President Becky Morris said. For example, being able to watch TV with the rest of the family is taken for granted, but often causes complaints. It’s no fun watching TV in a

closed room by yourself. You become isolated and something you once loved is no longer enjoyable. “With our amplified TV system you can stay in the same room with your family and enjoy the program together,” Morris said. “Our products connect people again and give you back your independence.” Call Beyond Hearing Aids for an appointment to experience these products at 342-4641. Summer safety and a warm welcome After an abundance of spring rain, it seems that summer has arrived with a vengeance. Pools have opened and summer sports continue. Dr. Tiffany Schussler and her staff would like to offer a few reminders about summer dental safety. Please make sure that all children who participate in sports are wearing mouthguards to protect their teeth, regardless of the type of sport they play. Any type of organized team sport, contact or not, can have a situation occur that may result in a dental injury. “Each year we see many injuries related to swimming. Whether it is a slip and fall or a diving injury, please use caution around swimming pools, diving boards and other wet areas. Injuries may be as innocuous as a chipped tooth, as severe as a completely lost tooth, or a jaw fracture,” says Dr. Tiffany Schussler. “We encourage

everyone to be cautious and safe indoors and out to avoid these injuries.” On a very exciting note, Dr. Tiffany Schussler and her staff are pleased to announce the addition of their newest team member, Dr. Megan Weisenberger. Dr. Weisenberger, a native of Cincinnati, attended St. Louis University for her undergraduate degree. She earned her Doctor of Dental Medicine degree at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio. After graduation Dr. Weisenberger completed an Advanced Education in General Dentistry residency at Cincinnati’s University Hospital. Dr. Weisenberger is an active member in the American Dental Society, Ohio Dental Society and the Cincinnati Dental Society. Dr. Weisenberger chose to practice dentistry because she wanted to not only restore dental health, but also be able to create a

bond with her patients. Dr. Weisenberger wants all of her patients to feel comfortable and relaxed and leave the office feeling like family. She recently moved to Boone County with her husband and three rescue dogs. In her spare time she loves to run, read, and spend time with her family. Everyone at Schussler Dentistry is very excited to welcome Dr. Weisenberger into their Northern Kentucky dental family when she joins the practice in early July. They are currently accepting and scheduling new patients for her. Please call the office at 859-6530525 to schedule an appointment.

Roof Time phones are ringing off the hook Roof repairs keep the phones ringing off the hook at Roof Time at this time of year. “We stay steady all year, even over the winter,” said office manager Missy Shoemaker. “But from now through the summer, we are really busy.” Roof Time does more than just Owens Corning roof systems. “We are certified as a Top Of The House contractor by Owens Corning, one of only three here in our area,” she continued. “So we get a lot of calls about attic insulation, siding, and gutter toppers, but roof calls lead the way.” “Our roof calls include mistakes made by other roofer that are now leaking, to a roof that needs replacing, and everything in between. After a few rainy days, shoddy installation

12

errors become noticeable to a homeowner, and when they try to get their roofer to come back, they find out that he has moved onto his next victim.” To avoid becoming frustrated, she advises homeowners to consider a company’s Better Business Bureau file, an Angie’s List Super Service Award, and references that a homeowner can call and check. “We are a non-licensed industry, unlike plumbers and electricians,” she says. “And that opens the door for poor workmanship and roofs being replaced when only a repair would have worked.” Many roofing companies don’t like to deal with repairs “because there’s no money in it” or they don’t like trying to fix someone

L I V I N G

else’s mistake. But Roof Time has no problem diagnosing a roof’s problem and bidding a repair, if it’s all that is needed. “It’s the building block of our company,” Shoemaker says. “Most folks who we do repairs for call us back when other work needs to be done. We build a relationship and that evolves into other work – siding, gutter protection, and attic insulation. Our estimators do not earn commissions, so they only bid what you need. If a couple hundred dollar repair will fix your home, we won’t try to tell you differently.” Roof Time understands that roofing is first and foremost a service industry. As Greg Lykins, a Roof Time Foreman says: “You

n k y. c o m

don’t hire us for the shingles, you hire us for the roof! Anyone can buy shingles from a store and nail them on, but we have the training, skill and experience to install everything your home needs, correctly, the first time around.” Five of the most common roof repairs Roof Time gets include: Missing shingles. A piece of shingle in the yard is an obvious sign. But in many cases, homeowners don’t know there’s a problem until a stain or spot shows up on the ceiling inside. The best way to prevent a leak is to get the roof inspected every couple of years. Roof Time offers free estimates that can include color digital pictures and a thermal camera scan to pinpoint any problems.

Flashing leaks. Most often, leaks occur in the flashing area, where metalwork is installed at any penetration detail on the roof, spots where proper workmanship is especially important, for example, a chimney, a skylight, a pipe boot, or a wall. Gutters. The gutter system is only as good as the way it is installed. They find a lot of gutters improperly fastened to begin with so they loosen quickly. Gutters are first cleaned, and then properly secured, making sure the pitching is right for drainage and that the end caps and miters are sealed to prevent leaking. Skylights. A skylight that needs to be replaced or one that has been compromised in some manner usually brings a Roof Time crew out. A lot of roofers don’t like to deal with skylights because they are somewhat complicated and often come from many different manufacturers. Skylights have come a long way and you should be OK as long as you have a good quality window with proper installation on a pitched roof. Ventilation, Insulation, Radiation. A repair we often find in the summer occurs in homes that are older and need to be properly balanced for proper air flow. If you don’t have good air flow through the attic, shingles will prematurely fail and cause leaks. The sun beating down on the roof raises the surface temperature by 20 to 40 degrees daily! The last thing you want is for the underside of the roof to be heated and “cooking.” Having at least 20 inches of attic insulation and a radiation barrier will reduce the inside attic temperature by 50 degrees, making your home cooler and the AC working less, saving your energy bill!

How to save time on your household chores

In addition, these washers are Energy Star qualified, using 50 percent less water and are up to 86 percent more efficient than

ance, be sure to look for true steam, not washers and dryers that just inject cold water spray mist into the cycle.

Vacuuming Vacuuming can either be something that saves time or causes more headaches depending on how you use your vacuum cleaner. Be sure to use the right attachments for best results. Also, be sure you maintain it properly to keep it functioning well. Always make sure your filters are clean and dust collector is empty.

General cleaning tips Here are a few general rules to follow when cleaning: • Clean top to bottom. Obeying the laws of gravity is the key to avoiding cleaning in circles. • Clean as you go. When cooking, soak dishes immediately after use to prevent more work later.

Experts say you can at save time doing your household chores by modifying your habits so you can work more efficiently.

A T LASTING from page 11

BICYCLE from page 9 loosen hard-to-remove grime. As you’re cleaning, inspect the frame for any cracks or damage. If you see any cracks, you should take your bike to a bike shop for repair. Be sure to also inspect your brake and shift cables. Lubrication – Apply a light lubricant like Royal Purple’s Maxfilm to the inside of your cable housings and all of the pivot points on your brake and shift components. Maxfilm leaves a tough and durable lubricating film for improved operation and long-lasting protection against wear, rust and corrosion. Avoid getting any oil on your brake pads, and wipe off any excess. Brakes – Check your brake pads. If they are worn beyond the indicator line, they will need to be replaced. Bolts – Make sure all of the bolts on the bike are tightened, but be careful not to over tighten. This includes your handlebars, seat, pedals and shifters. Clean the chain – One of the last items in your bike maintenance would be to clean and lubricate the chain. Clean the chain of dust and dirt with a solvent-soaked rag. After inspecting the chain, use a chain lubricant like Royal Purple’s Max-Chain. Max-Chain is an advanced, synthetic lubricant that reduces wear and extends equipment life. It can be applied by either spraying or brushing. Once applied, the carrier evaporates leaving a long-lasting, dry, wax-like film. This non-tacky film minimizes the collection of dust and other airborne contaminants. Test drive – The final step in your spring bike prep is taking a test ride. Check the gears and brakes. Make adjustments if necessary and then get your helmet and enjoy the bike ride.

June is Garage Door Safety Month AE Door & Window offers tips on maintaining your garage door June is Garage Door Safety Month and AE Door & Window is working to increase awareness of the possible hazards of garage doors and automatic opener systems, as well as the need for periodic inspection and maintenance to keep them safe. Your garage door should provide many years of safe operation if installed, operated and maintained properly. The garage door is the largest moving object and can also cause series injury, or even death. If you have children, you should also take some time to teach them that garage doors are not playthings. Garage doors were made safer in 1993 when the Consumer Product Safety Commission passed a law mandating that all garage door openers installed have an auto reversing feature and safety sensors that cause the door to reverse if the door meets an obstruction. It is, however, still important to perform regular maintenance checks. AE Door & Window recommends these garage door safety tips to insure garage doors are in proper working order. A garage door should provide many years of safe operation if it is installed, operated, and maintained properly. • Never stand or walk under a moving garage door. • Remember, your garage door opener uses electricity, which can shock or kill if mishandled. • Never attempt to repair a garage door springs or cables. These are under extreme tension. • Check your door cables for fraying. • Don’t ignore a squeaky door. • Have a trained technician install and service your garage door. • Have containment cables for extension springs. • Never place your fingers between the door sections. • Don’t use an old track when installing a new door. • Get regular service For a complete list of garage door safety tips, visit aedoorsales.com. AE Door & Window works very hard to offer the best products at competitive pricing, along with the most professional installation and service departments. “Educating consumers about garage door safety is important, as garage doors have many working components and if not properly taken care of could result in injury or damage,” says Bill Weber of AE Door & Window. Visit www.aedoorsales.com or contact one of their show rooms, 1260 West Sharon Road, Cincinnati, 513-742-1984 or 8430 U.S. 42, Florence, 283-1984 to learn more about garage door safety.
