Raised Garden Bed Kit Information You will need a 1/2" wrench to assemble your raised bed boxes. Any type will work but the easiest and fastest is a 1/2" socket wrench on a ratchet handle. Tighten the lag screws good and snug but do not over tighten. A level is also helpful when setting the beds in position. Assembly tip: To help to prevent the socket from scratching the black finish on the washers, wad up a small piece of paper and stuff it in your 1/2" socket so that the lag screws only go into the socket no deeper than the height of the lag screw head. A few of our customers have used an electric drill for assembly. We do not recommend this. An electric drill has the power to cause serious injury to your wrist, to damage the boards and possibly strip the screw holes in the posts. The customers that have used an electric drill, did so with extreme caution and only used the drill to run the screws in until the washers were still loose and then finished tightening with a hand wrench. The cedar boards in most kits are interchangeable and reversible. Most boards are flat but some have a slight “cup” when viewed from the end. It’s best to attach a cupped board to the posts with the “cup” facing in as show in figure 1. However, if you like the look of the cup side better, you can put that side out and tighten the screws carefully.

A word about color variations in the wood. Western Red Cedar has many color variations from board to board and even from side to side of a given board. However, given time and sunshine, the color differences will diminish as the cedar takes on a charming silver-gray sheen. Or, you can apply a finish oil to the outside if you want to keep the wood grain look. The bad news is you will have to reapply it every year or two. The best product that we have tried is Penofin Cedar Exterior “blue label”, made by Performance Coatings Inc. of Ukiah, California (www.penofin.com). Their website will give you the nearest dealer. It has "Brazilian rosewood oil" as the protective ingredient. It lasts much longer between applications than anything else we have found. A recent customer tried the Penofin Cedar Exterior Ultra Premium "red label" and really liked the way it looks on his raised beds. It has more of the Brazilian rosewood oil and will last even longer. Western Red Cedar is a naturally rot and insect resistant wood (eating it is usually fatal to most termites). It will last much longer in your garden than most other woods. However, to greatly extend the life (by 2-3 times) of your cedar raised beds, you can apply a copper naphthenate wood preservative to the inside before you add your soil (let it dry 24 hrs). You can brush on 2-3 coats (1 hr between coats). Apply with good ventilation. When dry, copper naphthenate is a non-toxic, nonleaching wood preservative that is environmentally friendly (it's the only ground contact wood preservative that is EPA approved for home use). It works by bonding copper tightly to the cellulose in the wood fibers where the copper inhibits many types of wood rot fungus. The bad news is that some brands stain the cedar a rather unattractive greenish color so you may only want to only coat the insides and bottom edges of your raised garden beds (any part that is in contact with the soil). You can get it at your local lumber or hardware store. Some brands are: Jasco Termin-8; Copper Green; Black

Flag Termin-8; Behr Dock and Fence Post Preservative; DAP Woodlife Wood Preservative and others. However, if you want to do organic gardening you can forgo using any preservative. Western Red Cedar is one of the most decay resistant of woods and should last many years in bare condition. You will want to make your raised beds reasonably level so that water soaks in evenly and does not run to one end. Fill your beds right to the brim with loose un-compacted soil. Your plants will love the well aerated soil. Expect some settling throughout the year. The soil will fluff up again when you spade up next season. Add a little soil or compost to make up for what the plants used. If your garden is near trees or shrubs with spreading root systems, you may want to use a weed barrier cloth under your beds. Willow, for example, will send out roots 20-30 feet into your garden and compete with your plants for nutrients. For 11” high beds, dig down 5-6 inches, line the hole with weed barrier and staple or tack the edges to the inside of the bed. It allows water to pass but not weeds and roots. Get it at your local garden center or hardware store. It’s also a worm barrier so go to a bait shop and get some night-crawlers (or water your lawn and catch some at night) and put several in each bed. If you have any questions about assembling your raised garden beds, cedar finishes or wood preservatives or anything else about raised bed gardens, please e-mail us at ipwoodys@gmail.com or call 1.833.642.7336 and we will try to answer your questions.

CAUTION Use the drill nut driver to run lag screws in but do not tighten down lags with an electric drill. Damage to boards and stripped screw holes can occur! Run lags in with the drill nut driver until the washers are still loose. Then finish tightening with a ½” box end wrench. Do not over tighten the lag screws. A spacer has been glued in the nut driver to prevent the black finish on the washers from being scratched. Do not remove the spacer.

Any type will work but the easiest and fastest is a 1/2” socket wrench on a ratchet handle. Tighten the lag screws good and snug but do not over tighten. Questions? - call 1-541-215-0256 or ____________________________________________ EASY ASSEMBLY e-mail: ipwoody@charter.net ______________________________________________ PLAN You will need a 1/2” wrench to assemble this raised bed kit. Any type will work but the easiest and fastest is a 1/2” socket wrench on a ratchet handle. Tighten the lag screws good and snug but do not over tighten. Use of an elecric drill with a nut driver bit or socket is not recommended. An electric drill has the power to cause SERIOUS INJURY to your wrist, to damage the boards and strip out the screw holes in the posts.

To Assemble Double Height (DH) Bed Boxes: • Assemble the washers on the lag bolts and insert them into the holes in the board.

• Start lag bolts by hand in predrilled holes in corner post, then tighten with a 1/2” wrench.
