EDITOR THE POWER OF POWER REAL POWER CAN BE MEASURED BY INFLUENCE. PERIOD. ASK TAYLOR SWIFT. BY RICHARD PÉREZ-FERIA

DONALD’S DUCK Power without perspective or self-awareness looks an awful lot like Donald Trump. And, as we all know by now, The Donald is a curious case study all unto himself.

always suspected I had it, but I got definitive proof right before lunch on a sunny Friday in Miami in Mrs. Weprin’s third grade classroom when I was all of eight years old. In that moment, I realized how powerful I was, and I have never forgotten how that felt. Ever. It was intoxicating, heady, addictive. The actual details of the event revolved around trying to convince my entire class to do some sort of activity that they had decided they did not want to do (it may have involved glue), and for some reason, I insisted on taking the contrarian view. I took to my task with spirited zealotry. I was a diminutive Perry Mason making my closing argument and I remember my classmates staring at me as if I was an alien—a smart alien, thank you very much. They sat there rapt by my eloquence (at least that’s what it looked like to me), as if what I said actually mattered. And just like that, I swayed the popular opinion and we ended up doing whatever the activity was I wanted to do. That, friends, is how power—real power— works and I had it in spades. Oh yeah I did. Over the next decade of my adolescence, I’d occasionally trot out my “power” to keep my skills sharp and I’d invariably change my siblings’ or friends’ minds about something seemingly trivial (what movie to see,

6

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

what restaurant to go to) and I’d keep my satisfaction to myself for I knew what I had was a rare gift—the gift to change people’s minds. Before you think I’d gone completely power hungry and spun into madness, my first year at Tulane University righted any notions I had of my omniscient power when I encountered 3,000 or so other powerful beings who weren’t in the business of being told what to think, certainly not by a precocious fast-talking teenager. I reconsidered my options and realized if I stayed the course and continued being editor in chief of every media entity I worked at, I would always have “power,” for the essence of the editor’s role is to lead and influence. And, right then, I knew I had found my calling. I wanted to affect change, impact the conversation and I was going to do it with the written word. Now that was an idea I could get behind. And by all accounts, it has worked out pretty great for me. I have always had a platform. So, yes, in my own little sphere of influence and social interactions, I do hold some sway, some juice to lead or impact discussions on myriad topics, not the least of which involve US politics, my beloved Boston Red Sox or Miami Dolphins and, most especially, whatever is currently spinning the pop cultural zeitgeist. I do have a lot of opinions—educated people often do—but what I also have

Want to know a better gauge of power in 2015?: How many Instagram followers do you have? now that I didn’t as a child, is perspective and self-awareness. In short, I know when to shut the hell up. Trust me; I’m grateful for that particular skill set. It comes in handy more often than one would imagine. I didn’t get here on looks alone. (LOL) But when the topic turns to power—who has it, who wants it—my thoughts always turn to influence. In today’s complicated, right-now world that is firing on all cylinders and coming at us in a relentless treadmill of hyperlinked/YouTubed/Instagrammed/ tweeted data entry points, influence is the key to power. If a billionaire sits in his mansion in the Hamptons and counts his money and lives a discrete life or if a globally famous movie star settles down with her husband and kids in Santa Fe and lives quietly, for the purposes of “power,” they don’t have it—one’s just a rich dude, the other is an actress people like. Now, if that billionaire is Bill Gates who is quite literally using his status as world’s richest person for the betterment of the planet or the actress is Meryl Streep who has made it her mission to make her voice heard on many topics including full and equal rights for women and girls, those two have influence, those two have power. Real power. As we head straight for the jaws of another mindnumbing year-and-a-half long relentless cycle of what is known in America as “electing the next president,” watch how Hillary Clinton carries herself in relation to the clown car of Republicans hoping to oppose her in the general election. People with real power, real influence tend to carry that responsibility lightly, effortlessly—they just have it. People who are in constant need of reminding us of their supposed power, of showing us how much influence they have (Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin come to mind), trip over the weight of their nonsense. There is a difference, folks, and it’s as clear as day. I often think of that fast-talking kid in Mrs. Weprin’s

POWER RANGERS

Dalai Lama, Oprah Winfrey, third grade class and my Andy Cohen, Bill Gates and first blush of realization Kim Kardashian have massive that not only do words influence and real power. matter, but also words that came from me could matter. Luckily, I always use my so-called gift for good, but I, of course, will be very interested to see how many others who share my superpower use their gifts this campaign season. After all, power without perspective or self-awareness looks an awful lot like Donald Trump. And, as we all know, The Donald is a curious case study all unto himself. Trust me, nothing is better than witnessing true power wrapped in humility and love. Think Oprah, Dalai Lama and, yes, Taylor Swift. Real power is kind. Today, it’s not about the money—that’s so 2003. Want to know a better gauge of power in 2015?: How many Instagram followers do you have? At 10K and rising, I may not have Kim Kardashian numbers, but the game’s not over yet.

THE MOST Americans 50+ (in order)

FROM GEORGE CLOONEY TO BILL O’REILLY, AND FROM ELIZABETH WARREN TO JEFF BEZOS, WE REVEAL 2015’S DEFINITIVE RANKING OF THE MOST POWERFUL AMERICANS 50+.

BY RICHARD PÉREZ-FERIA

hat is power? Now, that was the key question we had to grapple with as we made this sure to be talked about list. It boiled down to this: Influence. If your presence, your words, your endorsement of anything moved the needle considerably in perception or tangible action—social media, legislation, business practices, innovation—you had power. Billionaires (and there are plenty of those in this country and on our list) are only wealthy people if they also don’t use their considerable resources to move the needle however they see fit. With that in mind, what follows is the NiC 50, the definitive ranking of the most powerful Americans 50+ in 2015.

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

9

SARAH JESSICA PARKER

39

One of the newest members of the 50+ club, SJP (as she’s internationally known to her millions of fans), has used her career-defining role as Carrie Bradshaw on the mega sensation Sex And The City to become not only a can’tmiss red carpet staple, but a legitimate fashion player in her own right. And if that wasn’t enough, Parker also carries the label as one of New York City’s proudest ambassadors.

10

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

50 Tom Hanks

45 Ted Turner

Has anyone ever carried the mantle of “America’s most beloved movie star” lighter than Tom Hanks? Cary Grant? Jimmy Stewart? Maybe. But for this two-time Oscar winner (Philadelphia, Forrest Gump), every performance he gives is a revelation in “everyman-hood” that leaves his movie audiences (and critics) shaking their heads in amazement. And if his thespian talents weren’t enough, Hanks’ devotion to wife, actress Rita Wilson, is also a beautiful Hollywod anomaly. Tom Hanks is the real deal.

The outspoken founder of CNN—a network that instantly changed the media landscape by introducing the ubiquitous 24-hour cable news phenomenon—has also put his considerable fortune do the talking as well, most famously his $1 billion gift to the United Nations, an organization that most of his fellow billionaires deride openly. Ted Turner is a true American original.

49 Whoopi Goldberg Though Whoopi Goldberg is one of the few people on this planet who simply doesn’t need a last name to be recognized, her tenure as moderator on The View has become decidedly less impactful. Too often relegating herself to an intractable, my-way-or-the-highway approach, Goldberg still has a daily national perch to spout her (often) contrarian opinions.

48 Kathy Griffin 2015 started out a little rough for the take-no-prisoners, celebrity-bashing funny lady (we’ll skim over the entire, albeit brief, Fashion Police fiasco), but there’s no denying when the need arises (and when does it not arise?) to skewer the Hollywood entitled celebs, Griffin remains unrivaled—by a country mile.

47 Robert Redford A true testament to how a beloved movie icon can transition gracefully in a career (from leading man, to occasional supporting player to creating one of the world’s premiere film festivals), Robert Redford gets it right. Oh, and if your independent film gets into Sundance, your own Hollywood journey can get the jump start it needs.

46 James Patterson The writer behind the global sensation Alex Cross and Michael Bennett books, Patterson was certified by Guinness World Record as the first novelist to sell more than one million e-books. His fans will make sure he’s in the black for a very long time to come.

44 Bobby Fl ay Is there a show on Food Network that Bobby Flay isn’t starring, hosting or competing? The New York City-based celebrity chef also operates highly acclaimed restaurants in his ever-expanding empire. The master of the grill and lover of Southwestern flavors is affable, relatable and talented. And, now he’s a bachelor, too.

43 Br ad Pitt Arguably the name most Americans would say if asked to name the “most handsome” movie star, Pitt has maintained that aesthetic appeal while choosing interesting roles (Moneyball, The Tree Of Life, Inglourious Basterds) and being one-half (with wife Angelina Jolie) of the world’s most glamorous (and powerful) couples.

42 Alice Waters The creator of “California cuisine”—forever changing how Americans dine out by focusing on fresh, locally harvested produce—is the chef and proprietor of Berkeley, CA institution Chez Panisse, Waters changed an entire industry: How many people have ever done that? Just one meal at Waters’ beautiful restaurant is quite literally a transformative culinary experience. Run, don’t walk.

41 Denzel Washington The two-time Academy Award winner is another of our celebrities that only require a first name to not only be instantly recognizable, but spark an attitude, a feeling. When one hears “Denzel,” one either swoons, has mad respect or both. His unflinching performance in Training Day remains a master class in controlled rage, right up there with anything Robert De Niro has ever done.

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

11

40 John McEnroe The legendary tennis player—known to most Americans as the “You! Cannot! Be! Serious!” tantrum-inducing bad boy during his playing days has transitioned to nothing less than the “voice” of the entire sport. John McEnroe’s unfiltered commentaries make even one-sided matches worth watching. A true gift.

38 Bill O’Reilly Love or hate him, Bill O’Reilly is a lot of things, but mostly he’s resilient. How he managed to survive the media onslaught about embellished or fabricated accounts about his past work (something NBC’s Brian Williams may or may not be able to do), is all the proof anyone needs to see O’Reilly’s power. He ain’t going anywhere.

36 Kevin Spacey There is no question how good Kevin Spacey is at his craft. Just prior to landing his head-exploding turn as the single-most Machiavellian Washington politician ever on American television in Netflix’s signature series, House Of Cards, Spacey was skating close to being a little too selfaware of his acting prowess. Then, in an instant, Spacey’s interpretation of Frank Underwood (along with an equally terrific Robin Wright as his wife) reminds everyone that, yes, Spacey is in fact that damn good.

35 Julia Louis-Dreyfus Emmy’s most acclaimed situation comedy television actress of all-time (even besting the comedic queen to end all queens, Lucille Ball), Julia Louis-Dreyfus has bookended her extensive career with two roles that will go down as singularly iconic—Seinfeld’s Elaine Benes and, now, Veep’s Selina Meyer. Louis-Dreyfus is a revelation on the HBO hit and the timing of such a show couldn’t have been better. She’s America’s hilarious best.

1970s with The Love Boat, Charlie’s Angels, Fantasy Island), but the fact that her shows are the single-most diverse programs on American television makes it all the more important. Kerry Washington (Scandal) and Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder) are the first AfricanAmerican women to lead primetime shows on network TV, let alone back-to-back on must-see-TV Thursday nights. Shonda Rhimes, we thank you.

30 Jack Nickl aus Is there a golf-loving American in this country who doesn’t love/respect/cherish the “Golden Bear?” Nicklaus has also been nothing but gracious in the firestorm surrounding fellow golf prodigy Tiger Woods and that man’s pursuit of Nicklaus’ record-setting 18 titles at majors (Woods currently sits at 14). Golf legend, business mogul and his sport’s greatest ambassador—we all love Jack.

29 Barbr a Streisand Without a doubt, Barbra Streisand is the last megawatt superstar currently in our midst, and, as her last album, Partners, proved when it debuted on Billboard’s Hot 200 at No.1 making Streisand the only artist in history to have a top-charting album in six consecutive decades. In short, no one has ever done more, better, longer, with more passion and acclaim than one Barbra Joan Streisand, America’s most super of superstars.

28 Clint Eastwood Rebounding nicely from that disastrous keynote address he gave memorably to an empty chair (pretending it was President Obama), Clint Eastwood re-asserted himself as a major movie director (again) by guiding the past year’s most unexpected hit, American Sniper. Though that movie has plenty of supporters and detractors, there’s no questioning the skill of this particular film director.

32 Shonda Rhimes

27 Adam Moss

It’s one thing to basically take over a network’s primetime dramatic offerings as Shonda Rhimes has done at ABC thanks to Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal and How To Get Away With Murder (Aaron Spelling carried equal sway in the

Completely unknown to 99 percent of the country, the current editor in chief of New York—and former EIC at 7 Days and The New York Times Magazine—has invisibly amassed a career of achievement that (save Vanity Fair’s

12

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

VIOLA DAVIS

37

When does an acting role seem like a political act? When Viola Davis tears into her scenes as university law professor/ accomplished attorney Annalise Keating, the fascinating and complicated protagonist in freshman hit ABC drama, How To Get Away With Murder—who just happens to be African-American. Davis, one of her generation’s most accomplished actresses, says more with 20 seconds of silence than lesser peers can in monologues. She’s that good.

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

13

TOM FORD

34

Here’s the thing, there’s little question that Tom Ford in the planet’s most stylish man, but it’s what he’s done with that title that’s so impressive. Just by entering the eyewear and fragrance categories, Ford’s offerings were instantly regarded best in class. Everyone he touches turns to magic.

14

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

Tina Brown) is unrivaled by any living person. What Moss expects/demands/delivers is nothing less than the best journalism to be found anywhere. How many editors can walk around with that claim? Exactly.

25 Jeff Bezos As if being founder and chief executive at Amazon wasn’t enough for the mogul—Forbes reports his fortune is hovering at the $40 billion mark—in 2013, Bezos purchased The Washington Post in a move that shocked everyone. Is Jeff Bezos taking over the world right under our noses?

24 Gloria Estefan How amazing must one’s life be to have a major Broadway musical about your life make it to the Great White Way? That’s exactly what’s happening with On Your Feet, a musical about Cuban-born multiple Grammy-winner Gloria Estefan’s and her husband/manager Emilio’s fascinating (and unlikely) road to global superstardom. Gloria Estefan’s success paved the way for other Hispanic artists including Ricky Martin, Shakira, Jennifer López and Enrique Iglesias. Singing it forward?

22 Bill Nye If “kill them with kindness” is a thing, then, Bill Nye “The Science Guy” should patent “destroys ignorance with facts” as his own. The climate change isn’t real roll call of geniuses have all tried to discredit Nye in front of live audiences, on television cable news shows and other FOX News lovin’ environs, all to no avail. Nye annihilates them with, yes, science, yet never descends into name-calling (that’s what the rest of us do to those head-in-the-sand intellectual giants). Nicely done, Science Guy.

21 Chris Evert What Chris Evert has done—both on and off the tennis court—is unprecedented. From the moment she broke through at her first US Open when she was a teenager in a ponytail who refused to show any emotion during her matches to current day that she’s regarded as one of the true titans of her sport, Evert has done it all with grace, humor, inclusion and moxie. She’ll always be our “Chrissie.”

HOWARD STERN

33

The so-called “shock jock” and “king of all media” is also one more thing no one seemed to notice: The best interviewer working in any medium right now. Don’t believe me? Listen to his revelatory, engaging conversations with the likes of Anderson Cooper, Madonna and Bravo’s Andy Cohen. Those three are no slouches at this game, but, in Stern’s deft hands, those celebrities and many more are revealing things they had no plans on discussing. Don’t get it twisted: Howard Stern is a great interviewer.

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

15

ROBERT DOWNEY JR.

31

Has anyone in the history of American cinema ever had the see-saw ride of Robert Downey, Jr.’s career? From “most talented actor in his generation” debut with films Bright Lights, Big City and Chaplin to complete drugaddled meltdown to a stunning (sober) resurgence and become Hollywood’s highest paid actor, thanks in large part to the Iron Man/Avengers juggernaut franchises, RDJ is on fire. And, as the newest member of the 50+ club, it’s promising to know that this talented force of nature is still burning up the box office. How’s that for clout?

19 Dan Savage If you’ve ever seen Dan Savage on CNN or Real Time With Bill Maher or The Daily Show With Jon Stewart or at your local supermarket, you’d know one thing for sure: Dan Savage is scary smart—and funny. He’s also possibly the very best guest on the topic of gay marriage and antibullying. As the creator of the wildly popular “It Gets Better” campaign (telling bullied kids that it does get better after the horrors of high school), Savage is using his humor for the greater good—and how.

18 Tim Cook How does one replace the most beloved tech innovator of all time? Quietly. As Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook has deftly pulled off a very difficult trick: Continue the explosive growth of one of the planet’s most important companies while introducing new products and improvements on other favorites (iPhone 6 Plus, anybody?) all the while paying respect to the late Steve Jobs even as Cook charts his own path. Cool beans, Mr. Cook

17 Rosie Pérez Just by having her job—she’s one of the now four panelists on long time ABC daytime ratings juggernaut, The View— Rosie Pérez is already the Hispanic woman with the biggest daily platform in America. The Oscar nominated actress hasn’t abandoned her much-acclaimed roles in film and Broadway, but with this opportunity, Pérez is lending her decidedly New York-laced voice to a wide array of current hot topics. She’s a most welcome addition to the landscape of endless chatter.

16 Bill Maher Agree with him or not—and, as of late, not every liberal is that blindly enamored by some of Maher’s views—there’s no denying that his take on the soon-to-be crowded field of presidential hopefuls will be nothing short of hilarious, appointment television.

15 Madonna There is only one “Queen of Pop” and, Madonna, with her latest chart-topping—and best—album in more than a

LISA KUDROW

26

Perhaps the most underrated of all the Friends cast— Kudrow’s take on Phoebe was the single-most daring role of the group of telegenic New York City pals—but it wasn’t until her, um, comeback in The Comeback, HBO’s one season only super meta show within a show concept that Kudrow ripped out your heart and stomped on it for good measure. It was, at times, exceedingly uncomfortable to watch the humiliation this woman had to endure, but she’s tougher than she looks and her tear-stained optimism is a thing to behold. It’s hard to describe the sublime, other worldly talent that Kudrow called upon to portray this character, suffice to say this: Do yourselves a favor and binge watch The Comeback on HBO On Demand. If Kudrow doesn’t win the Emmy for best comedic actress, there really isn’t any justice in Tinseltown. She was that good.

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

17

GEORGE CLOONEY

23

The near hysteria from fans and media alike surrounding this actor/activist’s wedding this past year hasn’t been seen since the days of Elizabeth Taylor’s and Richard Burton’s explosive union so many decades ago. In the interim, Clooney continues to flex his considerable muscle behind the causes he so strongly advocates for. It’s as if Cary Grant and Ralph Nader forged this singular American icon in the making.

18

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

DIANE VON FURSTENBERG

20

If empowering women and girls to be their best selves all the while creating one of the most important fashion brands in the world weren’t enough, Diane Von Furstenberg entered the fractured world of reality television via last year’s House Of DVF on E! The show whittles down a group of aspiring female candidates who aspire to be the next DVF “brand ambassador” but it wasn’t the (frankly) less than capable youngsters that carried the show, but the icon herself, so full of wisdom, compassion and class. It was like watching Jackie Kennedy mentor White House interns at the height of Camelot. And there’s no question that Diane Von Furstenberg is Queen of this kingdom.

MERYL STREEP

12

What is there left to say, really, about the greatest actress that ever lived? The only controversy is that Meryl Streep has “only” actually won three Academy Awards while being nominated a head exploding 19 times (12 of those noms were clear victories for Streep who was robbed because of what I call “brilliance fatigue” by Oscar voters). But now Streep is re-emerging as a dedicated and public advocate for causes she most believes in, particularly surrounding women and girls’ rights. Don’t mess with her—she’s Meryl Streep for a reason.

decade; Rebel Heart (and world tour) has once again proven why she’s maintained her status as the single-most talkedabout pop star in our midst. Her vocals and songwriting on the new album have benefitted from her maturity. There’s no stopping this woman—thank goodness. We can’t even imagine a world without Madonna.

14 Michelle Obama As a nation we’ve been privileged to have a wide array of classy, well-intentioned First Ladies as of late—from Jacqueline Kennedy to Laura Bush—but no one could have prepared us for the special brand of sass, contemporary realness and passionate activist otherwise known as Michelle Obama. Be it raising money and awareness for US military families or tackling head-on this country’s childhood obesity epidemic, FLOTUS still has to raise two young daughters in the world’s biggest fishbowl—and, yes, even win the crown of best dancer to ever occupy the White House. I mean, have you seen her Doogie?

13 Bill Clinton How Bill Clinton supports his wife’s efforts for the presidency may be the single-best and, ultimately, most crucial of all of the possible intriguing subplots forming as the field of candidates emerge. Bill Clinton’s strengths are so overwhelming (he memorably rescued President Obama’s second term with his soaring, scorching speech at the 2012 Democratic National Convention ensuring Obama’s election win), but his negatives are ever lurking. This is the time to, once again, keep your eye on the first President Clinton. How could you not?

11

Arianna Huffington

The tale of how a well-educated, television-ready Greek woman conquered nothing less daunting than the world of media itself is a story worth telling. Arianna Huffington is a force of nature and her creation, the globally significant The Huffington Post, has made her one of the genuinely great bastions protecting America from the relentless FOX News Channel right-wing onslaught. It’s quite a site to see. We’ll say this slowly—don’t mess with Arianna Hffington: Consider yourself warned.

10 Ellen DeGeneres The things about Ellen DeGeneres (the influencer) to admire are 1) she’s a tireless activist for full equality across the board all the while doing it with her unrivaled big name Hollywood allies and plenty of humor; 2) you could see an old episode of her eponymous daytime talk show from, say, seven years ago or last week’s, and you’d have a hard time figuring out which one was the more recent one. Ellen stays in her (ever widening) lane and American can’t get enough of her. We know we can’t.

9

Jeb Bush

The Bush most thought would be first (after his father) to ascend to the White House, Jeb Bush, the popular former two-term governor of Florida, is poised to become a viable (“adult”) alternative to the ever-growing “clown car” of GOP hopefuls (Ted Cruz very much included). It’s a long way away from November 2016 election day, but one has to know that this Bush brother will somehow be right in the middle of the conversation for a while to come.

8

Maria Celeste Arr arás

The single most-watched Hispanic woman on Spanish language television, Maria Celeste Arrarás, is a force of nature and much beloved by her millions of viewers. As co-host (with MSNBC’s José Diaz-Balart) of the nightly national news on Telemundo as well as host and managing editor of her top-rated daily news/entertainment hybrid show, Al Rojo Vivo, Maria Celeste (as she’s universally known) will be a powerful voice as the nation’s Hispanic issues take center stage during this next election cycle. Don’t take this proud Puerto Rican native lightly—she’s been on top for more than a decade for a reason.

7

Elizabeth Warren

For liberals, the senior senator from Massachusetts is nothing short of Mother Teresa dressed up as a former Harvard professor. Though she insists repeatedly that she, in fact, does not want to be president, her influence as a consumer protection advocate—and chief irritant to the “too big to fail” financial giants on Wall Street—make Warren an undeniable leader right where she is.

6

Dr . Mehmet Oz

Somewhere along the way as of late, some of the shine has been scuffed up a bit off of Dr, Mehmet Oz’s can-dono-wrong armor. But, still, “America’s Doctor” remains the single-most influential person with a medical degree in this nation. And with healthcare still at the fore of just about everybody’s real life and political agendas, Dr. Oz is whom millions of us continue to turn for no-nonsense advice. And he does practice what he preaches.

5

Indr a Nooyi

As Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer of PepsiCo, the second largest food and beverage business in the world, Indra Nooyi is the very embodiment of the American dream. How this Indian-born titan of business became an American, and rose to become one of the most powerful women on the planet is a testament to her “can-doness” and her life embodies a lead by example principle that surely inspires millions of young girls and women around the globe. Remember this woman’s name.

Charles/David Koch

Easily the most feared/admired/reviled brothers in recent American history, billionaires Charles and David Koch have made it their mission in life to elect as many Republicans as possible—anything less would be deemed a failure. As much sway FOX News has in the public discourse for rightwing candidates in a public forum, the Koch brothers prefer to do their work shrouded in mystery and obfuscation. Only when they speak of their generous contributions to some of Manhattan’s most important cultural institutions are they happy to talk, but ask them why they support any and all Tea Party-loving candidates and agendas, they clam up. Doesn’t make them any less influential—in fact, quite the opposite is true.

Enjoying her first full year of undisputed ratings and financial success running her cable television network, OWN, Oprah Winfrey remains the one person on Earth that other celebrities remain in awe of and inspired by. Her mantra of positivity, kindness, forgiveness and candor

mixed with self-deprecation has been an intoxicating (and most effective) approach to building an empire. Oprah is just Oprah, and she’s helping us in immeasurable ways.

Hill ary Clinton

Poised to break through those last stubborn shards of glass, the only reason Hillary Clinton hasn’t already been President of the United States six years ago was Barack Obama represented an unstoppable movement. This time around, don’t count her out and we fully expect to witness the first woman ascend to the highest office in the land. Who’s going to stop her? Ted Cruz? LOL

BILL GATES

The single-most powerful/important man on this list came to it in a classic story arch—from technology titan/bully to genuine American hero doing everything in his vast power to legitimately help the world. Putting the legend (and mind-blowing fortune) Gates created with Microsoft, it’s his work—alongside his equally dynamic wife, Melinda Gates—on their foundation that boasts both of their names that has resulted in a seismic shift in not only how we view the roles of billionaires in our society, but, importantly, how they view themselves. Gates has encouraged his fellow billionaires to consider giving up significant parts of their fortunes to help the world and a wonderfully surprising number of them have already signed on. Bill Gates deserves this slot for showing the world that with great power (and wealth) comes great responsibility. Bill Gates is the living embodiment of responsible global citizen. A Nobel Prize may yet be in order. For now, he’ll have to settle for sitting atop Now It Count’s list of 50 most powerful Americans. It’s quite an honor indeed.

henever people take a trip to a casino, they always bone up on their strategy on how they’re going to be beat the house. If they’re playing blackjack, some will buy a book on the best strategies they can employ to win the most amount of money. When these folks come to Vegas and they’re paying for a meal or buffet, if they give the cashier a $100 bill, they’re expecting change. After all, it’s their money, they wouldn’t think about giving a casino their money that they’re entitled to get back. So there it is, people follow strategies to try and maximize what they earn and they would never leave on the table money that belongs to them.

Then why do Americans do that all the time when it comes to Social Security? Millions of people are ignoring what opportunities they have to maximize what they get in Social Security by either ignorance or lack of understanding. With many people having saved little throughout the course of their lifetime in their 401(k) or in their bank accounts, Social Security is going to be an important part of their retirement income. When the No.1 filing age for Social Security continues to be 62, the experts say that shows most people aren’t that interested in hearing how to get more money by waiting until they’re 66 or 70. Why is that? The experts say one reason is people need the money because they lost their jobs or because of the physical nature of their work forced them to retire at 62. Some pick that date,

For those in their 60s, their life expectancy is a lot of sense that people rush and ta however, because they think they’re supposed to retire at 62 because they’ve worked hard their entire life. “I think the other half is misinformation,” says Andy Landis, author of Social Security: The Inside Story, a series started in 1993. “I see this all of the time. All the comments that come in about I wanted to get mine at 62 before it went broke or before I died.” For those in their 60s, their life expectancy is close to 20 years, which doesn’t seem to make a lot of sense that people rush and take less than they otherwise should. “The odds are you’re going to live long enough to make it worthwhile to postpone Social Security and Social Security has full funding until 2033 and so it’s not going to go broke in the next two years,” Landis says. “I think it’s misguided behavior to say I got to take it now before it goes broke or before I die. The odds are you’re going to get more money by waiting.” In his talks and seminars that he gives on Social Security, Landis says he will run into many people who say they just need the income. It’s hard to argue with people who give that as their reason because their strategies are limited, he says. “It would be great if they can find a part-time job that would pay as much as their Social Security, but even though they have a part time job, they may still may need more income,” Landis says. “They have to pay their bills. I can’t argue with that. For the average person, that’s what it’s there for, a retirement security. Go for it if you need it.” The problem is those who take it at age 62 are getting 75 percent of what they would have earned at age 66, the full retirement age. By waiting to 66, they’re getting 33 percent more money and by waiting until 70 you’re getting 76 percent more. For those who don’t need to rush and take it at 62, there are ways to maximize what you earn in Social Security and here are the best ways to do it:

THOSE ON SOCIAL SECURITY AT 62 AND SUSPENDING AT 66 For those who took their Social Security at 62 and are having regrets for having done so or their personal circumstances have changed and they can wait to take benefits, they can suspend their payments at 66 and wait until age 70 to start picking them up again when it’s the

26

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

equivalent in payments if you had waited until 66 in the first place. It’s actually considered 99 percent of your full retirement Social Security benefit. By suspending and waiting four years to pull the trigger, that wipes away that penalty for early filing. Other than suspending at 66, people have a year after they file for Social Security to change their mind and it’s like they never filed. That happens often when many people get good jobs after they filed for Social Security. If you get a job and the pay is less than $15,720 a year, you’re not going to lose any of your Social Security benefits even though you’re required to report it to Social Security. If it’s over that amount, some of it will be taken away and you’re likely to get some of it, the experts say. When you turn 66, Landis says, there’s a computation where they subtract the months that you had your payments withheld because of work. “Let’s say they take six of my payments away because I got a nice job and when I’m 66 they recompute may payment and it’s like they moved my application date six months later and therefore I get a payment that’s six months higher,” Landis says. “It’s not huge, but it would be a three percent increase in Social Security if they took six of my payments away. Over the years, if I’m working on or off or steady and they’re taking the rest of my payments away, I get a big fat raise when I’m 66. It’s as simple as that.” That’s when Social Security stops penalizing people who are working and taking Social Security.

WAITING UNTIL 66 or 70 to START TAKING SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS For people who start their benefits at 62, the experts say that while it’s 75 percent of your full retirement benefit, the reduction is actually more than that. The reason is if you waited until 66, the monthly benefit would increase by 33 percent. “It’s a 33 percent increase above the inflation rate guaranteed by the US government and with survivor benefits and cost of living protection,” Landis says. “When you throw all of that together and you look at it as an investment, that’s a pretty good guaranteed deal compared to what I might get in the market.” For those who are debating about taking Social Security

close to 20 years, which doesn’t seem to make ake less than they otherwise should. at 66 and opt for 70 instead, if they were set to earn $2,000 a month at 66, which is slightly above average, that would have grown to $2,640 a month at age 70. “I don’t know how often you have gotten a $600 a month raise during your career,” Landis says. “That’s a pretty big raise when you think that’s coming for the rest of my life and rest of my spouse’s life and it’s going to go up with inflation and it has tax benefits. That’s a $600 a month raise I might be willing to wait four years to nab. It will take me until 82½ to make it worthwhile so I have to have life expectancy.” But it’s not just about that person if they’re married. Women tend to live longer than their husbands, and if the husband has higher career earnings than her, she’ll be able to draw from his Social Security benefit if he dies before her. The experts say the lesson is there’s value added if you’re married and you’re the principal earner. If you use the example of the $640 extra a month earned by waiting from 66 to 70 to take the benefit and the husband dies at 85, which is about three years longer than expected. That’s $23,000 more that the husband earned than he would have by taking the benefit at 66. If the wife, who in this example is five years younger than the husband, lives to her expectancy of 91, that’s an extra $61,000 for a total of more than $84,000 by waiting until 70. That’s even greater for someone waiting to take Social Security at 70 instead of 62, which is a long time for many people to wait. For someone who’s full benefit is $2,000 a month at 66, it translates to $1,500 a month at age 62. By waiting until 70, that benefit increases by $1,140 a month. For a single person who lives to 85½, that translates into $40,000 extra by waiting those eight years and with the wife living until 91, as in the previous example, that’s an extra $109,000 for the couple.“Everyone wants to get their Social Security before they die,” Landis says. “I don’t want to die without getting it. This is a way to stick it to the government for a $100,000 extra by postponing your Social Security. That might motivate some people to wait.”

E

xperts say the other option for people to consider is for those who own their own home, to use the equity in their home as part of a reverse mortgage to generate

monthly income. That’s one effective way to bridge the gap of needed income while your Social Security benefits grow by waiting to 66 and 70. “That’s an interesting strategy,” Landis says. “If I have equity in the house and I can take a reverse mortgage, that’s one way to bridge to 70 or 66 or whatever you can do. That’s not a bad way.”

FILE AND SUSPEND The experts says there’s much more awareness about filing and suspending these days than there was a couple of years ago because of all of the articles written on the subject. The problem is that awareness has been limited to a small group of people are the most active in learning about Social Security in the first place. If your goal is to wait until 70 to get the maximum benefit, it doesn’t mean you have to wait until that age to start benefiting from Social Security. Starting at age 66, people can suspend their Social Security payment anytime during those four years and allow the benefit to grow by 32 percent by age 70. “If I’m the principal earner in the family and I die, then my spouse gets whatever I was getting. If I wait and get a higher payment that pays me during my lifetime—but also pays her during her lifetime,” Landis says. “I like to say it’s the gift that keeps on giving for two lifetimes.” What happens is when a couple is working and both have good full-time jobs that pay well and both want to continue to work, neither takes Social Security and they shouldn’t. The reason is Social Security taxes benefits earned above $15,780 if you haven’t yet turned 66. “What I see people leaving on the table is between the ages of 66 to 70 and I have talked to a bunch of those people in the past weeks where they are 67 or 68 and they’ll say I’m waiting until 70 because I like my job,” Landis says. “I’m working and waiting. That’s cool, but did you know your spouse could be getting a payment right now? They’re always blown away by that.” Landis relayed a story about a couple he came across while giving a seminar in Los Angeles. Both are highly paid professionals who were both turning 66 but decided they would wait to take Social Security until they turned 70 so they could get 132 percent of their benefits. The

Something that needs to be communicated t Social Security and still get yo

couple thought that was a great option for them until they learned they were leaving money on the table. One of them could file and suspend and the other could get a spousal payment for the next four years. They contacted the Social Security Administration and learned by taking that payments, that’s an extra $60,000 they wouldn’t have known to have taken. Both were set to earn $2,500 a month based on their benefit. If one of them takes a 50 percent spousal payment for the next four years, that’s $1,250 a month that will add up to $60,000 plus inflation. “That’s a lot of money. That’s an extreme case, of course, because they’re high-income earners,” Landis says. Even if the Social Security is $1,500, some $1,000 less than the Los Angeles couple, that’s $750 a month and $36,000 for a retirement that people would forgo because they didn’t know any better. “That’s the kind of thing most people still don’t know, but more and more people are getting tuned into,” Landis says. “They say what’s this trick about my spousal payments? They kind of have an idea because they have seen an article or heard from a friend. They don’t have it clear. That’s something that needs to be communicated to people working past 66: You can still get Social Security and still get your age 70 payment coming in.” The spouse has to be at least 62 to start the payment. If the spouse is working, they’re subject to the penalty of

28

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

earning too much. For those who earn too much, Social Security would make them file under their own benefits if the spouse is between 62 and 66. This Social Security benefit works best for a non-working spouse.

KEEP WORKING BEFORE TAKING BENEFIT When it comes to people trying to figure out that bridge to fill in the gap between 66 and 70 when people can maximize their Social Security benefits, Landis jokes that the best way is to be rich, but for most people it’s enough to just have a job. “The best way for people is to work an extra couple of years and they’ll moan and groan and say I don’t want to and I got laid off,” Landis says. “If they have a job that they can handle for the next few years, that’s the No.1 way to increase retirement security. It’s not just Social Security.” By working, you increase your Social Security benefit because it’s based on the highest 35 years of your earnings and in many cases people make the most money in their lifetime prior to retirement. “Your Social Security will go up and you’re not draining savings so your savings will be higher,” Landis says. “Hopefully if you’re working you’re saving in your 401(k) plan or IRA or whatever you can do so you’re increasing your savings instead of drawing them down. If there’s a pension at work and that’s iffy, your pension at work with higher earnings should give

to people working past 66: You can still get our age 70 payment coming in.

you a higher pension, too. There are so many ways you’re fattening up the retirement picture by working even if it’s a few more years. If you can swing it, work an extra year or two or five. It’s different for everybody, but do that math for yourself and you’ll probably find it’s not just Social Security but all kinds of ways you’re making yourself financially better off.”

WORK AND TAKE SOCIAL SECURITY If you opt to take Social Security while working under the age of 66, then if you earn more than $15,720, for every $2 you earn over that limit, the government takes $v1 out of your Social Security. “I’m still coming out ahead even if I earn more than that limit because they’re only taking half of the dollars over the limit away from my Social Security,” Landis says. “I’d have to earn a lot of money before they take away all 12 of my Social Security payments. It’s usually around $50,000 or so. I could have a pretty good full time job making around $40,000 and still get some of my Social Security for the year to supplement my income. Even for those who are under 66 who are working, sometimes it makes sense to take the Social Security early.” The month people turn 66 Social Security has no penalty for any earnings, and people can have their full paychecks plus Social Security. “A lot of people start their Social Security at 66 even if

they’re working,” Landis says. Landis says he knows a person who was working at 66 when he took his Social Security at his 100 percent benefit and took the money from the government and banked it. He had his paycheck coming in and at 68 he retired. For the two previous years he started his benefits, he earned $2,000 a month and banked $50,000 he used a down payment for a retirement home, Landis says. “That’s one way to use it and or you could raise your lifestyle a little bit or you can use it as a supplement because your paycheck isn’t as high as it used to be,” Landis says. “Maybe you’re slowing down or gone to part time or switched jobs because of job loss.” Landis says most people shouldn’t start their Social Security at 66 because they know there isn’t a penalty for not working. “These people aren’t fully aware of the rules of what can happen after 66 or they may not have done the math or maybe they’re of the mindset that ‘I don’t know how long I’m going to live and I just want my Social Security to get going’,” Landis says. You can go to www.ssa.gov to create and account and learn how much your monthly Social Security benefit is going to be and plan their strategy accordingly. Click here for more NiC stories:

RICHARD

JAY-ALEXANDER The Broadway Legend Opens Up RICHARD JAY-ALEXANDER HAS SEEN IT ALL AND WORKED WITH EVERYONE WHEN IT COMES TO BROADWAY AND MUSICAL THEATER. HERE, FINALLY, HE’S IN THE MOOD TO CHAT.

U

BY RICHARD PÉREZ-FERIA

nique doesn’t quite cover it. When my thoughts turned to my dear friend, Richard Jay-Alexander, I was amazed how many adjectives rushed to mind at once. Yes, Jay-Alexander is a legendary musical theater director—a real Broadway baby—who has collaborated with every mega superstar diva who can carry a tune and set foot on the Great White Way (Barbra Streisand, Bette Midler, Bernadette Peters, Betty Buckley, Kristin Chenoweth and on and on), but there’s so much more than that. Richard Jay-Alexander is incredibly accomplished, of course, but he’s also

38

strikingly, unapologetically still accomplishing. He wants more. And then he wants some more after that. The effect of that ethos when one first meets JayAlexander is to either gravitate towards his energy and relish in his unbridled enthusiasm, or take a step back and assess this fast-talking firebrand. Best part? He pays no mind either way: There are things to do and people to see—and that’s why I’m happy to report that I drink from the overflowing Jay-Alexander fountain of “everything is awesome.” For more than a decade, Jay-Alexander ran iconic Broadway producer Cameron Mackintosh’s North American operations

(MARTINI GLASS) BIBI ANDRADE

as Executive Director, New York helping produce Les Misérables, Cats, The Phantom Of The Opera, Miss Saigon and many others. After decades of directing live performances and producing scores of records—he’s worked with everyone from Ricky Martin to Johnny Mathis and Lea Salonga to Il Divo—it’s his decade-long association with the planet’s greatest star, Barbra Streisand, that has punctuated his latest career highlight. Babs and RJA were made for each other. Though I could delineate in great detail how this Syracuse, NY native with a Cuban mom and SpanishAmerican dad would fall in love with musical theater after seeing a performance of Bye Bye Birdie as a kid arrived in the world’s greatest city and came to embody and become synonymous with musical theater itself, I’d rather let the man speak for himself. A minute into our conversation, you, too, will see why Broadway loves Richard Jay-Alexander, and how Richard Jay-Alexander loves it right back. That’s why so many adjectives flew at me at once. Richard Jay-Alexander has a lot to say—and it’s riveting. You’ve worked with so many of the world’s greatest stars: If you close your eyes, what has been the singlemost thrilling career moment that involved a superstar? There have been many. I mean, after a rehearsal period, the excitement, the nerves and, then, hearing an overture for Bernadette Peters at Carnegie Hall or watching Bette Midler fly in on a horse or watching Barbra Streisand come up from under the stage… Each and every one has been absolutely thrilling! But, honestly, over the entire 40-year stretch of my career, so far, it would have to be Opening Night of Les Misérables at the Broadway Theatre, on March 12, 1987. I was the Executive Producer and the Associate Director and I was so unbelievably excited that the night before, I didn’t sleep a wink. Not one. I was like a kid on Christmas Eve. And, boy, oh, boy, that was some spectacular and truly a historic night. What’s your approach to directing a musical concert or event? Is there a blank canvas moment you build from or do you

SILVER FOXES A silver-mained

start with an idea in your head? Richard Jay-Alexander No two stars are alike. No two toasts life in Miami Beach; (below) with careers are alike, but one of the Shirley MacLaine. things that make me different is that I understand the career of the person I’m facing. My knowledge of their music and career choices is instrumental in building the house. It’s the truest form of collaboration and storytelling and it always comes directly from the performer and is adapted for the stage and for staging. Everything matters: Clothes, hair, make-up, lighting, staging, arrangements, colors—everything. When I’m in this mode of thinking, I always wish an audience could be me for a moment, alone in the room, with a mesmerizing talent, a force, a person so special to truly understand how we care so much and how much work goes into what we bring them and what they’ll see on the stage. Those quiet, intense, intelligent, caring moments are where the “magic” gets born. A lot of performers say the love the process. Trust me, they don’t. But the people I’ve been lucky enough to work with, never stop giving, working or caring and that’s what makes me work even harder. The satisfaction is indescribable. OK, tell us some incredible celebrity anecdotes—you of all people know this:

How did your Cuban-born parents influence your life, your work ethic, your “get on with it” of it all? That’s an interesting question. My Mom was born in Havana. My Dad was American, born of Spanish parents. He fell madly in love with her, in Cuba; and the rest, as they say, is history. I spend a lot of time in Cuba, up until 1959, when we moved into our home in Syracuse, NY. I was six years old. I’m one of five children. I grew up around a lot of love and support. My Dad was a CPA and educator, heading the Business Administration Department at LeMoyne College, a Jesuit university in Syracuse. Education was very important in our family and all of us went to college— it’s a family must. I was Broadway crazed and my Dad had no idea about that and was worried, but applied his knowledge to me, specifically, and allowed me so many opportunities. During college, he even drove me to the American Midwest to do Summer stock theater. When I think about it, it actually makes me cry. My Mom? Well, she just loved everything I did—my biggest fan. In college, when I played “Toby” in The Medium (he’s a mute gypsy boy) and I got shot, my Mom said to everyone, “Well, I guess Dickie isn’t gonna sing in this one.” That story still makes me laugh out loud. When my Mom saw my first apartment in Manhattan on East 94th and 2nd Avenue she cried and told me to come home. My rent was $135 a month. The year was 1975.

month I was turning 40 and I was working on Stephen Sondheim’s Putting It Together at Manhattan Theatre Club. I was nervous to meet Streisand, of course, and was the only one there, as neither her long-time manager, Marty Erlichman, nor her A&R guy, Jay Landers, had arrived yet. Streisand came down the stairs and said, “Hi, I’m Barbra.” I laughed and re-bounded with, “Hi, no kidding.” It was pretty fantastic. Later that night, Barbra was scheduled to come see the show, which starred Julie Andrews and also there that night were Amy Irving and Liza Minnelli. Yeah, so it was one of those kind of nights. If you could ask for a “second take” on a moment in your career, what would that be? Have you ever thought of that? That is such an interesting thought to ponder, Richard. I’ve had so many “moments” in my life and career and I can’t think of anything I would do over or differently because the “moments” are the “moments.” But, thinking at this moment, I’d say all those types of thoughts would be directed at my Mom and Dad. I have no regrets with regard to my relationships with them. We shared a lot of love. But, that stated, due to the nature of my work, I was the “least show up” member of the family over the years, but always copped to it and it was never the basis of any trouble or ill will. I was there as often as possible. We just lost them both over the last year, so it’s still a little weird to not be able to pick up the phone and call either one of them. They were always interested in everything we all did and everywhere we went or what was happening. They were the greatest parents ever and allowed each of us to be the best we could be. Who do you want to work with next? I assume you have a short wish list.

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

Gosh, I never think like that. Opportunities always present themselves and then, if the artist or the material, interests me, I sign on. Just this past year, I’ve enjoyed the hell out of working with Norm Lewis, Deborah Voigt and Well-Strung. Each of them so fulfilling and satisfying in very different ways. I have a lot of different “departments” to me. And, yes, it’s complicated.

The two people who intrigue me that I haven’t worked with are Cher and Madonna. I’ve met them both socially, but what they do and what I do are two very different things. Also, it’s sheer vanity, but I feel like I could teach Ms. Ciccone how to act and connect A to B to C. It frustrates me so, but, if you look at our collective love affair with her over all of these years, we’ve seen her in blinks and bytes and edits for decades, in videos. I’ve always enjoyed her concerts, but I just feel that there’s more in there to be mined. But, like I said, it could just be my vanity. Describe yourself in three adjectives. Passionate, Committed, Honest—to a fault. The world is scary because... Decency seems to have left the planet. It upsets me that people aren’t polite and decent to each other. Life seemed simpler growing up—manners, respect, good behavior and hard work. Everything is so fast today and people don’t seem to want to learn or work toward goals. Everything is geared toward instant gratification and it should be geared to plain old decency and respect. The world is beautiful because... When you least expect it, you can find yourself moved to your core by the simplest of things. I know that I’ve been blessed and live a life that has afforded me certain privileges. I never take it for granted and I always try to find ways to help people and give back. What would be your fantasy job if you achieved it, you’d say: “Now, I’ve done it all?” Oh my gosh, Richard, I love this question! I’d love to helm a Broadway show from scratch. That would truly be something. No workshops—straight to Broadway. Do it once and do it right. Also, I’d love to do a movie musical, which I know I could deliver and solve what’s missing from so many. Sounds simple, but it’s actually difficult and either you know your way around a musical or you don’t. It’s like a language. Not everyone understands and too much realism has been creeping in. Musicals need to float two inches off the ground.

APPLAUSE! APPLAUSE!

Jay-Alexander surrounded by Broadway royalty, Joel Grey, Bernadette Peters and Elaine Stritch; (opposite) with Glee and Spring Awakening star, Lea Michele, in Hollywood.

Who’s the most underrated star working today? And, of course, overrated? Gosh, Richard! [Laughs] Answering this question— however you slice it—can only get me in trouble! Can I plead the 5th? However, each category would have a few choice names in it. Trust me! [Laughs] In five years, Richard Jay-Alexander is doing what, where and with whom? Richard, you’re very big on the great questions! [Laughs] I’m at a very interesting chapter of my life. I’ve achieved more than I ever could have imagined, so it’s sort of all icing on the cake now. I do pick and choose my jobs and work. It’s never work if you love what you’re doing and are genuinely interested, engaged and challenged. But I do have some Bucket List items and want to do them while I’m in great health and can still be active and enjoy life. I’ve traveled the globe for work, but there are a few places I haven’t been. Argentina is currently at the top of the list as is going back to my beloved Cuba. In five years, maybe that book will be finished and I’ll be doing a book tour. I hope to see you at your local book seller, Richard, if there are any left! [Laughs] Click here for more NiC stories:

GORGEOUS

SEASONS CHANGE

Holding back the years no longer has to be a Fall-to-Winter ritual.

THE BEAUTY RESULTS ARE IN: HERE ARE THE EDITOR’S PICKS FOR THE VERY BEST IN CLASS FROM HAIR CARE TO MAKEUP, OUR EXPERT CHOOSES THE EDITOR’S PICKS YOU SHOULD CONSIDER. LIKE, SERIOUSLY. BY MARCO MEDRANO

epresenting and writing for the 50+ demographic isn’t only a joy, it’s a responsibility. Think about it: Two decades ago we embarked on harsh chemical peels and jagged, granular buffing treatments that may have left us, well, stuck at home for days. Fast-forward to right now: Exposed or indoor UV-vulnerable skin requires more

46

NiC MAY/JUNE 2015

“bio-exfoliation.” The use of less abrasive micro-derm products doesn’t mean less effective; in fact, some of my favorite pro-gorgeous, quiet riots are daily bio-exfoliator serums and creams that do a little each day and night, consistently with little to no negative signs of their hero components staving off the years. Yet, our assertive (yet gentle) pro-gorgeous regimens still require a stellar

UV protector that doesn’t clog pores and hopefully has an “active” that lifts, brightens or provides a light foundational coverage. BB or CC lotions and creams often have all the serums, lifting moisturizers, light tint coverage, liquid powders and SPF—all-in-one. YEP. Ask or read the instructions, as some of these all-in-ones get applied at different stages of your routine (not always last, anymore). Yep. That’s right. I’ve been in a research-intensive mood as of late (could be the warmer weather), I spent several eighthour writing days in Moisture Bound Sleeping Recovery Masque (Amore Pacific) and a few eight-hour writing nights in Skin Caviar Luxe Sleep Mask (La Prairie). But seriously, holding back the years no longer has to be a Fall-to-Winter ritual. And I’ve hand-picked and tested some serious skincare and beauty products that range from unbelievably affordable to wish list worthy, but are tremendous nonetheless. Shall we? Amore Pacific skincare not only feels indulgent, it really is curing and penetrable—they even have their own millions of acres of eco-friendly green tea forests. A few of my favorites? Green Tea Seed Treatment Oil, Time Response Skin Renewal Mist (amazing) and Moisture Bound Refreshing Hydra Gel—a rich, anti-aging semimatte crème-gel for humid or warmer seasons. Time Response Intensive Skin Renewal Ampoules restores optimal youth to skin as a month-long, 4-vial cure. Moisture Bound Sleeping Recovery Masque penetrates deep for hydrated, dewy suppleness. Time Response Intensive Hand Crème is matte, yet has a special agent that lets you wash your hands without losing all the applied moisture. You read that correctly. And Moisture Bound Lip Treatment is made from Bamboo Sap (the strongest and quickest regenerative plant in the

world), providing a yummy, lush all-day lip therapy and lipstick primer. A true trailblazer in the healthy skincare arena is Tata Harper. I’ve wanted to use, cover and immerse myself, umm, my skin, in this über-green, highly potent beauty brand. As their own manufacturers, Tata Harper’s concentrated formulas are “100% natural, non-toxic ingredients 100% of the time”. Pretty simple. Very powerful. A little goes a longer way. I picked and sampled a few hero standouts: Not entirely inexpensive at $365, Elixir Vitae is considered the ultimate nano-weight un-wrinkler, topically delivering the visual effect of an injectable. Concentrated Brightening Serum effectively illuminates, brightens and corrects the appearance of skin tone for a balanced, radiant complexion (including future hyperpigmentation) while counteracting the visual effects of daily collagen degradation. Wow. Replenishing Nutrient Complex is a lightweight facial oil serum comprised of micronutrients, antioxidants, vitamins and minerals for your daily dose of environmental protection. Rejuvenating Serum is just that, as a complete anti-aging collagen treatment. Coming out of beauty hibernation? Rebuilding Moisturizer (matte finish) delivers while Boosted Contouring Serum acts as a daily anti-gravity treatment facelift resulting in a tighter, smoother face. And Be Fierce Sheer Lip Treatment is the perfect lip cure alone or before lipstick or gloss. Suki Skincare is another stellar natural brand to look for—also being a forerunner in the synthetic-free cosmeceutical product world— appropriate for even the most sensitive skin types. “Tested safe for pregnant women, nursing moms and babies.” Exfoliate Foaming Cleanser is terrific, but also doubles as Suki’s 2 Step UltraSoft Lip Kit along with Formula Lip Care. GORGEOUS proprietary fruit enzymes and white willow extracts while Renewal Bio-Resurfacing Facial Peel is a gentle giant for every day. MoistureRich Brightening Mask is another way to cure dullness and spots while hydrating and Radical Results Youth Serum is perfect for a daily or when rebounding from a treatment cycle. Take it from someone who knows, it’s a truly great line. Being very conscious of what goes in and on my body, I’m no purist and am just as susceptible to a fistful of M&M’s or Double Stuf Oreo’s. Enter MEG 21. I found this concise skincare line rich, effective and relevant—meaning, very few brands focus on “glycation” which is foods that break down as sugar in our bodies and in our skin from within causing deeper inflammation and oxidative stress on our faces. This includes hidden sugars such as corn syrup solids in pasta sauces, etc. With Gooseberry Extract, Supplamine (patented), Comfrey Root Extract and more, I found Cell Therapy Antioxidant Boost to be at the core of their beautifying process (love). MEG 21’s Smooth Radiance Face Treatment and Advanced Formula for neck, chest and upper arms are real problem solvers. Their Age-Defying Hand Treatment is another item I can’t live without during the cold, crackly-cuticle winter months! Some people put on expensive undergarments or wear a rare fragrance on days they have to elevate their selfconfidence. Truth? “high and tight” is a La Prairie day if I ever saw one. Their newest, most scientifically advanced anti-wrinkle booster serum launches now—Anti-Aging Rapid Response Booster (1.7 oz.) promises visible results in two weeks using one of the most advanced delivery systems I’ve ever seen. I layer it with a cult favorite I could not live without, Skin Caviar Liquid Lift. As the season heats up, the perfect companion is La Prairie’s lightweight powerhouse

Anti-Aging Emulsion SPF 30. Kick off the day (or night) lifted and unlined! I was cautious about introducing another caviar line as most have minimal percentages. Caviar of Switzerland, on the other hand, uses certified caviar extract comprised of non-fertilized sturgeon eggs farmed in France. Similar to human skin, caviar has a cell format proven to provide unparalleled nourishment and mineralization to the skin. The helper ingredients of this brand are topshelf; Resveratrol, active enzymes, collagen synthesis-stimulating peptides and hyaluronic acid, to name a few. Cellular Repair Serum, 24h Regeneration Cream and Intensive Eye Cream are sure to enforce a pro-gorgeous regimen. One of my favorite brands, especially when brightening, is Repêchage. A new edition to their Biolight line is Frost Bright Eye Contour Gel. I L-O-V-E their Brightening Daytime Protection Cream because it’s easy. Watermelon extracts and mineral protection from damaging rays make it an apply-andrun out the door product! And the following items greatly turn back the clock in record time: RAPIDEX® Marine Exfoliator with PhytoMarine Actives uses giant, revolutionary, disposable swabs, while One-Minute Exfoliating Mask uses oil controlling seaweed, astringent lemongrass and fresh cooling cucumber for treat and go results. Using their own seaweed manufacture plants, this made in the USA dynamo provides all-star results and value. Repêchage. Hair and sulfate-free products (my first preference) have been a hot button beauty world topic for some time. Then we find out that many brands use stronger chemicals to remove sulfates from their products and labels. Confusing, right? Aside from that, my test is whether I can get my hands through my hair after shampooing. So when

I saw a respected, luxury brand such as Schwarzkopf Professional Hair Care co-develop a decadent hair care line (with ex-supermodel Claudia Schiffer) exclusively for Walmart, I thought no way! After trying it, I thought right on! ULTÎME. I shampooed and conditioned with it, loved it and kept it. Each product has a specific use that works effectively. The intense Omega Supreme Repair Hair Treatment is spa worthy, while the Sublime Hair Beautifier 11-in-1 and Daily Oil Elixir leave-ins make hair silky, shiny and bouncy. Attention Walmart shoppers! You’ve got a real winner on your hands. Time for a little color; I’m very impressed by the

richness of the Charlotte Tillbury line of cosmetics. The compacts, lipsticks, pencils and palettes are dubbed luxury for a reason. The colors are robust and saturated looking as only a starlet would consider donning. Visit The Glamour Muse, The Rebel or Some Like It Hot pieces and you’ll understand. Give it a try. It’s hard to improve on perfection, but Kevyn Aucoin cosmetics just raised the bar with perfected formulations, royalty packaging and dozens of DIY scenarios for your every mood— online. Example: Using Celestial Liquid Lighting with The Sensual Skin Enhancer and applied with their

legendary The Foundation Brush produces radiantly flawless skin. Of course, if you want to forever perfect your makeup application skills, Making Faces, The Art Of Makeup or Face Forward books will promise lifelong tips that can allow you to be a chameleon whenever you or your next event image requires refreshment. Londontown calling! My first experience with this nail lacquer brand wasn’t polish, but their kur Nail Treatment System. Basically, from October to May I literally apply kur’s Nourishing Cuticle Oil at least eight times a day— seriously. Call it my cross to bear—painful, dry, brittle cuticles (with regular manicures). The brush-on treatment absorbs immediately and allows me to proceed with my work. Chemicals in nail products seem to make people take action more than any other beauty product. kur’s Nail Hardener and Protective Top Coat are proudly, “5-Free”: Formaldehyde-free, Toluene-free, DBPfree, Formaldehyde resin free and Camphor-free; also, kur’s Restorative Nail Cream is paraben-free and the Strengthening Lacquer Remover is acetone-free. All products are vegan, gluten-free and cruelty-free. And the colored lacquers? Flirty and gorgeous. I use one of their 50 shades of blue on my pinkies and baby toes for fun. They’re a hoot—and you’ll get noticed. I know you’re as glad as I to be moving into our next season of bright, outdoor mobility and I hope you’ll make the effort to use some of these “Editor’s Picks” pro-gorgeous product suggestions. Remember, outdoor fun and sun doesn’t have to inhibit the smoothing, brightening or lifting part of our faces. Being progorgeous is always in season. Click here for more NiC stories:

GENTLEMAN IT’S TIME FOR A LITTLE SOPHISTICATION, GENTLEMEN THE DAILY GRIND OF PREPARING ONESELF TO FACE THE WORLD KEEPS GETTING MORE SOPHISTICATED, BUT ALSO MORE FUN. LOOKING YOUNGER AND SMELLING BETTER SHOULD BE A GIVEN, NOT A BURDEN.

Shaving—and daily moisturizing— are absolute musts for all men.

BY MARCO MEDRANO

having is a right of passage that men have little choice over. But modern technology has allowed us to have a little fun with it, as even our dad’s era razors have come back as “new and improved” chic with closer than ever results. And the Art of Shaving just keeps rolling out the hits—without a single miss. Enter: The Power Shave Collection featuring the Fusion Razor. With its perfectly weighted handle, the Fusion adds a micro-pulse that helps you reduce friction and increase razor glide. Using smart technology, a built-in indicator light begins to fade from vibrant blue to white with every razor use, taking the guesswork out of when to change your blade. Best part? It uses Gillette Fusion blades for easy re-stocking. Also new this season is my favorite shave products, Ocean Kelp with light aromatic essential oils. The lineup comes as a deluxe grooming kit or sold individually. Malin + Goetz has long stood as emblematic of being strong, simple and effective; it’s simply a very hip apothecary. Plus they’re just really cool

people with innovative and necessary regimens that take the doldrums out of personal grooming for man and man’s best friend (pooch). Having had the pleasure of meeting the M + G team (and enjoyed cutting Matthew’s hair at the iconic @RudysBarbershop), their belief in quality products they produce is not only sincere, it was born out of the exasperation of personally dealing with allergens and skin disorders. If you tend to be allergic or sensitive, start filling up your shopping cart. Mine tends to get full here, so I’ll hit the high note suggestions for you. Start the day (or date night) with Peppermint Body Scrub, proceed with their Bergamot, Sage or Rosemary Body Wash and feel like a terrific smelling conqueror! Facial Cleansing Oil is formulated with grape seed, avocado and olive oils, while Replenishing Face Serum and SPF 30 Face Moisturizer anti-age, hydrate and protect and prepare you for the day (they also disappear perfectly). Can I get you somethin’ to drink? Mojito Lip Balm. Offer you a smoke? A little Cannabis Perfume Oil on your wrists, neck and behind the ears will surprise and delight. TIP: The latter (one drop) is also a great base for your favorite cologne. San Francisco’s

N Haight-Ashbury neighborhood never smelled this good. RA for Men. Rhonda Allison has always been a respected, powerful skincare brand for the select few. Their Royal Retinol from the original lineup is in my Top 10 forever. The RA men’s line, once only found at high-end salons and spas, is now available online. And they take grooming and anti-aging seriously. Buffed Granular Scrub is professional strength and not watered down. The Shave Oil Antiox Serum and Shave Gel Aloe & Glycerin Balm is luxury shaving at its finest. Rezone Sake Toner will make you never forget this vital step. I promise. Complex VI Hydrating Serum and Radical Redux Skin Corrective will have you thinking there actually could be a fountain of youth. People will notice. I highly recommend honing in on your needs via their site, taking their short Skin Assessment or just calling. OK, so maybe you don’t collect couture fragrances for men. But going to the office, to the movies or the symphony may require a different scent—not to mention different times of the year. The world has finally come of age, with regard to being socially acceptable for men to explore their well-groomed, sweet-smelling side. I repeat, “parfum” isn’t exclusively for the ladies any longer. In men’s or true unisex fragrances it simply means more pure, pungent and longlasting. While Eau de Toilette (EDT) refers to strong, but less pure than parfum, which is more wearable for the office, for example. I had the good fortune of finding new DNA staples in my fragrance repertoire. The Crafting Boutique are careful curators of luxury French parfums and scents. I fell in love with three: Jouany Parfumeur’s offers St. Barthélemy which resembles filthy rich, mature, old-world European bourbon nights (vanilla, coco jasmine and cedar), while Marrakech brings a playfully fresh, devilish, daytime sensuality with orange blossoms, white musk, bergamot, grapefruit and neroli. Absolument Parfumeur’s Absolument

Absinthe delivers one of the most zippy, daytime indulgences ever with black Chinese tealeaves, tangerine pulp, cannabis and bergamot. Putting these scents on gives you something to look forward to. If you tend to be more of a branding snob (welcome!), then look no further than Diptyque Paris. Their Volutes fragrance could easily be one of the few scents you could consider ever wearing, if forced to spray an eau de toilette (or parfum) every day, forever. It’s widely considered one of the top and sexiest scents ever—equally suited for either men and women. I thought it was quite rich and masculine, but amazing. Their Tam Dao fragrance also comes in a shower gel, which they describe as Asian jungle using Sandalwood, Rosewood, Cypress and Ambergris. Body washes this fragrant can almost be worn scentless, without a cologne or fragrance. So nice. So, most of us have lived long enough to know we can sometimes infect ourselves, even when we’re trying to be as hygienic as possible, particularly when we’re shaving or brushing our teeth. Foreo’s LUNA for men is a next century handy device that uses the most ultra-hygienic silicone tentacles to lift a beard. But flip the LUNA over and you now have a light, flat-surfaced, pulsating wave that deposits your serums and concentrated treatments (such as Vitamin C serum) or… But the same, never gets gross, anti-microbial silicone that comprises LUNA, also makes up another new best friend, ISSA. This brand is not only taking the electric toothbrush to new heights, but supplying brush heads that don’t harbor bacteria and need not be replaced for an entire year. When it comes right down to it, that’s my kind of product. Now, we can look younger, feel better, smell great creating or own signature scents and save time with hygienic, results-producing grooming gadgets. Spring means feeling good, looking great and being active. I tip my hat. After all, Summer is right around the corner. Click here for more NiC stories:

TATTOOS: YOU GOTTA THINK BEFORE YOU ACT ARE TATTOOS STILL CONSIDERED “ART” IF IT HURTS (AND COSTS) SO MUCH TO REMOVE? BY MARIO QUIRCE

S

adly, Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas are no longer a couple, proving once again that Hollywood romances can be fleeting. Unfortunately for Ms. Griffith, tattoos last a bit longer, thus forcing her into a painful, nolasers-barred attempt to remove the “Antonio” heart tattoo she dedicated to Mr. Banderas in happier times. But the Working Girl actress is not the only one to succumb to the ink craze that started a few years back and shows no signs of abating, unlike bell bottom pants. For the Now It Counts generation tattoos were small and demure, perhaps a rose or an anchor on the upper arm of a man or woman with some interesting stories to tell. Now youngsters with little to say insist of placing entire murals on their body. I recently saw a beefy dude sporting a huge, twisted, multicolored dragon/eagle hybrid across his flank and back rivaling in size the Budweiser “Flying Eagle” neon sign I often admired as I drove past it on Route 1-9 on my way to Newark Liberty Airport. While the landmark is quite striking atop the brewery and no big whoop to remove with a crane for maintenance, that dragon tat is gonna stay put come rain, come shine, come sagging skin. No part of the body is immune—from toes to eyelids and the nether regions in between. No subject matter or design is off-limits—skulls, Buddha, cartoons, guns, urinals, cobwebs, Jesus, dead relatives, power tools, equations, Biblical, historical, literary verses, songs, parables, admonishments, observations, quotations. “After Rain Comes Sunshine,” one tattoo devotee felt compelled

52

to ink on her arm. Some offer advice: “Where you invest your love, you invest your life.” That’s good to know, but you’d think the ancient Egyptians hadn’t invented papyrus back in the First Dynasty for that type of stuff. If this trend continues, Hallmark could soon be out of business. No, seriously. The consequences of this are serious, including unemployment for greeting card copywriters. As the President famously observed, ATMs caused unemployment by putting bank tellers out of work. I’m afraid tattoos are doing the same for those who prefer to put art on canvas and words on paper. One glimmer of hope is that just as tellers retrained for ATM repair, artists and writers will retrain for tattoo removal, because Hollywood actors can’t be the only one with regrets. I realize that each generation likes to make outlandish fashion statements. When I was a young buck, it was platform shoes. A blessing, as I’m vertically challenged. Alas, all good things must come to an end and I retreated back to shoes with heels closer to the pavement as trends changed. But remember kids, tattoos are the gift that keeps on giving, and giving, long after it has overstayed its welcome. So take this from someone who survived platform shoes, bell bottoms, shoulder pads, Qiana shirts, bolo ties and, yes, the urban cowboy craze—don’t put anything on your body you can’t put in a bag and donate to Goodwill. Words to live by, friend. Click here for more NiC stories:
