Beginning at 2 p.m. heard a harp in person was at a performance of the Nutcracker ballet my mom took me to see when I was around 7 years old,” she says. “I remember being mesmerized by the harp at every ballet we went to after that.” It wasn’t until she was 11 that she took her first lesson, and today, she’s eager to pass on the same feeling learning and practicing the harp gave her. Performing for a younger audience – and interacting with them afterward – is one of her favorite parts of her extensive teaching career. The spontaneity of the youngest students keeps her on her toes, and she’s found that it’s better to have a wealth of songs, skits and stories to draw from than it

is to recite a regular lesson plan. Presenting children with a fun program tailored to what they want at the moment is the first step in opening the door to new experiences. For many in her audience, this will be the first time they’ve seen a harp in person, and she’s found that getting to try the harp is often her audience’s – and her – favorite part of the program. Walton is not just a performer but a teacher as well, it’s teaching that drives her. She’s currently a member of the faculty at the Buffalo Suzuki Strings school in North Tonawanda, and also founded a harp program in several Texas public schools before her relocation to

Buffalo. Walton has earned her Master of Music in Harp Performance and Pedagogy from the University of Houston Moores School of Music, and made her solo debut with the Kingsville Symphony Orchestra. For her, it’s a gratifying thing to be able to bring students to this often overlooked instrument. “The biggest reason why fewer people play the harp is accessibility,” Walton says. “Finding a harp to buy or rent and access to a harp teacher are big hurdles in many communities. Celebrate the season at the library By Debra Kelly

All across Western New York, children are eagerly hoping for a white Christmas that means Santa and his reindeer will have the perfect place to land as they make their rounds and deliver their toys. Christmas only comes once a year, unfortunately, but that makes Christmas celebrations that much more special. The Julia Boyer Reinstein Library will be holding their special Christmas celebration at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Registration for the event begins on Nov. 25, and can be done by calling 6884991 or just by stopping by the library. Children of all ages will

be treated to holiday events when their familiar library is transformed by the spirit of the season. “We do it all, from lighting the tree to singing carols, to making ornaments and serving Christmas cookies and milk,” said the library’s Jennifer Villa, known affectionately to the children as Miss Jen. While that’s their official Christmas celebration, a few days beforehand children between 5 and 12 years old will also be able to partake in another treasured holiday tradition – the making of the gingerbread house. “We’re calling them graham crackers houses, because that’s what we’re actually using, but they’re gingerbread houses,” said Villa. “We’ll have the gra-

ham crackers and all the decorations, so all they’ll have to do is bring their imaginations.” Building gingerbread houses is a bizarrely old tradition. It dates back to the 1600s, when master bakers and craftsmen throughout Europe would strive to create the most elaborate holiday creation that they could, made from slabs of gingerbread and a variety of edible decorations. It was such a valued tradition that originally, only elite bakers were allowed to make gingerbread outside of a narrow window around Easter and Christmas. Now, though, everyone’s allowed to join in the fun. The graham cracker house construction will be held at the library at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 11,

Villa and her colleagues are looking forward to bringing new opportunities to kids when it comes to enjoying the holiday season, and it’s something that they’re keeping up throughout the year. ECC unveils Fallen Heroes Memorial Park

In honor of the week of Veterans Day, Erie Community College gathered with local veterans, police and fire departments, and community members to proudly unveil its first responder-focused Fallen Heroes Memorial Park— dedicated to students who’ve lost their lives in the line of police, fire or military duty— on Thursday, November 13 outside ECC’s North Campus Law Enforcement Training Academy. “This park stands as a tribute to those ECC alums that made the ultimate sacrifice,” said ECC President Jack Quinn. “It will now be a place for others to remember and honor to their sacrifice for decades to come.” The park—aided by donations from such local Western New York companies as Campobello Construction, Lakeside Sod, Love Joy Metals, Inc. and Occhino Paving; design and construction work from the college’s Architecture Technology, Construction Technology and Visual Communications students; and completion by ECC’s Maintenance and Grounds Department—features trees and flowered latticework; steel silhouettes of veterans, police officers and firefighters; six towering flag poles flying the American flag and the flags of the

on active duty in noncombat circumstances. Many of the region’s police officers and firefighters who’ve died in the line of duty were either ECC graduates or graduates of the college’s Law Enforcement Training Academy (LETA)

as well, so the park will stand as a testament to their lives and the community they called their own. The morning started with the national anthem performed by First Niagara Center fixture Doug Allen.

Morning remarks were made by ECC President Jack Quinn; ECC representatives Richard Washousky, Dan Frontera and Ed Hempling; and various attending elected officials.

Donations sought for theme tray auction The Dick-Urban Community Association (DUCA) is planning our third annual theme tray auction for Thursday, Dec. 4. All proceeds will benefit the Dick-Urban Community Association Scholarship Fund.

Volunteer for the Hambone Express By Debra Kelly

The holidays are a busy time for the Buffalo City Mission, and Thanksgiving isn’t even over when they start looking ahead to the needs of the community for Christmas. The Hambone Express is the City Mission’s program that helps to ensure families in need across Western New York have a hot meal for Christmas. They can’t do it all without the help of the community, and now, they’re looking for volunteers to help bring Christmas dinner home for the holidays. On Christmas morning, 135 delivery teams are needed to help take 4,000 meals out into the community. Teams will be making their rounds between 8 and 11:30 a.m., leaving plenty of time for everyone to get home in time for their own Christmas dinner. In fact, according to Senior Director Aubrey Calhoun, it’s a great opportunity for en-

tire families to get together and volunteer their time on Christmas morning. “It’s such a great opportunity for people – and whole families – to be the only faces that many people see on Christmas Day,” said Calhoun. “Our delivery teams mean so much to so many people during the holidays.” In addition to delivery drivers and helpers, there’s several other volunteer opportunities that are particular to Christmas. Christmas is the time for not only helping our neighbors, but for cheerful, fun gift bags, too – the Mission is looking for anyone, particularly groups and organizations, that would be interested in putting some festively creative touches on the plain grocery bags that will be used to deliver thousands of Christmas meals. They’re also looking for Christmas gifts for women and children, to be handed out at their Cornerstone Manor. The simple donation of a gift can mean the difference between a

bleak Christmas and one with just a little bit of holiday cheer – along with the knowledge that someone out there in the community cares. Along with gifts, of course, comes the need for someone to help sort and wrap them. That work begins on Dec. 16, along with a setup of the festivities. There’s also a need for donations for the Mission’s Christmas Eve Punch Bowl party. Those interested can donate anything party-related from cracker and cookie trays to chocolates or condiments. And, with Christmas festivities comes the need to clean up afterward. From 9 a.m. to 11:30 p.m., volunteers will be needed to help clean up and put the Christmas decorations away for next year. North and South Cheektowaga capture the spirit of neighbors few blocks away. “What was interesting about this storm was that those of us who live in North Cheektowaga were fine and the south part of town got hit so hard,” said Kerry Switalski, Executive Director of the Senior Center and volunteer at the town’s warming station. “They mobilized the CERT (Citizen Emergency Response Team) members from the north part of town because they could get out to help run the shelter.” Lending a helping hand was about more than just shoveling snow for many of the CERT volunteers, who spent long hours manning the warming shelter before recruiting back-up help from the Senior Services and the Youth and Recreation departments of the town. For them, it was about making sure people knew that everything was going

Buffalo and the Western New York area is known across the country for its long winters and heavy snowfall, but with the recent unprecedented weather, the entire area has captured national – and even worldwide – headlines. And not for entirely bad reasons. In a time when strife and protests are tearing many communities apart, Buffalo is a symbol of neighbors pulling together to help neighbors in any and every way that they can. Many people in North Cheektowaga found they had dodged the worst of the storm, while much of South Cheektowaga was buried beneath feet upon feet of snow. That meant some neighbors were free to help those who might live only a

Switalski recounts a story of three senior ladies who found themselves at the shelter after snow had piled up on the roofs of their homes, blocking vents and triggering the automatic shut-off features on their furnaces. For them, the worry was about much, much more than just getting out of their driveway, it was about whether or not they were going to have homes to return to. “The women were sitting together, worrying about the amount of snow and worrying about their roofs collapsing,” Switalski said. “I watched as Jeff Baetzhold, one of the CERT members who was there throughout the storm, went over to the women to change the subject and just take their minds off their worries. And when the first priority for so many Cheektowaga residents is making sure that their neighbors aren’t just physically all right but emotionally supported as well, that speaks volumes about the type of neighborhood that it is. And others across the country would do well to look at Buffalo not just for its snow, but for its neighbors. “When people are brought to the warming site, they are worried, scared and now sure what to expect,” said Switalski. “More than half the battle is just reassuring them, keeping them calm and answering their questions. These are the things that I witnessed with the CERT volunteers – they care.” More help also came from the Wegmans on Dick Road and Bravo Restaurant, located in the Galleria Mall. Both organizations donated food to the warming shelter, making sure that hunger wasn’t one of the problems they were facing.

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs is reminding residents to “Renew Local” on Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to supporting area businesses across the country the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Jacobs is making it easy for shoppers to “Renew Local” while out bargainhunting by having green “Renew Local” mailboxes placed outside the Erie County Auto Bureaus located in the Northtown Plaza, Eastern Hills Mall and Urbandale Plaza shopping centers. “When customers visit these locations, they are supporting local businesses,” Jacobs said. “I hope that residents who are buying local also consider renewing their vehicle registrations locally by picking up our signature green envelopes.” Taxpayers should know that by not renewing their vehicle registration directly with the Erie County Clerk’s Office, residents lose 12.7 percent per renewal, which totals over $1.5 million annually. This revenue is critical to the county’s general fund to support vital programs and

services important to the community. Motorists can simply place their registration renewal form and check, made payable to the Erie County Clerk, in the postage-paid green envelope and drop it in the signature green box outside the Erie County Auto Bureau locations or any mailbox that is convenient for them. “I want to encourage individuals to support the region’s economy and patronize locally-owned businesses on Small Business Saturday,” Jacobs said. “I believe our ‘Renew Local’ campaign does just that, while making it an easy and accessible option for motorists to keep much needed revenue in Erie County.” The signature green envelopes are available at several convenient locations throughout Erie County including your local clerk’s office, the Buffalo and Erie County Public Libraries, Dunn Tire and the Erie County Auto Bureau. Catch a movie at the library By Debra Kelly

It’s an age-old question – which is better, the book or the movie? At the Julia Boyer Reinstein Library, the answer is, “both”. Starting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 15, they’re going to be hosting their Family Movie Series. You’ll have to stop into the library to see what’s showing, but since registration is required, interested families can do everything at once. “We black out the windows in our meeting room, pass out popcorn, and use our projector screen to create a cinema atmosphere without the cinema cost,” said the library’s Jennifer Villa. Co-founder of the movie night, along with fellow librarian Amy Glende, she’s showing just how far libraries have come in only the last few decades.

Once, the move version of a book was a somehow cheaper version of it – it was never quite as good, but now, even libraries are embracing movies quite wholeheartedly. In the end, the goal is much the same – to tell a good story, to make a lasting impression, and sometimes, to teach an invaluable lesson. And for some children who might drag their feet at reading a book, seeing the movie version of it might kick-start a reading habit that otherwise wouldn’t have happened. “I try to read the book before I see any movie based on it, but I’m not opposed to children seeing the movie before they read the book,” Villa said. “If the movie becomes a catalyst for them to pick up that book, then that is only ever a good reaction and I’m never opposed to that.” Libraries are coming up with new ways to get peo-

ple engaged with reading, but getting them through the doors for a movie is about more than just picking up and checking out a book when they’re done. It’s about the library’s other mission, which is to increase the amount of quality time families are spending together. An added bonus to the movie night isn’t just that it’s a free night out during one of the most expensive times of the year, but it’s a low-maintenance evening for all that doesn’t require anything but showing up. As impossible as it seems, New Year’s Eve is right around the corner, and it’s definitely not too early to start thinking about what you’re going to be doing. The Cheektowaga Senior Center has a New Year’s Eve Party going for the second year in a row. For years, the party was the responsibility of the center’s travel club, but when they decided they no longer wanted to be in charge of the planning-intensive event, it nearly fell to the wayside. Center director Kerry Switalski wasn’t about to let that happen, though, and now, it’s being overseen by her and Dawn Bellere, the Recreation Supervisor. “I’m so excited I’ll be ringing in the new year with our members and their guests,” says Switalski. “We even get seniors from other communities who come to party with us and their friends from Cheektowaga.” Doors will open at 6:30 p.m.

Krew and his band are one of the most well-known of Western New York’s party bands, with 35 years of experience and a wide range of songs from every era, ensuring that there’s going to be something that everyone can dance to. Guests are also encouraged to bring any snacks they might want in between all the dancing, and pop will be on sale for $1 per bottle. “Everyone enjoys having a nice dinner and music to dance to for such a reasonable price,” says Switalski. “And everyone definitely enjoys getting dressed up for a nice night out.” Tickets are $27 per person for Cheektowaga residents, and $32 per person for nonresident guests. There are 8 places at each table, although tables can be arranged to seat 10 if the whole table agrees. They’re filling up fast, with more than 100 tickets already sold for the event. Local sports Mount Mercy, Springville to give back in a big way By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR

When Mount Mercy Academy and SpringvilleGriffith Institute take the court at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at Mount Mercy Academy, they will be doing so with a purpose. For the third year in a row, and for the second time between Springville and Mercy, the game will be played as part of the Mercy Heroes basketball game. The game is part of an initiative that Mount Mercy started three years ago to help bring awareness to the Wounded Warrior Project. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Wounded Warrior Project. The purpose of the Wounded Warrior Project is to raise awareness and to enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members; to help injured servicemen and women aid and assist each other; and to provide unique and direct programs and services to meet their needs. Last year, on a snowy January day, the schools raised more than $2,500 for WWP. In the first two years of the event, more than $4,500 has been raised. “It is an amazing event,” stated Mount Mercy Academy coach John Glose. “I think a good thing we can teach these girls is service to others.” The communities of South Buffalo and Springville have helped in a big way, as well. Despite a snow storm that hit South Buffalo during the morning of the game last year, the tiny gym on Red Jacket

Proceeds directly benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. was packed with Springville and Mount Mercy supporters. “Giving back to their community,” said Glose, when asked what his team would get out it. “This is a great way for these girls to do. And I am really excited to be able to do it again.” This year, AT&T, Wegmans and a host of others are stepping up to make the event event more enjoyable than in years past. AT&T is the official sponsor of the event, while Wegmans will donate the water and sports drinks to be sold during the game. This is the second year in a row that Wegmans has come through for teams, community and the Wounded Warrior Project. “People are really stepping up and helping out, and it’s huge,” stated Glose.

“We can’t do it without them. It’s the entire community getting involved. The schools getting involved. It’s these kids getting involved. That’s what makes it great. Everybody chipping in and helping out.” For Mount Mercy guard Emily Sheehan, this is her third Mercy Heroes basketball game. She took part in the first one her sophomore year, when the Magic took on Buffalo Seminary. With family that served in the military, this even means a little bit more than whether or not you win or lose. It’s about raising awareness for those who fight and defend this country. “It has been a great experience so far,” stated Sheehan. “We all come together and work together

to give back to the community and for the soldiers that have, and are, fighting for us. When you think of Wounded Warrior, you think of people that risk their lives for us, and have gotten hurt because of it.” The 2014 Mercy Heroes basketball game will be held Saturday, Dec. 6 at Mount Mercy Academy, 88 Red Jacket, Buffalo, NY. 14220. Junior varsity will start at 1:30 p.m. followed by varsity at 3 p.m. Admission is $5, with all proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project. There will be a 50/50 drawing, raffles and other great prizes the day of the games. HGTV highlights Chautauqua Lake The crew from the popular HGTV Network program “House Hunters” recently completed an episode in the Chautauqua Lake region. Local real estate company Century 21 Turner Brokers worked with the production crew on the episode. Pie Town Productions, the company that produces “House Hunters,” sent a crew of three people to videotape the home buyers and their broker. Michelle Turner, with Century 21 Turner Brokers, worked with the production company for several months to find dynamic house hunters, with an interesting list of criteria for a house. She says she had to provide the production company with information about the home market in the Chautauqua region: the budget specifications of the house hunting buyers, the competitiveness in the area, the challenges of buying a home here and details of the different neighborhoods they were considering. But mostly the show wanted details about the Chautauqua Lake region. The three-person crew, consisting of a field producer, a sound engineer and a videographer, along with Turner and the homebuyers in tow, spent several non-stop days taping the show. The house-hunting couple was videotaped looking at several houses. “Working with them was a lot of fun, but also a lot of long days being on your feet,” Turner said. “It took a lot of energy and patience at the same time.” The crew also taped the buyers at several local establishments. Turner says in the end over 30 hours of footage was videotaped, which will result in the half-hour show that is viewed on the HGTV Network. The crew recently returned to videotape around the lake and county to highlight the region at its prettiest

so they can include it in the episode. It is expected to air on HGTV sometime in the fall/winter season. .“House Hunters” is the No. 1 show on the HGTV Network and is distributed to 98 million U.S. households. Episodes of “House Hunters” have multiple airings over several years. All of this means that Chautauqua County will receive an incalculable amount of free national publicity for the next several years.
