regularly with constituents, block clubs and community based organizations to ensure all city services are being effectively delivered and their concerns about quality of life issues in the south district are being fully addressed. A graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas School, Bishop Timon St. Jude and Erie Community College, Scanlon resides in South Buffalo with his wife, Katie, and their son, Thomas. The Raise your Glass Event is will take place from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11 in the Buffalo Irish Center. It is free and open to the public. Engraving of Guinness glasses will be available during the event. A voluntary donation to the Leary Firefighters Fund will help raise monies for this charity.

Local students given opportunity to study abroad “Qualified high school students are offered a unique opportunity to spend an academic year, three-month program or summer holiday in Europe, Asia, North and South America, New Zealand, Australia or South Africa as part of the ASSE International Student Exchange Program,” announced Leanne Bell, eastern director of ASSE. “Until a few years ago only a fortunate few could afford to spend a school year or summer abroad. ASSE has changed all of that,” Bell continued. Students 15 to 18 years of age qualify on the basis of academic performance, character references and a genuine desire to experience abroad with a volunteer host family in one of the many ASSE host countries. “ASSE families abroad are carefully
screened to provide a caring environment in which students can learn the language and culture of their host country,” Bell explained. Summer exchange students live with a family abroad who might speak some English. Year and shorter-term three-month program students need not have learned a foreign language as they receive language and cultural instruction as part of the ASSE program. ASSE students attend regular high school classes along with their new teenage friends. “ASSE exchange students learn by living the language and culture of their new host country,” Bell added. Students or families interested in more information about the ASSE programs should call 1-800-677-2773 or visit ASSE’s website at www.asse.com.

Pistol Permit Office will close to public on Wednesdays With the goal of reducing the time it takes to get a pistol permit in Erie County, County Clerk Chris Jacobs announced that beginning Dec. 3, the Pistol Permit Office will be closed to the public on Wednesdays to process new applications. This initiative comes just after Jacobs and his team completed a comprehensive “Re-engineering” analysis of the Pistol Permit Department. “After the enactment of the NYSAFE Act we took in as many new pistol permit applications in the first four months as we did the entire previous year. It was unprecedented,” Jacobs said. “We needed to determine what processes we could modify to improve the overall function of this office; primarily improving the time it takes to obtain a pistol permit.” The Re-Engineering Project led by Karen Kirbis, a loaned executive from Audubon Machinery, identified several system enhancements that optimized resources currently available. It also identified that with
current staffing levels, it is not possible to handle the necessary back office operations involved in processing a new pistol permit application, while also servicing over 100 customers a day. “Our sole function on Wednesdays will be to process pistol permit applications and to get the files ready to send to the judge for approval,” stated Will Fowler, supervisor of the Pistol Permit Department. “Our time will be spent working on new pistol permit applications, preparing files to go to police agencies for background checks and updating current permit holder information in our system. Activities that cannot currently be done efficiently when trying to take care of the volume of customers we assist on a daily basis.” Since the passage of the NYSAFE Act it has taken between 12-15 months to obtain a pistol permit in Erie County. “Our goal with the new office hours is to cut the time it takes to obtain a permit by 50 percent,” Fowler said.

Autobiography released By Catherine Miller
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
He sings, song-writes, and at times dances a few steps on YouTube videos. Now Buffalo’s musically inclined diocesan priest, born and bred in South Buffalo, becomes an autobiographical author. If you ever wondered what it was like to grow up in a path headed for the pulpit – here’s your chance. Not your average autobiography – in “Made to Praise Him: Finding My Song” Father William Quinlivan, presently the pastor at Blessed Sacrament Church, looks at his early years from the viewpoint of others around him including his siblings, parents, friends and extended family. Relaying stories of his childhood often as others relayed them at family gatherings, Fr. Bill takes a humorous jaunt down his childhood memories and the vocation tales that led him to be known as the most musical priest in Buffalo. Amongst other topics, Fr. Quinlivan shares stories of why young boys throw dead birds in the air and why he had issues with the Easter Bunny. You will see frequent references to his childhood parish of St. Teresa’s as he describes his days from the choir, to bingo to raffle ticket selling and all the fun that occurred in between. From the days when he was a photographer and a writer of jokes for Joan Rivers to today’s era of writing songs and lyrics for multiple CDs, Fr. Quinlivan describes the story of his vocation and how the path to priesthood is not always as direct as
you may think. “I was so glad that I kept looking for what I was truly meant to do,” states Fr. Bill who lists past occupations of everything from medical records file clerk to struggling screen writer, “When I finally asked God what he wanted me to do, that’s when I found my calling. I am fortunate that all the things I love to do - my writing, my music – I can use all of that in the priesthood.” In his autobiography, Fr. Bill Quinlivan’s love of music is explored and credence given to a family trait of being musically gifted, and his humor attributed to his father. His songs which range from “Sunday Morning Fever” to “Paintbrush in the Green”, and an occasional parody such as Taylor Swift’s “22”, demonstrates his diverse talent to appeal to a wide audience, and his book manages to cast just as broad a net. His recent Advent Wreath Carol on YouTube was watched by over ten thousand viewers. To meet the good reverend in person Father Bill will be at Queen of Heaven Parish in West Seneca for a special event on Sat. Dec 13 at 7 pm, and will be making an appearance at the Buffalo Irish Center on Sun, Nov 30 from 4-6 pm for a book signing for his autobiography. Explore Buffalo, a nonprofit organization providing tours and other opportunities where guests can discover Buffalo’s great architecture, history and neighborhoods, has added several popular tours to take place during Thanksgiving weekend. If you have family visiting for Thanksgiving, take them on a tour and show them the best of Buffalo’s architecture and history — and to see all of the new development that is transforming the city. As an added bonus, a two-hour
South Buffalo Courier /Friday, November 28, 2014
Explore Buffalo offering tours walking tour is also a great way to work off some of those calories from Thanksgiving dinner. “Silo City Grounded” will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Nov. 29. Meet at Silo City, 120 Childs St., Buffalo. At ground level, experience the monumental scale of the grain elevators constructed in Buffalo in the first half of the 20th century, and also see how they are now being repurposed. On this guided walk around the grounds of Silo City you will enter the
ground floor work areas of a flour mill, two grain elevators and a malthouse. You will also see new projects, including “Elevator B” and Silo City Rocks. Tickets are $15, $5 with valid student ID. “Lockport Holiday Tour of Homes” will be held from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29. A boomtown during the Erie Canal days, Lockport has many magnificent mansions built by its leading citizens in the 1800s. Stroll through some of these historic homes as part of the Light Up Lock-
port holiday kickoff festivities on Saturday, Nov. 29. Tickets are $25 and can be picked up on the day of the tour at the Kenan Center, 433 Locust St., be-tween 2 and 6 p.m., and will be your passport to guide you to the wonderful homes on the tour. A limited number of tickets are available. End your day at the Lockport Palace Theatre for a tour of the theater and some hot chocolate and cookies between 4 and 6 p.m. At 6 p.m., head outside to enjoy the holiday parade and tree-lighting
before returning to the Lockport Palace Theatre for a free showing of “The Polar Express” at 7 p.m. Online reservations can be made through Lockport Palace Theatre’s website or in person at the Lockport Palace Theatre box office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday, or at Mills Jewelers, 53 Main St., Lockport. “Silo City Vertical“ will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30. Meet at Silo City, 120 Childs St., Buffalo. This tour is an expe-
rience unlike any other tour in the world. Silo City: Vertical will take you to the top of the American and Perot complexes. Approximately 2.5 hours in length, you will experience all of the history and mechanics of the grain elevator, as well as the malt production process in the Perot malthouse on this in-depth tour. A look at some of the regenerative projects ongoing at Silo City is also included. The tour will proceed rain or shine. Tickets are $35, students $30 with valid student ID. Please note that reservations are required for this tour and space is limited. Please wear comfortable walking shoes. Also note that Silo City: Vertical is not recommended for those with a fear of heights. Participants on this tour must be physically able to go up approximately 100 feet (10 stories) of stairs and a short interior ladder to reach the top — and then come back down. The elevators have been out of commission for years, so stairs are the only way to go. This tour date does not include lunch at Silo City at the conclusion of the tour. Check out Gene McCarthy’s or the Swannie House for lunch after the tour. “Hidden Gems of the Delaware District” will take place from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 30. The streets surrounding Delaware Avenue were and are highly desirable places to live. Take a walk around the block to discover stories of the Goodyear family compound, lux-ury apartment buildings, and homes on Linwood Avenue, Summer Street and Oakland Place. Meet at Coffee Culture, 448 Elmwood Ave., Buffalo. Tickets are $15, $5 with valid student ID. Visit Explore Buffalo at www.explorebuffalo.org for information or online reservations, or call 245-3032 or email explore@explorebuffalo.org.

Local sports Mount Mercy, Springville to give back in a big way By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR
When Mount Mercy Academy and SpringvilleGriffith Institute take the court at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at Mount Mercy Academy, they will be doing so with a purpose. For the third year in a row, and for the second time between Springville and Mercy, the game will be played as part of the Mercy Heroes basketball game. The game is part of an initiative that Mount Mercy started three years ago to help bring awareness to the Wounded Warrior Project. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Wounded Warrior Project. The purpose of the Wounded Warrior Project is to raise awareness and to enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members; to help injured servicemen and women aid and assist each other; and to provide unique and direct programs and services to meet their needs. Last year, on a snowy January day, the schools raised more than $2,500 for WWP. In the first two years of the event, more than $4,500 has been raised. “It is an amazing event,” stated Mount Mercy Academy coach John Glose. “I think a good thing we can teach these girls is service to others.” The communities of South Buffalo and Springville have helped in a big way, as well. Despite a snow storm that hit South Buffalo during the morning of the game last year, the tiny gym on Red Jacket

Mount Mercy and Springville participated in the Mercy Heroes game last year, too. \Proceeds directly benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. was packed with Springville and Mount Mercy supporters. “Giving back to their community,” said Glose, when asked what his team would get out it. “This is a great way for these girls to do. And I am really excited to be able to do it again.” This year, AT&T, Wegmans and a host of others are stepping up to make the event event more enjoyable than in years past. AT&T is the official sponsor of the event, while Wegmans will donate the water and sports drinks to be sold during the game. This is the second year in a row that Wegmans has come through for teams, community and the Wounded Warrior Project. “People are really stepping up and helping out, and it’s huge,” stated Glose.
“We can’t do it without them. It’s the entire community getting involved. The schools getting involved. It’s these kids getting involved. That’s what makes it great. Everybody chipping in and helping out.” For Mount Mercy guard Emily Sheehan, this is her third Mercy Heroes basketball game. She took part in the first one her sophomore year, when the Magic took on Buffalo Seminary. With family that served in the military, this even means a little bit more than whether or not you win or lose. It’s about raising awareness for those who fight and defend this country. “It has been a great experience so far,” stated Sheehan. “We all come together and work together
to give back to the community and for the soldiers that have, and are, fighting for us. When you think of Wounded Warrior, you think of people that risk their lives for us, and have gotten hurt because of it.” The 2014 Mercy Heroes basketball game will be held Saturday, Dec. 6 at Mount Mercy Academy, 88 Red Jacket, Buffalo, NY. 14220. Junior varsity will start at 1:30 p.m. followed by varsity at 3 p.m. Admission is $5, with all proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project. There will be a 50/50 drawing, raffles and other great prizes the day of the games. For more information, contact Community Papers of WNY Managing Editor Matthew Ondesko at mondesko@cpowny.com or at 668-5223, ext. 8007.

While many residents have visited the Buffalo Adore Gift Shop at 391Abbott Road since their opening two years ago, some may not be aware that the Buffalo Adore owners have branched out to give you another venue to shop at this holiday season. Buffalo Adore is now also at the Market Arcade, 617 Main Street, as part of the “Queen City PopUp: Holiday Edition”. Launched as a way to promote shopping in the downtown area this holiday season, Buffalo Adore is bringing all of their great artist wares to a new area of Buffalo and are hoping that people will venture out on their lunch hours and during their visits to the downtown area to see what Buffalo Adore has in store. In addition, the Market Arcade will feature other short term vendors including Rust Belt Love, Azariah’s Innocence, Preferred Werk and Uniquely You, offering a great selection of gift items from artisan jewelry to terrariums. “We will be open for 52 straight days, including weekends,” stated Eric Dacey, who owns Buffalo Adore with his wife Andrea, “On Small

Snow Globes that are sure to be a holiday decorating classic. The detail in the snow globes of Buffalo City Hall and the Botanical Gardens captures the essence of the beautiful architecture in our area. “One of our newer items is a handmade hockey table made from upcycled hockey sticks,” explained Dacey, “The top is etched glass and the legs are made from actual hockey sticks. As soon as we put the item on our website we received a call from a company in Illinois that is involved with manufacturing hockey items. They ordered a table for their office, and will likely order more.” More than seventy local
artists’ designs, and oneof-a-kind merchandise are available at Buffalo Adore’s 391 Abbott Rd location, and over fifty of the artists are featured in the Market Arcade location on Main Street. The unique gifts range from Buffalo specific signs to individualized teapots and stemware. The Buffalo Adore Market Arcade Pop-Up location is open 10am – 6 pm Mon – Sat, and 12 – 5pm on Sun, with evening hours during events at Shea’s Performing Arts and the Irish Classical Theatre.
