Springville grapplers eager to build on last season’s successful return to varsity action By Tom Gallagher CPOWNY SPORTS EDITOR
Inside the boys locker room at Springville Middle, a shelf lined with trophies illuminates the otherwise quaint, sunless office of Griffins wrestling coach Gary Feltz. Those trophies, perched on a shelf that sits a few feet beneath the ceiling and opposite the wall on which the phys ed teacher’s computer desk stands, aren’t exactly new, however. Feltz thinks he has a squad in place that can change that. The Griffins enter the 201415 wrestling season having to replace just one senior from last year’s 7-3 team, a fact that, in Feltz’s eyes, can only be construed as a positive. “You can see all the trophies we’ve got,” said Feltz, who returned to the program for the 2010-11 season after a hiatus. He also served as head coach from 2000 to 2006. “That’s from when I was coaching earlier. And I suspect we’ll pick up some more this year.” Springville’s season a year ago was especially impressive considering it was the Griffins’ first back on varsity after taking a few years to boost interest and numbers at the modified and JV levels. Knowing that he’s returning essentially the same team, only a year stronger, smarter and more experienced, is “encouraging,” Feltz said.
EMYLE WATKINS
Springville’s wrestling team has been hard at work looking to build on a very successful 7-3 season. “It’s encouraging to know that we continue to improve each year,” he said. “We dropped varsity a few years ago, and last year was the first year back. And the kids have just really come along. “It was a good move to [drop varsity] instead of forcing kids into positions they
shouldn’t have been in. We backed off and built it up.” A quick look at sheer numbers alone might validate Feltz’s notion that the “tear down” was a success. According to Feltz, when he returned for the 2010-11 season, there were “six kids” on the Springville varsity
roster. This year, he’s got 17. And he’s got a lot of talent, too. Junior Jake Smith is set to return as one of the Griffins’ top competitors. Smith, who went 27-10 last year, is expected yield the most wins for the team, Feltz said. He’ll likely compete at 138
pounds. Smith qualified for sectionals last year and already owns the SGI record for escapes in a single season with 39. Feltz thinks his top wrestler has the ability to add to that list over the course of the next two seasons. “He has a real passion
for the sport,” Feltz said of Smith. “That takes him a long way. He’s a strong kid, a quick kid, but what makes the difference from other kids is the passion he has for it.” Smith wasn’t the only Griffin to qualify for sectionals last season. Feltz said he’s expecting a lot out of juniors Josh Ball, who competed at sectionals in the 285-pound class, and Bryce Szudzik, who also qualified at 138. Both went 21-10 last season. Sophomore Ian Baker also went to sectionals last year at 152 pounds and is expected to be even better this year after a 14-12 freshman campaign. Senior Jobe Murphy, who has served as a captain for the Griffins in each of the past two years, “should qualify for sectionals,” Feltz said. He went 17-16 wrestling at 126 pounds last year. Noah Snyder and Bryant Bounding add senior leadership. As if to prove that Feltz’s reboot of the program generated interest in it, the Griffins have a very strong freshman presence this year, led by Kyle Keppler (106), Ben Smith (132), Mike Batten (126), and 145-pound competitors Devin Bruno, DJ Lynch and Matt Evans. Additionally, eighth-grader Jordan Salzer will help out in the 120-pound class. Tessa Smith, Jake Perkins, Greg Benstead and Jerry Weeks round out the Griffins’ roster. While Springville’s ECIC III opponents appear to be hurting for numbers this year — East Aurora merged with Holland and Depew picked up Cleveland Hill — the Griffins, Feltz said, are on the upswing.

Springville swimmers have division title in mind
EMYLE WATKINS
Head coach Duane Boberg thinks the Springville swim team has “as good a chance in a long time” to win the division.
By Tom Gallagher CPOWNY SPORTS EDITOR
EMYLE WATKINS
The Griffins open the season on Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Eden.
Duane Boberg may be entering just his second season at the helm of the Springville boys swimming and diving team, but his familiarity with the Griffins’ seniors this year extends far beyond what he saw from them last year. That’s because he’d coached most of them even prior to accepting the varsity gig. Boberg and the Griffins enter the 2014-15 season heavy on
experience and inter-program familiarity due in large part to the fact that the second-year skipper was a longtime coach for SWAT — the Springville Waves Aquatic Team, a youth swim club that many of his swimmers developed in. “This year’s seniors, I’ve been with most of them since they were about 8 years old,” Boberg said. Because of that longevity, Boberg knows what his Griffins are capable of — and his expectations are sky-high because of it. “I expect a lot because they’re really good,” Boberg noted. “They’re fantastic kids and fantastic athletes, so we’re really expecting a lot.” Given the success the program had last season, it’s easy to see why Boberg’s expectations are
so high. The Griffins broke a total of four school records in the pool, including all three relays, and return a large core of the swimmers that were responsible for that feat. “We had a very big year,” Boberg said. “It was awesome, because like I said, I’ve known most of these kids for a long time. It was a pretty smooth transition because there was no breaking-in period.” While Springville did graduate a pair of standout swimmers in Ryan O’Hara and Elliott Tessmer, the sting of their departure, Boberg said, is quelled a bit by the senior-heavy nature of this year’s group. A total of seven 12th graders are set to don the purple and gold swim caps this year and all of them — especially Mitchell Bunic — are expected to have large roles. Bunic was a staple on all three record-setting relay teams last season and also accounted for an individual pool record when he broke his own 100-meter breast stroke mark. He helped the Griffins’ 200-yard medley relay team to a 14th-place finish at sectionals and the 200-yard freestyle relay team to an 11thplace finish. The 400 free relay also qualified for sectionals.

Mount Mercy, Springville to give back in a big way for second straight year By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR
When Mount Mercy Academy and SpringvilleGriffith Institute take the court at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6 at Mount Mercy Academy, they will be doing so with a purpose. For the third year in a row, and for the second time between Springville and Mercy, the game will be played as part of the Mercy Heroes basketball game. The game is part of an initiative that Mount Mercy started three years ago to help bring awareness to the Wounded Warrior Project. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the Wounded Warrior Project. The purpose of the Wounded Warrior Project is to raise awareness and to enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members; to help injured servicemen and women aid and assist each other; and to provide unique and direct programs and services to meet their needs. Last year, on a snowy January day, the schools raised more than $2,500 for WWP. In the first two years of the event, more than $4,500 has been raised. “It is an amazing event,” stated Mount Mercy Academy coach John Glose. “I think a good thing we can teach these girls is service to others.” The communities of
JEFFREY T. BARNES
Mount Mercy and Springville participated in the Mercy Heroes game last year, too. Proceeds directly benefit the Wounded Warrior Project. South Buffalo and Springville have helped in a big way, as well. Despite a snow storm that hit South Buffalo during the morning of the game last year, the tiny gym on Red Jacket was packed with Springville and Mount Mercy supporters. “Giving back to their community,” said Glose, when asked what his team would get out it. “This is a
great way for these girls to do. And I am really excited to be able to do it again.” This year, AT&T, Wegmans and a host of others are stepping up to make the event event more enjoyable than in years past. AT&T is the official sponsor of the event, while Wegmans will donate the water and sports drinks to be sold during the game.
This is the second year in a row that Wegmans has come through for teams, community and the Wounded Warrior Project. “People are really stepping up and helping out, and it’s huge,” stated Glose. “We can’t do it without them. It’s the entire community getting involved. The schools getting involved. It’s these kids getting in-
Griffins focused on not forfeiting as much
volved. That’s what makes it great. Everybody chipping in and helping out.” For Mount Mercy guard Emily Sheehan, this is her third Mercy Heroes basketball game. She took part in the first one her sophomore year, when the Magic took on Buffalo Seminary. With family that served in the military, this even means a little bit more than whether or not you win or lose. It’s about raising awareness for those who fight and defend this country. “It has been a great experience so far,” stated Sheehan. “We all come together and work together to give back to the community and for the soldiers that have, and are, fighting for us. When you think of Wounded Warrior, you think of people that risk their lives for us, and have gotten hurt because of it.” The 2014 Mercy Heroes basketball game will be held Saturday, Dec. 6 at Mount Mercy Academy, 88 Red Jacket, Buffalo, NY. 14220. Junior varsity will start at 1:30 p.m. followed by varsity at 3 p.m. Admission is $5, with all proceeds going to the Wounded Warrior Project. There will be a 50/50 drawing, raffles and other great prizes the day of the games. The Griffins open the season in the Maple Grove Tournament on Dec. 6.
“The first part of the program is getting all of those [weight classes] filled so that you don’t have to forfeit. We averaged two or three slots that we had to forfeit last year,” Feltz said. “We really are on the upswing, while most other schools are losing kids.” Whether or not raw numbers translate to the program’s first division championship victory under Feltz remains to be seen, but the head coach said he believes his squad can do it. “That’s the goal,” he said. And if the Griffins do manage to add a division championship trophy? That shelf in his office will have to hold a little more weight.
Piatek, Bunic lead relay returners Swim from page B1 Donny Piatek joins Bunic as the only two SGI swimmers that had a hand in all three record-setting relay performances last year. Senior Trey Aebly and underclassman Nolan West joined them in the 200 free relay. West was also on the 400 free squad while Aebly competed on the 200 medley team. O’Hara swam the the last leg in both the 400 free and 200 medley relays. Boberg said he hasn’t yet made up his mind as to who will join them this year but suggested that underclassman Brad Zifra has looked strong in practice. Piatek thinks that no matter who joins he and his relay mates this season, the Griffins have a chance to break their year-old records. “I think we can break the 200 free again and the 200
medley, but the 400 is going to be tough because [O’Hara] was such a solid 100 swimmer,” Piatek said. “It’s going to be good.” Outside of the relays, Boberg noted that all of his seniors will be key contributors in individual events. Bunic and Aebly, both of whom qualified for sectionals last year in individual events, will both swim the 100 breast, while Piatek will compete in the 100 fly. All three of them “do the 50 free in a really good time, too,” Boberg noted. Seniors Jake Gorski (100 breast), Garrett Olrogg (100 back) and Kyle Schultz (50 free, 200 I.M.) will also be leaned on in individual events. Boberg is still trying to find foreign exchange student and senior Justus
Hamm’s niche, but he’ll likely swim the breast and back stroke events. On the diving board, Boberg is optimistic that Hunter Louth and Christian Krasnek will have strong years for the Griffins under new diving coach Ryan Dygert. “We’re looking for a big year from them,” Boberg said. “We’re looking to get both of those guys into sectionals this year.” Perennial division powerhouse East Aurora knocked off the Griffins by 16 points and claimed another division title in 2013-14, but Springville, Boberg said, isn’t going to fold this year. “We’re going to give them a run for their money,” he said. “It will be tough because they’ve won division for the last 20 years, but we have
as good a chance in a long time to try and beat them this year.” And just what do the Griffins have to do to supplant the Blue Devils atop the ECIC standings and defeat them when the teams meet Dec. 12 at East Aurora? “We’ve just got to bust our butts,” Piatek said. “We have to swim practice as hard as we can and go into the meet positive.” Devon Schultz, Sam Manfre, Kurt Uschold, Greyson Louth, Levi VonIderstein, Dominic Hartenstein, Matthew Sobata, Bret DeFrain, Josh Morazzini and Jake Kinderman round out the Griffins’ roster will will be counted on to contribute. Kay Piatek, Maura West and Lexi Blesy will serve as managers.

Cattaraugus County collecting information for agriculture trail The Cattaraugus County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism is in the process of collecting information on all operating agriculture businesses in the county. The county wishes to better promote the county’s agricultural businesses and products by developing a county agriculture trail. Crystal Abers, director of the department stated, “A letter and survey have been mailed to over 500 agriculture businesses to help us in identifying the county’s agriculture assets and to invite them to participate in our promotional activities, which will include an agriculture trail.” The southwest region of New York state has long been known to be prime agricultural land that supports a diversity of farms and farm operations. “Cattaraugus County, home to approximately 1,100 farms, supports and promotes our rich history of agriculture. The county and the Cattaraugus County Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board have created the website www.ccAgHelp.com, titled “Explore Agriculture in Cattaraugus
County” for the purpose of providing a one-stop center for all things agriculture and agriculture-related in Cattaraugus County,” explained Abers. “The site is a portal to help area farmers and agri-businesses obtain information and to open lines of communication with those that are in the region to aid farmers and agribusinesses. Included on the website is a directory of farms, which lists approximately 60 of the county’s farms. We would like to invite those ag businesses not already on the list to join.” “For further promotion of our agriculture businesses, Cattaraugus County is developing a Cattaraugus County Agriculture Trail to highlight the abundance of local food options available to consumers and to promote those farms and local food producers that make the region’s food system vibrant, diverse, sustainable and healthy. In addition to local foods production, other non-food related products, such as trees, will be featured as well. The trail will also showcase those farms that welcome visitors to see the farming process up close and personal,” stat-
ed Abers. “In addition to the agriculture website and the agriculture trail, the county hosts an annual farm tour for county legislators, county planning board, agriculture and farmland protection board and others. Farms that were featured in the 2014 Farm Tour included: Great Valley Berry Patch, Snow Brook Farm, Maple Ridge Bison Ranch, and Pumpkinville. “We try to showcase a variety of farms. We would love to hear more about other farms and visit their operation,” Abers continue. “Periodically the county also provides agriculture related seminars for agriculture entrepreneurs, such as bee keeping/honey production, poultry and hops. These seminars help identify what can be produced in Cattaraugus County, markets for the product, resources to help with establishing the ag-business and much more,” she added. For further information or to obtain a survey or for questions regarding the County Agriculture Trail, call Ginger Malak at 9382312 or email her at ggmalak@cattco.org.

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs wants to remind snowmobilers to register their sleds locally and avoid the registration rush by mailing in their snowmobile registrations using the signature green Renew Local envelope or doing so at any of the Erie County Auto Bureaus. “Snow has already begun to fly and we do not want any snowmobiler to be delayed in being properly registered,” said Jacobs. “Winter in Erie County is more fun on a snowmobile and we want riders ready to enjoy the season.” Members of a snowmobile club will save money on their sled’s registration, as the rate is only $47.50. Nonmembers will pay the full registration cost of $102.50. Snowmobilers are encouraged to contact the New York State Snowmobile Association by visiting www. nysnowmobiler.com for information on joining local clubs and to obtain your registration voucher. To register using the Renew Local envelope, riders need to complete and mail in both sides of a New York state snowmobile registration form, a photocopy of existing snowmobile registration and a copy of the registrant’s driver’s license. Snowmobile club members need to also send proof of membership in a NYSSA snowmobile club. Mail ev-
erything to: Christopher L. Jacobs, Erie County clerk, 92 Franklin Street-Suite 1, Buffalo, NY 14202 including a check, per sled, made payable to the Erie County Clerk. A snowmobile registration will be mailed back within 10 business days upon receipt of renewal form. Erie County snowmobile trails are usually scheduled to open in mid-December, providing the ground is frozen and there is at least 6 inches of snow. Riders are encouraged to check with their local clubs to ensure trails have been opened and to obtain the latest information on snowmobiling safety courses in and around Erie County. “We hope that all snowmobilers will register their sleds locally,” said Jacobs. “By doing so it helps keep needed money in Erie County instead of going to Albany.” For forms and additional registration information riders can visit www.erie.gov/ registrations or contact the Erie County Auto Bureau Call Center at 858-7450. Snowmobilers can also visit the Erie County Auto Bureau’s website at www. erie.gov/autobureau, go to the online reservations page and schedule an appointment at any of the three largest auto bureaus operated by the County Clerk’s Office Amherst, Cheektowaga and downtown Buffalo.

Animals and surviving WNY storm By Forrest Fisher OUTDOOR COLUMNIST
Last week, WNY did not face an ordinary winter weather episode, it was a historic weather event that many of us will never forget. People can survive because we are usually forewarned about the potential of catastrophic circumstances, but did you ever wonder about deer, bear and other animals during the kind of snowstorm that blew into WNY? Wild animals seem to understand weather without a TV or radio report. It seems that even science has trouble figuring out how wildlife and insects seem to know when it is time to take cover. My better half and I reside in the hills above East Aurora. We did not experience the 90+ inches of snow that the village of East Aurora recorded (according National Weather Service data), but we did have about five and one-half feet of the white stuff on the level, with far more depth on our house and shed roofs. Our two bird feeders off the back deck hold 3-pounds and 8-pounds of bird food each. We mix a combination of 60 percent sunflower seeds and 40 percent wild bird seed mix into each, but on the day before the storm, for some reason, birds of many species would empty the feeders in less than two hours. This was incredible since the feeders each last about 2-3 days before the need for reload. Go figure! How did the birds know the storm was coming or would be that severe? My snowplow guy was buried himself and so was unable to keep up with the quickly falling snow accumulating on our driveway. I called around for help and, of course, these were calamitous times, there really was no help. South of us though, I called Tractor Supply in Arcade and they still had a supply of large snow blowers – including several of the brand new 3-stage, 28-inch wide model Cub Cadet models with high speed blower. Perfect, I thought, so I drove south where the roads were still open and was able to procure one of these. Incredibly, my nephew from Tampa, Florida, was visiting us during a few days to hunt deer. Bad timing dude! He was amazed at the resolve and happy faces to be found around WNY despite the weather. He was brave, but a bit timid about heading outside during the height of the blizzard. Who wouldn’t be? I was too and I’m an outdoor guy, but I thought, life is, let get it done. The snow blower cleared the driveway with ease and also allowed us to reach the bird feeders and the rear yard sheds. Fern (my better half)
was baking pies – the smell sure removed a lot of the tension that seemed to be heightened by watching TV reports. Under the bird feeders, Fern tossed the apple peelings and Fern asked me to fill the feeders to the top and toss an extra pound or two right into the snow with the apple peelings. She said, “I know about rules for not feeding deer, but these are special times and we need to help out our local critters somehow if we can.” It was about 4:30 p.m. when we finished our snow clearing and feeder filling jobs during the height of the big blow. Despite our best efforts, the high wind and horizontal snowfall did not take long to coat the feeders and hide the seed and tasty apple peelings below. By mid-morning of the last day of the storm, the wind subsided and the snowfall stopped. Not more than 30 minutes later, the birds were back digging out a path through the snow to the food spouts of the bird feeders suspended eight feet off the ground. Two hours later, some 12 wild turkeys arrived and a half-dozen doves too! Amazing! The critters had survived. At 2:00 p.m., three doe deer, a parent and her two siblings, must have smelled out the apple peelings and there they were (a foot below the snow surface too), stomping the snow to dig out the apple peeling morsels. Did the deer survive the deep snow and extended days of non-feeding during the storm period? Yes they did! They were marvelous to watch. If you are a hunter, the worse the storm, the lessons learned here apply. When the storm is really nasty, like this one, science and historic observation provide proof that the deer find shelter in the woods under cedar or pine tree limbs and wait it out. Once fair weather returns, the deer head out to feed. They take turns leading the way and all of them walk in single file to use less energy carving a single trail through the deep snow. Deer head to their preferred feeding spots along forest edges where favored wild foods of beech nuts, acorns and fresh tree buds already wrapped in preparation for next spring can be found. They browse most during early morning and late day periods, but after a storm like this one, and considering the rut is still on, bucks may browse for doe’s ready to mate all day long. Look for tracks. During the light snow and moderate temperatures forecast for this weekend following the storm cleanup, deer will return to their normal habits and overall, the storm will likely have done little to damage the deer herd and other wildlife. It may have dampened the enthusiasm of hunters, but the deer will still be there, especially since we had the 3-day melt after the big snowfall.
