St. Xavier offers exceptional experience Since 1831, St. Xavier High School has been helping boys across Greater Cincinnati transform into leaders and men for others in the Catholic faith and Jesuit tradition. Located on a 110-acre suburban campus, its committed faculty and staff inspire the students to pursue excellence across a wide array of rigorous academic programs, enriching extracurricular activities and community service. Students experience a broad diversity of thought, people and opportunities designed not only to prepare them for college, but to propel them successfully through a lifetime of personal, intellectual and spiritual growth. While St. X has a well-earned a reputation as a leader in academics, athletics, the arts, service and more, the school on top of the hill has more than a few sur-
“A St. Xavier education is valuable on many levels, not the least of which is preparing young men for college in an exceptional fashion prises in store. Maybe the most surprising fact is the affordability of the school. Nearly one third of the student body receives tuition assistance to attend. St. X provides $2.7 million in tuition assistance to 31 percent of it students this school year alone. Any qualified student, regardless of his ability to pay tuition, is welcome to challenge himself here. Another fact some find surprising is the bulk of our students have no previous association with the school. In other words, legacy is something of a myth at St. Xavier. Yes, we are
proud to have families who have been sending their sons to St. X for generations. Likewise, we love our families who have sent multiple sons. However, each student arrives on his own merit and achieves through his own efforts. Students with no family connections are just as treasured. A St. Xavier education is valuable on many levels, not the least of which is preparing young men for college in an exceptional fashion. More than 80 percent of the class of 2011 earned admittance to his first choice of college or university. Collectively, the 77
percent of class left with college scholarship opportunities based on academics, athletics, leadership and service valued at more than $42 million. If you would like to learn more about St. Xavier High School and how to become part of the St. X family or to apply for admission, we invite you to visit www.stxavier.org and click the admissions tab on the home page. Come visit St. X for its open house from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 13 or register online to take the entrance exam Saturday, Nov. 19.

Private school directory First-graders Rimel Kamran, Alaina Fisher and Kameron Givan laugh at an amusing passage read by teacher Sharon Nista. Books in the Lower School are leveled according to individual needs so instruction can be tailored to the specific child. This is one of many ways teachers personalize and differentiate learning.
The Summit Country Day School’s success draws from Personalized Instruction at every age Personalized Instruction has become a signature program at The Summit Country Day School. From the day a 2year-old walks in the door of the Montessori Program to the day a student walks out with a diploma in hand, instruction is tailored to each student’s abilities, learning styles and interests. “The Summit’s approach to Personalized Instruction has produced measurable academic success for our students,” said Head of School Rich Wilson. “Our kindergartners typically score above 90 percent on national standardized testing and 86 percent of our 2011 graduating class received merit scholarship awards.” At The Summit, Personalized Instruction begins with a systematic set of measurements and reviews that guarantee children progress through the stringent curriculum. With a deeply embedded understanding of learning styles, the faculty use state-of-the-art technology and a combination of time-tested and innovative classroom techniques and materials to tailor what they teach to how each child best learns. Development of independent learning skills, inquiry-based learning, peer instruction, small advisement groups and low student-teacher ratios add dimension to Personalized Instruction. Ongoing professional development for teachers makes sure the faculty stays current on the latest brain research and educational pedagogies. “At the core of The Summit’s approach to Personalized Instruction is a
belief in the dignity of each child and devotion to care for that child as an individual,” Wilson said. “Teachers adapt best practices in their classrooms to match each child’s innate interests, skills and learning styles. They teach children how to become life-long learners and reach their fullest potential.” Registration is under way for the 2012-13 school year. Prospective parents and students have several upcoming opportunities to tour the school. Daytime visits in the Montessori, Lower and Middle Schools provide interactions between faculty and students. In the Upper School, faculty and students will be on hand to answer questions about programs, curriculum and the culture of the school. Upcoming dates: • Montessori Program: Tuesday, Oct. 25 and Tuesday, Nov. 8, 8:45 a.m. • Lower and Middle Schools: Thursday, Nov. 10 and Wednesday, Feb. 8, 8:45 a.m. • Upper School: Thursday, Nov. 17, 6:30 p.m. Shadow visits and private tours can also be scheduled. Located on Grandin Road in Hyde Park, The Summit Country Day School serves 1,085 students from age 2 through grade 12 in a coeducational setting. The Summit combines the academic excellence and one-on-one guidance of a top-tier independent school with the servant leadership and character building environment that are hallmarks of Catholic education. Country Day awards new student scholarships Cincinnati Country Day School has a long-standing tradition of attracting and graduating high-potential, highly motivated students who exemplify a positive attitude toward scholarship. Students graduating in the Class of 2011 have matriculated at some of the finest institutions in the country and abroad, including Dartmouth College, University of California – Los Angeles, Georgetown University, University of Georgia, Howard University, Hamilton College, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), University of Michigan, University of St. Andrews (Scotland), Smith College, Spelman College, Vanderbilt University, Wake Forest University, Washington and Lee University, Wesleyan University, Williams College and Yale University. In the past five years, 21percent of the graduates have been
National Merit recognized. To celebrate the School’s history and to honor the founders, Country Day has developed the Founders Scholars program. Founders scholarships have been awarded for the past two years to incoming students in the Middle and Upper Schools (grades five through 12) who embody the values and ideals that represent the best of Cincinnati Country Day School – past and present – and those who live the School’s mission. Candidates for the Founders Scholarships have proven records of academic achievement as demonstrated in their school transcripts, standardized tests, recommendations and records of activities. A successful candidate for this award also demonstrates leadership potential and the ability to live the School’s five character virtues of respect, responsibility,
integrity, courage and compassion. The inaugural program was developed in the fall of 2009, and 21 new Country Day students have been awarded Founders Scholarships for the 2011-2012 school year. In May 2011, Country Day formally launched a $10 million initiative for scholarship aid to build upon the Founders program’s success. The program’s scholars range in age from 10 to 16 years and come from 13 different ZIP codes in the Greater Cincinnati area. These students are already making an impact on the Country Day community. Stephanie Luebbers, Head of Upper School, has already seen these students, as she describes it “…hit the ground running with their academics, athletics, arts, and even leadership involvement.”
Theresa Hirschauer, interim head of Middle School, believes the new group of Scholars “represent the best students from across Cincinnati and will contribute greatly to the Country Day experience.” To date, 44 Country Day students have been selected as Founders Scholars and have received awards ranging from $2,500 to $15,000. The Country Day Admission Office has begun to accept admission and scholarship applications for the 2012-2013 school year. Founders Scholar awards are renewable for each year of attendance at Country Day through grade 12. Students must be recommended by a current teacher or principal and must be an applicant for admission to Country Day by Dec. 15.

Each year, the School awards more than $3.4 million in need- and merit-based aid to approximately 280 students. To download application forms or apply online, interested students should visit www.countryday.net/go/apply or call 979-0220 for more information. Cincinnati Country Day School is an independent, private, college preparatory, co-educational institution serving over 820 students 18 months through Grade 12. The mission of the School is to provide each student with superior preparation for college and life. The school inspires a passion for learning and independent thinking through a steadfast commitment to academic excellence, personal integrity, and service to others. Head of School Dr. Robert Macrae believes the Founders Scholars program allows Country Day to attract high quality students. The program also honors the founders who believed that “through superior teaching, character development, and practical experiences, students learn that hard work, honesty, loyalty, sportsmanship, persistence and respect for others are not mere words, but are qualities well worth working for.”
Moeller’s laptop program in 13th year of success In 1996 when Moeller’s former principal, Dan Ledford, first presented a plan to the faculty for a one-to-one student laptop program there was some skepticism. No other school of its size in the area had a laptop program. Now after 13 years the program has proven extremely successful and has prepared many graduates for academic success in higher studies. “Because of Moeller’s laptop program the transition from the high school class-
room to the college classroom experience was seamless. In college we were expected to utilize all the technology that was available; I was very well prepared. Even today, in law school, I often am helping fellow students with tech problems.” -Greg Robinson, Moeller ’06, Notre Dame ’10, Vanderbilt Law School. Over the years the use of technology as a learning tool has increased, developed and been refined. Moeller students are now using tablet computers with touch screens
that engage all their senses in the learning process. Through innovative technologies in the classroom, Moeller students have greater opportunities for creative higher-level problem solving and hands-on experiences. For a Moeller student the tablet computer has become a regular part of the educational process In technology things develop and change at a rapid pace. Thanks to the vision of a one-to-one laptop program conceived in 1996, Moeller students
continue to succeed in the classroom during their high school years and beyond. “The preparation I received at Moeller with the laptop program made a difference when it comes to college projects especially in math and science. Compared to other students, I saved so much time, because using any type of computer program was second nature to me.” - Alex Jaeger, Moeller ’06, The Ohio State University ’10, Duke Fellowship, PHD Pharmacology.

St. Michael boasts Professional Learning Community The term Professional Learning Community describes a collegial group of administrators and school staff who are united in their commitment to student learning. They share a vision, work and learn collaboratively, visit and review other classes, and participate in decision making. “It’s a working journey,” explained St. Michael School Principal Jody Farrell, where they have been implementing the professional learning community philosophy and concentrating on their mathematics and writing curriculum for the last four years. The benefits to the staff and students include a reduced isolation of teachers, better informed and committed teachers, and academic gains for students. “Professional Learning Communities is about changing the emphasis from what the teachers do to what students are learning,” Farrell said. “It also increases collaboration and gets teachers working as a team.” The goal is to create an environment where everyone is on the same page so that a student’s education can be enhanced. Farrell said this is a good fit for St. Michael School and she and the staff look forward to where this journey will take them. St. Michael, a blue-ribbon school, is accredited by the state of Ohio, educating students in kindergarten (half-day and full-
day classes are available) through eighth grade. The dedicated, caring faculty is comprised of recently degreed teachers as well as those with more than 30 years of experience. Students’ performance on the Iowa tests still consistently exceeds the archdiocesan average. Graduates from St. Michael School are recognized by Catholic high schools for their excellent performance on the high school entrance tests. Thirty-two percent of their current eighth-grade students received academic recognition from high schools such as St. Xavier, Ursuline Academy, Mt. Notre Dame, Bishop Fenwick and Moeller. Students from St. Michael School continue their academic excellence through recognition on high school honor rolls. St. Michael Catholic School is part of a faith community that gives witness to the gospel message of Jesus. The staff provides a safe and nurturing environment in which each child can fully develop his/her potential: spiritually, academically and socially. The school community is dedicated to making responsible decisions based on respect for all people. The school also works as a team to build a community of believers in which we pray, work, learn and laugh together. For details, call 5543555 or visit www.st michaelsharonville.org.

The Seven Hills School method: future-focused educatio Confident young men and women graduate from The Seven Hills School prepared to succeed both in college and as engaged members of a complex global community. Seven Hills graduates are equipped with what Harvard’s Tony Wagner calls the “survival skills our children need” to compete in today’s global landscape. These 21st century skills and habits of mind-critical thinking, collaborative problem solving, effective communication, inquirybased discovery, independent thought and creativity are at the heart of what sets Seven Hills apart. It’s the meaningful difference in how we teach and how our students learn: in short, The Seven Hills Method. The Seven Hills method, as practiced by gifted pre-K through grade 12 faculty, plays out in the classroom as follows:
• Pose engaging questions that foster students’ passion for learning; • Focus on content that engages students in compelling global issues; • Design complex tasks that build logic, critical thinking and problem-solving skills; • Structure learning activities that require creativity, independent thought and innovation; • Design opportunities for meaningful collaboration; • Craft opportunities for skilled and confident communication in a variety of media; • Emphasize the use of technological tools for research, analysis, and communication. Some results of The Seven Hills Method are easy to quantify, and they are justifiably proud of their students’ successes. In May, 107 Seven Hills sophomores, juniors, and seniors took a total of 221 college-level
Advanced Placement tests; and once again 93 percent of them earned college credit-qualifying scores of 3 or higher, the average score was 4.2, and 50 percent of the scores were 5s, the highest score possible! Thirty-nine percent of the Seven Hills Class of 2012 has already earned National Merit recognition. Twenty-two percent scored at least one perfect 800 on a section of the SAT or a SAT Subject Test. Twenty percent of the class had a perfect science score on an SAT Subject Test or ACT. Twenty-eight students took the SAT Subject Tests in chemistry, physics, and molecular biology: the average score was 750, and there were eight 800s. It is no wonder that with these results and the expert individualized college counseling Seven Hills students receive from our college counseling staff, they
matriculate to the country’s best colleges and universities, where they thrive and succeed, earning roughly $180,000 per scholarship recipient. How does The Seven Hills Method achieve these outstanding results? “Our teachers put much less emphasis on memorization and much more on the application of knowledge to real-life problem solving,” said Head of School Chris Garten. “In our classrooms, you will see less teacher presentation and much more ‘experiential learning,’ students actively experiencing concepts through direct experience, experimentation and inquiry. “Our students often sit not in rows, but in project teams. Guided by their teachers, they work together to conduct extended investigations of complex, compelling questions. Students write often and get a great deal of prac-

on so students can succeed in life tice presenting their findings to audiences, large and small. “Seven Hills teachers see themselves less as purveyors of information and more as coaches, who help guide students to an increasingly sophisticated understanding of a given issue. “As a result, teachers have a great deal more opportunity to understand their students’ unique strengths as learners and human beings.” Thriving in the 21st century is also nurtured by an educational environment and teaching method that offer students abundant opportunities to participate and lead through collaboration, creativity and communication. Seven Hills is known for its culture of participation and dedication to developing the whole child. “Students here value the totality of their experience,” Garten said, “from the rich array of opportunities in the fine and per-
forming arts to the robust athletic program that provides, for every student who wishes it, the opportunity to participate. Our students all find their place, their chance to excel, and they find it in a community that celebrates their unique gifts.” Examples of The Seven Hills method can be found at every grade level. Students in grades nine to 12 conduct research projects involving extensive data gathering and analysis, critical problem solving and presentation, often exploring issues of contemporary political, social and environmental relevance. The environmental science class and students in northern India collaborate in their exploration of biodiversity in their respective regions. A European history unit gives students the opportunity to become “diplomats,” as they use their problem-solving skills to
address the issues that contributed to both World Wars and the Cold War, deepening their understanding of historical events, the process of diplomacy, and the complexity of current issues. At the Middle School (grades six through eight), English students work collaboratively with a member of the Cincinnati Shakespeare Company to adapt, stage, and perform a representative piece from each of the acts of Romeo and Juliet. Science students collaborate with noted Arctic scientist George Divoky in their exploration of climate change and the carbon cycle. American History students work in production teams to write, storyboard, film, edit and produce podcasts tracing the impact of Constitutional law on current legal controversies facing the Supreme Court or Congress. At the Lower School (grades pre-K through five) level, an
inventions unit engages science students in exploring the historical impact of major technological inventions and in speculating on new areas of exploration. Social studies students compare historical phenomena with contemporary events: exploring the common root causes for immigration in the 1800s with those in our contemporary world or relating their study of the American Revolution to the Arab Spring movements this year. At Seven Hills, our school’s method develops habits and values that last a lifetime: our students’ confidence in independent thought and inquiry, collaborative problem solving, global view that considers the perspectives and needs of people around the world, creativity to innovate and adapt, communication skills to lead and inspire, and never-ending passion for learning and for living fulfilling lives.

Preparing young women for success Nestled in a beautiful suburban campus in Blue Ash since 1970, the Catholic, independent college-preparatory girls high school continues a 155-year-old tradition that began on Oak and May streets in Cincinnati. In the vision of the school’s foundress, St. Angela Merici, Ursuline Academy empowers each young woman to find her voice, define her values and live her vision. Drawing students from about 40 different grade schools, Ursuline’s chal-
lenging academic program provides students with the tools they need to succeed in college and beyond. Ursuline’s course of study is taught by an outstanding faculty of which 77 percent hold doctoral or master’s degrees. The 12:1 student faculty ratio makes individual attention a key component of an Ursuline education, while teachers serve as caring guides to knowledge, excellence and the achievement of the student’s personal best.
Ursuline has a longtime reputation for being one of the premier allgirls Catholic high schools in the Greater Cincinnati area based on its academic achievements, athletic awards, fine arts and performing arts accomplishments. Ursuline is deeply committed to perpetuating strong values, faith, spirituality and service. Approximately 85 percent of the student body participates in some form of community service, and throughout the year all students attend prayer
services, Masses and spiritual retreats. A wellrounded education is key, and with numerous clubs and activities there is a place for every student in UA’s nurturing environment. DePaul Cristo Rey offers a different option for high school “I wake up every morning wanting to go to this school and I’m all smiles when I leave,” says Pleasant Ridge resident Brandon Ford when describing his first weeks as a freshman at the new DePaul Cristo Rey High School. DPCR is the newest Catholic high school in Greater Cincinnati, having just opened this past summer. Currently DPCR has only ninth grade but will add a class each year, growing into a full four-year high school by 2014. As Brandon has discovered, DePaul Cristo Rey is different than most high schools.
It has a college-prep only curriculum, challenging classes, caring teachers, sports teams, and student clubs as do many local high schools; yet there are marked differences. DPCR is affordable and reaches out to families who think they can’t pay private school tuition. All DPCR students work five days a month in office jobs at Cincinnati-area companies through the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) to cover a significant portion of their education costs. In addition, school staff works with each family on an individ-
ual basis to assist with the remaining costs. More than 95 percent of the students currently enrolled at DPCR receive some form of financial aid. In addition to affordability, DPCR offers small class sizes and state-of-the-art technology with Tablet PC computers for all students. Brandon investigated several private and public schools before selecting DPCR and just weeks into the school year, he’s convinced he made the right choice. “I really feel like this school is preparing me for college and a career and putting me on the right path for my future. There are many opportunities to experience firsthand the SUA campus and state-of-the-art facilities, the talented teachers, the tradition and history and the unforgettable feeling you get when you walk in the door. “When I walked through the school for the first time, it felt like home to me and I knew it was like no place I had ever been. Many students and graduates say they love the century-long traditions at St. Ursula Academy from the freshman “beanie day” to the senior tea and graduation in long white gowns and red roses. Upon graduation, students tell us they feel prepared for college. St.
Ursula students are educated to be open-minded critical thinkers and lifelong learners who study all aspects of an issue and form opinions based upon inquiry and analysis. These skills give them self-confidence, high self-esteem and integrity. SUA graduates are aware of their own unique gifts and the responsibility they have to use these gifts to benefit themselves and others.
