Summer safety and a warm welcome After an abundance of spring rain, it seems that summer has arrived with a vengeance. Pools have opened and summer sports continue. Dr. Tiffany Schussler and her staff would like to offer a few reminders about summer dental safety. Please make sure that all children who participate in sports are wearing mouthguards to protect their teeth, regardless of the type of sport they play. Any type of organized team sport, contact or not, can have a situation occur that may result in a dental injury. “Each year we see many injuries related to swimming. Whether it is a slip and fall or a diving injury, please use caution around swimming pools, diving boards and other wet areas. Injuries may be as innocuous as a chipped tooth, as severe as a completely lost tooth, or a jaw fracture,” says Dr. Tiffany Schussler. “We encourage
everyone to be cautious and safe indoors and out to avoid these injuries.” On a very exciting note, Dr. Tiffany Schussler and her staff are pleased to announce the addition of their newest team member, Dr. Megan Weisenberger. Dr. Weisenberger, a native of Cincinnati, attended St. Louis University for her undergraduate degree. She earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduation Dr. Weisenberger completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at Cincinnati’s University Hospital. Dr. Weisenberger is an active member in the American Dental Society, Ohio Dental Society and the Cincinnati Dental Society. Dr. Weisenberger chose to practice dentistry because she wanted to not only restore dental health, but also be able to create a
bond with her patients. Dr. Weisenberger wants all of her patients to feel comfortable and relaxed and leave the office feeling like family. There are a few simple steps you can take to make sure you have a pleasant ride. Wheels and tires – Check your tires for wear, cracks and proper inflation. Bicycle tires are no different than car tires, and should be replaced if the tread is worn or the rubber is cracked or dry-rotted. Clean between the sprockets using a rag or a proper cleaning tool. Roof Time phones are ringing off the hook Roof repairs keep the phones ringing off the hook at Roof Time at this time of year. “We stay steady all year, even over the winter,” said office manager Missy Shoemaker. “But from now through the summer, we are really busy.” Roof Time does more than just Owens Corning roof systems. “We are certified as a Top Of The House contractor by Owens Corning, one of only three here in our area,” she continued. “So we get a lot of calls about attic insulation, siding, and gutter toppers, but roof calls lead the way.” “Our roof calls include mistakes made by other roofer that are now leaking, to a roof that needs replacing, and everything in between. After a few rainy days, shoddy installation

errors become noticeable to a homeowner, and when they try to get their roofer to come back, they find out that he has moved onto his next victim.” To avoid becoming frustrated, she advises homeowners to consider a company’s Better Business Bureau file, an Angie’s List Super Service Award, and references that a homeowner can call and check. “We are a non-licensed industry, unlike plumbers and electricians,” she says. “And that opens the door for poor workmanship and roofs being replaced when only a repair would have worked.” Many roofing companies don’t like to deal with repairs “because there’s no money in it” or they don’t like trying to fix someone

Anyone can buy shingles from a store and nail them on, but we have the training, skill and experience to install everything your home needs, correctly, the first time around.” Five of the most common roof repairs Roof Time gets include: Missing shingles. A piece of shingle in the yard is an obvious sign. But in many cases, homeowners don’t know there’s a problem until a stain or spot shows up on the ceiling inside. The best way to prevent a leak is to get the roof inspected every couple of years. Roof Time offers free estimates that can include color digital pictures and a thermal camera scan to pinpoint any problems.
Flashing leaks. Most often, leaks occur in the flashing area, where metalwork is installed at any penetration detail on the roof, spots where proper workmanship is especially important, for example, a chimney, a skylight, a pipe boot, or a wall. Gutters. The gutter system is only as good as the way it is installed. They find a lot of gutters improperly fastened to begin with so they loosen quickly. Gutters are first cleaned, and then properly secured, making sure the pitching is right for drainage and that the end caps and miters are sealed to prevent leaking. Skylights. A skylight that needs to be replaced or one that has been compromised in some manner usually brings a Roof Time crew out. A lot of roofers don’t like to deal with skylights because they are somewhat complicated and often come from many different manufacturers. Skylights have come a long way and you should be OK as long as you have a good quality window with proper installation on a pitched roof. Ventilation, Insulation, Radiation. A repair we often find in the summer occurs in homes that are older and need to be properly balanced for proper air flow. If you don’t have good air flow through the attic, shingles will prematurely fail and cause leaks. The sun beating down on the roof raises the surface temperature by 20 to 40 degrees daily! The last thing you want is for the underside of the roof to be heated and “cooking.” Having at least 20 inches of attic insulation and a radiation barrier will reduce the inside attic temperature by 50 degrees, making your home cooler and the AC working less, saving your energy bill!

Be sure to also inspect your brake and shift cables. Lubrication – Apply a light lubricant like Royal Purple’s Maxfilm to the inside of your cable housings and all of the pivot points on your brake and shift components. Maxfilm leaves a tough and durable lubricating film for improved operation and long-lasting protection against wear, rust and corrosion. Avoid getting any oil on your brake pads, and wipe off any excess. Brakes – Check your brake pads. If they are worn beyond the indicator line, they will need to be replaced. Bolts – Make sure all of the bolts on the bike are tightened, but be careful not to over tighten. This includes your handlebars, seat, pedals and shifters. Clean the chain – One of the last items in your bike maintenance would be to clean and lubricate the chain. Clean the chain of dust and dirt with a solvent-soaked rag. After inspecting the chain, use a chain lubricant like Royal Purple’s Max-Chain. Max-Chain is an advanced, synthetic lubricant that reduces wear and extends equipment life. It can be applied by either spraying or brushing. Once applied, the carrier evaporates leaving a long-lasting, dry, wax-like film. This non-tacky film minimizes the collection of dust and other airborne contaminants. Test drive – The final step in your spring bike prep is taking a test ride. Check the gears and brakes.
