Division I-bound Dallas: Canisius junior and Springville resident commits to Monmouth By Dave DeLuca SPORTS REPORTER
When the phone rang, Dan Dallas, a Springville resident and Canisius High School junior, had no idea who was calling or what they wanted. Now, that very phone call will determine where Dallas goes to college. Just seven days after participating in showcase, Monmouth University, a Division I school in New Jersey, offered him a baseball scholarship. A few days later, Dallas verbally committed. “I was shocked,” Dallas said. “I wasn’t expecting an offer right away from them, so it was pretty cool…It feels really great to have it off my shoulders. I can play free, I guess you could say. I’m excited to get the process over with and to know where I’m going in the couple years to continue my career.” Dallas, a first baseman and left-handed pitcher, picked Monmouth over potential offers from Niagara University and Canisius College. Fordham and Winthrop also were interested but they came later in the recruiting process and Dallas had already made his decision. Dallas won’t sign his National Letter of Intent (official commitment) until his senior year at Canisius, but he will be honoring his verbal commitment to Monmouth, even if more scholarship offers come. “I’m going to take it with great respect and honor when other schools are looking at me,” Dallas said,” but I’m going to let them know that I’ve already given a verbal to Monmouth. I’m always open to what they think, but I want to keep my word and honor my commitment

Dan Dallas helped Canisius to its fourth Georgetown Cup championship in six years last spring. He recently committed to Monmouth University to play Division I baseball. to Monmouth.” Dallas was extremely intrigued by Monmouth’s campus and it’s location. “It’s really condensed, “Dallas said. “Everything is right there. They’re right on the beach and they’re a 20-minute boat ride from New York City. It’s going to be nice to get away and establish myself away from Buffalo. With the coaching staff, the campus and the location, I’m really excited about spending four years there.” Dallas helped Canisius become Georgetown Cup champions for the fourth time in six years, when he allowed just one run and struck out six over five innings to lead the Crusaders to a 2-1 win over St. Joe’s
last June. He went on to make second team AllCatholic. He played junior varsity baseball at Springville as a seventh and eighth grader, and was called up for the varsity playoffs both seasons. He transferred to Canisius prior to his freshman year and became just the second freshman to ever start on varsity in Canisius coach Brian Tenney’s 23 years coaching the program. The following season, Dallas became Tenney’s youngest captain in his tenure. “I think college coaches can see that he’s mature beyond his years,” Tenney said. “He carries himself like a professional ballplayer. He’s business on the
field, he’s business in the dugout, even off the field and away from the game. On the field, he’s a nonstop worker. “He just keeps working harder and harder to make himself better and the team better. He exudes confidence, he exudes intensity and exudes the love of the game of baseball. You combine all that stuff, it’s a no-brainer that schools are knocking on his door.” Dallas has made a commitment to the weight room in the past year to get bigger, faster stronger. He’s also been focusing on hitting off a tee and doing cage work at Strike Zone, a facility in Niagara-Wheatfield with batting cages. “My wife (Jeanne) and
myself feel thankful that Dan has this opportunity, “said Dallas’ father, Dan Sr. “We’re very fortunate and excited at the same time. He’s going to get a great education and play at a very high level of baseball. “His persistence to hard work and dedication has got him to this point. It’s been his drive, along with some tough love on my part and his mother’s part to tell him to get his butt downstairs and lift.” Dallas thanked Tenney from Canisius and Mark Gabriele from the Niagara Purple Eagles showcase team for coaching him and making him a better player. “Those two coaches are a huge blessing in my life,” Dallas said. “I cannot thank
them enough for their guidance and undivided support.” Dallas also thanked John Opfer for pushing him in training and most of all, his family. “Without a family like this, I’d probably be lost in this world, ”Dallas said. “My mom and dad’s support is always there, especially my mom with school. My dad has always been helping me on and off the field. And, I don’t know where I’d be without my sister. She’s always driving me around and giving me moral support, one of the best sisters anyone could ask for.”

S-GI spikers’ strong season comes to end in semifinals
By Emyle Watkins SPORTS REPORTER
DAVE DELUCA
Jenna Schunke and the Springville girls volleyball team beat Fredonia but fell to Southwestern in the Section VI playoffs.
The Springville girls volleyball team was nearly undefeated during the regular season. Its playoff season was no different. The Lady Griffins defeated Fredonia 3-1 in the Class C quarterfinals and fell to Southwestern 3-0 in the Class C semifinals. Though their success in the regular season and their strong battle in the playoffs were remarkable, the girls have remained humble, head coach Kristin Hughey said. “This team clearly had a lot of talent, but didn’t let it go to their heads,” she said. “Each girl worked hard at each practice because she wanted
to improve to contribute to her team. They set a goal of division champs in August, and worked to realize it all season long.” The captains of the team, Kristin Baker and Jenna Schunke, not only lead the team, but they served as role models when it came to leadership and humility. “People like Kristin Baker and Jenna Schunke have inspired our team so much that I think it will inspire us for next year,” junior Sidney Schindler said. “They have brought so many great strengths to our team. I am sure going to use them to drive my team next year.” Both girls, not only strong in character, are dominant players on the court. Baker’s talent on the court showed in the playoffs. Whenever a ball came close, she’d be on the floor making the save. She had 19 assists and six aces in the playoff tilt against Fredonia, and then in the semifinals against Southwestern, she chipped in 11 aces and
three kills. Her counterpart Schunke was no different. Schunke had some of the most essential kills in the playoffs, finishing with 11 against Fredonia and four against Southwestern. Both players, Schindler said, were strong for the team “because they had to be.” “They had to show us that we had to get over our fears and play the game we know how to,” Schindler said. “Even when we would get down on ourselves they were right there to pull us back up. I know they are very proud of us that we made it this far, proud that we made it to playoffs.” Schunke and Baker have no doubt been essential to their team’s success on the court, but have also been inspiring to next year’s seniors. They were the glue that helped the team bond, which ultimately helped lead to their success in both the regular season and playoffs.

Rod, Gun & Game: The fear of hunting with a firearm By Forrest Fisher OUTDOOR COLUMNIST
Many sportsmen have gone through one moment of discovery that unveiled their biggest fear for the invitation to hunt deer with a firearm. It was a moment when thoughts of suffering, shoulder bruises and eyebrow scars would test durability as a bonafide applicant to be accepted among other deer hunters. That fear, of course, is shooting practice with a firearm for the first time, or shooting a new firearm. It is about being tough enough in your mind to endure the largely anticipated pain from that woeful kick of recoil induced by the firearm of choice, a shotgun or a rifle. My dad started me out with a BB-gun in the beginning and there was no kick, just a little “phhssst” sound, and you could visually see the BB flying out the barrel. It was in the time of original Daisy Red Ryder air rifles. Today we have 1,300 feet per second BB and pellet rifles and we have new technological

efficiency helping pave the way with air guns. Dad then offered the next step into the world of safe firearm shooting with a .22 caliber single action rifle, a Marlin model. I was nervous and ever so cautious when I was about to take that first target shot. This was a real bullet. I could get hurt, or worse, hurt someone else. Dad instructed me that before ever putting my finger on the trigger, to look downrange beyond the target. “Look through the iron sights, do you see anything there son?” He would ask. “Yep, dad, I see a lot of grass and then that big hill behind the can we are using for the target,” I answered. “OK then, take your safety off and sight the can, then squeeze the trigger real gentle and see how it goes. Don’t be afraid, it’ll be OK son.” Little did I know, dad handed me the gun without a bullet in the chamber for that first official sight-in with a real firearm. I listened to every word he said, then pulled the trigger. The gun jumped! I jumped! Dad was chuckling quietly, he looked at
me and smiled like he always did when he knew something more that I was about to learn. I yelped, “What happened?” Then we both laughed so hard. Yep, I jerked back in anticipation of the kick I was about to receive, but there was none. “You can never hit anything shooting like that son, just relax when you aim and shoot and you will usually hit your target. You’ll get use to the noise and the kick.” I loved those lessons with dad. I trusted him and knew I was always safe with him because of moments like this. Finally, dad handed me one .22 caliber bullet and I opened the chamber by pulling back the bolt and inserted the round. This time, “I knew” the gun WAS really loaded. This time the instructions were different. Dad said, “OK son, now sight down to your target, slide your safety off, and before your take your shot, exhale, hold your breath for a moment and fully relax, then squeeze the trigger gently.” Bang! The gun fired, the target pop can went flying and sent back a “cling” sound before it fell over.
“Great shot!” Dad said. That was nearly 60 years ago, but you know, I can still recall that moment in time. I was feeling so good right then. The target was only about 25 feet away, so it was not much of a challenge, but it was a mark of success. As time went on, I got older and was ready for deer hunting with a shotgun. I moved up from the small game firearm to dad’s 16-gauge Mossberg shotgun. Not to confuse me, dad used the same style of shotgun as the .22 rifle, it was a bolt action model. Nothing fancy about it. One shotgun shell in, safe off, then aim and fire. Same theory of use and same safety rules. It was not expensive either and met the family budget. We went to the range and guess what? Instantly, I had the same fear of shooting this new firearm as with the .22 rimfire. For everyone, fear of guns is a good thing. Would it hurt me? Was it safe? Was I big enough to do this? I was 16 years old and scared. I’m being honest. Without much fanfare, dad walked me through the same steps as before. Of course I was
bigger now, heavier and taller, but when I fired that shotgun for the first time, I expected pain, I jerked back, winced and missed the target. Dad gave me that same old smile again, guess I knew it was coming and again knew I was about to learn something. “Just pull that big gun into your shoulder son, don’t leave any space there, you have a shirt and jacket on, that’s padding enough to keep you from getting much recoil damage. It’s gonna kick, but just aim, breathe and exhale, hold, aim, relax and squeeze the trigger.” OK, I did that and not surprisingly, I hit the bullseye on the target. Guess I knew I would, dad said so. I did it over about 10 times and hit the bullseye every time. “I think you are ready to go deer hunting son,” dad shared. I sure miss those days! Dad has been gone for almost four years now. Shotguns and center-fire rifles all kick more than air guns. Keep fear out of the picture, keep respect for all firearms, follow the simple steps to shooting accurately and be sure of your target and
beyond. Be sure to practice with your deer hunting firearm of choice, you must do that. If you shoot the firearm at practice and it is too much recoil for you, there is another simple option. Get a smaller firearm! If you tried a 12 gauge shotgun, move to a 20 gauge, it has less recoil. If that is still too much, switch to gas-feedback 20 gauge, there is virtually no kick at all. Rifles are made the same way. Bolt action shotguns and rifles kick more, gas-feedback models kick far less. Talk to your gun store proprietor, trust their opinion, they know all the choices to help you be the best you can be. Understanding the firearm choices, the fear of hunting is minimized. Concerns switch now to boots, gloves, binoculars, hunting stand, keeping warm and that long list of fun-topick choices, fun choices. This weekend, Cabela’s Cheektowaga is offering a “Deer Camp” weekend for hunters with seminars on both weekend days, including a live deer butchering demonstration for newcomers. See you there!
Dallas’ family is deep-rooted in baseball, cousin plays for Arizona Diamondbacks “Dallas” from page B1
Dallas comes from a talented gene pool as his cousin is Arizona Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Dallas and his family go to watch him play once a year. In Boston, Dallas was able to go on the field, meet the players and get autographs. In Pittsburgh, he sat in the dugouts and watched batting practice. “He’s always influenced me since I was a kid, ”Dallas said of Goldschmidt, who was the runner-up in the MVP voting last season. “When we would go down to visit him in Texas, he’d be up at 6 a.m. hitting baseballs in the garage. “His work ethic is just ridiculous. Having him be a pro and be runner up in the MVPvoting, it’s just like, ‘wow.’It shows that hard work pays off.” Pro scouts will likely be taking notice of Dallas in the coming years. Just two years ago WNY had two players drafted out of high school. Clarence’s right-handed pitcher Mark Armstrong was selected in the third round by the Cincinnati Reds and Amherst’s switchhitting catcher Jonah Heim was drafted in the fourth round by the Baltimore Orioles. Being a highly-touted recruit with two high school seasons certainly bodes well for Dallas’ future.

Dan Dallas said that his cousin, Paul Goldschmidt, an Arizona Diamondback, has been a positive influence for him.
“I’m just going to let it play out and work my hardest, ”Dallas said. “If it happens, it happens. Either way, I just always want to try my best and give a 110 percent.” Tenney was a first baseman at Duke University and after graduation, he had tryouts with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Atlanta Braves. He can, possibly, see the Major League Baseball draft in Dallas’future. “Let me tell you, if he proceeds on the course he’s on, he’s got a good shot,” Tenney said of Dallas being drafted. “I’ve seen a lot of kids plateau after having success like Dan. He’s a different mold. He wants to make himself better and better. “I’ve seen kids get drafted over the years from our area; I have to sit here and say, ‘he’s not too different than some of those guys.’ With that being said, I don’t want to add any pressure, but if he continues this course, I can see that draft potential...” For now, he’s just a junior in high school and excited about a future that is waiting for him at Monmouth. “I’ve always dreamt of this day, “Dallas said. “For it to be here, for me to be committing to college, it’s just a dream come true.”

“Volleyball brought us together. It made old friendships grow and many new ones begin,” Schindler said. “It started something so passionate that we all will never forget.” Overall, the Lady Griffins are proud of their accomplishments and hard work this season. “I’m very proud of how the team did in the playoffs,” Hughey said. “Being seeded in first place gave us home-court advantage against Fredonia. Our girls played some of the best ball of their season during that match. It was exciting to watch and exhilarating to be apart of. One of our goals by the end of the year was to be division champs and we achieved that goal by working together as a team. It was an honor to walk onto that court every day with every girl on this team and I will never forget the memories we made. It truly was a pleasure to have a team like this.”

Holmes Elementary students take part in exclusive event Thanks in large part to the NFL’s Fuel Up to Play 60 program and the Buffalo Bills, 30 students from Holmes Elementary School were able to connect with Bills players at an exclusive Hometown Huddle event to learn about the importance of good nutrition and physical activity. Not only that, they each had their picture taken with wide receiver Sammy Watkins and linebacker Preston Brown and walked away with $100 Wegmans gift cards, apparel, autographs and more. Representatives from the Dairy Council met the students at the school and gave them Fuel Up to Play 60 shirts and Bills hats to wear to the event. A school bus took them to the Wegmans grocery store in
Blasdell, where they met with the 14 players who represent the Buffalo Bills Rookie Club. Dan LiBurd, the Buffalo Bills nutritionist, taught the students about good nutrition, and they took part in some fun physical activities. They each had their picture taken with Watkins and Brown. They were able to meet all 14 Bills rookies and get their autographs. Finally, they had the chance to move through the store, learning about healthy food groups and shopping with $100 Wegmans gift cards they received and the help of the Bills players. Holmes Elementary School was chosen for the Hometown Huddle with help from Kim Roll, food service director for the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda UFSD, and

and our kids with their grocery bags — these fourth and fifth graders who were learning about nutrition — it was so exciting,” Roll said. “Our kids were so good. I was so proud of them.” In addition to the NFL and the Bills, the Hometown Huddle is supported by American Dairy Association and Dairy Council, and the United Way of Buffalo and Erie County. According to Fuel Up to Play 60, the Hometown Huddle is “a league-wide day of service designed to bring awareness and impact to the issue of youth health and fitness” and the event “aims to educate local youth on the importance of good nutrition through school meal programs as well as learning to navigate the grocery
store.” Fresh fruits and vegetables were a major topic at the Hometown Huddle and are a major focus this year at KenmoreTown of Tonawanda schools. In support of the newly revised wellness policy, which incorporates the 2010 Healthy, HungerFree Kids Act and Smart Snacks in Schools standards, the District has initiated a Fruit and Veggie of the Month program. The purpose of the program is to focus on one fruit and one vegetable each month so students can learn all about the nutritional benefits of, and best way to enjoy, each featured fruit and vegetable. Apples and Brussels sprout were featured in October and strawberries and squash will be featured in November.

Open enrollment starting Nov. 15
Open enrollment for health insurance through t h e N e w Yo r k S t a t e o f Health Marketplace, begins on Nov. 15. The Healthy Community Alliance is a navigator agency for the NY state of Health, the health insurance marketplace established to help New Yorkers obtain affordable health insurance. Appointments are being scheduled at the Gowanda location as well as 24 other locations across the Cattaraugus County. Call 532-1010 to schedule an appointment. The navigators have been trained to help individuals and families enroll in health insurance, including Child Health Plus, Medicaid and qualified health plans through the NY State of Health Insurance Marketplace. Navigators assist with entering all information into the online portal, determine eligibility based upon household size and income and identify if tax credits are available to help
reduce monthly premiums. The marketplace offers a wide variety of insurance plans to meet each applicant’s unique needs. Plans include metal tiers like platinum, gold, silver and bronze. These plans offer the same coverage but different premiums. For example, an individual who has diabetes may be a frequent flyer in the health system and may opt for a platinum plan with a larger monthly premium, but no co-pays or deductibles. However, another individual may only need to access the health system for routine exams and wellness visits. This person may have the option of picking a bronze plan with a much lower monthly premium but with higher co-pays or deductibles. To make the enrollment process easy and convenient, support will be available in-person at 25 locations throughout Cattaraugus County, online and by phone.

Tyler Olrogg is holding one of the fish he caught while fly fishing in Montana Springville resident Tyler Olrogg, 16, and 11 other teenagers from around the country, were selected in June by the Big Horn River Alliance, to fly fish in the Big Horn River in southeastern Montana with professional guides for four days. Olrogg was selected after submitting an essay about his passion for fly fishing and why he would like to take part in the Bighorn River Youth Adventure. His sponsorship was provided by the Lake Erie Chapter of the Federation of Fly Fishers and facilitated his entry to the River Alliance. The federation’s mission is to advance the art, science and sport of fly fishing as a way of fishing most consistent with the preservation and use of game fish resources of catch and release. For the past several years, in early June, the federation has also sponsored a youth fishing day at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve
in Depew, where they teach youngsters to tie flys, cast and fly fish. As a member of the local chapter, Olrogg has helped teach 36 youngsters fly fishing at this year’s camp. While at the Bighorn, Olrogg caught many trout, mostly browns ranging in size from 14 inches to 20 inches. Despite tough river conditions in late June because of this year’s record snow pack runoff, the fishing wasn’t a trout DisneyLand as the local guides had described. Olrogg came away with memories of a once in a lifetime trip. This allows him to make lifelong friends with other youth anglers with whom he had fished. His trip taught him many new techniques. The knowledge will help him, and in turn he will help others. The experience enhanced his interest in furthering a career in fisheries biology.

Tops Friendly Markets has announced that the company will offer military personnel and their immediate families an 11 percent discount off of their grocery bill on Veterans Day, Tuesday, Nov. 11. Customers should present proof of service that they, or an immediate family member are a U.S. veteran, active duty, reserve or retired military personnel to receive an
11 percent discount off their purchase. “The respect and gratitude we have for the people who serve and have served in the military is immeasurable,” said Frank Curci, Tops chairman, president and CEO. “We wanted to take action by giving back to our associates and customers who have courageously defended our country and made many sac-
rifices through their military service.” Tops is a longtime supporter of military associates and customers. The company’s actions include support of the American Veterans Tribute Traveling Wall, Honor Flight Missions, sending care packages for troops serving domestically and overseas, VA hospital visits and participation in veteran job fairs.
