Daemen awarded highest honor
Daemen College has for the seventh consecutive year been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition an institution can receive for its commitment to community, service learning and civic engagement. Daemen is one only five institutions in Western New York and among 35 colleges and universities in New York State to receive this national designation in the 2014 general community service category, which is awarded by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). “This prestigious national distinction is a great tribute to our students’ exceptional dedication and hard work to a range of community service activities that have a positive, meaningful impact in our local, regional and international communities,” said Daemen President Gary A. Olson. “We are immensely honored to be recognized for all of the college’s outstanding civic engagement efforts.” In 2013-14, nearly 500 Daemen students engaged in more than 25,000 total
hours in service-learning and community service initiatives. Over the past decade, Daemen has established 35 local and global service learning partnerships. Launched in 2006, the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll recognizes higher education institutions that support exemplary
community service programs and raise the visibility of effective practices in campuscommunity partnerships. CNCS oversees the award in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, American Council on Education, Campus Compact, and the Interfaith Youth Core.

Grant to support early child care programs Child Care Resource Network (CCRN) will become a new Cavity Free Kids hub and will train and support early child care programs in successfully using CHOMPERS: Cavity Free Kids curriculum to help young children impacted by poverty develop lifelong healthy dental habits and better oral health. The grant for $20,000 was given in August and will provide training and services to child care programs through January 2016. Through the CHOMPERS program, CCRN will work with family and group family early child care programs in the high-poverty zip codes of Buffalo. Children birth through 5 years old will be the focus of outreach and education. When speaking about the implementation of the grant, CCRN CEO Lynn Pullano said, “More than 65 percent of young children in Buffalo live in poverty. They are often at risk for dental problems that can interfere with eating, speaking and learning—making it even more difficult for them to succeed in school and later in life. We’re grateful that the foundation recognizes how essential early dental health is to long-term well-being.” Since 1987, Child Care Resource Network has advocated for quality child care and education for all children. Marching On: The 115th installment of the Army/Navy game By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR
Baltimore, Maryland— It has been voted as the No. 1 rivalry in the United States. Presidents have attended. Secretary of states, generals. Anyone who is anyone has attended this game. Even in 1963 when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated, the game went on weeks later as a form of healing. It is on the bucket list of many who love college football; who love the pageantry of an event that goes much further than the game on the field. When people speak of the Army/Navy game, they usually say, ‘this is how the game used to be played, should be played.’ These teams aren’t playing for the national title anymore. They don’t have players fighting for the Heisman Trophy, either. They both still implement the triple-option, just a little different looking than in years past. But there is a purity to the game. These young men on the field play for the love of the game, for each other. With a five-year commitment, there aren’t many players being drafted by the National Football League. These young men have a different purpose after graduation. They will serve and protect this country from the threat of whatever is going on. While they battle on the field, at the end of the game they become brothers in arms. “It means a lot to me. We get the opportunity to go out and represent a great profession like the Army and we get to compete against another academy knowing that everybody is going to be watching the game,” explained Army fullback Larry Dixon. “This Navy team is really good. They play really well
PHOTO COURTESY OF THE UNITED STATES MILITARY ACADEMY
The Army Cadets root on their team during the 115th playing of the Army/Navy game. Navy won the contest, 17-10. together and with a class unlike any other team. It’s an honor to step out on the field with these guys and play this game that means so much to this country.” It’s unique and different. But, everything about this game is unique. What other game has 4,000 Midshipmen and 4,000 Cadets march on the field in a pre-game ceremony? Apache helicopters flying over during the national anthem. The ‘exchange’ of prisoners before the opening coin toss. It all reads American. “When I grew up, I didn’t start playing football until my junior year of high
school, but I was always a football fan,” explained Army’s Joe Drummond, after Army’s 17-10 loss to Navy — its 13th-straight loss in the rivalry. “Just all the history and the circumstances of ArmyNavy is something that goes back a century and the teams coming together and not only representing their institutions, but also the military as a whole. That’s something that I’ve always had an interest with and I’d love to have the opportunity to do that next week.” Maybe that’s why it’s called America’s Game. America stops and watches this game. It is the only
college football game being played on the second Saturday of December each year. It’s an American pastime, tradition. People can tell you where they have been during the playing of the game. For one day, it splits families apart. But just like the battle on the field, families become one right after. “I knew the program existed but I didn’t follow it too much,” stated Dixon, on what it was like growing up in a Navy house. “I was more of a basketball player, so it wasn’t until high school that I started getting into football. And at that point
everybody around knew what the Army-Navy game was, so it was definitely something that we always tuned into at the end of the year.” As for the game, Navy quarterback Keenan Reynolds ran for 100 yards and a touchdown and threw for another as the Midshipmen scored 17 unanswered point to defeat Army, 17-10, in the 115th installment of the Army/ Navy game. The game was played in front of a sold-out crowd of 70,935 at M&T Bank in Baltimore. The win was the 13th in a row for the Midshipmen. Navy now leads the series 59-49-7.
“It was awesome,” stated Navy defensive end Paul Quessenberry, about another win over Army. “If you watch to the end, I ran into the Secretary of the Navy.” The win also makes Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo the winningest coach (56-35) in Navy history. He broke a tie with George Welsh for most wins at Navy. He also became the first to win his first seven games against Army (4-8). “It’s not as if you carry points over from one year to the next,” Niumatalolo said. “It is a heck of a run, and you have to give credit to a lot of players and coaches.”

Local sports Sabres pay visit to Women’s and Children’s Hospital By Dave Ricci
SPORTS REPORTER
COURTESY OF THE BUFFALO SABRES
Piper Gabel, 3, dances with Sabretooth during the Sabres’ visit to Women’s and Children’s Hospital on Dec. 9.
All 3-year-old Piper Gabel really wanted to do was dance with her pal Sabretooth. Gabel was one of countless children and families who had a day to remember when the Buffalo Sabres paid a visit to Women’s and Children’s Hospital on Dec.9. “She was ecstatic. That was the highlight of her month, for sure, ” Matt Gabel said as watched his youngest daughter dance with the beloved Sabre mascot. “She was obsessed with him. I don’t know who was inside that Sabretooth costume, but he was very entertaining for her.” Sabretooth and the rest of the Buffalo Sabres, dressed in their white game jerseys and Santa Clause hats,
spent some very special and precious hours getting to know some of their youngest and toughest fans who are part of the Stone’s Buddies program. Stone’s Buddies provides a network of resources, support and friendship for children who are frequent visitors to Women’s and Children’s Hospital. The children in Stone’s Buddies deal with life-threatening illnesses or have daily special needs. Interacting with patients, the Sabres took photos, did holiday-themed arts and crafts and cookie decorating. They talked hockey and holidays with kids and their families as they signed autographs and helped the kids forget the daily routine of hospital life. “It’s great to go with the team and see all the kids,” said Buffalo Sabres defenseman Nikita Zadorov.
“It’s hard to see how they are battling through that....I think it’s great to see the smiles on their faces and give them some presents.” Matt Gabel, who attended the party with his wife Tara and their other three young daughters, Macy, Grace and Ashlyn and his parents, said he really didn’t think his kids grasped exactly who the players were. But the Sabres were a hit because all of the kids could sense that the players were just nice people wanting to spend time with them. “The guys are really just down to Earth. It’s not about them being professional athletes, I mean that’s huge for some of the kids, they signed a lot of autographs,” said Gabel. “But you could tell they were sincere about their interactions with the children.” Gabel added that he and
other parents were touched by how many of the players’ wives and girlfriends were at the party and were just as involved with the activities to help make the day more enjoyable for the kids. From the Sabres perspective, knowing they have the ability to make fans smile and forget their troubles, even for a just a little while, is a touching experience for them. “It humbles you as a person,” said Patrick Kaleta. A big kid himself, Zadorov was an instant favorite for Piper Gabel’s twin sisters Grace and Ashlyn, who wouldn’t let Nikita out of their sights. Echoing the thoughts of all of the parents, Matt Gabel said this wasn’t just a PR trip. “You didn’t feel like it was an obligation at all,” said Gabel. “They genuinely wanted to give back.”
Christmas ‘wish list’ not limited to children
be the oldest kid in line. So in the spirit of the season, I’m COLUMNIST taking the tradition back and have made a sports-related At this time of year, in list of things I’d tell Santa I’d a variety of locations from want this Christmas: First, I’d like to see one coast to coast, kids are lining of our local college basketup to have a chat with Santa Claus and relay what’s on ball teams pull off an upset of a nationally-renowned their Christmas wish list. But why limit it to the kids? program. UB almost did it I’ve long have been alarmed against top-ranked Kentucky at the number of school-age a few weeks ago and will kids who no longer visit have another kick at a highlywith Santa, thinking they’re regarded opponent when they too cool to be part of a time- travel to Wisconsin for a Dec. honored tradition. I was 28 game. St. Bonaventure personally horrified years ago took Pitt down to the wire when my own son, perhaps this past Saturday, nearly around age seven, seemed to ending the Panthers’25-game home winning streak against By Mike Haim
non-conference opponents. There are a wealth of stories about some upstart program recording a significant victory against a powerhouse, so why can’t we enjoy that kind of moment for a change? Next, I’d like to have some sort of personal epiphany which leads me to either love or loathe UB’s mission to become identified as “New York.” I’m still ambivalent about the idea, since I think the state needs a true representative on the national athletic stages but I also don’t want to see the university’s civic identity get compromised. I tend to think that most universities with a
state moniker are located in smaller communities (think Michigan and Ann Arbor, Missouri and Columbia, Kentucky and Lexington, etc.), so it doesn’t make sense for Buffalo to make itself seem smaller. But the idea of having New York City-based alumni become a force in fund-raising and awareness is irresistible. At some point I’d like there to be an overwhelming reason to commit to an opinion either way. Next, I’d like to see fewer kids get saddled with terminal illnesses. While this doesn’t appear to be a sports-related wish, it becomes one when I see what seems to be a
constant parade of teams and individual stars offering wonderful, heartwarming experiences to children who have been dealt a devastating prognosis. Bad news is a fact of life, and organizations such as “Make a Wish” have tried to make tragic journeys more palatable, but I’d like to see a day when this sort of outreach isn’t necessary. Next, as someone who’s been involved in “behind the scenes” aspects of sports for over 30 years, I’d like to reflect more often on how lucky I’ve been to be part of the local sports scene. There are times when I’ll walk into a venue or leave an event and
get that chill down my spine and remind myself about how many other people would love to be in my shoes. But those feelings always seem to pale in comparison to how I felt when I was a kid, getting my formative tastes of sporting events and feeling like nothing in the world mattered like that day’s game. Age may somewhat dull the senses, but I’d love to recapture the innocence of my youth and suspend worry about “real world” issues. It’s kind of like the holiday season itself: may we all tap into the wonder of it like we’re kids again. www.twitter.com/mikehaim
