ICD-10-CM - Overview and Specific Coding
This webinar will provide an overview of ICD-10-CM, its structure and reporting requirements. It will help attendees understand the differences between ICD-9 and ICD-10.
Why Should You Attend: The ICD-10-CM code system will replace the current ICD-9 volumes 1 and 2, and will be used by all entities that are reporting healthcare claims, occurring on October 1, 2014. This is approximately a 5 time expansion of the available codes and each code is very specific. Several new features of reporting guidelines are present in ICD-10-CM. It will be necessary to become familiar with the code set in order to obtain correct reimbursement for claims. This webinar will cover the general reporting requirements for ICD-10CM, the new rules that will apply, the use of placeholder “X”, and examples for reporting from each section of ICD-10-CM.

Structure of ICD-10-CM – Up to 7 characters. What do the characters designate? Areas of significant change in the ICD-10-CM code set. Certain conditions, such as MI have rule changes for reporting. Using X as a placeholder. When should a placeholder be used? Learn to determine if this character is needed for accurate reporting.
Laterality is a new feature in ICD-10-CM. Learn why it matters. 7th character extensions. When should this be reported? Which character should be reported and which one is correct? Increased documentation specificity. More accuracy in the details of documentation will be necessary to successfully report ICD-10 codes. Effect on encounter forms. Practice encounter forms must be reviewed for adequate use and what, if any, changes will be required? Training and preparation. Do not delay implementing staff and provider preparation. Inadequate preparation will result in claims denials and delays.
