Why buy direct from the farmer?

• T ASTE THE DIFFERENCE At farm market stands and markets, most local produce has been picked inside of 24 hours. It comes to you ripe, fresh and with its full flavour. Close to home foods are grown for taste rather than to withstand the abuse of shipping or industrial harvest. • K NOW WHAT YOU’RE EATING Get to know the growers who produce the food you serve to your family, friends and customers, and learn how they grow their product and run their farms.

Please contact Dave at Littlepigs3@gmail.com to order your pickling cukes. (Ready early August.) We are happy to have Dave on our farm working the land providing fresh produce for the Comox Valley. Comox Valley Secures 2015 Island’s Agriculture Show The Islands Agriculture Show Society (IASS) is pleased to announce that the 2015 Islands Agriculture Show will be held in the Comox Valley February 13-14, 2015. The annual show provides a forum for public education on agricultural products, services, and initiatives as well as an opportunity for farmers on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands to network. While the show has been successfully held in Duncan for the past 3 years, the Central location of the Comox Valley will provide easy access for members of the agricultural community from different areas of the island. The 2015 show will be held at the Florence Filberg Centre and the Native Sons Hall in downtown Courtenay. There are typically about 14 sessions over the two days, as well as information booths, trade show vendors, and food vendors present. “Holding the Island Agricultural Show here in the Comox Valley is a feather in our cap and testimony to the importance of one of our Valley’s most significant economic sectors.” says Brad Chappell, Board of Directors, Comox Valley Economic Development & Tourism and owner of Heart of the Valley Farms Angus. “It not only showcases the most up-to-date and advancing trends, technology and tools but creates and encourages a platform for sharing best farm and economic practices, which further invigorates potential investment in our growing sector. From my cattle ranching perspective, it is great to see the CVEDS taking the lead to secure the show in partnership with great regional partners who understand the importance and impact that such a show will have on our region, and in its ability to showcase both our progressive agricultural production and our leading edge farmers.” The IASS along with the Show Manager, Shari Paterson will work with local stakeholders including the Comox Valley Economic Development Society (CVEDS), Comox Valley Exhibition, Comox Valley Farmers’ Market, and the Comox Valley Farmers’ Institute to build on the high level of success achieved in the show’s first three years. “We are constantly looking at ways to make improvements and find ways of keeping the show fresh and vibrant and one way to do that is to host the show in different regions so that communities can add their local flavour to the show” states Gary Rolston, IASS Board member from the Comox Valley.

2014 Comox Valley Growers Guide

A R A R E T R E AT :

Comox Valley Farmers open their gates to cyclists See the farm-to-fork process firsthand and taste the results!

C

omox Valley Farmers are offering up a special treat again this summer. Up to 25 farms and businesses are opening their gates to cyclists, participating in the Farm Cycle Tour of the beautiful Comox Valley, to give a ‘behind the scenes’ experience in the farm-to-fork process with a chance to meet the farmer, explore the source of the produce and taste some fresh samples of their harvest before it goes to market or the restaurants. Come rain or shine, the Comox Valley Farm Cycle Tour offers three self-guided cycling routes on Saturday, Aug. 9 and Sunday, Aug. 10, 2014. Farms will open their gates to cyclists from 9a.m. to 4p.m., giving visitors a rare chance to meet local producers and participate in farm tours, demonstrations and farm markets. “This is our fourth year hosting the Comox Valley Farm Cycle Tour,” said Tyler Johns, chair of the Comox Valley Farm Cycle Tour and member of the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition. “We will be adding a few new farms for variety, and perhaps adding some musicians and guest chefs at repeat host farms, to add to the experience for riders.” The three self-guided cycling routes range from 20km up to 50km and include berry to dairy farms, wine tastings to heritage vegetables, sprouts to oysters, and the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market.

SATURDAY AUGUST 9TH, 2014 Back Road Bliss – A moderate cycling itinerary that begins at the Comox Valley Farmers Market and goes northward with visits to a number of interesting farms. Rural Ramble – This family friendly shorter itinerary also begins at the Comox Valley Farmers Market and visits farms in the Dove Creek area. SUNDAY AUGUST 10TH, 2014 Bayviews – This moderate route begins in the Buckley Bay area (south of Courtenay) and includes farm visits from Royston to Fanny Bay and where you will experience great views of the Strait of Georgia.

Hosted by the Comox Valley Cycling Coalition and in partnership with the Comox Valley Farmers’ Market Association, Comox Valley Farmers’ Institute and Discover Comox Valley, the cost to participate in the Farm Cycling Tour is $15 per person, per day or $25 for the two days. Kids under 15 ride for free! For more information on the participating Farms or to register for the Farm Cycling Tour, visit www.cvfarmcycletour.com

Comox Valley Farmers Market

E

YEAR ROUND BOUNT Y

ach week valley residents and visitors alike are treated to a wonderful array of local food options while they enjoy the fun festive atmosphere at the Comox Valley Farmers Market. With food trends moving more toward fresh, local and sustainably grown choices, we are truly blessed in this Valley to be surrounded by hundreds of farms. With its extensive farm vendors the Comox Valley Farmers Market has been a staple source of healthy local food for more than 20 years. It is one of the few Farmers Markets in Canada that is open year round; operating from early April to late October at the Exhibition Grounds and moving into the Native Son’s Hall in the Fall through to April. All year vendors provide everything from Bison, beef, lamb and poultry, fish and seafood to cheese, yogurt, gelato, honey and spices and salt, dressings, preserves and take home and ready to eat meals and more than 100 varieties of vegetables and fruits. For customers this Farmers Market is the source for the freshest of vegetables – often picked only hours earlier, as well as a place to try new and different varieties of veggies, processed foods, fish and meats. For farmers, it is a staple source of income for their farm

business, a place to try new products, and get feedback from customers. For folks considering the environmental costs of industrial food production they are a source of sustainably or organically grown food. For kids, they are a place to play, experiment with new foods, and connect with the people who grow their food. For communities, they are one of the tools that ensure farmland is preserved and valued. And for everybody they are a place to slow down, chat with neighbors, make new friends, enjoy some local music and feel a real sense of community. Happy bellies and smiles all around. Visitors to the market rave about the abundance of product, the friendly atmosphere, and the great local musicians that bring folks together each week to collect the bounty of the Valley. Some folks come for breakfast, some come for their week’s groceries, and some come to visit. Whether it’s an hour or two, or a few minutes, it’s the highlight of the week for many Valley families. The Comox Valley Farmers Market is open from 9-12 every Saturday year round, as well as Wednesdays during the summer. Find them at www.comoxvalleyfarmersmarket.com or on facebook for more information.

Though our building may be small OUR HEARTS ARE BIG for the pets and their owners in our community and beyond!

WE BELIEVE IN THE VALUE THAT COMES WITH OWNING A PET. It has been proven time and time again the positive interaction that exists between people and animals. Whether large or small, taking care of animals enhances the quality of human life on many levels. We believe owning a pet shouldn’t be a luxury but be available for all walks of life. We also firmly believe front line services such as vaccinations, spaying and neutering are the fundamental steps to responsible pet ownership and be made available to all pet owners in our community. We look forward to our continued care of our large animal clientele and are very pleased to welcome the opportunity to now extend our services to care for the small animal pets of the North Island and surrounding areas.
