Concert rescheduled for January at Villa Maria By Debra Kelly

Back in November, Villa Maria College was forced to cancel the performance of Parvenue, the unique new duo of cellist Katie Weissman and oboist Megan Kyle. They have rescheduled the performance for 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29 at the Recital Hall, Main Building of the college, located at 240 Pine Ridge Rd. in Cheektowaga. The two musicians are well-known faces in the Buffalo music scene. In addition to their duo, they are also both members of the new

music group Wooden Cities, formed in July 2011 with the goal of promoting the work of new and underrepresented composers. Weissman is also a member of Tiny Rhymes, a local Chamber folk band. A parttime professor of cello and philharmonia section leader at Buffalo State College, she’s also featured in the recordings of English Rose Orchestrations, a Buffalo recording team. Kyle is originally from Chicago, where she performed with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago and now with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. She recently spent a month

Weissman will be performing a wide range of music from classic Baroque to works by Aho, Stadelman and Crawford-Seeger. The performance will be more than just an opportunity for the audience to listen, but

they’ll also be taking the time to give some background on each piece and explain context with the goal of enriching the listening experience. Any listener can tell when performers have a true passion for their music and their craft, and that’s certainly the truth about Parvenue. “I personally cannot envision a life for myself in which I am not performing, and spend most of my professional life doing so,” says Weissman. “I have the opportunity to play with many groups in many styles of music, and am constantly pushing myself to be a better musician.” For Weissman, their performances across the area are such a part of her life that to it’s impossible to think of

it any other way – and for her, it’s always been like that. “I started playing the cello when I was three, so when it became time to decide that I wanted to do in college, there really wasn’t any doubt in my mind I wanted to study music,” she says. It was a lifelong love that was encouraged by her parents, both amateur musicians. Her father was a student of the piano at UB before going on to become a doctor, and her mother played the recorder and is an artist. It’s not just in times of crisis – like the recent storm – that has Cheektowaga residents reaching out to lend a helping hand. Whether or not help is asked for, it’s often given, without hesitation and without a need for recognition or repayment. Senior Center Director Kerry Switalski

and her staff see it every day, and they’re taking an opportunity to give thanks for the people that make the community the wonderful place that it is. “We have hundreds of volunteers that help deliver Meals on Wheels every day,” she says. “But when we really need help, or we’re short on volunteers, we count on Bonnie Nowicki and Floyd Thomas. We know

they’ll always be there in a flash to cover a route or more than one if needed.” Chet Michalski is also one of their go-to Meals on Wheels volunteers, and he’s more than that. A friendly face to countless people, when it’s needed, he does much more than deliver meals.

Senior Choral travels the area entertaining others Center • from front When the snows come and the storms hit, that’s when he packs his snow blower in his van and makes his rounds again, cleaning out the driveways, sidewalks and steps of the people he knows could use the help. There are many people who volunteer for the Senior Stay Fit Dining Site, and every one of them provides a valuable service. It’s Betty Zajac and Mary White who take on all the chores that no one likes to do, without a word of complaint. They’re the ones washing the dishes, polishing appliances, wrestling with the big pots and cleaning up the spills. “They’re they quiet, on-call ladies who will do whatever it takes,” says

She’s the one who organizes the weekly Pinochle Tournaments, keeping score and handing out the prizes. “She is always doing something extra for the players,” Switalski says. “She’s always making baked goods, or bringing in treats, or doing something extra special for the holidays.” They would also like to recognize Penny Ellis and Harold Toulson, long-time volunteers in the Telephone Assurance Program. Both make weekly and sometimes daily phone calls to homebound seniors in

She also looks to Nancy Wilson, for her dedication and volunteer work with the Sunshine Group; she attends all the social outings and helps wherever and whenever she can with the homebound elderly, doing so for no other reason than she truly just loves to help. The center’s Senior Choral group is a group of musically-inclined residents who travel the area entertaining others at nursing homes. It’s all thanks to volunteer coordinator Micki Clark, who works with 40 different members to not only get everyone on the same page, but to select a variety of music that everyone not only loves to hear, but loves

the community, checking in on them, making sure their needs are met and also making sure there’s a friendly voice on the other end of the telephone. “They go above and beyond with their concern for their clients and the friendships they have fostered,” says Switalski. And that’s what being a part of the community is all about. Switalski and her staff are grateful every day for the contributions, the time and effort that each and every one of their volunteers puts in throughout the year, and are equally grateful to be able to continue offering the same great programs and companionship in the new year.

SPCA extends special thanks to two Cheektowaga sisters By Debra Kelly

Being a volunteer is a difficult thing. At times it’s heart-breaking, unforgiving work; there’s long hours, and sometimes, you can wonder if you’re really making a difference. According to Gina Browning, Director of Public Relations over at the SPCA Serving Erie County, there are two Cheektowaga residents who make a very, very big difference. Sisters Laura and Cathy Kurek take on huge responsibility over at the SPCA as foster care volunteers. It’s their jobs to give loving – and temporary – homes to cats that don’t do well in shelter environments. They may be too scared or too shy

to thrive in a shelter, they may need a little extra attention, but it’s that extra attention given to them by their foster families that really makes them into the loving – and adoptable – cats that find their forever homes in the end. As ongoing foster care volunteers, the Kurek sisters let homeless cats into their lives, and then they let them go, on to their forever families. Except for Bessie, one foster who just stuck in their hearts and stayed in their lives. They’re also members of the AdvoCATS team, which is responsible for keeping cats healthy, adoptable and stress-free during their time at the shelter. It can be a scary place, and the Kurek sisters are part of a tireless team

that helps to ensure that the cats at the Walden Galleria adoption center get all the handling, interaction and comfort that they need. “Cats often come in stressed, injured, or sick, and it’s their job to reassure them and to motivate them, mentally and physically, which in turn, helps with stress,” says Veterinary Services Manager Debby Williams. “They have turned cats who are hiding in boxes to cats that are at the front of the cage saying, “Pick me!”” Williams also credits the sisters with giving the AdvoCATS team the tools they need to do their jobs. They’ve hosted parties and encouraged the team to make blankets and toys for the cats, and they were instrumental in organizing

and running November’s rummage sale – a sale that raised a $10,000 donation for the animals at the shelter. In the time since they joined the AdvoCATS team and became volunteers in 2011, the Kurek sisters have been an invaluable part of the SPCA’s adoption process. They’ve helped not only foster cats, but get them ready for their big day when they go home with their forever families. In teaching a cat to trust and to love, you get to love them, too, but the heartbreak of saying goodbye doesn’t keep them from doing it over and over again – and for that, the SPCA is grateful. WNY resident offers sentimental and unique gifts for loved ones By Rebecca Gunning THE STAR EDITOR

Finding the perfect gift for special occasions can be tough – especially when searching for something of sentimental value. Lockport resident Toni Bullock may have exactly what you’re looking for. About 10 years ago, Bullock took a class at Gleam and Glimmer Glass Studio in North Tonawanda on wire wrapping stained glass. This evolved into making elaborate jewelry, which her friends loved, but didn’t find practical to wear. Then this past spring, Bullock decided to try something a little different, creating Toni’s Jewelry Designs. “This year I thought I have to go out and buy the stained glass. What else can I use? I’m great into recycling so I started looking around to see what I had around the house,” she said. “I came up with the idea of using broken wine bottles.” Bullock takes the broken pieces of glass, sands the sharp edges, and wraps wire around them, turning them into a necklace. “Every piece is different because of how it breaks. They’re all really, really different,” she said. “You can also add different color wire, or beads. If you’re doing a sentimental piece, you can also

add crystals to match your birthstones.” There is also the option of having the glass etched to look like beach glass or adding copper cladding or gold paint to the glass. Because Bullock offers all these different option, no two pieces are the same. “That’s the neat part about it,” she explained. “You can customize a certain amount and then the rest is the fact that the glass broke different. You can’t get a bottle to break the same way twice.” Bullock has also found these pieces to be conversation starters because of their originality. Women have stopped her in grocery stores to ask where she got her necklace. While the uniqueness of wearing a broken piece of glass on your neck is reason enough to get a piece of Bullock’s jewelry, it can be even more meaningful when the glass is from something special. Many special occasions involve a toast, whether it is at a wedding, baptism or anniversary. Bullock has found that many women she has spoken to believe it is the perfect gift for a bride to give her bridesmaids or a mother to give to her child’s godparents. That way when they wear it, they always have the memory of that special time close to them. “We all have things that we want to remember and if we see something

Everybody is so stressed. You need something.” Along with the broken glass jewelry, she also makes jewelry with natural stones, which have the power to improve your life in a number of different ways. “Natural stones have definite properties,” Bullock explained. “They can actually help you deal with stress or help you

with self-love or bringing love into your life.” For example, according to Bullock, turquoise is a healer and balancer and would be good to wear in an office. Amber is for grounding you and is a good one for relieving stress. She has researched the properties mainly through a book called The Crystal Bible by Judy Hall and obtained the stones through both jewelers and mineral shows. While there are some people who are skeptical of natural healing, Bullock

is a firm believer in it. “I have seen natural healing work. With anything that’s a natural, whether it is herbs or stones, it isn’t instant,” she said. “It’s a long-term process. You didn’t get to the state you’re in instantly, unless there was something extremely traumatic.” Bullock has also experienced the power of the stones work on herself. “I found that if I wore protective stones when I was at work, that for some reason I would have an easier day at work,” she said. “I’m not picking

up all the negativity. The stone is. I’m only coming home with part of all the nonsense.” In order to ensure the stones do their job, Bullock says after cleaning them, you should literally talk to them. While they will do what they are supposed to without that, they will be more effective if you tell them what you want. While the jewelry she makes is a beautiful accent on an outfit, Bullock says they are intended to help people as well. “The sentimental ones give you a good feeling because of the sentimental part. These actually give you a good vibration and help you deal with your life,” she said. “In both instances I’m actually trying to help you deal with your life.” Bullock currently has jewelry shown in Flight of Five Winery and Ticklebridge Co-Op. She also has appeared at the Community Market over the summer and at various churches and schools. If you are looking forward to getting back into your normal routine as you pack up your holiday decorations, you can help the environment at the same time by taking advantage of the City of Buffalo Recycling Event on Jan 17. Natural trees, free of tinsel and lights, can be taken to the City of Buffalo Engineering Garage as 1120 Seneca Street from 9am to noon on Jan 17, and you can walk away with mulch for your garden. A new clothing drive will be added to the recycling event. Used clothing, either gently used or worn and torn, will be used Mayor Byron Brown’s Western New York Coalition for Donated Goods Drive and will be reused or recycled,

The Buffalo City Mission might be making headlines during the holiday season with their Thanksgiving and Christmas meals, but their work goes on all year around; it’s all year around that they need help from the dedicated volunteers of the community, and there’s plenty of opportunities to provide a valuable service to the Mission, to lend a helping hand and to meet some amazing people – without even going far from home.

Local sports Ciezki hopes to have hand in another Central sectional win

Some history was made at Cheektowaga Central High School in 2014. The boys basketball team won the first Section VI championship in program history in March; the football team won its first Far West Regional title in November. At the center of all of that was a man named Zak Ciezki, who made two of the biggest plays in school history in 2014. His 3-pointer was the difference in a sectional basketball win over Amherst in the winter and his touchdown pass to Stephon Parker was the difference in the sectional football win over Bennett in

the winter. In 2015, Cheektowaga basketball is looking to make even more history and chances are, the Warriors will again turn to the senior leader. With the ballgame on the line, no matter the sport, Cheektowaga wants the ball in the hands of Ciezki, who has long proven that he is someone for opponents to fear in the big moment. “He wants the ball and we have no problem giving it to him and letting him go,” Cheektowaga boys basketball coach Pat Cullinan said. “We’ll live and die with a lot of what he does and that’s fine. The kids have that respect for him and they know what he’s capable of doing. “ Ciezki was a first team ECIC III all-star last season and the MVP of the Section VI Class A2 tournament, leading the Warriors to their first ever boys basketball sectional crown. And in his senior season, he’s just look-

ing to add to the banners on the wall. “I’m just looking to be a leader, whatever I have to do to help us win,” he said. “I want to help lead our team to another sectional championship and a division championship, too. “We’re working real hard to get a repeat. We have high expectations that we can win a sectional championship again and hopefully win a division too; we’re feeling good.” Cheektowaga hasn’t won a boys basketball league title since 1963. Those hopes took a bit of a hit on Dec. 16 when rival Amherst hit a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer to steal a 71-70 win at Cheektowaga. The Warriors will get another chance at Amherst on Jan. 23 but that’s not the focus. With many goals focused around the quest for multiple championships – just like football

– Cheektowaga is going to be ready to go regardless of the opponent. “We expect to go out with a good chance to win but we don’t take any team for granted,” Ciezki said,. “We’re ready to play every night.” And Ciezki will no doubt be leading the way. A Connolly Cup finalist in football, the senior guard and forward will be a major focus of Cheektowaga’s repeat Class A2 sectional title hopes in basketball as well. “It’s his fifth year in the program, we expect a lot from him from a leadership standpoint,” Cullinan said. “He did a lot in football and we expect the same out of him here (in basketball). “He’s really stepped up the last few years, physically he’s developed a ton and I think more importantly, from a mental standpoint he’s really grown up through the years.”

Newsome’s senior leadership an asset for Lady Eagles

There’s plenty of experience on the Cleveland Hill High School girls basketball roster, but the Eagles are still largely centered around the talented sopho-

more class. And on a team with lofty expectations this season, senior leadership is imperative. Good thing Shadymone Newsome is not only one of the area’s best players on the court, she’s also one of the best off the court as well. “She’s a great kid allaround,” Cleveland Hill coach Carrie Owens said. “She’s a great leader at home, she’s got a lot of responsibilities at home and a lot of responsibilities on the court — and in school,

she takes care of her work, too. She’s does a great job of kind of motivating and encouraging our younger kids.” After a strong season last year, Cleveland Hill returns everyone this season and the Eagles are thinking Section VI championship — at least. Eight of the 11 players on this year’s roster have prior varsity experience and that cohesiveness shows on the court for the undefeated Eagles. “We’ve all been together for a while now,” Newsome

said after an ECIC IV win over rival Lackawanna. “We’re a close team and everyone plays well together.” Newsome is a major reason for that optimism for Cleveland Hill and most local girls basketball fans expect the Eagles to compete for big things come season’s end, despite the fact that their successes largely depend on sophomores Aviance Clark, Sydney Turley and Jayla James. In her fourth varsity

season, the 5-foot-7 senior plays forward and guard and contributes in all facets of the game. On Christmas, she was second on the team in scoring (12.2 points per game), first in rebounds (57), second in steals (29) and second in blocks (7). She’s continued to put up impressive numbers for the Eagles, who have everyone back from last season. That’s been a big part of a strong start for Cleveland Hill, which opened with an eight-game winning streak and won

three league games before the holiday break. The Eagles will resume league play on Jan. 6 against Tonawanda in first place after the impressive 2014 portion of the season, the early highlight being an impressive 30-point win over an Eden team also expected to compete for the league championship. “I’m very happy with the way we’ve been playing,” Newsome said. “We just need to keep going. We want to take it all the way to states this season.”

Off to a sluggish start to the boys basketball season, Bishop Timon was in need of a spark. One of the more memorable victories the program has seen in a while just might be what was needed. Two days before Christmas, the Tigers endured four overtimes at St. Mary’s of Lancaster and escaped with a hard-fought 82-80 Monsignor Martin Athletic Association victory - one Timon hopes will prove to be a springboard to bigger success. “We needed that,” Tigers coach Joe Mihalics said. “We needed to know we can still battle, even though we have a lot of cleaning up to do. But it’s a great win, these kids really battled and left everything on the floor.” The slow start for the Tigers came after a snowstorm that cancelled school for nearly two weeks and a football run to the MMAA championship game that kept several basketball players busy. Timon opened the season 1-4 on the hardwood against its usually-tough nonleague schedule. The league opener was also expected to be a good one but not this good. In a rematch of last year’s Manhattan Cup semifinal, won by the Tigers, Timon had to work for 2 1/2 hours to get a MMAA victory. “That win was crazy,” Tigers senior Claudious Modi said. “First league game, to win like that, I’m proud of my

“A game like that, everybody battled their heart out, it’s a shame somebody had to lose,” Mihalics said. “It was a battle; the guys were fighting for every loose ball, big shots both ways. It was a fun game early in the year.”

League play finally gets into full swing for Timon on Jan. 6 with a battle against St. Joe’s. After reaching the finals last year, the Tigers have their sights set on winning it all in 2015. And if the first taste of league is a sign

of things to come, it’ll be a long and fun ride. “It’s a good win for us,” Harrison said outside the visiting locker room at St. Mary’s. “It’s a big momentum boost and always great to get a Monsignor Martin win.”

image of the form of the instrument? Marcus L. Wise, a Buffalo native and graduate of the University at Buffalo, is an artist, arts supporter and advocate. Hundreds of Western New Yorkers flocked to the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens on Dec 28 for their annual Dollar Day event. The one day a year when admission for all ages is just $1 brought out families and couples, groups of friends and seniors for a day of checker games amidst foliage, waterfall watching and sandbox playing. “I haven’t been here in eight years,” admitted one busy mom who brought along her four children for the first time, “My daughter loves the water pump in the Wegman’s Family Garden, and my son is thrilled with the scavenger hunt.” The Wegman’s Family Garden hosts weekly Saturday programming, 11am – 1 pm for kids 4-10 yrs. Each week the garden provides activities that engage children in exploring the wonders of the plant world and the
