CPOWNY and Buffalo Zoo pair up to welcome giraffe calf By Lizz Schumer THE SUN EDITOR
There is a new face at The Buffalo Zoo, and Community Papers of WNY Inc. is partnering with the Zoo to welcome its first Zooborn baby in some time: A baby giraffe. The male calf arrived in the middle of the night on Oct. 24, to first-time parents A.J, 5, and Moke, 3. Community Papers of WNY has planned a year of events and promotions, in conjunction with the Zoo, to welcome the newest addition to Western New York. A formal press release will be released by the Zoo and CPOWNY on Dec. 15, announcing the still-anony-
mous baby’s name, as well as the reasoning behind its new moniker. The newspaper group and the Zoo are working together to host a series of events and contests, to coincide with the calf’s first year of life, and CPOWNY readers will be the first to know, and participate in, these promotions. Baby giraffes tend to remain with their parents until they are around about 22 months old, so the organization has plenty of time to spend with the new little one. Special events will include a coloring contest, in which children in grades K-4 color a drawing of the baby giraffe and mother from a drawing template included in all communi-
ty papers. A winner will be selected from each of CPOWNY’s 25 community newspapers by random drawing and each winner will receive a family pass for the Buffalo Zoo; two parents and two children. Next will be a contest for winning a named, baby giraffe plush animal, for sharp-eyed readers. A series of eight billboards by Lamar of Buffalo are located throughout the Buffalo metropolitan area that feature the photo and name of the new Buffalo Zoo baby giraffe. The first family from each of the 25 community papers to correctly submit all eight route and cross-street billboard locations will receive the collectible baby giraffe.

Outdoor billboards will be in place for six weeks, starting Dec. 15. According to CPOWNY Director of Marketing Dr. Janet Gane, the baby giraffe’s arrival will be heralded by a year-long calendar of events, distributed by the 25 papers, as well as WNY Health Magazine, with a article focused on conservation and preservation of the animals’ natural habitats. “There’s a real concern about poaching of giraffes, and other animals are also in danger,” Gane explained, “So, we want to make sure our readers are aware of that, as well as the first to know about this precious little one.”

Great ways to bring holiday happiness By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT
There are few joys in life that compare to giving a gift to a child during the holiday season. While sharing gifts with loved ones offers a treasured moment, giving a gift to a child less fortunate warms the heart in a lasting way like no other. This holiday season there are several ways that you can help to make a child’s Christmas a little brighter by donating a toy, gift card or making a monetary donation for a needy child or family. The Valley Community Center, 93 Leddy St, is organizing a donation campaign where they match holiday donors with families in need. “We are still seeking people to adopt a few families that have one or two children,” stated Peg Overdorf, Executive Director of the Valley Community Center, “We also will be visiting over two dozen homebound
seniors and bringing them a small gift, such as poinsettias or candy. We are still seeking donations to help with these visits.” You can contact the center at 823-4707 for additional information regarding the Valley Center’s program where you, your whole family or a group of co-workers can make a holiday happy for a needy family. The Old First Ward Community Center is seeking donations for their Dec 18 holiday party for the nearly 100 children that attend their center, as well as for seniors and needy families in their area. Contact Laura Kelly at the OFW Center at 856-8613 or visit them at 62 Republic Street for details on their holiday donation program, or to arrange for a donation pick up. Nearly any gift or food item imaginable will be accepted for donations as the OFW Center reaches out to children, families and seniors in need. The Seneca-Babcock Community Center,
Santa will visit the children of the Old First Ward Community Center on Dec 18.

1168 Seneca Street is also accepting donations for their needy families. Brian Pilarski, Executive Director of the center can be contacted at 822-5094 regarding specific needs. Toys for Tots is one of the largest organized toy drives for children throughout the country. In 2013 our local chapter of Toys for Tots, organized by the US Marine Corp, gave away over 75,000 items and collected more than $26,000 in monetary donations. The goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver a message of hope, along with the gift, to assist less fortunate children become responsible and patriotic citizens. A recognized nonprofit charity, Toys for Tots requires families to register
for receipt of donations and vets all recipients for need. This year new, unwrapped toys for the Toys for Tots campaign can be dropped off at Wegman’s Market, Walgreens, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Toys R Us, along with a slew of other sites available on the Toys for Tots website. All sites will be accepting donations until December 18. Most churches in the area also organize a giving tree or donation campaign for needy area families and children. Check out your local church bulletin or call their business office for information on their needs. It’s easy for anyone to donate during the season of giving. Gather some friends for a holiday gettogether and have each
person bring an unwrapped toy to donate or make a monetary contribution to one of these worthy causes in lieu of exchanging presents. Coordinate a “dress down for $5” day at work and donate the funds to one of these wonderful charities – and see if your company would like to gift match your donation as well. Remember – most of the donation campaigns listed are coordinated by tax-deductible non-profit organizations. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah or another holiday at this time of year, donating to a child or family in need is a great way to add kindness and good will into your holiday season.

‘Thank-A-Vet’ outreach draws student veterans
Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs recently held a “ThankA-Vet” outreach event at D’Youville College in Buffalo to issue discount cards to honorably discharged veterans who file their original discharge papers with the clerk’s office. A number of student veterans registered in between classes for the clerk’s “Thank-A-Vet” discount card that can be used at over 1,000 participating local businesses that have agreed to honor the card with a discount on purchases or services. For the veteran, filing discharge papers is free of charge and certified complimentary copies of recorded discharges are made for veterans or their immediate families whenever needed. Original discharge papers are proof of military service and can be used to establish eligibility for a variety of benefits including property tax exemptions and civil service credits. Recently, Military Times Edge magazine ranked D’Youville College fourth in the nation as one of the best four-year colleges and universities for veterans. D’Youville was recognized because it offers numerous benefits for their 250 student veterans, including the Post-9/11 GI Bill. In many cases, veterans’ spouses and children are also eligible for certain services and benefits as well. For veterans interested in returning to college or enrolling for the first time, visit www.dyc.edu/veterans. Veterans looking for additional information on the clerk’s “Thank-A-Vet” Discount Program, or if you’re a business looking to become a participating merchant, visit www.erie. gov/clerk/thankavet or call 858-4737.

Hydraulic Hearth gathers steam as Larkinville ends outdoor season By Catherine Miller COURIER CORRESPONDENT
Four score, one year ago this month the lawmakers of this land repealed Prohibition – and this country celebrated. On the 81st anniversary of the Repeal of Prohibition on Dec 5 the Hydraulic Hearth, Larkinville’s newest restaurant and beer garden at 716 Swan St, held a Prohibition Repeal Day celebration to commemorate the day, complete with flapper waitresses, prohibitionera cocktails and a few fedoras. “This is the biggest crowd we have had to date,” stated owner Harry Zemsky, of the newly opened Hydraulic Hearth, “Everything is going great so far. We have a fantastic, hard-working staff and they really make a difference.” It was only fitting and proper that Buffalo’s largest Prohibition Repeal party took place in the heart of Larkinville. During the early-1930’s prohibition era more than 10,000 cases of imported whiskey and gin were housed in the Larkin Terminal Warehouse which stood just yards from the present day Hydraulic Hearth. At the end of Prohibition the cases were ready and waiting to be distributed to area restaurants and lounges. It is said that as Prohibition was repealed by the 21st amendment, President Franklin D Roosevelt announced “What this country needs is a drink,” and the Larkin Terminal Warehouse went to work delivering their wares. The Larkin area continues to deliver.
Owner Harry Zemsky is joined by the great wait staff at Hydraulic Hearth The Prohibition Repeal anniversary celebration began as a ceremonial barrel procession was led from the Live at Larkin Robot Holiday party, which closed out the season for Larkin Square, across the street to the Hydraulic Hearth, leading to a night of 1930’s style merriment. So, what’s next for the Hydraulic Hearth celebrations? “We will be holding a Seinfeld Festivus party on Dec 23,” stated Zemsky, “There will be a Seinfeld trivia contest followed by the Festivus party.” While you are brushing up on your Seinfeld trivia you may want to join the Hearth for their “Bagels and Booze” brunch, happening each Saturday from 11am to 3 pm. Enjoy signature bagel sandwiches cooked in a brick oven from the Breadhive Cooperative Bakery along with mimosas, bloody Mary’s or try a beermosa or one of their other unique drink options. Gone are the speakeasies, bootleggers and moonshine runners
that once roamed the area. Today you can enjoy a great signature cocktail with a brick oven pizza in the warmth of the Hydraulic Hearth, 716 Swan Street, and check out their telephone booth artist podcasts, event nights, daily specials and all the other happenings at Larkin’s newest hotspot.

2014-15 Basketball Preview Small South Park will rely on speed, athletic ability
By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
With one of the smallest lineups around, the South Park boys basketball team will need to rely on speed and athleticism if it is going to be competitive this season. And fortunately for the Sparks, there are plenty of good athletes on board. “We don’t have a lot of size but we have some quickness, so we’ll see what happens,” South Park head coach Ron Killinger said. “We’re going to try to press and use our speed to our advantage.” South Park has some high hopes despite a new-look lineup. And despite a lot of turnover and a preseason shortened Snowvember, which left the school closed
for nearly two weeks, the Sparks got off to a quick start to the season , picking up non-league wins over Global Concepts and City Honors in early December. The Sparks graduated seven seniors from last year’s team, including top scorers Keon Godson and Tyler Mascio. But the young Sparks return their fair share of talent this season. Leading the returnees is junior co-captain James Baker, a third-year varsity player who entered the season with the most varsity experience on the current roster. The forward is off to a quick start this season, averaging 16.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in South Park’s first two contests, both victories. The other team captain is junior Mike McDonald, who is up from the junior varsity team a year ago. The guard scored 15 points in his varsity debut for the Sparks. Another addition from the JV team is Daryl Moore,
JEFFREY T. BARNES
Tyler Mascio, who graduated, was a key player for South Park last season. coming off a fine football Sparks. Also back is senior Anseason. He’s expected to be a big contributor, especially tonio Leonard, South Park at the defensive end, for the football’s all-time leading
receiver. He was an AllWestern New York selection on the gridiron and is expected to be key for the
Sparks on the hardwood as well. Another Spark to watch is senior guard John Vallone, who is one of the team’s top shooters. He averaged 16 points per game in South Park’s first two games. Senior D’Angelo Allen was on the varsity club last season and, although he didn’t see a lot of minutes as a junior, Killinger expects to see Allen on the floor much more often this season. South Park also welcomed Shakur Harris to the program. Harris transferred to South Park after starting at Cardinal O’Hara last season. He led the Sparks with 17 assists in the first two games. And the Sparks will need big contributions from everyone as it battles against its city league rivals. “McKinley, East and Middle College, those are powerhouses every year,” Killinger said. “We’ll certainly give those guys our best shot and I think the rest is there for the taking,”
Experienced Timon basketball has sights set on Manhattan Cup
By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
The Bishop Timon High School boys basketball team came oh-so-close last season to the coveted Manhattan Cup championship, making a run to the finals before falling short
against upstart Nichols. Many of the Tigers are back this season and have their sights set on finishing the job in 2014-15. “We think about that all the time,” senior forward Derick Simpson said. “In practices, coaches are always emphasizing it. Hopefully we get one this year.” Timon finished 15-11 against a customarily tough schedule and reached the finals with hard-fought wins over St. Francis and St. Mary’s. But Nichols ended Timon’s season
with a 49-43 championship game win. “That definitely motivates us,” sophomore William Lamar said. “We were right there against a team we felt we should have beaten. But that motivated us to get better and win it this year.” The Tigers got off to a slow start to the season as the snowstorm closed school for nearly two weeks and the football team’s run to the Monsignor Martin Athletic Association championship game left the dual-sport players away from
the hardwood. That was evident in a seasonopening loss to Williamsville North in the Cataract City Classic in Niagara Falls on Dec. 5, but Timon expects to be rolling soon. “It’ll be a hectic early season to say the least but we’ll get through it and we’ll manage,” coach Joe Mihalics said after an early December scrimmage against Frontier. “We have good enough athletes, we’ll get into basketball shape and we’ll be off to the races.” It starts with Simpson for the
Tigers, who will rely heavily on one of Western New York’s elite athletes. As a junior, Simpson averaged 13 points per game and added 12 rebounds a night en route to second-team all-Catholic honors. Lamar also returns after starting all 25 games as a freshman. Junior forward Claudius Modi and junior forward Quinton Lamar are also expected to be impact players for the Tigers. “We have a lot of players back from last year and a couple new guys too,” Simpson
said. “Everybody hustles and we’re all working hard. I think we’re going to compete; we’re very athletic so you’re going to see a lot of guys diving for ball and making plays.” As always, the Tigers have tough competition on the schedule. As well as the usual MMAA rivals, Timon also has games set against public school powers Niagara Falls and Batavia on the non-league slate. “We play the toughest schedule we can – or we try to anyway,” Mihalics said. “That just makes us better.”

Mount Mercy Academy, Springville-Griffith raise more than $2,900 for WWP By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR
For the third straight year, the Mount Mercy Academy girls basketball team wasn’t wearing an ordinary uniform, because for the third straight year, the Magic wasn’t playing an ordinary game. Communities from Mount Mercy and SpringvilleGriffith gathered Saturday (Dec. 6) at Mount Mercy Academy in South Buffalo for the third annual Mercy Heroes basketball game, an event geared toward raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project. Magic players sported jerseys that read “Duty,” “Honor,” “Service,” and “Country,” — four words that head coach John Glose, whose team went on to win 34-19, said symbolize Mount Mercy’s purpose for hosting the event. “We talked to the girls before the game,” Glose said. “What they’re doing, it means even more because it’s going towards something great.” The Wounded Warrior Project, according to the organization’s web site, aims to “honor and empower Wounded Warriors.” It looks to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, help injured service members aid and assist each other and provide unique, direct programs and services to meet the needs of injured service members. Glose suggested that Mercy (1-0) was just doing its part to help the WWP carry out its mission. In all, more than $2,900 was raised through donations, concessions, a 50/50 drawing and the raffling off of items donated by the Bills, Sabres and Bisons,
JEFFREY T. BARNES
This was the second year in a row that Mount Mercy Academy and Springville-Griffith plaed in the Mercy Heroes basketball. All proceeds from the event went to the Wounded Warrior Project. More than $5,400 has been raised in the first three years of the event. and baskets donated by members of the Springville and Mercy communities. “We teach these girls that it’s so important to give back, and this is a great example of it,” Glose said. “I’m really proud of them for raising so much money. It’s outstanding. Anything we can do; every little bit helps.” Springville took part in the event for the second straight year. While the Lady Griffins fell to 1-1 on the season, head coach Bob Gainey agreed with Glose that the event meant a lot more than winning and losing. “Both communities just came out in droves in support of a great cause,” Gainey said. “It’s great seeing parents from Springville and parents from South Buffalo really
come together and give to an outstanding cause. “We couldn’t be more pleased with the result.” Mercy and Springville weren’t the only high schools to have a hand in the event, either. Western New York Maritime Charter School sent students to perform a halftime rifle demonstration. AT&T, Wegman’s, Imperial Pizza and Community Papers of WNY were all sponsors for the event. The game itself was one the Magic controlled from start to finish. A relentless full-court press employed by Glose’s squad gave Springville fits and the Magic forced 19 Lady Griffins turnovers because of it. Courtney Kaczor had a team-high 10 points to
go with four steals and three rebounds for Mercy. Emily Sheehan added eight points, nine rebounds and four assists. Olivia Balys, Emily Gawlak and Maddie O’Neill also found the scoresheet for the Magic. Springville was led by Heaven Rollek’s 10 points and nine boards. Sarah Byrne also had nine boards. Julia Krzemien added four points and Megan Hanrahan and Birittney Luther each chipped in two apiece. Glose said he was happy with how his squad played in its season opener. “This is the start of a nice, long journey and we talked a lot about that,” he said. “Not everything was perfect, but that’s how first games go. We played tough defense, we hustled and I couldn’t be happier.”

2014-15 Basketball Preview Mount Mercy Magic looks to pick up where it left off
By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
Even after a championship season, there wasn’t much time to celebrate for the Mount Mercy High School girls basketball team. Instead, the Magic kept its focus on getting back to work and doing it all over again this season. Mercy claimed the New York State Catholic High School small school state championship for the first time in nearly a decade. And the key returnees kept the focus in making that wait even shorter this time around. “As soon as the season ended last season, they didn’t even want to stop for a week,” Mercy coach John Glose said. “They were talking about earning it again and getting back to work. As a coach, that’s music to my ears.” Four seniors, two juniors and four sophomores make up Mercy’s 10-player roster. The Magic return six players from last year’s team and all six are expected to see time in the starting lineup. Point guard Emily Sheehan, guard Courtney Kaczor and forwards Emily Benes and Maddie O’Neil are the seniors, while junior guards Emily Gawlak and Olivia Balys also return. That group will be the nucleus of Mercy’s repeat attempt. “Those girls are going to be my starters,” Glose said. “We don’t know for sure who’s going to be where, but those
JEFFREY T. BARNES
Courtney Kaczor and the Mount Mercy Magic won the NYSCHSAA small school championship last season. are the girls that are going to be leading us.” Not only do those girls have the experience of last season together, they spent a lot of time on the court all season long playing as a team. That cohesiveness will be huge for the Magic, in Glose’s eyes.
“All six of those girls played AAU basketball together in the spring and also played together all summer,” he said. “The hard work in the offseason has really gotten off to a hot start; they look really good.” Mercy lost the Federation
Class B semifinal to Staten Island power by a 57-53 count last March 22 at the Albany Times-Union Center. That came after the Magic claimed the program’s first state title since 2006 and a Monsignor Martin Athletic Association small schools
championship as well. And Mount Mercy is looking to do it all over again in 2014-15. Mercy started the regular season in the Wounded Warrior Project game against Springville on Dec. 6 before heading into the grind of the Monsignor
Martin Athletic Association schedule. “We do have high expectations,” Glose said. “The league is going to be extremely competitive, We’re going to just take it one game at a time and get better every day.”
