Dr. Michael Brogan receives award
In recognition of his enduring support for Daemen College, Dr. Michael Brogan, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, was presented a Distinguished Honoree Award at the 2014 National Philanthropy Day luncheon held Nov. 12. Brogan was among other award winners recognized at the Western New York Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals event to celebrate donors, volunteers, foundations, leaders, corporations, and others engaged in philanthropy in the local community. “We nominated Dr. Brogan for this award because he is the epitome of the spirit of Daemen
Dr. Michael Brogan College,” said Dr. Richanne C. Mankey, vice president for institutional advancement. “A powerful example of his dedication followed the tragic loss of his grandson, which led to the creation of the Paiten J. MeyersBrogan Scholarship to
benefit students with physical disabilities. His compassion is truly an inspiration to us all.” During his nearly 30year tenure at Daemen, Brogan has been instrumental in securing multiple grants and has generously supported the college in various ways. His affiliation with Daemen started as a student, having received a bachelor’s degree in physical therapy and later returned to the college to earn a doctor of physical therapy. He also holds a doctorate in educational administration and a master’s degree in health science education and evaluation, both from the University at Buffalo. Since 1985, Brogan has served in various
academic capacities, including as dean of the college’s Health and Human Services Division, chair of the Physical Therapy Department and academic coordinator of clinical education. In addition, he’s an associate professor of physical therapy, a program he has taught in for 25 years. A national expert and certified wound care specialist, Brogan was recently selected for the prestigious Fulbright Specialist Program, which connects U.S. scholars and professionals with counterparts at overseas institutions. He resides in South Buffalo.
BNHV to open exciting new Prohibition exhibit
An exciting new exhibit — Vice and Virtue: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition — is scheduled to open on April 24, 2015, at Buffalo Niagara Heritage Village in Amherst. Vice and Virtue: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition will explore how the 18th Amendment sought to bring on an age of temperance and virtue but instead resulted in an increase of excess, indulgence and vice as Americans began to test the limits of one of the most unpopular pieces of legislature in American history. Exhibit sponsors for Vice and Virtue: The Rise and Fall of Prohibition are being sought, as well as donations of items related to the Prohibition era to be put on display to supplement existing
exhibition items. These items would be considered on loan and would be on display for the three-year duration of the exhibit. In particular, BNHV is interested in photos, correspondence, permits or other documents related to Prohibition, items used to smuggle alcohol or evade authorities (hollowed canes, hip flasks, false books), newspaper articles, home distillery items, bottles, kegs, barrels and oral histories from members of the community. The deadline for participating as a sponsor or for donating items is Feb. 20, 2015. If you have any questions regarding sponsorship of this exhibit or donating artifacts or oral histories, email kshypski@bnhv.org or call 689-1440, ext. 7720.
New Non-Surgical Protocol For Neuropathy What is Neuropathy? Neuropathy is a collection of disorders that occurs when nerves of the peripheral nervous system are damaged. The condition is generally referred to as peripheral neuropathy. In the United States, over 20 million people suffer from peripheral neuropathy. Neuropathy can be brought on by a number of different causes including diabetes, back problems, and certain drugs. Damaged nerves send incorrect signals to the brain causing scattered messages resulting in numbness, burning, tingling, and sharp pain sensations that are usually felt in the feet, legs, hands or arms. Symptoms associated with the motor portion of the nerve may also include muscle weakness, cramping and spasms as well as a lack of coordination and poor balance.
Traditional Treatments:
Over the years, neuropathy treatments in general have had poor results at best. Many medications are used that have significant side effects and poor outcomes. Only recently have we had a promising breakthrough to help reduce the symptoms of neuropathy with lasting results.
Are you Experiencing Pins & Needles? Numbness and Tingling? Pain or Burning in your Feet or Hands? New Non-Surgical Protocol for Neuropathy: A new development in Class IV laser technology called Deep Tissue Laser Therapy has been shown to improve the function of the blood vessels that feed the nerves by sending radiant infrared energy deep into the walls of the blood vessels and tissues that surround the injured nerves. This improves the elasticity and function of the blood vessels. As the blood vessels become healthier, the nerves begin to thrive. Additionally, Electroanalgesic Treatment is used to reduce the ability of the affected nerves to transmit pain signals and promote healing by means of the depolarization effects on the nerve cells. This computer-assisted treatment offers exemplary patient success in the treatment of PAIN, without piercing the skin. Moreover, therapies including Whole Body Vibration and Hydromassage are designed to improve circulation, strength and balance.
Attend a FREE SEMINAR where you will learn all about these new technologies - Seating is limited so register NOW - Call (716) 213-6824

over the past seven years through the “Give a Pint, Get a Pound” campaign, which has helped increase blood donations by providing a coupon for a free pound of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee to all presenting donors at Red Cross blood drives during the month of January. The campaign has achieved great success during the past seven years as Dunkin’ Donuts has provided more than 520,000 pounds of coffee to presenting donors, and if one donation may help save up to three lives, Dunkin Donuts has potentially helped more than 1.5 million patients. Locally, approximately 40,000 pints of blood have been collected in Buffalo during the month of January since the inception of the program in 2008. “The Red Cross is grate-

ECC unveils Fallen Heroes Memorial Park In honor of the week of Veterans Day, Erie Community College gathered with local veterans, police and fire departments, and community members to proudly unveil its first responder-focused Fallen Heroes Memorial Park— dedicated to students who’ve lost their lives in the line of police, fire or military duty— on Thursday, November 13 outside ECC’s North Campus Law Enforcement Training Academy. “This park stands as a tribute to those ECC alums that made the ultimate sacrifice,” said ECC President Jack Quinn. “It will now be a place for others to remember and honor to their sacrifice for decades to come.” The park—aided by donations from such local Western New York companies as Campobello Construction, Lakeside Sod, Love Joy Metals, Inc. and Occhino Paving; design and construction work from the college’s Architecture Technology, Construction Technology and Visual Communications students; and completion by ECC’s Maintenance and Grounds Department—features trees and flowered latticework; steel silhouettes of veterans, police officers and firefighters; six towering flag poles flying the American flag and the flags of the five branches of the Armed Services; a 500-pound memorial stone, donated by ECC’s 117th Police Basic class and relocated from a nearby police recruit assembly area; and park

The Monsignor Martin girls hockey team has seen plenty of success on the ice and many of the big names are back. But past success doesn’t guarantee future playing time. With a deep roster, MMAA players know they have to earn each minute and they’re eager to do so. “I have a group of kids that work hard,” coach Linda Mroz said “Nobody feels entitled to PT. Doesn’t matter if you’re a senior or a freshman, every game and every practice is a tryout, no lineup is set.” Monsignor Martin has a ton of returning talent and leadership. Billies puck banking on experience, maturity to guide them to better year By Tony Fiorello SPORTS REPORTER
The Williamsville South Billies didn’t have much success on the ice last season, but that won’t put a damper on the team’s hopes heading into the 2014-15 campaign. That is due to the team having gained a lot of experience over the last few years and relying on said experience to grow and
mature on the ice. The Billies only lost two seniors to graduation – leading scorer Adam Herr and Jacob Fix – and with most of the roster back intact, the Billies’ coaches expect that team chemistry will improve this year. “We’ve got a bit of a younger squad and not much size this year, but we shouldn’t use that as an excuse,” assistant coach Scott Horton said. “We’re going to revert to having
more of a travel hockey mentality, but that should be a fun way to go through the season and hopefully it will translate into more wins.” The Billies will be relying on players such as senior defensemen Andrew Laudico and Luke Rehbaum and senior forwards Dan Brodzik and Mason Cool, to provide most of the team’s production offensively and defensively. In goal

MMA’s roster consist of nine players from Mount Mercy, eight from Sacred Heat, two from Nardin and one apiece from Mount St. Mary and Niagara Catholic. But, while they may compete in other venues, they’re friends when they step on the ice. “Mount St. Mary and Sacred Heart have a huge rivalry,” Mroz said “But I tell the girls, you’re no longer Mount and you are no longer Sacred Heart, you’re Monsignor Martin. There are no issues. They’re not playing for Caz, not playing for the Regals, not playing for the Stars, or Sacred Heart or Mount or Nardin. We’re all playing together for Monsignor Martin and the girls have been great about it.”
will be a host of players vying for playing time – including Adam Tucker, Caleb Hannon, Michael Woods, Sean Brown and Cam Carney. “We have a lot of depth at goaltender,” Horton said. “No one sticks out more than the other, so any one of them could win games for us on any given night. We’ve got a lot of confidence that they can do the job for us and do it well.”
COACH’S OUTLOOK: “Last year we gave up a lot of goals.
