White-Kearns’ record-setting day lifts S-GI over Amherst in 44-18 victory By Dave DeLuca SPORTS REPORTER
In a season in which Devin White-Kearns has been the unquestioned catalyst to Springville’s offense, he still was able to save his best for last. The Springville-GI senior quarterback was spectacular in a recordsetting performance that led Springville to a 44-18 win over Amherst to finish the season 6-3, the program’s most wins in a season since 2004. White-Kearns ran for a career-high 189 yards and two touchdowns to eclipse the 1,000-yard mark for the season. He becomes the first quarterback to reach the 1,000-yard milestone in school history and finishes with 1,473 yards, good for eighth all-time in Springville history. “It means a lot to me,” White-Kearns said. “I’ve always dreamt of getting to this point and it’s just amazing that it’s come to life. It’s real.” White-Kearns came into the game needing 170 yards to reach 1,000 and at halftime, it seemed like a long shot. White-Kearns had just 28 yards and Springville’s offense had turned the ball over four times on four fumbles, as Amherst led 12-8 at the half. As the third quarter began, White-Kearns took over. The quest for 1,000 went from bleak to obtainable after the 6-foot, 150-pound senior pulled the ball on veer option to the right, reversed field and outran Amherst’s defense for an 83-yard touchdown, the second longest run of his career. From there, it was just a matter of time before White-Kearns reached it, and it came to fruition on

Springville’s Devin White-Kearns, top, rushed for 189 yards behind a stout offensive line and eclipsed 1,000 yards on the season. an 8-yard run in the fourth quarter. “This program has a very rich and strong tradition of having really great backs, prolific backs, “Valent said. “We’ve had Connolly Cup winners...It’s just tremendous. He’s a special player; he’s had a special season. I’m just really, really excited for him individually and also what he’s meant to us as a team.” White-Kearns ran behind an offensive line with just one senior on it in threeyear starting center Bryce Stedman. The four underclassman include, juniors Pat Hannon, Josh Ball and Greyson Louth and sophomore Johnny Domes. “It’s crazy, you give him a little hole, he’ll hit and
go for a touchdown,” Hannon said. Along with making history with his legs, White-Kearns accomplished something that hasn’t happened in Springville in 44 years with his arm. White-Kearns completed 6 of 9 passes for 187 yards and a school record tying four touchdowns to three different receivers. White-Kearns now shares the record with Steve DeLisle who threw four touchdowns against Pioneer in 1970. Senior wide receiver Devin Pazzuti hauled in a 16-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. WhiteKearns then tossed three second-half touchdowns, a 39-yarder to junior Kyle Warner and a pair of strikes
to junior Bryce Szudzik, a 35- and a 39-yarder, respectively. “That felt pretty good,” White-Kearns said. “They didn’t even have a safety and all of their linebackers were pressed up so we just went over the top on them.” With White-Kearns’ six total touchdowns against Amherst, he finishes the season with 27 (20 rushing, seven passing). Just three players have had more rushing touchdowns in a season at Springville, pair of Connolly Cup winners in Tony Baker (‘79, ‘80) and Chris George (‘89) and former NYS Player of the Year Mark Rendell (‘96).

The Kyle connection: Crotty, Warner bring athletic prowess to more than one field By Emyle Watkins SPORTS REPORTER
Two Springville boys have taken Griffins athletics by storm. Junior Kyle Warner and senior Kyle Crotty are both hardworking young men who share a passion for two huge sports: football and baseball. The duo has excelled at both, too. “You can coach a lot of things, but size and athleticism are not some of those things,” Springville football coach Rob Valenti said. “To be able to put two of the best athletes in the high school on the roster, it made us instantly better in all facets of the game.” Crotty had been playing football for many years, while Warner recently rejoined the program after having not played since

eighth grade. Nevertheless, Warner feels he has had a successful season back on Pop Warner Field. “I feel like it was a good year,” Warner said. “And we still have to work to do for next year, but it was great to be back.” Warner has made several standout plays being back on the football field. In Springville’s homecoming game against Pioneer earlier this season, the junior sacked his cousin and Panthers quarterback Austin Kossow. His older counterpart, Crotty, has had a largely tenacious and impressive final season in the Springville football program. Crotty’s ability to catch the deep ball has been one of his best assets this season. Against Newfane last week, he caught a 56-yard pass from White-Kearns. His rushing
skills are also a important factor in his skill as a football player. In the Pioneer game, he carried seven times for 50 yards. Crotty was also named WGRZ Player of the Week twice in one season. Crotty finds his inspiration for his work in Springville’s history. “Every team around the country looks at each other as brothers, that’s just how football is,” Crotty said. “But I also think Springville is special with the history; that we have all these great teams and player[s]. You want to live up to what those players and teams were.” The Springville varsity football program faced a lot of challenges this season, but came out strong. The work of Crotty and Warner is a big reason why.

Perfect on Pop: Griffins finish undefeated at home title,” senior Kyle Crotty said. “Springville’s back on the rise and I’m happy I can say I was a part of the 2014-15 team that got it back on track.” After a scoreless opening quarter, the Griffins took the lead in the second when By Emyle Watkins Crotty ran it in from 4 yards SPORTS REPORTER out. A failed 2-point conversion attempt had SGI up 6-0. Crotty scored the second earning an undefeated record at Pop Warner Field this touchdown of the game when he dashed 15 yards to the season. The Griffins improved to end zone. White-Kearns then rushed 5-3 overall with the win and finished undefeated on their for 65- and 26-yard touchhome field for the first time downs before finding Crotty in the end zone on a 56-yard since 1996 “We were undefeated on pass-and-catch for a score, [Pop Warner Field] for the giving the team a 32-0 lead first time since ’96 and the 96’ headed to the final frame. Colin Dewitt added an 11team was the best in Springville history, winning the state yard touchdown rush with
under a minute left to round out the scoring. Ian Baker added five rushes for 37 yards. Defensively, Springville was strong. Jobe Murphy had two interceptions and 11 tackles. Parker Rice and Josh Ball had sacks while John Domes and Bryce Szudzik chipped in nine and eight tackles, respectively. Jake Smith had a fumble recovery. Perhaps it helped to have another Griffin on the field against Newfane. This season, the boys had to play without a trusted teammate and good companion, Eric Garlock, who has been out on illness. The boys got to see their fellow Griffin step back out on to the field Friday night, as he escorted his teammates out as an honorary captain for the night’s game.

“He’s really dedicated himself to not only bettering himself physically, but mentally as well,” said Sean Bruso, a Springville assistant and quarterbacks coach. “He has a pretty good command. On his long touchdown run, he audibled and checked out of that play himself. When you have a kid who can do that, it’s gives certainly a different dynamic. He’s earned this.” Springville’s Jobe Fleming made a seven tackles, blocked a punt, forced a fumble and
recovered a fumble. Pazzuti also had seven tackles in the win. 8th grader Sean Barry was called up to varsity and record a tackle in his varsity debut. Springville has certainly been a second half team of late. In the Griffs’ last three games, they’ve outscored their opponents 138-34, however, they’ve done a lot of their damage after halftime, outscoring their opponents 84-6. “We need to alter to some things in the offseason so that we’re starting faster,” Valenti
said. “We’ve really been a second half team especially here in the back half of the season. We’ve really poured it on in the third quarter...That’s really been the difference. We’ve been close, we’ve been tight, but we’ve been able to break games open, stay ahead and pour it on.” Springville’s six wins is the most in a decade and Springville was able to finish undefeated at home on Pop Warner Field (4-0) for the first time since 1996, Springville’s
state championship team. And after starting the season 0-2, the Griffs finished the season winning five of their last six games. “We started off pretty rough, but we really battled back and came together as a team,” Pazzuti said. “As a senior, this last game is not what I was looking forward to. It’s bittersweet.” Pazzuti is one of 11 seniors on the team. Valenti has coached them in the program for four years, with this being the first as head coach. “They’re a great group, I’ve
had them for fours years so I have that bond; I feel really close to them,” Valenti said. “At the same time, they’re part of a year-one effort as we’ve tried to redefine Purple Reign and bring our program back to championship level. “Coach (Eric) Jantzi told them last week about the strides that have been made this season can really set the stage for future success; it’s so true. Our seniors that bought in should really be proud that they’ve been a part of this.”
Midget Griffins finish perfect Springville spikers still in sectionals
In their inaugural season since merging the former Springville Bills and Colts, the Springville Midget Griffins football team won the Cattaraugus County Midget Football League title with a 13-0 win over the Franklinville Panthers on Oct. 25. Not only did the team finish the regular season with a 6-0 record, it shut out both the Panthers and the Salamanca Warriors in the playoffs. At no point in the entire season was the team ever trailing.

Warner, Crotty look forward to baseball season Kyle from page B1 Warner hopes that next year as a senior he can help his team to bring back the glory days Springville treasured in 1996 when they became champions. “I am confident we will be a championship-caliber team in the future,” Warner said. “We all have a huge responsibility for everything next year.” And as Crotty makes way for a new line of Springville football players, he said he will remember this season as a valued time in his life. “I believe that my final football season has gone better than I could ever imagine,” Crotty said. “Playing under the coaches that I’ve gotten to play under is great. I couldn’t have asked for a better season. We’ve had some tough losses but I truly believe that we
came together as a team and we’re leaving as brothers.” After the football season, Crotty and Warner look ahead to baseball come spring. And both put more than your regular amount of effort into that sport. Crotty has played for multiple baseball teams over the years, including the New Era Titans, Niagara Timberwolves, Eden Post 880 and the Springville Griffins. Likewise, Warner has put the effort in, playing for about 10 seasons consecutively for several teams, including New Era and the Griffins. Crotty’s work on the diamond has led to him recently committing to Niagara County Community College, where he will play for the Timberwolves.
“It’s just a really good place for me,” Crotty said. “I wish him well in his studies and would hope that he gets off to a strong start academically,” Valenti said. “I want nothing but success for him as he embarks on the next great chapter of his life. “In regards to baseball, he’s going to a very good JUCO program and I hope it provides him the opportunity to hone his craft, sharpen the mental side of the game and really grow on the diamond.” A versatile player, Crotty mainly pitches and plays short stop. Warner’s shared love for the sport is taking him great places, too. Both Crotty and Warner have been playing for Springville baseball since their respective freshman
years. Warner has had a deep passion for the game since childhood. “It’s so important because the feeling I get, it is so great. The diamond is somewhere I can go and escape everything,” Warner said. Warner, similarly to Crotty, also acts as a pitcher and also plays some center field for his teams. “Warner, he’s a very quiet, focused, hard working athlete,” Valenti said. “He’ll be busy with basketball and baseball, but I know he’ll be putting in his football time whenever he can. He’s the type of kid not to cut corners. I’d like to see him incorporate some dynamic lifting in the weight room not only for the ‘15 football season, but to see it help him on the mound and
at the plate in baseball.” Not only do the coaches hope for the boys to improve, but the boys believe that because of their baseball coach, Ron Tamraz, they not only have a chance at improving, but doing well in their league. “Tamraz has helped me more than anyone. He’s the best coach I’ve ever had and it’s sad for me to think that all I have is this last year with him,” Crotty said. “One last shot to go out on top with a division and section championship and maybe even a state title.” Crotty and Warner’s hard work and dedication have no rout helped influence the turnout of the 2014 football season. They’re hoping to see similar success on the diamonds come spring.

THE COLLEGE UB women clinch regular season MAC championship ••• Russell Cicerone was named MAC men’s soccer player of the week after leading UB to two wins last week. Cicerone, a sophomore who starred for the local FC Buffalo squad last summer, had two goals and two assists in a 4-0 win over St. Bonaventure and netted both goals in a win over Northern Illinois. He currently ranks second in the MAC with 10 goals and 23 points. The Bulls (5-8-2, 1-02) play a non-conference
game at West Virginia this weekend. ••• The Buffalo State women’s soccer team picked up a win over New Paltz and a draw against defending SUNYAC champion Oneonta to claim the No. 6 seed in the conference tournament. Gabrianna Boldinski (Kenmore East) had an assist in the 2-1 win over New Paltz. The Bengals will play at Fredonia on Saturday in the quarterfinals. Fredonia won 1-0 at Buffalo State on Oct. 4.

Courtney Mann had a special feeling about the University at Buffalo women’s soccer team all the way back in preseason training. She turned out to be right. UB clinched the MidAmerican Conference regular season championship last weekend with a 2-0 victory over Miami (Ohio). Mann, a Frontier graduate and fourth-year starter in the midfield, was one of eight seniors honored on the field at UB Stadium prior to the game. “What a tremendous accomplishment for the girls,” UB coach Shawn Burke said. “I am so
proud of their effort and to clinch against one of the top teams in the MAC says a lot about our team.” The Bulls (12-2-3, 8-0-2 MAC) will look to finish unbeaten in conference play for the first time ever when they host Akron on Thursday (Oct. 30). UB will enter the MAC championship tournament as the No. 1 seed and host a quarterfinal game Sunday at UB Stadium. Riding a nine-game unbeaten streak, UB has also jumped up to 47th in the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index, a high watermark for the program. “Our current RPI ranking is recognition for all their hard work and dedication to attain our ultimate goal of an NCAA
Tournament appearance,” Burke said. UB last won a MAC regular season title in 2000 but has never won the MAC tournament or qualified for the NCAA Tournament. Burke is in his first season as UB’s head coach after five seasons as an assistant. When Burke first joined the UB program after two years on the men’s staff at Canisius, he made recruiting Mann one of his first priorities. Mann, one of the Bulls senior captains, has provided steady leadership throughout the season. “In eight years of coaching in college, she is one of the best athletes I’ve worked with,” Burke said. “She literally never takes a day off. Not in
training, or in games. For the past four years, one centerpiece has been her being in that lineup every day.” Other locals on the UB roster included sophomore defender Rachel Cook (Williamsville South) and senior goalkeeper Sarah Moore (Orchard Park). Freshman goalkeeper Laura Dougall has a goals-against average of 0.36, a .915 saver percentage and 11 shutouts, ranking first in the MAC and in the top five nationally in all three categories. Sophomore Katie Roberts leads the MAC with 10 goals and 22 points. Celina Carrero has six goals, including three game-winners, and 17 points.

Bulls fall in Wood’s first game as head coach By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
Changing coaches couldn’t reverse the course of the University at Buffalo’s football season. And neither could a standout game from senior linebacker Adam Redden (St. Francis). After firing head coach
Jeff Quinn and promoting offensive coordinator Alex Wood, the Bulls had their worst offensive performance of the season Saturday in a 20-13 home loss to Central Michigan. UB (3-5, 1-3) has now lost three straight in the Mid-American Conference and must win its final four regular season games to become bowl eligible.
The Bulls gained just 38 yards rushing on the day. Running back Anthone Taylor had a season-low 25 yards after coming into the game ranked 10th in the country in rushing yards. “They rendered us to be one-dimensional offensively, and when that happens, it’s tough to win,” Woods said. Redden, who grew up in
Buffalo and Amherst, did his best to keep the Bulls in the game. The senior linebacker had 10 tackles (3.5 for loss), to sacks, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery to earn MAC East defensive player of the week honors. Redden created a turnover on his first sack that led to UB’s first touchdown after the Bulls had fallen be-
hind 14-0 in the early going. A third-team all-MAC pick as a junior, Redden is on his way to earning allconference honors again this season. He leads the MAC in tackles for loss with 12 and is second with three forced fumbles. He has 55 tackles this year and a team-high five sacks. Quarterback Joe Licata (Williamsville South)
threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns Saturday. He passed Joe Freedy to move into fourth in school history with 5,994 career passing yards. The Bulls play next Wednesday at Ohio. UB’s remaining home games at both weeknight matchups, Nov. 11 against Akron and Nov. 19 against Kent State.
Bengals lose to Utica, need win this week to regain first place By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER
The Buffalo State football team’s NCAA Tournament aspirations took a major hit Saturday with a home loss to Utica. Off to their best start since 1999 and sitting atop the Empire 8 standings for the first
time, the Bengals turned the ball over three times in the 31-21 loss. Buffalo State (5-2, 3-2) now visits nationally-ranked St. John Fisher needing a win to regain first place in the Empire 8 standings. The conference champion automatically qualifies for the NCAA Tournament. Another loss would also likely take the Bengals out of con-
sideration for an at-large berth. Mike Doherty (Kenmore East) led the Buffalo State offense with five catches for 165 yards and a 40-yard touchdown that gave the Bengals an early 7-0 lead. Utica went up 24-7 by halftime before John Alessandra (Kenmore East) recovered a fumble that led to a Rich Pete touchdown,
bringing the Bengals within 10 points. Quarterback Kyle Hoppy (Orchard Park) fumbled on Buffalo State’s next possession, however, and Utica would take advantage of the opportunity to push its lead up to 31-14. Dan Serignese relieved Hoppy at quarterback in the fourth quarter and connected with Doherty on a 50-yard
gain before finding Ryan Carney (Olean) for an 8-yard touchdown pass that brought the Bengals within 31-21 with 7:16 remaining. But Buffalo State couldn’t get any closer, and in the process, gave up pole position in the Empire 8 title race. St. John Fisher, coached by Lockport native Paul Vosburgh, is coming off a 61-0 win over Alfred State. James
Chambers (Lockport) scored his third touchdown of the season in the win, and Sammy Hasan (Williamsville South) recovered a fumble in the end zone for a score. The Cardinals are ranked 15th in the latest D3football. com poll. Buffalo State is no longer receiving any votes after getting top 25 consideration the past two weeks.

Pheasant take to flight in WNY Sportsmen in Western New York have many hard choices to consider in autumn. These include Lake Erie perch fishing, bonanza trophy bass fishing, small game hunting, the big game archery season for deer and bear, and we have an annual additional enjoyable outdoor offering that includes pheasant hunting. Pheasant hunting is an age-old hunting ritual in New York state, especially for many WNY hunters who allocate special time to participate. Annually, about 30,000 adult pheasants are raised at the Richard E. Reynolds game farm in Ithaca and released just prior to, and during, the fall pheasant hunting season. An additional 60,000 birds are raised from day-old pheasant hatchlings by 4H youth bird managers with funding from the Erie County Federation of Sportsmen and other organizations. The hand-raised birds are released all across NYS on both state and private lands open to public hunting. Harwood Lake Multiple Use Area is one of the designated sites for pheasant stocking, which occurs a few days before the season begins. Each year when the NYS Department of Conservation announces the number of pheasants that will be released in WNY locations, local East Aurora native, Jack Maeder, joins the army of pheasant hunters to apply for a permit to hunt the colorful and palatable birds. NYSDEC conducts a Small Game Hunter Survey that shows about 23,000 hunters harvest over 50,000 pheasants statewide– many areas have wild pheasants– with hunters spending almost 106,000 days afield annually. Further, the most recent U.S. Fish and Wildlife survey from 2006 shows small game hunters spend approximately $600 per person per year, adding millions of dollars to the state economy. Among Maeder’s favorite pheasant hunting spots is Harwood Lake Multiple Use Area, a 301 acre wildlife management area with a 38 acre pond located near Franklinville, in Cattaraugus County, which was constructed in 1965 as a cooperative venture with New York and Federal Soil Conservation Service. The area is part of the Ischua Creek small watershed protection plan and offers attractive retired farmland, now public, with rolling hills and fields, perfect for wildlife management that include pheasants. For opening day hunting at Harwood, which was Oct. 15, a special permit is required through a random drawing for applications submitted to the Region 9 DEC office by postcard. Maeder and his son, Erik, or one of his grandsons, have hunted for NYS pheasant on opening day for the past 19 years. The same type of permit is required for the Zoar Valley MUA in Erie Coun-

ty, where the Maeders also hunt. Time period offerings for both areas include sunrise to sunset. After opening day, a permit is not required for the season, which runs through Nov. 14 this year. Using their trusted over/ under 12-guage shotguns equipped with No. 5 shot, the Maeder team was lucky this year, bagging two birds during their morning hunt. With an infectious ear-toear grin, the elder Maeder says, “Pheasant hunting on a clear day in warm weather, like this year, with a good dog and a best friend, my son, is about as good as life can ever get! I just love it!” After some coaxing, Maeder agreed to share his tasty pheasant pot pie recipe, it goes like this: Take one skinned pheasant cut into individual parts like a chicken, add to 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker that includes one bay leaf, three cloves of chopped garlic, a half-onion, chopped and one chopped stalk of celery for 10 minutes at high pressure. Remove and debone the bird, then melt 2 tablespoons butter in a skillet to saute four chopped shallots, one sliced carrot, two sliced stalks celery and a half-can of kernel corn. Add a can of cream of chicken soup, thin with the water from the pressure cooker, add salt, pepper and thyme to taste. Mix the chopped pheasant into the skillet for a few minutes, then pour the mix into three baking dishes. Cover with crust pastry. Paint the pastry with egg/water wash and bake at 425 degrees until the crust is browned, about 15 minutes. Maeder likes this dish with cranberry relish. The secret is out, geez, I’m hungry! Maeder improves his shotgun shooting proficiency with new and old friends at East Aurora Fish and Game Club located on Luther Road, where in the summer, use of trap and skeet fields is open to the public every Tuesday from 4 p.m. to sunset. WNY outdoors with friends can be fun in so many ways! Happy Hal-

loween! Outdoor Friends Pass In the last several weeks, WNY has experienced the misfortune of losing several great mentors of the outdoors. My good friend and the founder of the NYS Erie County Free Youth Lifetime License program, Joe Jemiolo Jr., 70 years young, passed away several weeks ago. Joe, a North Collins resident, taught many of us the details of Great Lakes fishing tournaments, but more importantly, Joe was a key player in the Teach Me To Fish program in Erie County, sharing his knowledge of fishing knots, lures, techniques and his general love of sharing the fun of the outdoors with kids. Joe succumbed to several issues during a recent intensive care hospital stay. The WNY outdoors world will forever miss Joe, but he left his mark of outdoor goodness with thousands of sportsmen and he will live on with all of us in destiny, and all of this friends in the Boston Conservation Club, Southtowns Walleye Association, Erie County Federation of Sportsmen, Lake Erie Charter Boat Association and many other organizations. Farther north, a man who shared his love of the WNY outdoors and for fishing with new lures with many outdoor column readers in Tonawanda and Lockport, and through seminars all over Erie County, Ken Sprenger, also passed away recently. Ken was a member of the NYS Outdoor Writers Association and the Outdoor Writers Association of America. Ken was 87-years-old and fought for many outdoor issues. He was not afraid to be confronted about his position on anything outdoors, a true leader, will be missed by many. Fishing Report Lake Erie and Upper Niagara River bass are going strong on their fall feed on the drop-offs in Lake Erie and in the traditional drift areas of the Upper Niagara, tube jigs and crankbaits are both effective. Yellow perch in Lake Erie are still “on the feed” in 55 to 65 feet of water, with some good catch reports from 45 feet depths north of Sturgeon Point – emerald shiner minnows are still the hot bait. Note that the Ferry Street bridge is closed to traffic for 12 months. Biggest of the year musky action is also heading upward as area waters cool down and all species ready for winter. Ten Lives Club cat rescue and adoption group held its 13th annual “Eat a Dog, Save a Cat” hot dog fundraiser at George’s Hot Dogs with the proceeds of all hot dog purchases that evening benefitting the non-profit cat rescue organization. Between hot dog sales, 50/50, theme baskets and their silent auction the group made over $1,800 that evening. For the past five years, Tracey Bosinski from Precious Ones Day Care in Hamburg, collects donations for the cats from their staff and customers and walks the wagon down from her home to present them to the group. Canal Street Band to perform at SCA With three voices, 55 strings and a pair of cow bones, The Canal Street String Band will put a brand-new shine on some seriously fun old American music at their performance at Springville Center for the Arts' Mongerson Theater on Nov. 7 at 8 p.m. Their sound includes fiddle tunes, sea shanties, cowboy songs, canal ditties, mountain music, western swing and originals too, with banjo, fiddle, twin mandolins, string bass, dobro, bones, guitar, octave mandolin, and three-part harmonies. Stellar musicianship combines with an undeniable sense of adventure and plenty of hokum to produce an irresistibly good time. The audience has fun, too. Phil Banaszak plays fiddle, mandolin and guitar and
sings. A New York state fiddle champion and member of the North American Fiddlers Hall of Fame, Barnaszal has the lowest- pitched singing voice ever, and a world-class mustache to boot. Dave Ruch, a full-time musician/performer/music researcher/teaching artist, sings and plays mandolin, guitar, banjo, octave mandolin, bones, spoons, jaw harp and probably other things too. Jim Whitford, a Buffalo Music Hall of Famer and sideman to the stars such as Peter Case, Tarbox Ramblers, Gurf Morlix and Linda McRae, rocks the string bass as well as playing dobro and guitar and singing out with all he’s got. Advance tickets are available at SpringvilleArts.org or by phone at 592-9038 and at the door.

A view of some of the booths at a previous Christmas in the Country. A favorite Western New York tradition, the Christmas in the Country Holiday Artisan Market will celebrate its 30th season when it returns to the Hamburg Fairgrounds Nov. 6-9. And as it has done every year since its very first year of existence, Christmas in the Country will provide a grand platform for local charities to raise money. Throughout the 30-year history of Christmas in the Country, giving back to the community has always been an integral part of the event. This year, participating nonprofit groups will include Gerard Place, Churches in Action, Hamburg Eden Animal Rescue Team, Variety — The Children’s Charity of Buffalo and the Hamburg Presbyterian Church. “Helping those in need has always been who we are, both as a company and people of this community, said Sally Kaczynski, founder of Christmas in the Country. Participating charities use different means to generate donations — from selling shopping bags to patrons, to holding raffles, to an artisan-donated silent auction. “The charities and
their many volunteers are found throughout the event and they work very hard this weekend and throughout the year for their wonderful causes. We are honored to be a small part of raising over $1.4 million dollars throughout the history of our events. This year, Christmas in the Country will welcome more than 400 artisans spread out over five buildings. Attendees will find unique handcrafted creations made in the USA, i n c l u d i n g h o m e d Ê c o r, gourmet foods and wine, original music, trendsetting jewelry, hand-poured aromatic candles, children’s toys and clothing, stylish pottery, original wall art, gifts for pets and holiday gift items galore. In 2013, Christmas in the Country was recognized as the No. 2 Contemporary and Classic Artisan Market in the nation by Sunshine Artist, the leading publication in the art and craft event industry. The event has ranked either No. 1 or No. 2 in the nation for the past 11 years. Celebrating its 30th anniversary and drawing almost 60,000
visitors over four days and featuring only handmade products made in the United States, the event is widely recognized today as the preeminent holiday artisan market in North America! Christmas in the Country will run from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Nov. 6 and 7, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Nov. 8, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 9 at the Fairgrounds in Hamburg. Discount tickets are available through Wednesday, Nov. 5, at select locations through Erie County. For a complete list of locations visit www.wnypremierpromotions.com. For more than 30 years, Premier Promotions has produced high quality, extremely successful artisan events including Springtime in the Country, Christmas in the Country, Christmas in the Country-Erie and Yuletide in the Country. The events are consistently ranked among the Top 100 artisan shows in America by Sunshine Artist magazine. Last year, more than 90,000 visitors attended these events purchasing more than $4.5 million in high quality, handcrafted goods from juried artists and artisans.
