Wasilewski’s unexpected return has Trojans primed for another run in 2014-15 By Aaron Garland SPORTS REPORTER
Two weeks prior to the opening of practice for the 2014-15 season, the West Seneca East boys Federation hockey team was gearing up to move on without its captain from a year ago. Defensman Brian Wasilewski, now a senior, made the Buffalo Jr. Sabres A squad (20U) in the spring, making him ineligible to play for East. But something strange happened at the preseason introductory parent-player meeting. Wasilewski walked through the East Middle School auditorium doors, ready to take in the information the coaches were set to present. “(Trojans coach Dan GoldJEFFREY T. And from that team, East loses its top four scorers in Michael Benaquist, a senior who is playing for the Jr. Sabres, and graduated seniors David Brunka, Travis Hicks and Chris Alberti. Prynn still likes the scoring ability on the roster, with the way the sophomore and junior forwards from last year have matured and progressed. “Whatever offense we may have lost, I think we’re going to be better defensively and in net,” Prynn said. “Plus, I don’t think our offense will take too much of a hit.”

The West Seneca West boys Federation hockey team was going to slip, at least a little, eventually. Strangely enough, it happened following one of its finest seasons ever. A year after winning a Section VI Federation Small Schools championship, the Indians, losing a host of key guys to that title-winning squad, finished with their worst record in seven years in 2013-14 (5-10-1-1). for West, which has made a habit of placing in the upper half of Federation Division 2 and making long postseason runs recently. But West, complete with five or six players from the 2012-13 championship team, according to coach Kevin Rozo, is poised to not carry last year into 2014-15. The group that felt the ultimate high of two seasons ago also experienced what is considered to be a low for West shortly after.

West Seneca girls set for joint effort with Hamburg in 2014-15 2014-15 Fed Schedule
By Aaron Garland SPORTS REPORTER
Life without the Western New York Girls Federation Hockey League’s all-time leading scorer just became easier to cope with. Erin Gehen, who graduated earlier this year with 108 goals and 69 assists across her four years with the West Seneca district girls hockey team, is now a freshman in Buffalo State’s program. West Seneca’s biggest problem the last two years hasn’t been assembling talent — with Gehen as Exhibit A — it’s been compiling enough of it for sufficient depth. Being limited to just two lines, sometimes less, and three or four defensemen on a nightly basis severely hindered its ability to win. West Seneca, which has gone a combined 7-25 the past two seasons, would stay competitive through two frames until it would get gassed as opponents broke away in third periods. But as a superstar moved on, a contingency plan followed. Help is on the way in 2014-15. Enter Hamburg, which is teaming with West Seneca this season to form a merged squad. It’s the first opportunity for Hamburg girls to play Federation hockey, which is set for a fifth season. And there was a good response, as there are seven Hamburg players among the roster of 24. West Seneca/Hamburg coach Brian Hillery said he’s excited to trot out three lines and at least five defensemen each game. Sure, the team graduated Gehen. But it counters the loss of Gehen and two other seniors, including the program’s second all-time leading scorer, Molly Sikorski, with an increasing amount of girls from both schools who are also playing travel hockey. Hillery said he thinks there is a capacity on how many

He wasn’t positive if that was a rule, though, because, well, that wasn’t a concern in the past. There are longevity advantages to the unification, too. “The girls from Hamburg are really going to help us a lot from a depth standpoint, and also being more competitive,” said Hillery, who was an assistant for three years before becoming the headman last season. “It’s great for both sides to join together. It ensures we’ll have high school hockey in West Seneca for years to come. It also gives the Hamburg girls something they have been trying so hard for the last few years.” While Hillery said Gehen is “irreplaceable,” he does have more candidates than ever to cut into the production she leaves behind. There is returning leading scorer Jordan Weisenburg, a West junior who will be in the middle of the top line. East sophomore Kaira Pat-

The biggest game-changer among the forwards is having the ability to grab a breather. Hillery is confident in constructing a third line that can provide a spell for the other lines while chipping in a few goals. It’s a style that simply hasn’t been possible the last couple years. “The whole lineup is just going to be balanced,” Hil-

G Abbie Mutton lery said. “There are no true superstars out there like Erin, but there are a lot of good hockey players, and if we form together we can see a lot of success. “The biggest thing is allowing the top-six forwards to rest a little bit more so that late in the third period they can go out there and be 100 percent.” There is to be a lot of shuffling to figure out the right combinations up top. The arrival of Hamburg created a surplus on the
blue line. It’s left Hillery to decide which defensemen are best suited to jump up to forward. Hamburg freshman Emma O’Neill, who plays defense on Hillery’s West Seneca Wings travel squad, is being experimented at forward because she has good offensive ability. In the crowded crop of defensemen is Catie Martinez, an eighth grader at West Middle. Hillery anticipates her to be one of the strongest blueliners. Hamburg junior Nicole Dubill is a tall, two-way defender who has impressed so far. West senior Brianna Carlin, a tough, stay-at-home player, according to Hillery, is slated to return to the back end, where she played last year. That’s the same case for East freshman Nicole Harris, who played every other shift in 2013-14 with only four defensemen on the roster. Bridget Bork, a junior at West, is also back after playing “D” a year ago. But she is

so trustworthy anywhere on the ice, Hillery said, that she may be moved to forward. WS/Hamburg is set in net with the continued progression of Abbie Mutton, a West junior in only her third year playing the sport, not just goalie. She’s now on Hillery’s Wings team and has the power to steal games — she nearly did in a 4-2 quarterfinal loss to eventual Federation champion Kenmore last February. That was a microcosm of the season — the team kept it close until it inevitably tired out. There should be less of that this winter. After all, the program’s moniker did expand. “I expect to win more hockey games due to the depth that we have,” Hillery said. “If we’re keeping games close in the third period and we’re able to roll three lines and five defensemen, we should be able to finish out at least a handful of games we couldn’t last year.” Twitter: @Garland_SUN
Tobias enters fourth varsity Trojans to season, will be leaned on for scoring emphasize physical, two-way game
“West” from page B1 And the ones who joined the program last year have some of the kinks worked out to give the Indians a balanced, tested group that doesn’t want to repeat as a five-win team. “They have seen both ends and we expect them to be our leaders and goto guys,” Rozo said of the multi-year veterans. “We have a bunch of guys who have been in our system now for at least a year, some two or three, and for one or two it’s even four. We’re hoping for a bounce-back year, no doubt about it.” Adam Tobias, a fourthyear player, is one who has seen the best of times, and not so best of times. He’ll be looked upon to provide a lot — “He’s our best all-around player,” Rozo said — as the topline center. But the senior will be needed most in the scoring department with the entire first line of Pat Ciancio, last season’s leading scorer, Brendan Ebert and Josh Hicks graduating. Junior Zak Klinko is the second-line center after netting four goals and handing out three assists in 2013-14.
Junior Anthony Amoia, who has “great hands around the net,” according to Rozo, is expected to up his production in his third year. He had 11 points (7+4) last year and is going to play wing on one of the first two lines. Senior winger Quinn Finnegan, another top-six guy, will contribute to whichever line Amoia isn’t on to spread out the scoring ability. Freshman winger Colin Deubell has impressed the first few weeks of practice, mainly working with the No. 1 line. Junior winger Jack Myers is a newcomer and a grinder type who should see plenty of minutes. Myers, also a football player, is a good athlete and big body — 5-foot-11 — who is capable of using physicality to win the puck. Rozo has four lines, and is comfortable rolling three of them consistently. “I think we have three good lines,” Rozo said. “In this league you’re usually OK if you have two lines and four defensemen. The years we have had success we had three or four lines. We have five ‘D’ and three
lines (this year).” Speaking of the defense, there lies the biggest strength in Rozo’s eyes. Seniors Quinn Eagen and Jon Burdzy also shared 2013’s sectional crown. They’re back to anchor a backline that has five returners and a rookie. They are part of the leadership corps that is looking to greatly distance what transpired a season ago. “It’s hungry and positive,” Rozo said of the attitude in the early going. “We start practice at 5:20 a.m., and the first week of practice everyone was on the ice by 5:10. That’s been the case every practice we have had this year. They are there early, they’re hungry, they want to work, and want to get back to where we should be.” It’s an imposing group, the defense — half of the six push at least 6-foot-2, with one being Eagen. Sophomore Ian Barker (6-foot-3, 200 pounds) and senior Jordan Knoop return and are in for substantial work. Rozo said sophomore Sean McCarthy (6-foot2, 170 pounds) has been a pleasant surprise in his
first year to this point, so he’ll factor into the blue line plans. As will senior Ian Ward. Senior Josh Stetler was last season’s starter in net, but he is out until around mid-December with a knee injury. Sophomore Dan Browne will take over until then. When Stetler comes back, Rozo expects a battle between the two for playing time. If the goaltending pans out, Rozo said, West could be in contention to play in another small schools final at First Niagara Center. And that’s where the Indians think they should be. They certainly don’t think their rightful place is losing in the prequarterfinals like last season. “At our opening meeting every year we say that our No. 1 goal is to get to First Niagara Center and play for a Section VI title,” Rozo said. “They know what to expect. We like to consider ourselves one of the more successful programs in the school. We want to put last year behind us and make sure that doesn’t happen again.”
“East” from page B1
The Trojans have as good a starting point as any to play a more defensive style in Wasilewski. Prynn noted not trying to score five goals a night — like East was doing last season — will go a long way in improving the team’s mental makeup. Emphasizing a physical two-way game where the defensive end is cleaned up first is one better suited for the postseason, anyway. “We won a lot of games just based on our skill and our speed up top last year,” Prynn said. “But what happens is you run into a game where they don’t go in for you. We have to be able to protect while generating offense and be better mentally. I think we have the guys to do it.” Up front, senior center James Wieczorek is the top returning point getter (eight goals, eight assists). He’ll be on one of the top two lines after being on the third in 2013-14. Senior winger/center Jaret Werner is versatile and is also coming off an eight-goal campaign while Corey Grys, a junior center, has varsity experience, too. The recent snowstorm has limited practice time, thus the configuration of line combinations. But those three are slated Twitter: @Garland_SUN to be in the top six.
East adds talented senior winger Trevor Izydorczak to the forward mix, as well. He played juniors for the Buffalo Stars last year. With the Trojans’ approach differing, Prynn hopes their end fortunes do, too. East has been in the Section VI Small Schools final about as much as any other program, but doesn’t have a crown. Prynn, as a member of East’s roster from 2000-03, lost a championship game in overtime and another in double OT. He also watched his younger brother lose a double-overtime title game. Then there was the early bow out from a team that dominated during last year’s regular season. But with a more rounded group, maybe the Trojans will prove they really are the team to beat. “We have another chance with a great team coming back this year,” Prynn said “Everyone is back with as much foam in the mouth as possible. With a renewed focus on playing defense and being responsible, I’m thinking we have one more crack at this thing and I think it’s going to be a good year for us.” Twitter: @Garland_SUN

Kloc’s big season culminates in All-CPOWNY honors
By Aaron Garland SPORTS REPORTER
An injury-ravaged 2013 Iroquois football season forced Matt Kloc to play some fullback. That’s despite Kloc, who said he is now around 5-foot-4, 150 pounds, being far from ideal size for the position. “I can block kids,” Kloc said. “I’m not laying them out, though. I’m good at turning kids; getting in the way and opening up a hole.” The biggest takeaway from blocking in the trenches for Kloc was gaining a greater appreciation of what made inside running click. He directly learned the blocking precision required for an effective run game, and his vision improved because of it. That was key for when Kloc returned to his normal running back spot full-time in 2014, his senior season. And with his newfound knowledge, the backfield was all his. Kloc is a power back in the body of a scatback in the sense that he prefers running between the tackles. And often. Boy, does he run often. Seemingly never tiring, Kloc rushed the ball 238
times — 26.4 times per game — for 1,359 yards and 15 touchdowns this season. It garnered him All-CPOWNY first team honors. “It’s a team sport,” said Kloc, who scored in every game. “My offensive line deserved it as much as me. I let them know that, too. I owe everything to my offensive line and my coaches. It wasn’t just me out there.” But the fact remains that the back with the secondmost carries on the team, Michael Riedel, finished the year with 18. Running so much, Kloc noted he’s sore and covered in bruises after every game. But that’s OK. “It’s an awesome pain,” he said. “Honestly, that’s the only thing that really drives me. Some plays I’ll get hit in the thighs and stomach, and my teammates will just help me up and say ‘Come on, Kloc. Keep going, Kloc. You got this.’ That completely motivates me to keep going and going.” Kloc doesn’t think about the punishment he’s enduring in the moment. The senior said there was a sense of pride that enabled him to tote the rock at least 20 times in eight out of nine games. “It’s like an addiction,” Kloc said. “As soon as you get the ball, and you get it again, and you get it again, and then they throw it, I’m kind of bummed out. I just want the ball. “When you get a good carry, you just want to go back to the huddle and do the same thing again. You feel

Matt Kloc finished the 2014 football season with an eye-popping 238 rushes, 1,359 yards and 15 touchdowns as Iroquois’ primary running back. awesome when you get the ball over and over and over again because you know that it’s working.” By and large, continuously feeding Kloc is what the Chiefs, who finished 6-3 with a Class A Chuck Funke Memorial Class championship, did. He responded with consistent gains. The quintessential Matt
Kloc Game came against McKinley in Week Five, when he carried the ball a school record 44 times, getting 264 yards and two touchdowns. His encore to that was a 306-yard, fourtouchdown outing against Lake Shore two weeks later, breaking the single-game Iroquois record for rushing yards.
“We had a couple different fullbacks in there due to injury, but Matt not only survived the whole season, he thrived,” Chiefs coach Keith Marshall said. “He is a really special football player. To rush for close to 1,400 yards in nine games is a tremendous year. I hope he looks back and realizes the sense of accomplishment
that comes along with that.” Kloc isn’t a home run guy. He’s a singles hitter who will slowly drain a defense with six-yard run after sixyard run. That’s how Kloc plans it. “I’m not fast, but I’m quick,”Kloc said. “I’ll blow by anybody within 10 yards, but 50 yards I’m going to get caught from behind. I really only broke like one big run.” His quickness is most operative at or near the line of scrimmage. Kloc, who said knowing fullback blocking patterns was beneficial this season, can find the open lane, cut quickly to avoid defenders, put on a burst, and fall forward for extra yards. That’s the essence of his game — a description that seems more appropriate for a 6-footer who weighs 200 pounds. But “I’m not good at lowering my shoulder,” Kloc said. He doesn’t need to with his elusiveness in tight spaces. The undersized Kloc made a living in the trenches this past fall. So his reaction to the linemen following every middle-distance run, which was the result of a majority of Kloc’s 238 rushes, was appropriate. “After every single good play we had, I ran back to the huddle and said ‘Nice job, guys,’’’ Kloc said. “Pat them on the back. Every single run was like that. Every one. If I gained six yards, seven yards, I’d come back to the huddle and said ‘Good job.’” Twitter: @Garland_SUN
End zone-hungry Dolac named AllCPOWNY after 17-touchdown season By Aaron Garland SPORTS REPORTER
John Dolac proved his hunger for the end zone from the get-go in 2014. The junior on the West Seneca football team scored on a pair of 1-yard dives in the Trojans’ season-opening 12-7 victory over Iroquois in September. But he only touched the ball a couple other times in the game. It painted what Dolac’s offensive role might be going forward — a bulldozing, 5-foot-11, 180-pound fullback who could get tough gains in short-yardage situations. His job on defense was outlined clearly, too, as he was already a known punishing inside linebacker after starting there as a sophomore. But Dolac, who was used sparingly on offense last year as a blocking fullback, started making the most of every time he got the ball. In Week Two he carried it six times for 94 yards and two touchdowns while adding 26 yards on two catches. Maybe he was more than a dominant defensive force, lead blocker and goal-line back. East coach Jim Maurino started calling more plays for Dolac to see what he really had in him. Week Three saw Dolac rip off 94 yards and two scores on 13 carries in addition to a 47-yard touchdown reception. That was it. Suddenly, there was no choice. Dolac was too effective to not get the ball as much as possible. From then on he officially became a heavy factor in a crowded backfield and at receiver, handling a lot of the workload. Chiefs hockey falls to St. Joe’s The Iroquois boys club hockey team suffered a 7-2 loss against St. Joe’s Sunday night (Nov. 23). The first period of play was relatively even, with Joes leading 1-0 by the end of the frame. Joe’s opened the second period with a flurry of goals, while the Chiefs could only put one on the board. Senior Richard Karalus fed a nice pass to Sasha Hawkins, who shot it into the net. It left the Marauders with a 6-1 lead through two. Iroquois goaltender Tyler Fredette did a commendable job playing through the first half of the game, as the Chiefs had difficulty keeping Joe’s away from the net. Sophomore Colton DeGrace took over in net midway through the second and finished the game, stopping numerous shots. Ryan Marshall, Pat Stenzel and Alex Held made great defensive plays for Iroquois. Sophomore forward Jamie Bonn played well and worked hard throughout the game. Defenseman Joe Giambra skated a solid game, too, and was a key penalty killer. The Chiefs kept the Marauders at one goal in the third period while Aiden Abraszek scored an unassisted goal for the Chiefs. The Chiefs next play Sunday (Nov. 30) at Jamestown.

Annunciation parish preparing for the Christmas season Rev. Siepka, former president/ rector of Christ the Seminary in East Aurora and former pastor of St. Andrew’s Church in Kenmore, has returned to the Seminary as spiritual director. Rev. Gabriel Scarfia, OFM, a professor at the Seminary, and Msgr. Jerry Sullivan, a retired diocesan priest, are also helping on weekends. Feral Cat FOCUS and local author Susan L. Sellingsloh announced the publication of her book “Feral Cat Stories: From Rescue to Love” now available on www.amazon. com (list price $14.00). All proceeds from the sale of book will go to Feral Cat FOCUS. Sellingsloh will host a book-signing event 2 to 5 p.m., on Dec. 6 at 1203 Union Road, West Seneca. Feral Cat Stories: From Rescue to Love is a collection of 23 Western New York feral cat rescue stories from local feral cat caregivers who participated in the spay/ neuter programs of Feral Cat FOCUS. The stories are both entertaining and inspiring. They not only demonstrate the success of Trap-NeuterVaccinate-Return (TNVR) programs for feral cats but the surprising and heartwarming outcomes for the cats and their compassionate caregivers. Trap-Neuter-VaccinateReturn (TNVR) is rapidly becoming the predominant approach to feral cats. There
has been a dramatic increase in the number of governments with ordinances endorsing TNVR within just the past decade, including municipalities in Western New York. Through these programs, outdoor cats are humanely trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated and returned to their outdoor environment where they are maintained with food and shelter by their trained caregivers. In the book, Feral Cat Stories: From Rescue to Love, Sellingsloh has captured the struggles and joys of local animal lovers who saw a cat on a driveway, under a bush, or in a garage and decided to help. The cats are cute but the situations are often difficult. In one story, a mother cat gave birth in a factory that was scheduled to close. In another, a newborn kitten fell down a basement drainage pipe. But in all the stories, the people eventually found help through Feral Cat FOCUS. .”

Erie 1 Boces Potter in West Seneca wins Teen Chef Challenge
The
Blue Wall
In only 60 minutes, three teams of high school seniors were challenged to create a winning meal that would win over a panel of professionals. Erie 1 BOCES brought together nearly 100 of their culinary students for a Culinary Career Day at Artisan Kitchens and Baths. Following a morning of four professional chef demonstrations, the nine teens then took the “stage” to demonstrate their own culinary chops. Participating were Erie 1 BOCES’ three career and technical centers, Harkness, Kenton and Potter, representing approximately 20 Western New York high schools. The teens from Erie 1 BOCES Potter Career & Technical Center, which is located in West Seneca, won first place with their meal of shrimp and herb stuffed chicken over stir fry garlic spinach, with roasted lemon-garlic broccoli and a twice baked apple strudel. The three-member team was comprised of Georgio Khoury of Hamburg High School, Kate Smolinski of Immaculata High School and Nijea Carter of Lackawanna High School. “I was nervous for them,” said Joseph Borgisi, culinary instructor of Potter’s winning team. “But watching them surpass their weaknesses to build upon their strengths was very gratifying. They did beautiful.” During the fast-paced cooking competition, the audience of high school seniors observed their teammates and visited representatives from Tarantino Foods, American Culinary Federation, ECC, NCCC, and Perry’s Ice Cream. Chef Ben Loomis from Wegmans also provided
