in Orchard Park? The Mentholatum Company, which operates its North American headquarters on Sterling Drive off Milestrip Road, is today one of the top manufacturers of skin care products in the world. The company, along with its parent company, Japan-based Rohto Pharmaceutical Co., also manufacture Oxy acne medication, WellPatch, Natural Ice lip balm and Hada Labo Tokyo skin care products, among others. But Jean Legros, Mentholatum’s senior director of marketing, notes that while the company has a strong presence in national retailers

and consumers’ minds, they are still dwarfed by some of their competitors, particularly Proctor & Gamble Co., which manufactures the other iconic vapor rub, Vick’s. “Mentholatum competes with giants. It’s like David and Goliath,” said Legros, adding that Mentholatum also competes against the Fortune 500 corporation Johnson & Johnson. However, the company has staked out a position in both the American and international markets through what Legros calls unique, top-quality skin care products. He says the company is in a strong position for

growth; their goal is to double their revenue in the next five years. With this goal in mind, Mentholatum launched two new, innovative products in the last year. The first, the Softlips Cube, promises effective, soothing lip care, and comes in a sleek, trendy design, aimed particularly for the female market. The other is a Nighttime variant of its original vapor rub, with “naturally soothing lavender” to provide gentler cough relief.

Mentholatum does much of its sampling locally, and donates to a number of local charities, including the Roycroft Campus Corporation, the Buffalo Zoo, the Food Bank of WNY and the Conners Children Center. The company also employs close to 200 residents, and they expect to create more jobs as they grow. Legros says they appreciate the local support, and very much like their home in the Buffalo region. “Buffalonians are very loyal to products that are made locally, and tend to make an effort to support local products,” Legros said. “As much as we support our local charities, we appreciate the support of Buffalonians.”

There they manufacture and package a number of their popular products. The location also serves as their North American headquarters. And yet, despite manufacturing so many leading and trusted skin care products, Legros still feels as though Mentholatum’s presence goes unknown by most Buffalonians. “Some people know about Mentholatum, but our presence and the knowledge of our presence has been a little bit subdued,” Legros said. The Mentholatum Company was founded in 1889 by Albert Alexander Hyde, an early purveyor of the medicinal and topical benefits of menthol. Developing the vapor rub recipe which the company still uses today, he founded a partnership called The Yucca Company in Wichita, Kan. By 1906, the company changed its name to The Mentholatum Company, following the success of the original Mentholatum Ointment, and had opened an office in Buffalo. Several years later, in 1919, the company opened a factory on Niagara Street in Buffalo. The company found early success by marketing heavily in East Asia; they began selling to Japan in 1913 and today manufacture several of the leading skin care products the region. In 1975, Rohto Pharmaceutical Company became Mentholatum’s licensee,

On Dec. 31, long-time Tonawanda City Court Judge Joseph J. Cassata will retire due to a state law that requires judges to retire by the end of the year they turn 70 years of age. This week, Mayor Rick Davis and Common Council members shared their memories of Cassata. Cassata has been a city judge since 1996, when he ran for and was appointed to his current position. Before this, he was city attorney for the City of Tonawanda, after having received his bachelor’s degree in political science from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1967 and his juris doctor from the University of Cincinnati in 1970. He was admitted to the bar in 1972. Davis said Monday that during Cassata’s tenure, he made a lasting impact on the city’s day-to-day operations by establishing a drug court, which remains an important facet of the city court today. According to public records, Cassata had also served as the president of the New York Association of Drug Treatment Court Professionals. “I know that through his efforts in drug court, many families’ lives have been changed forever,” Davis said on Monday of Cassata’s work. “Some

of his best qualities are that he always respected the position of judge, and no matter how big or small the case, you knew Judge Cassata was going to do it by the book.” This November, a citywide election will be held to choose a successor for Cassata, with any candidates who may wish to be considered for the position required to receive a mandated amount of signatures for their name to be put on the ballot, Davis explained. As of Tuesday, Cassata was not immediately available for comment, and Davis could not confirm who may succeed him. On Monday, First Ward Councilman Charles Gilbert referred to Cassata as a “driving force for justice in the City of Tonawanda,” and said during his current and past term as councilman, Cassata would make personalized comments to each city official who was beginning his or her term, as Cassata was responsible for swearing in many officials during his nearly 20-year tenure. “His love for the city was always evident,” Gilbert said. “One of my favorite statements he made to me was, ‘Always remember that with every issue you come to on the council, just remember there will always be another issue, so be good to each other.’” “I have known Judge Cassata my entire life, and I am proud to call him a friend,”

added Fourth Ward Councilwoman Jenna Koch. “He has brought the highest honesty, integrity and leadership to the courtroom. He will be sorely missed.” During his career, Cassata “served [his] community with passion and compassion,” according to Davis, who noted how Cassata’s extensive amount of experience behind the bench means his successor will have big shoes to fill. “Anytime someone leaves with that much experience, it leaves a huge hole,” Davis said. “In his years as judge, he didn’t waste a dime in making the City of Tonawanda Court a full-service court.” Among his other accomplishments, Cassata served as president of the New York State City Court Judges Association from 2004 to 2006, secretary of the Judicial Council and chair of the judicial section of the New York State Bar Association. In addition to the other members of the council, Second Ward Councilwoman Jackie Smilinich has remained a personal and professional acquaintance of the departing city judge, and voiced her respect for him. “It will be impossible to replace his honesty and fairness on the bench, as well as his unbiased dedication and belief in the residents of this community,” she said.

Sampson Needs Some Shade

Wild giraffes who roam the African Savannah thrive there because of the warm temperatures, water, food, sun, and shade. The Buffalo Zoo is committed to providing the same type of environment for their giraffe population, whose newest member, Sampson, will be experiencing all kinds of FOLPDWH FKDQJH LQ KLV ÀUVW year of life. As part of continued improvements to the zoo, there are plans to build a shade structure. Giraffes already have use of an enclosed structure, as well as a large giraffe yard of approximately one-half acre. However, during the zoo’s accreditation process in 2011, it was noted that there was little to no outdoor shade. The Association of Zoo’s and Aquariums (AZA) requested that a shade structure be built to help keep the animals cool and out of the direct sunlight of the summer months. In order to achieve reaccreditation, the Buffalo Zoo needs to install this structure before 2016. Local sports By Dave Ricci The slogan says it all — Our House. When Kenmore East arrives at the Kenmore West Athletic Complex on Feb. 3 for Round Two of varsity basketball action, the Bulldogs can be sure of one thing. Their crosstown rival will be ready to defend their home court. The Battle of Ken-Ton will have yet another chapter written when the Blue Devils and Bulldogs lock horns in a girls/ boys basketball doubleheader, starting at 5:30 p.m. The Blue Devils will be looking to for the season sweep, while the Lady Blue Devils are looking to avenge a 53-52 loss to Ken East on Jan. 6. “I think now we really want it since we lost to them,” said

By Dave Ricci Jacob Elgie remembers that day profoundly. Elgie, then a sophomore, was in the weight room at Kenmore East when he was approached by Bulldogs wrestling coach Joe Korniczky, who asked how come he wasn’t trying out for wrestling. The question caught Elgie off-guard a

KenWest senior captain Destiny Catania. “We didn’t try as hard as we could, so we’re going to (play) to our full potential.” The Lady Blue Devils, looking to avenge their only Niagara Frontier League loss of the season, will lean on Catania, the 1-2 punch in the paint of Katie Proy and Sam Britton and sophomore guard Grace Ferguson. The Bulldogs, who got gamewinning heroics last time from Serena Sordetto, whose free throws won the first contest, will also look to Kendall Mills, Kiaja O’Neil and Sarah McCarthy. Giving full credit to Ken East for playing a strong, wellrounded game, Ken West coach Jeff Martin said his team needs to bring a more complete effort. “We need to play a full 32 minutes of Kenmore West Lady Blue Devils basketball,” he said. “That’s all I can ask from them. Just give it everything they have

for 32 minutes.” In boys action, the Blue Devils, who beat Ken East, 51-34, in the first meeting, are trying to build off the momentum of a stunning 77-72 win over Niagara Falls that knocked the

bit, as he never even gave wrestling a second thought. “I hadn’t considered it,” Elgie said. “‘K’” came into the weight room and asked ‘Why aren’t you wrestling?’ I didn’t really have an answer. He said ‘Try it for two weeks.’ I tried it for two weeks and I was like ‘All right. I’m not really feeling it.’ But I never quit.” Korniczky, who always tells newcomers “give me just two weeks to try it out,” said he has been very impressed by the effort Elgie has given. “I was scrambling for wrestlers. I walked into

the weight room and I saw four kids,” Korniczky said. “Four of them said yes, two of them showed up. Jake was one of them. He didn’t know anything about wrestling. He said ‘I’m not sure.’ I said ‘Give me two weeks.’ That’s all I ever ask the guys. He just took to it. He loves it. He’s got the bug in him.” The fact that Elgie stuck with it speaks volumes about his character. It’s one thing to try a new sport or activity, and fall in love with it because things instantly click. But that wasn’t the case for Elgie.

Wolverines from the ranks of the unbeaten. “It was a lot of close losses. Three points, one point,” said guard Terrell Ford, whose 27 points helped West climb out of an early 9-2 hole versus the

Falls. “We needed that ‘W’ to build our confidence.” Ken West had lost a couple of heartbreakers — a buzzer beater to North Tonawanda (Jan. 13) and in overtime to Lewiston-Porter (Jan. 20) — but even in defeat, the Blue Devils have started putting the pieces together. The Blue Devils came into the new year with a wealth of talent. It was just a matter of figuring out what pieces work best together and finding a starting five. Ford and fellow returnee Trent White have been the foundation. Slowly but surely, Aaron Tucker, who transferred in from East, and freshman call-up Tal James have helped to round things out. That fifth spot is usually occupied by either Jay Taylor, Mark Taylor or Tyler Aquilina, depending on what quality they need most on the floor.

“We’re starting to make more right decisions than wrong decisions,” Ken West coach Mike Meetze said. “Or we know why we’ve made the wrong decisions. I think knowing the ‘why you did it wrong’ is more important than making the right decisions. That’s where we’re starting to see the difference. Finally.” Meetze said that after going 4-4 in the first eight league games, the key now, more than ever, is to focus on consistency and setting the right tone for sectionals. “Everything has got to be sectional mentality,” he said. “Thirty-two minutes. That’s what we said with the Falls game — ‘If this is your last sectional game, what are you going to leave?’ We left a very favorable impression, and I think our confidence, you could just feel it building up a little bit.”

Wrestling has tested him more than he’s ever been before in his life. It would have been easy for him to walk into the sunset after those two weeks and never look back. But, as he said, Elgie is not a quitter. “I just never actually quit a sport or anything up to that point,” Elgie said. “So I was like ‘If I quit at this, what else am I going to end up quitting.’ I just kind of stuck with it. Didn’t think I was going to. Then after the season I thought ‘Well, I’m probably not going to stay for next season, but I came right back this year.’” Korniczky said the fact

that Elgie, who competes at 160 pounds, didn’t give in and quit reveals that make-up of what it takes to be a wrestler and why Elgie has done so well. In just his second season with the Bulldogs, Elgie is sporting the team’s best record at 12-7 and has placed in multiple tournaments. “Jake seems to learn pretty quick. He can recognize when he needs help on something,” Korniczky said. “He doesn’t ask, but if I point it out to him, he tries to correct it. He just has a great attitude for improving. I understand what hard work is. He’s in

the gym six days a week. He has the traits you want in an athlete.” One of the biggest challenges for Elgie was learning that wrestling isn’t just about brute force. Unlike other sports in which teammates can bail each other out on a tough day, it’s solely up to the individual in wrestling. But Elgie has stood his ground and lived up to the challenge. “It’s definitely the hardest sport I’ve ever done,” Elgie said. “I’ve done soccer and football. You always have to rely on a team for that, but in wrestling, it’s just you.”

Local sports Fleming quietly grows into big role for Thunder By Dave Ricci Julie Fleming doesn’t really think of herself as a multi-sport standout. She is just a girl who enjoys playing whatever is in season. Fleming doesn’t realize her abilities. “Whatever sport I’m doing I would say I like the most,” Fleming said. “But I would say I like volleyball the most. I would want to do that (in college). I want to play volleyball for D’Youville.” Fleming, a Mount St. Mary Academy senior, is a varsity letter winner in volleyball, basketball and softball. While volleyball seems to be her first love, Fleming is currently enjoying her best season on

the hardwood as a member of the school’s basketball team. “We had a hard schedule at first but now I think we’re going to do better,” Fleming said. “We’re getting better.” Flourishing in the readand-react style of offense that new coach Mike McCarthy has instilled, Fleming has recently had double-digit outings against Tapestry Charter (19 points), Bishop Kearney (12) and Christian Central Academy (16). “First and foremost I think it’s a matter of her being very coachable,” McCarthy said. “She wants to learn. She’s eager to learn. I think my personality mixed with her quietness really settles the two of us down. She makes me a little more calm and I get her motor running a little bit and it helps the two of us.” Fleming, as one of the team’s veteran leaders, through her hard work and a team-first attitude has helped with the process of McCarthy transi-

tioning from coaching JV to varsity. Other girls, especially the younger ones, see Fleming’s “Yes, coach” approach to the game and realize that is the way they should act, too. Fleming’s naturally softspoken personality also brings a quiet, calming effect to the floor. “Julie’s just a laid-back kid,” McCarthy said. “Nothing really fazes her. She never gets too high, never too low. I really wish I could have had her as a freshman because she has unbelievable abilities.” A good student and model of what a three-sport studentathlete should be like, Fleming is just doing her best to have as full and well-rounded of a time in high school as possible. “In middle school I used to play all the sports that I could,” she said. “Like swimming and soccer for a year. So I’ve always liked playing sports. I like sports because you just get a lot of good experiences and your friends from it.”

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Caruso prepares for redemption shot at states By Dave Ricci

Dominic Caruso has a photo in his bedroom that he looks at every day. It’s of him and John Tyomey, the person who defeated Caruso in the finals of last year’s Catholic state championships. It’s what drives

Caruso to work harder and to make the most of his final season of high school wrestling at St. Joe’s. “I have a picture of us right as we were shaking hands in the finals,” Caruso said. “Every day I just look at it and think ‘I want to get back there, but I want to be the one who wins it this year.’ It really makes me want to win.” Losing the 113-pound NYCHSAA title to Tyomey, 15-0, jarred Caruso from within. He knew that if he wanted to make good on his dreams of a state title he would have to work harder

than ever before. And that work would have to begin immediately. “Last year taking second at Catholic states just started the fire,” Caruso said. “It started the training. It started the lifting. Really just having a taste of what the finals is like and not being first on the podium really was driving me up the wall. I put in wrestling work, lifted every day. Did the best I could to be first on the podium.” Caruso, who is in his fourth year of varsity, said that when he thinks he’s had all he can take or worked as hard as

he can, he thinks about that photo and that loss, and then grinds out more work. “The big thing with the seniors is you don’t have to motivate them at all,” St. Joe’s coach Pete Kennedy said. “He knows what he needs to do. So from that perspective it’s pretty easy. We’re just trying to help him get better every week.” At the 30-win mark this season as of press time, Caruso said that one of his top goals coming into this year was to break the Marauders’ all-time single-season record

of 45 “Ws.” Well on his way, whatever happens the rest of the winter, Caruso already etched his name in St. Joe’s wrestling history when he became the sixth Marauder to make the 100-win club. He joined current teammates Derek Penman, who reached 100 career victories a couple weeks ago, and Richie Jones, who is second on the all-time wins list. “I go to Richie constantly,” Caruso said. “I’m always asking him ‘What do I do here? What should I do? What’s the best counter?’ He always has

an answer for me. I’m blessed to have him on the team.” Facing the top guys in his class this season like Don McCoy, Vincent Valvo and an upcoming match against the top-ranked 120-pounder in Western New York, Hector Colom of St. Francis, are all getting Caruso ready for states. “Wrestling has taught me to never stop,” he said. “No matter how good (your opponent), the best have fallen. So you’ve got to just keep trying every day. Just get better and do everything you possibly can to be the best.”

During the Tonawanda City School District’s budget advisory team meeting on Tuesday, Director of Business and Finance Rubie Harris and the rest of the team reviewed planned state aid for a new New York State executive budget proposal, as well as the district’s BOCES budget, physical education budget, athletic budget and transportation budget as it plans allowances for 2015-16. The New York State executive budget proposal has not yet been released. Governor Andrew Cuomo has issued a proposed list of reforms, such as a mandate that 50 percent of teachers’ evaluation ratings would be based on how well students do on state tests, up from the current 20 percent. Any teacher rated as “ineffective” based on tests scores or the observations would be ineligible to receive a rating of “effective.” Teachers would also not get tenure until after five years, up from three years, of being rated effective. Additionally, the governor has proposed other reforms, including classroom observations by school officials and an observer independent of the school district. Harris said this put school districts on hold, since Albany will not release figures for amounts of state aid it will give the school districts until it is decided if it will proceed with these reforms. Budget advisory team members, including Superintendent Dr. James Newton, expressed displeasure as this makes it harder for districts to plan their budgets. “If the legislature cannot come to an agreement on these proposals, then the governor has proposed school aid for both 2015-16 and 2016-17 will be held to the amount of school aid districts received

in the 2014-15 school year,” Harris said. Currently, Harris is budgeting as if the district will receive the same amount of state aid it received this year, and she proposed conservative numbers. “I will proceed with the state aid from 201415,” she said. “It is my hope that this will be resolved and we will receive an increase in state aid, but considering nothing has been settled, it is best to proceed forward cautiously.” Harris said the district met with BOCES last Wednesday to go over its 2015-16 budget. Currently, BOCES does not have all its budget prices available, although Harris said she hopes to have this ready in time for the district’s Feb. 10 meeting. “A lot of their prices seemed to stay consistent. There are some small markups, but nothing tremendous that we’ve seen thus far,” she said. Mullen Elementary Principal Bradly Halgash said there were not many changes, if any, to the physical education budget, although some will go toward the department since faculty members will need to be re-certified for lifeguarding, CPR and AED. Costs of training dummies and other equipment needed for re-certification went up, so the budget increased to account for this. “We kind of caught up to that. Otherwise, the supply line for the PE instruction seems to be working well,” Halgash said. “The intermurals, even though we added one intermural in the sixth grade, we hope to continue with that in the following year and are also looking into the kindergarten through third grade level intermurals before school starts.” Athletic Director Charles Jufer presented the district’s proposed athletic budget for 2015-16. In some cases, the

budget had to go up because of costs of staffing the high school fitness center. Before this year, the district did not need supervision for the fitness center since it was not yet finished or open to the public. The center is staffed Monday through Friday, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The costs for coaches also went up due to a union contract, and contractual costs for equipment have gone up due to increased costs of trainers, support personnel, officials and reconditioning of helmets. Supply costs to cover purchases of uniforms will remain the same. The district will also budget for a 2 percent markup to cover transportation costs for student athletes. The budget team also discussed the potential costs of buying a new wrestling mat to replace one that is old and worn-out. The transportation budget, which Harris presented, would be increased based on what will be needed to pay for technology maintenance for the transportation system. Currently, the city is in a shared service agreement with North Tonawanda for transportation to save costs, and this will continue. Harris also increased the budget for bus fuel in case of increasing costs of gas. Additionally, the district is responsible for providing a reliable means of transportation for any of its students who do not have one. “If students become homeless while attending our school, we are still responsible for them,” Harris said. “If they move within 50 miles of the district, I have to provide transportation daily, to school and from school. Currently, we’ve been using Buffalo Transportation to get the students to and from school. We anticipate at least one student needing that service for next year.”
