USPS honors one of its own in beautiful Veterans Day ceremony

By Rebecca Gunning LOCKPORT STAR EDITOR

Every year for the last seven years, the United States Postal Service honors one of its own military veterans for his or her courageousness and dedication, both in the service and to the post office. This year, with the sun shining on an uncharacteristically warm November morning at 1200 William St. in Buffalo, John Light, a veteran of the Vietnam War, was honored with the Frank E. Cius Award in front of a crowd of about 50 postal employees and veterans. Light, who has worked as a letter carrier for the post office for the last 34 years, was drafted to serve in Vietnam at the young age of 19. After serving three years, he was honorably discharged when a booby trap went off, injuring both his legs. “It was tough, especially being away from home for the first time,” Light said. “It made you grow up real quick.” An emotional Timothy McKibbin, Light’s boss, presented the award to him, giving a moving speech. “Only by the grace of God, and the dedicated surgeons and nurses who helped him through his wounds was he able to survive and return home in one piece,” said a tearful McKibbin, who also nominated Light for the award. “I was scared. The war

John Light, the man of honor, and his wife Mary. was already going on so you knew where you were going,” added Light, who was awarded a Purple Heart and Combat Award among others for his service. “It was just a matter of making it back hopefully.” After the nomination from McKibbin, the post office’s Veterans Committee, composed of Marty Siminski, William C. Maygar, Kenneth V. Brown Jr., Elena Franjoine, David M. Lisowski and Patrick Gunning, unanimously chose Light. “It was a no-brainer. Not only with the job he did over in Vietnam, but also the way he goes about his job here

at the post office,” Gunning said. “He does his job the right way, and is an extremely hard worker.” Also in attendance was Cius, whom the award was named for. Cius, also a veteran of the Vietnam War, was part of the crew chief in a helicopter that was shot down. He was captured and spent six years in a POW camp. Seven years after receiving the inaugural award, he is still in awe that the award is in his honor. “I was honored. I just couldn’t believe that the post office was going to create an award,” said Cius, who worked at the post of-

fice for 22 years. “I didn’t realize the full extent of it until after I got the award. My name was going to be handed off to someone else to receive this award.” Cius believes this year’s ceremony was the best so far, and thinks it’s important for people to be understand what’s going on in the world as well as recognize the job former and current military personnel are doing. “I think we should have more recognition for the troops. I think it’s good to know what’s going on,” he said. “If you don’t want to serve, you should be aware of what’s going on around you.”

Publishing company No Frills Buffalo releases two new books No Frills Buffalo publishing company, based in Buffalo, recently released two new books, a children’s book by author Dolores A. Esposito and a fiction novel by Kevin Richard White. “Benty,” written by Esposito and illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds, is a delightful tale of a bunny whose unusual ear makes a world of difference. Esposito is a former elementary school teacher and registered nurse. She wrote this story 50 years ago as a class assignment for her storytelling class at Framingham State College. After raising her family and retiring to West Palm Beach, she decided to finally publish her book. White’s “The Face of a Monster” is the story of two college-age girls — Browyn, an anarchist, and Elaine, a go-getter — who meet at a support group for those that have lost parents. Both of their fathers passed in different ways, but they strike up an abrasive yet charismatic friendship through their grief, anger and quirks. They both try to make sense of life after death, trying to become new people despite missing a vital piece of what made them alive in the first place. In this they learn what they’re truly

hiding from, a truth they cannot defeat and an acknowledgement that faith is more of a struggle than a feeling. Half memoir, half fiction, “The Face of a Monster” is an examination of friendship, family and the curse of memory. White is also the author of “Handprint on the Windshield,” a poetry collection, and “Steep Drop,” a novel. He resides in Pennsylvania. Books published by No Frills Buffalo can be purchased online at www. amazon.com, www.powells.com, www.barnesandnoble.com and www. nofrillsbuffalo.com. I’m serious. Go ahead and do it. What? You refuse? DO it anyway and see how it makes you feel. Painful wasn’t it? (Or were you just too chicken?) Well, guess what? Every day you run your furnace, you might as well take a $50 bill, light it with a match and watch it burn. Here’s why: That’s what your furnace is doing to you now. How do I know this? Simple. I know your furnace probably hasn’t been rejuvenated to factory fresh condition since the day it was installed. And every hour of every day it runs, it gets a little further out of adjustment, wasting slightly more gas for every unit of heat, costing more and more to operate. So, what can you do about this annoying situation? I’m glad you asked. Again, the answer is simple. Have a professional heating technician rejuvenate your furnace. To get the job done right, it will take about one and a half hours and $200 worth of labor and materials. The nice thing about a service like this is it usually

pays for itself several times over during the course of the winter... ...And if you call me for the service, not only will I have one of my top technicians do your rejuvenation for only $79, I will also guarantee your furnace won’t break down for the rest of this winter season. If it does, I WILL REFUND 100% OF YOUR MONEY. Why am I doing this for a price that’s below my total cost? Once again, it’s simple. I have just increased my capacity to handle an additional 125 new clients. And rather than lose money for the time it usually takes to attract that many clients, I thought I’d just pass that amount along to you in the form of savings and what I hope is an irresistible offer. There you have it. You can’t lose, no matter what happens. The only danger you have is waiting too long and missing out on the opportunity. Our Super-Tune Up can save you up to 33% off your utility bills! Call now for your appointment... 694-8524.

Sweet Home returns to Section VI throne, beats South Park By Tom Gallagher SPORTS EDITOR

The Sweet Home football team entered the season eager to prove that 2013 was an anomaly. The Panthers fell to Williamsville North in the Class A title game at Ralph Wilson Stadium a year ago. The loss ended an impressive reign of SectionVI supremacy exhibited by the Panthers, who had won a sectional championship in each of the six seasons prior. A return to normalcy was something they’d been striving for this year. “We’ve wanted to get back and be a sectional champ because we think our program is good enough to be that,” Sweet Home head coach John Faller said. They proved they were good enough on Thursday (Nov. 6). University at Buffalo-bound senior Brandon Smiley’s second touchdown reception of the contest — a 15-yard score on fourth down with 4:47 left — gave Sweet Home a lead it would never relinquish in the team’s 27-18 Class A championship victory over South Park at Ralph Wilson Stadium. The Panthers (9-1) earned their seventh sectional title in eight years with the win. “This puts us right back where we want to be,” Faller said. “We’ve worked hard to get to this point. And we got it done tonight.” They did it at the expense of an on-the-rise program in South Park, which became the first city school to play at Ralph Wilson Stadium since Buffalo schools joined Section VI in 2010.

The Sparks, an athletic team with a knack for the big play, threw everything they had at Sweet Home and even led for a chunk of the fourth quarter. But ultimately, the perennial power Panthers — and Smiley, in particular — proved to be too much to handle. Trailing 18-14 with less than five minutes to play, Sweet Home took a timeout facing fourth-and-10 from the South Park 15. The Panthers knew where they were going with the ball. QB Kevin Torrillo dropped back to pass and found Smiley to his left just inside the end zone for the go-ahead strike. “He played amazing,” senior running back Jordan Evert said of Smiley, who finished with six catches for 66 yards, four rushes for 31, 12 tackles and a forced fumble. “I knew if you give him the ball, he’d make plays. He’s a playmaker. That’s what he does. I’m proud to have him on this team.” “Kevin put the ball where it had to be. He knew [Smiley] could go up and get it and he did it,” Faller added. “Big-time players make big-time plays in big games.” The Panthers weren’t done making big plays just yet. On the ensuing kickoff return, Sweet Home’s Nyamekyi Daniels forced a South Park fumble that teammate Josh Cornelius jumped on to give the Panthers the ball in Sparks territory. Evert added a 23-yard touchdown rush for insurance moments later. For Sparks coach Tim Delaney, it was a disappointing end to a game his team wasn’t just in, but ahead during. That disappointment was punctuated by the fact that, according to Delaney, the officials picked up a flag that would have negated Smiley’s second touchdown, the go-ahead score. “There was a player offsides.

JEFFREY T. BARNES

Brandon Smiley had six catches for 66 yards and two touchdowns in Sweet Home’s Class A finals victory over South Park at The Ralph. They threw a flag,” Delaney said. “They threw a flag, picked it up. Smiley made a great play; he’s one of the best football players I’ve coached against. But for it to come down to that is just uncalled for.” Still, it was another successful season for Delaney’s Sparks (8-2). They won the Class A South division title for the second consecutive year and posted a spotless record in league play.

Their only other loss came in a Week Two defeat to St. Francis. “I’m proud of our kids,” Delaney said. “I’m proud of the way they represent our program. We really played a good game tonight and I couldn’t ask for our guys to play much better.” South Park opened the scoring late in the first quarter when Tyree Brown found receiver Daryl Moore, whose one-handed touchdown grab

went for 23 yards with 3:11 left in the opening frame. It didn’t take Sweet Home long to answer. Torrillo’s throw to a wide-open Jordan Heine, who ran a wheel route, resulted in a 35-yard touchdown strike just over two minutes later. A successful PAT gave the Panthers a 7-6 lead. Torrillo finshed 17 for 28 for 168 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

Smiley forced a South Park fumble that was recovered by Matt Ortiz on the Sparks’ next possession and added his first touchdown — a spectacular 23-yard reception — just a few plays later to push the Panther lead to 14-6. After a Sweet Home drive stalled, South Park marched down the field and found the end zone when Brown heaved a 35-yard bomb to Danny Gerace for a score that pulled the Sparks to within 14-12. Sweet Home was within 2 yards of pushing its lead to 2012 early in the second half, but two straight plays of negative yards and a false start penalty by the Panthers backed them up to the Sparks’ 10. Torillo’s pass on third down was picked off by Mike McDonald, who returned it to the 39. The Sparks took the lead a few plays later when Brown and Moore connected for the second time of the night and fourth of the last two games. The Sparks missed the conversion attempt after the 17-yard scoring play and held an 18-14 lead late in the third. Sparks’ receiver/defensive backAntonio Leonard added an interception on Sweet Home’s next possession, but the South Park couldn’t turn it into points. That’s when Smiley and the Panthers took over. Sweet Home took on Section V champion Irondequoit (6-3) on Friday, Nov. 14. Results weren’t available at press time. Before the game, Faller said he’s excited for his seniors to move onto regionals. “It’s another title, but we’re more concerned with these seniors getting back here and getting a chance to go out with a sectional championship and now move on to the third part of the season,” Faller said. “We’ll see how far this class can take themselves.”

CCA’s Noelle continues prolific pace Will. South wins section, falls to Greece-Athena By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER

Christian Central Academy is an academic institution that doesn’t get much publicity for its success in high school sports. Often buried behind the bigger Monsignor Martin programs in Western New York like Nardin and Nichols, the Crusaders are a smaller program that only recently joined the MMAA. That doesn’t mean that the Crusaders haven’t had success, though. Since joining the league four years ago, the girls soccer team has reached postseason play three times and reached the MMAAchampionship game twice. At the heart of the Crusaders’ achievements is junior forward Tahelah Noelle. Noelle finished this past season with 56 goals and has scored 128 in her threeyear career — the highest goal total in school history. “Noelle has excellent ball skills and a real good scoring touch,” coach Joe Karnath

said. “She usually gets a lot of attention from opposing ball clubs and is almost always double- and triple-teamed in every game she plays. She’s also helped to change the dynamic of our team.” Noelle, however, is more than just a prolific goal scorer for the Crusaders, according to Karnath. She also has the respect of her teammates and learned to become a team player by growing up in an environment that encouraged unselfishness. “Tahelah’s a humble person and is an unselfish teammate,” Karnath said. “She comes from an athletic family from Haiti — her older sister played soccer as well and her brother also participated in athletics too — and she’s very grounded. Noelle attributed her leadership style to watching her siblings play soccer and taking mental notes on their attributes. “Soccer’s one of those sports that you need to have good communication for. If you don’t communicate well, your team won’t do well either,” Noelle said. “I would watch my

brother and sister, and when I saw them play well and lead through hard work, it kind of made me want to do the same.” One of the areas that Noelle has improved at over the years was her physicality and her toughness. It was a necessity to do so, said Karnath, because of her size. “Noelle’s kind of a smaller player, so she sometimes gets pushed around a little bit out there by bigger players,” Karnath said. “I’ve told her that the only way to stop getting pushed around was to stand up for yourself and to not expect the referees to protect you by making calls against other teams. She’s taken that to heart.” That work ethic and leadership helped Noelle to be named a team captain as a junior — an honor rarely given out by Karnath. “I usually reserve captaincy titles for seniors, but since she had such a good rapport with her fellow seniors and worked so hard, she deserved that title,” Karnath said. “I have no doubt that she’ll continue to do well in

that role next year too.” When it comes to aspirations for her senior year, Karnath said that Noelle had the potential to score 70 goals as long as she could stay healthy, and if the players around her continue to grow and mature, the sky is the limit for the Crusaders. “That’s an attainable goal. Team success-wise, coaches can only do so much. If our players can keep playing as a unit and help take some of the burden off of Noelle, then I think we can do some damage next year.” Noelle said if she and her teammates work hard and enjoy every day to its fullest, then the Crusaders should have success in 2015. “As long as we work hard and have fun, good things are going to happen,” Noelle said. “I’ve always said that if you don’t enjoy playing sports, then why participate in them? I think as long as I can show our younger players next year that in order to win, you’ve got to be able to do both of those things and if you do, everything else will fall into place.”

Flames conquer Sweet Home demons, win Class A title By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER

Revenge has never tasted so sweet for the Williamsville East Flames. In downing crosstown rival Sweet Home in straight sets to win the Section VI Class A championship Nov. 5 at Lockport High School, the Flames (18-1) exorcized some demons from years past. Gone were the occasions in which the Panthers would reign supreme over the Flames — at least for one day,

anyways. “After losing to Sweet Home in the sectional finals last year, I think that really drove our girls to want to go out and dominate every time we stepped on the floor,” Flames coach Scott Wright said. “We’ve worked so hard for this. We’ve never won a sectional championship in volleyball, and now we’ve accomplished that goal. It’s an amazing feeling.” In the first set between the two teams, the Flames and Panthers traded scores early before the Flames pulled away

and won 25-19. Both teams were within a few points of each other for the first half of the set until the Flames eventually set themselves apart. The Flames led the set by seven points three different times before ultimately winning by six. The second set saw the Panthers take an early four-point lead, but the Flames fought back and tied the score at eight apiece. The two teams then traded punches for the rest of the set, with neither side taking a commanding lead until

the Flames put themselves up 22-19. With the Flames on the verge of winning the second set, the Panthers refused to quit by scoring three straight points. The nail-biting set was then won by the Flames 25-22. Wright said that the close score was due to the Flames not performing up to their own standards and by getting away from their strengths. “In the second set, I think we just got away from some of the things that we normally are very good at,” Wright

said. “We were having some trouble with (Sweet Home’s) two middle blockers, and so we tried to rotate a little more on them and we weren’t getting there. We eventually figured it out though, and we got on our game and let our defense carry the day.” During the third and deciding set, the Flames raced out to an early 4-0 lead and never looked back. The Panthers gradually started to score points, but they came in vain as they found themselves in deficits of double digits and were eliminated by a

final of 25-11. Carly Shifflet and Alexis Novak each paced the Flames in kills with 18 apiece. “They were just better than us tonight, plain and simple,” Panthers coach Breean Martin said. “My hat’s off to them. We got outplayed in the first and third sets and the second one could have gone either way. We’re very proud of the season we had, but it just didn’t end the way that we wanted it to end.” The Flames fell to PittsfordSutherland in the Far West Regionals Nov. 8.
