Manna enjoying her time at West Point Will-South grad becomes member of the Long Gray Line By Matthew Ondesko MANAGING EDITOR
There are times you just forget. You forget they are only kids. Kids that have made a life changing decision. They look invincible in their dress uniforms. They look like they can change the world. That nothing can hurt them. But, remember, they are just like you and I. The only difference is they are going to be serving our country in just a couple of years, helping to protect the freedom that many of us enjoy. But, at the end of the day, they are college students. “We get personified as these invincible, tough human beings,” stated West Point Firstie Maria Manna. “But, none of us are like that. We all love being ourselves and doing things like shopping and playing sports. What normal people like to do.” For Williamsville South High School graduate Maria Manna she grew up not knowing much about the military life. She didn’t come from a military family. So, when the United States Military Academy at West Point came to St. Gregory the Great one day she was hooked. Maybe it was the awe of the dress gray uniforms the Cadets were wearing that day. Maybe it was the sense
Pictured from the United States Military Academy West Point, left to right, are: Devin Long (Georgia), Maria Manna (Williamsville), Andrew Mohr (Williamsville). of pride she had watching them sing for everybody. Whatever the case was, Manna knew she wanted to follow the path of the military. She wanted to get an Ivy League education, while serving her country in the process. “West Point Catholic Choir came to my church [St. Gregory the Great] when I was in sixth grade.
Before that I had never heard of West Point,” explained Manna. “When they came they looked very impressive in their uniforms and I was able to talk with them afterward. I just had that vision of being a Cadet. With my personality, I was a natural fit.” But, like most young men and women who attend one of the three acad-
emies, the reality of academy life hits you straight in the face. Becoming a member of the prestigious Long Gray Line isn’t easy. It isn’t handed to you on a silver platter. You need to work for it. You need to be committed to the cause. Committed to the military lifestyle and training, while still going to class and participat-
ing in other activities, like sports and Glee Club. “We take certain classes at West Point, like survival swimming,” stated Manna. “This is where you learn to swim with your gear. It is very difficult being 130-pounds and carrying 45-pounds of gear in the water, while trying not to drown. The nickname for the class is Cow [Junior
year] drowning. The standards in this class are the same for men and women.” Manna is a singer. She sings at West Point and has been able to travel around the United States to perform. Not many people can say they have been able to perform in front of thousands of people at Yankee Stadium, but she can. “Being in Glee Club freshman year I was able to leave almost every weekend,” said Manna. I traveled to Kentucky and was able to sing at some military balls. Members of the club were also invited to perform at some major sporting events. The Houston Texans and New York Rangers invited members of the Glee Club down to sing the national anthem. So, that was really exiting - because it’s kind of a get out of jail free card. You get to hang out with your friends outside of school, which is something that you normally can’t do your freshman year.” Four years have flown by for Manna since she was that wide-eyed Plebe (Freshman) from Williamsville. Because of some bumps and bruises she sustained during training, Manna is due to graduate from the academy in December of 2015.

Daemen College has been selected as a Top School in the 2015 Military Advanced Education’s Guide to Colleges and Universities, making it the fourth time the college has received this national designation. The guide, which was released in the December issue of Military Advanced Education (MAE), represents the result of a questionnaire of military-supportive policies at more than 600 institutions across the country. It’s intended to arm students with information about colleges and universities that go out of their way to give back to men and women in uniform. “Receiving this national distinction represents Daemen’s longstanding commitment to providing the best resources and support to help our student veterans be successful in their educational endeavors,” said Daemen President Gary A. Olson. “We are grateful to once again be recognized
by Military Advanced Education.” Selection for the guide was based on military culture, financial aid, flexibility, on-
resources, support, and advocacy to help student veterans be successful in college and after graduation. In addition, the Nancy Haberman Gacioch Center for Veterans offers a centralized place on campus for veterans to go to study and connect with fellow students who have served in the military. The college also has an active Student Veterans Alliance and holds several veteran-related activities and events during the year. Daemen’s selection as an MAE Top School marks the second distinction recently received by the Amherst-based institution for its commitment to student veterans. The college was also named to Victory Media’s 2015 Military Friendly Schools list, which campus support, and online is awarded to only the top support services. 15 percent of colleges, The Daemen Center for universities and trade schools Veterans and Veteran Family in the country. She knew why she took the path to being a graduate of West Point and part of the storied history of the Long Gray Line. “I would say probably 85-percent of people consider leaving at some point,” stated Manna. “If you ask most Cadets, ‘Why did you go to West Point?’ It’s much different than ‘Why did you stay at West Point?’ I evaluated whether I should stay and chose to stay. And, I think that was the right decision.” Graduation will bring on an entirely new set of challenges for Manna, but one she embraces. She is looking forward to seeing what life has in store for her during her five-year tour of duty. “I received my branch already and I will be an Air Defense Artillery Officer” she explained. “It will be exciting to finally be on my own and explore what the Army has to offer.” “I injured myself a few times,” explained Manna. “So, instead of a normal

Canisius College presents lecture by Tobias The Canisius College Institute for the Study of Animal Human Relations (ISHAR) presents acclaimed filmmaker Michael Tobias, PhD, on Friday, Jan. 16 and Saturday, Jan. 17 in the Science Hall Atrium. Both events are free and open to the public. From 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, Tobias will screen the rarely seen “director’s cut” of his critically acclaimed PBS feature documentary Mad Cowboy (2006). The film tells the story of Howard Lyman, a fourth generation cattle farmer who turned vegan. He believes that the chemicals and herbicides used in his farming poisoned his land and may have been responsible for his brother’s death at 32. The tumor on Lyman’s spine may have been the result of those same chemicals. Following a miraculous surgery, Lyman abandoned farming to assume his major role as a lobbyist in the animal rights and vegan movements. From 7:30 to 9 p.m. Saturday, Tobias will give a lecture entitled, “The Many Challenges of Coexistence.” He will present images and footage gathered from his more than 100 ecological films which date back more three decades over a tumultuous environmental history. In addition, Tobias will share his views
on some of the most salient conundrums which impact humanity’s habitat, species, populations and individuals. Tobias is president and CEO of the Dancing Star Foundation, a non-profit public benefit corporation focused on international biodiversity conservation, global environmental education and animal protection. He is the author of more than 45 books (both fiction and non-fiction) as well as several edited anthologies. Tobias has written, directed, produced, executive produced, or coexecutive produced more than 100 films – TV series, documentaries and dramas, most pertaining to environmental, cultural or scientific issues. Tobias previously served as an assistant professor of environmental studies and adjunct assistant professor of English and the Humanities at Dartmouth College, an associate professor of humanities at California State University Northridge and the Garrey Carruthers Chair of Honors and Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of New Mexico at Albuquerque. He is currently an adjunct professor of anthrozoology at Canisius College. For more information, contact the Office of Public Relations at 888-2790.

Food Bank of WNY is a gift for affected agencies
In the aftermath of the surprise November storm that crippled many communities, the Food Bank of Western New York will use a $50,000 donation from Wegmans, and funds from other donors designated toward disaster relief efforts, to procure and distribute food in areas hardest hit by the storm. More than 30 member agencies were heavily impacted by the recent storm, including those in the areas of Cheektowaga, Lackawanna, Orchard Park, Silver Creek, Springville, South Buffalo and West Seneca. These funds will be used to replenish the shelves at the Food Bank and designated member agencies. Each agency will receive monies ranging from $1,600 for small agencies to $3,400 for large agencies to acquire food from the Food Bank and distribute it to local families in our community. Collectively, these member agencies distribute an average of 179,480 meals to 24,000 people each month. “Knowing the damage that the storm caused, we reached out to the Food Bank of Western New York and learned they could use our help,” said Michele Mehaffy, Consumer Affairs Manager at Wegmans Food Markets. “We are grateful for the opportunity to help restock local pantries devastated by the storm. As a longtime supporter of the Food Bank of WNY, we will continue to help in its mission, providing hunger relief in Cattaraugus,
Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties.” During the height of the storm the Food Bank of WNY was called upon by New York State to deliver food to an agency in Lackawanna where members of the National Guard delivered packages of food to families in need. In an effort to assist the Food Bank in replenishing its supply of food, Governor Andrew Cuomo encouraged companies and residents to donate. HSBC Bank responded with a donation of $25,000 for disaster relief food and WKBW-TV 7 and the Scripps Howard Foundation donated $5,000 and created a 7 Cares for the Community campaign encouraging viewers to donate on line to the Food Bank or at any First Niagara Bank. First Niagara donated $2,500 and customers added more than $1,000 in donations. Citizens Bank also donated $3,000. “We are grateful to all who donated to the disaster relief efforts and we are extremely grateful to Wegmans. They care, and it genuinely shows in their year-round commitment to our community,” said Marylou Borowiak, President and CEO of the Food Bank of WNY. “These monies will have a significant impact in assisting our local families in need.” Darlene Sery of the Catholic Charities Food Pantries said, “We are grateful for the assistance we received from the Food Bank during the November storm. Their staff worked around the
clock to get food to our agencies so we could distribute to our clients in need. Because of the hard work and the dedication of the Food Bank staff, we were able to provide our clients with food in a timely manner. We now thank them for this opportunity to restock our shelves.” “This is such wonderful news,” added Linette Crelly of the Southern Tier Food Pantry at Trading Post in Springville. “Hundreds of families in our service area who live paycheck to paycheck lost many days of work and pay due to the storm. This is very difficult, especially during the holiday season. We have seen a much larger number of first time clients coming to us for help. This food will help us meet the growing number of clients we serve. We thank everyone for this donation.” “What a blessing these disaster relief funds will be to our clients,” said Brent Doyle of the Southtowns Christian Center’s Feed My Sheep food pantry.

Local sports Sweet Home falls just short in Ken-Ton Classic By Dave Ricci SPORTS REPORTER
It was a tale of two basketball teams that have more in common than they probably even realize. Mark Taylor went 2 of 2 from the line with 32.3 seconds left in the game to help Kenmore West secure a 56-55 win over Sweet Home in the opening game of the Ken-Ton Holiday Classic that was held at Kenmore East Dec. 26-27. The win vaulted the Blue Devils into the title game against Cardinal O’Hara, but more importantly, it proved to be huge confidence booster for a talented team that has not found its rhythm as a group. “We needed this. We needed this one,” said Ken West coach Mike Meetze. “I said to them, ‘I think two weeks ago we lose this game.’ Down the stretch, we didn’t play with a lot of composure. We
played young, we had two first-year point guards on varsity. We threw the ball away a couple times, but we hit big free throws. We did enough with the ball down the stretch in the last minute and got some pretty good communication in the last play to get a 15foot runner off the glass.” Jordan Heine, who led all scorers with 18 points, set the stage for the Panthers last-gasp attempt at the hoop when he sank a bucket with 20 seconds left. Sweet Home got one final look at the basketball, as Meetze alluded to, but the Blue Devils’ defense was able to bat away the attempted buzzer beater to hang on for their second win of the year. Almost mirror images of each other, the Panthers and Blue Devils both have very athletic, skilled players. But both teams entered the Ken-Ton Classic still searching for a way to bring all of the pieces of the puzzle together. Tied 10-10 after the first quarter, the Blue Devils began to turn the tide in their favor when Trent White (13 points) hit a two-pointer and Jon Lo-
renzo went a perfect 4 of 4 from the line. Ken West took a 28-22 lead into halftime. The combination of Heine, Jordan Evert (16) and Brandon Smiley kept Sweet Home in the game and pulled it within one point, 54-53, just prior to Mark Taylor’s winning free throws. “They were huge. Huge,” Meetze said of Taylor’s frees. “He struggled early on in the game, he had six turnovers in the first three quarters, for him to come back and play with that composure down the stretch is a credit to him.” For Panthers coach Scott Martin, it was back to the drawing board to see what they could do to get better results in the weeks and months ahead. “Right now we’re clearly a work in progress,” said Martin. “We have a lot of very good athletes, kind of similar to Ken West. We just don’t have that one (pure) basketball kid to kind of get us over the top.” The Blue Devils would fall to O’Hara, 55-52, in the title game while Sweet Home beat Kenmore East in the third place game.

Sweet Home’s Jordan Evert (2) battles for position with a Kenmore West player during the Panthers’ 56-55 loss on Dec. 26. Evert had 16 points.
Stallions tie Wheatfield Blades, down Hamburg Hawks The Mite Major Clarence Stallions and Wheatfield Blades faced off on Dec. 19 at Hockey Outlet. For the Stallions, Luke Marchant (Clarence) opened the scoring with a breakaway goal. Defenseman and former
Wheatfield Blade Drew Idzik (North Tonawanda), then recorded a goal. On a partial breakaway, Miles Santa Maria (Amherst) rang a shot in off the goaltender’s left post. Liam Graham (Clarence) slid a shot into the net on
an odd-man rush to put the Stallions up 4-3 in the third. For Wheatfield, TJ Bamrick (of Amherst) contributed to all four goals, cashing in with three of his own and adding a helper. Easton Larrabee and Mat-
thew Myhalenko each assisted one of Bamrick’s goals. The Wheatfield goal that Bamrick set up was recorded by Owen Tylec, and it was Bamrick’s third goal that salvaged a tie for the Blades. •••
The Stallions defeated the Lakeview Hawks of Hamburg, 5-1, on Dec. 20, building their offense on solid defense. Stallions’ defensemen Owen McIntyre, Tucker Schoen, Maximus Henning (Clarence) and Idzik permitted
only seven shots on net. Goals for the Stallions were had by: Marchant (two), Alex Fulfaro (Amherst), Nic Zivis (Clarence) and Santa Maria. Assists were had by Cameron Stadelmaier (Wheatfield) and Santa Maria.

In a drive that was extended because of November’s “Winter Storm Knife,” ECC administration, faculty and students collaborated with the college’s Board of Trustees to collect and package offerings throughout their three campuses for their annual President’s Holiday Food Drive, which culminated at Williamsville’s North Campus on December 12. The student-led collection of non-perishable food items and/ or gift cards—which is now in its seventh year—will aid over 137 families within the college’s community, comprised of working students and their families who need an extra hand this holiday season. ECC President Jack Quinn and his staff have organized these efforts every year since he arrived at ECC in 2008. According to Quinn, it’s an effort that’s indicative of the altruism evident throughout the community
college’s campuses. “This drive is a true reflection of the holiday hearts within our hallways,” said Quinn. “We have our entire ECC family joining to give what they can to help our students. That’s school spirit, and it’s alive and well around here all year, but especially at this time of year.” Donations have been forthcoming since before Thanksgiving. The final offerings collected at North Campus—which consisted of more than 35 gift cards and enough food donations to fill over one hundred holiday care packages—will be distributed to families through ECC’s Student Services Office before Christmas. And since 2010, ECC’s Student Government Association (SGA) has teamed a separate toy drive with the President’s Office drive to form a collective initiative even more able to aid ECC students fraught with economic hardships. “The selfless nature of our college’s community has never ceased to amaze me,” said Quinn. “I’m not only thankful, but humbled to be a part of it.”
Keep warm, keep safe (NAPSI)—As autumn approaches, many people are looking forward to a break from the summer heat. However, soon that relief may turn chilly and your reliance on heating equipment will increase. The Electrical Safety Foundation International wants you to be aware of the risks associated with heating equipment and follow a few simple steps to help reduce your risk of a home fire. According to a report by the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is one of the leading causes of home fire deaths, responsible for an estimated 490 in 2010. The leading factors contributing to ignition in home heating equipment fires were failure to clean the device, the heat source being too close to combustibles, and a mechani-
cal failure or malfunction of the equipment. With proper installation, use and maintenance, you can reduce your risk of property loss, injury or death resulting from the use of heating equipment. With the increased use of heating equipment, carbon monoxide incidents are also more frequent in colder months. Gas-fueled heating devices were the primary heating source responsible for nonfire carbon monoxide poisonings. Carbon monoxide is odorless, invisible and potentially deadly. Be sure to continue testing your carbon monoxide alarms and smoke alarms each month to help keep yourself and your loved ones safe. More Safe Heating Behaviors • All heaters need space. Keep things that can burn at least three feet away
from heating equipment. • Make sure you use only equipment that displays a label indicating it has undergone independent testing by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), Intertek (ETL), or the Canadian Standards Association (CSA). • Have a qualified professional install heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer’s instructions. • Make sure all fuelburning equipment is vented to the outside to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. Also, be sure to remove snow or fallen leaves around the outlet to the outside to ensure proper venting of exhaust. • Have your heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional.
