Rod, Gun & Game: Chilly opening day for WNY deer season By Forrest Fisher OUTDOOR COLUMNIST
Last Saturday, opening day of big game firearm season in NYS, temperatures in the southern tier hills of Western New York fell far below the freezing mark as they hit 18 and 19 degrees. In valley areas, the northwest wind of 10 to 20 miles per hour brought out the hand warmers, long johns and pull-over hats in high visibility orange color as standard gear for several hundred thousand hunters that take to the NYS woods every year on opening day. For some that came less than well-prepared with “keepwarm” gear, the walk into the woods and back to the car or deer camp cabin did not take very long. I hunted in Wildlife Management Unit 9W near Friendship, New York, with my 13 year-old grandson alongside sharing in the heritage of the opening day hunting experience. We whispered back and forth to each other, trying to not think about just exactly how cold the chill factor actually was, but I was shivering after 3 hours. We were in an elevated tree stand (weather-unprotected), safely tethered to a sturdy hickory tree, so we were experiencing the full brunt of the frigid breeze. With four inches of crunchy snow on the ground helping the visibility for all opening day hunters, we counted about a half-

dozen gunshot sounds before the official sunrise moment to underscore the easy viewing. Then from sunrise through 8:00 a.m., we noted about 40 or 50 more shots in the distances from our location. At least some folks were seeing deer! When your tree stand happens to be in a non-deer location, the cold seems colder, the wind seems windier and the time seems to pass very slowly, but there are other things about nature to take stock in. Hunting is not really all about killing deer, it’s also about sharing time with friends and family, watching nature at work, understanding heritage and history, home cooked meals, camp coffee and honest time away from the e-link we all have these days. We watched three flocks of snow geese soar high above as they flew past our tree stand heading southward, a while later we watched several black squirrels scamper about in their treasure hunt for a breakfast of beech nuts and white oak acorns, and there were blue jays, partridge, and an assortment of other small birds that are wintering over with us, working their way through the day to stay warm and comfortable. There was a wonderful ambience of harmony among wildlife in the woods. At our camp, nine hunters from as far away as Florida (Jeff Liebler), joined bantering friendship forces on this opening weekend. None of us was lucky enough to see or score on a deer. Other nearby deer

Opening weekend for deer season in WNY was successful for happy hunter, Dieter Voss, an East Aurora resident, who braved the chilly weather to find this handsome 8-point buck in the hills near Colden. camp groups did harvest deer, as their location was perfect for the moving deer when opening day sunrise occurred. Yes, there is some degree of location luck to be sure! Hot locations are largely based on available food sources for the doe deer (females), and when the rut is peaking - like it did this past weekend, the bucks will be near the does that are near the prime available food sources. Food
plot hunters scored big. Dieter Voss, an East Aurora resident, hunted from his 16foot fixed tree stand in the Colden hills near a familiar deer trail with access to a large, cold-weather food plot, and was among the successful scores of NYS deer hunters. Voss used a 12-guage Remington 870 shotgun and old-style, nonsabotted, foster slugs, to down a handsome 8-point buck at only
about 20 yards. Voss had seen this same deer twice during the archery season and admitted, “My heart was pounding so fast, I was not sure I could get the fingers in my two-layer gloves ready to take an effective shot in time when the deer stopped in my narrow shooting lane. I was able to regain my calm to make a good shot, but right after that, I think my heart rate must have
been wild! The deer fell only a few yards away. I waited 30 minutes before going down and suddenly, I was not cold anymore!” The big buck was only the second deer that Voss has taken with a firearm in his eight years of firearm hunting, he scored on a doe last year in the same approximate location, but he says, “I really enjoy the warmer weather of archery season.” Voss has scored on three deer with his bow, adding, “Hunting for deer, especially with a bow, is so relaxing. Just getting out there to see the wildlife we always can watch even when the deer don’t show up is great.” Voss teaches high school in Tonawanda. A short trip to the NYSDEC Deer Check Station in Holland provided much information about the deer, including that it was 3-1/2 years old and weighed approximately 190 pounds field dressed. DEC wildlife biologist, Emilio Rende, said the deer had also sustained several old wounds on his neck from fighting other bucks earlier in the season. In his always friendly and jovial voice tone, Rende added, “We collected data on about 75 deer for opening day Saturday and about that same number for Sunday, making it a typical and successful opening day weekend for WNY.” One thing for everyone in the community to remember, deer hunters make our roadways safer for travel for all of us every hunting season. Not everyone can do it. Thank a deer hunter today!
Talented artist Schichtel earns ECIC All-Star honors as cross country athlete By Emyle Watkins SPORTS REPORTER
Francis Schichtel of Springville is someone most known for his talents in art and music. A regular participant in the Immaculata and Springville musicals, he also enjoys theater, chorus and photography, among other arts. Something some may not know about the talented Springville High School senior is that he’s a top cross country runner. Schichtel was one of four boys on his team to receive ECIC second team All-Star honors at ECICs and placed 14th out of 50 running in Division IV in the ECIC championships. “Whenever I run, it just makes me feel good for the entire day,” Schichtel said. “It relaxes me and my body feels refreshed as well.” Schichtel said that his running career started at a young age and that he wouldn’t be in the place he is now without the help and support of his family. “My family was definitely my biggest influence,” he said. “They push me and make sure I’m giving it my all and I appreciate that.” His running career started at St. Peter & Paul Catholic
School in Hamburg when he was in third grade. The idea of trying something new excited the young student, and he jumped into the new activity after just transferring to the school. From the start of his career, he pushed himself to be better, with his family whole-heartedly behind him the entire way. “My sister ran with me everyday until she left for college and she trains with me over the summer,” Schichtel said. “My dad brought me to the track every morning before school to get extra miles in.” After completing his years at St. Peter and Paul, Schichtel moved up to St. Francis, where he continued his running career for two years before transferring to Springville High School early in his junior year. “I loved St. Petes and I loved running and doing musicals at Frannies,” Schictel noted. “Those schools were completely different from Springville. It was weird joining cross country halfway through the season during my junior year but I was warmly welcomed.” Transferring, much like racing, started with some nerves, but ended with a place that felt much more comfortable for him. “I was definitely scared to go to a public school for the first time ever, and I felt left out for like a week,” Schichtel said. “Then I joined Theatre class and I

“He made me feel welcomed when I first got to Springville, which was the best part,” Schichtel said. “This year he has pushed me to improve every week.” Schichtel’s high school running career may have came to a close with a strong season, but he hopes
to be out and running again soon. He’d like to continue running in college, as he hopes to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology, Pratt Institute, or Parson’s The New School for Design in the fall as an art major.

Springville Elementary students donate 277 hats to children in need
PHOTO SUBMITTED
Springville Elementary students are shown with the hats they collected for kids battling cancer.
From Oct. 14 - 24, students at Springville Elementary School collected new hats to donate to children with cancer. The project was a joint effort between SES Student Council and Earth Scouts of Western New York, who prepared for the drive by making flyers, posters and decorating collection boxes, which were placed inside the school. Additionally, the school held Crazy Hat Day on Oct.
17, in which students wore their craziest hat to school to promote the event. This is the third year the hat drive has take place at SES. In its previous two years, about 400 hats were collected. This year, 711 hats were collected, almost triple the amount collected in 2013. The SES hat drive concluded on Oct. 24 and a few days later, students and teachers assembled to package the hats with ribbons
Mills’ hot dog roasts raise a total $9,650 Erie County Legislator John Mills announces that the grand total for the 2014 Library Hot Dog Roast Fundraisers is $9,650, an increase of 3.8 percent from 2013. Mills held his first hot dog roast fundraiser eight years ago and has raised $47,811 during that period of time. “I was very pleased to see that the 2014 total surpassed last year’s, raising additional funds for the libraries in my district. These events are a success thanks to the support of the community and I wish to thank each and every person who attended the roasts this year and supported the cause. Over the years, the libraries have used the funds to improve the quality of programming and materials that are offered to patrons. As budgets become tighter, these additional funds allow the libraries to look at their ‘wish lists’ and find areas where they would like to improve but need a little outside help,” said Legislator Mills. “Next year we’ll definitely surpass the $50,000 mark, an incredible accomplishment from a simple idea. I hope to see everyone again next year as we aim to beat this year’s record.” Since first being elected to the legislature, Mills has hosted fundraisers from 2007-2014 for: Collins - $7,555; Concord - $8,917; Orchard Park - $7,424; and West FallsColden - $7,831. In 2012, the Legislature was redistricted and Legislator Mills’ district was expanded to include, Angola - $3,257; Boston - $2,782; Eden - $3,128; and North Collins - $2,840. Following redistricting, the town of Aurora was removed from Legislator Mills’ district; however he held fundraisers there from 2007-2011, raising $4,077. West Falls-Colden Library is a community library which does not receive county funding. Through an agreement with the library volunteers and Legislator Joseph Lorigo, who represents Colden, Mills continues to host the fundraiser annually. The funds raised have been used for a variety of purposes, including new furniture, building expansions, programming and special guests and materials.
and tags. The hats were donated to Women and Children’s Hospital in Buffalo and will be distributed to local children with cancer. “This is our third year involved with this project and with each year it gets bigger and better,” said Norbert Bukowski, first grade teacher at SES and one of two student council advisors. “Our students have learned through the years the importance of caring for others even if it just begins
with a hat.” “One of the behaviors we, as adults, can model is that we support others in their time of need,” added Marcole Feuz, SES principal. “Our students and families gave graciously, knowing that these hats were going to children in need. This community always rises to the occasion to support others in need. It never ceases to amaze me. What a tremendous gift we were able to give to so many.”

Braden, his wife Judith, and their two children live in Cattaraugus.
New hours for pistol permit office With the goal of reducing the time it takes to get a pistol permit in Erie County, County Clerk Chris Jacobs announced that beginning Dec. 3, the Pistol Permit Office will be closed to the public on Wednesdays to process new applications. This initiative comes just after Jacobs and his team completed a comprehensive re-engineering analysis of the Pistol Permit Department. “After the enactment of the NYSAFE Act we took in as many new pistol permit applications in the first four months as we did the entire previous year. It was unprecedented,” said Jacobs. “We needed to determine what processes we could modify to improve the overall function of this office; primarily improving the time it takes to obtain a pistol permit.” The Re-Engineering Project, led by Karen Kirbis, a loaned executive from Audubon Machinery, identified several system enhancements that optimized resources currently available. It also identified that with current staffing levels, it is not possible to handle the necessary back office operations involved in processing a new pistol permit application, while also servicing over 100 customers a day. “Our sole function on Wednesdays will be to process pistol permit applications and to get the files ready to send to the judge for approval,” stated Will Fowler, supervisor of the Pistol Permit Department. “Our time will be spent working on new pistol permit applications, preparing files to go to police agencies for background checks and updating current permit holder information in our system. Activities that cannot currently be done efficiently when trying to take care of the volume of customers we assist on a daily basis.” Since the passage of the NYSAFE Act, it has taken between 12-15 months to obtain a pistol permit in Erie County. “Our goal with the new office hours is to cut the time it takes to obtain a permit by 50 percent,” said Fowler. “We believe that by making this small change in our hours, the end result will be a benefit to the many Erie County residents interested in obtaining a pistol permit,” stated Jacobs. The hours for the Pistol Permit Department on the other days of the week will remain 9 a.m.- 4:45 p.m..

Erie County motorists reminded about safe winter driving
Couple said “I do” on Nov. 15
The following is a guest column by Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs: Every start to the winter season, you promise yourself that this year will be different, that you’ll be ready for whatever blizzard Mother Nature sends us. We all know that winter driving can be a test for even expert drivers and you need to be prepared at all times. Before a storm hits, take a moment to review a few simple winter driving tips and double-check that you have the proper emergency gear in your vehicle to ensure your safety. Not all drivers are prepared for winter driving conditions, so take it slow when driving on snowy or icy roadways. Drive as the environment warrants, stay alert and reduce your speed. Due to poor visibility and/ or bad road conditions, always leave plenty of room between cars. Brake early and slowly, giving yourself

DPW ready for winter The Erie County Department of Public Works’ Highways Division reports readiness to handle Mother Nature’s wintriest offerings this season with a force of 40 primary snow plows equipped and ready for action this weekend, with five new vehicles to be added to the fleet starting in the last week of November. The new arrivals are equipped with salters and plows, and four of the five are heavyduty, tandem-axle trucks featuring all-wheel drive. Since 2011, the DPW has fully replaced 50 PECENT of the primary fleet of snow plowing vehicles. “With the arrival of wintry weather, I want to remind residents that Erie County crews are fully equipped and already busy clearing snow in some areas of the County, particularly in the southern reaches,” said Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz. “My administration takes public safety very seriously and understands the responsibility that comes with it when it comes to readiness, responsiveness and reliability in keeping the roads clear. Many municipalities across Erie County are joining forces with us to keep county roads clear and
residents safe this winter, and for those that are a part of the team, I say thank you for sharing our commitment to public safety. Just like last year, we are prepared for the worst that winter can ‘snow’ at us.” The four new all-wheel drive trucks will be added to the two already in Erie County’s snow removal fleet. These trucks are essential for operations in the hill country and in southern Erie County where snows are typically heavier. In addition, these trucks can be used throughout the year, rather than the winter-only all-wheel drive vehicles purchased in years past. A new high lift was also purchased along with the five new trucks, bringing the total investment in snowremoval equipment to nearly $1.4 million. In response to a colderthan-normal winter in 201314, DPW has also built up its road salt stocks from a year ago. In 2014, 17,000 tons of salt were ordered but over 34,000 tons of salt were used throughout the winter due to harsh conditions. In 2015, DPW has 25,000 tons of salt available for usage on area roadways, with plans to procure more should conditions warrant.

de-icing washer fluid, oil, power steering and antifreeze. Change or adjust spark plugs, air, fuel and emission filters. Check your headlights, brake and tail lights, blinkers and emergency flashers. If you ever get stuck in the winter season, be prepared by keeping these emergency items handy in your vehicle: a spare tire, wheel wrench, jack, shovel, jumper cables, tow and tire chains, salt or cat litter, working flashlight with extra batteries, bright cloth, first aid kit, ice scraper and snow brush. Extra clothing such as gloves, socks and hats, a blanket, a 12 volt charger for a cell phone, as well as non-perishable foods and bottles of water or juice are vital, should you become stranded. Being prepared is the best offense against winter driving. Take it slow, be safe and buckle up. Additional safe driving tips can be found on the Erie County Clerk’s website www.erie.gov/clerk.

time to stop and react safely. Keep a full tank of gas along with gas in your vehicle at all times. Before pulling onto the road, be sure to completely clear snow and ice from your car windows, mirrors, lights, hood and roof. Don’t use cruise control in inclement weather as the slightest touch of your brakes to deactivate can cause loss of vehicle control. Take extra precaution when entering and exiting ramps and bridges as they can be extremely slippery. While four-wheel drive vehicles may help you get going quicker, they won’t help you stop any quicker – don’t get overconfident when driving. Make sure your car is properly maintained – the better shape your car is in, the safer you are on the road. Have your battery and ignition system checked, along with your brakes, transmission and tires. All fluids in your vehicle should be checked and topped off:
