Farner hopes dedication, experience pay off for Springville girls bowlers, boys have new look By Tom Gallagher CPOWNY SPORTS EDITOR

Springville bowling coach Kevin Farner knows he has a dedicated bunch of girls bowlers on his roster this year. They showed him as much by showing up to Springville Lanes regularly during the summer. “These girls work hard,” Farner said by phone earlier this week. “They were in here when it was 90 degrees out over the summer trying to improve.” He’s hoping some of that heat finds its way to the lanes this season. The Lady Griffins enter the 2014-15 bowling season set to return a strong contingent of competitors from a team that finished 9-1 and shared a division championship with Pioneer last season. All three of Farner’s top bowlers are back this year, and that — coupled with the dedication he knows his girls have — is reflected in his expectations. “I’m anticipating having a really good girls team,” Farner said. “We were strong last year, but if anything, we’re even stronger this year. They’re [self starters], and that’s a lot of fun. You as a coach can tell them how good they can be if they work at it, but they still have to do the work. And they do.” Leading the way once again for the Springville girls will be Mariah Gamel. The sopho-

She placed 16th at sectionals out of nearly 300 competitors from all of Section VI and was just 22 pins shy of qualifying for states. Farner and Gamel are both

expecting her to be even better this season. “Her and I are both talking about her averaging a 195 to 200 this year,” Farner said. “We think it’s a realistic goal.” Farner would know. He’s known Gamel, who started bowling in his youth program at age 6, for 10 years. As

such, he knows what makes her tick. “She’s got experience, she’s a good athlete and she listens to everything I suggest,” Farner said. “She’s very motivated to get even better.” That bodes well for Farner, who will coach Gamel for two more seasons even after

this one. In fact, there isn’t a single senior on his entire roster — and that includes his other top two returners, Brittany Sullivan and Emily Zebrowski. Sullivan, a junior, was the Lady Griffins’ No. 2 girl last season. According to Farner, she carried “about a 155

average.” “I could see her improving that by 15-20 pins,” Farner said. “She’s very mature for her age. She’s a nice, downto-Earth kid.”

The Griffins will open the season Dec. 13 at Fredonia State College.

Joe Marvin and Chad Russell’s goals for their 2014-15 indoor track team at Springville-Griffith Institute are simple. First, Marvin and Russell want to see each of their athletes set personal bests as the season wears on. Additionally, the longtime coaching duo wants to help as many athletes as it can qualify for sectionals. Above all, however, Marvin and Russell are just hoping to retain all of their studentathletes as the season winds down. They’re hoping they have a group in place that can help them reach that goal. The Griffins enter the 2014-15 season boasting a 49-person roster — “probably the biggest number we’ve had since about ’0506,” Marvin said — that has the potential to grow and improve from the time the team’s first meet starts on Dec. 13 all the way to the

sectional meet in February. That growth potential, Marvin said, is what keeps indoor track student-athletes coming back for more. “One of my biggest goals is the retention of athletes to the end of the season,” Marvin said. “As long as they’re getting better, if that’s what their goal is, as long as they see progression, they usually stick with it.” And if the Griffins stick with it, there’s a good chance they’ll be well-represented at the sectional meet. They were last indoor season — and they return a strong contingent of those athletes this year,

particularly on the girls side. Leading the way for the Lady Griffins in 2014-15 will be thrower Jess Weide. The senior placed 10th in the shot put at sectionals last year with a 32-foot, 7 3/4-inch throw. Weide, who already owns the SGI record in the shot put, “has a good throw,” according to Marvin. “She’ll be in the finals for sectionals, I would imagine,” Marvin said before adding that Weide could have a chance to qualify for states this year.

Special WNY big game season begins Monday By Forrest Fisher OUTDOOR COLUMNIST

Cyber Monday marks a new beginning each year as the smell of deer camp coffee and pot-belly stoves winds down for the big game regular firearm hunting year in Western New York. Another generation of hunters known for their stamina and persistence will start the last sector of special big game hunting seasons in New York on Monday, Dec. 8, traditionally known as the “late archery and blackpowder season.” With the end of the regular firearm season on Sunday (Dec. 7), access to the woods by firearm hunters will diminish by over 90 percent. The only big game firearm hunters heading to the woods for nine days starting Monday (Dec. 8) and ending (Dec. 16), will be the black-powder hunters (muzzle-loaders) and those archers with regular long bow, recurve bow, compound bow and crossbow. No shotgun or regular rifle hunters are permitted to hunt big game during this last special season.

This year, to the delight of many hunters that had stopped hunting, New York has now legalized crossbow use for big game, joining up with similar rules for use that exist in Ohio and Pennsylvania. The result has been more hunters in the deer woods, including a lot of new, old hunters, who had previously retired from the heritage of hunting. New York now officially allows crossbow use during the last two weeks of the early archery season (Nov. 1-16), through the entire firearm season (Nov. 17-Dec.7) and the season just ahead, through the entire late archery and muzzleloader season (Dec. 8-16). For the last decade or so, aging hunters, youngsters and many lady hunters, too, have all awaited the New York State opportunity to hunt big game with a crossbow. For many, the reasons are simple: they like hunting with a bow and arrow rig, but can no longer pull back the string due to physical strength limitations and pain from health disabilities. The crossbow can be loaded into ready-to-shoot condition with a little cranking device that is easy to use and re-

Whatever the hunter choice of hunting implement for the last special big game season of the year, there are plenty of deer left for harvest. DEC is still calculating the check station data and telephone reporting data to identify the degree of hunting success that each wildlife manage-

ment unit has tallied, but many hunters have unofficially reported seeing far less deer this year than in in other years. If the deer have been lying down during daylight hours due to increased hunter activity or if the segment of the calendar and rut dates caused fewer deer to be observed by

hunters, time will tell when we see the official big game harvest data later in the year. One thing is for sure, some of the oldest (biggest) deer in the woods seem to know when hunting season is taking place and they become nocturnal. It may be the increased human presence in the woods, the sound of trucks continuously driving up and down logging roads, hunter travel in the normally quiet woods or something else, but the big deer are usually out of sight. When the regular firearms season ends, suddenly there is little of any of the above. The deer know it, the big and little deer, and they begin to free up for daylight browsing. Enter the late archery and black-powder season hunters, this is their time to enjoy the quiet woods and a greater number of deer that should be browsing for food and looking for late season rutting cycle closure. Of course, anytime is a great time to be in the woods, but if you are a dyed-in-the-wool hunter, this last season is your season. Enjoy every moment! Good luck to everyone headed for the WNY wilds this week.

Coaches won’t commit to relay teams just yet Track from page B1 Springville also returns its entire sectional-qualifying 4x200-meter relay team (Sarah Marren, Joelle Adamczyk, Molly Darling and Kalei Brautlacht). In addition, the Griffins will bring back key components from their 4x400- and 4x800-meter squads from sectionals, including McKenzie Maloy, Elle Russell, Ashlea Broeneman, Brautlacht and Adamczyk. Even with so many girls relay returners, however, Marvin and Russell wouldn’t commit to any particular group just yet. “Last year, it was regularly a competition between the girls to see who would

be doing a leg of the relays,” Marvin said. “So to name four right now would be slighting Nos. 5, 6 and 7, who might be taking someone’s place in those relays.” It might be easy to speculate, though, that Elle Russell, Broeneman and Maloy have a strong chance to man legs of the 4x8. All three will be leaned on as valuable distance runners this year — especially Russell. “She has a really good chance at making sectionals,” Chad Russell said. “Hopefully she can be top five there.” Gabrielle Pfeifer, Maloy, Brautlacht and Adamczyk

are all expected to be strong in the 1,000 and 1,500-meter runs, too. In short distance and hurdle events, Marren and Alix Dubel will be valuable contributors for the Griffins. Darling and Corrin Sacilowski will both run the 300 dash. Sacilowski will also chip in on the race walk and continually improving pole vaulter Megan Stoddard will look to build on a quality outdoor season. Darling (long), Sydney Bradford (high) and Brautlacht (triple) should be strong in field events. For the “third or fourth” straight year, Springville sports a girl-heavy roster,

according to Marvin. Of the 49 athletes listed on the Griffins’ indoor track roster, just 12 are boys. “We’ve got a really small boys team,” Marvin said. Jake Moroge will be one of the top athletes on that team. The senior, who ran a leg on SGI’s school record-holding 4x100meter relay team, will be leaned on in a plethora of events — most notably in sprints, hurdles and in the high jump. Beyond Moroge, Cody Bass will be a strong hurdler for the Griffins, as will first-time indoor athlete Jeremy Baker. Luke O’Neal is going to throw and sprint; Jake Bystryk

will do hurdle and jump events. Springville, like many teams in Western New York, was affected by inclement weather that blanketed the area recently. As such, the Griffins’ practice routine was thrown off “a little,” Marvin said. They’ll have to iron out the kinks in time for their season-opening meet Dec. 13 at Fredonia State College. “We need to expose the kids to some of the jumps, the hurdles, doing some handoffs, stuff like that,” Marvin said. “Other than just general conditioning, just so the first time they, for instance, take a handoff, it’s not at a meet.”

Bowling from page B1 Completing the top-returning-bowler trifecta is Zebrowski, who is also a junior. Even though she’s only been bowling since her freshman year, she carried an average similar to Sullivan’s last season. “She’s very hard working, talented, and motivated,” Farner said. “She’s come a long way since ninth grade.” Despite being underclassmen themselves, Gamel, Sullivan and Zebrowski will be counted on as leaders by Farner and the rest of the Lady Griffins. “The girls look up to them,” Farner said. Freshmen Emily Leverentz and McKenzie Brown both have a chance at joining Gamel, Sullivan and Zebrowski on Springville’s ‘A’ team, Farner said. He also said that junior and team player Elizabeth Chase, steadily improving sophomore Hailey Lines, first-year bowler Amanda Schwartz and seventh graders Sonya Krezmien and Kristen Brown will be valuable contributors. Last year, in addition to sharing the division crown with Pioneer, the Lady Griffins qualified as a team for sectionals. Farner said he thinks the Lady Griffs “are

“We had a mediocre regular season and a great day at the sectionals,” Farner said. Springville, however, graduated three of its top bowlers from that team and saw three other contributors from last season opt not to join the team this year. The Griffins, as such, have just five returners. Zack Slippy is among them, though. Slippy led the team with a 178 average last year as a freshman and will be counted on again

in 2014-15. Alex Wendley, who averaged around a 175 a season ago, is also back this year. Behind Slippy and Wendling, freshman Nick Abdo and sophomore Daimen Skinner, both of whom “average around a 160,” according to Farner, will be leaned on heavily. “We do have high-end talent, we’re just not as deep as we’ve been in the past,” Farner said. “We have to match our four best against their four best and our next four against their next four and hope it works out.” The Griffins’ ‘B’ squad will be led by Louis Davies and first-year varsity bowlers Gage Marvin, who is in seventh grade, Matt Warner, an eighth grader, and Emmett Collins, a freshman. Sophomore Dalton Grimm and freshman Tyler Brennan, a pair of first-year bowlers, round out the Griffins’ roster. ••• In Springville’s seasonopening matches on Dec. 2 against Pioneer, the girls lost, 4-3, while the boys won, 4-3. The Pioneer girls and Springville boys won their match behind strong efforts from but their ‘B’ teams. The Springville girls ‘A’

team won all three of its points by a total of 286 pins, but could not overcome the tremendous depth of the Pioneer squad. The Pioneer ‘B’ girls outscored the SGI ‘B’ girls by a total of 337 pins, giving Pioneer a 79-pin edge to secure the victory. SGI’s Gamel led all scorers with a 186 high game and a 535 three-game total and Leverentz also added a 491 series. The boys match was almost an exact reversal of the girls contest. Spingville was only able to win one game on the ‘A’ team, but its ‘B’ team won all three of its games, the last one in an exciting fashion to pull out the win for the home team. Dalton Grimm, Matt Warner, Emmitt Collins and Louis Davies all struck in the 10th frame of the third game for the SGI ‘B’ boys to pull out a come-from-behind 26-pin victory. Overall match scoring was led by Pioneer’s Thomas Holmes and Nate Tackentien with 664 and 602, respectively. The SGI squad was led by Zack Slippy, who had a 565 series, Alex Wendley, who had a 524, and Nick Abdo, who had a 200-512. The Griffins’ next match is Dec. 8 at Iroquois.

THE COLLEGE Bulls hire coach from Division III football powerhouse By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Lance Leipold ran into a former colleague at a national convention last January and asked for some advice in moving up in the coaching ranks. Turner Gill, whom Leipold had coached with for three years at the University of Nebraska, shared his experiences taking a chance on a downtrodden University at Buffalo program in 2005 and building it into a champion in three years. Last month, when Leipold was approached about the possibility becoming the next UB football coach, he immediately flashed back to that conversation with Gill. “He said the more he came to look at this place, the more special it became,” Leipold said. “Turner is a man I have always respected and I took his words and advice that

Lance Leipold posted a 106-6 record as the head coach at Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater. you need to look.” Leipold liked what he saw enough to decided UB was the kind of “special opportunity” that could lure him away from his alma mater, WisconsinWhitewater. In his eighth season

coaching the Warhawks, Leipold has a 106-6 record and five national championships. He is the fastest coach to reach 100 wins at any NCAA level. And his team is currently 12-0 and ranked No. 1 in the country entering the

D-III quarterfinals. Leipold will continue his pursuit of a sixth national championship while transitioning into his new job at UB. “I do need to finish the obligation of making sure we play our fullest as long as we can in the playoffs back in Wisconsin,” Leipold said. But Leipold is eager for the new challenge at “New York’s university,” he said. “This is an unbelievable opportunity, and it’s ready to take off,” Leipold said. Leipold is a proven winner, something athletic director Danny White said was a priority in his coaching search. “This team is ready to win and we feel like ready to win now,” White said. “As a result, as I went through this process, I wasn’t out there selling a rebuilding effort. I was out there talking about the character and talent we have in our program and really looking

at and targeting successful head coaches, proven head coaches that have won. “I was not too interested in looking for folks with a learning curve.” This is a departure from White’s last major hire, men’s basketball coach Bobby Hurley, who no head coaching experience and limited experience as an assistant, but was a highprofile name by virtue of his playing career, and his Hall of Fame father’s success at the high school level. White and Leipold also acknowledged that UB’s new coach will face a learning curve on the recruiting trail. With no scholarships to offer at WisconsinWhitewater, Leipold drew nearly all of his players from Wisconsin and Illinois. He plans to hire a staff of assistants that will help him make vital contacts in other areas. “That’s got to be proven,” Leipold said. “You have to

just go out, and like anybody, you have to prove yourself. … That’s a part we’re going to work hard at.” At WisconsinWhitewater, Leipold also had a winning tradition and facilities that were the class of Division III to sell recruits. Leipold will not be able to sell those qualities at UB. But he believes the university has plenty more to offer potential players. “You have to be aggressive in recruiting,” Leipold said. “You need to be thorough. “Most importantly, once you make the evaluation, when you deal with student athletes, you have to talk about what the opportunities are on the field and off the field. This is not just a fouryear experience. This is going to be a 40-plus year experience for them, and this university can open doors for those student athletes after they leave here. I think when they see that, they’ll be as excited as I am.”

OP Middle student sparks UB volleyball team this season By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

She never shows up on the score sheet and only takes the floor during timeouts. But Savannah Harvey played a part in helping the University at Buffalo volleyball team qualify for the Mid-American conference quarterfinals for the first time in school history. Savannah, a 13-year-old Orchard Park Middle School student, sat on the Buffalo bench in her No. 10 jersey at home games this season. “Savannah is the little light

on the team,” said Danielle Marotto, a junior from Lancaster. “She’s fantastic in all of the huddles. Even though there is tension, she is always the one that’s trying to bring every one up. She dances around and it gets everyone to smile.” Savannah linked up with UB through the Friends of Jaclyn Foundation, which seeks to improve the quality of life for children with pediatric brain tumors. In 2005, Savannah was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a malignant tumor that originates in the cerebellum, a region of the brain that plays

an important role in motor control, attention, language, and regulating fear and pleasure responses. Her cancer is currently in remission. Coincidentally, Savannah’s father, who played volleyball at Springfield College, had a prior relationship with UB head coach Reed Sunahara. And her older brother, Noah, had played junior varsity volleyball for Rick Albano, husband of the former Stephanie Jansma, a Lancaster native now coaching at UB. “Savannah really helps the girls put things in perspective,” Albano said.

“No matter how things get on the court, you see her and she’s happy. She’s enjoying every minute of it. So we should be happy out here playing a sport we love. And no matter how far we are down, we can fight back. Savannah is definitely a fighter, and we want to portray that on the court for her.” Getting a high five from Savannah during timeouts became a home game ritual for the Bulls this season. And in the final MAC home game against Akron, one the Bulls needed to win to make the conference tournament, Savannah began giving hugs

during stoppages in play. UB went on to sweep the match. “I told her her hugs were lucky,” senior Liz Scott said. “Savannah and her family have brought a new light to the team. She’s so upbeat, she’s got so much spirit, and when she gives us a high five or a smile on the bench, it lights up the whole team.” Being part of the UB team has also been a light in Savannah’s life. “It feels pretty good getting to know the girls, being here, encouraging them to win,” Savannah said

“The girls are wonderful with her,” said Savannah’s mother, Andrea. “They are excellent role models. They are just so sweet with her. They accept her for who she is, and support her for who she is.” UB will return all but two players from this year’s team, which finished 17-15 and tied a program record with six MAC wins in Sunahara’s first season. Savannah will also be back on the bench next season. “She’s part of the team,” Marotto said. “She’s part of our family.”

Hoppy helped Buff State to first postseason berth since 2000 By Jonah Bronstein SPORTS REPORTER

Growing up in the shadows of Ralph Wilson Stadium, Kyle Hoppy learned what it takes to conduct the comeback drive. Six years after he seemingly hung up his shoulder pads, Hoppy is doing just that at Buffalo State. Hoppy, the quarterback of Orchard Park High School’s 2008 state championship team, led the Bengals this year to their first eight-win season since 1998 and their first postseason appearance since 2000. Buffalo State finished the season at 8-3 with a lopsided victory in the ECAC Southwest Bowl, during which Hoppy had the best game of his career so far, passing for 335 yards and five touchdowns, tying the school record. Better yet for the Bengals, the 23-year-old business major still has two years of eligibility left.

After being drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in 2009, Hoppy turned down a scholarship offer from Bucknell University to pursue a professional baseball career. He toiled in the minors for four years before reaching out to his former Orchard Park teammate and current Buffalo State assistant coach, Garret McLaughlin, about restarting his football career. Hoppy backed up another state champion quarterback, Casey Kacz (Sweet Home), last season, and won the starting job this year. Senior wide receiver Mike Doherty (Kenmore East) said the Bengals expected their firstyear starter would pick up right where the most prolific quarterback in school history left off. “I knew Kyle was going to be good, because he was a state champion in high school and a playmaker,” said Doherty, who graduated high school the same year as Hoppy. Hoppy showed a bit of rust after the long hiatus from

playing quarterback. He was benched in the second half twice and briefly lost his starting job. But by the end of the season, Hoppy had put together two straight standout performances, and coach Jerry Boyes believes Hoppy could establish himself as the top passer in school history over the next two years. “He has the skillset to do that,” Boyes said. “The potential is all right there. Now it’s just continuing to grow, from the mental aspect of the game.” Boyes said Hoppy made great strides toward the end of the season in reading defenses and calling plays at the line of scrimmage, a key element of the Bengals offense. Hoppy finished the season with a 54.1 percent completion rate, 2,258 yards and 22 touchdowns, one shy of the school record. He ranked first in the nation with 18.2 yards per completion and his 9.9 yards per attempt were the best

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Buffalo State QB and OP native Kyle Hoppy. in the Empire 8 conference. His 161.7 efficiency rating ranked second in the conference and 18th nationally. He also rushed for 302 yards and five touchdowns, putting him in the top 50 nationally in points accounted for. “This was a great year,” Hoppy said. “I really came into my own after not playing organized football for five years and backing up Casey last year.

“I’ve always loved the sport of football. I gave it a shot at baseball and it didn’t work out, but now I’m giving it another shot here in football and I’m loving it. Being here right now, it’s a great time to be here. I feel like I’m in a great place.” Buffalo State fell one win short of its ultimate goal of qualifying for the NCAA playoffs, but established a baseline of success by being selected for, and winning, one of the seven ECAC bowl games. “Coach Boyes always talks about making noise and this year we made noise in our conference and made noise nationally,” Hoppy said. “Now we need to keep making that noise and keep striving toward that ultimate goal of getting to the NCAA tournament and winning some games.” The Bengals put 11 players on the all-conference teams this year, and not one of them was Hoppy. Linebacker Marquis Artis (Amherst), who was named Empire 8 Defensive Player of the Year. Doherty, the pro-

gram’s all-time leading receiver, second all-time leading rusher Rich Pete, offensive lineman Brandon Lathrop (Kenmore West), linebacker Mitch Thomas (Sweet Home), linebacker Shaq Frederick, and kicker Marc Montana (St. Joe’s) were also first-team selections. Wide receiver Ryan Carney (Olean), defensive end Dez Howard (St. Francis), defensive tackle Anthony Sanders (McKinley), and cornerback Sherman Nelson made the second-team. Hoppy won’t have Pete to hand off to or Doherty at his disposal next season, but Carney, who set a school record with 12 touchdown catches, has another year left, and Boyes believes he has built the Bengals into a program that can withstand graduation losses. “If you’re doing things right, the faces change, but success stays,” Boyes said. “Tradition should not graduate.” Doherty, for his part, said, “If anybody is going to lead them to the (NCAA) playoffs, it’s going to be Kyle.”

The Erie County Legislature’s Majority Caucus has revised County Executive Mark Poloncarz’s proposed 2015 budget that only held the line on taxes and approved a budget that decreases taxes. The Majority Caucus’s cuts to the budget provided much needed tax relief for residents in 2015. “In our first year leading the Legislature, the Republican-aligned Majority Caucus has adopted a budget that cuts spending, protects services and delivers a tax decrease to residents,” said Chairman John Mills. “When the county executive released his proposed budget in October, he only held the line on taxes. Our caucus agreed that wasn’t good enough. Taxpayers deserved better. We went to work, finding millions of dollars in cuts to non-essential services, and we were able to reduce the tax rate for 2015.” The Majority Caucus’s amendments reduced the tax rate while increasing funding for libraries, cultural, youth and service organizations and public safety. The revised budget was adopted by the Legislature at its annual budget meeting on Dec. 2.

Festival of Lights open at Hamburg Fairgrounds

After a week of hard work, snow removal and repairs, the Fairgrounds Festival of Lights is excited to have opened its gates Friday, Dec. 5 for its 10th anniversary. The event kicked off with the lighting of a 35-foot Christmas tree on 42nd Street. The Fairgrounds Festival of Lights will celebrate a decade of holiday magic in Western New York. What began as a drive through only, has expanded to a oneof-a-kind event featuring rides, shows, games, concessions, shopping and of course, Santa! Guests will pay per carload to experience both the two-mile drive through route, as well as the activities on and around 42nd

Street, once they park the car. While walking around, guests will be able to take a photo inside a 16-foot snow globe, take a ride down the inflatable Snowzilla tubing adventure, toast up s’mores around a bonfire and search the 150 trees inside Christmas Tree Forest in an interactive scavenger hunt, among other events and activities. The centerpiece of the event is Santa and new to this year’s Festival of Lights is the 10,000 square-foot North Pole Experience. This walk-through adventure features a town created by elves, Santa’s Workshop, an arctic scene and Santa’s House. The North Pole Experience will be the place for guests to meet Santa and

Mrs. Claus, take photos and check their status on the nice list. Also, new to the festival is the One Buffalo Express. This train ride will take guests up and down 42nd Street and is supported by Pegula Sports and Entertainment. The Fairgrounds Festival of Lights will take place Dec. 6-7, 12-14, 19-23 and 26-28. The festival will open its gates from 5-9 p.m. and will remain open until 10 p.m. Guests who present an original Tops Friendly Markets receipt at the gate will receive $5 off. Christmas concert by Pat Shea at Work is progressing on Arts Cafe Springville Center for the Arts Some people talk the talk about a career in music. Pat Shea walks the walk. As his CD “The Road Less Traveled” details with beautiful and haunting complexity, Shea has journeyed far on what poet Robert Frost called “the one less traveled by.” Shea will bring a Christmas concert to the Mongerson Theater on Dec. 12 at 8 p.m. Presale tickets are available and tickets will be sold at the door. Shea came to the attention of fans across the United States and Canada when he triumphed over nearly 200 other competitors, week after week on the nationally televised Star talent search. Emerging as the champion and grand prize winner, Shea went on to appear numerous times as a guest on the popular television show Nashville Now. Shea was also flown to Fort Worth, Texas to tape an hour long concert at the world famous Billy Bob’s for the televised On Stage series. He recorded his song “The Lord May Take Me” for Polygram Records, which was released to radio nationally and internationally.

Mistaken 911 call leads to treatment and drug charges Brittany Ras, 22, of East Otto was arrested in a Springville hotel on Oct. 27, at 11:15 p.m., by Erie County Sheriff’s deputies. Deputies responded to a call from a hotel worker concerned about the welfare of a guest. Deputies also received a 911 call from the same room, but the caller claimed the call was a mistake. When deputies arrived at the room, they made several attempts to have the

guest respond to their knocking. They heard inaudible mumblings and the guest answered the door. Ras exited the room, closed the door behind her and had difficulty standing. At this time Ras’s mother arrived and granted permission to the deputies to enter the room. Upon entry, the deputies observed blood, several air cleaner cans and recovered a hypodermic needle from the subject. Ras was transported to Erie County Medi-

cal Center for evaluation and treatment. “Addicts are turning to household items to maintain their high but these chemicals can be just as deadly as the narcotics they are using,” explained Erie County Undersheriff Mark Wipperman. Ras was charged with illegal use of toxic vapors, possession of a hypodermic instrument and unlawful possession of a noxious matter. She was released on appearance tickets.

mately $100. The owner of the flower stand was able to provide deputies with video from a security surveillance system setup. In a separate incident at a fruit stand in East Aurora, the suspect entered a garage through an unlocked door and pried open a locked box

containing proceeds from produce sales. Beyor was charged with petit larceny, attempted petit larceny, criminal mischief and criminal mischief with intent to damage property. Beyor was released on separate appearance tickets for the respective town courts.

Dr. Peter Spinks For 44 years, the Boston Veterinary Clinic was a fixture in the heart of Boston. Dr. Edward Nowak opened the practice in 1968 and continued operating it until his retirement in 2012. Recently, Dr. Peter Spinks purchased the practice and is thrilled to announce that it will re-open on Dec. 8. Dr. Spinks grew up in East Aurora. He received his Bachelor of Science from Cornell University in 1986 and graduated from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine in 1990. After one year of practice in Virginia, he returned to Western New York and has practiced here for the last 23 years, working with and learning from many area veterinarians along the way. Before opening the practice, Dr. Spinks engineered a massive renovation of the building. He and his wife, Jen, worked closely with a

local contractor to complete the facelift. In addition to refurbishing the interior, Dr. Spinks has added many upgrades including enhanced radiology capabilities, inhouse blood testing, new dental equipment and computerization. Dr. Spinks will be assisted by a licensed veterinary technician with extensive experience. They may be reached at 941-5159. The practice will be open from 8 a.m. – 6 p.m., Monday through Friday and on Saturday mornings. “Having grown up in a small community, the friendly atmosphere of the Boston area really appeals to me and my family,” Dr. Spinks said. I am looking forward to bringing a comprehensive range of veterinary services to this practice, while still maintaining the intimate atmosphere and close client bonds that Dr. Nowak was known for.”
