Be your own person and don’t listen to anyone who says differently. We are all unique! S T O RY B Y M I N A . L E E

Whether you recognize her as Alex Dunphy on Modern Family or the voice of Disney’s Princess Sofia, Ariel Winter’s push to the top is unstoppable! At just twenty years old, she holds an extensive filmography. The wide range of roles showcase her talent perfectly, and if this is just a small glimpse of what’s to come—she will dominate the silver screen. This combination of wit and ability comes from personal experience, and for Winter that began with an early start in the industry at four years old. Hollywood is a beast, and to grow up in a frenzied world where everyone’s a critic, she remains very self- aware. Every experience, good or bad, adds strength to the young starlet’s character. She never shies away from controversy and this fearless approach to fame is admirable. Winter shares with us some sincere advice for Hollywood hopefuls and how she handles the volatile nature of social media. If there’s anything you can take away from her words, it is to be kind and be humble. Two things that can be quickly forgotten, but in all of Winter’s years of acting she stays very true to.

YOU DO VOICE ROLES WITH VARIOUS SHOWS, AND IT’S IMPRESSIVE HOW EVERY CHARACTER YOU’VE DONE HAS THEIR UNIQUE TONE AND PERSONALITY TO THEIR VOICE. IS IT CHALLENGING OR MORE FUN? HOW DOES IT COMPARE TO ACTING ON A SET? —Voice acting was actually one of the first things I did when I started in the industry! I think it is more challenging than on-camera work because you have to bring an animated character to life using just your voice—typically alone in a soundproof box. On-camera acting can be more physically and emotionally taxing, seeing as you use all parts of yourself, and you also work off the other actors in the scene. I don’t think I have a favorite [character] though. Voice-over work can be done in your pajamas which is pretty fantastic, but on-camera work is a little more communal. CAN YOU SHARE WITH US ANY VALUABLE LESSONS YOU’VE TAKEN AWAY FROM THE SET OF MODERN FAMILY SO FAR? —The time it takes to make quality. The show has been on for ten years now, and we still take a great deal of time and care to make sure every scene is right, and we’re making the most of our funny moments. WHAT’S THE MOST SUBSTANTIAL PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN SO FAR IN YOUR CAREER? —Always be professional! Make sure you’re on time and prepared at all times. Also, always be kind and grateful for the all of the blessings you get, perspective really helps in this industry.

ANY ADVICE YOU’D GIVE FOR YOUNG DREAMERS IN HOLLYWOOD? —Being humble, kind, and professional are some of the most important pieces of advice I give people. Focus on what you love about the craft and make sure you are secure in who you are because you are going to have to face a lot of judgment and rejection in this industry. It’s important to fight for what you want, and don’t get caught up in all of the side bullshit. WHAT GOALS DO YOU HAVE SET FOR YOURSELF AS YOU CONTINUE YOUR ACTING CAREER? —I want to continue making movies and maybe move towards producing a little more. My ultimate goal is to make enough money to purchase some land and open a dog rescue. WHEN YOU HAVE A FREE MOMENT, HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND THEM? —I’m such a grandma these days! My friends all call me squad mom. I probably call my dad, Glenn (coolest dad ever), at least once a day to see if he wants to come over for dinner or go to the bowling alley. I’m a big fan of poker, so whenever I can I try to set up a game. I’ve started cooking, so I love preparing dinner, and I’m addicted to escape rooms. We’ve done almost every one of them in LA. I’m also absolutely OBSESSED with my fur kids, so the majority of my free time goes to lying on the couch with the dogs and my boyfriend while we watch The X-Files. I try and get to the gym or do boxing whenever I can to stay healthy. In addition to all of that, spending time with my nieces and god-kids is something I try to do as often as I can. They are my whole world!

ON ADVOCACY YOU’VE BECOME A POWERFUL VOICE OF SUPPORT FOR MANY THINGS FROM EMPOWERING WOMEN TO BULLYING TO DEPRESSION. CAN YOU SHARE WITH US WHAT THIS MEANS TO YOU—TO BE AN ADVOCATE FOR THESE AREAS AND BEING ABLE TO SPEAK OUT ON THE IMPORTANCE OF ACKNOWLEDGING AND ADDRESSING THESE ISSUES? —I’m very proud to be part of a generation that doesn’t shy away from formerly “taboo” topics such as depression and bullying. The dangers of bullying and depression are nothing new, but with the emergence of social media, everything has gotten exacerbated. I feel that bullying and depression go hand in hand. I’ve experienced first-hand the toll bullying can take on anyone, no matter what age, so I don’t tolerate it. I suffered from depression before I was even on social media. I have been chronically depressed since childhood. Unfortunately, I’ve had a lot of exposure to it. Depression is a dark hole to go at alone, and for a long time depression was seen as a disease or meant someone was broken. In reality, most of the population has or will suffer from some form of mental illness in their lifetime. Mental illness doesn’t need to be hidden or glorified. It should be normalized to where people feel comfortable sharing with their families and friends, and know they’re not alone. There are options. I’ve personally been on anti-depressant/ anti-anxiety medication for six years now, and while it has been a rough road of ups and downs finding the right 6

medications and methods of dealing with how my depression made me feel, it has really helped. By opening up about my struggle, I’m hoping I can help someone who feels like they don’t know what to do or when they can’t accept their situation. Depression doesn’t pick its victims. Sometimes people only see success or money and don’t realize that the person can still be struggling. No

how hurtful or damaging they are, from the safety of anonymity.

physical object, amount of money or changes to appearance can generate happiness.

I take breaks from social media periodically because I think it is healthy to walk away and focus on the life that’s in front of you instead of the life happening on your screen. I receive horrible comments regardless of what I post, and it gets hard not to let them affect you sometimes. People forget that EVERYONE has feelings, regardless of their career choice.

SOCIAL MEDIA IS A ROLLER COASTER. IT’S A GREAT PLATFORM FOR EMPOWERMENT, YET AT THE SAME TIME, IT ALLOWS PEOPLE TO BULLY OTHERS FROM BEHIND A SCREEN AND KEYBOARD. HOW DO YOU HANDLE THE CHALLENGES OF THESE PLATFORMS AND APPS? —Social media and I have had a very tumultuous relationship. I appreciate the platform social media gives me to express my views or help people through tough times. However, social media has become a huge platform to either tell us how we should live or bully others. These platforms have given us a way to say whatever we want, no matter

FOR ALL YOUR FANS AND FOLLOWERS, WHAT POSITIVE MESSAGES DO YOU HOPE THEY GAIN FROM YOUR WORK AND WORDS? WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE TO YOUNG PEOPLE THAT LOOK TO INSTAGRAM, TWITTER, SNAP, ETC. FOR INFLUENCE? —Social media makes it possible to judge everything others do at any given time. I’d like people to look at social media as a way to connect with friends and express yourself instead of using it as a sounding board for your anger or as a standard of what life should be. Be your own person and don’t listen to anyone who says differently. We are all unique!

THE GAME YOUR NEW SERIES ‘FIVE POINTS’ JUST CAME OUT IN JUNE! CONGRATULATIONS ON THAT! CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR ROLE AS ‘TOSH’? —Thank you! Yes, I play Tosh, who is basically the popular girl in school. She cares a lot about appearances; she focuses on how she looks & what she wears, and she’s obsessed with having the “perfect” relationship with her boyfriend who’s a star football player. I was excited for the challenge to play a “mean girl” because it’s the first time I’ve played that kind of unlikable character. Tosh definitely fits the mean girl stereotype, but she’s a lot more complicated than that. There’s a lot going on with her beneath the surface which affects her & she tries to hide that. Her “mean girl” attitude stems from her own insecurities and she projects that onto other people. It was important to me to make sure she wasn’t some caricature of the popular girl; I wanted to give her layers. CAN YOU SPILL TO COMPOSURE WHETHER THERE WILL BE A SEASON TWO OF ‘FIVE POINTS’? — We are waiting to find out, but I hope so! Season 1 ended with a shocking twist, so I know the fans want to see what happens next! WHAT’S THE MOST CHALLENGING CHARACTER THAT YOU HAVE EVER PLAYED? CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT MORE ABOUT THAT? —I did a movie a few years ago called “Do You Believe” where I played a pregnant homeless teenage runaway. I wore a 9-month pregnant belly in the movie. Since my character was homeless, I wore no makeup & I went days without brushing my hair because the director and I wanted it to feel realistic to what living on the streets would look like. My character was dealing with so much emotionally all on her own, trying to figure out what was best for her and her baby. I did a scene where I give birth in the backseat after a car accident, which was one of the most challenging scenes I’ve ever shot. I’m really proud of my performance in that movie. WHO INSPIRES YOU THE MOST AS AN ACTRESS? —I am very inspired by Kerry Washington, who I got to know personally, because she is our amazing Executive Producer on “Five Points”! She’s been incredibly successful in both film and television & her performances are always so truthful. Kerry also has her own production company & she’s producing projects that she’s passionate about. And while accomplishing all of that, she balances her career with being happily married & a mom to two adorable kids who manages to keep her personal life private. Those are goals I have for myself, so everything about Kerry inspires me!

WHAT ARE THE UPS AND DOWNS OF BEING AN ACTRESS, WORKING IN THE INDUSTRY SINCE YOU WERE SO YOUNG? —The “ups” are... that I’ve been able to do what I love for all these years! I can’t believe it’s been 12 years since I moved to Los Angeles & I’m so thankful that I’ve been working consistently for this long. I also feel very lucky that I’ve gotten the opportunity to work with very talented people who’ve also become my close friends. On the “down” side, it’s very easy to get caught up in the “What’s next”? For an actor, it can be a lot of pressure to always have something going on. This business is a rollercoaster & it’s easy to get discouraged when you’re in between jobs. But you just have to stay positive and be proud of how much you’ve already accomplished so far! (Which leads to the question lol)... WHAT IS NEXT FOR MADISON? —As for “what’s next?” for me haha... right now I’m waiting to see if we’ll do a Season 2 of “Five Points”. I’m also working on a new animated series Tina Fey is producing for Disney Channel called “Fancy Nancy”, which is based on the books. The show is adorable & I play the voice of “Brigette”! WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE THAT SOMEONE HAS GIVEN TO YOU AS A PUBLIC FIGURE? —My mom reminds me not to compare myself to anyone else, which is great

advice whether you’re a public figure or not. It’s easy to look around and wish you had what someone else has, or do what someone else is doing. But we are all on our own path! It’s important to appreciate each step in your journey. LET’S MOVE FORWARD WITH BEAUTY TALK! WHAT ARE YOUR FIVE MUST HAVE BEAUTY PRODUCTS? WHAT IS YOUR BEAUTY SECRET? —My five must-have products are: 1) Bioderma cleansing water 2) Kate Somerville ExfoliKate 3) Clean & Clear Blotting Sheets 4) Neutrogena Leave on Acne Mask 5) Bobbi Brown face base My beauty secret is “less is more” when it comes to skin care. My skin is very sensitive so I don’t like to experiment too much. I like to keep it simple with a few products that I know will work. YOU HAVE BEAUTIFUL SKIN, HOW DO YOU MAINTAIN YOUR SKIN? —Thank you! I make sure not to go to sleep with makeup on! Taking it off properly at night is so important. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MAKEUP LOOK? —My favorite makeup look is a bronze smokey eye, fluttery lashes, glowing skin & a brownish pink glossy lip! WHAT ARE MAKEUP PRODUCTS THAT YOU CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? —I can’t live without Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation, Anastasia

cream contour palette, and Kat Von D lip liners. LET’S TALK MORE ABOUT YOUR HAIR! WE ARE OBSESSED WITH YOUR HAIR! HOW DO YOU KEEP THE CURLS SO HEALTHY? ANY TIPS IN PARTICULAR? —Thanks! Proper trims are so important to keep curls healthy. If you have curly hair, I’d recommend a hairstylist who does a “curl by curl” cut! Curly hair is also naturally pretty dry, so it’s important to keep curls hydrated. Using a leave-in-conditioner is essential! I also frequently use deep conditioners & masks in the shower to keep my curls moisturized. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE HAIRSTYLE FOR YOUR EVERYDAY LOOK? —I keep it pretty simple with a wash & go curly hairstyle! I brush it out while it’s wet, use a leave-in conditioner, dry it gently with a microfiber towel, and that’s it! If it’s a lazy day, I throw it up in a bun. DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG GIRLS OUT THERE? —Trust your instincts. If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Always listen to that little voice inside your head.

PRESTON WADA TIPS

Preston Wada is an LA native who has had a passionate fascination with hair since he was old enough to style the hair of dolls – Cultivating his craft over 9 years, Preston is the go to hairstylist for a plethora of celebrity and fashion visionaries worldwide. Preston’s overall trademark is both on trend and fashion forward, but he is also equally passionate about creating soft wearable looks that have an expensive luxury feel to them. Look 1 — page 16 To achieve this curly look I used a 1/2 inch curler all over hair and brush out with wide tooth comb. Look 2 — page 18 Brush our precious curl pattern and use a triple barrel to create a more stretched out mermaid texture. Look 3— THIS PAGE Section have half up from ear to ear and use a bungee elastic to tie up. Then I slightly teased hair for volume and lay baby hairs with toothbrush. CHEMISTRY

HI ALEX, COMPOSURE IS SUPER EXCITED ON THE 4TH SEASON OF UNREAL, CAN YOU TELL US A LITTLE BIT OF YOUR CHARACTER IN THIS SEASON AND WHAT IS THE MOST EXCITING SCENE TO FILM FOR ALEXI PATROV IN THIS SEASON? —My character, Alexi, was the most unpredictable and provocative character of season three. He is an explosive and even dangerous guy, charming and full of vices and an artist with an incredible inner drama in the final stage of self-destruction, which creates a lot of trouble. Alexi comes back as a changed person who wants to focus on his art, but with the producers manipulating the show, Alexi is pulled back in. This was exciting to play because I had my first scene with Constance Zimmer, who plays Quinn, our producer. This scene brought me back to my time as the bachelor in Russia. I constantly had producers telling me what they wanted me to do that would help the show, but I always stayed true to who I was. That was quite amazing, as it was exactly the same thing happening in the scene I had with Constance.personal life private. Those are goals I have for myself, so everything about Kerry inspires me! 29

WHAT IS THE MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT THAT YOU CAN SHARE TO COMPOSURE FILMING FOR THE 4TH SEASON OF UNREAL? —For me personally, the most important and memorable moment was the last scene in the hospital after my character was badly injured. For a ballet dancer, losing his leg like this is the equivalent of death. I had to play a person who lost everything at once, which is such a powerful part to play. Five years ago, I was this man myself. After an accident, I survived a massive stroke, which left me paralyzed and unable to speak. It took me a long time to be able to get back to an active life, acting and singing, but I made it. I understand more than anyone else what my character had to feel lying in his hospital bed. You are currently working in the United States, but it seems that you are still active working in Russia as well. What are some difficulties that you are facing being in two different countries, especially on managing your social media contents and followers? I work all over Europe and am constantly traveling, which makes communicating with my fans difficult. But social media is an important part of my life, and I think I have found a way to do that. I now write my posts in two languages and am posting with the time differences in mind. I like to make funny videos but the biggest problem I faced was how to make everyone understand and make them universal for my fans around the world. I started to make them in two different languages or was adding subtitles, but that was strange as I would have to post

them twice. But then I thought about Charlie Chaplin, and that was it! Now I am making the videos with just music, no words or dialogue at all, and that works perfectly! It is far more difficult to be funny without speaking, but I enjoy the challenge, and it helps me get better as a director. I knew the videos were doing well when my friend told me that he was sent one of my videos...by his father! That’s what I call the success!

HOW DO YOU DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? —It’s a combination of modern sound and the 50s. I grew up in a small city far away from America, and I was the only one there in love with Rock-n-Roll and Elvis Presley. This love has influenced my creativity and my music became a kind of symbiosis of modern pop culture and old school 50s sound. YOU WORK CLOSELY WITH REDONE. HOW DOES IT FEEL TO WORK WITH BIG PRODUCER LIKE HIM? —RedOne is an amazing artist and a very nice person. I was blessed to be able to work with such an incredible producer and great professional. I was writing and producing music all my life, but working with Red I have learned so much. I realized that my feelings and vision have no limits CAN YOU SHARE TO COMPOSURE WHAT UPCOMING PROJECTS THAT YOU ARE WORKING ON? —Next week I am flying to Rome, Italy, where I will be playing...an American in an Italian film! Right after that I come back to LA and for the next few months where I will concentrate on music and shooting the new series of music videos this time for my American album. It will be about a couple in a love-hate relationship like in She’s Crazy But She’s Mine, and it will be as hilarious, I promise! WHO IS YOUR ROLE MODEL AND WHY? —I don’t have one, I prefer to be a role model myself! And the best is that I can be both the good and bad examples. THERE’S A LOT OF BULLYING HAPPENING RIGHT NOW ALL OVER THE WORLD, CAN YOU SHARE TO OUR READERS, HOW DO YOU USUALLY MANAGE/CONTROL ANY BAD COMMENTS ON YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA? —I fortunately do not suffer so much from this kind of bullying, but my best advice for the people who do is to not take it personally. They should feel sorry for the bullies who are unhappy and taking it out on others. Instead of creating something positive, they create trouble for other people. Just imagine how lonely and unhappy these people are, that the only thing they can produce - is bullying others. And on top of that, they are too scared to create something themselves for fear of being bullied. WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF? —Never stop believing in your dream, even if you think it’s not reachable. This will help it come true.
