Huntington Learning Center under new management Huntington Learning Center, located at 8850 US Highway 42 in Florence, Ky., was recently purchased and is under new management. The center provides students with the skills necessary to be successful in reading, writing, mathematics, spelling, phonics, study skills, as well as other factors that play a role in academic achievement. Building on a 30-plus year track record as the longest running provider of supplemental education and “tutoring” services, Huntington Learning Center has helped thousands of students strengthen their skills and spark their desire to learn. Troy McKinley and John

Meier, partners and new operators of the Florence Learning Center, will offer personalized instruction through certified teachers to Northern Kentucky students, from kindergarten through grade 12. “The entire team of educators at the Florence Learning Center is dedicated to helping every one of our students unlock his or her full potential for academic achievement,” McKinley said. “With personalized instruction targeted to each student’s learning needs, we help students build the confidence, knowledge and skills that are vital for success in school.”

Troy McKinley, former Simon Kenton star and University of Kentucky basketball player teamed up with John Meier in the purchase of the center earlier this summer. Troy brings his background as a Special Education educator to the Florence Center. Meier brings over 20 years of business experience in the Financial Services industry to the center as well. Married to their wives Donna McKinley and Missy Meier for over 20 years, both are proud fathers of three children each, all of whom have graduated or attend schools in Boone or Kenton County

DePaul Cristo Rey offers a different option for high school “I wanted a new experience for high school,” says Price Hill resident Austin Smith. “The classes are small and I like that,” explains Kayla Nielson of Covington. “I thought it was different compared to other high schools,” adds Erika Hernandez of downtown Cincinnati. The three students are describing their first impressions of DePaul Cristo Rey High School and some of the reasons they decided to enroll in the freshman class. DPCR is the newest Catholic high school in Greater Cincinnati, having just opened this past summer; and as these young people have discovered, it offers options they didn’t find at other high schools. DePaul Cristo Rey has a college-prep only curriculum, challenging classes, caring teachers, sports teams, and student clubs as do many local high schools; yet there are marked differences.

DPCR is affordable and reaches out to families who think they can’t pay private school tuition. All DPCR students work five days a month in office jobs at Cincinnatiarea companies through the Corporate Work Study Program (CWSP) to cover a significant portion of their education costs. In addition, school staff works with each family on an individual basis to assist with the remaining costs. More than 95 percent of the students currently enrolled at DPCR receive some form of financial aid. Through the CWSP, Austin is working at Messer Construction, Kayla works at Corporex, and Erika is at Xavier University; all three are gaining valuable realworld experience and learning important job skills while meeting future mentors and contacts. In addition to affordability, DPCR offers small class sizes and state-of-the-art technology with Tablet PC computers for all stu-

dents. “I was usually disorganized in grade school but my Tablet PC has really helped me better organize because everything is in one place, electronically,” says Kayla, “and when I don’t understand something in class, I look it up right away.” Hands-on technology is one of the learning tools that fit with DPCR’s stated goal that all students will graduate from high school and college. From the start of ninth grade, students are encouraged to begin college planning. During their Corporate Work Study training over the summer, the students took two college field trips and are quickly learning it’s not too soon to start thinking ahead. It’s a lesson Erika has taken to heart. “I would like to go to Harvard or Stanford and study forensic science,” she says. Teachers promote college planning and through their instruction help ensure college

preparedness. “The teachers are awesome,” says Erika. Kayla adds, “My math teacher is cool and math class is never boring.” While a Corporate Work Study Program and early college planning may not be typical of other high schools, DPCR does share other similarities. It has an athletic program that includes girls’ volleyball, intramural soccer, and boys and girls basketball with other sports to be added in response to student interest. Students also have input in the co-curricular clubs forming which already include a Vocal Ensemble, Theater Club and Student Government and there are more options in the works. Students enjoy the setting where they learn and play – DPCR is located on a safe, beautiful, 10-acre campus in Clifton. It

First-graders Rimel Kamran, Alaina Fisher and Kameron Givan laugh at an amusing passage read by teacher Sharon Nista. Books in the Lower School are leveled according to individual needs so instruction can be tailored to the specific child. This is one of many ways teachers personalize and differentiate learning.

The Summit Country Day School’s success draws from Personalized Instruction at every age Personalized Instruction has become a signature program at The Summit Country Day School. From the day a 2year-old walks in the door of the Montessori Program to the day a student walks out with a diploma in hand, instruction is tailored to each student’s abilities, learning styles and interests. “The Summit’s approach to Personalized Instruction has produced measurable academic success for our students,” said Head of School Rich Wilson. “Our kindergartners typically score above 90 percent on national standardized testing and 86 percent of our 2011 graduating class received merit scholarship awards.” At The Summit, Personalized Instruction begins with a systematic set of measurements and reviews that guarantee children progress through the stringent curriculum. With a deeply embedded understanding of learning styles, the faculty use state-of-the-art technology and a combination of time-tested and innovative classroom techniques and materials to tailor what they teach to how each child best learns. Development of independent learning skills, inquiry-based learning, peer instruction, small advisement groups and low student-teacher ratios add dimension to Personalized Instruction. Ongoing professional development for teachers makes sure the faculty stays current on the latest brain research and educational pedagogies. “At the core of The Summit’s approach to Personalized Instruction is a

belief in the dignity of each child and devotion to care for that child as an individual,” Wilson said. “Teachers adapt best practices in their classrooms to match each child’s innate interests, skills and learning styles. They teach children how to become life-long learners and reach their fullest potential.” Registration is under way for the 2012-13 school year. Prospective parents and students have several upcoming opportunities to tour the school. Daytime visits in the Montessori, Lower and Middle Schools provide interactions between faculty and students. In the Upper School, faculty and students will be on hand to answer questions about programs, curriculum and the culture of the school. Upcoming dates: • Montessori Program: Tuesday, Oct. 25 and Tuesday, Nov. 8, 8:45 a.m. • Lower and Middle Schools: Thursday, Nov. 10 and Wednesday, Feb. 8, 8:45 a.m. • Upper School: Thursday, Nov. 17, 6:30 p.m. Shadow visits and private tours can also be scheduled. Located on Grandin Road in Hyde Park, The Summit Country Day School serves 1,085 students from age 2 through grade 12 in a coeducational setting. The Summit combines the academic excellence and one-on-one guidance of a top-tier independent school with the servant leadership and character building environment that are hallmarks of Catholic education. COVINGTON CATHOLIC: Northern Kentucky’s only all-male high school is ‘Worth It’ Parents throughout the Northern Kentucky region are increasingly looking to Covington Catholic High School as the premier all-male education option for their sons. The faculty at CovCath understands that boys learn and behave differently than girls, and the classroom discussions and dynamic allows young men to thrive. Understanding that financial constraints can cause families to consider other choices, CCH’s message to parents is “He’s Worth It, A Covington Catholic education.” Families agree. This year the school enrolled 133 freshmen from 24 different middle schools, public, private and parochial. The school commits to developing young men spiritually, academically, athletically and socially:

Worth it spiritually • 100 percent of the Covington Catholic student body participates in community service each year • During the 2011-12 school year, 483 students compiled 16,439 hours of service • Weekly Masses, rosary services and reconciliation are available for students and faculty • Every senior attends a Christian Awakening Retreat, giving him the chance to bond with his classmates, and prepare spiritually for the changes to come

This year alone CCH has allocated $270,000.00 in aid, the highest in our history. Tuition is maintained at approximately 65 percent of what other all-male schools in Greater Cincinnati charge. Keeping tuition low allows CCH to be accessible as a Diocesan school. Beyond including students from diverse economic situations, Covington Catholic is also positioned to support and retain students with special learning needs. In the past two years CCH has expanded the academic support program, which includes two part-time faculty members trained in learning interventions. Their goal is to provide every student with the learning tools he needs to succeed. Students are provided these services at no additional cost. At the same time, Covington Catholic is growing in academic excellence. This school year Cov Cath added a new AP World Civilization course to the nine AP courses already offered. The school continually reviews the curriculum to insure our students leave with an exposure to various career options, and a proficient knowledge in fields necessary for success in college or the work place. An addition of the new Graphics/CAD lab last summer provides state of the art computers and software for cutting edge classes like Computer Aided Design (CAD), Graphic Design I & II and Web Design, as well as programming classes.

Covington Catholic has several opportunities for potential students and families to visit the school’s campus this fall. The first step to learning about CCH, is to visit the school’s website at www.covcath.org and joining the “Admissions mailing list.” Doing so will ensure that the student receives invitations to the various admissions events being held in October and November. On Oct. 7, the eighth-grade Preview to the Blue is a fun evening of games on the Colonel football field and gym. Prior to The Future Colonel Football game Oct. 22, sixththrough eighth-grade boys that have contacted the school, will receive a Colonel card that gives them free admission to the varsity football game, a free hot dog and drink, and the opportunity to win various prizes. Open House will be held on Sunday, Nov. 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Student ambassadors will lead individual tours throughout the school’s campus, with our teachers available for questions. With Catholic identity at the core, Covington Catholic prepares men for college and life. It welcomes them into a brotherhood that lasts long beyond their four years in school. Alumni are not only professionally successful, but men of integrity, men who give back to the community, men who are committed church leaders, husbands and fathers.
