Springville upsets top team in Class B South on Senior Night By Emyle Watkins SPORTS REPORTER
Ask any player on the Springville-GI varsity football team what the term “Purple Reign” means to them, and they’ll let you know that Springville is not an “easy win.” This past Friday (Oct. 10), the Griffins proved exactly that as they scored a 28-23 win over Class B South’s first-place team, East Aurora/Holland, which entered the game undefeated in league play. “It’s a very satisfying win as we were able to defeat a very good football team,” head coach Rob Valenti said. “It’s a testament as to how hard our kids have worked all year.” Springville held the lead for much of the game and was behind for just a portion of the second quarter. “Honestly, it wasn’t a surprise to me,” SGI quarterback and senior Devin White-Kearns said. “I knew we were a better team. I felt confident in my guys and myself going into the game, and it turned out how I expected it to.” Springville opened the scoring when junior Jake Smith ran 4 yards to the end zone for the first touchdown of his varsity career. After a successful 2-point conversion by Dalton Nelson, the Griffins held an 8-0 first-quarter lead. EastAurora took a 9-8 lead to the half, but the Griffins came out of the break firing and in the third quarter alone they scored 20 points. One of Springville’s thirdquarter touchdowns was scored by Ian Baker. Baker, just a sophomore, caught a 15-yard touchdown strike from White-Kearns. He had a strong day, finishing with 10 carries for 64 yards in the second half. The other two touchdowns for Springville were scored

Jake Smith’s first career touchdown opened the scoring in Springville’s 28-23 upset victory over East Aurora/Holland on Oct. 10. by White-Kearns, who had a solid day on the ground in addition to his touchdown pass. White-Kearns, a bullet on the field, rushed 13 times for 111 yards, surpassing the 1,000yard mark on the season. He was named the Class B South WGRZ Player of the Week for
his performance. “I think Devin’s greatest strength is his quickness and ability to run,” Valenti said. “He has made some pretty spectacular plays through the course of the season. There have been instances where he should have been sacked for a
variety of reasons and instead, he’s running down the field for a TD.” White-Kearns describes his coaching staff as an important part of Springville’s success. “[Valenti] just is an amazing coach and an amazing guy,” White-Kearns said. “He
teaches us to be disciplined with a little swagger, to keep everyone on their toes. Fundamentals are an everyday thing and we get after it.” Defensively, the Griffins held strong to preserve their 28-23 lead heading into the fourth quarter. Devin Pazzuti
led the team with nine tackles against the Blue Devils while Kyle Schultz, Bryce Szudzik and Josh Ball added fumble recoveries.

Springville drops hard-fought decision to Eden in overtime By Emyle Watkins SPORTS REPORTER
EMYLE WATKINS
Springville fell to Eden, 2-1, in overtime in Oct. 11. The Griffins have had a new-look team of late.
On Saturday (Oct. 11), the Springville boys soccer team — complete with several players recalled from JV and modified — played a game at Eden, losing in overtime, 2-1, to the Raiders. Senior Owen Gow scored the Griffins’ (1-7-1 ECIC IV, 2-11-1) lone goal in the second half to tie things up, but Eden’s Adam Mbula scored early in the extra session to give the Raiders the win. Springville Zach Heary, a sophomore, made 10 saves in his varsity goalkeeping debut. “Zach [Heary] had a great attitude about the opportunity to play keeper,” Springville coach Thomas Szczerbacki said. “He only had one day to prepare and I thought he handled the situation tremendously and he put himself in good positions to make some big saves.”
With many players absent due to injury, Springville has begun to pull JV and modified players up to varsity. The influx of new talent has helped the Griffins play a more competitive game. “I thought we needed more competition and motivation to improve the team,” Szczerbacki said. “Bringing these boys up first, they can play the game, and hopefully push some other guys to pick up their game.” Against the Raiders, because of the injuries, Springville moved a majority of players out of their regular positions, which gave a chance for several Griffins to strut their versatility. Justus Hamm, usually strong on defense, was one of those players. He played at forward alongside Gow and even earned an assist on Gow’s goal. “Putting Hamm at forward was made because he has a good touch with the ball and I was hoping he could create a little offensively for us,” Szczerbacki said.

West Valley homecoming held
WVCS seniors during the flag football game held during Homecoming. West Valley Central School had its homecoming festivities two weeks ago with many different class battles to promote school spirit and fun in the school. Many of the students stepped out of their normal boundaries to “switch genders,” become “super heroes” and become the athlete of
their dreams. For the Pep Rally on Friday, the nominations for the 2014 Homecoming Court were announced, with Callie McRae and Jacob Ploetz as King and Queen. Like last year, some of the homecoming activities continued, like the Fall Fest, which brought the community
in with a bake sale, Chinese auction, and local musical talents. The students also walked the grounds in different decade costumes to match their float themes this year. The seniors had the 1960s and their float was Woodstock. They supported their float with a “Janis Joplin” and other vintage items.
The juniors had the 1950s, and their float theme was “Grease.” The sophomores had the 1980s, and the freshman had the 1970s. The winners of the float competition were the seniors. Almost all of the students turned out for this, which made their Class Brawn even more competitive than last year. The seniors also once again won the Class Brawn for the second year in a row, while the sophomores got disqualified for having juniors in on their tug line. Following Fall Fest, each of the classes met at 9 a.m. that Saturday morning before the dance for one last competition — flag football. It was quite a sight seeing all of the students there, supporting each other, even if they were playing against each other. The final point tally for the flag football is the following: 80 – seniors, 60 – juniors, 40 – sophomores, and 20 – freshman.
O’Brien strong in final home game Football from page B1 Valenti was impressed with Schultz’s play in his first varsity start on defense. “Kyle Schultz made his first varsity start on defense and played well,” he said. “He came up with a huge fumble recovery during the game.” Senior Pat O’Brien had 69 carries on nine rushes. O’Brien described the night as especially memorable to him, as the seniors also celebrated senior night and the team held a Pink Out for Breast Cancer Awareness. “It was my last home game.” O’Brien said. “I had to play my heart out. I’ve played on that field for a decade and now I’ll never play on it again, so I had to play my heart out. “I will remember prevail-
ing through all the doubt and coming out with the win. We were predicted to be blown out and it feels great to prove everyone wrong. I’ll remember how we all rose together and stood up to the No. 1 team in Class B [South] and won, I’ll remember walking out on the field with my mom and all the people wearing pink supporting her and breast cancer awareness, and I’ll remember sitting on the field with a feeling of sadness but still feeling satisfied with how we went out.” The boys and coaches all agreed that they’d like to finish the season 6-3. They took on Salamanca Friday, Oct. 17 on the road. Results weren’t immediately available.

JV Griffins win two in a row
DAVE DELUCA
Connor O’Brien and the Springville JV football team won their Week 4 and 5 games. In Week 4, the JV Griffins defeated Pioneer on the road, 29-12. The first half of the game was a defensive battle with the panthers forcing several Griffin turn overs. The Griffins’ defense was up to the challenge and held off the Pioneer attack and put one in the end zone themselves. Freshman Kyle Albrecht played a Pioneer screen perfectly, intercepting it and taking it to the end zone for a 26-yard touchdown, giving the Griffins a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Freshman Devin Bruno intercepted a Pioneer pass and had a 10-yard return to set up the Griffins’ first offensive touchdown when sophomore quarterback Connor O’Brien ran for a score to put the Griffins up 13-0. O’Brien finished the game with 120 yards on 13 carries and two touchdowns. The Panthers were able to get a touchdown late in the second quarter after a Panther broke two tackles on a deep pass and the Griffins led 13-6 at the half. On Springville’s first possession of the second half, O’Brien scored his second rushing touchdown of the day and Devin Bruno rushed for the 2-point conversion to give the team a 21-6 edge. Eighth-grader Sean Barry had the team’s next touchdown on an 8-yard run and followed it up with a 2-point conversion, giving the griffins a 29-6 lead. Barry finished the game with 119 yards on nine carries. Also helping the Griffins on the ground were freshman
Shaun Wright with 68 yards and freshman Jeremy Baker with 47 yards. The defense was led in tackles by KyleAlbrecht, who had 10, while freshman Ryan Smith had nine tackles and a pair of sacks. In Week 5, the Griffins were back at home to play Dunkirk. One week after the defense held the opponent down until the offense got on track, it was the offense’s time to return the favor and it did so in a 31-24 victory for the Griffins. Poor pursuit angles and gap responsibilities allowed the Marauders to take the lead in the first quarter and carry an 18-13 lead to the half. In the second half, the defense settled down and shut the Dunkirk offense out until the game was in hand late in the fourth quarter. The Griffins’offense was led on the ground by Bruno with nine carries for 119 yards and a touchdown. O’Brien added another 101 on 10 carries and a touchdown and Barry had six carries for 60 yards and two touchdowns. The Griffins’ defense was by led Smith, who had nine tackles and three sacks, and sophomore Marcus Ballowe, who chipped in 3.5 sacks and three tackles for a loss. Sophomore Zach Slippy was second on the team in tackles with eight. Barry had seven and a sack and sophomore Trevor Bunch Albrecht each contributed a half a sack a piece. On special teams, freshman Mike Hannon had a big day, frustrating the Dunkirk return team and recovering one of his own kicks.

Springville JV spikers beat East Aurora, Cheektowaga, improve to 11-1 The Springville girls volleyball team completed a season sweep of the Cheektowaga Warriors on Wednesday (Oct. 15) with a straight-sets win. The girls started off slowly in the first game, falling behind 9-4, but responded by winning that game 25-15. Emma Hawkes was excellent from the service line and at the net to help lead the Lady Griffins. Game 2 saw a dominant
performance by the girls, who won, 25-4. Caroline Roy was outstanding at the net and Lexy Sopko was a steady passer from the back row to ensure the win. The girls won Game 3 thanks to the solid setting of Meg Poppenberg and excellent overall play by Jena Lehr. Jena and Jess Roggie combined for a thunderous back row hit to energize the team to a big 2520 victory.
The girls were 11-1 at press time with a match at Holland on Oct. 16 scheduled. Springville ran its record to 10-1 after a clutch 3-0 win against the East Aurora Blue Devils the night before. The girls handled the Blue Devils with ease in Game 1, winning 25-14. Sara Zimmer was a force at the net and Hawkes was outstanding from the service line.
Game 2 was much different as the girls were pushed all game before winning, 25-18. That game saw Lehr pass the ball well and serve five consecutive points to lead the team to the win. It was a clean sweep after a 25-19 win in the third game, which saw Jess Roggie control the tempo of play and Poppenberg hit ace after ace to ensure the win.
It helped that he got to play alongside a player of Gow’s caliber. “Gow is such a strong player,” Szczerbacki said. “He sees the field so well, anticipates the play and creates opportunities for his teammates to be successful.” Matt Scion, a new addition, has proven to be a capable player for the Griffins since he was called up. The freshman has been playing defense for the team. “Matt has only a few games under his belt at the varsity level but has played very well for us the last couple games,” Szczerbacki said. “He has improved defensively to anticipate and read the play more effectively and be in a better position to make a play, which has helped his game.” Dustin Emerson, a senior, admitted he and his teammates still have work to do and believes they could have done better against Eden. “Our defense is doing great,” Emerson said. “We need to start getting our offense to convert more,

Collin Harrigan and Springville fell to Eden but defeated Global Concepts. which could lead to a solid win.” The Griffins did convert more a few days later. They improved to 3-11-1 overall when they defeated Global Concepts, 3-2, on Oct. 15. Emerson, Heary and Gow all found the back of the net for Springville. The team played Lackawanna in its final league game of the season on Oct. 16. Results weren’t available at press time.

The Springville boys and girls cross country teams aimed high Tuesday night (Oct. 14), looking to earn a division championship, but fell short in a close meet against Alden. The Lady Griffins lost to the Lady Bulldogs, 23-36, while the Griffins fell to the Bulldogs, 25-32. “It went pretty much as planned,” Springville coach Chad Russell said. “It was a close match, it would have been nice if it was a little closer, but our girls did well and our guys did phenomenal, so I’m happy with what they did.” Leading runners for Springville were Mitch Bunic and Elle Russell, who each finished first in their respective races. Bunic crossed19:33 and Russell came in at 21:55. Trailing shortly behind Bunic was Francis Schichtel, who ran a tough 19:53 and placed second. “I worked really hard. I pushed myself,” Schichtel said. “There’s still a few more races, so we’ll see what happens.” Along with Russell, McKenzie Malloy ran an impressive

race, coming in at 22:30 and placing second among the girls. “I don’t want to individualize anyone, I just think a lot of the players on the teams, both guys and girls did well,” Russell said. Among other runners displaying top times for the boys were Brad Zifra, Don Piatek and Tyler Olrogg. Piatek led the trio with a time of 20:15, Olrogg came in closely after at 20:34 and Zifra followed with 20:49. “Mr. Russell’s been cheering us along, everyone’s been so supportive,” Schichtel noted. On the girls side, other powerful times were held by Joelle Adamzyck (23:39), Samantha Fruehauf (26:07), Megan Loop (26:10) andAshley Broeneman (26:58). Despite this tough loss, the Griffins are not giving up hope. “We have another chance to compete with Alden at ECICs, and if they win that, we would be co-champs,” Russell said. Russell said that he has hopes even higher than that set for the remainder of the season. “I’d really like to push our top seven on the guys and the girls and see if we can get them ready for the end of the season when it matters a little more, so hopefully we can get someone to quxalify for states this year,” Russell said. Springville competed in the Eden Invitational at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 17.

Hartman helps S-GI to first-ever ECIC IV championship By Dave DeLuca SPORTS REPORTER
The Springville tennis team came into the fall looking to make some noise. And with one accomplishment after another, did they ever. A 4-1 victory over Eden on Oct. 7 clinched a share of the ECIC IV title, which is first division crown in program history. Team captain Gabby Hartman finished the season 12-0 and has qualified for the Section VI championships; both accomplishments are believed to be firsts in school history. “It was kind of a surreal week,” Hartman said. “Being the first girl from Springville to go undefeated, being part of the first team from Springville to win a division title is just awesome.” With six returning starters from a year ago, the Lady Griffs entered the season with high expectations after finishing 8-7. “We knew it was a possibility and we knew we just had to try out best,” Hartman said. “I think what set us apart from other teams was our mental strength. We really wanted to win more than the other teams. And when we got down, that didn’t mess with our mental game” The division title is shared with East Aurora, as both teams finished 5-1 in league play. East Aurora and Springville split their two games against each other. Springville finished 9-3 overall with two

Springville head coach Frank Noeson leaned on his four senior starters. “Our success was definitely due in part to senior leadership,” Noeson said. “With four seniors in the starting seven, our experience and mental toughness won a lot of matches for us. We outworked a lot of op-
ponents and were far more consistent.” While Hartman held down first singles, Kayla Haberer took over second singles as the season progressed and Keri Frank played third singles, with Haberer finishing 11-1. Jordan Story and Kourtney Keyes played first doubles and Molly Staebell teamed up with Kaylee Timmel in second
doubles. With five matches deciding the outcome of every match, they couldn’t just rely on Hartman and Haberer to carry them. “Really it was a complete team effort that lead to our success,”Noeson said. “We relied heavily on our seniors, who had been in tough matches before to pull us through any close matches.” Hartman has played first
singles for the past four years and has been on varsity since 7th grade. The senior standout has made the trip to ECIC’s for five consecutive years, however, she wasn’t able to get over the hump and advance to sectionals until this year. “My overall game has stayed the same, but like I said before, I’ve definitely improved my mental part of the game,” Hartman said. “I
don’t get down on myself anymore. I forget about the bad points, forget about the good points and just focus on the next point. That has made the difference.” When ECIC’s would roll around every year, Hartman would stress out a little. She’d go into the tournament nervous. “This year, I was just excited to go and play tennis,” Hartman said. “I was just so happy I had the opportunity to go play and I was in a great mood. I think that made a big difference.” Hartman entered ECIC’s seeded eighth out of 30plus girls from teams around Section VI. She won her first two matches against top singles players from large schools West Seneca East and Williamsville East. The 2-0 start clinched a trip to sectionals and the three remaining matches determined seeding. Hartman lost the third and fourth matches to girls from Clarence and Williamsville North, respectively, before winning her fifth match against a girl from Hamburg. “When she dropped points or a game or two, she wasn’t really affected,” Noeson said. “She moved on with confidence knowing she could battle back. Her ground strokes were a huge part of her success as well. The combination of pace and corner location kept her opponents on their heels.” Hartman will travel to Village Glen in Williamsville for sectionals on Oct. 24 and 25, with an opportunity to advance the state competition on Nov. 1. Frank on Haberer will be competing the ECIC’s for doubles on Friday, Oct. 17.
PRO FOOTBALL CORNER
FROM the SIDELINES Bills, ECMC team up to ‘Pink the Falls’, spread awareness By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR
Buffalo Bills long snapper Garrison Sanborn doesn’t mind wearing pink during October. Despite the machismo culture football players are generally bound to, Sanborn — and his teammates — are all in if it means supporting a worthy cause. That notion was validated when Sanborn joined ECMC,
the ECMC Lifeline Foundation and a host of his Bills teammates at the organization’s ninth annual “Billieve” Breast Cancer Awareness event on Oct. 10 in Niagara Falls, New York. Sanborn, EJ Manuel, C.J. Spiller, Corey Graham, Dan Carpenter, Kyle Williams, Scott Chandler and Ron Brooks were among the many Bills players in attendance decked out in their jerseys and finest pink apparel.

EJ Manuel and C.J. Spiller were part of the Living Ribbon on Rainbow Bridge.
And Sanborn had no problem with that. “Anything you can do to draw attention to something like this helps,” Sanborn said. “Even somebody who doesn’t know what the pink is all about is going to ask why all these tough guys on the field are wearing pink. “Now all the sudden they think about it and one kid might say something to his mom and if it saves one life, it’s worth it.” Players weren’t just there to don pink, though. They were active participants in the evening’s festivities and helped form Hard Rock’s International PINKTOBER Living Ribbon across the Rainbow Bridge, which was symbolic of the United States and Canada’s unity in the fight against breast cancer. Breast cancer survivors, participants and Bills players walked from the Hard Rock Cafe on Prospect Street to the Rainbow Bridge. As the Living Ribbon, which spanned the bridge, was formed, Niagara Falls was illuminated pink as a means to further spread awareness. Registered participants paid $30, received a pink pashmina and reserved a spot on the bridge. All proceeds from the Living Ribbon and

Bills kicker Dan Carpenter, a seventh-year NFL veteran, noted how impactful the visual of festivities like the Living Ribbon and the illumination of Niagara Falls can be. “The NFL is on national TV every day,” Carpenter said. “It’s always in the news. Highlights are always on. So anytime you can get
public figures out there wearing pink ribbons, pink shoes, pink gloves, attending this event, interacting with fans, anything to bring awareness, I think it’s a good thing.” For Chandler, the Bills No. 1 tight end, the event is a very good thing. So good, in fact, that he and his wife have attended it for several years running. Chandler’s mother-in-law is a breast cancer survivor. In addition to her presence at the Billieve event, she — along with many other breast cancer survivors — were
honored during the Bills’ game against the Patriots on Oct. 12. “She got to come to the event and be on the field with the survivors as we ran onto the field,” Chandler said. “So this is something we’re big supporters of and we’re really being there for the survivors here tonight.” After the Living Ribbon was formed, Kiss 98.5’s Nicholas Picholas emceed a two-band outdoor concert featuring The Diva Show and The Spazmatics 80s Tribute Band.

Time to enjoy bountiful fall outdoors
Last time I checked, the calendar was flipped over to July, then just yesterday I had to pinch myself as I realized we are heading into the middle of October. Holy cow! Time flies when you’re having fun in Western New York! It can happen just that way when you’re blinded by the sunshine days of summer and then one day you wake up and the thermometer says 31 degrees! That was Sunday morning. I think there was freezer burn on the left side of my brain, but my better half, Fern, said all I needed to do is go fishing for Lake Erie yellow perch and it should cure itself. Why argue with the boss? So that’s what we did Sunday, my grandson and I, and my good friend, 73-yearsyoung, retired charter captain Jerry May. We hitched up my Sylvan outboard and headed to Sturgeon Point. A quick telephone check with the Lake Erie fishcatching advisor, Ted Malota, helped us decide where to drop lines to start. We headed west from the Sturgeon Point marina to about 5 miles out in 65 feet of water. To our surprise, we found some 20 other boats out there in our secret perch fishing grounds! They must have checked in with Ted, too! My aging Lowrance LMS-350A hi-tech fish plotter from the mid-1990s was on the fritz. The GPS was working fine, but the sonar would not return a bottom echo and so it was not possible to see any bait or fish to help narrow down exactly where to anchor in the vast lake. After a few minutes, I made a command decision to initiate a master-reset to the unit in hopes that the re-sync would clear up our sonar afflictions. The problem with this step is that it also removes all previously stored waypoints and all those truly secret fishing spots would only be left to the annals of my memory, not necessarily a good thing. We had to do it, we needed to see the bottom to find the bait and the fish we were hoping to catch. I switched to the menu page that contained the reset pulse command and winced my jaw a bit as my index finger connected with the touch screen. A gentle beep sound greeted us and I winced a bit, thinking about all those incredible fishing spots on GPS that were just wiped away, but my brief discomfort was greeted by a highly sensitive bottom echo. Yes! It worked, we could see bottom! In zoom mode, we could also see bait fish and minnows, sea fleas and yes, big fish too, schools of perch and other species. After the high winds from several days before, the lake was not in the best clear-water state of conditions either. There was a bit of color, stained slightly greenishgray in color, but visibility was about seven or eight feet, not the usual 20 feet or so. I dropped an Aqua-Vu camera probe over the side and with the 5-inch color screen, we could see there was fair clarity top to bottom. There was no mineral layer yet, as usually forms in fall when the lake turns over with the onset of winter-like mornings. When that happens, the fish are often 20 feet off the bottom, and you need to fish “high.” With conditions in consideration, we set up with chartreuse-colored blades on two-hook spreader rigs and the famous Malota two-

After 45 minutes in the first spot, there was little action, so we decided to move around and try to find a more active spot. Not far away, about ½ mile west, we found better bait pods and decided to drop anchor there. In less than a minute Jerry had a double and my grandson hooked into several nice fish too. While the Buffalo Bills were hosting the Patriots for first place, we were catching some nice perch, but we were all a little upset with ourselves that we for-
got the radio. As we caught some 50 fish in three sunfilled and wind-free hours, we headed for the dock. Yo u k n o w o n e g o o d thing about fishing with old friends? You talk about all the good things that have happened in the last 50 years! The friends you both know, some of the folks who have passed that you both miss (Joe Jemiolo, Norby Antonik, Rusty Hayne, Len Bigay, Art Wind, so many others), you laugh, you respect each other’s conversation, you yelp at jokes, share thoughts and new ideas, share fish-catching tricks you each have learned, talk
about changes that might be needed for the annual Southtowns Walleye contest, and if you are lucky enough to have a youngster on board, the whole trip is so much more special. Fishing trips like this are unforgettable. It’s yellow perch time right now and it’s your best time to stock the freezer. Get out on the water with a good friend soon! Fall Sporting Seasons Begin The big game archery season for deer and bear opened on Oct. 1 and will run through Nov. 14, the snow goose season opened Oct. 1 and will run through Jan. 25, the western zone duck season opened up Oct. 13, Canada goose season opens Oct. 25, southern tier big game firearm season for deer and bear will open Nov. 15. Don’t forget to test fire your firearms before hunting, check your safety gear, check that your ammo is right for your firearm, and plan for a safe hunt. There is still lots of colorful autumn foliage in full bloom and it is a good time to scout your firearm hunting areas in the southern tier. the potential that these areas provide, the County Department of Economic Development, Planning and Tourism is interested in developing new trails and connecting existing trails in the County. Crystal Abers, director of the department, explains, “We have a number of high quality trails in our county, and more trail systems are being proposed in quite a few other locations. We are looking to connect the existing trails, and grow these networks to develop a complete system of trails within the county.” “We have heard from several different groups interested in developing trails in the county and would like to bring those folks together to discuss what we can do to expand the existing networks of trails and trail users.
