St. Andrew’s ranked top in competition

Students of St. Andrew’s Country Day School showed up to win in the X-STREAM competition recently at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute. The X-STREAM Competition was an event developed from the STREAM initiative carried out by the Diocese of Buffalo. The various Catholic schools from the Diocese of Buffalo had student representation for the different competitions that took place throughout the day. Taking first place in the Robotics competition with the highest total points was the St. Andrew’s team compiled of seventh and eighth

graders: Aidan Bowerman, Michael Conway, Anthony Foglia, Philip Frieary, Mariel Gatmaitan, Andrew Jeremko, Irene Killian, Alexis Lakatos, Michael Rosina and Connor Wright. Competing in the Science Olympiad portion of the event were sixth graders, Lauren Wegman and Sarah Pratt. The team took first place in building the longest suspension bridge measuring 102cm while supporting a chalkboard eraser for more than 10 seconds. Otto Johannsen, fifth grader, and Daniel Foglia, sixth grader, as a team took first place in the “Straw Egg

Using only given materials, students were required to create a protective barrier to prevent an egg from breaking and dropping the structure to land closest to the specified target. In the “Mystery Architecture” competition, Dagny Rebhan and Emily Wright, sixth graders at St. Andrew’s placed second by constructing a freestanding structure out of given materials and judged based on height and ability to support a tennis ball. The last competition was a bottle rocket competition based on the amount of time the rocket stayed in the air.

Aidan Wright, 6th grader, designed a bottle rocket that successfully launched and missed standing in the top three finisher spots only by a couple of seconds. Other students of St. Andrew’s primary and intermediate grades were present to talk about their displayed inventions and gained knowledge from the STREAM Academies. With approximately 17 schools competing and over 500 spectators the day was full of education and excitement. The hallways were filled with smiles of pride on students’ faces and eagerness to continue learning.

As 2014 comes to a close and communities prepare to welcome in the New Year and new budgets, Town of Tonawanda Supervisor Anthony Caruana spoke at last week’s regular Town Board meeting regarding his hopes for the new year and progress the town has made toward its official motto of being a “great place to live, work and play.” On Dec. 22, Caruana cited increasing economic development in the Town of Tonawanda as one of his main goals for the coming year, and he said the progress of the North Youngmann Commerce Center is one indicator of this development. Currently, there are two tenants, Unifrax and First Source, slated to occupy two parcels of land in the commerce park. Unifrax manufactures high-temperature insulation products for industrial use, while First Source, formerly Wythe Will Tzetzo, LLC, is a candy distributor. “We’re really moving along with economic devel-

opment in the North Youngmann Commerce Center. We have those two big projects going on there with Unifrax and First Source coming in, so we’re very excited about that,” Caruana said. Caruana said business development will also be including another new business moving in on River Road as well. In November, the Town Board approved its tentative budget for the 2015 fiscal year, with a slight tax hike after town residents enjoyed a decrease in their tax bills for the previous two years. The cost per day in 2015, for the average homeowner, will be $3.27, which is an increase in two cents per day from last year. However, since the town tax levy is below the New York State property tax cap, residents will be eligible to receive a state property tax rebate in the amount of the tax increase. In 2015, Caruana said the town will also work on the fourth and final phase of the Parker-Fries interceptor project, which will involve the replacement of 11,725 linear feet of sanitary sewer, as well as installation of a new emergency generator. This phase will require dig-

Students raise $1,306 for breast cancer research Faculty, staff and students at Lindbergh Elementary School went pink to help raise money for breast cancer research. Students and staff donated money to the Susan G. Komen foundation in exchange for pink feathers, hair extensions or tinsel to put in their hair. Volunteers from a local salon came to the school to put in the tinsel and extensions. Students

were also allowed to donate money to wear a hat to show their support. This year, Lindbergh Elementary raised $1,306 for the foundation. Front row, Clare Ring, left, and Oliver Varney. ging up portions of Chelsea, Chalmers, Grandview, Lyndale, Montrose and University Avenues. The project, which town officials have said will add needed statemandated upgrades to the sewer system, is set to be finished by October 2016. This year, the town will also begin the Rails to Trails project, and as of Dec. 22, the project was out to bid. This project, which has long been in the works, will replace old, abandoned railroad tracks in the Town and City of Tonawanda and turn them into hiking trails. Construction on the project is scheduled to begin this spring, with a goal of linking the communities together. “We hope to have that construction started in the spring, and hopefully before the end of the fall, we should have that running,” Caruana said. “We’ve got tons of stuff going on in a lot of departments.” According to Town Clerk Marguerite Greco, plans are also in the works to allow residents to pay their water bills online sometime in the next year, although no projected completion date for this has been announced at the moment. When asked what the town accomplished in 2014, Caruana recalled how it began

with a harsh, cold winter, but “ended up very well for us.” He said although the town was concerned about road salt prices that spiked nearly 40 percent, the mild winter at the end of 2014 meant the town has not had to use much of it yet. Salt cost $33.28 per ton in 2013, and $49.45 in 2014. Caruana also recalled how, during the November storm that incapacitated much of Western New York, the KenTon area remained relatively unscathed, with only a small amount of snow. This freed up town officials to assist some of the harder-hit municipalities, which Caruana said showed the town’s willingness to help out others in their time of need. “We ended up sending, I forgot how many pieces of equipment, but we sent motors, trailers and plows. Over 50 of our personnel were out there for part of the time, some there for quite an extended period,” Caruana said. “I want to thank our volunteer firefighters who also went and helped out there, and our police department, who helped with the closing down of the 290 and the 90 to keep people from going on and heading into Buffalo and beyond. We were very proud of the work that they did.”

Ken-East collects items for Food Bank of WNY Kenmore East High School has collected 105,228 for the Food Bank of Western New York over the past 10 years through its tremendously successful food drive, Gobblin’ Up Hunger, which culminates with a member of the staff donning a turkey costume for a day. This year, the school is adding 6,866 food items to that total with more than 1,000 coming from a single class. The food drive is sponsored each year by the school’s Student Congress. All those donating get to drop their items into barrels designated for individual members of the staff. The staff member with the most items at the end of the drive is named “Biggest Turkey” and spends a day wearing a turkey costume. This year, that distinction went to science teacher Joe Allen with 2,646 items donated to his barrel. Allen wasn’t the only one who wore a costume, though. Nan Gallivan, a teacher aide in Michael Roy’s classroom, wore the costume for a day after Roy’s class collected a total of 1,029 items, nearly one in six of all the items collected school-wide. Michael Billoni of the Food Bank of Western New York visited Roy’s class to personally thank the students for their efforts. “I want to thank all the students in this building, especially you students for collecting over 1,000 items,” Billoni said. “When you get home and are sitting at the dinner table, you can look at your parents and siblings and say that you helped feed a hungry family

All items go to local families in need, many of whom are residents of the in Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda school district. “Nobody should ever be hungry in this country. We have so much food,” said Jeff Diegelman, English teacher and co-organizer of the food drive. “We try to identify families in need at Kenmore East. You never know. It could be the student sitting next to you who is in need.” Students are the reason the food drive is so successful

year after year, according to Jeff Liss, English teacher and the other food drive coorganizer. “Students are the main participants,” he said. “The food is brought in by the students. Students take the cash donations and buy the food. And students sort and organize the food items.” Teachers also step in to help the food drive by donating money and food and encouraging student participation and the competition for a teacher or staff member to wear the costume is a driving force behind the drive’s success. “The kids in this class were really motivated,” said senior Stephanie Finn, a student in Roy’s class. “We wanted Mrs. Gallivan to wear the costume. She got

third place, but that’s okay. We’re glad we did it.” All Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda schools have been helping the community in many different ways this holiday season. At Edison Elementary School, students and staff collected a total of 526 items during the school’s sock and underwear drive for the Ken-Ton Closet, as well as many winter clothing items for the school’s Mitten Tree, all of which will go to local families in need. The school is also hosting its third annual food drive through Dec. 23 with classes competing for the grand prize: a movie in the auditorium. Points are awarded per item with some items earning more points.

Running to remember a fallen hero By Kaitlin Urban

LCpl Timothy Serwinowski.

Marine LCpl Christopher Shank proudly completed the Marine Corps Marathon for the first time, while his wife, Kristie cheered him on. “The overall atmosphere was pretty amazing,” said Kristie. “At the end, there were Marines cheering everyone on.” This is what motivated the couple to participate in next year’s marathon together. “Being at the marathon has motivated me to get into running because I had never ran before that,” said Kristie. “It was super motivating.” In addition to the atmosphere, Chris and Kristie both noticed there were many runners wearing shirts representing a fallen hero. This was when they decided to run next year in honor of their fallen North Tonawanda High School former classmate, LCpl Timothy Serwinowski. “There are close to 30,000

Local sports Ken West upends Sweet Home in Ken-Ton Classic By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

It was a tale of two basketball teams that have more in common than they probably even realize. Mark Taylor went 2 of 2 from the line with 32.3 seconds left in the game to help Kenmore West secure a 56-55 win over Sweet Home in the opening game of the Ken-Ton Holiday Classic that was held at Kenmore East Dec. 26-27. The win vaulted the Blue Devils into the title game against Cardinal O’Hara, but more importantly, it proved to be huge confidence booster for a talented team that has not found its rhythm as a group. “We needed this. We needed this one,” said Ken West coach Mike Meetze. “I said to them, ‘I think two weeks ago we lose this game.’ Down the stretch, we didn’t play with a lot of composure. We

played young, we had two first-year point guards on varsity. We threw the ball away a couple times, but we hit big free throws. We did enough with the ball down the stretch in the last minute and got some pretty good communication in the last play to get a 15foot runner off the glass.” Jordan Heine, who led all scorers with 18 points, set the stage for the Panthers last-gasp attempt at the hoop when he sank a bucket with 20 seconds left. Sweet Home got one final look at the basketball, as Meetze alluded to, but the Blue Devils’ defense was able to bat away the attempted buzzer beater to hang on for their second win of the year. Almost mirror images of each other, the Panthers and Blue Devils both have very athletic, skilled players. But both teams entered the Ken-Ton Classic still searching for a way to bring all of the pieces of the puzzle together. Tied 10-10 after the first quarter, the Blue Devils began to turn the tide in their favor when Trent White (13 points) hit a two-pointer and Jon Lo-

renzo went a perfect 4 of 4 from the line. Ken West took a 28-22 lead into halftime. The combination of Heine, Jordan Evert (16) and Brandon Smiley kept Sweet Home in the game and pulled it within one point, 54-53, just prior to Mark Taylor’s winning free throws. “They were huge. Huge,” Meetze said of Taylor’s frees. “He struggled early on in the game, he had six turnovers in the first three quarters, for him to come back and play with that composure down the stretch is a credit to him.” For Panthers coach Scott Martin, it was back to the drawing board to see what they could do to get better results in the weeks and months ahead. “Right now we’re clearly a work in progress,” said Martin. “We have a lot of very good athletes, kind of similar to Ken West. We just don’t have that one (pure) basketball kid to kind of get us over the top.” The Blue Devils would fall to O’Hara, 55-52, in the title game while Sweet Home beat Kenmore East in the third place game.

Local sports Haeick’s accountability an asset for Ken East hoops By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER

Justin Haeick sat on the bleachers inside the gym at Kenmore East. The Bulldogs had just been handed a 72-58 loss by Cardinal O’Hara in the first round of the Ken-Ton Holiday Classic on Dec. 26. While the loss was obviously upsetting, for Haeick, what was far more bothersome was the fact that in his heart, he knew he didn’t have his best game. Through a quiet, measured tone, Haeick admitted that he let the team down by not being at his best. That accountability, even more than the numbers he usually puts up, is a prime example of Haeick’s value to the Bulldogs this season. Though the ‘Dogs have stumbled out of the gates with a 1-5 start, Haeick has been one of the team’s most consistent producers as he has hit double digits in four of the ‘Dogs six games and notched doubledoubles twice. “He holds his ground. He’s strong,” said Bulldogs coach Jay Robbins. “He’s been one of our most consistent guys.” Haeick has indeed been the model of consistency for Ken East this season. He had 10 points and 10 rebounds in an opening-night win over Orchard Park, 11 points and eight boards against Niagara Falls and a huge game of 26 points and 10 rebounds against Lewiston-Porter. “I love coming off a game with a double-double,” Haeick said. “It makes me more motivated for the next game.”

DAN HICKLING

Justin Haeick has recorded two double-doubles and has hit double digs in scoring in four of the Bulldogs’ six games this season. Though his numbers have been good, the best thing Haeick has brought to the floor in his third season of varsity is accountability and hard work. He doesn’t make excuses after a bad game. He shoulders the blame for what he did wrong and does his best to learn from it and move forward. “I’ve got to show up to prac-

tice and work hard every single day,” said Haeick. “That’s the only way I’m gonna get better, keep being consistent. I don’t want one of these games. Six points isn’t good enough for me. If I produced (against O’Hara), we probably would have had the win.” Haeick, angry with his turnovers and fact he only

had six points against O’Hara, rebounded with 11 points and a better all-around game the next night against Sweet Home. “He’s a hard worker. He’s a good kid and he’s gonna try hard and he’s give you everything he’s got,”said Robbins. “That’s really all you ever ask for when you’re a coach.” Beyond the hard work,

Haeick is a great example of the phrase ‘don’t judge a book by its cover.’ Haeick is the first to admit that he isn’t the fastest guy on the court and that he won’t be the star of a highlight-reel slam dunk. He knows what his strengths are and makes the most of them. His raw, natural strength and willingness to get his nose

dirty have been the catalyst for Haeick scoring so many points inside off of rebounds. “A lay-up is worth the same amount as a dunk,” Haeick said. “You get those points. They’re worth the same.” Most of all, Haeick just wants to work hard everyday and set a good example for everyone.

Spotting Sampson Just Got Easier… Read on for Second Week Clues

Impact of minimum wage Wage • from page 4 The federal minimum wage sits at $7.25 since 2009. Twenty-three states (including New York) have set their minimum wage rates higher than the Federal rate. Only three states (Arizona, Georgia, and Wyoming) are set lower, but by law they must pay the federal rate since it is higher. The rest of the states either don’t set a rate or set theirs to align with the federal rate since they must pay at least that anyway.

There was a bill that proposed increasing the federal minimum wage gradually over 30 months from $7.25 to $10.10, but it was defeated in the Senate in late April 2014 and hasn’t gone anywhere since. Advocates of increasing the minimum wage claim that since low income earners tend to save less and purchase more, it would be a boom to the economy overall. In addition, it could lift low-income households out of the pov-

erty level, and in some cases off of public assistance. Opponents claim the burden on employers would be too great and actually force them to hire fewer employees, or even cut hours or layoff existing employees. While the federal minimum wage debate continues, the minimum wage in New York State will increase again Dec. 31, 2015 to $9 per hour.
