Spot ‘Baby Sampson’ billboards for your chance to win The Buffalo Zoo announced on Dec. 15, the name of a baby giraffe who was born in October. His name is Sampson. Sampson was born on Friday, Oct. 24, to mother, 5-year-old A.J, and father, 3-year-old Moke. Both are first time parents. The day was a special one for giraffe keeper, Vicki Hodge. Oct. 24 is her grandparents’ wedding anniversary, and also the anniversary of the death of her grandfather, whose middle name was Sampson. She named the baby in memory of him.
The name announcement coincides with a series of billboards that were unveiled around the Buffalo area the same day, revealing Sampson’s name to the community. Community Papers of WNY, LLC and LAMAR Outdoor Advertising provided the billboards, “A New Baby, A New Year”. CPOWNY will roll out a year of family-friendly activities and promotions on and off Zoo grounds throughout 2015.

Homeless memorial and candlelight vigil set A memorial service remembering Western New York’s homeless who have passed away during 2014 will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at the Lt. Colonel Matt Urban HOPE Center, 385 Paderewski Dr., Buffalo. Presented by the WNY Coalition for the Homeless, the event is purposefully scheduled on the first day of winter, the longest day of the year, to bring greater attention to the plight of the homeless. The event, free and open to the public, will feature guest speakers, music by the Buffalo City Mission Choir, a performance by Harvey Brice and a candlelight vigil, followed by refreshments. Information about local resources for the homeless will also be available during the event. This year, the coalition is encouraging members of the community to join in honoring the lives of those who have passed on — sons, daughters, sisters, brothers, mothers, fathers and friends — and calling for an end to homelessness in Buffalo. Homelessness is a community problem, so it is important that Western New Yorkers come together as a community to address it. The WNY Coalition for the Homeless is an association of service providers and concerned individuals who have joined together to empower and advocate for people in need of safe, affordable, and permanent housing and related services.

Four score, one year ago this month the lawmakers of this land repealed Prohibition – and this country celebrated. On the 81st anniversary of the Repeal of Prohibition on Dec 5 the Hydraulic Hearth, Larkinville’s newest restaurant and beer garden at 716 Swan St, held a Prohibition Repeal Day celebration to commemorate the day,
Owner Harry Zemsky is joined by the great wait staff at Hydraulic Hearth complete with flapper waitresses, prohibitionera cocktails and a few fedoras. “This is the biggest crowd we have had to date,” stated owner Harry Zemsky, of the newly opened Hydraulic Hearth, “Everything is going great so far. We have a fantastic, hard-working staff and they really make a difference.” It was only fitting and proper that Buffalo’s largest Prohibition Repeal party took place in the heart of Larkinville. During the early-1930’s prohibition era more than 10,000 cases of imported whiskey and gin were housed in the Larkin Terminal Warehouse which stood just yards from
the present day Hydraulic Hearth. At the end of Prohibition the cases were ready and waiting to be distributed to area restaurants and lounges. It is said that as Prohibition was repealed by the 21st amendment, President Franklin D Roosevelt announced “What this country needs is a drink,” and the Larkin Terminal Warehouse went to work delivering their wares. The Larkin area continues to deliver. The Prohibition Repeal anniversary celebration began as a ceremonial barrel procession was led from the Live at Larkin Robot Holiday party, which closed out the season for
Larkin Square, across the street to the Hydraulic Hearth, leading to a night of 1930’s style merriment. So, what’s next for the Hydraulic Hearth celebrations? “We will be holding a Seinfeld Festivus party on Dec 23,” stated Zemsky, “There will be a Seinfeld trivia contest followed by the Festivus party.” While you are brushing up on your Seinfeld trivia you may want to join the Hearth for their “Bagels and Booze” brunch, happening each Saturday from 11am to 3 pm. Enjoy signature bagel sandwiches cooked in a brick oven from the Breadhive Cooperative Bakery along with mimosas, bloody Mary’s or try a beermosa or one of their other unique drink options. Gone are the speakeasies, bootleggers and moonshine runners that once roamed the area. Today you can enjoy a great signature cocktail with a brick oven pizza in the warmth of the Hydraulic Hearth, 716 Swan Street, and check out their telephone booth artist podcasts, event nights, daily specials and all the other happenings at Larkin’s newest hotspot.

South Buffalo celebrates Christmas with Santa By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT
Horse-drawn carriages drove holiday revelers though the tree lined Cazenovia Park. Local musical choruses and musicians lifted holiday music into the air and Santa Claus arrived via firetruck for the traditional South Buffalo Christmas in the Park celebration on Dec 6. Co-sponsored by South Buffalo Alive and South Buffalo Chamber of Commerce, along with South District Councilman Christopher Scanlon, the South Buffalo Christmas in the Park has grown in size and popularity each year and this year was no exception. Hundreds of children attended this year’s event, each of them receiving gifts for spending a few minutes with the big guy in red. In addition, families were entertained by the South Buffalo School of Music and Mount Mercy Academy’s Pure Magic Choir, and a number of other musical acts including South Buffalo’s own Desiree Desiderio who performed a beautiful rendition of “Oh Holy Night”. Senator Tim Kennedy stopped by the party with wife Katie and his two younger children Padraic and Eireann. Eireann Kennedy, age 6, performed on the piano with the South Buffalo School of Music. “I think it’s a great event,” stated Julie Campbell, who attended the event with her two sons, “Its fun for the kids as well as the whole family.” The St. Teresa’s Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts from various areas in Buffalo, volunteers from the Baker Victory WAY Program, Baker Victory Dental Services and South Park High School students, along with many others donated
Aiden and Joshua let Santa Claus in on their secret Christmas wish. their time at the event. Held each year at Tosh Collins Community Center and throughout Cazenovia Park, the community celebration, the first Saturday in December each year, entertains families with a number of activities and welcomes them to join in the singing of Christmas carols, sitting on Santa’s knee, crafts, and enjoying pizza and other snacks with friends and family. Fran Desiderio, Chairperson of the event, gave credit for the success of this year’s event to her many volunteers and countless donating entities, noting that the function is made possible each year because of those that donate their time, talents, funds, food and gift donations, including dozens of community groups and local businesses. It’s not just businesses and groups. Iindividuals such as Ed Williams of South Buffalo, who want to see the traditional Christmas party
continue, donate funds to make the event possible. Added to this year’s event was a collection of food items for the South Buffalo Community Table, adding a bit of holiday giving to the evening. Residents that brought in a food bank donation were entered to win a Tops Market gift card. While this year’s community Christmas party is over for another year, you can bet it will be back again next Christmas season, just like Jolly Ol’ Nick himself. Food donations can still be made to the South Buffalo Community Table directly at their venue at 187 Southside Pkwy. While this is the last large event of the year for South Buffalo Alive, you can still show your South Buffalo Alive pride by purchasing one of their embroidered baseball caps, made possible by Burkey’s Sportswear. Local insurance agency branches out ByDebra Kelly
COURIER CORRESPONDENT
For most people, insurance is a necessary evil. It's something that you buy and never think about again, until you have to pay for it. But for Mike Shady, it's way more than that. For Shady, insurance is a way for him to help people sleep at night. His entire life, he's had a drive to help people, and he's found a way to do just that by helping them protect the fruits of their lifelong labors, to make sure that in case there's an emergency or an accident, they're protected. “My job is to make sure people are protected, and I promise everyone I work with the highest standards,” Shady says. “We align your protection with what you have in life and what matters most to you.” Shady recently came to the Lelonek Agency, and while long-time customers might know the hometown agency as mainly dealing
with personal properties and insurances, Shady is bringing with him more than 20 new insurance providers that he's licensed to work with as well as the capability to review and insure anything from home to business and commercial properties, no matter how big or how small. He's making Lelonek Agency a full-service agency now, one that can handle anything that any customer could need. A Cheektowaga resident for more than 35 years, Shady has long been active in the community from organizing charity golf tournaments to working in the store down the street. His family has a long history of owning businesses throughout the area, from ice cream stores and pizzerias to convenience stores. All that has given him real-world life experience that can't be learned out of a book, and that's what allows him to connect with his customers today. Shady credits his father with instilling his values and his work ethic into
him from a young age. “He came to this country with $9 in his pocket and not speaking a word of English,” says Shady. “He worked hard, and taught me to do the same. Ever since I was 5 or 6, I would be going to the store and working alongside him. He taught me how to run a business, be a merchant, and he taught me how important my customers are.” Today, that means Shady has become the perfect person to sit down and talk to about insurance. It's more than a necessary evil, it's a way to protect everything you've worked your whole life for. It's about more than just finding the cheapest coverage, it's about finding the right coverage. And after 16 years in the business, Shady has seen it all. “I've been all over the place,” he says. “I've learned about life from the bottom up, I've learned how to build bridges and I've learned how to fall down and get up again. How my parents raised us made us the people we are

today, and I'm glad to be in a position where I can listen to people and help people.” Circumstances in life change, and Shady knows just how important it is to stay on top of things. A policy that might have been a good fit a year ago might be leaving some gaping holes today, and that's why it's just as important to have an agent that can review your policies, suggest what you might need, and point out the holes that might not be covered. It just takes one accident to lose everything, and it's preventing that that's become the most important thing to Shady. For him, all the long hours are worth it when he sees his 90 percent retention rate, and when he hears his customers and clients thank him for allowing them to sleep at night. ECC’s Dental Lab Tech Program earns grant Erie Community College’s Dental Lab Technology Program has been selected as a recipient for a $5,000 Foundation for Dental Lab Technology’s Keystone Grant, announced in November by the foundation’s Tallahassee, Fla.-located representatives. The prestigious Keystone Grant was established to support educational institutions with dental laboratory technology programs. The annual and competitive grant selection process awards national recipients based on submitted materials that include a program outline, current efforts being made to strengthen the program and planned usage of the funds. For ECC—a school that also boasts competitive programs in dental assisting and dental hygiene, and consistently posts impressive job placement numbers across Western New York—the award will certainly strengthen an already solid dental focus.
“This award is appreciated, and further recognition of the great work done by our faculty,” ECC President Jack Quinn said. “Their number one goal is to train our students for sustainable careers, and this grant will certainly help those in dental lab tech do so.” ECC’s Dental Laboratory Technology Program trains students to be capable of the design, fabrication and production of dental prostheses, including full and partial dentures, crowns, bridges and orthodontic appliances. New state-of-the-art techniques, equipment and materials are emphasized, and within well-equipped laboratories at the ECC South Campus, students are instructed in all aspects of prosthodontic dentistry. Opportunities are available for secondyear students to work with dentists in private practice, at hospitals and at commercial dental laboratories as they prepare to join the profession.

Catholic Education Partners of South Buffalo is formed By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT
The Catholic education system makes up a large part of our South Buffalo community. From the grade school uniforms you see treking to school early morning to the internships available to Mount Mercy Academy and Bishop Timon students at Catholic Health’s Mercy Hospital, and the students of all ages that attend Trocaire College, this religious based group provides education and employment for a great many in our area. With Catholic education being such an integral part of our community, the recent closings of catholic education and healthcare institutions was met with much concern by many area residents. Where concern begets action, a group was formed in response to the strong community vocalization of the closings and recently the Catholic Education Partners of South Buffalo [CEPSB] was founded. CEPSB is the first known partnership of its kind in the
area. Its partners include represenatives from Notre Dame Academy, Mount Mercy Academy, Bishop Timon-St. Jude, Trocaire College and Mercy Hospital of Buffalo. “This is a unique privatepublic partnership whose focus is to increase student enrollment at member schools by promoting South Buffalo as a community where students can obtain a second to none Catholic education from pre-school through college and have natural career opportunities,” said Thomas Sullivan, Principal at Bishop Timon-Saint Jude. “We want the larger community to know that Catholic education is alive and well in South Buffalo and the doors of our schools and to our community are open to all children and their families.” Catholic Education Partners of South Buffalo strive to enhance the reputation and increase student enrollment at CEPSB schools by promoting the benefits of a Catholic education, the excellence of its member institutions and the quality of life in the South Buffalo community.

A recent visit to Notre Dame Academy found students thoroughly engrossed in their studies. Students were formed in groups and working productively on a weather report project where each child was responsible for a portion of the research behind the science based assignment. They then worked together to enhance their weather report, named themselves as a fictional news team, and delivered a detailed news-worthy presentation combining the science and communications proponents of their project – and this detailed project was completed by the second grade class at Notre Dame. Cindy Zaklikowski is an eighth grade teacher at Notre Dame Academy. Although this is only her second year
at the school, she loves it and feels at home after more than a decade of teaching. “Teaching here is a great experience,” stated Zaklikowski, “It’s not just about academics. Our students are very well rounded.” The curriculum at the schools has recently been enhanced by the addition of a new STEAM program – an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics – that is now offered at area Catholic schools. The program, made possible by funding from the Oishei Foundation through the foundation’s dedication to supporting education, seeks to integrate hands-on experiences in technology and engineering to the already available programs and curriculum.
Students are working on laptops at an earlier age; an engineering CAD program is now available at Bishop Timon; and students at both Timon and Mount Mercy Academy can participate in the Health Care Career Club that offers internships at Mercy Hospital in the field of research, medical, human resources, marketing, legal or communications. Many people in the area including Mount Mercy Academy President Sister Mary Ellen Twist, believe that South Buffalo’s community assets and quality of life make it an ideal place to live for young families, and providing a high-level Catholic educaiton alternative is integral to the area’s continued success.

Did you miss the Oct. 23 Solar Eclipse? Penn Dixie astronomers Rich Switzer and Ernie Jacobs, along with several other astronomy buffs, gathered at Hoak’s Restaurant on Rt. 5 in Hamburg to view the eclipse before sunset. Switzer took some excellent photos and they are posted on the Penn Dixie website at www.penndixie.org. Colleen Young, from SUNY Buffalo State, visited Penn Dixie in September and made a YouTube program – “Penn Dixie – Colly in the Community.” Jeff Dietz scheduled the program and coordinated it with help from Jess Martin, Jonathan Hoag and Dr. Bob Corretore. If you have not seen this video, the link for this video is on the Penn Dixie website. This is a very interesting an informative program and explains what Penn Dixie is about. The reprinted Amadeus W. Grabau “Geology and Palaeontology of Eighteen Mile Creek” publication has arrived and is available for purchase. The book is selling for $34.95, plus $3.06 in New York State sales tax and $5 shipping and handling. This classic publication may be purchased for $38, with sales tax included. The shipping and handling costs are $5 in the U.S. and the order form is available on the Penn Dixie website. This is a great birthday and holiday gift. The Geological Society of America Special Paper 474, June 2011, “Geobiological opportunities to learn at U.S. Fossil Parks” by Renee Clary, of Mississippi State University, and James Wandersee, of Louisiana State University, evaluated seven fossil parks and the Penn Dixie Paleontological and Outdoor Education Center was ranked No. 1.

ECC unveils Fallen Heroes Memorial Park In honor of the week of Veterans Day, Erie Community College gathered with local veterans, police and fire departments, and community members to proudly unveil its first responder-focused Fallen Heroes Memorial Park— dedicated to students who’ve lost their lives in the line of police, fire or military duty— on Thursday, November 13 outside ECC’s North Campus Law Enforcement Training Academy. “This park stands as a tribute to those ECC alums that made the ultimate sacrifice,” said ECC President Jack Quinn. “It will now be a place for others to remember and honor to their sacrifice for decades to come.” The park—aided by donations from such local Western New York companies as Campobello Construction, Lakeside Sod, Love Joy Metals, Inc. and Occhino Paving; design and construction work from the college’s Architecture Technology, Construction Technology and Visual Communications students; and completion by ECC’s Maintenance and Grounds Department— features trees and flowered latticework; steel silhouettes of veterans, police officers and firefighters; six towering flag poles flying the American flag and the flags of the five branches of the Armed Services; a 500-pound memorial stone, donated by ECC’s 117th Police Basic class and relocated from a nearby police recruit assembly area; and park benches and picnic tables for those looking to come pay their respects and appreciate the sacrifices of fallen heroes. To date, 15 of ECC’s alumni have been lost to direct combat in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and two others have died while still on active duty in noncombat circumstances. Many of the

Local sports Simpson eager to earn championship in senior season
By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
Derick Simpson is expected to do a lot of things this season for Bishop Timon’s boys basketball team, but in the end, there’s only one thing the senior standout has his sights on: hoisting a championship trophy. After reaching championship games in basketball and football in 2014, Simpson and the Tigers want it all in 2015. “Man, I just want a championship,” he said after a preseason scrimmage. “I don’t care how we get it. Teamwork is key, we need everybody.” Timon’s championship hopes are certainly dependent on everyone, but
it starts with Simpson. The senior forward was a second team All-Catholic selection last season as a junior, averaging 13 points and 12 rebounds per game. “He’s one of the best athletes in all of Western New York, there’s no question about that,” Timon coach Joe Mihalics said. “On the basketball court, not many guys rebound like he does. He keeps things alive, uses his quickness to help us. He’s just a great athlete.” Simpson was a standout wide receiver on the Tigers’ football team in the fall and also a stalwart on defense at linebacker. He helped lead Timon to the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association championship game. He’s a forward in basketball, but expect to see him all over the court. With a lot of size on the roster, the Tigers have no problem using Simpson’s athleticism on the perimeter as well. “He can play all around, inside and outside,” Mihalics said. “He’ll have
the opportunity to play everywhere, he can check big and he can check some guards. We have a fairly big team for high school so we can use him all over.” Last season, the Tigers made a run to the Manhattan Cup championship game before falling short against a Cinderella run by Nichols. It’s a loss Simpson certainly has not forgotten and the Tigers again expect to be in the hunt in 2014-15. One thing is for sure. Even though Timon is one of the smaller MMAA teams, the Tigers don’t consider themselves a heavy underdog against anyone on the schedule, regardless on the size of the opposing school. That’s the kind of pride and tradition Timon has long been known for – and Simpson is certainly proud to be a part of that. “We’ll definitely compete with all the big teams,” Simpson said. “It won’t be a rollover for anybody against us, we’re fighting hard until the final buzzer.”
JEFFREY T. BARNES
Derick Simpson averaged 13 points and 12 rebounds per game as a junior last year. He’ll be leaned on heavily in the paint and on the perimter.
Notre Dame Academy sports shining recently Soccer News: Recently, the fifth grade soccer team, coached by Kristie Moore, finished the season undefeated. Leading the team with goals and assists were Nicholas Moore, Evan Coronado, Aubrey Monaco, Mary Vattes and Joshua Bentkowski. Anthony Snyder, Jonah Sherrieb, Veronica Fisher and Maria Webster played defense that made it very hard for opponents to score. Ryan Adamy, Brendan Dargavel, Brody Krombach and Natalie
Radwan made key plays to help the team throughout the season. Patrick McMahon and Alex Ventura were strong in goal. Basketball News: The third/fourth grade basketball team, coached by Dan McFarland and Jeanne Griffin, opened its season with a win over Queen of Heaven on Saturday, Dec. 6. The score was 14-4. Scoring for Notre Dame was Christian Garner, Patrick Sherrieb, Colin Oliveri, and
Trey Santana. The score was 8-4 before NDA scored six points in the fourth quarter to pull away. The fourth grade boys team, coached by Greg McOwen, won its home opener against St Mary’s of Lancaster, 17-10, to move to 2-0 this year. Greg McOwen led all scorers with eight points. Colin Scarcello, Billy Finn, Tommy Shea, Brian Klodzinski and Ben Smith all chipped in with points for NDA. The fifth and sixth grade
JV girls basketball team, coached by Jack Hoffstetter, won the consolation game at the NCCS Tournament last weekend, defeating NCCS 16-8, led by Anna Schieber’s six points, Aubrey Monaco’s four, Hannah Fredo’s three, Athena Parisi’s two, and Kate Ryan’s one. After losing in a shootout 38-28 against Fredonia on Saturday, a game in which 10 different girls scored, the girls came back with a great defensive effort on Sunday.
The fifth grade boys, coached by Kristie Moore, started the season with a thriller at St. Peter and Paul. Down most of the game, the Saints pressed and had great team play with steals, rebounds and baskets by Billy Paladino, Evan Coronado, Jonah Sherrieb, Anthony Snyder and Nicholas Moore. With 22 seconds left in the game, Moore hit a baseline swish that put the team ahead where they stayed because of their aggressive defense. The
team finished the week 2-1. The eighth grade boys, coached by Don Cuddihy and Rick Smartz, started their season with a good win against Southtowns Catholic in the St. Francis Tournament. They played NCCS next and fought hard to a five-point loss. They opened the regular season with a disappointing 26-21 loss to SSPP. However, they rebounded on Friday with an exciting 30-29 victory over OLV that was not settled until the final seconds of the game.

Local sports Cheektowaga’s softball central is focused on all softball, all the time By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
MIKE PIDANICK
Softball Central is located at 3223 Broadway St.
Even during down times in life, Kevin Hufford always had softball in his life. Back on his feet now, the Cheektowaga resident is looking to make the sport an even bigger part of his daily routine. Hufford and his wife, Melissa, launched Softball Central, located at 3223 Broadway St. in Cheektowaga, last week. The indoor facility is focused strictly on softball. Softball has kept us going for an awful long time,” Kevin Hufford said. “We’re always been doing softball anyway. They say if you do what you love, you never have to go to work. I hope to come here every day.” Hufford has always been involved in softball. He started coaching at Cheektowaga
Southside softball in 2001 and combined with his wife as well as Beth O’Brien to rebuild the Cheektowaga Crabapple travel team. He’s also been an assistant coach at Medaille College, Hutch-Tech High School and currently Erie County Community College. But his life changed on Aug. 28, 2009 when he was seriously injured after being hit by a truck while paving city streets. Unable to work and battling multiple back surgeries, Hufford also had time to dream. “The thought of being able to possibly open this thing up while we were coaching all these kids kind of kept us going,” said Hufford, who obtained a business degree after the accident. “Now we’re going to take a shot at it.” Softball Central will in-
clude two batting cages, two pitching cages and a stationary cage. There will be batting lessons, pitching lessons and a place for girls to stay sharp when the snow is falling. It’s all softball. “It’s just going to be softball,” Hufford said. “There’s plenty of places people can go and get all the baseball they want inside. We’re hoping if we just focus on softball. Hopefully we can be a little less expensive and a lot more focused and it will all work out.” Hufford said he will offer some free time at the facility to JFK, Cleveland Hill, Maryvale and Cheektowaga Central. And of course St. Mary’s of Lancaster, where his daughter Erin is a sophomore and one of the elite softball players in Western New York. A member of the
Gold Coast Hurricanes out of Florida as well as the local New Era Diamond Girls, Erin has a goal of playing collegiately for the University of Tennessee. “She’s almost more talented than we can afford her to be right now,” Kevin Hufford said with a laugh. But that’s ultimately the goal for Softball Central, to help local players grow towards big dreams. Hufford expects players from Niagara Falls to Hamburg to Clarence will be at the facility for individual lessons. Now that it’s up and running, it’s expected to grow stronger and stronger for years to come. “If it makes a dollar more than it costs, it’ll be here forever,” Hufford said. “I’ll just have to get a job. If I can make a living doing this, that would be all the better.”

For the second holiday season South Buffalo CREW, Councilmember Chris Scanlon, South Buffalo Alive and the Greater South Buffalo Chamber of Commerce presented the “Shop South Buffalo event on Dec 12 which brought friends, neighbors and business owners together for a great holiday happening with music and merriment throughout the streets, restaurants, and businesses in the area. While people bustled in and out of the shops, Santa roamed about and a trolley offered rides between businesses running from Abbott to Seneca and South Park. Many service businesses and restaurants, such as Tracy’s Retreat at 1156 Abbott and Blackthorn Restaurant at 2134 Seneca St, offered discounted gift certificates for the evening. Tifft Nature Preserve holds holiday craft event By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT
Tifft Nature Preserve continued its “Do-ItYourself” series on Dec 13 with a Nature Maker Holiday Gift event for kids – and the parents in attendance were just as interested in the craft idea as the children. “We used all recycled materials for our holiday crafts,” stated Kimberly May, Program Coordinator, “We made gift boxes, bows, and personalized magnets out of old magazines. Kids as young as 5 are making these crafts and they make great gifts.” During the children craft event the young crafters worked alongside their guardians with instruction from one of the Tifft instructors, learning how to repurpose everyday products into new items. Dollar store clear glass
beads were matched with pictures in magazines, and glued together to make great refrigerator magnets. The boxes were also made from magazine pages and the pictures selected were unique to the intended recipient, varying from wildlife flowers to animals and more. Strips of magazines were cut and twisted into bows, and shredded paper made great confetti. When done the children had a collection of personalized magnets nestled in the gift box, bowed and ready to give to a special someone – and made primarily from recycled materials. Children from throughout Western New York came to take part in the event. Cheektowaga resident Giovanni Lograsso made an animal print box while his friend Tim Ransbury made a special magnet for many family members. Carmen
Fazio worked on drawings of her favorite animals – wolves, ducks and owls. Sienna McCabe, 5, came from Elma to participate in the event. While it was her first experience with the Tifft craft program, it will not be her last. Although one of the youngest in the group, Sienna worked on her gifts with great focus – showing you are never too young to start enjoying time at Tifft. Tifft Nature Preserve has a great selection of upcoming events for kids and adults. Join them for the “Winter Solstice Walk” on Dec 20 at 6pm for a trek through the woods on the shortest night of the year. On Dec 27 at 6pm Tifft will hold a “Hot Chocolate Walk” when ages 5 and up can stretch their legs during a wintery nighttime walk and then return for hot chocolate, peppermint candy and music in the cabin. On Tuesday, Dec 30 from

Holy Family Senior Center is home and more By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT
Ann McMahon felt right at home when she stepped in to the Holy Family Senior Apartments when it first opened at the corner of S Park and Tifft three years ago. And why shouldn’t she? “I went to grade school in this building,” reminisced McMahon, about the building that was once the Holy Family Catholic School, “I was married to my husband Thomas in the church next door and I raised nine children with him just a few blocks away.” So when the time came to find a senior living place that would allow her to maintain her active lifestyle and enjoy the social interaction she was accustomed to, the Holy Family Apartments seemed perfect. The wide halls and warm ambiance with its well-known layout, amidst a familiar neighborhood and friendly residents seemed like an ideal new home. It wasn’t until after moving in that McMahon made another discovery about the center. During the conversion of the building to a senior living center, the halls of the structure were renovated with a bit of the “grade school” feel to its décor, using the classroom chalkboards intermittently throughout the halls as message boards and displaying art work from years past to capture the school-like feel. Walking outside her apartment door shortly after moving in Ann McMahon looked up and saw a familiar name signed to the bottom of a painting that was completed over 60 years earlier. “James Hinman, Grade 7” had completed a depiction of Jesus with his mother, Mary. The young artist, James Hinman, was Ann’s youngest brother who had passed away years earlier. She was shocked and delighted. After a bit
Ann McMahon [front] is joined by friends Sharon Godwin, Yvonne Kelso, and Annette Byrnes [left to right] for a Buffalo Bills game at the Holy Family Senior Apartments of investigating McMahon found that the picture was part of a school art project that was completed on the gym floor of the school in the mid 1950’s by a select group of artistic young students. The paintings were found during the renovation and it was decided that they would be used to decorate a few hallways – with the painting of a 12 yr. old James Hinman making its way strangely just a feet away from the outer door of his older sister’s new home over six decades later. Now with her brother’s painting always in view, Ann McMahon has called the Holy Family Senior Apartments her home for over three years and according to her “if they want me out they are going to have to throw me out.” There is no place she would rather be. “We all get along and we are here for each other,” stated McMahon’s friends and fellow residents Annette Byrne and Yvonne Kelso,
“You can always rely on someone helping you out if you need it.” During the recent snowstorm the residents went door to door asking what others needed and sharing supplies. Dinners were cooked by the women each evening, with everyone contributing and resulting in a buffet meal being served in the community room to the entire apartment complex each night of the storm. The nearly 40 residents at the facility range in age from 55 to mid-90s and they functioned without issue during a storm that had people half their age in a bind. More normal weeks at the Holy Family Senior Apartments are met with Sunday football games in the community room attended by the sports lovers of the complex; Tuesday lunch and bingo days at the Valley Community Center where Ann McMahon worked as the senior coordinator for
over twenty years and still enjoys her weekly visits; and parties for just about any holiday or occasion that they deem worthy to celebrate. The Holy Family Senior Apartment building also houses a Catholic Charities Food Pantry open to low income families in the community which is manned by some of the residents at the apartments. Open Mon and Thur from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm donations of nonperishable food and warm clothing such as coats, boots, hats and glove are gratefully accepted during open hours. Visit them at the corner of S Park and Tifft for further information. Ann McMahon and the other residents are active members of our community who have found that South Buffalo is not only a great area to live and work while raising a family, but it’s also the ideal place to relax in your senior years surrounded by friends, family and warm memories.

Many discoveries await at Past & Present Store and Museum Every town and village throughout Western New York seems to have a business or attraction that many consider to be a “hidden gem.” In the Village of Blasdell, that unique place just waiting to be discovered by a new generation of visitors is Past & Present Store and Museum. Conveniently located at 3767 South Park Ave., between Lake Avenue and Milestrip Road, Past & Present is one of those places that can be defined as truly having “something for everyone.” From interesting and beautiful fossils, rocks, crystals and minerals to handmade jewelry, educational toys and books, and gift items from around the globe, Past & Present is the perfect destination for discovering unique items that can be cherished for many years to come. Have someone on your holiday gift list that’s hard to shop for? Past & Present, no doubt, has an answer. And that’s just half of this unique establishment. The back portion of the building houses a freeadmission museum featuring interesting specimens from around the world. Among the many items on exhibit are life-size casts of a Tyrannosaurus Rex skull and Triceratops skull, a fossil Elephant Bird egg the size of a basketball, actual dinosaur bones and the largest amber exhibit in Western New York. The gallery also houses a ninefoot tall articulated leg from the dinosaur Edmontosaurus; and two life-size
jaw models, one with real teeth, of the ancient predatory shark Carcharodon megalodon. Other exhibits on display include fossils from New York and Southern Ontario, fossil fish, Pleistocene vertebrates, invertebrates and much more. A growing mineral collection and meteorite display are newer additions to the gallery. A family destination, Past & Present also offers in-house and outdoor programming and special events throughout the year. “We have been buying, selling and trading quality fossils since 1989,” said store-owner Glen LaPlaca, an expert who earned his degree in geoscience and once served as general curator at a public aquarium. “We do everything from desert collecting to river and coastal diving for fossils, and many of those items can now be seen and purchased at Past & Present.” Regular store and museum hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. Past & Present will also be open from noon to 5 p.m. Sundays until Christmas and will have extended hours the week before Christmas. For more information, visit www.pastpres.com. Frequent updates are also available by following Past & Present on Facebook at www.facebook. com/pastpres.
