A BLACK–TIE AFFAIR 18th Annual Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards Having become one of the highlights of the Coachella Valley social season, this black-tie gala returns to the Palm Springs Convention Center on Saturday, February 11, hosted by Joan Rivers and featuring performances by Queen Latifah, Wynonna Judd, Megan Mullally and David Burnham. Steve Chase, a serious art collector and widely considered a top interior designer of his time, died from AIDS in 1994. Beginning the following year, this annual fundraiser has raised millions of dollars for direct client services at Desert AIDS Project (D.A.P.) while honoring its namesake who was an ardent volunteer, donor and board member. D.A.P. board members Barbara Keller and Jim Casey have led the gala committee in achieving increasingly-higher goals in each of the four years they have co-chaired the event, with a record $1.3 million-plus for the 2011 gala. As CEO of Integrated Wealth Management, Casey has made a five-year, million-dollar commitment as presenting sponsor of the gala. Honorees have included Dionne Warwick and Pauley Perrette in 2011; Bob Mackie and Ann-Margret in 2010; and Barry Manilow, Kristin Chenoweth and Bebe Neuwirth in 2009. FROM THE SKYBOX BY ERIC CARLYLE, CO-FOUNDER

Times are Changing Time often brings changes and as we look toward our sixth year of publication we can certainly say that rings true at Compete. First, I’d like to thank our former Editor, Buddy Early, for his four years of service. Buddy left Compete in October and I wish him the best in his new pursuits. Like the saying goes, when one door closes another door opens. With that, I’d like to welcome Matt Fish to Compete as our Ally Editor. Matt played professional basketball and has a bachelors degree in communications , an MBA and a masters in education. We created the position of Ally Editor to further our mission: to unite the gay and straight communities through sports. Be sure to check out Matt’s first Ally Editor’s Letter on page 8. You’ll see he is a lot more than just an athlete—he is a true sportsman. In addition to Ally Editor, we’ve added the post of Community Editor, one that is filled by Ty Nolan. Ty has been one of Compete’s bloggers for over a year and brings a masters degree in higher education to his new role. His years of experience as a counselor and educator, much of it in the LGBT community, give him a unique view of the community and the impact of broader events related to gay sports. Take a look at Ty’s first Community Editor’s Letter on page 10. As we all start 2012 together it’s important to remember that while a lot of things may change, our tag line still defines us best—I am gay sports, you are gay sports, and together we are gay sports.

Letter From The Editor BY MATT FISH, ALLY EDITOR

I

am honored to join Compete Sports Media as its new ally editor. As a former NBA player, I’ve traveled around the world, learning a great deal about different people and the cultures and traditions they represent. Some of what I experienced was familiar, warm and welcoming and some of it was the polar opposite. In those cases I was pegged as the outsider, the foreigner not to be trusted. So even though I’m straight, I have some experience dealing with discrimination. Compete’s mission is to unite the gay and straight communities through sports, a mission that closely mirrors my own. Based on my many and varied experiences as a professional athlete and postretirement experiences as a special education teacher, my personal mission is to make a positive difference in the world. Coming from a small town in Iowa, I was lucky enough to have a family that emphasized good character and an insistence on being open and accepting of others. My family hosted a black student from South Africa in an all white town through a foreign exchange program. It turned out that he and his younger brother were orphans during South Africa’s battle with apart-

8 | COMPETE | January 2012

heid. Since they had no family, we unofficially adopted both boys and I wound up with two black brothers. And because my good friend from childhood is gay and I saw the struggles he had growing up, I definitely have real empathy for the LGBT community! But I was hired as the ally editor because I clearly love sports! And while basketball is obviously my favorite, I love all kinds of sports played at a variety of levels. As a Compete editor, I want to provide a wide variety of sports information. We want to make room in the magazine for expanded sports coverage. If you have tournaments coming up, please email me (matt@competenetwork.com) and give me the details. We want to utilize our website’s community section for game scores. If you and/or your team haven’t signed up yet, it’s free. And then you can post scores and other important information, such as practice dates and other announcements on our site. Go to www.comp etenet w ork.com/communit y and sign up; that also gives you the opportunity to blog on our website. 2012 is going to be a great year for Compete and it’s going to be a great year for me. Thanks for inviting me to be a part of Compete!

Community Editor BY TY NOLAN, COMMUNITY EDITOR

As an American Indian, I was trained as a traditional storyteller, a gift that also lent itself to writing at an early age. After winning numerous writing awards in high school, I earned undergraduate degrees in Psychology and English (while editing various campus publications) and then completed a Master of Higher Education degree and worked on a Ph.D. Throughout my life I have been fortunate to be part of many minority programs, some because I am American Indian and some because I am also a gay man. My career has been spent in the areas of academia, mental health and communications. I’ve received a Ford Foundation Fellowship for American Indians and attended a Summer Institute in Indian Studies at the University of Washington. I have also been a reporter for NW Indian News (a community newspaper) and NW Indian Radio News. After a grant enabled us to buy professional television equipment, I also served as a producer and on-air host for Native Vision, a public affairs program. But when asked to audition for a local NBC affiliate as a minority on-air reporter, I was asked to cut off my braids to get the position. At that point I realized my future wasn’t in broadcast journalism. It was then that my career moved into family therapy where I taught first at a community mental health cen-

10 | COMPETE | January 2012

ter and then accepted a faculty position at The Evergreen State College. While presenting at an AIDS conference for the Kinsey Institute, I left my faculty position to join my first partner in San Francisco where I served as the first training director for the National Native American AIDS Prevention Center. Following his death from AIDS I returned to Seattle. I’ve had lots of interesting adventures (and challenges), both personally and professionally, all of which give me a unique view of the LGBT community, one which I’m happy to bring to my newest role as Compete’s new Community Editor. When not on the Compete time clock I continue to work with academic programs, one of which entails me teaching U.S. colleges and universities specializing in information technology how to use storytelling to effectively disseminate complex data by making it more accessible. In other words, I have the joy of teaching tech geeks how to not speak geek to non-geeks (did I mention I love a challenge?). In coming issues I’m looking forward to sharing stories with you that impact the LGBT community, particularly as it relates to sports. And I look forward to hearing about your stories as well. INTANGIBLES THE LITTLE THINGS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

LOVE…IN TENNIS AND IN LIFE

A

ustralian tennis champ Margaret Court has felt the need to speak out against gay marriage. As senior pastor in Perth’s Victory Life Church, she stated that society is best served by a strong family unit—her version of family unit means a mother, father and children. According to Court, “no amount of legislation or political point-scoring can ever take out of the human heart the knowledge that in the beginning God created them male and female and provided each with a unique sexual function to bring forth new life.”

SPORTS QUIZ Super Bowl XLVI (46) will take place in Indianapolis on February 5, 2012. What was the original name of Super Bowl I held in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on January 15, 1967? The NFL-AFL World Championship Game. The game quickly became known as the Super Bowl and the name became official in 1969.

12 | COMPETE | January 2012

Retiring from tennis in 1976, she is her country’s most successful and best known tennis player, holding grand slam titles (both singles and doubles) that have never been surpassed. However, since 1991 the Reverend Doctor Court has trained her grand slam technique on homosexuality, recently on gay marriage, declaring that when we are forced to accept law that “violates their very own God-given nature of what is right and what is wrong,” we must be ready to accept the societal ills that follow. Even though Court has admitted that traditional marriages may not be perfect and in fact are often “dysfunctional…and the role models may be distorted and even severely flawed,” she sees no reason to “put forward alternative, unhealthy, unnatural unions as some form of substitute.” She has even slammed the state of Massachusetts (samesex marriage was legalized there in 2004), alleging that the negative effects of such unions have already been felt. But how was it felt? Was there a decline in birth rate that rippled from that great state all the way to Australia, negatively impacting their economy in the process? Please! Are children in unhappy, even violent family settings not deserving of a happy home where two people, despite their sexual preferences, genuinely love and care for them? Three cheers for tennis legends Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova for standing up to Court’s bullying. In an interview with TennisChannel.com, Navratilova said it “seems to me a lot of people have evolved as has the Bible. Unfortunately, Margaret Court has not. Her

Margaret Court

myopic view is truly frightening as well as damaging to the thousands of children already living in samegender families.” As is evidenced by her evangelistic television program, Court obviously knows the power of the spoken word. A major problem for the general public is that evangelists who try to convert others to their way of thinking and believing automatically assume that everyone else is evangelizing from their own personal belief systems. That faulty and dangerous train of thought leads to an assumption that gay couples are automatically trying to convert their children to also become homosexual. Now in her late 60s, it appears that Court thinks that the term love still equates to its tennis definition of zero or nothing. Hopefully Court can remember back to her early childhood teaching that “God is love,” not intolerance. Perhaps then she can begin to evangelize less about gay marriage and its family dynamics and more about the transformative power of love, recognizing in the bargain that love in the real world isn’t a zero.

UP TO:

COMPETE’S STRAIGHT ALLY AND PARTNER, BEN COHEN The international rugby icon created the StandUp Foundation to eliminate homophobia and bullying worldwide. Retiring from a remarkable career (including earning a Member of the British Empire medal), he is now spending all his time and efforts leading the way for equality and respect for all. Congratulations to Cohen for having the courage to put his money where his mouth is—literally!

THUMBS DOWN TO: UPTOWN SPORTS Hockey promoters Uptown Sports, who condemned straight ally Sean Avery for being in favor of marriage equality in New York (and score—marriage equality is now the law of the land in the Empire State). And thumbs up to the hockey stars who dumped their bigoted agents.

THUMBS

UP TO:

HELEN CARROLL AND THE NATIONAL CENTER FOR LESBIAN RIGHTS Helen and her colleagues are working with college athletic programs to coordinate supportive and appropriate guidelines on how best to work with transgender student players. It takes great courage to come out as gay athlete, perhaps even more to come out as a transgender athlete. This pioneering effort helps all concerned to make the process less stressful so that the focus can be kept on the sport and not the athlete’s gender identity.

THUMBS DOWN TO: JERRY SANDUSKY Former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky’s alleged sexual assaults on at least eight underage boys on or near university property have finally come to light. An additional thumbs down to all those who, either actively or passively, helped cover up his child molestation that dates from 1994-2009.

The reputation of the university and/or the football program is no excuse for hiding the violation of another person, especially one who is underage. Congratulations to Penn State’s president and board for taking quick and decisive action to remove all those involved.

THUMBS

UP TO:

THE STATE OF ARIZONA Congratulations to Arizona for introducing a first-ofits kind concussion education program that requires all student-athletes to pass a formal concussion test before being cleared for sports. Now in its first year, it requires them to learn the symptoms and signs of a concussion and encourages them to report all suspected concussions (even for teammates), explaining to them what to do if they have a concussion. Although this state requirement was passed in August, recent reports of dementia in retired NFL players hits home the importance of protecting and educating our student-athletes about the dangers of brain trauma when they’re young enough to still think they’re bullet-proof.

THUMBS DOWN TO: BRUCE JACOBS Jacobs, a sports radio host for WTMM 104.5 in Albany made a recent homophobic on-air remark about two WNBA teams, calling them the Los Angeles Lesbians and the Phoenix Dykeury. He admits that his comments were “ridiculous, stupid and amateurish” and apologized for having made them both to those who heard them and to those who didn’t. But he doesn’t think he should lose his job over his lapse of good judgment since he claims to be non-judgmental about people and their personal lifestyles. He defends himself by saying, “I’m all about equality. I have zero issues with gays, lesbians—I make jokes about everything.” Since when did being non-judgmental and being all about equality mean trying to insult everyone? Instead of doing insult comedy on-air, Jacobs should stick to sports commentary!

ater cooler talk at Compete often turns to the tremendous athleticism and courage we’re privileged to see on a regular basis from members of the LGBT sports community. Then one day the conversation turned to creating some sort of platform to honor the very best of the best in gay sports. And based on our mission of uniting the gay and straight communities through sports, that thought quickly included honoring straight allies as well. We decided the best way to honor our mission

16 | COMPETE | January 2012

was to hold a celebration honoring individuals, both gay and ally athletes, as well as gay and gay-friendly companies—basically to honor diversity and inclusion in the sports world! Enter the 2011 Compete Sports Diversity Awards. While our Athlete of the Year award is now in its fourth year, we created five additional awards that we believe speak to the positive societal changes the LGBT community is now starting to experience, particularly in the area of sports.

hen we created the Ally Athlete Award, the selection committee unanimously agreed that its inaugural presentation should go to Ben Cohen, former British rugby superstar and anti-bullying advocate. As the media sponsor for his initial U.S. tour, we were there in May 2011 when he announced his retirement from rugby and the founding of his StandUp Foundation to combat bullying. We have been so impressed by Cohen that he has made our cover on two occasions. As a straight rugby player with a wife and twin daughters, Cohen’s reputation for tolerance has garnered him a large international

SCOTT NORTON LGBT fan base, a fact that actually came as a surprise to him. In an interview with Compete in 2010, he stated that “I embrace diversity more than just a gay fanbase. I think that everyone should be able to say, think and feel the way they want to as long as no one else is hurt.” His foundation’s efforts to eliminate bullying are international in scope. Rather than start new projects, the foundation helps fund established organizations and programs that are already addressing those issues within their specific areas of influence. With Ben now spending much of his time promoting the foundation, even putting his old rugby gear up for auction at various fundraisers, programs in his native England as well as several in U.S. cities, have already benefited from StandUp’s involvement.

T

We were thrilled to have Ben accept his 2011 Compete Diversity Award in person at a presentation ceremony in November at Exposed Gallery in Phoenix. The crowd of over 200 fans and well-wishers were thrilled to have such informal personal contact with Ben as he signed autographs and had his picture taken with all who requested one. He truly represents the very best of the increasing number of straight athletes standing up as allies for the LGBT community. Congratulations, Ben, and thank you!

Proving the old adage that overnight success comes from years of often unrecognized effort, Scott started bowling at age five. His initial coaching and encouragement came from his famous mother, Virginia Norton, who was inducted into the Women’s International Bowling Congress Hall of Fame in her first year of eligibility. With numerous youth tournament wins and titles to his name, Scott is recognized as one of the most successful youth bowlers ever to hit the lanes.

o say that Scott has “a lot on the ball” is not putting too fine a point on it since he’s not only emerged as the first out bowler in the PBA (Professional Bowlers Association) in 2011 but was also named their 2010-11 Tour Rookie of the Year. In addition to being a fulltime professional bowler, Norton is also a full-time attorney with his own practice in Costa Mesa, Calif. And to top off this exciting year, Scott and his partner Craig Woodward married on October 22.

INSPIRING ATHLETE AWARD

DIANA NYAD Compete, Storm Bowling, IGBO (International Gay Bowling Association) and PUGBA (Phoenix Unified Gay Bowling Alliance) brought Scott to Phoenix in August to participate in a bowling event supporting a local LGBT Community Center. To the delight of all, following the event he held a clinic that offered one-on-one instruction for participants. Having rolled at least 40 perfect (300) games in his short career, his star is sure to continue its steady rise, encouraging many to become part of the sport. We are so impressed with Scott that we invited him to become a member of our Advisory Board. Clearly, we expect continued great things from Scott Norton!

Editor’s Note: Just to address a question by many about whether or not bowling is a sport, the Compete answer is yes, we consider bowling to be a legitimate sport. When Compete publisher and coowner Eric Carlyle (a baseball and rugby player) interviewed Scott following the PBA’s Rookie of the Year announcement, he learned how hard and intense the training and competition were and changed his viewpoint on the status of bowling as a sport. To read the full interview, go to www.competenetwork.com/ blogs/612-eric-carlyle-interviewsout-pro-bowler-scott-norton.

f ever there is an athlete who has been a continual inspiration over the years, it has to be long-distance swimmer, Diana Nyad. This openly lesbian 62-year-old journalist and author has been setting records that still stand today, including her 1979 two-day, nonstop swim from Bimini to Florida without a wet suit. Her current dream is to swim from Cuba to Florida, a 103-mile, 60-hour journey in shark-infested waters without a cage. And while her most recent attempt just months ago was halted due to multiple potentially life-threatening stings from a Portuguese Man o’ War, she refuses to give up on her dream of completing it.

Inducted into the U.S. National Women’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1986, Diana was honored in 2003 with induction into the International Swimming Hall of Fame. She also is a Hall of Fame athlete at both her high school (Pine Crest School in Ft. Lauderdale) and college, Lake Forest College in Ill. where she also graduated Phi Beta Kappa. In addition to three books, Diana has also written for Newsweek Magazine and the New York Times, served as a motivational speaker, been a contributor to a number of radio and television shows, and with best friend Bonnie Stoll, formed BravaBody, a company that provides online exercise advice to women over 40. Nyad describes marathon swimming as “the loneliest sport in the world.” It’s also one of the most uncomfortable owing to the chafing, nausea, hypothermia, swollen lips, irritated mouth, diarrhea and sleep deprivation that are expected parts of the sport. Using her own system of counting in multiple languages interspersed by singing one of 65 songs she has memorized, she knows exactly how long each segment takes and its corresponding number of strokes to keep track of her time in the water. While body parts wear out over time, it’s her determination and mental toughness that, in spite of her age, keep Diana focused on accomplishing her dream. And this is what makes her such an incredible inspiration to all of us. May you never stop swimming, Diana … or dreaming!

BRIAN SIMS

M

ention the name Brian Sims and you find yourself faceto-face with an impressive list of accomplishments in eliminating barriers and promoting LGBT equality in collegiate sports. For starters, as a former defensive lineman for the national champion Bloomsburg University Huskies, he remains to this day the only NCAA football captain to come out to his team and coaches while an active player. Now an attorney with his own law practice, Brian has also been involved in a number of LGBT organizations, such as Equality Pennsylvania, the Victory Fund and the Gay & Lesbian Lawyers of Philadelphia (GALLOP). His own organization, LGBT Athletes & Allies, is devoted to eliminating homophobia by promoting acceptance of collegiate gay athletes with students, coaches and administrators on college campuses throughout the country. Brian and other members of his group also provide positive role models for athletes who are up-and-coming out. He states that he’s never been to a college that

20 | COMPETE | January 2012

doesn’t have out gay athletes and these current and former student athletes are now ready to tell their own stories, making his decade-old college story less important. And that situation has opened the door for his newest venture—running for public office. Currently running for a seat in Pennsylvania’s House of Representatives in Philadelphia’s 182nd District, this recently former president of Equality Pennsylvania has realized that “the way I can continue to lobby for these issues … is to get a gay person into office.” While allies have a voice that those in the LGBT community don’t, nevertheless, he believes that there is no substitute for having an openly gay legislator casting votes and advocating for change. As a result, much of his responsibility with Athletes & Allies has been turned over to students and to Campus Pride director, Shane Windmeyer. Way to go, Brian—you have our vote!

MILLERCOORS

T

here are many companies who support the LGBT community in one form or another who definitely deserve recognition for all their efforts. But when you think about those companies that have consistently supported LGBT sports from the local to the national and international levels over the long haul, we believe MillerCoors tops the list. Many LGBT sporting events, especially the smaller local ones, would not be as successful without the help of MillerCoors and the local distributors and their employees who represent the company. We were honored to have Douglas Sanborn, their multi-cultural brand manager, fly in from Chicago to accept the company’s 2011 Compete Diversity Award in person at the November presentation ceremony. Doug spoke to the crowd about the importance of partnership to MillerCoors. Having been with the company for 10 years, he has spent the last eight of them working with the LGBT community. Clearly he represents the company well, sharing the corporate philosophy of being involved in the communities in which the company does business—that involvement includes conducting business in a responsible manner and in linking partnerships with others. MillerCoors isn’t a Johnny-comelately in its views on its role as a good corporate citizen, according to Sanborn. The company has long championed the idea of doing the right thing for the right reason and staying the course. Their corporate culture includes every employee buying into fostering community partnerships and giving back. And it is that philosophy that keeps Sanborn on the move, ensuring that the MillerCoors “community 360 approach” is always honored. Here’s to you, MillerCoors, and to all your employees and distributors who represent you so well! (And thanks for sending Doug—we really enjoyed meeting him.)

BOOSTING

TESTOSTERONE with M1D Black

by Eric Marchewitz

I

N MY OPINION, MEN NEED TO supplement hormone levels in order to look and feel their best. In addition to proper diet and exercise, boosting testosterone is a great way for people to obtain their desired body. While there are herbal products on the market claiming to boost testosterone, there is nothing that beats prohormones like “andro” for boosting androgen and testosterone levels.

ANDRO SUPPLEMENTS Many people believe that andro supplements are illegal but, in fact, only certain types of andro supplements were banned in 2004. Other better studied versions still remain on the market and are legal to own and use. We recommend that all people be at least 21 years of age before using any legal andro supplement since these hormones are powerful! It is the prohormone 3bhydroxyandrost-5-ene-17-one, a derivative of andro that is still legal to own and use as a dietary supplement. This powerful hormone can be made to boost androgen levels if key ingredients are added that unlock its potential.

M1D BLACK M1D Black from LG Sciences is a product formulated using 3bhydroxyandrost-5-ene-17-one with certain cofactors that we theorize will help it convert more preferentially to testosterone. The ingredients help reduce the conversion to estrogen that was a problem with old andro supplements along with ingredients designed to block key enzymes that deactivate hormones in the body. Based on preliminary studies, we believe that when combined with diet and exercise, M1D Black can help you look and feel your best with optimized hormone levels and higher than average testosterone. As a dietary supplement, M1D Black is exempt from the FDA approval process but it is still regulated by the FDA. M1D Black can be purchased online or in several chain stores that carry sports nutrition. Backed by years of preliminary research, the company has many positive testimonials from real people who have used the product to gain anywhere from 6-12 pounds of mass within a 4-8 week process. Of course the product requires proper nutrition and a good exercise program to be effective. You can’t just take a pill and expect the body you desire.

EFFECTS: THE GOOD AND BAD The good news is that many men have used M1D Black to achieve their perfect body. Most users report seeing their body fat go down while they increase their lean mass. This transformation to “ripped” is why M1D Black is so popular among men aged 21-40 who wish to be in the best shape of their lives. But no supplement is free from side effects. If you are prone to hair loss, it is possible that any increase in androgen levels will cause this to increase. And even though it has a blocker to slow down hair loss effects, it is still possible. Additionally, if you have prostate issues, you will want to avoid M1D Black. For everyone else the effects will be enhanced by proper diet and exercise; specifically taking in at least 1/2g of protein per pound of body weight. Muscle can’t form without protein, so it’s important to eat lean protein sources like chicken, beef and pork or supplement your diet with a good quality protein shake. If you think boosting testosterone is for you and you are over 21 years of age check out M1D Black and see what you are missing!

DAVID

RAE

of the More Than Just a Pretty Face by Connie Wardman

R

ARELY DO WE PICTURE AN ATHLETE ON A COMPETE MAGAZINE cover in a business suit and tie but passionate cyclist and triathlete David Rae, our 2011 Athlete of the Year, is so much more than just a pretty face (and body!). Our June issue featuring father-son athletes had David on the cover (son of now-retired pro-footballer Mike Rae) in sports gear astride his bicycle. Like our three previous award winners, David is a dedicated gay athlete and an intelligent, well-rounded person who is equally dedicated to giving back to the LGBT community.

Graduating from the University of Redlands with degrees in Business and Musical Theatre, David is a Certified Financial Planner (CFP速) who holds Series 6, 53, 66, and 7 licenses enabling him to advise clients about life, health, disability and longterm care insurance matters. He joined Trilogy Financial Services in January 2003 and by the next year he was promoted and is now vice president of client services. With most of his clients being gay, David is also a designated financial planning columnist for Echelon Business Magazine, a gay publication for LGBT professionals, and he has also written for the LA Times, The Advocate, Instinct Magazine, IN Magazine, Frontiers and Bottom Line, among others.

Having grown up with an NFL quarterback for a father, David has certainly had lots of exposure to sports and has tried a variety of them over the years, even football. The closest he comes to that sport, however, is his self-designated title as the “financial quarterback” who offers to lead financial teams to their goals. But David is now leading another team, this time as its captain—Team Popular. The sport that has really hooked David is that of cycling. Participating in his first AIDS/Life Cycle (ALC) ride in 2008, he has become a consistent top fund raiser for the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center as well as a top-notch recruiter for new ALC riders. On his own he has now recruited over 70 new riders for the annual event. And in 2010 David upped his commitment to ALC and formed Team Popular that boasts over 60 new and veteran cyclists from across the U.S. as well as Australia and South Africa. When asked what he’s most proud of in his life, David’s answer is being team captain of the ALC 2010-2011 ride that had a cumulative fundraising total of $380,000. But what cycling has done for David is to give him a platform to

30 | COMPETE | January 2012

merge his social, philanthropic and athletic worlds into one. He has taken his love of a sport generally considered to be an individual one and created a team with an atmosphere of fun and a friendly sense of competition that manages to support his love of giving back to the LGBT community. Beyond his role in ALC, David has also helped raise funds for the center in other ways, including serving as host for their Poolwatch and Halloweenie events. He has also been actively involved with a variety of other charities around the Los Angeles area. IN Magazine has recognized him as being a major force in the next generation of gay philanthropists due to his work with such additional causes as the Human Rights Campaign, AIDS Project Los Angeles and Equality California to name a few. Additionally David has been recognized by Registered Rep, a national publication for the financial planning industry, as an Advisor with a Heart award winner at their 31st Annual Altruism Awards. As if all this weren’t enough, in response to pending drastic and devastating budget cuts in California, he has joined the Ambassadors

Council for Aids Project LA to help raise funds to save essential services that often make a life-or-death difference for the project’s clients and those of other AIDS-related charities. To see more pictures of David, check out our website: competenetwork.com, and to support David and Team Popular, go to facebook.com/groups/169864194335/ We are tremendously proud to award our most prestigious honor, the Fourth Annual Compete Athlete of the Year, to David Rae. We’re certain that he will never stop his good works—our Athlete of the Year just rolls that way!

Gamesmanship ON THE BOARDS VERSUS IN THE BOARDROOM

S

o was the NBA lockout (the fourth in the league’s history) worth it? Although there were five games tipping off the shortened NBA season on Christmas Day, it will probably take some time before players and team owners know whether Lockout Santa put some big money in their individual stockings or just lumps of coal. Basketball, like all sports played at a professional level, is a game of strategy, of gamesmanship on the boards. But gamesmanship in the board room is different. Sadly, it boils down to money and a win-lose mentality on the parts of all involved. The regular 82-game season has been pared down to just 66 games based on the July 1 lockout start date. But now that an agreement has been reached, the real question is—what did the lockout actually accomplish. With an agreement to end the lockout, the league had its hands full reconfiguring the schedule. They had to honor their network contractual obligations but they were also eager to meet fan preferences in order to retain the game’s fan base and what’s left of their interest in the season. As a result, the major title contenders have been matched up as often as possible. But the reduced 66-game season has scheduled 529 back-to-back and 42 back-to-backto-back games that require players, especially aging veterans, to play more games in a shorter time frame. The revised schedule ensures that each team will have at least one back-toback-to-back but not every team will play each other twice. Teams like the Celtics, Lakers and Spurs may be more adversely affected by the strain placed on their older players. Whether younger teams such as the Heat, Thunder and

32 | COMPETE | January 2012

by Matt Fish

Bulls will gain a huge benefit from these same circumstances remains to be seen. The fact is that back-to-backto-back games are hard on everyone but true veterans tend to be more in tune to their bodies and know how to pace themselves more effectively. And if they’re only playing 66 games instead of 82, they may find it less taxing than some are predicting. Restoring competitive balance was a major issue of the lockout according to Commissioner David Stern and his deputy Adam Silver, a goal so imperative that it was worth risking a season’s play. The idea was to give teams in smaller markets an opportunity to compete with the big budget teams with their big budget players—that sounds great in theory but probably won’t work all that well in practice unless a few things on the financial chessboard change. Gamesmanship 101 as it currently stands: t Fans want to spend attendance dollars seeing winning teams with big money players who have a shot at making the finals. t Players who have careers limited by age and injuries want to play with teams likely to make the playoffs that can offer them a better financial deal than a team further down the totem pole. t Agents who make their money based on the dollar amount of a player’s signed contract threaten to steer players away from signing with teams with uncompromising owners. t Owners who have to juggle salary cap amounts while trying to maintain an active, paying fan base want the biggest return on their sizable investment.

t Networks with limited air time and money want to keep their ratings high with fans by showcasing teams with money and the ability to make title runs…the Catch-22 continues. While basketball fans are happy there is an NBA season, hopefully they’ll know enough not to be disappointed if the caliber of this season’s play doesn’t measure up to normal performance standards. There was no pre-season, the time when individual players get back into professional playing shape and teams are making decisions on their plays. Even if players have been working out and playing some pickup games to keep in shape, that’s never a substitute for pre-season workouts and time to tweak plays. And a short season doesn’t give teams a big opportunity to gel based on time playing together. Unless Santa gave each group a dose of the milk of human kindness ala Dickens’ classic, A Christmas Carol, on the holiday tipoff, it’s doubtful that much will change over the long haul. The ripple effects of the amnesty clause, an aging lineup versus a younger one, free agency and pressure from owners that have already triggered Stern to reject Chris Paul’s trade by the New Orleans Hornets to the Los Angeles Lakers are sure to provoke more strategic maneuvering as the season progresses. So did the lockout really accomplish anything worthwhile? Probably not. And what a shame that is. Gamesmanship on the court is what makes sports so exciting; each team is out to win within the spirit of good sportsmanship and fair play for all. Gamesmanship in the boardroom, where the attitude is to win at all costs, doesn’t serve any of us. Come on, guys—just play ball.

Shootout Sports Festival by Connie Wardman

here are lots of gay sports tournaments every year but there’s only one that has been designed from the ground up with the player in mind. That’s the case with the Sin City Shootout Sports Festival being held January 12-15 in Las Vegas, the city that plays host to the annual event. Now in its fifth year, there will be five sports represented— softball, basketball, tennis, wrestling and bodybuilding—and an anticipated group of over 4,000 LGBT athletes from the US, Canada and England competing at venues across the city. Tournament Director Eric Ryan first conceived the idea of a large tournament designed from a player’s point of view in 2007. Then, as a player with the Greater Los Angeles Softball Association (GLASA), he approached the assistant com-

34 | COMPETE | January 2012

missioner with his idea of holding a large weekend event in a location that offered lots of hotel rooms at a reasonable price, a destination with regular and reasonable travel, lots of places to socialize after a day of hard play—oh, and lots of quality fields on which to play. While Ryan enjoyed playing in various tournaments, the arrangements weren’t always player-friendly, something he hoped to change. The model Ryan proposed had GLASA taking on all the exposure and liability in order to use its large buying power to get the best venues and prices on everything from room rates to travel. And no location seemed a better fit than Las Vegas where you could play hard both on and off the field. In 2008 Ryan’s dream became reality. That year there were 40 softball teams (figure 15-20 people per team) that

came to play, a figure that grew to 70 teams in year two. Then in 2010 they decided to add basketball to the tournament play, followed in 2011 by the five sports listed above. When asked about the future of the Sin City Shootout, Ryan says he anticipates the festival will continue to grow, adding a sport or two a year since there is plenty of space in Las Vegas to expand. The festival website, SinCityShootOut.com, encourages people to sign up and get in the spirit of the games early with monthly drawings that, among other things, give away show tickets, dinners, gift cards, guest passes and stays at some of the best places in Vegas. For a great variety of sports and a great mix of people, the Sin City Shootout is your January ticket of choice!

THREE PRINCIPLES TO WEIGHT LOSS IN THE NEW YEAR by Dr. Jean-Luc Le Provost

Dr. Jean-Luc Le Provost JANUARY WEIGHT LOSS SPECIAL! 6 WEEK HCG DIET $189

In addition to Primary Care, Dr. Le Provost specializes in:

Trying to start their new year off right, many choose to make a New Year’s resolution to lose weight. We know there are hundreds of diet plans, pills, and weight loss “secrets” that Americans spend millions on every year. But my prior experience as a personal trainer working daily with medical weight loss patients has revealed three key factors that lead to success. If you want to lose weight, ask yourself, “Am I following these three simple principles.”

PLANNING

Prostate Cancer Complimentary Care

Most successes in life are the result of following a plan. It can be as simple as removing refined sugars from your diet, walking 30-minutes a day and/ or reducing your alcohol intake. Or you can take it a step further and hire a personal trainer, join a weight loss group or seek the council of others who have lost weight. But a plan is key— it must be in place and followed to reach any of your health goals. Do you have a written plan?

Athletic Performance Optimization & Recovery

HONESTY

MODALITIES

A full-time job, family, friends, car payments and social events based around food and drink are a reality of our busy lives. But how we chose to allocate our time, the proper grocery food choices or healthy restaurant meal choices we make require self-honesty. “Just this one time” or “I’ll start my diet tomorrow” is

not being honest with yourself. Are you being honest about following your weight loss plan?

CONSISTENCY A key success factor is repeating your beneficial lifestyle habits daily. Please remember that it is your consistently poor lifestyle behavior that has led you to where you are today. You did not gain unwanted weight in a day and your excess weight won’t come off in a day. But consistently good daily habits will get you to your goal weight. You don’t have to turn your world upside down to lose weight. Just create a basic plan and stick to it. Have you been consistent and honest about executing your weight loss plan? How did you do? Three Yes’s, three No’s or maybe a mix? You may say, “I have heard this all before and I still have not lost weight.” Exactly! You will not lose weight or reach your goals simply by hearing, talking or studying about weight loss. You will lose the weight you desire when you decide to take action and apply positive lifestyle changes daily. Set a plan you know is healthy and then remain honest with yourself and consistent in following it. Respect yourself and your body regardless of where you may be in your goals. Seek help when you need it and make this year your year.
