Daemen pays tribute to the Veterans With nearly 100 U.S. flags lining the front campus walkway, Veterans Day at Daemen College was filled with gratitude and tribute to students and Western New Yorkers who have served in the U.S. armed forces. Almost 20 veterans and family members were recognized at an appreciation breakfast hosted by the college’s Center for Veterans and Veteran Family Services. In keeping with the military coin giving tradition as an expression of thanks to current and past service members, veterans at the event were each presented a specially created Daemen coin bearing the college’s logo. Among those attending the breakfast were Daemen President Gary A. Olson, State Senator Michael Ranzenhofer and State Assemblyman Raymond Walter. “The Daemen community extends its deepest gratitude to all those who have bravely served in the military and honor the many sacrifices veterans have made for our country,” said Olson. “As a nationally designated

Elementary schools display photos Buffalo area elementary students displayed photographs that show their creative views of the community and environment at a Nov. 11 exhibit that culminated a collaborative project with Daemen College. Images from the Seneca Babcock Children’s Photo Show were available for purchase with proceeds benefiting the Seneca Babcock After School Program. During the five-week project, Daemen art education students worked with a dozen children in the after school program and instructed them on the basics of camera use. The young participants were then introduced to works by Jay Masiel, an acclaimed photographer best known for his unique perspective on capturing the environment and everyday life. “Jay Masiel wants people to see ordinary things in extraordinary ways through his images so we assisted the youngsters with using that focus when taking purposeful photographs of their surrounding environment and community,” said Dr. Mary Wolf, Daemen art education director, who oversaw the project.

Dunkin’ Donuts donates $25,000 to support relief efforts in WNY Dunkin’ Donuts today announced a $25,000 donation to the American Red Cross to support disaster relief efforts and those who have been impacted by disasters including the recent snowstorm in Western New York. “As those affected continue to feel the impact of the recent snowstorm, our goal is that the company’s donation to the American Red Cross will help provide assistance to the people who have been displaced by the storm,” said Tammy Monks, senior field marketing manager for Dunkin’ Donuts. A reminder to buy and renew local

Erie County Clerk Chris Jacobs is reminding residents to “Renew Local” on Small Business Saturday, a day dedicated to supporting area businesses across the country the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Jacobs is making it easy for shoppers to “Renew Local” while out bargain-hunting by having green “Renew Local” mailboxes placed outside the Erie County Auto Bureaus located in the Northtown Plaza, Eastern Hills Mall and Urbandale Plaza shopping centers. “When customers visit these locations, they are supporting local businesses,” Jacobs said. “I hope that residents who are buying local also consider renewing their vehicle registrations locally by picking up our signature green envelopes.” Taxpayers should know that by not renewing their vehicle registration directly with the Erie County Clerk’s Office, residents lose 12.7 percent per renewal, which totals over $1.5 million annually. This revenue is critical to the county’s general fund to support vital programs and services important to the com-

munity. Promoting awareness of domestic violence

The Zonta Club of Kenmore will be promoting awareness of domestic violence through participation in the 16 days of activism thorough Dec. 10. A little over a year ago Zonta International took up this initiative, but this is the first year that Zonta of Kenmore has participated. Marking an important milestone in a Buffalo Billion project targeting Western New York’s emerging film and television post-production industry, a newly completed nearly $2 million stateof-the-art visual effects facility will be officially unveiled by Daemen College at a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for Dec. 5. The celebration will take place at 10 a.m. in the Daemen International Center for Excellence in Animation located in the Tri Main Center at 2495 Main St. in Buffalo. Daemen President Gary A. Olson, members of the Daemen community and dignitaries are expected to be in attendance. An open house for the community is also planned from 2 to 4 p.m. on Dec. 6. The recently finished high-tech facility is the result of a year-long project launched with the formation of a college-business partnership between Daemen and Empire Visual Effects, a new post-production and animation company. The venture was funded by a $4.5 million Buffalo Billion grant, including $1.9 million to Daemen that was instrumental in outfitting the facility with the advanced equipment and spaces rel-

Auburn was a pretty hard pill to swallow. It was a game that really could have gone either way. They got a couple of bounces that went in their favor and put us down 2-1, and we couldn’t answer. Talking to a lot of our guys this offseason, that loss has been sitting in their memory banks and they don’t want to repeat that.” To do so, the Flames will have to replace their two leading scorers from last season, forwards Tyler Trubish and Jason Cohen. Torrillo is counting on senior forwards Dylan Cicero and Matt Steffan to not just pick up the slack in the goal-scoring department,

but also defensively. Their play in their own zone should not only make themselves better all-around hockey players, but it would also make the life of goaltender Max Battistoni, who posted an impressive goals-against average of 1.88 and four shutouts last year, even easier. “ We ’ r e a t e a m t h a t preaches defense first,” Torrillo said. “We have a simple motto: ‘If they don’t score, we can’t lose.’ We really try to take care of our own zone, and if we do that, everything else will fall into place for us.”

AMHERST TIGERS Tigers key in on defensive play, will lean on strong core of returners By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER

Coming off of a season in which they went 2-16 under then-new head coach James Ryan, the Amherst Tigers feel as if they have a lot of room to improve in 2014-15. The biggest area of Amherst’s game that needs improvement this season is their defensive play. The Tigers didn’t perform up to Ryan’s standards in their own zone, and Ryan said if his team can cut

down on their amount of goals allowed, the Tigers will be able to compete for a playoff spot. “We flat-out need to keep the puck out of our net this year and get better defensively,” Ryan said. “We gave up way too many goals last year, but I think if our guys work hard every day and stay committed to our system, we can get a lot better.” Losing their leader, Bryan Smith, to graduation will be a blow to their roster, but Amherst plans to make up for his

departure by relying on a committee of talented players. Seniors Noah Basehart, Pete Sinagra, Rex Keoppen and Ben Battaglia will be counted on to provide leadership, while juniors Steve Vukelic and Ben Lackner and sophomores Will Grisko and Jeff Tyler will also play big roles on the ice. Basehart’s presence, in particular, should help the Tigers tremendously. The defenseman missed the previous campaign with a broken leg and his return to bolster the team’s blue

line should be a godsend for Ryan’s squad. “Basehart’s one of our best players and he should help us out, no question about it,” Ryan said. “With that being said though, hockey’s still a team game. The biggest strength of our team is our character. Our kids possess a strong work ethic, they’re coachable and they have good discipline. As long as our group continues to play a team game, the wins will come.”

hockey. The loss of those three seniors, plus numerous other upperclassmen, will leave the Katz with a young squad. But head coach Nicola Adimey expressed confidence that the players that she currently has at her disposal will be able to get the job done. “Those three players in particular – Mallon, Koester and Grisko – are going to be sorely missed by us and will be some pretty big shoes to fill,” Adimey said. “But we do have some players in particular, like goaltender Maddie Estin, who

will be more than up to the challenge to replace some of their leadership.” Another problem that the team has been faced with is a short bench. Just 11 skaters will be on the Katz’ roster in 2014-15, and Adimey admitted that it will play a factor in the program’s season. “We’re going to have a very small team this year, with the lack of skaters on our roster,” Adimey said. “They’re going to get a lot of ice time this year, for sure, but I think they’ll be ready to step up and with hard work, we’ll continue to win games.”

T h e Wi l l i a m s v i l l e girls’ federation team is brimming with optimism entering the 2014-15 campaign. Even though the team lost South defenseman Rachel Grampp, a first team All-WNY selection now at Elmira College and East goalie Theresa Moesky, a second team All-WNY at UB, an

abundance of talented players has kept the team’s chances of winning in good shape. Senior center Jordan Roetzer, senior winger Sarah Scolnick and junior winger Lexi Skibitsky (all from East) make up Williamsville’s top line. The line has been the team’s go-to offensive force for two years running, and a third year together should provide scoring punch on a nightly basis.

“They’ve played together for a while now and I think they’re one of the best line combinations in our league,” Hopkins said. “They have great chemistry together and a lot of speed. That’s a pretty potent mixture.” South senior defenseman Lily Markley will be counted on for leadership on the team’s back end and freshman Jenna Lekompski is Williamsville’s starter in net. Although Lekompski

lacks experience at the high school level, she has given Hopkins confidence that she can be leaned on as a starter. “Goaltending is so important, because you need that stopper back there who can bail you out and keep you in close games till the end,” Hopkins said. “Even though Lekompski hasn’t played at the Federation level, I know what she’s capable of doing because she’s very talented.”
