Impress Apparel impresses shoppers

By Catherine Miller COURIERCORRESPONDENT

Art Pepe, by the very nature of his first name, tends to have a creative and artistic edge. A retired art teacher in Buffalo, Art decided that sitting idle after retirement was just not his thing and instead, partnered with a friend, Stuart Goodman, to create “Impress Apparel and Gifts”, a one-of-a-kind store offering a large selection of Buffalo inspired gift items, along with other great graphic art products. Buffalo coffee mugs, coasters, shirts, hats and key chains are just a few of the city-themed items you can find at Impress

Apparel, 313 Abbott Road at the corner of Clio. Beyond his Buffalo images and landscapes, Impress Apparel and Gifts can turn your personal photographs into anything from a clock or coaster set for your living room, to a cutting board and trivet for your kitchen. “If you can imagine it, whatever it is, chances are we can print it,” stated Art Pepe, who has printed images on slate rock, wood, glass, metal and many repurposed materials. Locally owned and operated in South Buffalo, Impress Apparel offers sweatshirts and hoodies for the colder weather, along with their many other

items, and their familiar slogan “Buffalo: We Roam All Over”. A great gift idea for the many Buffalonians who have now taken roots elsewhere or tend to regularly visit outside our region, the items are a perfect reminder that no matter how far we are away, our hearts are still in the heart of Buffalo. Impress Apparel and Gifts uses many local artists to create their items. A local artist’s watercolor rendering of the Mighty Taco building took on a new look as a set of coasters. Where else can you find such keepsakes? Impress Apparel also can screen-print your photos onto gift items for unique

holiday surprises for your loved ones. In addition they keep a great selection of Buffalo skyline and architecture printed items on hand, making great outof-town or corporate gifts. Visit Impress Apparel, 313 Abbott Road, during the “Shop South Buffalo” event on Friday, Dec. 12 to peruse their large selection of gift items celebrating our home town, and to check out their custom gift ideas. They are also available most days by appointment by calling 361-1056 or email them at apepe95@ aol.com with your customized gift ideas. There’s nothing like bringing a little bit of home back home for the holidays.

Powered Protection, Inc. attended the ninth annual “97 Rock Operation: Rock Out Hunger” event at Eastern Hills Mall on Transit Road in Clarence/Williamsville on Nov. 25. The 97 Rock Operation: Rock Out Hunger is an event held to collect perishable and non-perishable food items and monetary donations for the Food Bank of Western New York. As Buffalo’s leading security solution provider, Powered Protection, Inc. attended “97 Rock Operation: Rock Out Hunger” to donate food items to help improve the lives of those in need. As weather continues to worsen for citizens, and far too many families continue to go hungry, we believe it’s fundamental to do whatever we can to help out. Interested in donating to the Food Bank of Western New York but not sure what to bring? Here are some great ideas for you: canned meats, peanut butter and jelly, hot and cold cereals, fruits and vegetables, fresh meat/turkey. Remember, perishable and non-perishable food items are greatly appreciated. According to the American Community Survey, Buffalo is the third-poorest large city in America. Fortunately, the Food Bank of Western New York distributes food to roughly 340 member agencies throughout the region – serving almost 100,000 people; but we truly need your help to improve the lives of those in need. Interested in learning more about the 97 Rock Operation: Rock Out Hunger? Want to help out and donate to the Food Bank of Western New York? A ramp and free off-street parking are available. Explore and rediscover the winter season and holidays with the sights and sounds of classic choral music. Featuring Mendelssohn’s “Behold a star from Jacob shining,” English carols by Rutter, lush Randol Bass arrangements of traditional and contemporary holiday favorites, an audience sing-along, and even a barbershop arrangement of Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. Tickets are $10 general admission, $5 students and $15 preferred seating. Tickets are available at the door (cash or check only) or at BNChoirs.org. The Buffalo Master Chorale, led by Doreen Rao, music director, promotes local culture and global recognition through choral projects and performance collaborations that unite a diverse community of urban, rural, school, church and community choirs. Its auditioned ensemble of experienced volunteer and professional singers are united by a shared love of choral singing, whose goal is the advancement of the choral art in Western New York through performance excellence, community service, education and outreach. The BMC, together with the Buffalo Niagara Youth Chorus, comprise the Buffalo Niagara Choirs, a tax-exempt, not-for profit, multi-generational choral organization. Unique among local choral groups, the BNC provides singers with outstanding choral experiences from childhood to adult.

Configuration presents ‘Tales of Winter’ Configuration Dance Theatre and School of Ballet will be presenting their holiday production, “Tales of Winter,” at 3 p.m. on Dec. 7 at Nichols School’s Flickinger Theater. This wonderful holiday-themed, child-friendly show will take the chill out of winter and is fun for the entire family. Children will love “The Grinch,” Configuration Dance Theatre’s version of the Dr. Seuss classic, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” For the more mature members of the family, the production includes Duke Ellington’s jazzy “Nutcracker Suite,” a playful jazz-inspired version of the original Tchaikovsky score transcribed by Duke Ellington. The show is age appropriate and free to children under 5. This is a great alternative to traditional productions of “The Nutcracker” as the duration of the show is a comfortable length for the little ones. Tickets are $15 in advance, $17.50 at the door. Reserve your tickets by calling 883-4510 or 204-8192.

Shovel Brigade Mob rescues South Buffalo By Catherine Miller COURIERCORRESPONDENT

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the month of unseasonably warm days and unprecedented snow falls. It was November in Buffalo and it gave birth to a munificent group of shovel wielding citizens dubbed the “Shovel Brigade Mob”. As the weight of the nearly eight foot of snow began to take a toll on the residents of South Buffalo residing just south of the Bailey and Clinton area, a group of less snow impacted residents chose to forego their leisurely weekend activities and bear shovels and snow blowers to help their less fortunate neighbors to the south. Susan Cholewa of the Black Rock initiated the idea and contacted Laura Kelly, Executive Director of the Old First Ward Community Center regarding her concept to form a band of volunteers to help shovel out the trapped residents in the hard hit South Buffalo storm area. The event took on a life of its own as a Facebook page for the “Shovel Brigade Mob” was born and volunteers started to sign up by the hundreds through the media sharing effort. Residents throughout the West Side, Parkside area, Elmwood Village and other

The Shovel Brigade Mob tackled snow more than five-feet high throughout South Buffalo locals, including outside the city limits were caught up in the movement. “The Old First Ward Community Center made a natural staging place as we were not especially hard hit, but very close to the affected areas,” stated Laura Kelly. The idea was to meet at the center on Saturday, Nov 22 at 9am and with a driving ban still in effect, drive the volunteers to the barricade at Seneca and Bailey and have them disperse from there to various neighborhoods on foot. volunteers arrived early and cleared the ice from the walkway around the center and set up the inside area to organize groups. “We dispatched the first group before 9 am and they came back to fuel up on lunch and went right back out again,” stated Kelly, “At morning registration there was a line of volunteers throughout the building. Over 300 shovelers cleared over 400 homes. Many other people, who could not shovel, brought food, helped serve, and generally supported the

Stories of the reactions in the neighborhoods were just as endearing as the volunteerism that was shown. Teams that began as strangers became friends as they worked designated streets. Homeowners would point out neighbors that needed assistance and then run for a shovel and join the effort. A team of six became twenty by the end of the avenue.

One elderly woman met the group at her door and noting that she was fine, grabbed a shovel and threw on her coat to join in, even though it was her first chance to leave the house after four days. Dr. Yu, a local pediatrician, arrived with his wife and medical pack along with several cases of baby formula. He reported to the Fire House in South Buffalo to assist those with infant needs. One resident had been trapped in West Seneca away from her South Buffalo home for four days and needed to get home to get her asthma medication and a breathing treatment. As she walked the white trek up her street that Saturday, she was concerned with the amount of snow that she would be met with once she arrived at her house. Approaching her home she noticed the Shovel Brigade Mob hard at work on her street, and looking beyond them was a path to her door, allowing her easy access to her much needed medication. She was moved to tears. Countless others were similarly assisted by this impromptu group of good-fellows. The Shovel Brigade Mob was not the only group that assisted in the storm’s aftermath. Neighbors joined together to help out older

seniors and people that could not get out of their homes. South Buffalo Councilman Chris Scanlon and friends were found shoveling driveways, paths to doors and roofs and bringing food and prescriptions to residents. And while there was not nearly the amount of teenagers taking advantage of the shoveling opportunities as was recalled in the Blizzard of ’77, the teens from that “77 generation were out in full force again shoveling out street paths and proved that they weren’t too old to take on the challenges of this storm. There were many that made the organizing and execution of the Shovel Brigade Mob event possible. People such as Whitney Kemp, Susan Cholewa, Debra Simonick, Molly Heidinger, Dee Dee Heidinger, Kate Heidinger and Sara Heidinger helped to match shovelers and drivers, get people to the drop zone, oversaw registration, and answered phones and recorded requests for help. While the event would not have been possible without their organization and assistance the greatest thanks goes to the hundreds of Western New Yorkers who chose to help their fellow Buffalonians, now known as the “Shovel Brigade Mob.”

Old First Ward and NHS apply for joint funding By Catherine Miller COURIERCORRESPONDENT

Two local nonprofit organizations are collaborating in a joint effort to apply for funding under the “Better Buffalo Fund” opportunity through the NYS Empire State Development Fund. The Neighborhood Housing Services of South Buffalo (NHS) and the Old First Ward Community Association (OFWCA) will apply for eligible areas of the Seneca Street and South Park Avenue commercial

corridors under the ”Main Street Initiative” portion of the fund. The Buffalo Main Streets Initiative is a program modeled on the New York State Main Street program and will assist in the revitalization of historic business districts and mixed-use neighborhood commercial districts. The program considers grant requests ranging from $50,000 to $500,000 from non-profit and neighborhood business associations in the City of Buffalo. The intent is to encourage new business and fill vacancies in the area. “These areas need revitalization and this fund is a step in that direction,” Fisher continued, “Some of these buildings are over 100 years old and can benefit from energy efficient upgrades with new windows and roofs and other improvements.” While the funding is in the application stage and not guaranteed, both OFWCA and NHS are encouraging businesses interested in receiving a portion of the funding to notify their organizations of its interest and needs so that the business can be considered, should the funding be approved.

The Seneca Cazenovia area is one of the regions proposed in the Better Buffalo Fund application that would assist in revitalizing this historic area.

Dunkin’ Donuts donates $25,000 to support relief efforts in WNY

Dunkin’ Donuts today announced a $25,000 donation to the American Red Cross to support disaster relief efforts and those who have been impacted by disasters including the recent snowstorm in Western New York. “As those affected continue to feel the impact of the recent snowstorm, our goal is that the company’s donation to the American Red Cross will help provide assistance to the people who have been displaced by the storm,” said Tammy Monks, senior field marketing manager for Dunkin’ Donuts. Dunkin’ Donuts has 47 restaurants in the Buffalo market, and has forged a successful partnership with the American Red Cross over the past seven years through the “Give a Pint, Get a Pound” campaign, which has helped increase blood donations by providing a coupon for a free pound of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee to all presenting donors at Red Cross blood drives during the month of January. The campaign has achieved great success during the past seven years as Dunkin’ Donuts has provided more than 520,000 pounds of coffee to presenting donors, and if one

donation may help save up to three lives, Dunkin Donuts has potentially helped more than 1.5 million patients. Locally, approximately 40,000 pints of blood have been collected in Buffalo during the month of January since the inception of the program in 2008. “The Red Cross is grateful to Dunkin’ Donuts for their ongoing partnership and for this recent donation to help those who have been impacted by disasters such as the recent snowstorm,” said Chuck Marra, executive director of the American Red Cross, Western New York Chapter. “This generosity is reflective of Dunkin’ Donuts’ commitment to the communities they serve, and we are appreciative of their ongoing dedication to our lifesaving mission.” To make a donation to the American Red Cross, visit redcross.org or call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767). Be prepared and stay safe during winter driving months Every start to the winter season, you promise yourself that this year will be different, that you’ll be ready for whatever blizzard Mother Nature sends us. We all know that winter driving can be a test for even expert drivers and you need to be prepared at all times. Before the storm hits, take a moment to review a few simple winter driving tips and doublecheck that you have the proper emergency gear in your vehicle to ensure your safety. Not all drivers are prepared for winter driving conditions, so take it slow when driving on snowy or icy roadways. Drive as the environment warrants, stay alert and reduce your speed. Due to poor visibility and/or bad road conditions, always leave plenty of room between cars. Brake early and slowly giving yourself time to stop and react safely. Keep a full tank of gas along with gas in your vehicle at all times. Before pulling onto the road, be sure to completely clear snow and ice from your car windows, mirrors, lights, hood and roof. Don’t use cruise control in inclement weather as the slightest touch of your brakes to deactivate can cause loss of vehicle control. Take extra precaution when entering and exiting ramps

and bridges as they can be extremely slippery. While fourwheel drive vehicles may help you get going quicker, they won’t help you stop any quicker – don’t get overconfident when driving one. Make sure your car is properly maintained – the better shape your car is in, the safer you are on the road. Have your battery and ignition system checked, along with your brakes, transmission and tires. All fluids in your vehicle should be checked and topped off: de-icing washer fluid, oil, power steering and anti-freeze. Change or adjust spark plugs, air, fuel and emission filters. Check your headlights, brake and taillights, blinkers and emergency flashers. If you ever get stuck in the winter season, be prepared by keeping these emergency items handy in your vehicle: a spare tire, wheel wrench, jack, shovel, jumper cables, tow and tire chains, salt or cat litter, working flashlight with extra batteries, bright cloth, first aid kit, ice scraper and snow brush. Extra clothing such as gloves, socks and hats, a blanket, a 12-volt charger for a cell phone, as well as non-perishable foods and bottles of water or juice are vital should you become stranded.

When Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School enters the 2014-15 Western New York Varsity Hockey Federation season, it will do so without much of its firepower. The Tigers were hit hard by graduation, losing 14 players, including leading scorer Connor Fields — who tallied 46 goals — and their top six forwards from a years ago. “It’s going to be tough to compensate for that loss,” stated Bishop Timon-St. Jude coach Gene Overdorf after their 8-0 win over Lockport during the recent Nichols Thanksgiving Showcase. “We pretty much have an entire junior team. We will be young, but it bodes well for the future.” The future of this team will settle around goaltender Tom Parshall. Parshall was solid between the pipes last season as the Tigers made it to their secondstraight Catholic final, losing to St. Joe’s. If the Tigers are to make a deep run in the playoffs again, it will be Parshall that will be looked upon to carry the load. “I think Tom will have to be big for us this year,” Overdorf said. “I know he will be. But we are counting on Tommy to keep us in every game. 2014-15 Hockey Preview Monsignor Martin girls hockey eyes another season of success, returns plenty of talent By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

The Monsignor Martin girls hockey team has seen plenty of success on the ice and many of the big names are back. But past success doesn’t guarantee future playing time. With a deep roster, MMAA players know they have to earn each minute and they’re eager to do so. 2014-15 Fed Schedule Nov. 26 vs. Amherst/Sweet Home Won 2-0 Dec. 10 vs. Lancaster/Iroquois 4 p.m. at East Aurora Dec. 11 vs. Kenmore 4:30 p.m. at North Buffalo Dec. 18 vs. Lancaster/Iroquois 4:30 p.m. at North Buffalo Jan. 6 vs. Kenmore 8:15 p.m. at Lincoln Jan. 8 vs. W. “I have a group of kids that work hard,” coach Linda Mroz said “Nobody feels entitled to PT. Doesn’t matter if you’re a senior or a freshman, every game and every practice is a tryout, no lineup is set.” Monsignor Martin has a ton of returning talent and leadership. Senior defender Amelia Gajewski (Sacred Heart Academy) is the team captain. She’s back to lead the blue-line in her fourth varsity season. Catherine Radwan (Mount Mercy) will serve as alternate captain in her junior season and again be all over the ice for MMAA. Her coach described Radwan as “a bull in a China shop.” “She’s just one of those kids that gives you 110 percent every time,” Mroz said. “I can count on her to do play penalty kill, power play, anything. If I tell her, ‘I need your fanny in front of the net, that’s where she’ll be.’” Kaitlin Drew-Mead (Sacred Heart) led the league in goals as a freshman and is expected to do even more as a sophomore. With the talented Rachel Lenard lost to graduation, Drew-Mead will be a target this season. “We’ve adjusted her role,” Mroz said. “I told her, ‘You need to step up and she said ‘I’m ready for the challenge, coach. I’m glad you put me here.’” The team also welcomes back junior Brynn Wopperer (Sacred Heart), who scored a goal in her first game this season after missing last year. Also on defense, junior Maeve Christ (Mount St. Mary) is one of the top

Sure, it’s Catherine Radwan a third goaltender in Julianna nice to win, but that’s not Kaitlin Drew-Mead really what I’m all about. Kersten (Sacred Heart). All Brynn Wopperer three girls are sophomores. Would it be nice to win the Maeve Christ championship and get it Kayla Blos MMA’s roster consist of back? Of course, but it’s not Brianna Gawronski nine players from Mount really necessary as long as I Makenna Walp Mercy, eight from Sacred can help these girls move on to the next level.” Julianna Kersten Heat, two from Nardin and

they’re friends when they step on the ice. “Mount St. Mary and Sacred Heart have a huge rivalry,” Mroz said “But I tell the girls, you’re no longer Mount and you are no longer Sacred Heart, you’re Monsignor Martin. There are no issues. They’re not playing for Caz, not playing for the Regals, not playing for the Stars, or Sacred Heart or Mount or Nardin. We’re all playing together for Monsignor Martin and the girls have been great about it.”

Hoppy helped Buff State to first postseason berth since 2000 By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Growing up in the shadows of Ralph Wilson Stadium, Kyle Hoppy learned what it takes to conduct the comeback drive. Six years after he seemingly hung up his shoulder pads, Hoppy is doing just that at Buffalo State. Hoppy, the quarterback of Orchard Park High School’s 2008 state championship team, led the Bengals this year to their first eight-win season since 1998 and their first postseason appearance since 2000. Buffalo State finished the season at 8-3 with a lopsided victory in the ECAC Southwest Bowl, during which Hoppy had the best game of his career so far, passing for 335 yards and five touchdowns, tying the school record. Better yet for the Bengals, the 23-year-old business major still has two years of eligibility left. After being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2009, Hoppy turned down a scholarship offer from Bucknell University to pursue a professional baseball career. He toiled in the minors for four years before reaching out to his former Orchard Park teammate and current Buffalo State assistant coach, Garret McLaughlin, about restarting his

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Buffalo State QB and Orchard Park native Kyle Hoppy. football career. Hoppy backed up another state champion quarterback, Casey Kacz (Sweet Home), last season, and won the starting job this year. Senior wide receiver Mike Doherty (Kenmore East) said the Bengals expected their first-year starter would pick up right where the most prolific quarterback in school history left off. “I knew Kyle was going to be good, because he was a state champion in high school and a playmaker,”

said Doherty, who graduated high school the same year as Hoppy. Hoppy showed a bit of rust after the long hiatus from playing quarterback. He was benched in the second half twice and briefly lost his starting job. But by the end of the season, Hoppy had put together two straight standout performances, and coach Jerry Boyes believes Hoppy could establish himself as the top passer in school history over the next two years.

“He has the skillset to do that,” Boyes said. “The potential is all right there. Now it’s just continuing to grow, from the mental aspect of the game.” Boyes said Hoppy made great strides toward the end of the season in reading defenses and calling plays at the line of scrimmage, a key element of the Bengals offense. Hoppy finished the season with a 54.1 percent completion rate, 2,258 yards and 22 touchdowns, one shy of the school record. He ranked first in

the nation with 18.2 yards per completion and his 9.9 yards per attempt were the best in the Empire 8 conference. His 161.7 efficiency rating ranked second in the conference and 18th nationally. He also rushed for 302 yards and five touchdowns, putting him in the top 50 nationally in points accounted for. “This was a great year,” Hoppy said. “I really came into my own after not playing organized football for five years and backing up Casey last year. “I’ve always loved the sport of football. I gave it a shot at baseball and it didn’t work out, but now I’m giving it another shot here in football and I’m loving it. Being here right now, it’s a great time to be here. I feel like I’m in a great place.” Buffalo State fell one win short of its ultimate goal of qualifying for the NCAA playoffs, but established a baseline of success by being selected for, and winning, one of the seven ECAC bowl games. “Coach Boyes always talks about making noise and this year we made noise in our conference and made noise nationally,” Hoppy said. “Now we need to keep making that noise and keep striving toward that ultimate goal of getting to the NCAA tournament and

winning some games.” The Bengals put 11 players on the all-conference teams this year, and not one of them was Hoppy. Linebacker Marquis Artis (Amherst), who was named Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Year. Doherty, the program’s all-time leading receiver, second all-time leading rusher Rich Pete, offensive lineman Brandon Lathrop (Kenmore West), linebacker Mitch Thomas (Sweet Home), linebacker Shaq Frederick, and kicker Marc Montana (St. Joe’s) were also first-team selections. Wide receiver Ryan Carney (Olean), defensive end Dez Howard (St. Francis), defensive tackle Anthony Sanders (McKinley), and cornerback Sherman Nelson made the second-team. Hoppy won’t have Pete to hand off to or Doherty at his disposal next season, but Carney, who set a school record with 12 touchdown catches, has another year left, and Boyes believes he has built the Bengals into a program that can withstand graduation losses. “If you’re doing things right, the faces change, but success stays,” Boyes said. “Tradition should not graduate.” Doherty, for his part, said, “If anybody is going to lead them to the (NCAA) playoffs, it’s going to be Kyle.”
