Yuan-Chen Li (b.1980, Taiwan), Composer Li Yuan-Chen, a member of the emerging generation of Taiwanese composers, was born in 1980 in Tainan, Taiwan. As a child she studied composition and music theory with Wu Ting-Lien, and in 1998 she enrolled at Taipei University of the Arts, where she studied composition with Hung Chung-Kun and Yang Tsung-Hsien, and studying guqin and classical Chinese vocal phonology with Lee Fong and Li Tien-Kuei. In 2006 she traveled to the U.S. to attend the Yale School of Music, where she studied under Martin Bresnick and Ezra Laderman, earning her Artist Diploma in 2008. In 2009 she entered the PhD program at the University of Chicago, where she has studied composition with Shulamit Ran, Marta Ptaszynska, and Kotoka Suzuki and orchestration with Cliff Colnot. In 2000 Li’s work Tsang (The Funeral) drew attention in the Taiwanese music world for its unconventional orchestration, and her orchestral work Awakening, which premiered at the Asian Music Festival in Tokyo in 2003, further demonstrated her orchestrational talents and musical imagination. Her signature work from her student period in Taiwan, Intermezzo: Tsan (Meditation), brought the sound world of the guqin and the classical Chinese vocal style to the chamber music setting; her solo guzheng piece Cat’s Romp combined elements of movement, recitation and theatrical space, earning much acclaim in traditional music circles.
