Dr. Atluri brings patients ‘from darkness to light’ John Lauderbaugh couldn’t do the things he enjoyed anymore – in fact his pain was so severe, it was difficult to even move. Lauderbaugh had suffered with Drop Foot and had lost use of his lower legs. In 2009, he had to have back surgery and relearn to walk. The surgery left him with pain in his lower back and hip. When the pain got too hard to handle a few years ago, he visited Dr. Sairam Atluri, of Interventional Spine Specialists. Dr. Atluri treated Lauderbaugh with radiofrequency neurotomy. This involves the destruction of small arthritis nerves. The radiofrequency generator produces a localized heat lesion to either destroy or deactivate the nerve, while leaving the surrounding region and larger nerves unaffected. Patients like Lauderbaugh, who have pain originating from the facet joints, are candidates for this procedure. Studies have shown that there is a 50 percent chance of significant pain relief following the procedure as far out as two years or longer. According to Lauderbaugh since the procedure 99 percent of the pain has gone! “You can’t really describe what it’s

like (having the pain gone),” explained Lauderbaugh. “It’s like going from darkness into light.” Dr. Atluri knows first hand what it’s like to be inflicted with life-altering pain. “It can be debilitating,” he explained. “But there is hope – there can be relief.” Dr. Atluri has spent the last 14 years of his career relieving the pain of local men and women so that they may live their lives to the fullest. Recognized as a “Top Doctor” by Cincinnati Magazine in 2007, 2010, and 2011, Dr. Atluri completed both a fellowship in pain management and anesthesia residency at the University of Cincinnati, Department of Anesthesia. He was named one of the top 70 interventional pain physicians in the United States by Becker’s Orthopedic and Spine Review. He has authored many articles in the official Journal of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. Dr. Atluri has held a board membership with the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians and served as vice president for the Ohio chapter of American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians. Bring your ears to the experts Talk to people who have experienced even mild hearing loss and you will quickly discover what hearing does for you on a daily basis. A study released by the National Council on Aging (NCOA) found that untreated hearing loss was associated with quality of life issues such as sadness, depression, anxiety, insecurity and irritability. The link between hearing and happiness is sometimes overlooked, even by family members and health care providers. “Our ability to hear is such an ingrained part of life, we often take it for granted,” reports Dr. Holland, an Audiologist at Montgomery ENT Center. “It’s easy to take your hearing for granted if you’ve never experienced life without it. You don’t miss it until it’s gone.” Dr. Amy Holland is part of a team of hearing healthcare professionals at Montgomery ENT Center, including Dr. Charlie Tinker. The team is lead by Dr. Mark Grosinger, a board certified Otolaryngologist, who founded the practice 26 years ago. By taking a closer look at hearing and its importance in life’s quality, you can understand how important it is to treat hearing loss quickly and effectively. The Audiology Team at Montgomery

ENT Center is set up so patients can receive all of their hearing healthcare services under one roof, with just one visit to the practice. Patients see Dr. Holland for a thorough hearing evaluation, explanation of test results and discussion of treatment options. If there are any indications that require medical treatment, patients see Dr. Grosinger or Dr. Tinker for further evaluation and treatment. Some hearing loss can be improved with medicine and/or surgical procedures, which are all carefully handled by Dr. Grosinger. Dr. Holland warns, “Be careful where you seek treatment. Visiting a local Audiologist is without a doubt the best way to have your hearing evaluated and to obtain reliable information concerning treatment options.” Seeing a Doctor of Audiology ensures that your treatment is based on science – not what’s on sale. Montgomery ENT Center has offices located in Cincinnati, Wilmington and Hillsboro. Provide the lifestyle they deserve at the price you can afford Suddenly, and without warning, our parents look to us for help with lifescale decisions, just as we looked to them for guidance and wisdom throughout our youth. When did this happen? How did these roles switch so perfectly? How will we fulfill their needs as thoroughly as they fulfilled ours? From our perspective, they seemed to do so sometimes effortlessly. We trusted their good judgment in matters that bewildered us. We knew, without being told, that they acted with our best interests at heart; their children's wellbeing, safety, and happiness were paramount among their priorities. More often than not, their decisions were the right ones. Though we may not have immediately seen their vision from our short-sighted, youthful perspective, we can look back on the results and admire the wisdom and love they demonstrated. All other matters aside, our parents only wanted the best for us, and to put us, as best they could, in situations that gave us the chance to grow and prosper. As the years have passed, these roles have quietly changed hands. It is now our turn to provide guidance and care that will help them experience the well-being, safety, and happiness they deserve. After a lifetime of responsibilities, our senior loved ones have earned the right to be relieved of mundane, everyday concerns, so they can spend their energy and time on those pursuits they enjoy most.

This transition to a “senior lifestyle” may require the sale of the old house, arrangements for ongoing physical assistance and medical oversight, coordination of leisure activities and transportation, and/or dietary supervision. We need to ensure that their unique requirements are met, now and in the future, in an environment of encouragement, relaxation, comfort, and opportunity. We want them to be nearby, allowing for frequent visits with our kids and ourselves. We want them to have friends, and a social calendar as full or empty as they decide it should be. Dignity. Viability. Flexibility. Safety. Essentially, we love them, and we want them to feel at home. The time may be now to start speaking gently with those you love about a move to an easier, more comfortable lifestyle; a transition to “Assisted Living.” We ask ourselves: • Which senior community, among the myriad that try to lure us, can fulfill our loved ones' basic needs while providing all the comforts of home to which they've become so accustomed? • Which senior community provides the highest level of professional medical care? • Which senior community can administer varied levels of care as needs change? • Which senior community will provide the most beautiful surroundings? • Which senior community will allow for the most social interaction

Cedar Village retirement community adds cardiologist to staff Cedar Village Retirement Community is pleased to announce the addition of Cardiology services to its campus. Cedar Village has provided a wide variety of specialty services to its residents, including audiology, optometry, ophthalmology, dentistry, podiatry and dermatology. In 2010, orthopedics became a part of the regular Cedar Village Clinic and, as of June 3, 2011, Cedar Village became the first retirement community in the area to have on-site Cardiology services. John Szawaluk, MD, now practices at Cedar Village on a regular schedule. Dr. Szawaluk completed his medical degree at Georgetown University, his internship and residency at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and a fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center. A non-invasive cardiologist, Dr. Szawaluk has particular expertise in stress testing, vascular testing, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. He will work with residents from all areas within Cedar Village, from independent living through long term care. “We are delighted to have Dr. Szawaluk joining us,” said Cedar Village’s CEO and President, Carol Silver Elliott. “Bringing more services to our campus makes life easier for our residents and enhances the quality of medical care available. This is also a great benefit as we expand our rehabilitation services

for the future.” Cedar Village is in the midst of a major rehabilitation service expansion, developing significantly expanded, state-of-the-art inpatient and outpatient therapy space and updated patient care areas for short term rehabilitation. The new therapy area will open in early July and the overall project will be completed in the fall. The new inpatient therapy area will become the centerpiece of Cedar Village’s first floor, complete with all of the latest in state-of-the-art therapy equipment. Adjoining that will be an outpatient therapy suite which will allow discharged patients to continue their progress with the same therapy team they have come to know and trust. “I am truly excited about the opportunity to provide advanced cardiovascular care to the Cedar Village community,” said Dr. Szawaluk. “The Ohio Heart and Vascular Center and Cedar Village share missions and goals focused on providing the highest quality healthcare to our community. It is my pleasure to be involved in this partnership that supports this mission while serving the cardiovascular needs of Cedar Village residents.” Cedar Village is a not-for-profit retirement community, located in Mason, Ohio. Formed by the merger of two longtime Cincinnati Jewish nursing homes, Cedar Village opened its doors in March 1997.

Julie Sussman and Stephanie GlakasTenet, authors of the national best-selling “Dare to Repair” series of books, have teamed with Lowe’s to provide you with some can-do projects to make your home more accessible for everyday living. • Safety in a shower/tub – A handheld shower unit is a perfect solution for anyone who has to sit while showering. Make each stairway more symmetrical and safe by having a second one installed. Also, be sure to check all handrails in the home for any that wiggle. Use a screwdriver to tighten any loose screws.
