Healing myself through yoga comes from helping others.

Chuck, D.A.P. client

D.A.P. treats and supports the whole person I was a kid from Arkansas, living the “Broadway Baby” dream as a dancer in New York City, when I was diagnosed with HIV. After moving to California and finding my T cells had dropped to a grand total of three, yoga and meditation became a big part of my healing. That’s why I love some of the alternatives to western medicine that D.A.P. offers and why I’ve also been a yoga teacher there for years.

Happy Anniversary to Compete Magazine

J

@CompeteEric

une is an important month for me. In fact, June is Compete Magazine’s anniversary. While our preview issue came out in December 2006, our first full issue debuted in June 2007. In that issue David Riach, the co-publisher of Compete Magazine and I compared starting Compete (then Sports Out Loud) to raising an up-and-coming sports star—in particular, Michael Jordan. While Michael Jordan is still one of the biggest names in sports, Compete has featured a long list of athletes who have helped make sports more diverse. Early on we featured professional athletes such as David Kopay, Esera Tualo, Billie Jean King and John Amaechi, among many others. We also featured amateur athletes like Jeff Kagan, Jared Garduno, Huntley Woods, Tami Bobst and Molly Lenore. All of them, as well as many others too numerous to mention have made significant contributions to the world of sports. This month we are proud to feature two equally important athletes—our cover athlete, speed skater Blake Skjellerup and professional bowler Scott Norton. Skjellerup made waves in 2010 when he came out to a reporter shortly after participating in the Vancouver Olympics. Norton was one of the first openly gay male athletes to participate in a professional sport. He made further headlines in 2012 when ESPN included a kiss between Norton and his husband, Craig Woodward, celebrating Norton’s bowling championship. Their kiss became known as “The Kiss Seen Round the World.” I know there is so much more to come from both the professional sports community and the untold number of recreational athletes. As we enter our 8th year of publication, we fondly remember everyone who has helped us make it this far. And we also look forward to continuing our work to “unite the world through sports.”

FROM THE CATBIRD SEAT BY CONNIE WARDMAN, EDITOR-IN-CHIEF

Sports Diversity Continues Its Forward Movement

W

@CompeteConnie

e’re very happy to continue covering Olympic speed skater Blake Skjellerup as he takes on his growing role of sports diversity advocate. Currently in New York for some unaccustomed down time, he will be in Cleveland and Akron in August as one of the ambassadors to the Gay Games 9 celebration. He is a big supporter of gay youth and has some interesting irons in the fire. Sounds like an upcoming article to me. With all the excitement over ESPN’s live airing of Michael Sam kissing his boyfriend, we have a piece by out professional bowler Scott Norton. He has been a quiet but very effective mover and shaker in combating homophobia in sports. ESPN’s first televised gay kiss came in 2012 at an official Professional Bowlers Association’s (PBA) tournament. Although the tournament was a tape-delayed program, ESPN chose to show the kiss between Norton and his husband Craig Woodward when Norton won the championship. It was a banner day that continues to have benefits for all gay athletes, particularly providing a model of how professional athletes and their professional sports associations can work together in an accepting and supportive manner. June brings the 13th annual AIDS/LifeCycle, a race to raise money for the cure for HIV and AIDS that draws cyclists, roadies and volunteers from all over the world. For 545 miles over seven days, the diverse people it attracts become a real family riding for a cure. We also have an article on the national craze for obstacle races. There are a growing number of these races that are open to anyone who wants to test him or herself against whatever challenges the race developers can offer. And they attract plenty of people who are ready to take a chance on being “shocked” (literally) by the experience … and more. And don’t forget about our additional stories on Compete Online. In light of the L.A. Clippers owner Donald Sterling’s derogatory comments about Magic Johnson, in particular, we share an earlier story on Magic and his continued relevance in today’s world. He’s so much more than just another retired NBA player!

MICHAEL SAM—A RAM!

W

e have witnessed history in the making! Michael Sam has been drafted by the St. Louis Rams as the first openly gay football player in the NFL. The call to Sam came in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL draft and he was the 249th overall pick. But there are lots of back stories leading up to this one moment in time. We watched Sam’s coming out while still a student at the University of Missouri playing defensive end for Mizzou’s football team—it was big news. We admired his courage, watched how he was accepted by his peers and marveled at how they created a human barrier to protect him from protestors from the Westboro Baptist Church. And when the call came from the Rams announcing he was their choice, we also watched him kiss his boyfriend in celebration, this thanks to ESPN’s live coverage. Sam is one of a number of recent college athletes to come out as gay. How they have all been supported by their teammates, coaches and fellow-students is truly a reflection of the growing generation divide regarding homophobia. To the college-aged generation and slightly beyond, being gay isn’t a big deal anymore. They don’t view it as a perversion that winds up being a career-ender as did older generations. Wade Davis, out former NFL player and the executive director of the You Can Play Project (YCP) has been working with the NFL since December 2013 as part of the YCP’s High Five Initiative. He’s been in the NFL; he knows what the questions are that professional players, coaches and team executives want answered about how to prepare for an openly gay player. As he has answers to those questions, their response has been very positive.

10

| COMPETE | June 2014

The truth is that the NFL has always had gay players. If you’ve watched any of the NFL videos by retired players talking about their gay teammates that go back over the years, you’ll discover that they knew they had a gay teammate. AND in each case they also knew he was a professional who worked as hard as everyone else to win the game. It’s time for those whose talk about a gay player being a distraction simply to cover their personal homophobia to stop it and move on! But now that the draft excitement is over, Sam needs to be a rookie player and earn his position on the team just like everyone else who got the draft call. Davis has stepped in to help smooth the path for Sam and others like him who are ready to take their place as professional athletes who just happen to be gay rather than gay people who just happen to be professional athletes by giving them an insider’s view of the NFL. Davis is making sure Sam understands that “You’re walking into this as a scrub. You can’t think of yourself as a celebrity.” Part of that understanding is postponing a documentary on Sam for the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) so he can concentrate on making the team. The reaction from running back Tre Mason, a third-round pick, is a reflection of the growing change in attitude—“I welcome him with open arms. Everyone’s entitled to who they want to love, and he’s a man of his own and he’s entitled to do that. We’re a team, and he’s also a family member to us and to me now.” So here’s to Michael Sam and to the St. Louis Rams. And thanks to Wade Davis and the YCP. Because of their courage to speak up and to do the right thing, we got to watch history being made!

GRANDSTANDING LETTERS TO COMPETE MAGAZINE

BASKETBALL STORY (May 2014)

OUT & ABOUT (April 2014)

I wanted to let Compete Magazine know how much I like the Brittney Griner cover. As a basketball fan it is really nice to see my favorite athlete in your magazine. Like Brittney, I was bullied growing up and am just now realizing that it wasn’t my fault. I think Brittney is a brilliant role model. I hope to read more about her in the future.

I recently discovered your magazine at a local restaurant. I happen to have picked up the April issue and was pleasantly surprised to see an array of amateur athletes featured. I am so used to seeing perfect body types profiled in community magazines it was refreshing to see a wide array of shapes and sizes.

BLAKE SK

JELLERUP A SPORTS DIVERSITY ADVOCATE by Eric Carlyle and Connie Wardman

We have wanted former Olympian Blake Skjellerup to grace the cover of Compete for a long time. We last interviewed him for our October 2013 issue, just before the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. This time around he is our cover athlete. Sometimes wishes do come true. When we asked Skjellerup what the biggest part of his life was, he quickly answered his love of sports. That is not surprising to many of us who have followed him in his career as a short track speed skater through his participation in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. His love of sports has also translated into an advocacy for sports diversity. Skjellerup, who turns 29 this month, has already done a lot to advance sports diversity. Coming out after participating in the 2010 Winter Olympics, he set the stage for what was later to become a small number of Olympic athletes coming out to represent not only their home country but also the LGBT community in 2014. The number of openly gay athletes might have been greater had it not been for the fear of persecution by the Russian government in Sochi.

www.CompeteNetwork.com

| COMPETE | 19

To make it to the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Skjellerup trained in Calgary since there weren’t other elite speed skaters in his native New Zealand to offer him stimulating competition. He also led a fundraising campaign on the funding website Indiegogo. The athlete garnered a substantial amount of support from the

20

| COMPETE | June 2014

You Can Play Project, Outsports, GLAAD, the StandUp Foundation, Out Magazine, The Advocate, Athlete Ally and other important organizations. In total, Skjellerup raised nearly $30,000 from his campaign to defer training expenses. That shows you the level of support Skjellerup has garnered from the gay community.

“Skjellerup’s love of sports has also translated into an advocacy for sports diversity.” While he did not qualify to participate in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Skjellerup was ready and willing to participate as an openly gay athlete even though the consequences of being openly gay in Sochi could have led to his arrest. Although he did not represent his native New Zealand in Sochi he has been a very busy man. Skjellerup is a strong proponent of Pink Shirt Day (PSD). Last month New Zealand celebrated its annual PSD on May 24 to eliminate bullying, particularly in schools. According to their website (pinkshirtday.org.nz), PSD is about working together to prevent or stop bullying by celebrating people’s differences and promoting positive relationships. Allies identify themselves by wearing a pink shirt on PSD. Skjellerup has become a role model within the sports diversity community by living his life openly and honestly. In addition to his involvement with PSD, he has been invited to join this year’s Gay Games 9 as an official ambassador. The Gay Games ambassadors program began in 2002 with four charter ambassadors—Tom Bianchi, Bruce Hayes, Judith Light and James Hormel, all of which are current ambassadors except Hormel.

Current and past ambassadors work hand in hand with the Federation of Gay Games to promote the values of the Gay Games. And this year Skjellerup is part of an elite group of just over 20 ambassadors who will be in the cities of Cleveland and Akron, Ohio to forward the mission and values of the Gay Games movement. He is in good company. Other ambassadors include Billy Bean, Sir Elton John, Matthew Mitcham, Petra Roessner and Brian Sims among others. The 2014 Gay Games will be held in Akron+Cleveland from August 9-15. Skjellerup has a bright future ahead; the possibilities are endless for someone with such athletic ability and charisma. Perhaps we will see him coach other Olympic hopefuls, something he hasn’t ruled out. Maybe we will see him become more involved in non-profit sports organizations or even as a network announcer for the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea. Wherever Blake Skjellerup finds himself, we know that we want him to be on the cover of Compete again. To read our October 2013 interview with Blake Skjellerup, please visit www.competenetwork.com.

THE KISS SEEN ROUND

THE WORLD

by Scott Norton

“THE KISS SEEN ROUND THE WORLD” is the name given to the recent infamous kiss between Michael Sam and his boyfriend, Vito Cammisano. It was met with the predictable mix of praise and scorn. Being that this wasn’t just any kiss, but a kiss between two men, ESPN made sure they would capture the moment in all its glory. It was truly a touching moment, one of raw emotion, of dreams coming true, of sharing that moment with those you love. It brought me back to that same moment (also termed “The Kiss Seen Round the World”) between myself and my husband Craig Woodward in 2012. The raw emotion, sharing that moment of triumph with the one I love, and the aftermath: the praise, the scorn, the vitriol. To experience all of these emotions out of something so innocent as a kiss was truly what blew my mind. Watching the aftermath of Michael Sam’s kiss brought all of those thoughts back.

Photos courtesy of RJ Ross for iabowling.tv.com

After the kiss between my husband and me was aired on ESPN, I was swept up in a firestorm of media of my own. Countless radio shows, the Huffington Post, and most major media outlets picked up the story and most asked me the same question, “Don’t you think we should be in a place in our society where this is no longer an issue?” It was always met with the same response, “It would be wonderful if we were to that point where I’m not a ‘gay athlete’ but just an athlete.” Tell that to the teenager in Middle America who doesn’t even understand what being gay is and, as a result, contemplates suicide because our society tells him his feelings are evil. The fact that we are out athletes has nothing to do with garnering attention for our own personal gain but instead is to make sure that any LGBTQQI person, whether an athlete or not, understands that he or she is able to live a full, happy and successful life without having to apologize for anything. (Continued from page 28) Were I to be honest, it’s more difficult now than it ever was being an out athlete. You never know when you travel to certain areas if people know about you, how they feel, what they are willing to do in the name of religion or family or whatever color they wish to paint their misdeeds. I can’t even imagine what Michael Sam will feel; I can only hope that his team will have his back. That is the great thing about football—the team can be a family that will always be there for you. Unfortunately, bowling being more an individual sport, we are all out here

30

| COMPETE | June 2014

by ourselves. In those ways I do envy him because he will get to experience a level of openness and camaraderie I will truly never know. The fact is that we, as a society need more Michael Sams. A kiss is just a kiss. Love is love. The more we see the raw emotion, the more we, as a society understand that perhaps we aren’t so different after all, the better we all will be. I am so honored and humbled to have been the first in what I hope is a long list of same-sex kisses on TV, and I will continue to do my part to make others aware of our community’s struggle. I remember receiving my fair share of hateful messages but I will never forget the ones I got from young teens living in Middle America who thanked me for showing them that it did, in fact get better. I can only imagine Michael Sam has already received countless, even thousands of such comments. I can hope that in some small way perhaps ESPN used the positive response of the coverage of mine and my husband’s kiss to capture another historic moment. My greater hope, however, is that the moment we all saw, that kiss in response to Michael Sam’s draft announcement will inspire others, both current athletes and aspiring athletes, to live their truth and come out from the shadow. That is when our society will truly be at the point where we can call Michael Sam an “athlete” instead of a “gay athlete” and my marriage a “marriage” instead of a “same-sex marriage.” I know I look forward to that wonderful day.

ALL-STAR

BY BRIAN RAYMOND, OUT DESTINATIONS

SEPTEMBER GAY SOFTBALL WORLD SERIES IN DALLAS Over 5,000 participants and fans from 45 cities will attend the Gay Softball World Series (GSWS) in Dallas from September 22-27. But arrive a few days early to enjoy Dallas’ Gay Pride on Sunday, the 21st. GSWS competition takes place at two parks, Kiest Park and Softball World. Since Dallas is a sprawling metropolis, getting around will require a car. For accommodations, we’d recommend the Hilton Anatole Brian Raymond which is a host hotel for both the GSWS and Gay Pride. Plus it’s relatively close to the Oak Lawn neighborhood, Dallas’ strong and vibrant gay scene centered at Throckmorton and Cedar Springs Road. But if you want to stay in the gay center, the luxurious Warwick Melrose is the place for you. The Arboretum & Botanical Gardens is the top-ranked attraction in Dallas. September 20th the park hosts the Tour Des Fleurs 10K/20K run, and kicks off Autumn at the Arboretum with over 50,000 pumpkins, gourds and squash in its Pumpkin Village. History enthusiasts may enjoy Heritage Village near downtown, a 20-acre park where 38 restored historic homes and buildings have been relocated to preserve a taste of Dallas from the 1840s through 1910. Nearby Reunion Tower rises up 560 feet and offers 360 degree views of Dallas from its Geo-Deck, and down on the 50th floor you can enjoy fine dining in Wolfgang Pucks’ revolving restaurant Five Sixty. Just north of downtown you’ll find the Dallas Arts District, the largest arts district in the U.S. covering 68 acres. Comprised of several museums and performance halls, the most noted is the Dallas Performing Arts Center which has been called the “most significant performing art center to be built since New York’s Lincoln Center.” Downtown is not very active at night but the Oak Lawn “gayborhood” is! There you’ll find many popular and busy gay bars, clubs and restaurants. Whether you prefer an early happy hour or dancing through the night, Oak Lawn has it all. Our top picks for nightlife are: Jr’s Bar & Grill (highly popular), the Round-Up Saloon (top country western), Station 4 (late night dance club) and Sue Ellen’s (women’s dance club). To visit Dallas or for help in planning your own or group travel, you can contact Brian Raymond at brian@OutDestinations.com or 866-217-2341.

THERE’S NO OFF-SEASON FOR AIDS By Harry Andrew ON JUNE 1 THOUSANDS OF CYCLISTS FROM all over the world will begin the 13th Annual AIDS/LifeCycle, the seven-day, 545-mile trip from San Francisco to Los Angeles that raises money and awareness for the HIV and AIDS services of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the Los Angeles Gay & Lesbian Center. There is no off-season for AIDS. Since the start of the AIDS epidemic in 1981, 1.7 million Americans have been infected with HIV and more than 617,025 have died of AIDS-related causes. 1.1 million Americans are now living with HIV/AIDS thanks to advances in treating the disease but that has tended to lull people into thinking that HIV/AIDS is a thing of the past. Current statistics show that an estimated 21 percent of people living with HIV are undiagnosed and every 9.5 minutes someone in the U.S. is infected with HIV. Young adults and teens between 13 and 29 represent 34 percent of new HIV infections, the largest share of any age group. There is a story behind every person who rides in this event, a reason that almost without exception is prompted by love—a loved one who has died from AIDS, a loved one or co-worker who is living with HIV/AIDS, maybe even the rider who is living with HIV/ AIDS. This is the foundation of the strong bond formed by the riders and the roadies and volunteers who help with on-the-road food, hydration, bike repair and medical needs. The group becomes its own tightly-knit community-on-the-move and participants all talk about it being a life-changing experience. While the ride lasts for just seven days, the preparation for the next ride begins after the current one is finished. You don’t have to be a trained cyclist or even a casual one in order to participate. There are all sorts of classes throughout the year that range from tips on selecting a bike, to riding and fundraising tips as well as actual training rides. But if you know you can’t make the ride and still want to be part of the fund raising effort, you can join the AIDS/LifeCycle Virtual Cyclists. This group includes the following: • Past participants taking a year off or have “retired” from the event • People unable to take a week off due to work or life conflicts, including injuries • People who don’t have time to commit to fully training for the event • People who face a physical challenge that makes it difficult to ride or roadie • People who just want to support the cause by fundraising So if you’d love to participate but not sure if you’re up to it, contact them for help at www.aidslifecycle.org/about/contact-us.html.

EWG’S CLEAN 15™ BY MIRIAM LATTO

Dr. Weil says that the data used took into account people’s typical way of washing and preparing produce and the 15 foods shown below had the lowest pesticide load, and “consequently are the safest conventionally grown crops to consume from the standpoint of pesticide contamination,” making them foods that you don’t have to buy organically grown. No single fruit sample tested positive for more than four types of pesticides and seven percent of the samples had just one detectible pesticide, according to the EWG, while less than 11 percent of pineapple samples showed detectable pesticides as well as 78 percent of mango, 75 percent of kiwi and 61 percent of cantaloupe samples. FROM THE EWG SHOPPER’S GUIDE TO PESTICIDES IN PRODUCE: 1. AVOCADOS 2. SWEET CORN 3. PINEAPPLE 4. CABBAGE 5. SWEET PEAS (FROZEN) 6. ONIONS LAST MONTH WE LOOKED AT THE ENVIRONMENTAL WORKING GROUP’S (EWG) DIRTY DOZEN™ LIST containing the 12 foods that according to their website, www.ewg.org, “In government tests analyzed by the Environmental Working Group pesticide residues were found on 67 percent of food samples after they had been washed or peeled. We found striking differences between the number of pesticides and amount of residues detected on Dirty Dozen Plus™ and Clean Fifteen™ foods.” Now we’re taking a look at their list of Clean Fifteen™ foods that are the least contaminated by pesticide residues. Dr. Andrew Weil, well-known medical doctor and naturopath who is the founder, professor and director of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona, has an ongoing partnership with the EWG.

FITNESS

BREATHE YOUR WAY TO A BETTER WORKOUT BY MARK MOON THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF CONFUSION about correct breathing techniques, especially when it comes to resistance training. Correct breathing is relevant in all types of exercises, not just resistance training. Yes, the world of health and fitness does go beyond looking like an oversized figurine character. I know correct breathing may seem common knowledge for the everyday gym junkie, but for your weekend warrior or someone who is unconditioned to exercise; this can be confusing and a very serious issue. This is especially important for a male over 40 years of age or someone with a history of heart attack, stroke or high blood pressure in the family. Before we get carried away with the technical stuff I would like to say that if in doubt, just breathe normally. To make learning easy for you, I have broken my tips down into three basic training styles.

3.

STRETCHING/CORE—Be it static (also known as an isometric contraction) or dynamic stretching movements such as Yoga and Pilates, your breathing is still extremely important. In core exercises such as the plank, maintain a regular controlled rhythm without holding your breath. In the case of stretching, you want your body to relax as you stretch so your muscle fibres lengthen. The easiest way to do this is to exhale. At the risk of confusing you, stretching is the opposite of resistance training.

If you find it hard to catch your breath while training, are predisposed to blood pressure issues or have regular episodes of feeling dizzy or light headed, I recommend you consult your doctor for a complete physical before beginning your training program.

1.

RESISTANCE TRAINING—Plying yourself full of pasta before a workout really is a waste of calories—you don’t need to stockpile carbohydrates to achieve great results and last the distance (unless you’re running a marathon, that is). Have a small healthy snack featuring some protein and/or fruit and vegetables about 45 minutes before a session to help fuel your workout. All those complex carbohydrates can be hard to digest and cause your body to be sluggish and not burn fat as a fuel. Remember to hydrate adequately, too.

2.

CARDIO/CIRCUITS—When training with light-to-moderate weight, such as circuits or cardio training, keep a regular breathing pattern. Your focus is to get plenty of oxygen into your lungs each time you breathe to keep your blood supply and muscles oxygenated. Avoid looking down or dropping your chin like I see a lot of people do when they start to fatigue, as this can interfere with your breathing. Keep your chin up, shoulders back and your airways open at all times.
