S-GI girls edge Rosten-less Flyers, down Maryvale on the road

Mike Haim

SPORTS COLUMNIST

At this time of year, in a variety of locations from coast to coast, kids are lining up to have a chat with Santa Claus and relay what’s on their Christmas wish list. But why limit it to the kids? I’ve long have been alarmed at the number of school-age kids who no longer visit with Santa, thinking they’re too cool to be part of a time-honored tradition. I was personally horrified years ago when my own son, perhaps around age seven, seemed to be the oldest kid in line. So in the spirit of the season, I’m taking the tradition back and have made a sports-related list of things I’d tell Santa I’d want this Christmas: First, I’d like to see one of our local college basketball teams pull off an upset of a nationally-renowned program. UB almost did it against top-ranked Kentucky a few weeks ago and will have another kick at a highly-regarded opponent when they travel to Wisconsin for a Dec. 28 game. St. Bonaventure took Pitt down to the wire this past Saturday, nearly ending the Panthers’ 25-game home winning streak against non-conference opponents. There are a wealth of stories about some upstart program recording a significant victory against a powerhouse, so why can’t we enjoy that kind of moment for a change? Next, I’d like to have some sort of personal epiphany which leads me to either love or loathe UB’s mission to become identified as “New York.” I’m still ambivalent about the idea, since I think the state needs a true representative on the national athletic stages but I also don’t want to see the university’s civic identity get compromised. I tend to think that most universities with a state moniker are located in smaller communities (think Michigan and Ann Arbor, Missouri and Columbia, Kentucky and Lexington, etc.), so it doesn’t make sense for Buffalo to make itself seem smaller. But the idea of having New York City-based alumni become a force in fund-raising and awareness is irresistible. At some point I’d like there to be an overwhelming reason to commit to an opinion either way. Next, I’d like to see fewer kids get saddled with terminal illnesses. While this doesn’t appear to be a sportsrelated wish, it becomes one when I see what seems to be a constant parade of teams and individual stars offering wonderful, heartwarming experiences to children who have been dealt a devastating prognosis. Bad news is a fact of life, and organizations such as “Make a Wish” have tried to make tragic journeys more palatable, but I’d like to see a day when this sort of outreach isn’t necessary.

Heaven Rollek had a game-high 15 points to go with 10 rebounds in Springville’s win over Maryvale.

By Dave DeLuca SPORTS REPORTER

Springville girls basketball coach Bob Gainey must be thrilled to see Ciara Rosten playing in big-time college arenas rather than on the high school hardwood.

Rosten, a 6-foot-2 center who now plays at Division I UMass, has been the proverbial thorn in Springville’s side for two years. Not this year. The graduation of Rosten has left Maryvale looking for a new identity and Springville was able to earn a road victory in the process, defeating the host Flyers, 43-31, on Dec. 12. With the win, Springville improved to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in league play. “Their team definitely looks a lot different,” Gainey said

of Maryvale. “I think they’re trying to figure out how to play without her (Rosten). It’s a big hole for them to fill.” Springville had lost four of its last five games against Maryvale with Rosten in the lineup before the 12-point victory last Friday. The Lady Griffs got out to a quick start, shutting out Maryvale, 15-0, in the first quarter. Maryvale came out in a 2-3 zone defense and Springville was able to respond, scoring points with its zone offense and scoring

points in transition, noted Gainey. “It was a great start, we got them right out of that zone,” Gainey said. Much like Maryvale, Springville has been forced to replace much of its offensive production from last year. The Lady Griffs graduated their top three leading scorers in Tia Woodarak (13.3 points-per-game), Alena Woodarek (8.4), and Erin Kwiatkowski (8.4), and four starters overall. However, Gainey likes what he’s seen

from his offense of late. “It is starting to show glimpses,” Gainey said. “That first quarter against Maryvale showed the potential of what we really could do. It tapered off a bit, but if we can sustain what we did to start the game over a 32-minute game, I think we’re really going to be tough to beat.” Heaven Rollek, Springville’s lone returning starter from a year ago, led the way for the Lady Griffs, scoring a game-high 15 points. Rollek added 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the season and had four blocks and four steals. “She was outstanding,” Gainey said. “She was great on both ends of the floor as always.” Gainey noted that he has seen junior guard Sara Kwiatkowski take on a scoring role to take some weight off Rollek’s shoulders. Kwiatkowski was second on the team in scoring with 10 points against Maryvale. “Sara has done a great job of knocking down open shots when she gets the chance,” Gainey said, “but also getting out in transition and getting some easy baskets.” Springville has yet to eclipse 45 points in a game, something it did 11 times last year. While the offensive production isn’t as explosive early on, Springville has maintained, or even improved, its defensive game. The Lady Griffs have limited opponents to just 25.5 points per game and have amassed 54 steals in their first four games, including 20 against Maryvale. “Whenever you can hold a team to nothing to end a quarter, that really sets the tone for the game,”Gainey said, referring to the Maryvale game. “Our activity on the ball and away from the ball has been a huge plus.”

Wiede breaks own record, Griffs compete at Fredonia

By Dave DeLuca SPORTS REPORTER

When Springville’s Jess Wiede broke the school record in the shot put last year, it took three weeks for anyone to even realize it. This year, there wasn’t any confusion. Wiede’s record-setting performance highlighted the Springville co-ed track team’s meet at Fredonia State College on Dec. 13. Wiede’s 35-foot throw broke her previous record of 33 feet, 8 inches she set last year at Lancaster. “She’s been in the low 30s in practice, she hasn’t hit 35 feet so that’s great for her,” Springville head coach Joe Marvin said. “Her speed is a little bit better than last year and I think her confidence is

higher having thrown 35 last year in outdoor.” Wiede finished 10th at sectionals last season, however, she has already jumped to second place in the sectional seedings with seven meets still to go before the sectional meet. Freshman Elle Russell had a first place finish in the 3,000 — with a time of 12 minutes, 6 seconds — and ran a leg in Springville’s 4x800-meter relay team that finished in fourth place. Russell was a sectional qualifier in outdoor last season as an eighth grader and is poised to lead Springville’s distance team with the graduation of Jess Wojkowiak, who is now running cross country at Division II Mansfield University. “She’s looking good,” Marvin said of Russell. “She took some time off after the cross country season and I think she has to get her endurance back up a little bit, but she ran some good races at Fredonia.”

Russell also took third place in the 1,600 (5:39). Joelle Adamczyk, Kalei Brautlacht, Nicole Paler, and McKenzie Maloy teamed up to finish first in the 4x400 (4:48.5). Adamczyk anchored the team and broke open a tightly-contested race. “She ran a smart race,” Marvin said of Adamczyk, who also ran a leg in the 4x800. “I guess you could say she ‘hawked’ the girl she was going against; she stayed right in her hip pocket, up until she found a good time to pass her on a turn and basically smiled and finished out the rest of the race well ahead of her.” Juniors Molly Darling and Brautlacht finished in second and third place, respectively, in the triple jump. Darling jumped 29 feet, 10 inches and Brautlacht jumped 29 feet, 6 1/2 inches. Darling added a sixth place finish in the long jump (13 feet, 3 1/4 inches). BILL WENDE/SECTION6RUNS.COM

Griffins’ loss to Maryvale ‘a step in the right direction’ after league-opening loss to Lake Shore By Dave DeLuca SPORTS REPORTER

In a season that spans four months, seeing dramatic improvement in just five days may bode well for the Springville boys basketball team moving forward. Springville opened its league play with a 71-40 loss to Lake Shore on Dec. 11, but made strides in a 58-49 loss to Maryvale on Tuesday, Dec. 16. Springville fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in ECIC III play. “We really think this game was a step in the right direction,” Springville head coach Frank Noeson said of the ninepoint loss to Maryvale. “We’re focused on improving in certain areas and it showed a bit.” The Griffs had a rocky start to their league schedule with the 31-point road loss to Lake Shore, just Springville’s fourth 30-point loss in three years. Springville, which played without injured senior point guard Kyle Crotty,

committed 27 turnovers, with most coming against Lake Shore’s full-court press. “Inexperience against pressure is what killed us,” Noeson said. “Unfortunately, even three games in, guys are still playing really tentative and nervous. When the heart’s racing, and especially on the road, we seem to get tunnel vision. We aren’t comfortable and calm enough to make reads and good decisions with the basketball.” When Lake Shore wasn’t forcing turnovers and turning them into fast-break points, they were hitting 3-pointers, and lots of them. The Eagles hit seven 3-pointers in the first half and finished with 10 for the game. AJ Bergum scored a game-high 14 points, while connecting on four 3-pointers. “After their first 3-pointer hit the rim, which felt like seven times, and then fell, I knew we were up against it,” Noeson said. “We defended well for spurts, and then there were others that obviously we didn’t. They had both easy looks and contested looks. “I think they banked in a few from the wing. When stuff like that starts happening, it can take the wind out of a young team. It’s a matter of staying strong men-

The team is 0-2 in league action and 1-3 overall this season. tally and playing 32 minutes.” Springville made a quick turnaround from the blowout loss, managing to stay with Maryvale all game. The Griffs shot just a shade over 30 percent from the field, but the difference was on the offensive glass. The Griffs pulled down 17 offensive rebounds, and on a number of occasions, cashed them into points. “We’re not a very high per-

centage shooting team, so we need to get more chances than our opponents,” Noeson said. “Everyone needs to go after the ball on the offensive glass in order to do that. I thought this was our most aggressive game thus far in that aspect.” Springville’s 6-foot-6 senior center Pat Emmick had a career-high 14 points in the loss. Maryvale didn’t have a defender

that could matchup with Emmick and he took advantage. He scored off turnaround jumpers from just outside the low post and converted offensive rebounds into points, too. Emmick led Springville with four offensive rebounds. “I spoke with some of the post players prior to the game,” Noeson said. “We need offensive production out of that position. We can’t rely only on our guards. Pat stepped up this game and really tried to provide us with that. Pat has excellent touch for a kid who’s 6-6. He’s way more comfortable facing the basket than as a true, post-up center.” Maryvale got off to a 7-0 start, but Emmick was able to get Springville on the board with an offensive rebound and a putback layup. Springville stayed with Maryvale, cutting the Flyers’ lead to 19-17 midway through the second quarter, and again cut it to two points, 27-25, early in the third quarter. The Griffs just couldn’t sustain a big enough run to get over the hump, in large part because of the team’s 22 turnovers. In ECIC III play, a majority of teams in the division focus on defensive pressure and forcing turnovers, particularly, full-court pressure. Springville

isn’t likely to see opponents fall back into a zone defense and Noeson has a remedy to solve the Griffs’ turnover woes. “We can’t rely on one or two guys to beat pressure,” the coach said. “More passes and bringing guys closer to the ball is imperative. We shouldn’t be surprised by pressure, especially in our division, so I think it should improve.” Noeson spoke about the team’s inexperience also contributing to the high turnover numbers. The Griffs graduated four starters from a year ago, but senior Devin Pazzuti has provided some leadership to a relatively young team, Noeson noted. “I’m really impressed with how Devin Pazzuti has filled into a leadership role,” Noeson said. “His drive and determination while on the floor provides an example for his teammates. There’s no head hanging or quit regardless of situation. He takes accountability for his mistakes and works to improve on them.” Springville will host Tonawanda in a nonleague contest on Dec. 22, before hosting the Emerling Ford Holiday Tournament from Dec. 27-30.

Lengthy Wildcats not utilizing size early on, skipper says By Dave DeLuca SPORTS REPORTER

Looking for some height? The West Valley Lady Wildats have it, they just have to start using it. That’s the message West Valley coach John Arbogast has for his group as the season moves along. The Wildcats were upended by Salamanca, 47-34, on Dec. 9 to fall to 0-4 overall. If West Valley wants to rebound from its winless start, the Wildcats will need to take advantage of their size, Arbogast mentioned. “We need to play to our strength and we didn’t do

their shots from outside. “We were getting the ball inside, but we weren’t able to take advantage. We had 20 missed layups and lowpost shots. We can’t do that. We make those shots and we’re in the game.” West Valley has length in their frontcourt that many teams in Section VI — no matter the school size — don’t have. Three-year starter Kaitlyn Snayczuk measures in at 5-foot-11 and EMYLE WATKINS starting forwards EmmaLea and Cameron Cameron McLeod is Erlandson McLeod go 5-foot-10. bound every team we play. The rebounding numbers can be a little misleading at times, though. “In the Salamanca game, we did a box-and-one, putting EmmaLea on their shooter and that took her away from the basket. Even with that, we have to do a better job, especially weak side rebounds. We need better production from our two girls down low, we need to box out.” West Valley took an early 7-0 lead and led 11-8 after the first quarter. Salamanca put together a solid second quarter to take a 3-point lead into halftime. From there, Keely Watt took over. Salamanca’s junior guard finished with a game-high 22 points and six 3-pointers to help the Warriors pull away in the second half. “After halftime, we just

couldn’t get back over the hump,” Arbogast said. “Our starters played practically the whole game so they were pretty gassed. [Watt] caught fire, too, and that hurt us.” Snayczuk led West Valley with 11 points, six rebounds and five blocks. As a team, the Wildcats had 11 blocked shots. The team’s length down low helped them get some stops and may have forced Salamanca to the perimeter more. “Kaitlyn Snayczuk was one of the league leaders in blocks last year so she’s pretty good at that,” Arbogast said. “She had five and we had 11 as a team; I’m not sure if that discouraged [Salamanca] from getting it in the post, they were primarily shooting from the outside. Blocking was one of the good things that we did.”

Arbogast called the Wildcats’ early schedule a “rough December” having already played four Class C schools and with the Emerling Ford Holiday Tournament taking place in a couple weeks. Springville, Cleve Hill and West Seneca East will all be at the tournament, much larger schools than West Valley. “We’re going into the Springville tournament like we do every year, “Arbogast said. “We’re the underdog in just about every game that we play, but going into the tournament, you’re playing a good Springville team, they’re a Class B, and they’re a good B. You throw in West Seneca East, they’re an A school… “It’s tough, but, I’ve said it before. If we play focused basketball, we can play with these teams.”

Along with host Springville, a Class B school, Gowanda (Class C), and Eden (Class B) will be in the tournament. West Valley is the smallest school in all of Section VI and facing large schools will be a test, but Clayback thinks his team is up for the challenge. “If we can play the way did in our last two games, even the first half against Gowanda, we can definitely challenge any team that we play,” Clayback said. “Our first game against Springville to open up the tournament will definitely be challenge, but hopefully we can put it together and get to the championship game.”

Rod, Gun & Game: Lake Erie walleye study in progress By Forrest Fisher OUTDOOR COLUMNIST

More than three decades ago, my Lake Erie boat fishing mentor, Russ Johnson of Elma, New York, taught me all about night fishing for Lake Erie walleye fishing out of Buffalo Harbor – and how to catch fish just about any other time too. Johnson was an electronics equipment expert and had built his own sonar, water temperature monitoring devices, light penetration measurement recorders, boat speed indicators and a host of other boat and fishing equipment that helped him identify how to become a consistent walleye-catching angler. The key word is “catching”. In the 1970’s Johnson has already figured out that hard body lures from the factory had to be fine-tuned to run true, and his favorite lure was a Rebel Deep Wee-R. The box said the lure would dive to 10-12 feet, Johnson had them bumping bottom at 25 feet with a little tuning. Then he calibrated his rods to resonate with the lure wobble vibration frequency and controlled the distance back from the boat to the lure while he trolled various bottom structure close to Buffalo Harbor. The result was perfect depth control for lure presentation to feeding fish, based on boat speed and line deployment. If general, if we fished slow speed trolls at night, we caught walleye. If we fished fast speed trolls during daylight, we caught bass – not ordinary bass, but giant bass in the four to seven pound range – all this on the same structure. During night fishing stints, Johnson would zero in on structure specific bottom cover in the lake that could be found within a 10-minute boat ride from Erie Basin

Marina. Working that cover from 10:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m., Johnson and I would limit out on walleye through the entire summer. We would hardly see another boat out there at those hours, but starting in mid-July, one thing we found different was the color and shape of the walleye we caught - they were streamlined and sort of bluish-gray in color. Johnson called them “wolfpack walleye” because we would troll four rods at controlled deployment distances to avoid tangles and would hook up with two to four walleye each pass over the designated structure. Pretty awesome right!? It was! The guy was a genius angler way before the science of FishingFacts and In-Fisherman magazines ever reached the 1970’s newsstands. Today we all know more because of science and the study of fish, but back then, the softspoken and humble Johnson was a stand-alone world class fishing giant among local fishing anglers. Johnson knew that the July and August walleye we were catching were not the same as the May, June and September walleye. The color, shape and voracity of their feeding and fighting protocol was different. He informed DEC officials of this thoughts and soon was recognized for his virtuosity. DEC biologists all looked forward to hear of his mastermind observations at meetings with the public. Johnson helped the DEC to first question if Lake Erie walleye movements were real. Amazing stuff. Today we all know that those walleye were western basin walleye and they migrated the entire length of Lake Erie from Detroit to escape the shallow, hot, summer water western basin of Lake Erie. Our eastern basin is 80 percent deeper and as a

The result may be newly define management areas and fish quota zones for all of Lake Erie, but one thing for sure, the acoustic tagging efforts will yield many study factors, allowing NYS to once again contribute to the betterment of the fishery that millions of anglers enjoy in Lake Erie - the walleye fishery.

Some 40 years later, the DEC Lake Erie Unit out of Dunkirk is working the Great Lakes Acoustic Telemetry Observation System, a program conducted together with Ohio, Canada and Pennsylvania to quantify the consistency, timing, demographics and other key factors of the west to east (and back again) walleye migration. This will also allow DEC to better understand our eastern basin walleye stocks, our deep water lake trout stocks and sturgeon too. In a recent formal presentation, Jason Robinson,

NYSDEC fish biologist said, “The collaborative effort will utilize acoustic telemetry with surgically implanted transmitters in the fish that will be monitored by strategically placed bottom-based receivers to track the walleye and other fish species in the study. We have already deployed a few acoustic receivers in walleye this past June, but the majority of New York’s contribution to the Lake Erie study with receivers and tags will begin next year in 2015.” Just like the GPS in your car can tell you where you are, by working in cooperation with other researchers in the Great Lakes Basin, DEC can gather GPS-style data

for the fish movements from acoustic receivers far beyond NY waters. Robinson adds, “Previous inter-state jaw tagging studies have verified the annual eastward migration of west basin walleye into the east basin contributes to the summer walleye fishery in NY. The arrival of west basin walleye may buffer our relatively smaller east basin walleye stocks from fishing pressure. By using acoustic telemetry in cooperation with other investigators we will develop an improved understanding of the periods when walleye spawning stocks are mixed (or separate) and help identify when individual walleye populations are vulnerable to exploitation.”

Hand Warmer Gifts For some reason this hunting season, I had cold hands and started to search how to keep warm. Found these Zippo hand warmers that provide about 10-12 hours of gentle, consistent, odorless heat, which was longer than the disposable warmers, and they’re refillable with simple lighter fluid so they don’t end up in landfills. This hand warmer is all metal and comes with a fleece warming bag, so the heat is gentle on your skin. You can personalize this device as a gift with engraving at zippo.com. Cost is under $20, great for anybody heading into cold weather activities this winter. FROM the SIDELINES A time of the year for giving: Bills distribute gifts to kids, fans By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR

Buffalo Bills long snapper Garrison Sanborn fondly remembers what it was like to be a kid during the holidays. “I was a kid once,” Sanborn began. “It’s a blast to get gifts.” That’s why Sanborn decided to give a few of his own recently. Sanborn, a sixth-year NFL veteran, was one of a host of Buffalo players to participate in the Bills Toyota Rookie Club’s annual holiday party for children on Tuesday, Dec. 9, inside a winter wonderland-themed Jim Kelly Club at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Over 100 children from 10 local organizations were invited to attend the event. Children from each organization submitted a holiday wish list before the party,

and Bills players — Sanborn included — distributed bags full of gifts to everyone of them. Sanborn, who’s taken part in the event since his rookie year, said seeing how excited the kids were made participating more than worth his while. “There’s nothing like it, seeing kids happy,” Sanborn said. “It’s just a regular day to try and bring a smile to their face, and that’s why we’re here. I know I’ll keep coming as long as I’m [in Buffalo].” And Sanborn wasn’t alone. Bills running back C.J. Spiller, who has also taken part in the event since his first NFL season in 2010, was also in attendance and agreed that making kids happy is something he and his teammates strive to do. “The biggest thing is just seeing the smiles on their

Buff State hockey downs Johnson & Wales BUFFALO, NY—Jason Zaleski (Scranton, PA/Scranton) scored three times and Ryan Salkeld (Virginia Beach, VA/Churchland) tallied four points to lead Buffalo State (3-6-2) to a 5-3 victory over visiting Johnson & Wales (55-1) in a non-conference game today at the Ice Arena. Salkeld opened the scoring with just over three minutes remaining in the opening period when he forced a turnover just inside the Wildcats’ blue line and buried the breakaway attempt. Johnson & Wales drew even, but Zaleski’s first of the game reclaimed the lead for Buffalo State with just 20 seconds remaining in the opening frame. Salkeld gave the Bengals a 3-1 lead with his second of the game and fifth of the season on the power play early in the

second period, but the Wildcats answered again with a power-play tally of their own. Zaleski’s second just under a minute later pushed the lead to two again, but JWU closed the deficit to 4-3 late in the middle stanza. Buffalo State allowed just five shots in the third period, all in the closing minutes, and Zaleski scored his third of the game and fifth of the season on the empty net to seal the victory. Ian Sylves (Sloan, NY/ JFK) finished with 20 saves in the victory as the Bengals outshot the Wildcats, 25-23. The Bengals finished 1 for 6 on the power play, and JWU was 1 for 3. Buffalo state will break for the holidays before facing Neumann in the first round of the Norxqwich Tournament in the New Year on Jan. 2.

Wallace, Edwards guide Bengals past RIT BUFFALO, NY – Senior Ashley Wallace (Lockport, NY/Starpoint) poured in a team-high 23 points to lead Buffalo State women’s hoops (4-4) to a 74-66 non-conference victory over RIT (5-3) on Saturday afternoon in Sports Arena. Keyonte Edwards (Buffalo, NY/O’Hara) recorded a career-high 12 rebounds, pacing, the Bengals defense and tallied eight points.

Buffalo State finished the night shooting 39.1 percent (25-64) from the floor, 44.4 percent (4-9) from long range and 55.6 percent (20-36) from the charity stripe. The Bengals also recorded 14 fast break points and outrebounded the Tigers, 58-38. The Bengals returned to action Monday at Pitt-Bradford, where they lost, 77-68. Wallace had her third double-double of the season.

faces,” he said. “Growing up, most guys didn’t have this opportunity to have NFL players hand them Christmas presents. So for us to be able to be put on a platform and be able to give back to the community, it means a lot, but most important, it means more to the kids, just to see them smiling.” Smiles turned into super duper smiles during the latter stages of the gift-giving. With tree-side gifts becoming sparse and a handful of children yet to receive one, a group of Bills players emerged from another room riding bicycles. And the child-sized bikes certainly weren’t for 6-foot-4, 310-pound center Eric Wood or 6-foot5, 343-pound guard Cyril Richardson. They were for the kids, an announcement that drew both laughter and applause from party-goers. “It was great to see,” Sanborn said. Throughout the evening, children got a chance to dine and engage in conversation with Bills players. Rookie cornerback Ross Cockrell noted that was his favorite part of the evening. “Just sitting down and getting a chance to talk with some of the kids about what they go through every day, going to school, what their favorite subjects are and stuff like that,” Cockrell said. “That was the best part about it. “It’s gratifying. Any chance you get to hand out smiles and happiness, it’s

At 8-6, Buffalo can finish no worse than 8-8. It last had a non-losing record in 2004, when Drew Bledsoe was still under center and Mike Mularkey was calling the shots as head coach. The Bills’ secondary shined against the Packers, holding likely MVP Aaron Rodgers to no touchdowns

and two interceptions for the first time in his illustrious career. Recent addition Bacarri Rambo had both picks. While the Bills were victorious, their offense struggled mightily and didn’t find the end zone once. Marcus Thigpen returned a punt 75 yards for a touchdown, Dan Carpenter tacked on four field goals, and Mario Williams had a late-game strip-sack of Rodgers that resulted in a safety to round out the team’s scoring. “We have a great defense. We know that those guys are going to make plays for us and we’ve got to take advantage of them,” running

back Fred Jackson said. “We didn’t get in the end zone, which is something you need to do to win games, but as long as our defense keeps us in the game like that and keeps making plays, we have an opportunity to win.” Buffalo will take its staunch defense on the road Sunday when it visits Oakland (2-12). The Raiders are coming off a 31-13 loss to Kansas City but have won two of their last four games, including a Week 13 win over San Francisco. Kickoff is slated for 4:25 p.m. The game will be broadcast on CBS.

Cheektowaga’s Softball Central is focused on all softball, all the time

Softball Central is located at 3223 Broadway St. By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER

Even during down times in life, Kevin Hufford always had softball in his life. Back on his feet now, the Cheektowaga resident is looking to make the sport an even bigger part of his daily routine. Hufford and his wife, Melissa, launched Softball Central, located at 3223 Broadway St. in Cheektowaga, last week. The indoor facility is focused strictly on softball. Softball has kept us going for an awful long time,” Kevin Hufford said. “We’re always been doing softball anyway. They say if you do what you love, you never have to go to work. I hope to come here every day.” Hufford has always been involved in softball. He started coaching at Cheektowaga Southside softball in 2001 and combined with his

wife as well as Beth O’Brien to rebuild the Cheektowaga Crabapple travel team. He’s also been an assistant coach at Medaille College, Hutch-Tech High School and currently Erie County Community College. But his life changed on Aug. 28, 2009 when he was seriously injured after being hit by a truck while paving city streets. Unable to work and battling multiple back surgeries, Hufford also had time to dream. “The thought of being able to possibly open this thing up while we were coaching all these kids kind of kept us going,” said Hufford, who obtained a business degree after the accident. “Now we’re going to take a shot at it.” Softball Central will include two batting cages, two pitching cages and a stationary cage. There will be batting lessons, pitching lessons and

a place for girls to stay sharp when the snow is falling. It’s all softball. “It’s just going to be softball,” Hufford said. “There’s plenty of places people can go and get all the baseball they want inside. We’re hoping if we just focus on softball. Hopefully we can be a little less expensive and a lot more focused and it will all work out.” Hufford said he will offer some free time at the facility to JFK, Cleveland Hill, Maryvale and Cheektowaga Central. And of course St. Mary’s of Lancaster, where his daughter Erin is a sophomore and one of the elite softball players in Western New York. A member of the Gold Coast Hurricanes out of Florida as well as the lo-

cal New Era Diamond Girls, Erin has a goal of playing collegiately for the University of Tennessee. “She’s almost more talented than we can afford her to be right now,” Kevin Hufford said with a laugh. But that’s ultimately the goal for Softball Central, to help local players grow towards big dreams. Hufford expects players from Niagara Falls to Hamburg to Clarence will be at the facility for individual lessons. Now that it’s up and running, it’s expected to grow stronger and stronger for years to come. “If it makes a dollar more than it costs, it’ll be here forever,” Hufford said. “I’ll just have to get a job. If I can make a living doing this, that would be all the better.”

Cattaraugus County helped welfare recipients The Cattaraugus County Departent of Social Services announced that 23 residents, formerly receiving welfare benefits, have been employed. Social Services staff report that in November, 23 county residents received training, work experience and a chance to get high school equivalency diplo-

mas, when necessary. The 23 Social Services clients were assisted by department staff in order to help them enter the workforce to reduce or eliminate their need for public assistance. The staff also assisted clients with soft skills such as proper work place conduct, punctuality and other areas that impact successful job

placement and retention. “Public assistance is temporary help for people in difficult situations, said Social Services Commissioner Dan Piccioli. “The sooner we can move people back to selfsufficiency, the better for all, including tax payers, he said. Those in need of assistance, can call 701-3500.

Erie County Bar Assoc. and Jacobs start Suits for Troops

SUBMITTED

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs, left, helps Keri Callocchia Esq. load a number of donated suits, shirts and ties for delivery to support returning veterans who are in search of a new career. For the second year, Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs and the Erie County Bar Association announced their collaboration on a mission to collect lightly-used men’s and women’s suits for local veterans searching for employment. Everything collected through the month of December will be donated to the Veterans One-stop Center of Westerm New York. The Veterans One-stop Center is a communitybased nonprofit that offers U.S. veterans, service members and their families the convenience of a one-stop center to access a suite of services. Veterans One-stop provides vital assistance to former military personnel in transition, including career counseling and job placement. “We owe so much to our servicemen and women, said Jacobs. “This is another opportunity during the holiday season for us to thank the veteran community for their service.

Last year, the program was extremely successful and provided over 100 veterans with professional attire so they could be “dressed for success when competing for employment. “Suits for Troops initially requested suits, but this year we identified a greater need to include dress shirts, shoes, belts and ties, said Keri Callocchia, who created and oversees the event. “It really doesn’t matter what kind of job a veteran is applying for, even if it is a job where you won’t wear a suit, you need one for your interview, she said. Anyone interested in supporting Suits for Troops can drop off their lightlyused suits, dress shirts, sport coats, blouses, ties and shoes at the Erie County Clerk’s Administrative Office located in Old County Hall at 92 Franklin Street, Buffalo, on the first floor. Anyone having additional questions, contact Keri Callocchia, Esq. at 883-3953 or keri@callocchialaw.com.

Cattaraugus County nutrition sites party schedule Cathy Mackay, director of the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging, has announced plans for the Senior Wellness and Nutrition program holiday meals in December. “Dining with friends at a nutrition site is more fun than riding in Santa’s sleigh on Christmas night, Mackay declared. On Wednesday, Dec. 31, the nutrition sites will be serving a good luck dinner of roasted pork loin and gravy, long noodles, red cabbage, corn muffins with margarine, oranges and coconut sno-cakes for dessert. Reservations are required 24 hours in advance of the dinners and can be made by

calling the nutrition site in the following communities: Cattaraugus, 257-3035; Delevan, 492-2543; Franklinville, 676-3993; Gowanda, 532-5598 and West Valley, 942-6695. There is a suggested vol-

untary contribution for a meal; however, no one will be denied a meal due to inability or unwillingness to contribute. For more information about the upcoming holiday dinners, or for information about the programs and services available for the county’s seniors, call the Cattaraugus County Department of the Aging at 373-8032 or 800-462-2901.
