Editor’s note Ah, we’re coming upon my favorite time of year – the fall. There’s nothing quite like that cool air, the smell of pumpkin pie, and the adventure of corn mazes. For me it’s the best time of the year – I feel most alive during the fall months. As we come upon this colorful season, we’re bound to run into situations where we need our local businesses’ services. In this issue we feature several local businesses and highlight the goods and services they provide. Supporting local business is very important. Be sure to visit them and offer your patronage.

Blending the past with the present at Berkley Square Harriet and Ted Schmitt, Hamilton natives who will celebrate their 67th anniversary in February, have always had an affinity for antiques and treasured relics of the past. While moving to their new Berkeley Square neighborhood, the Schmitts were challenged to keep old traditions alive while making new ones. “We loved our home,” Harriet says. “We lived there for 35 years, but ultimately we decided that we had to downsize.” Now, settled in almost a year later, the former antique store owners have found a way to

blend the past with the present. In fact, friends exclaim that their Berkeley Square home bears an uncanny resemblance to their previous home. Hardwood floors, dark cabinetry and, of course, their treasured antiques that furnish their two-bedroom apartment. “We’ve already had company today,” she says excitedly. “They think it’s really nice!” The Schmitts have had no trouble exploring their new community and keeping a robust social calendar. Cedar Village offers hospice care The word “hospice” is one that is not always fully understood. In fact, people equate “hospice” with imminent death. Not only is that not the case, but by labeling hospice in this way, people may be denied a level of care that can significantly improve their lives. Hospice is not a new concept. It has been around since the Middle Ages, when it was a place for weary travelers to rest. Later, hospices became havens for the terminally ill, first developing in Ireland at the end of the 19th Century. The first modern hospice opened in London in 1967 and the hospice movement spread to the United States in the years following, finally becoming a Medicare benefit in the early 1980s. Since that time, hospice programs have grown around the country and around the world, offering improved care and

services to individuals and their families. Hospice is not just for those in the last hours and weeks of life. Hospice care is for anyone with a diagnosis of six months or less to live and who are receiving palliative (comfort) care rather than curative services. With hospice, a team is available 24/7 to provide enhanced care, including pain control as well as medical supplies and equipment. With physicians, nurses, aides, chaplains, social workers, therapist and volunteers as part of the hospice staff, the patient and their family receive optimal care and support. In fact, studies show that patients who have hospice care actually live longer than those who do not. And, support for the family continues for a year following the death, to assist during the grieving process. Cedar Village made the decision to begin its own

hospice program almost two years ago. After intense planning and preparation, Cedar Village Hospice received full licensure and Medicare certification in May 2011. For those who live at Cedar Village, whether in independent or assisted living or within the nursing home, hospice care is available at their bedside, keeping the individual where they want to be – in their home. As a community hospice, Cedar Village Hospice is also available to anyone in the greater Cincinnati community in their own home. With the unique blend of Cedar Village’s expertise and focus on quality, Cedar Village Hospice offers an alternative for end of life services in our area. For more information or a no-obligation assessment, call Cedar Village Hospice at 754-3100.

Clovernook celebrates 30 years Clovernook Health Care Pavilion is celebrating 30 years of serving the Tristate community as a long term care facility specializing in wound care and rehabilitation. The wound care at Clovernook is like no other in the region! According to Amy Mullowney, administrator: “Clovernook’s greatest asset is the employees that serve the residents who live here. You can not teach people to care and we have the most caring in the industry.” The majority of the employees that work at Clovernook have longevity of five plus years of service. Clovernook is set on six beautifully, landscaped acres and is centrally located

in the middle of Hamilton County. Clovernook continually updates the building and grounds in order to stay fresh and clean looking. The facility has just renovated some resident rooms making them large, deluxe private quarters with flat screen televisions with satellite, refrigerators, sofas, and private baths. BERKLEY from page 4 group meets once a week at Berkeley Square’s Coach House Tavern & Grille. Explaining their post-lunch ritual of rolling dice to determine who is picking up the lunch tab, Ted laughs, “I did have to pay a couple of times… I was just unlucky.” Even Harriet, who entered her new neighborhood knowing many other residents, some even as childhood friends, has formed new bonds with many of her neighbors. With bridge, bingo, happy hour and all the socializing in between, she has anything but free time on her hands. As most residents find, Berkeley Square’s events are top-notch. The sheer volume of options creates opportunities for residents to explore new places, including trips to Playhouse in the Park, Cincinnati Pops Orchestra, Cincinnati Reds games and other area attractions. Wellness has also become a notable facet of the Schmitt’s new lifestyle. The on-site amenities at Berkeley Square are hard to beat, especially since it’s just a short walk from their apartment. Ted admits to using the pool up to three times a week, something he wasn’t able to do before moving to Berkeley Square. “We absolutely love the facilities,” Harriet proclaims. All of the accommodations at Berkeley Square are designed to meet the changing needs of older adults. The pool especially is central to this, affording residents the opportunity to swim for recreation or therapy or to participate in instructor-led group classes such as Water Aerobics, Chair Exercise, ZumbaGold and YogaStretch. Residents are encouraged to seek one-on-one attention from Berkeley Square Wellness specialists in an effort to customize their own wellness program. “It’s been a great help for him!” she points to her husband who playfully rolls his eyes. It’s typical of the Schmitts to answer for one another, engage in playful banter and then chuckle at the other’s antics. Finally, the Schmitts have found that new staff can feel a lot like old family. After moving into Berkeley Square last December in the thick of a winter storm, the couple found themselves unable to leave their home. The inclement weather had shut down the roads and many local businesses, leaving the Harriet and Ted without food. Harriet recalls the generosity of Shelly Henderson, director of sales at Berkeley Square, who braved the storm to buy and deliver the Schmitts’ groceries. And though moving into a new neighborhood certainly poses challenges, the Schmitts will be the first to tell you that new doesn’t have to be daunting. In fact, when a new lifestyle is accompanied by old friends, old hobbies, a room full of antiques and your best friend of almost 70 years, it can be simply wonderful.
