Pharmacy is helping women in difficult times The people we surround ourselves with in difficult times can make a difference in our attitude and determination. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers occurring in women and the second- most common cause of death after lung cancer. The loss of a woman’s breasts to cancer can affect her selfesteem, her sex drive, and just how she feels about herself as a woman. “No one cries here alone,” said Karen Murphy, a 15-year certified mastectomy fitter at Burlington Pharmacy Health Care. Murphy and Melissa Morris are used to giving and receiving lots of hugs. They’re used to sharing tears as well. Many women needing post-

mastectomy devices, wigs and scarves as a result of surgery, receiving chemotherapy or for other medical reasons have come to Burlington Pharmacy Health Care because of the outstanding support and care of the professional fitting specialists there. Burlington Pharmacy Health Care carries a wide assortment of post-mastectomy products, wigs, scarves, sleep caps and other headpieces. They offer personalized and private fitting appointments with their professional fitting specialists. “It is a very private atmosphere. We like taking time with each customer to get to know them as a person before we begin the fitting,” said Morris. “It’s very important to us that it be a pleasant and comfortable

experience.” Burlington Pharmacy Health Care also encourages their customer’s friends and family to come and support women as they choose wigs, scarves, and other headpieces while they receive treatment. “We invite them to come with our customers,” said Murphy. “Getting opinions from friends and family that they know and love is very reassuring and helpful,” she said. Karen and Melissa are honored to support, encourage, and advise women who are looking for post-mastectomy devices and head coverings. “It is an emotional time. It’s important for them to have a support team that cares. Our personal care and quality customer

service set us apart,” said Murphy. “At the end of the day, we are making a difference in a life,” added Morris. Serving the Tri-State since 1976, Burlington Pharmacy Health Care has the area’s largest home medical equipment showroom filled with a variety of top quality, state-of-the-art medical equipment and supplies. Whether you are looking to purchase new, used or simply renting, we have it all. Stop by and let our experienced and knowledgeable staff show you why we say “large enough to serve, small enough to care!” For more information call 859586-6700 or visit www.burlingtonpharmacy.com.

Proven Curves program partners with Zumba Fitness Every new year we all make those dreaded resolutions. By far the most popular resolutions revolve around health and fitness. Routine dental visits equals better heart health When a patient has routine dental check-ups they can reduce their chances of dental pain and the financial burdens associated with complicated and severe forms of dental disease. An example of dental disease is periodontal disease that may go unnoticed by a lack of routine dental visits. This can progress into tooth loss and pain, but if caught early is easier to arrest and manage. Routine dental visits allow a dental professional to screen for

oral cancers and other underlying health issues. Check-ups allow us to keep up with changes in a patient's systemic health status. It is very important to educate patients of the correlation between periodontal disease and other systemic conditions, such as heart disease and diabetes. Persons with periodontal disease are more likely to develop cardiovascular diseases than individuals without periodontal issues.

The link between the two diseases suggest that the same bacteria that is associated with periodontal disease can contribute to heart disease and stroke. In the diabetic patient, a high blood-glucose level helps bacteria grow in the oral cavity. This bacteria growth can make tooth and gum problems worse. Diabetics are three times more likely to develop periodontal disease than the non-diabetics person. It is also important to recog-

nize the effects that medications can have on a persons oral health. Oral conditions such as dry mouth, sores, inflammation and elevated levels of plaque can all be contributed to medications. Your teeth and gums say a mouthful, so routine dental visits are important for a patients overall health. Give Mortenson Dental Care a call at 525-7586 to schedule your routine checkup and cleaning today.

Quick quality service from S.I. Pool Care Quick quality service is what S.I. Pool Care is all about according to owner Sam Ionna. For 19 years he and his family has been faithfully serving area pool owners including installation, specializing in fiberglass pools, renovations, standard repairs and maintenance, as well as deck or

patio work around the pool. For the last seven years they’ve also operated a retail store. Sam, a retired teacher, first got the idea to go into the pool business while working a summer job managing swim clubs in Northern Kentucky. As things would break and he’d try to get them

repaired, he’d end up having to wait two weeks for service! So, he started doing the repairs himself. After about five years he decided it was time to go into business for himself. “I thought there must be others who share the need for this service and it’s worked out very well,” he explained.

They specialize in fiberglass pools. With 70 premier models, they can find you a pool you’ll love and they offer full packages to get the job finished from beginning to end. With a fiberglass pool you don’t have to worry about deterioration, a liner replacement, or losing color after time. With a 25-year warranty, they can provide you with their professional fiberglass resurfacing. Most other companies

will only provide you with a one-year warranty with their plaster resurfacing. Compared to plaster, fiberglass is a non-porous surface which helps prevent algae. This unique process is much stronger than conventional surfaces. It won't crack like concrete, wrinkle and tear like liners, or rust and leak like steal walls. For more information on S.I. Pool Care call 3314110 or visit www.sipoolcare.com.

And our spacious bathrooms with walk-in showers give our seniors a feeling of security.” Bowman said their accommodations offer peace of mind, with fire and emergency systems, security cameras, and built in emergency call system. Safety is one of Ethos’ core values, and Ethos is proud to offer state-of-the-art facilities that are as secure as they are comfortable and beautiful. “We have our own shuttle transit, which we operate on a schedule, so that people can go shopping, which is very close nearby,” said Bowman. “Of course, many residents prefer to have their car available, and we have designated parking spaces for them close by.” Anyone who would like to can

lim down secrets for pets

umans aren’t the only ones fighting the battle of the bulge. The number of overweight dogs and cats in America continues to rise. Nearly half, 45 percent, of dogs and 58 percent of cats are overweight or obese, according to a recent survey of veterinarians by the Association for Pet Obesity Prevention. Here are five simple slim down secrets

to help you – working with your veterinarian – help your pet live a leaner, healthier life. Secret 1: Have your veterinarian rule out medical reasons for excess weight. Some conditions can lead to weight gain. Secret 2: Don’t say “I love you” with food. Instead, spend quality time with your pet. Take your dog for a walk or play with your cat using a fluffy tail wand. Secret 3: Increase your pet’s activity level. Be sure to consult with your veterinarian first, so you keep the exercise safe and appropriate for your pet’s age and health status. Secret 4: Make portion

control a priority. Your veterinarian can tell you the exact amount of food to feed your pet each day to achieve a healthy weight, so you don’t need to guess. Track intake carefully, and make sure everyone in the household knows not to exceed the daily volume of allowed food. Secret 5: Treats count, too. If you are feeding your pet treats, these calories need to be subtracted from the total calories allotted for the day, and they shouldn’t exceed 10 percent of that allotment. Consider low-calorie treats, or break treats into smaller pieces for more rewards with the same amount of calories. Courtesy of ARA Content
