Randolph repeats as Class D champion, defeats Franklinville/Ellicottville/West Valley By Nick Sabato SPORTS REPORTER

What better way to avenge the only loss of the season than in the sectional championship game? Franklinville/Ellicottville/ West Valley had that exact opportunity when they met Randolph in the Class D final at Ralph Wilson Stadium on Thursday night (Nov. 6). The only problem was that they fell to the perennial powerhouse, ironically, by the same score of 28-0 as the Cardinals won their third straight Section VI Class D title. Randolph seemed to be able to make plays when it appeared that the Eagles had them stopped all night, including the first score of the game. It looked as if the Eagles were going to stand tall on fourth down but quarterback Bryce Morrison was able to cap off a 14-play drive by diving in from four yards out. The key play of the game, though, came early in the second quarter as Franklinville/ Ellicottville/West Valley seemingly had Randolph backed up after it lost 13 yards on a fumble on an option play on first-and-goal. Morrison would work his magic once again, evading five would-be tacklers to find Derek Young on a 14-yard touchdown pass to go up 13-0. The senior signal caller would also score on a short run just before halftime to give his squad a 21-0 lead after a similar play to Young on a second-and-long. “That was tough,” said Franklinville/Ellicottville/ West Valley head coach Chad Bartoszek. “We had him wrapped up a couple of times. The kid is a hell of a player. They deserve their credit. They are the number one team in the state and they brought it today. Our kids played hard but we just didn’t get the result that we wanted.” Offensively, it was a strug-

and as a team, Franklinville/ Ellicottville/West Valley was only able to muster 69 yards on the ground. In total, Randolph held the Eagles to just 86 yards of total

offense and six first downs in what was a dominant defensive performance. “We didn’t get the cracks that we needed,” said Bartoszek. “When we did, we

didn’t block it correctly because they are a good team.” When the Eagles were finally able to move the sticks on offense, it quickly turned into a disaster as what was

shaping up to be a promising drive, stalled at the one-yard line.

The Springville varsity cross country team’s 2014 season was a strong one. Out of 36 runners on the team, 32 represented the school in races, and 22 of those runners were on varsity. Both boys and girls teams placed second in the division. “It makes for a nice season to be around a group

of positive people,” said head coach Chad Russell. This season, the girls team, which finished 4-1 in dual meets, improved greatly on its fourth-place finish in the division last year. In addition to finishing second in the league, the Lady Griffins ranked high in several invitationals. Most notably, the Grove City Invitational was among the most successful for the girls team. Several top ladies runners traveled to Pennsylvania, where the girls placed third overall.

Rod, Gun & Game: NYS big game season opens Saturday By Forrest Fisher OUTDOOR COLUMNIST

The wait is over! The New York State big game firearm season for whitetail deer and black bear will open this Saturday, Nov. 15, at sunrise, and run through Sunday, Dec. 7, at sunset. For hunters, there is no other such event that receives as much advance planning than the opening day of deer season in WNY. Our deer and bear populations are a great economic and recreational wildlife resource for New York. The nearly 700,000 licensed hunter group identifies that big game hunting is an important part of our outdoor heritage for so many folks. The general population is thankful to hunters who provide a valuable public service by maintaining wildlife populations at levels that are compatible with public interest and natural resources, providing for safer travel on our roadways. At hunting camps in our southern tier areas, the days before the season bring hunters to camp early to check stands and assure safe shooting lanes. By Friday night, there is extra excitement in the air. Newcomers to the sport usually do not sleep well the night before, with dreams of a deer opportunity after daylight. Wind-up alarm clocks begin to sound off around 5 a.m. as lights turn on across WNY hilltops. Hunters hop out of their comfortable sleeping bags, scurry across chilly cabin

floors to a welcome pot of great tasting, old-fashioned, percolated coffee; real coffee. Light switches are flicked on and gas lanterns brighten. Flashlights and candles, too, offer pre-dawn light, depending on your hunting camp situation. The grumbling low-frequency voice tones of elderly hunters sort of sound like those of a buck grunting his way through the morning woods in search of a doe. The recurring “thump” heard across the cabin usually means a new log has just been tossed into the wood stove. The sounds of “camp flavor” are welcome and special, because somehow you feel assured that all is well here among your hunting family. The wood stove and the extra dry air, the sound of humble morning chatter between coffee sipping, opening day laughter and jokes, side bets for biggest deer and the same bull-tales that smelly old men retell every year about this time, are all somehow a special deal for the many who have been there and will never miss an opening day of deer hunting season. Deer camp offers those kinds of special times. Hunting camp is an unforgettable experience! One thing to remember is that most folks usually eat too well when in deer camp, so when you head into the hunting forest, wood-side restrooms are easy to find, but comfortable dry leaves are not. Take a small roll of tissue or toilet paper with you

FORREST FISHER

Beverly Ruhland of Wales, New York, has enjoyed several big deer experiences during the last two weeks of early archery season, which is also marks the brand new NYS crossbow season. in a re-sealable plastic bag. It’s good to be prepared! I keep my gun shells in the same bag, that way they are dry too and I can’t forget the really important stuff! Minutes later, even 80-year-old hunters turn into youngsters, as warm clothes and layers are in place and ready to hunt. Getting dressed often looks like a group wrestling match, with all hands on deck at once. Everyone is working to reach their hunting stand by a half-hour before sunrise, not everyone will make it there in time, but 30 minutes after sunrise

works too! The new NYS crossbow season (last two weeks of early archery season: Nov. 1 – 14) has brought many happy hunters back to the woods and started new interest in hunting for many others. I recently received a note from a hunter in Wales, Beverly Ruhland, who shared the excitement of her first day with her new Barnett crossbow in the woods last weekend. Ruhland says, “I went hunting today and it was so exciting! I was literally face to face with a big buck that had to be least an 8- or 10-pointer.

I was too scared to count his points, but he was so big! I was walking the woods and saw him a short distance away.” Continuing, Ruhland said, “I did take a shot with my new crossbow, but being so excited I didn’t pay much attention to the proper placement of my left hand. I pulled the trigger and the exiting string caught my thumb, sending the bolt awry. That stung my thumb! The big buck looked at me as I stood still and actually walked right toward me. I couldn’t believe it. He stopped about 5 yards away, stayed about 60 seconds staring right at

me. I closed my eyes and thought maybe he was going to spear me with his antlers. Then, thank God, I opened my eyes and he turned to slowly walk away. I was scared and shaking so bad!” Being a brave hunter, Ruhland admits, “My thumb was throbbing and still is. I really thought the deer was going to attack me. My husband, Bob, a retired Lake Ontario charter captain and avid deer hunter, is still laughing at my story. Even though I missed, I saw 11 different deer that day while sitting in my ground blind. There was another smaller buck, but not close enough to get a shot at him or at any of the others.” Ruhland is a daily church goer and says, “I’m hoping I can go out again tomorrow after morning mass. Maybe I’ll do better then.” Sounds like the crossbow season is being well accepted all across WNY. By the way, Bob Ruhland used his crossbow to harvest a big-body buck a few days before Beverly’s sore-thumb, big-deer encounter. Even during the firearm season, if you are hunting in close quarters to heavy brush and timber, the crossbow is a great way to consider hunting. Effective to about 30-40 yards (tops), the broad-tipped arrows (called bolts for a crossbow) offer a very clean kill and allow as much as a 20 percent increase in harvested venison meat. Crossbows during gun season, something to think about!

Randolph connects for 99-yard TD strike “Football” from page B1 On the first play of the next drive, Morrison found Young once again down the right sideline for a 99-yard touchdown pass. For Randolph fans, it was déjà vu, as it was shades of John Morgante finding Mason Burch on a 99-yard touchdown back in the 2010 Class D final. “That’s funny because when we were here in 2010, Pat Slater was the head coach and I was doing the defense,” said Randolph head coach Brent Brown. “We had that same situation and John Morgante hit Mason Burch for a 99-yard touchdown pass. So when that happened, the guy in my headset said, ‘should we beat Pat Slater’s record? So we called it and it worked.” While it is still the same old Randolph machine that has made them

two-time defending state champions, the Cardinals may look a little different. They still primarily want to run the ball, but with a quarterback like Morrison, they aren’t afraid to air it out either. Morrison finished 5 for 9 for 192 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for two more, and it was the passing game that propelled them past Franklinville/Ellicottville/Randolph for the second time this year. “The first time we played them I think the passing game was the difference as well,” said Brown. “I don’t know how many times we threw it tonight but some of them probably should have been sacks but they ended being big plays. We were worried about the weather because [Franklinville/ Ellicottville/West Valley] plays good defense. We

struggled to run the ball the first time we played them, so we anticipated that we may have trouble.” Musall had 11 total tackles in defeat, while Alex Delity added 10 for Franklinville/Ellicottville/West Valley, which ends a tremendous season 8-2. “This is my family,” said Bartoszek. “We spent a lot of time together. We spent countless hours, we say family when we break down in the huddle. We are going to stick together and we can’t let this drag down what was a successful season.” Devyn Nelsen had a strong game for Randolph (9-1) on the ground with 111 yards on 22 carries, as the Cardinals will advance to the Far West Regionals against the Section V champion next week.

Both teams finish 4-1 in dual-meet action “Runners” from page B1 Several girls were honored for their efforts at Grove City. Elle Russell and Grace Zabawa each received medals for their top 20 performances. Russell and McKenzie Malloy were named Runners Roost/ Checkers Runners of the Week. The girls placed first out of schools in the league without modified teams, and went on to finish13th out of 24 schools at the ECIC meet. “The girls did very well at ECICs,” Russell said. “They almost won the division, they just fell maybe a runner short of winning the division. So that was excit-

ing. It was nice to see that.” The success the boys saw this year was the best they’ve seen in four years. Like the girls, the boys finished 4-1 in dual meets. Out of six schools in their division, they placed second, behind only Alden. The boys success was in part due to the majority of the runners on the team being seniors, according to Russell. Most of the runners on the team have run for the Griffins for three or more years. “They ended up finishing 4-1 in the division, they did well at sectionals, it was just really impressive to see that tight-knit group work

together for four years and finally get what they had deserved for quite a while,” Russell said. The boys did especially well at the JFK Invitational, the Grand Island Invitational and the Eden Invitational. At JFK, they placed second out of 16 competing teams, while at Grand Island, they placed third out of 18 teams and received their first boys team trophy. They’d wrap up the regular season at the Eden Invitational, where they would finish second among small schools. “I was very impressed with the growth of the boys team over the last three

years,” Russell noted. “I have had the opportunity to watch this strong group of seniors progress from freshman year to accomplish great things.” The only loss for both teams in the regular season dual meets came at the hands of Alden. The Bulldogs and Springville were neck and neck this season for the division title. But Russell said he doesn’t believe taking second in the league is a shortcoming for Springville cross country. “I think it’s exciting to be relevant, I think it’s exciting to matter, it’s fun to watch, the people were excited and it was really their best com-

petition this year,” Russell said. “We didn’t fall short, on that, but I really feel the whole purpose of running is more of the journey than the actual destination. “Even if we had beat Alden, there’s a team better than us, and even if we beat that team, there’s a team in the next state better than us. What I really think matters is at the end of the day, that you tried, and that you gave what you had.” The cross country team hopes to continue building and will add its younger members to the fold next summer when Russell’s teams prepare for the 2015 season.

Dual-threat Hickson leads St. Francis to playoff win, matchup against nationally ranked Canisius By William Wilczewski SPORTS REPORTER

The No. 5-seeded St. Mary’s Lancers football team came into Nov. 6’s Monsignor Martin Association quarterfinals playoff game after escaping with a narrow 30-28 regular season victory on Nov. 1 over No. 6 Cardinal O’Hara. Having lost to No. 4 St. Francis 46-20 just a week prior to that on Oct. 25, the Lancers knew they would have their hands full in the rematch with the Red Raiders. They were oh-so right. In fact, after a Garth Pinnock opening kick return to the Lancer 19-yard line, it only took the Red Raiders two more plays to score on a 14-yard Francisco Guzman scamper. St. Francis’ foot was on the pedal from the onset— and it never took it off en route to a 48-28 victory that sends the Raiders to Ralph Wilson Stadium on Nov. 13 to face a Canisius squad ranked 38th in the nation. “We started out on fire and the kids carried it through,” Red Raiders head coach Jerry Smith said. “It was a good solid game all the way around.” Leading the way for St. Francis (5-5) was sophomore quarterback Jerry

Hickson, who ran for one touchdown and passed for two, and completed 15 of 26 throws for 280 yards and just one interception. St. Mary’s quarterback Takal Molson, on the other hand, threw three picks in the first half for a Lancer offense that tallied 421 total yards to the Red Raiders’ 468. And while those numbers are close, the game was anything but—and ended the Lancers’ season with a 6-4 record. “It is disappointing to come out flat like that, especially in a big playoff game,” St. Mary’s skipper Chris Glenn said. “The difference that was obvious to us is a weight room thing and preparation thing. “It’s a great group of kids, though,” he added. “They battled all year.” In their way on Nov. 6, though, was Hickson—who now has 2,520 passing yards in his sophomore campaign, a new school record. He’s also completed 179 passes for another single-season school mark, while his 22 touchdowns in 2014 ties him with former Connelly Cup winner Mike Radon. “Jerry’s very good. He’s well-coached and a phenomenal talent,” Glenn said, “and when you can’t defend the pass and can’t stop the run as well as you need to, a kid like that’s gonna pick you apart— and that what he did the last two times we played them.” Hickson, though, didn’t take all the credit.

WILLIAM ‘SKI’ WILCZEWSKI

Jerry Hickson was 15 for 26 for 280 yards and three total touchdowns against St. Mary’s. “Against these guys, we really focus on our run game, and since we kept pounding them with the ball, it opened up opportunities in the passing game” said the 6-foot, 175 pound quarterback, who passed for 215 yards in a 46-20 victory over St. Mary’s the first time around. “It feels great because everything’s just on point; it’s on time, and we’re just ready to go.” The Red Raiders will need to be ready too, because undefeated Canisius pounded them 48-13 on

Nov. 1—and looks to be a freight train that’s going to be next to impossible to stop. “We just need to minimize our mistakes,” Hickson said of the pending matchup, “and just play a good game on offense and defense.” It won’t hurt either if senior defensive back Kordell Holness-Lightbody has another game like he did against St. Mary’s. The 6-foot-1, 165 pounder senior was responsible for two of his club’s intercep-

tions on the night, along with one by Jarryd Taylor. “The defense was just playing a deep zone,” said Holness-Lightbody, who also caught four balls for 55 yards and a TD on offense. “I just basically had to take the deepest guy, and looking at (Molson’s) eyes, I saw where he was going to go and just picked them off and made the plays.” After being down 33-6 at halftime, St. Mary’s did score twice on St. Francis’ second string defense in the fourth quarter, but that group won’t likely see much action against Canisius in the semifinals, so the first string will have to be ready for the duration against the Crusaders. “It’s gonna be tough,” Holness-Lightbody said, “but I think we can do it. We have all week to gameplan, so I think we’ll be alright.” The biggest part of that game plan for Smith will be assignment based; knowing all too well which Crusaders can hurt them. “We just have to try to matchup the best we can, and come up with a supreme effort,” he said. “It’s still only high school football, so anything can happen. You never know.” In order to have success, though, the Red Raiders will also need the offensive balance they had against St. Mary’s, when six backs combined for their 188 rushing yards. Manny Williams led the ground-pound with 12 touches for 68 yards.

Brandon Metz also had 5 rushes for 44 yards plus a 43-yard receiving score, while Tyler Kraus caught a 39-yard TD score midway through the second quarter. Guzman also averaged more than 10 yards for each his 5 carries—two of which went for scores. “The running game opens everything up,” Smith explained. “You saw that tonight. It gave (Hickson) a chance to open it up in the air, and he did a good job.” The same can be said for St. Mary’s’ Anthony Stitt, who tried to keep his Lancers in the game with 9 carries for 132 yards and 2 TDs. Christian Osborne also added a pair of catches for 70 yards and a TD, while Molson completed 9 of 22 passes and ran the ball 15 times for 60 yards on the brisk night. The Lancer defense was led by Ray Cooper and Isiah Hinton, who equally combined for 14 tackles, while Paul Bargnesi also accounted for 5. Molson joined in on the action from his cornerback position with 5 tackles and an interception. Metz and Robert Dempey each had 6 tackles for the Red Raiders’ D, and Devin Delmont tallied 5. Guzman, John Hayes and Tim Smith contributed 4 each in the cause, while Hayes secured 3 sacks. Teammates Delmont and Williams also got to the elusive Molson once each, and George Kline added a fumble recovery in the contest.

Patience pays off for former St. Francis goalie Diebold By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR

Sometimes it just takes a little patience. Patience on the ice and patience in the classroom. For RPI senior netminder Scott Diebold (St. Francis High School), patience is something that became a virtue. After playing 45 to 50 games at St. Francis High School and being the main man at the Tri-City Storm of the United States Hockey league, Diebold had to wait his turn when heading to college.

It was a different feeling for him, but one he understood and got used to. “Going from playing 45 to 50 games in high school, I struggled with it a little bit,” Diebold recently said by phone. “You just have to wait your chance. You can’t worry about what you can’t control.” It would have been easy for Diebold to sit and pout over the fact he wasn’t able to get a lot of playing time early on. Instead, however, he used his time wisely, getting better at the craft he has been honing since he was a little boy. It also helped that he has had a great teacher in coach

Seth Appert. Appert took the reins during the 2006-07 season and he has worked with Diebold to get better in all aspects of his game. “One of the best goalie coaches in the game,” stated Diebold. “Inevitable that you will get better.” After seeing limited action during his freshman and sophomore campaigns, Diebold took the bull by the horns last season and played in 36 games — 35 of which were starts — boasting a 2.50 goals against average. The fact that he was able to get back on the ice regularly was rewarding for him as he put in the extra work during practice and before

games. “You just have to treat every practice like it’s a game,” Diebold said. “It’s been a blast.” It also has been a blast in the classroom. But it didn’t start that way in the beginning. After being used to a routine in high school, when Diebold went off to play junior, he didn’t have to take any classes. It was just hockey all the time every day. So when he entered RPI and tackled the academic rigors that accompany the school, it took the former Red Raider some time getting used to the flow again. “I was used to laying around playing hockey,”

laughed Diebold. “School was on another level. It blindsided me at first. I had to learn how to study again.” And learn he did. The industrial and management engineering major thanks St. Francis High School for getting him ready for the academic rigors that RPI present. “Academic are unreal at Frannies,” said Diebold. “They hold you to a high academic standard. It puts you in a different category.” Another category Diebold would like to be in is that of a professional hockey player after he graduates. He sees the success of some of his friends that have gone on to

either play in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL), American Hockey League (AHL) or overseas in Europe. The fact that they have had success gives him reason that he will be able to succeed as well. If it doesn’t workout, however, then he will always have a backup plan. “I have been at the rink with these guys, played with these guys. Vinny is doing well and Anthony is doing well overseas,” said Diebold. “I definitely want to play hockey somewhere. But if it doesn’t work out, I will go back to school in Buffalo.” Always the patient person.

THE COLLEGE Mann, UB to make first appearance in Women’s College Cup By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Courtney Mann could barely believe her eyes. Sitting in the front row of the team meeting room at UB Stadium, Mann saw the word “BUFFALO” flash on the big screen during the Women’s College Cup selection show. “It was one of the most incredible things I’ve ever seen,” said Mann, a Frontier High School graduate

and senior captain on the UB women’s soccer team. “Being a local kid, seeing that name up there, that’s what you dream about.” As a 15 seed, UB (16-23) will face No. 6-ranked Penn State (17-3) in the first round of the NCAA Division I Women’s Soccer Championship at 7:30 p.m. Friday (Nov. 14) on the Nittany Lions home field in University Park, Pa. “It’s going to be a big

challenge,” said junior Jackie Hall, the MAC Defensive Player of the Year. “But go big or go home, right?” Hall scored the winning goal in Sunday’s MAC Championship game at UB Stadium, capping off a record-breaking run in which the Bulls went unbeaten at home (11-0-1) and in conference play (11-0-2). “This team has been making history all year long, so it’s another op-

portunity for us,” firstyear coach Shawn Burke said. UB’s only two losses have come on the road at No. 19 Virginia Tech and Cornell. Penn State won its 16th Big 10 regular season championship this season but was upset in the conference tournament by Northwestern. This will be the Bulls first appearance in the Women’s College Cup following just the fourth

team MAC team championship in UB’s history. “It starts at the top with the leadership from our captains and seniors,” Burke said. Mann was one of eight UB players named to the all-conference teams. She was joined on the firstteam by Hall, MAC Offensive Player of the Year Katie Roberts, and goalkeeper Laura Dougall, who was also named MAC Freshman of the Year. Burke, who was named

MAC Coach of the Year, recruited Mann and most of the Bulls top players during his time as an assistant coach, and believed the talent was in place to have a special season when he interviewed for the head job last spring. Mann was one of the first players he recruited. “In eight years of coaching in college, she is one of the best athletes I’ve ever worked with,” Burke said earlier this season.

Currently, the group has active representation from the village of Springville, Springville-Griffith Institute Central School District, Trading Post Community Care Center, Love in the Name of Christ, Catholic Charities Women, Infants and Children Program, Bertrand Chaffee Hospital and Jennie B. Richmond Nursing Home, Springville Concord Elder Network, Springville Crossing Church, Springville Center for the Arts, the

Mobile Safety-Net Team, The John R. Oishei Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Springville. The coalition was formed as a result of the a study completed by the Mobile Safety-Net Team, in collaboration with the University at Buffalo Regional Institute, on behalf of The John R. Oishei Foundation. The report, Strengthening Western New York’s Safety-Net in Springville, contains indepth research from residents, service providers, schools and faith, community and government officials and offers a series of recommendations for better coordination and collaboration in service provision. The full report can be found at www.msntwny.org. The new coalition has set goals based on the recommendations found in the report, including creating a coalition of human service providers, increasing awareness and coordination of existing human services, increasing awareness of and availability of enriching afterschool activities for youth,

strengthening supports for addiction and drug prevention, bolstering supports for housing and homeowners, expanding supports for isolated seniors, strengthening work and family supports for families in poverty and domestic violence situations and bolstering supports for a largely volunteer-driven sector. In order to provide accurate and up-to-date information and referral on services in the southern portion of Erie County, the Coalition is creating a directory of services. This will include entries into Arounja (www. arounja.org), an online resource provided by Community Connections of NY, as well as a physical copy to be released early next year. The Coalition meets monthly at the village of Springville Municipal Building, located at 65 Franklin St. To be included in the directory or for more information on the report or the coalition, contact Annie Todd, Community Impact Coordinator of the Mobile Safety-Net Team, at 8543494 x3306.

SCENe is awarded a grant The Health Foundation for Western and Central New York has awarded a twoyear grant in the amount of $94,000 to the Healthy C o m m u n i t y A l l i a n c e ’s grassroots initiative on aging in place, SpringvilleConcord Elder Network. Executive Director Sharon Mathe said she is “thrilled that the f oundation recognizes that SCENe is vital to area adults as they face the challenges of aging in rural communities. SCENe promotes healthy aging, independence and community building by partnering with the people and places in the greater Springville area.” The grant funds will allow for a collaborative planning effort to engage groups and organizations with an interest in creating a sustainable,

regional approach to provide senior services in southern Erie and northern Cattaraugus counties. Virginia Krebs, SCENe coordinator notes, “Living on the fringes of both counties, with central services located 30 miles away, in the cities of Buffalo and Olean, our rural seniors are without easy access to programs that foster healthy aging and independent living. Low population density means that local municipalities do not have the funds to offer the modern senior centers that are available in suburban communities. But rural communities have strengths in long-standing relationships, enduring faith communities, resourcefulness, volunteerism and independence. SCENe’s success has been based on building region-

al strengths to coordinate available services and fill in the gaps. SCENe works alongside civic, commercial and private entities to enhance senior life and help vulnerable elders.” The Healthy Community Alliance’s mission is to improve quality of life in rural communities through broadbased, inclusive partnerships that support wellness and prevention. For more information, call 532-1010 or visit communityalliance.org. The Health Foundation for Western and Central New York is a non-profit private foundation the mission of which is to improve the health and health care of the people of Western and Central New York. Colleen Marcello to star in Opera Sacra

PHOTO SUBMITTED

Springville native Colleen Marcello, right, is starring in the Opera Sacra, to be presented on Nov. 21 and 22. Springville native Colleen Marcello will return to the stage at Opera Sacra in a production of Francis Poulene’s Dialogues of the Carmelites. Marcello sang

the lead role of the queen, Mary Stuart, in Opera Sacra’s 2012 production of Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda. Opera Sacra, the longest continually-producing opera

company in Western New York, was founded by Reverend Jacob Ledwon in 1975 at the former St. Joseph’s New Cathedral. Choosing works that center on religious themes, its repertoire spans over one thousand years of music, including the classics of Grand Opera, medieval liturgical dramas, children’s fables and contemporary masterworks. In celebration of the beginning of its 40th Season, Opera Sacra will offer another exceptional program, a fully-staged production of Francis Poulenc’s Dialogues of the Carmelites. This production will prominently feature several of the finest opera singers in Western New York. The opera, based on actual historical events, tells the story of a convent of French Carmelite nuns who, rather than renounce their

vocation, were executed by guillotine during the French Revolution. Loosely based on a diary written by one of Carmelite nuns, the story was subsequently turned in to a short novella by Gertrude von le Fort, The Song at the Scaffold. This became the basis for an unproduced movie script by George Bernanos. Although the movie was never made, that script became the libretto for Poulenc’s glorious opera. Two performances will be staged: Friday, Nov. 21 and Saturday, Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Joseph University Church, 3269 Main St. in Buffalo. For further information, call 833-0298.
