Holiday Heroes, saving lives one donor at a time By William Homan SUN CORRESPONDENT
By now, most families and friends have exchanged gifts and celebrated the holidays, but for some in Western New York, the giving never really ends. On Monday, Dec. 29, the West Seneca Police Department, Reserve Hose Company, and Vigilant Fire Company contributed their efforts to Unyts’ Holiday Heroes campaign. The campaign brings police, firefighters, and first responders from across Western New York together as they work together with Unyts to host blood drives and Donate Life Registry drives, where people are encouraged to sign up to become organ, eye, and tissue donors. In just its second year, the campaign has added five or six new local law enforcement agencies, fire departments, and first responders. However, Karen Sorrentino, relationship development manager for Unyts, spoke about the difficulties the organization faces, especially during this time of the year. “We have a lot of partnerships with different schools and colleges in the area, so a lot of the blood that we get comes from hosting blood drives during the school year,” Sorrentino explained. “During the summer and the winter, when these schools go on breaks, we have a need for people to come in and donate. West Seneca has had its share of ups and downs in 2014, but one thing remains certain, this community has a bond like no other. From a blizzard, to two floods at Lexington Green, and Winter Storm Knife, there was no telling what obstacles the town would face. Officials, residents, schools, the police department, and volunteers stepped up to help their fellow neighbors during difficult situations, which is what Supervisor Sheila Meegan says sticking together is all about. “This has been an extraordinary year having gone through blizzards and floods, but we came through it with a better appreciation for oneself and others. We met a lot of

Teale Armknecht gives blood at the Unyts’ Holiday Heroes campaign. helps tremendously.” Teale Armknecht, a local high school student, stopped in Monday afternoon to help support the campaign, noting that it is her fourth time giving blood. “I don’t necessarily know anyone who is in need, but I think that it’s a good cause and I want to help out in any way possible,” Armknecht said. While the Holiday Heroes campaign is designed specifically to help bring people out to donate during the winter months, Sorrentino stressed that there will always be a need for blood. “It really is something that we cannot have an ex-
cess of. Currently we need all blood types, but there is a specific need for O negative. Anything helps.” Tom Dispenza is another donor who when he found out that he was able to donate, did not think twice about going in. “I’ve been coming in for the past 15 months or so,” Dispenza said. “There’s a need for it all, so I’ve been coming in every other week and giving what I am able to. The cause is good.” Unyts serves as the primary provider of blood and platelet products for Kaleida Health, ECMC, and all hospitals in Niagara and Wyoming Counties. What makes the work
that they are doing even more important for Western New York is the fact that all blood donated through Unyts remains in Western New York. In addition to the blood drives, the Donate Life Registry drives help the more than 10,400 New Yorkers who are currently waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant. In fact, according to their website, Unyts is one of eight centers nationwide to house organ, tissue, and eye procurement in one location. For a list of the remaining Holiday Heroes campaign dates and for more information on the different ways to help, visit www.unyts.org.

good people and experienced a few life lessons. I want to personally thank you for all your kindness and willingness to work together,” she said. “We are in the business of doing the people’s work and it’s always about the people and not the politics when making a difference for a resolve that serves the whole community. I’m looking forward to 2015 and all the unforeseen challenges and blessings in serving this great town of ours. I am forever grateful for the opportunity to serve as your supervisor. I wish you well my friends.” West Seneca Disaster Coordinator John Gullo also had his hands full when it came to keeping the community informed on disaster issues and responding to emergency situations. However, with the help of West Seneca’s resil-
ient community, what was a fiasco one day turned into sunny skies the next. “The last year was an extremely busy year on the emergency management end of things. We experienced our share of devastation,” he said. “Hoping the New Year will bring more calm weather and have everyone enjoy their new year.” Police Chief Daniel Denz is very proud of the strides WSPD has made in 2014 to improve the department’s services. In this year alone, the department has been updated and transformed to better serve the community and its residents and he looks forward to the future ahead. “We had a good year here at the WSPD for 2014. We finalized our expansion project with a ribbon cutting, had extensive integrated training
with the local fire departments and school personnel, and helped open a new EOC; all done while handling approximately 24,000 calls for service throughout our community. My wish for 2015 is that Mother Nature gives us a break from apocalyptic snowstorms and flooding. I think she dealt us more than our fair share of nasty weather in 2014, and some benevolence from her would be greatly appreciated in the new year. But whatever she may serve up, all can rest assured that the police department is prepared to serve and protect the residents and business owners of this great town. Best wishes for a happy and blessed New Year to everyone. So there you have it, folks. Here’s to a promising year for West Seneca in 2015.
INSIDE THIS ISSUE:
The West Seneca Chamber of Commerce recently announced its pick for the 2015 Citizen of the Year award, bestowing the honor upon Dolores Mendolia, the former director of public relations for the West Seneca Central School District. Besides working for the district for 31 years, Mendolia is a founding member of the Burchfield Nature and Art Center, as well as the former president of the West Seneca Historical Society. While no longer employed with the school district, Mendolia has no shortage of volunteering experience in the community. Aside from volunteering with West Seneca schools in different capacities, Mendolia has spent close to 30 years playing the role of “Mother Goose” and working to help foster the Creative Dramatics Programs in public parochial schools in: West Seneca, Orchard Park, East Aurora, Hamburg, Cheektowaga, Tonawanda, Lackawanna, Buffalo, Depew and Wales Elementary Schools, Burchfield Nature and Art Center, and Cradle Beach among others. She also recently finished another season of playing the role of “Mrs. Claus” for the Christmas stories at West Seneca’s “Breakfast with Santa” and other community groups, and during the horse-driven rides at Southgate Plaza. Current West Seneca Central School District Board president Mary Busse has had a lifelong relationship, both personal and professional, with Mendolia and couldn’t think of a better person to receive the award. “She’s just one of those people that has a certain flair about them,” Busse explained. “It’s hard to put it into words, but she is so well respected and has a touching, kind personality. I’ll truly never forget her.” While Mendolia’s long list of accolades and volunteer experience appear impressive to most, she is the first to downplay the award, noting that there are so many in the community who are just as deserving. “When I found out that I won, I was absolutely awed,” she exclaimed. “There are so many people that deserve the award, I just can’t express it.” A strong advocate for children, Mendolia serves as the chairperson for the Terrific Kids Program with the Kiwanis Club of West Seneca. In addition to that role and her other volunteer opportunities, she also spends, or has spent time, helping at Canisius College, University at Buffalo, Erie County School Board’s Association, and Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. While she likes to do things for others to make them feel better, a personal satisfaction comes out of it as well. “We only come by this way once, so it’s important to do the best you can for others,” Mendolia said. “That’s always been my philosophy. I love my community and I’m so thankful to receive this award.” The West Seneca Chamber of Commerce hosts their 68th annual Community Awards Dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 12 at Kotecki’s Grandview Grove. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres begin at 5:30 p.m., with the dinner and awards scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $40 for an individual ticket, $80 for a couple, and $320 for a table of eight. Tickets are available for purchase through the West Seneca Chamber of Commerce.

After having spent a handful of years at the middle school level, West Seneca Central School district teacher Patrick Braunscheidel took a position as football coach and as a result moved to the high school level in 1999. Following his first year, he was certain that he had made a mistake. “It was a big change, and to be honest, I considered taking another position somewhere else. But, each day I got more and more satisfaction out of being there.” Almost 15 years after making that decision to stay at West Seneca East High School, the West Seneca Chamber of Commerce is honoring him as the 2015 Educator of the Year. Braunscheidel, who currently teaches U.S. History, has spent 24 years in the West Seneca School District as a classroom teacher. In addition to teaching, Braunscheidel serves as a facilitator/mentor at Winchester Elementary, a volunteer football coach at West Seneca West Senior High School. He also created and helps maintain “Freedom Hall,” which is dedicated to East graduates
who served, and he conducts home visits for suspended students. Among the other things Braunscheidel is involved with are the co-organization of the Veteran’s Day Commemoration at West Seneca East Senior High School, the organization/facilitation of Interfaith Service for West Seneca students and families, and he endows two memorial scholarships (Corinne Braunscheidel (West Senior) and Lily Kay O’Connor (East Senior)). Braunscheidel is also involved with the West Seneca Food Pantry. While his list of affiliations and out of school involvements is long, for most people that know Braunscheidel, his ability to connect with his students proves to be his defining quality. Carol Brimmer ’s son, Maximilian, was one of many students who were fortunate enough to have him in class. “I think the one thing that always struck me as important was that he teaches his students so much more than book smarts, Carol Brimmer said. “He is respectful to students and makes them want to do their best. He shapes their minds and their

that’s exactly what we did,” Braunscheidel explained. “We want to be in a neighborhood where we work, we want to be neighbors with people we work with, and we are lucky to be a part of the community.” Braunscheidel went on to stress that although he is appreciative of the honor, he’s the one that should feel lucky to have experienced and continue to experience the families of West Seneca. “I don’t know how many sets of families I’ve taught, but they are the ones that make me a better person. If I have done the same to their children then it is an honor. To me I’m the one who is lucky, not the other way around.” The West Seneca Chamber of Commerce hosts their 68th annual Community Awards Dinner beginning at 5:30 p.m., on Thursday, Feb. 12 at Kotecki’s Grandview Grove. hearts and he is an excellent person.” For Braunscheidel, the news of the award came as a surprise. “I never really intended to have any of this recognized,” he explained. “It’s hard to process because I’m the one who is lucky and blessed to be where I am and I’m being honored for something that I love to do.” While Braunscheidel noted that he brings in poetry, music, and video clips into his teachings in an effort to make the people the students are learning about come alive, he is also there to help establish ethics and moral guidelines. “It’s my job to hold the mirror up to them and show them what they can be.” When it comes down to it, Braunscheidel is more than just a teacher in the West Seneca Central School District. His wife teaches in the district, his son attended West Seneca Schools, and his daughter currently attends West Seneca Schools. “There was a time when we were looking for another house and we wanted another bathroom. We couldn’t find anything else in the community that met our requirements, so when they told us that we could add a bathroom to our basement,

WNY military honored at Russell’s Steaks, Chops & More
By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR
During the holiday season, it is easy sometime to just think about yourself and your family. The hustle and bustle of this time of year normally has something to do with that. So, when someone takes the time do something nice for others, it makes the holidays that much more special. Russell Salvatore didn’t need to go out of his way Sunday night to put on a special dinner at Russell’s Steaks, Chops & More. He wanted to. Salvatore hosted 18 young men and women, and their families, in a show of appreciation for their dedication and service to the United States. All the young men and women that were honored are attending West Point, the Naval Academy and the Air Force Academy. “To me it feels great, said Salvatore, before the reception started. I feel very, very proud to do this. The entire staff feels very proud. It shows that we have fine young people growing up in the United States. The event had all the young men and women from Western New York dress up in their dress uniforms. It started off with a reception at 5:30 p.m. before dinner at 7 p.m. During the reception,
it gave these young individuals a chance to catch up with friends and family. After the reception, all the Cadets and Midshipmen where introduced one by one before into the dining room. From there a prayer was given, followed by a toast. The generosity given by Salvatore and his staff was not lost on the Cadets from West Point. Williamsville South High School graduate Maria Manna said she was able to talk to Salvatore during the reception and thanked him for everything he did for them. “We our so appreciative of it [the dinner], stated Manna. “He [Mr. Salvatore] is so generous to do this. He was enjoying himself, I think. “ Giving back to the community is nothing new for Salvatore. For years he has helped out the Western New York community in different ways. This was just one more thing he wanted to do for those young men and women who chose to attend one of the academies and fight and defend the country from different acts of war. “It feels great, stated Salvatore. “It always feels great to give back to anyone who served our country. We did everything we could for them. It feels good. They are great looking young men and women.

Queen of Heaven School students participate in Diocese of Buffalo’s STREAM initiative: Vex Robotics
PHOTO SUBMITTED PHOTO SUBMITTED
Students complete tasks using the robot they built. This year, Queen of Heaven School students had a new after-school activity to participate in for the Diocese of Buffalo’s STREAM initiative; Vex Robotics. Students in middle school learned how to collab-
oratively create two vex robots and participated in a Diocesan-wide competition entitled Highrise. Robotics was a learning experience for all parties involved. Destiny, a 7th grader at Queen of Heaven
School, talks about her experience in this 10-week after school course; “I participated in robotics this year and had an awesome time! We spent weeks building our robots and practicing with them for the competi-
tion. We came across a few bumps in the road, but we overcame them and did our best in the competition. Even though we did not get into the final four we did pretty good and had fun doing it.
“Robotics taught students about the importance of teamwork, while offering them the opportunity to further dive into the world of technology, specifically in the ever-evolving field of robotics. This is definitely
a course that will be here to stay. There is already a waiting list for the second round of the course which is slated to begin in late January. says Mrs. Aimee Bloom, robotics instructor at Queen of Heaven School.

Erie County presents sobriety checkpoint trailer to New York State Police Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined by Commissioner of Central Police Services John Glascott, Director of the Erie County STOP-DWI Office John Sullivan, and Lieutenant Kevin Barnas of Troop A of the New York State Police (“NYSP”) on Tuesday to present the NYSP with a new trailer to expand law enforcement’s capacity to conduct sobriety checkpoints in Erie County. The trailer, which was purchased with DWI fine revenue and will be used by Troop A, is a 10-foot tow-behind version marked with Erie County STOP-DWI and NYSP logos. “The anti-DWI partnership between Erie County and the New York State Police is critical to keeping impaired drivers off the road, catching those who do get behind the wheel, and keeping all residents safer. Especially at the holidays, we want all motorists to be aware of the dangers of drunk driving and to know that law enforce-
ment is looking for them,” said Poloncarz. “This trailer will allow greater flexibility and mobility for law enforcement while conducting sobriety checkpoints and will bring to the field the resources they need to do so in a safe, efficient and effective manner.” The trailer was purchased with $4,100 in DWI fine revenues and will be donated to the NYSP Foundation, an Albany-based organization, for use by NYSP Troop A, which patrols in Erie County. The NYSP will also acquire the cones, signage, and other traffic control materials to be transported within it. Prior to this, traffic control services at all sobriety checkpoints in Erie County (including those being conducted by the NYSP) had been supplied and funded solely by the Erie County STOP-DWI office. The NYSP, which has its own traffic control protocol, will now be able to conduct both law enforcement and traffic control functions
at a checkpoint with no additional cost to Erie County STOP-DWI. “Having traffic control material in one location and easily deliverable to any location makes checkpoints easier to perform and more efficiently organized,” added Commissioner Glascott. “This partnership strengthens both parties, with motorists and all county residents benefiting as potentially dangerous drivers are removed from the roads.” Director of the Erie County STOP-DWI Office John Sullivan said, “The State Police are an important partner in Erie County DWI prevention efforts. Troopers regularly join officers and deputies from 22 other Erie County police agencies to perform highly visible enforcement, create a deterrent, and apprehend drunken drivers before they hurt someone. We are pleased to add this additional capacity to our enforcement efforts.”

Senate to hold joint committee hearings in January about police safety, public protection The New York State Senate will hold a series of public hearings convened by four Senate committees starting in early January to examine police safety and public protection in New York City and throughout the state. The hearings will review serious safety concerns raised by the shooting deaths of two NYPD Officers, Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, in addition to other recent attacks and hostility directed at law enforcement. Senate Co-Leader Dean G. Skelos said, “Police officers have an extraordinarily difficult and dangerous job to do and it’s incumbent upon both the city and the state to give these individuals the support they need and ensure they are always treated like the first-class professionals we know them to be. By convening these important hearings, the State Senate is sending a clear and convincing signal that police officers should have every tool they need to promote public safety
and protect and defend themselves.” The hearings will be held in New York City and Albany and provide a thorough and balanced review of the city’s and state’s criminal justice systems. The senators will receive input from law enforcement, legal scholars, city and state officials, and district attorneys on issues that include: - The safety of police officers, in New York City and the rest of the state, in the current climate; - Statistics on assaults upon police officers and discussions about adequate training and equipment and the risks the police must take while in the line of duty; - The impact of community policing; - The need for state action to assure adequate police disability and death benefits, impose stricter penalties and deny bail for people who assault police officers and/ or make threats to the police, and provide increased treatment for criminals with mental illnesses, among
other measures; and - The grand jury process and procedure. The following NYS Senate Standing Committees, which will have subpoena powers, will jointly hold the hearings: Codes, chaired by Senator Michael Nozzolio (R-C, Fayette); Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections, chaired by Senator Pat Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma); Investigations and Government Operations, chaired by Senator Carl L. Marcellino (R, Syosset); and Civil Service and Pensions, chaired by Senator Martin Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn). Dates and locations are being confirmed and will be announced once finalized. Senator Nozzolio said, “As Chairman of the New York State Senate Codes Committee, and former Chairman of the Crime Victims, Crime and Corrections Committee, I applaud Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos’ efforts, and the work of our Senate Republican Conference to strengthen New York’s criminal justice
laws. We will not tolerate the senseless acts of violence against our citizens, nor the profoundly violent acts of cowardice targeted against our police officers and first responders as they put their lives on the line every day to protect us. Ensuring the safety of our police officers and first responders has never been more important. Whether in New York City, in Rochester, or along the shores of Lake Ontario in Webster, these cold-blooded assassinations against our heroic first responders are attacks against all of us, and must not be tolerated or forgotten. As we begin this review to strengthen New York’s criminal justice laws to protect our citizens and police officers, we also must place more focused attention on preventing criminal behavior by the mentally ill in our state. Additionally, we need to do all possible to protect the public from violent felons who show no remorse for their crimes and exhibit a dangerous propensity for violence.”
West Senior shows generosity through holiday gift giving West Senior students and staff worked together on several holiday giving projects this year. West Senior’s Key Club sponsored its annual Giving Tree. Gifts were donated for 76 children in West Seneca. In addition, the Crushing Cancer Club collected gifts for Carly’s Club. One Crushing Cancer Club member, Ashley Bohne, went above and beyond the request. She asked family and friends to purchase a gift for a child at Roswell this holiday season and collected over two dozen gifts for children. The DECA Club members made handmade Christmas cards for Elderwood nursing home. Business classes sent Christmas cards to Holiday Mail for Heroes, which delivers cards to injured soldiers. WSW Senior Student Council and the Social Studies Department coordinated a Sponsor a Family project. Money was raised for local families to purchase perishable items for Christmas dinners. The monies donated were given to the Lions Club to be disseminated
accordingly. Key Club also coordinated a food drive with students and staff collecting over 800 cans of food in November that will be sent to families in need. The Bel Canto Singers and String Ensemble performed for the patients and staff at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. The students performed for patients, family members and staff of the Institute for the 15th year in a row. The String Ensemble also performed for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Holiday Gathering at Pettibone’s Restaurant. West Senior’s National Honor Society members held their annual Santa on the Bridge where staff members dressed up as Santa and Mrs. Claus. Students made donations to have their pictures taken, participated in games and purchased healthy snack items. All monies raised at Santa on the Bridge will be donated to Reserve Hose Company in memory of Ron Piwowarczyk, a longtime security guard at West Senior who passed away in September.

Senator Gallivan said, “As a former New York State Trooper and Sheriff of Erie County, I believe the first step in making sure our communities are safe is to ensure the safety of those who have taken an oath to serve and protect their fellow citizens. I also believe it is in everyone’s best interest to make sure our law enforcement officers across the state are the best trained and best equipped. As legislators, it is our responsibility to review procedures and policies, fully examine them, and thoroughly debate them. I look forward to hearing from the law enforcement community, legal scholars and others to help determine if reforms to our criminal justice system are warranted, while at the same time ensuring both police and public safety.” Senator Marcellino said, “Our communities are safer because of the sacrifices police officers and first responders make every day. It is a tough job and we must do all that we can to see that
their jobs aren’t made even more difficult. It is time that we use all our available resources to review our laws and training procedures so that we protect both the rights of citizens and the safety of our police force.” Senator Golden said, “As a former New York City Police Officer, I stand ready to work with my colleagues and hold these important hearings in the new year. It is our belief that a review of the current structure of governance protecting our law enforcement officers must be conducted. We look forward to the participation of many public safety experts as we review training procedures, pension and disability benefits, and discuss better ways to protect those who keep us safe. The safety of our city and state depends on the strength and support we give those who serve and guard us, and we must make sure we do everything in our power to guarantee their safety.”
Grant to support early child care programs Child Care Resource Network (CCRN) will become a new Cavity Free Kids hub and will train and support early child care programs in successfully using CHOMPERS: Cavity Free Kids curriculum to help young children impacted by poverty develop lifelong healthy dental habits and better oral health. The grant for $20,000 was given in August and will provide training and services to child care programs through January 2016. Through the CHOMPERS program, CCRN will work with family and group family early child care programs in the highpoverty zip codes of Buffalo. Children birth through 5 years old will be the focus of outreach and education. When speaking about the implementation of the grant, CCRN CEO Lynn Pullano said, “More than 65 percent of young children in Buffalo live in poverty. They are
often at risk for dental problems that can interfere with eating, speaking and learning—making it even more difficult for them to succeed in school and later in life. We’re grateful that the foundation recognizes how essential early dental health is to long-term well-being.” Since 1987, Child Care Resource Network has advocated for quality child care and education for all children. CCRN is a nonprofit organization providing child care referral services and resources for families, child care provider registration and licensure, continuing education for child care providers and nutrition resources for child care providers. Its mission is to support families, child care providers, employers and the community by developing and advocating for high quality, accessible and affordable child care and education for all children.

Bon-Ton Stores make $10,000 donation to American Red Cross The American Red Cross is proud to announce that The Bon-Ton Stores have made a $10,000 donation to support Red Cross disaster relief efforts. Bon-Ton locations in Southgate Plaza, McKinley Mall, Eastern Hills Mall, Sheridan/Delaware Plaza, Lockport Mall and Summit Park Mall donated two percent sales on Dec. 5 to Dec. 6 in response to the recent lake effect snowstorm in Western New York. “On behalf of the American Red Cross, I want to say thank you to everyone at the Bon-Ton stores for this incredibly generous donation,” said Chuck Marra, Executive Director of the Western New York Chapter. “Support such as this allows our volunteers to perform our vital mission of helping this community prevent, prepare for and respond to disasters
from snow storms to house fires, 365 days a year.” “Many of our associates and customers were affected by this unprecedented storm,” said Steve Byers, Executive Vice President of Stores of The Bon-Ton Stores, Inc. “We are delighted to support the fine work of the American Red Cross, its employees, and volunteers.” On Nov. 18, a lake effect storm buried much of Western New York in several feet of snow, stranding travelers and forcing evacuations across the region. Over 175 Red Cross staff and volunteers operated or supported 19 shelters, providing 603 overnight stays; served 6,696 meals and snacks; distributed 3,939 relief items including cleanup and personal comfort kits; and provided 1,019 health and mental
health contacts to help people deal with the impact of this winter storm. The single biggest disaster the American Red Cross responds to is house fires. In the eight counties currently covered by the Western New York Chapter, the Red Cross responded to 383 separate fires between July 1, 2013June 30, 2014, providing food, clothing, shelter and support to 625 families. The Red Cross provides an average of just over $1,000 in direct financial assistance when responding to a single house fire affecting a family of four. To make a financial donation to help those affected by winter storms, house fires, and other disasters, please visit www.redcross. org, call 1-800-REDCROSS, or text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to charge a $10 donation to your cell phone bill.

Hubbard Film Society to screen black comedy Bernie
This month, The Hubbard Film Society presents the 2012 black comedy, Bernie, starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey, and written and directed by the acclaimed Richard Linklater (Boyhood, After Sunrise, After Sunset, After Midnight). Based on a true 1996 story, Bernie is about a muchloved mortician (Black) in a small Texas town who befriends the town’s most cantankerous elderly widow (MacLaine). She dominates his life to the breaking point for Bernie, and he finally snaps. Despite his drastic actions, the town rallies behind him, much to the chagrin of the local D.A. (McConaughey). Linklater even used many of these locals in the film, expressing their feelings for Bernie. This film is especially relevant, because a huge turn of events just happened last spring that will surprise the audience! Bernie will be shown on Sunday, January 11 at 4 p.m. at the Parkdale Auditorium, 141 Girard Ave., East Aurora. Please join us, and stay for the post-film discussion. Back in spring 2012, Erie County’s community college students couldn’t take advantage of a New York grant program that allows volunteer firefighters to receive tuition reimbursement in exchange for first responder service. Fast forward to the days leading into 2015, when Erie Community College officials can now boast the state’s highest enrollment numbers under the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York Higher Education Learning Plan. And thanks to this increased attendance— with nearly 150 students registered as of the Fall 2014 semester—ECC can also report over $500,000 in additional student tuition due to opportunities afforded under the FASNY plan. “I am pleased to learn that a notable number of students are taking advantage of the FASNY tuition program and committing themselves to serve their volunteer fire company,” said Erie County Legislator Edward Rath, a leading proponent of the program and its benefits to county residents. “This program is a great

For over seventeen years, the Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School Community has adopted several families within the local community who are facing challenging times and hardships. This year, fourteen families received gifts from students, faculty and staff as well as alumni families who participated in purchasing items on the family’s wish list. Personalized wish lists include items such as clothing, toys, books, art
benefit for the community, fire departments, ECC and students. I hope that we continue to see an increase in participation and applaud those who have enrolled in the program, earning a quality education while serving those in need.” The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) developed the plan as an incentive for people to serve in volunteer fire service. New York’s volunteer fire departments are currently experiencing a critical need to recruit and retain members. As an incentive for people to serve, FASNY developed the Higher Education Learning Plan (FASNY HELP). This program provides tuition reimbursement to individuals attending community college for up to eighty (80) credit hours and, according to ECC President Jack Quinn, provides area residents yet another way to take advantage of the three-campus college’s career-focused education. “We at ECC are very proud of the successes we’ve experienced through the FASNY program,” said Quinn. “We’re here for the community, so we’re thrilled to offer area residents yet another way to pursue affordable educational opportunities.” According to ECC FASNY Tuition Representative Tom Chmielowiec, the college has taken in approximately $534,603.41—from a combination of FASNY assistance, TAP and PEL grant monies, and student payment—since the program’s inception in fall 2012. He also reports that 204 students are currently on ECC’s roster to apply for FASNY assistance, and the college plans to welcome more applications as the successes of the program spread across the region. “ECC is very proud and honored to be part of the FASNY Program and to be able to serve our firefighters with the education needs they have,” said Chmielowiec, who reports that students are currently enrolled in 18 of ECC’s FASNY-approved programs like Criminal Justice and Nursing. Under FASNY HELP,
student-volunteers are eligible to have up to 100% of their tuition reimbursed in exchange for maintaining their grades and fulfilling defined service requirements. They must also be a “member in good standing” in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies during both their school years and service payback period. And, if they’re in good standing, they’ll be good firefighters on the job, something Steve DiPasquale—a 39-year member of the North Amherst Volunteer Fire Department— notes as essential to Erie County. “It’s with great pride to know that the volunteer firemen of Erie County have embraced the program, utilized it as it was meant to be and, in the end, ECC has benefitted greatly,” said DiPasquale. “This program has been a win for all of Erie County and I would like to thank everyone that was involved from the beginning and congratulate all on a job well done.” It’s not too late for new students/recruits to take advantage of the HELP grant for the spring semester. As outlined by FASNY, students who meet the requirements, including a 4.0 GPA, are eligible for full reimbursement. Students recording a 3.03.99 GPA receive 85 percent reimbursement and a GPA between 2.0-2.99 earns them 75 percent reimbursement. The grant program also requires that students/ volunteers meet the necessary service demands of their fire department. Interested residents can learn more about the program by contacting their local fire department. More to Parucki than perimeter play Senior sharpshooter evolves, adds post dimensions to game By Aaron Garland SPORTS REPORTER
A couple years ago Nick Parucki was fixated on the outside jumper. And for good reason. As a sophomore in 2012-13, he led the West Seneca East boys basketball team with 11 points per game, with much of that output coming via the 3 ball. While that was happening, though, a whole other side of his game was being masked. Last season, it started to show, and since, Parucki has become a premier player because he unleashed it. The 6-foot-5 senior center now has an effective post game to go with his sharpshooting. He learned how much more dangerous he could be by using his size down low, and he followed through on that vision. He again is leading the Trojans — who are off to a 2-2 start, as of Dec. 28 — in scoring, only he’s getting his 16.5 points per game a multitude of ways. Making matters worse for defenders, Parucki is a lefty, which adds to the difficulty and unconventionality of guarding him. “He always had a knack for finding a way to score, and over the last two years he’s really expanded that even more,” East coach Dan Lutman said. “Now that he’s developed all that, he’s really a nightmare to guard. If he has a big on him, he can take him outside and if he has someone small on him, he can take them down low and score down there.”

Bishop Timon basketball’s 4OT A Day to remember: win over St. Mary’s sparks team Iroquois grappler By Mike Pidanick SPORTS REPORTER
Off to a sluggish start to the boys basketball season, Bishop Timon was in need of a spark. One of the more memorable victories the program has seen in a while just might be what was needed. Two days before Christmas, the Tigers endured four overtimes at St. Mary’s of Lancaster and escaped with a hard-fought 82-80 Monsignor Martin Athletic Association victory - one Timon hopes will prove to be a springboard to bigger success. “We needed that,” Tigers coach Joe Mihalics said. “We needed to know we can still battle, even though we have a lot of cleaning up to do. But it’s a great win, these kids really battled and left everything on the floor.” The slow start for the Tigers came after a snow-

kept several basketball players busy. Timon opened the season 1-4 on the hardwood against its usually-tough
non-league schedule. The league opener was also expected to be a good one - but not this good. In a rematch of last year’s Manhattan Cup semifinal, won by the Tigers, Timon had to work for 2 1/2 hours to get a MMAA victory. “That win was crazy,” Tigers senior Claudious Modi said. “First league game, to win like that, I’m proud of my teammates. We all battled; I was just tired at the end of game - we all were, but we kept on going.” The Dec. 23 marathon featured a number of standouts for the Tigers, who needed everyone to hold off the heroics of Lancers’ star Takal Molson. Timon got a number of clutch shots in the fourth quarter and overtimes from the likes of Joe Harrison, who led the team with 21 points, as well as Will and Quinton Lamar.

passes father on all-time wins list
By Aaron Garland SPORTS REPORTER
Connor Day will tap into any resource available to him. Couple that with a steadfast drive to succeed, and the result is a wrestler who is compiling a career at Iroquois to be remembered. The latest accomplishment for Day as a Chief was on Dec. 13, when he tied his father, Kevin Day, a 1987 Iroquois graduate, on the school’s alltime wins list (104). Connor Day, a sophomore, has since
upped his career victory total to 111, as of Dec. 28. He is 19-2 on the year. It was an uncommon occurrence — a son surpassing his father in a career category at the same place — but not one that was unforeseen. “There was a little talk about it, but he knew it was going to happen,” Connor Day said. “It feels good to be named in the same group as my Dad. I look up to him and he’s been a role model to me since I was little.” Connor Day has been on the upswing for some time now, with his triple-digit wins over three-plus years and third-place showing at sectionals last winter being chief exhibits.

East track competes at WNY Small School Relays The West Seneca East boys and girls indoor track and field teams were at SUNY Fredonia for the Western New York Small Schools Relays Dec. 27. Below are the top finishers for the Trojans. • For the boys, who finished sixth overall as a team, senior Dale Nicosia, junior Matt
Wallace, eighth grader Ray Sambrotto and sophomore Derek Madge comprised the 4x800 relay squad that placed fourth (9:48.40). • Sophomore Tanner Zubler and freshman Josh Glaub paired to be part of a second-place showing, tied for East’s highest finish of the day, in the 1,600 relay with a combined time of 10:15.70. • The 2x4x160 relay quartet of sophomore Jonny Irace, junior Brandon Dutka, junior Jalexis Santiago and seventh grader
Jamie Sullivan finished sixth (3:07.00). • Zubler, eighth grader Ray Sambrotto, Nicosia and Glaub teamed to take second in the distance medley relay, racing to a time of 12:25.60. • Junior Ray Johnson, eighth grader Anthony Bullis, junior Brandon Dutka and Santiago registered a fourth-place showing in the 4x200 relay (1:48.70). • The long jump relay saw Johnson and Irace place fourth as a team, combining to leap 33 feet, 2 3/4 inches.
• Freshman Sal Zagarrigo and Johnson participated in the high jump relay and they were third (combined jump of 9 feet, 8 inches). • On the girls side, seniors Leanne Glaub and Alexa Billingslea and sophomores Emily Dauer and Savanah Murray ran an 11:54.50 in the 4x800-meter relay to place fifth. • Eighth grader Summer Grandinetti recorded a personal best time of 12.53 seconds in the 55-meter hurdles relay. • Billingslea and Dauer took
fifth in the 1,500 run relay with a combined time of 12:34.80. • In the 2x4x160 relay, the team of freshman Megen Landahl, sophomore Azure Pitts, junior Jamie Boyer and freshman Megan Matusiak finished in third (3:27.80). • Freshman Kara Sztaba and eighth grader Summer Grandinetti partook in the triple jump relay, taking fifth with a combined jump of 51 feet, 8 3/4 inches. “The meet was particularly impressive for our boys team,
which placed in all but one of the events it competed in,” East coach Jill Tulowiecki said. “Our boys roster has doubled in size from years past, and that depth is able to shine in meets such as this. We are looking forward to running the fast tracks of Houghton and Brockport in the weeks to come to really see where we stand among the best runners in Section VI.” The Trojans ran at the Houghton Invitational Dec. 30, but results of the meet were not available at press time.
Bout with St. Joe’s Like his game, Parucki’s leadership evolves set to open Timon’s league slate “Parucki” from page 9
“Tigers” from page 9 “A game like that, everybody battled their heart out, it’s a shame somebody had to lose,” Mihalics said. “It was a battle; the guys were fighting for every loose ball, big shots both ways. It was a fun game early in the year.” League play finally gets into full swing for Timon on Jan. 6 with a battle against St. Joe’s. After reaching the
finals last year, the Tigers have their sights set on winning it all in 2015. And if the first taste of league is a sign of things to come, it’ll be a long and fun ride. “It’s a good win for us,” Harrison said outside the visiting locker room at St. Mary’s. “It’s a big momentum boost and always great to get a Monsignor Martin win.”
Junior Team Tennis kickoff event to be held
USTA Eastern’s Buffalo region will hold its Junior Team Tennis (JTT) kickoff and registration event from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 11 at South Towns Tennis Club. During the kickoff event, junior players will have the opportunity to participate in shortened matches in a fun, social atmosphere. The kickoff event is free. Prior to attending, all players must register by calling South Towns Tennis Club (716-662-9396) or emailing jrteamtennisbuffalo@ gmail.com. “Kids ages 8 to 18 years of age can join one of the local leagues where they can get plenty of match play in a team setting, make friends and have a lot of fun,” said Maria Lirio, USTA Eastern’s manager of Junior Team Tennis. Established in 1991, USTA Junior Team Tennis provides youth with all of the health and social benefits of tennis in a co-ed, fun and competitive team environment, and allows participants to compete with and against individuals of similar skill and age levels. USTA Junior Team Tennis is also a fun environment for kids to learn that succeeding is really
more about how they play the game—win or lose. Buffalo Junior Team Tennis is made available through the Buffalo Niagara Community Tennis Association. For additional information visit, bncta.org.

Parucki fine-tuning his allaround game has made the Trojans a more complete team, too. His scoring rate is down a tad from last year, when he was going for 17.7 points a night, but he’s also more efficient across the board, with his shot selection and assist totals improved while leading the team in rebounding (nine per contest). Double teams occur often against Parucki, and when they do, he has the awareness to kick the ball out to an open man on the perimeter. “When your jump shot is off, then you can just go to the basket and get to the freethrow line,” Parucki said. “And it sets others up well. A lot of times when I get the ball down low and I score a few times, a double team is coming and other guys are wide open.” It’s all come with mental maturation, Lutman said. The coach noted that early in Parucki’s varsity career, he was a little too concerned with individual performance. Last year, Lutman saw the start of him wanting it to be more about the team, and that has been taken to another level early in 2014-15. Parucki is one of four captains, and has been like a second coach on the floor at times, Lutman noted. “I’ve never had a player make the jump maturity-wise to being this great of a leader, a captain, a team player, just putting the team first over his individual accomplishments,” the fourth-year coach said. “It’s been an amazing jump for him. He can get 20 points and still get other guys involved and make this a more wellrounded team.” The change in approach was an emphasis for Parucki as his career has progressed. Much like the way he worked on his inside prowess to make him a viable, dangerous dual threat, the senior wanted a better team mentality. “It’s the key,” Parucki said. “If you don’t go out there and have leadership, you’re not going to be able to be very good. “It was great,” he added on being selected as a captain. “I
JEFFREY T. BARNES
Parucki was selected by head coach Dan Lutman as one of West Seneca East’s captains this season. thought I earned it. The last few years I know my attitude wasn’t the best, and now I have a much better attitude.” He grasped that aspect of the game, and has elevated it to high ground. Parucki is the star scorer who doesn’t care if he gets his points, as long as Trojans get enough of them. The evolution of his twoway game and ability to finish
strong at the rim is sharpened greatly by the heavy stress he placed on the team game and being a model for younger guys. Sure, Parucki is the go-to, dependable source for points late in tight games, but he’s also so much more before it gets to that point. “His (offensive skill) is rare, and the maturity to go along with it is even more rare,” Lutman said. “He has
colleges looking at him to go and play Division III basketball. Without that maturity, he might be an average player. Now colleges are hungry for him to play for them. “He’s the best player this school has had since I’ve been here, and all the credit goes to him to get to this spot.” Twitter: Garland_SUN
Day’s bloodlines had him on competitive mats at young age “Day” from page 9 He is emerging as one of Section VI’s best wrestlers and is a true threat to qualify for states later this season, and his father has been a primary influence on that. After his days competing at Iroquois were over, Kevin Day was the longtime coach of Kenmore West’s team until stepping down a couple years ago. During that time, he left a spacious impression across not only the wrestling scene in Western New York, but in many areas, and made a garage-type structure on the family’s property into a wrestling room. As such, Connor Day was wrestling when he was 5
years old. And starting in sixth grade, he was participating in established national tournaments in Virginia Beach, Pennsylvania and at the renowned Ohio Tournament of Champions. Connor Day has seen just about as elite of competition a kid his age can square up against. Kevin Day, as knowledgeable and involved as he is in the sport, was able to seek out opportunities for Connor Day and his younger brother, eighth grader Cory Day, who is another up-and-coming Chief, to perform on an exclusive platform. “He knows a lot of people in the sport,” Connor Day said
of his father. “He just knows where to go. “Those tournaments just made me like the sport a lot more. They have helped me get better not only in my wrestling, but I was able to meet friends and just enjoy the sport by meeting people from different parts of the country.” Connor Day has certainly used the national stage to his benefit. After a prosperous freshman campaign in the 106-pound weight class, Connor Day jumped to 126 in 2014-15, and has gotten more dominant. “He is very unorthodox,” said Iroquois wrestling coach Andrew Stella, who has
known Kevin Day since his time as a competitor at Sweet Home. “He hits moves that nobody else can hit in different positions. When you start to think you’re going to take him down, he’ll do a roll and take you down. That’s his style. “He’s always willing to learn and listen to his coaches and get better.” Stella added that Connor Day is “always wrestling.” He means that almost literally, too. Connor Day noted he’ll work in the facility at his house, which can hold between 12-14 kids, he said, two or three times per week. And often, wrestlers he knows from across the sec-
tion drop by for sessions there. “They just come over and we get a good practice in a few times a week,” Connor Day said. “It has helped me greatly.” When he’s not at home or on the road at topnotch tournaments year-round, Connor Day has another valuable resource in Stella, who wrestled at the University at Buffalo. The Chiefs’ coach said there are parallels between the Days and his own family, which was equally dedicated to the sport and also had a wrestling room at home. It has allowed Stella, whose father was a referee, to identify with Connor Day’s passion.
Stella said seeing that makes him want to do everything he can to aid in the sophomore’s pursuit of making states for the first time, which would only add illumination to a blossoming career. “I see the same connection between his family that I do with mine,” Stella said. “It’s something that I love to see because he just wants to wrestle all the time. It’s just in their blood. They love it. “He’s one of my favorite kids to coach in the room. I hope he reaches his goals, and I am going to help him every step of the way.” Twitter: @Garland_SUN

Students visit Mercy Flight The Health Care Career Club at Timon offers our young men the opportunity to explore the field of health care as a possible career choice. Our students attend field trips during the school year to health care sites such as Mercy Flight, The American Red Cross, the Harmac Medical Supply Company, and Dental Clinics, as well as various colleges and universities that
provide training in health care professions. Membership in the Health Care Career Club leads to participation in the Health Care and Health Sciences Pathway Program for our students in the junior and senior years. This program offers rotations and internships to our upper class students at various health care sites. This exploration into the
health care realm is offered through a partnership with Bishop Timon-St. Jude High School, Mount Mercy Academy, the Catholic Health Care System, and Trocaire College. It is a wonderful opportunity for our students to learn about the clinical and non-clinical career opportunities in the growing health care field throughout their years at Bishop Timon.
Lifetime Health Medical to close operations in West Seneca Lifetime Health Medical Group will be closing operations at the West Seneca Health Center on January 30, 2015 and consolidating all services to their other Buffalo area locations. The West Seneca providers will be moving to their Amherst and Hamburg locations. With the recent departures of five providers at the West Seneca Health Center, the decision to move clinical services into their other locations was made, after careful consideration of Lifetime Health’s ability to continue to provide the highest level of care for the site’s patients. All adult patients can continue to see their regular Lifetime Health provider at their new locations within the group, and will not need to do anything else to continue
their care. Pediatric patients may choose another pediatric practice within the group, or a community pediatric provider of their choice. Lifetime Health has given them information of pediatric offices in the West Seneca area that are accepting new patients. Facing an adult and pediatric physician shortage in the Buffalo region, Lifetime Health experienced an inability to fill provider gaps in time to continue to provide the level of care that their West Seneca patients need and deserve. By relocating the remaining West Seneca providers to the Amherst and Hamburg locations and consolidating practices and services, Lifetime Health can meet patient demand, improve access, and maintain quality of care. Lifetime’s other Buffalo area
practices include: · Amherst Health Center, 1185 Sweet Home Rd, Amherst · Hamburg Health Center, 151 Elmview Ave, Hamburg · Mosher Health Center, 899 Main St, Buffalo The plan for West Seneca outlined options for continuity of care, and was approved by the New York State Department of Health as required. Lifetime Health Medical Group’s focus is patient safety and quality care. While the decision to consolidate was a difficult one, it enables Lifetime Health to continue to fulfill their responsibility to patients of providing access to a medical team who can guide them and take care of them in their health needs.
