The Mentholatum Company operated a factory on Niagara Street in the city from 1919 to 1997. Today you’ll find the company on Sterling Drive off Milestrip Road in Orchard Park. in Orchard Park? The Mentholatum Company, which operates its North American headquarters on Sterling Drive off Milestrip Road, is today one of the top manufacturers of skin care products in the world. The company, along with its parent company, Japan-based Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., also manufacture Oxy acne medication, WellPatch, Natural Ice lip balm and Hada Labo Tokyo skin care products, among others. But Jean Legros, Mentholatum’s senior director of marketing, notes that while the company has a strong presence in national retailers

and consumers’ minds, they are still dwarfed by some of their competitors, particularly Proctor & Gamble Co., which manufactures the other iconic vapor rub, Vick’s. “Mentholatum competes with giants. It’s like David and Goliath,” said Legros, adding that Mentholatum also competes against the Fortune 500 corporation Johnson & Johnson. However, the company has staked out a position in both the American and international markets through what Legros calls unique, top-quality skin care products. He says the company is in a strong position for

growth; their goal is to double their revenue in the next five years. With this goal in mind, Mentholatum launched two new, innovative products in the last year. The first, the Softlips Cube, promises effective, soothing lip care, and comes in a sleek, trendy design, aimed particularly for the female market. The other is a Nighttime variant of its original vapor rub, with “naturally soothing lavender” to provide gentler cough relief.

“We generally pride ourselves in the passion and the quality of our people to help us develop, produce and market all out of here in Orchard Park,” Legros said. “You talk about Buffalo (as} an All-America City; I like to think that Mentholatum is one of these All-American brands. The Mentholatum Company was founded in 1889 by Albert Alexander Hyde, an early purveyor of the medicinal and topical benefits of menthol. Developing the vapor rub recipe which the company still uses today, he founded a partnership called

The Yucca Company in Wichita, Kan. By 1906, the company changed its name to The Mentholatum Company, following the success of the original Mentholatum Ointment, and had opened an office in Buffalo. Several years later, in 1919, the company opened a factory on Niagara Street in Buffalo. The company found early success by marketing heavily in East Asia; they began selling to Japan in 1913 and today manufacture several of the leading skin care products the region. In 1975, Rohto Pharmaceutical Com-

pany became Mentholatum’s licensee, and in ’88, Rohto purchased Mentholatum. Legros says the two companies “realized (they) had synergies.” Throughout the ’90s, Rohto and Mentholatum began to market a number of innovative new skin care products and opened new factories in the U.K., Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and elsewhere. The company continued to expand its product line throughout the Aughts, and are now anticipating sales of $500 million in 2015. Mentholatum moved to its

current location at 707 Sterling Drive in 1997. There they manufacture and package a number of their popular products. The location also serves as their North American headquarters. And yet, despite manufacturing so many leading and trusted skin care products, Legros still feels as though Mentholatum’s presence goes unknown by most Buffalonians. “Some people know about Mentholatum, but our presence and the knowledge of our presence has been a little bit subdued,” Legros said. Legros pointed out that Mentholatum does much of its sampling locally, and donates to a number of local charities, including the Roycroft Campus Corporation, the Buffalo Zoo, the Food Bank of WNY and the Conners Children Center. The company also employs close to 200 residents, and they expect to create more jobs as they grow. Legros says they appreciate the local support, and very much like their home in the Buffalo region. “Buffalonians are very loyal to products that are made locally, and tend to make an effort to support local products,” Legros said. “As much as we support our local charities, we appreciate the support of Buffalonians.”

For 15 years, Kenmore West High School music director Ken Belote has brought the high school jazz ensemble to elementary schools for special concerts that serve a dual purpose: entertaining and educating. The concerts always take place right before winter recess, and the kindergartenthrough fifth-grade students love the holiday music performed by the jazz ensemble. But they also get introduced to every band instrument they themselves will have the chance to play, and for many, it’s their first exposure to the

instruments. “The philosophy of the concert evolved from strictly entertainment – music only – to entertainment and educational in the last 10 years as we demonstrate every instrument individually and in a small ensemble setting,” Belote said. “This way, the students see and hear every possible instrument that they can play in KenTon schools.” The jazz ensemble performed this year for students at Hamilton Elementary School and Edison Elementary School. In between jazz versions of familiar holiday favorites like

“Jingle Bells” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” Belote’s students demonstrated what each instrument is all about: what it looks like, how it works and what it sounds like. “I thought it was very cool because I’m going to Kenmore West in a few years and I’m going to be in the band,” said Edison Elementary School fifth grader Danny Guetti, who is learning percussion and guitar. In Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda schools, students can begin instrumental music in the Summer Music Camp just prior to entering fourth grade or as fourth graders in the fall. “The sooner they see and hear the instruments the sooner they can pick out what instrument appeals to them,” Belote said. Belote brings additional students to demonstrate

instruments that are not played in the jazz ensemble, like the flute, piccolo, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, French horn, bassoon, euphonium, tuba and mallet percussion. After the performance at Hamilton Elementary, bass clarinet player Sarah Redding could be found showing kindergarten students how it makes different sounds and allowing them to press down on the keys and blow into the instrument. The high school students who take part in the concerts enjoy the experience because they get to share their love of music and it brings them back to the schools they attended when they first began to play, according to Kenmore West senior and flute player Melissa Mazur. “I really like coming back to Edison because this is where my love of music began,” she said.

State Senator Robert Ortt (R,C,I-North Tonawanda) has been named chairman of the Standing Committee on Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities. Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos assigned various committees to each member. The Mental Health Committee focuses on the psychological well-being of individuals, improving mental health care services, and aiding and educating in the prevention of

mental illness. As a military veteran himself, Sen. Ortt understands the difficulties many service men and women face when returning home from combat. “As chairman of the Mental Health and Developmental Disabilities Committee, I will be a fierce advocate for individuals and families in Western New York and across the state who are most in need of compassionate, efficient and effective government.

“For many veterans, the struggles they deal with overseas don’t end when they come home,” said Sen. Ortt. “So many individuals suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression or addiction. These veterans need help landing back on their feet, getting a job and overcoming their inner struggles. As chairman, I’m devoted to leading their fight in helping vets do just that and easing their transition into civilian life.”

it will proceed with these reforms. Budget advisory team members, including Superintendent Dr. James Newton, expressed displeasure as this makes it harder for districts to plan their budgets. “If the legislature cannot come to an agreement on these proposals, then the governor has proposed school aid for both 2015-16 and 2016-17 will be held to the amount of school aid districts received in the 2014-15 school year,” Harris said. Currently, Harris is budgeting as if the district will receive the same amount of state aid it received this year, and she proposed conservative numbers. “I will proceed with the state aid from 201415,” she said. “It is my hope that this will be resolved and we will receive an increase in state aid, but considering nothing has been settled, it is best to proceed forward cautiously.” Harris said the district met with BOCES last Wednesday to go over its 2015-16 budget. Currently, BOCES does not have all its budget prices available, although Harris said she hopes to have this ready in time for the district’s Feb. 10 meeting. “A lot of their prices seemed to stay consistent. There are some small markups, but nothing tremendous that we’ve seen thus far,” she said. Mullen Elementary Principal Bradly Halgash said there were not many changes, if any, to the physical education budget, although some will go toward the department since faculty members will need to be re-certified for lifeguarding, CPR and AED. Costs of training dummies and other equipment needed for re-certification went up, so the budget increased to account for this.

By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

Tonawanda varsity wrestling coach Dave Nedell said it best for all educators when he talked about the slogan he saw on a t-shirt: “Teachers in it for the outcome, not the income.” Teaching can sometimes be a thankless job, but on at least one day out of the year, Tonawanda Warriors wrestlers make sure those adults who help shape their lives get their proper due. On Jan. 21, prior to their match against Eden, the Warriors held their third annual Faculty Appreciation Night. Originally initiated two years ago by previous head coach Jeff Hess, the night is a special moment on which each THS wrestler can select a member of

By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

It was a moment that Adam Moore would probably just as soon forget. But it was also the kind of moment that defines the kind of character this young man has. Moore, who is currently in his second season with the Tonawanda Warriors bowling team, was on stage at the Tonawanda soccer

the district staff and thank them personally for the impact the teacher made on their young lives. A two-time Academic AllAmerican while at NCCC, Nedell said this night is part of how the coaching staff always stresses the importance of grades to their athletes. “It’s ‘student-athlete,’ not ‘athlete-student,’ so the student part is first,” Nedell said. “When they get a chance to honor and recognize that teacher that may have seemed miniscule and insignificant to a lot of people, but that public recognition goes a long way. Because you re-affirm totheteachersyoudidsomething that meant a lot and the teachers then feel rewarded.” Each student-athlete from the wrestling team selected a staff member then sent them a handwritten note telling them why theywerepicked.Thepre-match ceremony had each educator lined up on the sideline and, one by one, they were introduced along with the wrestler who

picked them. “It just pumps us all up when we see our favorite teacher that we connected with during class or helped us after school,” said senior Austin Ritenburg. “And they give us the opportunity to come here and practice and keep our grades up so we

banquet last November. His JV coach, Glen Gast, had just given Moore the team’s Best Teammate award and began praising Moore’s positive qualities when the unthinkable happened: Gast realized he’d made a mistake. He’d meant to give Best Teammate to the team’s other “Adam,” Adam Haentges. Moore, flushed with embarrassment, couldn’t help but laugh at the circumstances as Gast apologized before the packed house. Moore walked over to Haentges and handed him the trophy. “Adam Haentges is one of my very good friends,” said Moore. “I know he deserved it

as well so I just waited for him to come up, shook his hand and gave him the trophy.” Even though he was understandably disappointed, Moore downplayed the situation. Moore gets it. Even though it’s only natural to want a moment in the sun, Moore knows it’s much more important to be a good teammate; a guy who can be counted on and a guy who really cares and puts the team first. “It’s definitely about the team first,” he said. “I’m not trying to stand out and be the best, but just help other people on the team and make them better.”

can actually have fun with this sport. Then when they come to watch us it’s just an adrenaline rush. It makes us want to win even more.” A co-captain, Ritenburg selected history teacher Hank Hughes, who also serves as the boys varsity basketball coach

at Tonawanda High School. In Hughes’ classroom for three out of his four years in high school, Ritenburg said from the no-nonsense way Hughes runs his classes to the smile he puts on his students’ faces, it just felt good to be able to give a tangible thank you. “It really just felt great,” Ritenburg said, “because I didn’t know any other way. Because he’s, I wouldn’t say stern, but he was always really serious so I never really could go up and say, ‘Thanks! You’re an awesome teacher.’ As soon as he got that (note), it just put a huge smile on his face and made me really happy that I actually touched his heartanditmademereallyhappy when I went out and won and he was there to see that.” Hughes couldn’t help but smile when asked how flattering it was to have been selected. “I think that’s very nice,” Hughes said. “He wrote me a nice letter and that means a lot. That’s what being a coach, teacher, educator, whatever title

you want to give it, worth it. It was really nice. I was happy he won. He battled back. I told him today before class I was proud of him.” Saying that he wanted to make Hughes proud on this night especially, Ritenburg went out and won a key swing match that helped the Warriors gain the 50-27 win over Eden. Other wrestler/teacher selections were as follows: Zach Braddell/Mr. Runfola, Josh Bukowski/Mr. Hardleben, Nick Burda/Mrs.Normandin,Wisdon DelValle/Ms. Warthling, Jon Dowdall/Mr.Benson,CoryGau/ Mr.Zastrow,BrandonGeercken/ Mrs.Ruppert,JacobLogan/Mrs. Shaffer, Bryan Lukacz/Mrs. Zarcone, Cody McGregor/Mr. Schraufstetter, Mat Muhlbauer/ Mr. Colgorve, Gabe Ponce/Mr. Lodovico, Sam Sparacino/Mrs. Dzielski, Chris Tartick/Mr. Zarcone, Rick Tartick/Mr. Sesnie, and Destin Tirado/Mrs. Schultz. Faculty members received a special faculty appreciation night shirt.

The class and grace in which Moore handled that awkward situation speaks to how much character Moore has and is a credit to his upbringing. “It all comes down to family,” said Tonawanda boys bowling coach Daryle Macro. “Between his mom (Rebecca Moore) and his grandma (Sadie Kay Lymburner), they keep him on the straight and narrow. Their values and their discipline and their guidanceit comes from home. That’s what I see.” Lymburner, an avid bowler herself, has also had a huge impact on crafting Moore’s bowling style. But more than

anything, Lymburner and Rebecca Moore have been Adam’s moral compass that has shaped him into being the person he has become. “Basically my mom and my grandma have raised me,” Moore said. “They’ve shaped me. They’ve taught me to be respectful, courteous and classy and be a gentleman. They’re definitely the reason why I’m me.” A solid bowler, Moore is flirting with a 190 average and has been a big reason why the Warriors are still unbeaten as of press time. Beyond the bowling, he brings a sense of humor that makes coming to the ally enjoyable. From a joke

to a goofy dance, guys could count on Moore for a laugh when it was needed most. “I think making it fun it a big part of everything,” Moore said. Moore’s humor and personality were on display at Clinton H. Small Stadium this past soccer season when he worked the music and PA during girls varsity soccer games. During his time behind the microphone, he’d do his signature “Graaaaace Stran-ahaaaaan” call when Stranahan would pot a goal. “I enjoyed it. Even though I butchered a lot of names,” Moore said. “It was a lot of laughs.”

Local sports Fleming quietly grows into big role for Thunder By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

Julie Fleming doesn’t really think of herself as a multi-sport standout. She is just a girl who enjoys playing whatever is in season. Fleming doesn’t realize her abilities. “Whatever sport I’m doing I would say I like the most,” Fleming said. “But I would say I like volleyball the most. I would want to do that (in college). I want to play volleyball for D’Youville.” Fleming, a Mount St. Mary Academy senior, is a varsity letter winner in volleyball, basketball and softball. While volleyball seems to be her first love, Fleming is currently enjoying her best season on

the hardwood as a member of the school’s basketball team. “We had a hard schedule at first but now I think we’re going to do better,” Fleming said. “We’re getting better.” Flourishing in the readand-react style of offense that new coach Mike McCarthy has instilled, Fleming has recently had double-digit outings against Tapestry Charter (19 points), Bishop Kearney (12) and Christian Central Academy (16). “First and foremost I think it’s a matter of her being very coachable,” McCarthy said. “She wants to learn. She’s eager to learn. I think my personality mixed with her quietness really settles the two of us down. She makes me a little more calm and I get her motor running a little bit and it helps the two of us.” Fleming, as one of the team’s veteran leaders, through her hard work and a team-first attitude has helped with the process of McCarthy transi-

tioning from coaching JV to varsity. Other girls, especially the younger ones, see Fleming’s “Yes, coach” approach to the game and realize that is the way they should act, too. Fleming’s naturally softspoken personality also brings a quiet, calming effect to the floor. “Julie’s just a laid-back kid,” McCarthy said. “Nothing really fazes her. She never gets too high, never too low. I really wish I could have had her as a freshman because she has unbelievable abilities.” A good student and model of what a three-sport studentathlete should be like, Fleming is just doing her best to have as full and well-rounded of a time in high school as possible. “In middle school I used to play all the sports that I could,” she said. “Like swimming and soccer for a year. So I’ve always liked playing sports. I like sports because you just get a lot of good experiences and your friends from it.”

Caruso prepares for redemption shot at states By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

Dominic Caruso has a photo in his bedroom that he looks at every day. It’s of him and John Tyomey, the person who defeated Caruso in the finals of last year’s Catholic state championships. It’s what drives

Caruso to work harder and to make the most of his final season of high school wrestling at St. Joe’s. “I have a picture of us right as we were shaking hands in the finals,” Caruso said. “Every day I just look at it and think ‘I want to get back there, but I want to be the one who wins it this year.’ It really makes me want to win.” Losing the 113-pound NYCHSAA title to Tyomey, 15-0, jarred Caruso from within. He knew that if he wanted to make good on his dreams of a state title he would have to work harder

than ever before. And that work would have to begin immediately. “Last year taking second at Catholic states just started the fire,” Caruso said. “It started the training. It started the lifting. Really just having a taste of what the finals is like and not being first on the podium really was driving me up the wall. I put in wrestling work, lifted every day. Did the best I could to be first on the podium.” Caruso, who is in his fourth year of varsity, said that when he thinks he’s had all he can take or worked as hard as

he can, he thinks about that photo and that loss, and then grinds out more work. “The big thing with the seniors is you don’t have to motivate them at all,” St. Joe’s coach Pete Kennedy said. “He knows what he needs to do. So from that perspective it’s pretty easy. We’re just trying to help him get better every week.” At the 30-win mark this season as of press time, Caruso said that one of his top goals coming into this year was to break the Marauders’ all-time single-season record

of 45 “Ws.” Well on his way, whatever happens the rest of the winter, Caruso already etched his name in St. Joe’s wrestling history when he became the sixth Marauder to make the 100-win club. He joined current teammates Derek Penman, who reached 100 career victories a couple weeks ago, and Richie Jones, who is second on the all-time wins list. “I go to Richie constantly,” Caruso said. “I’m always asking him ‘What do I do here? What should I do? What’s the best counter?’ He always has

an answer for me. I’m blessed to have him on the team.” Facing the top guys in his class this season like Don McCoy, Vincent Valvo and an upcoming match against the top-ranked 120-pounder in Western New York, Hector Colom of St. Francis, are all getting Caruso ready for states. “Wrestling has taught me to never stop,” he said. “No matter how good (your opponent), the best have fallen. So you’ve got to just keep trying every day. Just get better and do everything you possibly can to be the best.”

Sampson Needs Some Shade

Wild giraffes who roam the African Savannah thrive there because of the warm temperatures, water, food, sun, and shade. The Buffalo Zoo is committed to providing the same type of environment for their giraffe population, whose newest member, Sampson, will be experiencing all kinds of FOLPDWH FKDQJH LQ KLV ÀUVW year of life. As part of continued improvements to the zoo, there are plans to build a shade structure. Giraffes already have use of an enclosed structure, as well as a large giraffe yard of approximately one-half acre. However, during the zoo’s accreditation process in 2011, it was noted that there was little to no outdoor shade. The Association of Zoo’s and Aquariums (AZA) requested that a shade structure be built to help keep the animals cool and out of the direct sunlight of the summer months. In order to achieve reaccreditation, the Buffalo Zoo needs to install this structure before 2016.
