Amanda Steele keeps it very real for our nineteenth issue. While many know her as a YouTube phenom, we see a brilliant, driven young woman who’s had her fair share of struggles. S T O RY B Y M I N A . L E E

Steele refuses to get lost in the hype of numbers and instead produces content that is loyal to herself and her fans. She never loses sight of what initially put her on the map, and continues to be humbled by those who believed in her from day one. Putting vlogs out in a public space since only Elementary school has given Steele the ability to adjust her career as she grows, but also learn how to take on the pressures that come with. It’s never easy to see others tear down work that took a long time to create, but Steele gives sound advice for anyone facing bullying online and offline.

Sharing a personal look into her life and style has always been at the forefront of Amanda Steele’s empire, but also she continues to pursue acting—strengthening her abilities to take on new roles. With time we expect her to make a substantial mark in Hollywood, and we can’t wait! ON BEING A CONTENT CREATOR BUILDING SUCH A PROMINENT CAREER AT A YOUNG AGE OPENS YOU UP TO A LOT OF CRITICISM, HOW DO YOU COMBAT THIS NEGATIVITY, AND WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM THE CHALLENGES OF BEING IN THE PUBLIC EYE? —The negativity was something that was really hard for me as I was growing up while posting my life online. It was really hard to find myself while thousands of people were telling me who I was. I just had to step back and realize that I am doing what I love and indulging in my passions while haters are just spewing negativity from behind a computer screen. Over time I have found that if I had never let any haters get to me, and I continued doing exactly what I was, I would be much farther in my success. The positivity outweighs the negative, and the people that do love my videos—that is who my content is for. I am not going to change what so many of my followers love because some other people out there are taking their personal problems out on the internet. My content is for my loyal followers, and nasty comments 8

aren’t ever going to take that away from them and my own success. YOUR SUCCESS DID NOT COME WITHOUT HARD WORK AND SACRIFICE, WAS THERE EVER A MOMENT YOU FELT LIKE EVERYTHING WAS TOO MUCH TO HANDLE? —Being a YouTuber is a full-time job. At my peak growth and demand, I was also in public high school. Juggling both took a stressful amount of not only time but emotion. I think high school sucks no matter who you are, but on top of school bullies and feelings of loneliness, I had thousands of haters online too. It became very overwhelming for me when I would spend nights crying over mean youtube comments and then waking up and hearing more negativity from my classmates at school. This point in my life was very hard on me, but things started to look up when I began online school and could focus more time on my YouTube channel. THE DIGITAL WORLD MOVES QUICKLY WITH ITS CONSTANT CHANGES, ALGORITHMS, ETC. HOW DO YOU STAY PASSIONATE AS YOUR

WORK CONTINUES TO PROGRESS? —I stay passionate about my work throughout the constant changes of the digital world by keeping in touch with who I am and why I do what I do. It is easy to get sucked into numbers, growth, and competition, which could honestly lead to a fall. Luckily for me, I started my YouTube channel so young that I know exactly what my passions were. Fashion design is the reason I started YouTube. I have an intense love for beauty and connecting with other people online that like the same things as me. I was never a very social girl. I chose to stay inside on the computer most nights instead of meeting new people and hanging out with friends. This makes me so passionate about the fact that fashion, beauty, and tech are all things I have loved from the beginning. I know to follow my heart, do what I love, WORK HARD, and everything will work out. WHAT IS THE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE YOU’D GIVE YOUNG PEOPLE HOPING TO WALK A SIMILAR CAREER PATH? —WORK HARD. It is easy to see luxurious lives online of other people (which seems like it was just handed to them) and assume we deserve COMPOSURE

the same. Unfortunately, we don’t all come with the same support for our career, and we have to deal with the cards we are dealt. As long as you put your FULL, ENTIRE heart and head into what you do, you will go places. You need to know exactly what you want, and every day work in small steps to get there. Being true to who you are and working hard on your goals is a foolproof way to success. You know you best. You have to embrace all the things that make you...you, and it makes you a unique creature! No one can be a better you, and you can’t be a better version of someone else. When you are the best you, you’ve won.

SNEAK PEEK INTO? —I launch a jewelry collection with one of my favorite brands, LUV AJ, December 3rd. I am so proud of this collection and think it represents me in such an awesome way. I can’t wait for people to see!

WHEN IT COMES TO CREATING CONTENT FOR YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORMS, WHAT CURRENTLY INTERESTS YOU THE MOST? —I am currently most interested in fashion and vlogging content. I like how I am testing out how to produce personal, intimate content YouTube viewers enjoy while adding my fashion-focused style.

AS AN ACTRESS, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO TAKE ON DIFFERENT ROLES AND FILM FOR TELEVISION VERSUS YOUR VLOGS? —I love taking on different roles for film and TV. With my YouTube channel, I feel like there is already a standard of how I am online and what people know of me. When I am acting, I get to indulge in characters that might be nothing like me but have a tiny piece of my personality. I have so much fun digging somewhere deep into my personality and mannerisms and then letting it take over. While acting, I can express parts of myself that might not be appropriate or accepted online.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST MEMORABLE COLLABORATION THUS FAR? —I have had such amazing collaborations that I am so thankful for! As for the most memorable, I would say my collaboration on sunglasses with Quay Australia. I was so young at the time of this collab, and this brand really believed in me, which is so special to me. I saw the collection sell out lightning fast and then put on eBay for almost ten times the original price! I then started to see my designs in stores like TopShop, Urban Outfitters, and Nordstrom. This was a huge moment for me. ANY COLLABORATIONS IN THE WORKS THAT YOU CAN GIVE US A 9

YOU’VE EXPRESSED WANTING TO LAUNCH A CLOTHING BRAND IN THE FUTURE. CAN YOU SHARE WITH US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR DESIGN VISION? —For clothing design, my girl is smart, sexy, edgy, androgynous and confident.

dark things from your past in order to become the character. Although, I think this process is the beauty of acting. WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR MOST MEMORABLE MOMENTS FROM WORKING ON THE SETS OF GUIDANCE AND FREAKISH? —On set for Guidance was my first time acting ever. Every experience I had on set was new and exciting! The Freakish set was super cool because it was the first time I had worked with stuntmen and did more action-based acting. I had to use a fake gun and all!

ON BEING AN ACTRESS LOOKING INTO THE FUTURE, WHAT SORT OF ROLES AND GENRES DO YOU HOPE TO TAKE ON? —I would love to play a character that is beautifully broken. A character who is so out of her mind but somehow speaks to all of us—understanding her and seeing the beauty of it. FINALLY, ARE THERE ANY NEW PRODUCTIONS COMING UP IN 2019? —I am currently working on a new TV show called Paradise City! It is a spinoff of the amazing Showtime movie American Satan.

WOULD YOU SAY IT’S MORE FUN OR PERHAPS CHALLENGING BECOMING AN ENTIRELY NEW CHARACTER AND DEVELOPING HER PERSONA? —It depends on the character. It is always fun for me to take on a new persona and perform, but it is also hard at times. If the character has gone through intense trauma, I have to put myself in this awful mindset to perform as her. It gets very emotionally draining to bring up COMPOSURE

I never imagined that I would win an Emmy, but not because I didn’t think I was deserving. It just wasn’t a focus for me. When I started out in this business, my focus was to be the very best at being comfortably myself.

Jeannie Mai S T O RY B Y M I N A . L E E

FIRST OFF, WE WANT TO SAY A HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO YOU AND YOUR CO-HOSTS ON WINNING AN EMMY THIS YEAR! FROM THE VERY BEGINNINGS OF THE REAL TIL NOW, DID YOU EVER IMAGINE TAKING HOME AN EMMY WOULD HAPPEN? —Thanks for the congrats! No, I never imagined that I would win an Emmy, but not because I didn’t think I was deserving. It just wasn’t a focus for me. When I started out in this business, my focus was to be the very best at being comfortably myself. Well, that and being booked! That focus stays the same today, as well as my mission of empowering women in an entertaining way. So 18

Emmy or not, I’m going to stay killing it doing just that. WHAT THOUGHTS AND EMOTIONS RAN THROUGH YOUR MIND THE VERY SECOND THEY ANNOUNCED THE WIN? —Real talk? I couldn’t believe they called our names! We were ecstatic. Shoes went flying, and I had to try to keep my extensions in. Everything else was a grateful blur. WHAT DO YOU HOPE THE FUTURE HOLDS FOR THE REAL? —I hope The Real is on for another ten seasons. I love growing with our audience. In just five years, we’ve gone through marriage, divorce,

babies being born, and even tragedy, and through it all, we’ve held each other closer than ever, with our #RealFam. Our show is a genuine example of how I wish the world could be, differences and all—we are family. LET’S TALK ABOUT FASHION A BIT! LOOKING AT FASHION AS A WAY TO EMPOWER, WHEN DID YOU FIRST GENUINELY START TO SEE CLOTHING AS SOMETHING MUCH MORE PSYCHOLOGICAL? —I first recognized the power of clothing through my mother. I saw her transform from a wife and mom of three kids to an entrepreneurial businesswoman in just one outfit. COMPOSURE

I call it “Wearapy” today. “Wearapy” describes the instant therapeutic mood clothing can give you from the outside in. It is a very powerful tool women can use to put the game face on for anything they want to achieve in life and relationships. OVER TIME, WHAT SORT OF IMPACT, POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE, HAVE YOU SEEN SOCIAL MEDIA HAVE ON THE FASHION INDUSTRY? —Social media is like a puppy. It’s cute and cuddly and looks easy to handle at first, but then you realize it can be a little punk that needs constant attention and care. While I like that social media allows me to see internationally what’s trending, and what everybody is wearing in different parts of the world, it has also made bullying easier and leads women to believe that things in social media are what real life should look like. FALSE! Social media is a mere highlight reel of your best filtered moments filtered. As long as you know that nothing can replace the true beauty in the ups and downs of real life, then continue playing the social media game unattached. WHAT IS THE BEST PIECE OF STYLE ADVICE YOU HAVE RECEIVED GROWING UP THAT HAS STUCK WITH YOU OVER TIME? —The best piece of style advice came from Mama Mai—that the sexiest 20

thing I could wear is my smile, and it’s true. Even when you’re not feeling your best, walking in with a bold, confident smile leaves a lasting impression that people want to remember about you anyway, that you love yourself and the life around you. WHEN IT COMES TO WARDROBE STAPLES, WHAT ARE YOUR TOP TWO MUST-HAVES RIGHT NOW? —When it comes to wardrobe staples, my two must-haves are Thinx undergarments and No Ka ‘Oi athletic wear. Thinx is a genius line of period proof panties. They have a built-in absorbency with insane foolproof production. And they’re super sexy as well. When it comes to daily outfits, I would live in athletic wear, because it shapes my body and makes me feel motivated to fit in a workout at any time. No Ka ‘Oi is a sick brand of luxury activewear that makes every woman look and feel confident and cool. Their colors are so sick. I haven’t found any athletic wear that compares to No Ka ‘Oi’s quality and design. ONE STYLE FAD OR TREND THAT NEEDS TO GO? —One look that I could retire is super caked Instagram makeup. It’s about time we let our skin breathe dammit. This holiday season let’s “bake” cookies instead of our foundation!

WHAT WAS ONE OF YOUR BESTLOVED RED CARPET LOOKS? —My recent red carpet look from The People’s Choice Awards of 2018 was really fun. I love wearing pants whenever possible because I’m a little bit more of a tomboy when it comes to ease of style, and what girl isn’t gaga for some Gucci gang? WE READ HOW YOU SUPPORT NEW FEMALE DESIGNERS, AND WE AT COMPOSURE HAVE A HUGE SOFT-SPOT FOR INDEPENDENT DESIGN! CAN YOU SHARE WITH OUR READERS SOME NOTEWORTHY ONES? —I will always support entrepreneurial female designers first. Victoria Beckham is a great example of ten years of strong, stylish, consistent cuts for women. Her silhouette molds a woman’s body into her best sensual self. I appreciate the variety within Khloe Kardashian’s Good American denim and athletic wear. The stretch really does snap any booty into shape, haha. The last line of talented female designers I would support is Ethical Stories, Ethical Me. This is a sustainable fashion and lifestyle [collective] where they source from around the world enabling economic development through trade rather than direct foreign aid. There’s nothing like feeling good about the way you look.

Couture with

Axelle MigĂŠ

COMPOSURE HAD THE HONOR OF MEETING WITH Coppélia Pique again, and we were looking forward to what Axelle Migé had to present this season. Expectations were high from our previous visit and Migé met them with her newest collection—a refreshing and modern take of the 70s. Coppélia Pique is a gallery that displays carefully curated presentations of ready-to-wear, haute couture and a variety of artists’ creations. The layout of the gallery was a beautiful flow of Migé’s modern approach to the 70s integrated with art pieces to create a rich and engaging experience. Viewers can carefully examine the new collection with its beautiful details that can only be truly appreciated when viewed closely. We got to sit down with Axelle Migé inside the Gallery to discuss her inspirations and vision for the new collection.

to be generally fun with a purpose. Migé takes consideration of what others may want and need to be more happy in life. She states that for her, “it’s not just about fashion, but it is about a crew of artists that work together for a long period of time.” She wants others to feel “beautiful and happy” while wearing her designs.

HER MESSAGE

Towards the end of our interview, Migé says her message is to “return to something more simple, more human, and more natural. The whole program of the gallery and the collection would be about this subject—about how we can live in this world like a good human, and to make together something new, not to run after fashion week, but to do fashion slowly with quality and in an artistic way.” Lastly, she adds in a positive note, “we have a beautiful energy together so let’s go!”

HER INFLUENCES

For her inspiration, Migé had taken the spirit of a group of musician friends creating music together, and explained that this group of friends “would have fun writing music, trading male and female clothing amongst each other,” and they would listen to famous songs of psychedelic music like Led Zeppelin and David Bowie.

HER FAVORITE PIECE

Out of the new collection, Axelle Migé’s favorite piece is the electric purple dress. She tells us excitingly, “I’m absolutely in love with the fabric, because on the body [it] is really soft. It was my first try to do a simple and elegant dress.” This dress is also her favorite cut and style, specifically the area between the shoulder and waist since she typically cuts a higher waist.

S T O RY B Y M I N A . L E E

TO START, WE WANT TO CONGRATULATE YOU ON YOUR DEBUT MOVIE ROLE IN BIXLER HIGH PRIVATE EYE FOR NICKELODEON! HOW EXCITED ARE YOU? CAN YOU SHARE WITH US HOW IT FELT TO BE ON YOUR VERY FIRST FILM SET? —It was unbelievable! I loved every minute of it. First of all, Jace (Norman) is hysterical. So, much of the time, we were just cracking up being silly and goofy. I’m so thankful to have his friendship and that he was there through my first feature—it made it really easy and fun. Our director, Leslie (Kolins Small) was also amazing. She made it very comfortable for us. And Nickelodeon was so incredibly supportive. I loved working with them and the crew. WE’RE IN LOVE WITH YOUR NEWEST SINGLE, “GUCCI ON MY BODY.” FROM MUSICAL.LY (NOW KNOWN AS TIKTOK) TO BEING A RECORDING ARTIST, HOW HAS THIS TRANSITION BEEN FOR YOU? —Thank you! It has been so cool. Music has always been such a part of my life, so for me, it is part of the reason I fell in love with Musically in the first place. I started playing the piano when I was a little girl, and my dad is a songwriter, so it felt very natural to work with other writers and get into the studio and record. AS YOUR POPULARITY SURGED, WHAT WERE SOME OF THE DIFFICULTIES YOU FACED AND HAD TO OVERCOME? —The first thing that was really hard and weird was 43

the cyber-bullying. It was hard reading all of these horrible things people would write about me—people who didn’t even know me. I’ve learned to mostly tune that stuff out. As a result, part of what drives me is the desire to inspire other kids to be proud of themselves and stand up for themselves and tune out hate. The other thing that’s been weird is that so many people are so quick to judge and be dismissive of me as a recording artist or actor or creator. It’s as if because I gained an audience on an app, I’m not allowed or shouldn’t try to put music out or pursue other interests. I find that really strange. My whole life I’ve acted and been around music, and I don’t feel that just because I happened to gain a following in social media, I shouldn’t be able to pursue other things that I’m passionate about or enjoy. YOUR BOOK DREAMING OUT LOUD IS OUT NOW! HOW DOES IT FEEL TO HAVE IT ON SHELVES AND YOUR FANS CONNECTING TO YOU THROUGH YOUR WORDS? —It feels amazing. Something I’ve always loved doing is going to bookstores looking for great poetry collections or novels or psychology books. So to be able to walk into my favorite bookstore and see my own book on store shelves is almost beyond my wildest dreams, and to know that my supporters are able to get a deeper connection into my heart and thoughts means so much. LET’S GET INTO SOME BEAUTY QUESTIONS, WHO FIRST TAUGHT YOU ABOUT SKINCARE AND MAKEUP? — Haha! I would say my mom, but she would tell you herself that she doesn’t know what she’s doing when it comes to makeup! However, she has taught me a lot about skincare and making sure that I treat my skin right. For makeup, like a lot of kids, I’ve watched YouTube videos and have been lucky to work with some really good makeup artists who always share their tips with me. CAN YOU SHARE WITH US SOME QUICK TIPS FOR EASY DAYTIME LOOKS? —You’re a natural beauty, so you don’t need to do anything at all! If I want just a little flair while I’m running out the door, I’ll do a little mascara and lip gloss—that’s it! For a pop of color, I might dab a little blush on my cheekbones. COMPOSURE

WHAT’S THE ONE SKINCARE PRODUCT YOU ABSOLUTELY CAN’T LIVE WITHOUT? —Moisturizer! 100%. I’m not very picky about which one, but I can’t be without moisturizer. HOW ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE COSMETIC BRANDS? —I love Neutrogena. They make great skincare products that are really affordable and easy to get anywhere. As far as cosmetics, nothing beats Tarte. They’re kind of a luxury brand, and I am always impressed with their quality. I’ve also found that a lot of everyday brands like CoverGirl and Maybelline work just fine. I think it’s best to find what works on your skin and go with that. There’s no need to spend a fortune on cosmetics. CAN YOU GIVE US A RUNDOWN OF YOUR NIGHTLY SKIN ROUTINE? —Ugh—I’m like the last person to ask because I’m super low maintenance with my skin care! So if I have makeup on, I use a makeup remover wipe. Then I use a gentle cleanser to scrub my face. Neutrogena makes an acne proofing one that I like, and then I moisturize. Every once in a while, I might do a mask. DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE BEAUTY INFLUENCER YOU FOLLOW? —Miranda Sings of course!!!! I adore Colleen, so any chance I get I sing her praises. Kidding aside, I have a few I love and admire. Patrick Starrr is super sweet. We did a YouTube collab and I just absolutely loved meeting him and working with him. He was in the music video for “Aww” and was so generous with his time and energy. I also love James Charles. I know him personally—he is as direct in person as he is online, but he’s honest, real, and fun. And one you have to look out for is my roommate, Matthew RC Taylor. He’s still developing his skills, but he’s going to be great. FINALLY, WHAT’S COMING UP NEXT FOR ARIEL MARTIN? — I’ve got a few things that I’m really excited about. First, of course, is my Nickelodeon movie, Bixler High Private Eye, which comes out early 2019. Then, I’ve recorded some songs that I’m super proud about. They show a different side of me—a little more reflective. I can’t wait to put them out. I’m also really focused on being involved in the concept for the music videos, so it’ll be fun to make those. And lastly, I’m developing a script that I’m excited to produce. So hopefully, you’ll see a movie that I was involved in developing on the screen soon! 44

Sometimes what holds us back the most is our own insecurities and our fear of taking risks. It’s uncomfortable, but if you never make yourself uncomfortable, you will never grow.

Lindsey Stirling S T O RY B Y M I N A . L E E

WHEN WAS THE FIRST MOMENT YOU INCORPORATED VIOLIN WITH DANCING, AND WHAT INFLUENCED YOU TO DO THIS? —I was in the Junior Miss pageant my senior year of high school. It is a scholarship program, and I was trying to win to help pay for college. There were several other really talented violinists in the competition, and I was trying to find a way to stand out so I decided I would choreograph my performance and do a rock song instead of classical. It was so different, and I wasn’t sure what people would think—but I won. YOU HAVE AN EXTENSIVE LIST OF COLLABORATIONS WITH OTHER ARTISTS AND MUSICIANS, WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITES? — I loved the process of working with The Piano Guys. They are the best, sweetest, funniest humans in 50

the world and I adore them. Not to mention they are super talented. I was the most honored to work with Celine Dion. WITH YOUR NEWLY RELEASED WARMER IN THE WINTER: DELUXE EDITION ALBUM, AND A GROWING LIST OF ACCOLADES, AT WHAT POINT DID YOU REALIZE YOU WERE GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO WHAT YOU LOVE AS A CAREER? —I had been releasing videos on YouTube consistently for about ten months, and they had done ok. My covers were mostly what people wanted to see, but then I released an original violin Dubstep song that I had written, and in one day it got one million views. That was HUGE for me. I was speechless. Not only did more people watch it than had ever watched one of my videos—they loved MY music, not just my covers.

At that moment I realized my life had just changed. That it was not just a dream, it was my future. YOU’RE CURRENTLY ON YOUR ACCLAIMED HOLIDAY WANDERLAND TOUR VISITING SEVERAL CITIES AROUND THE UNITED STATES! WE WONDER—HOW DID IT FEEL TO CO-HEADLINE ON EVANESCENCE’S SYNTHESIS LIVE AND PLAY WITH AN ORCHESTRA AFTER SO MANY YEARS? —I loved being on the Evanescence tour. I have been a fan of Amy and the band for years—like, a huge fan. It was mind-blowing to get to tour with her and share the stage with her night after night. Playing with a live orchestra was intimidating, but wow it was cool. It brought my past music world and my current music world together.

FOR TOUR DATES AND WHERE TO FIND STIRLING’S NEWEST WARMER IN THE WINTER: DELUXE EDITION ALBUM, BE SURE TO VISIT WWW.LINDSEYSTIRLING.COM!

WHAT WERE SOME OF THE DIFFICULTIES OF COMBINING THESE TWO PASSIONS OF YOURS? —It’s really, really difficult. I have to work so incredibly hard still to be able to perform live. I have to work on my balance and dancing skills so that my technique doesn’t fall apart when I start to play the violin. I have to work really hard to keep my violin skills intact so that I don’t start to play out of tune or with a bad tone when I dance. It’s not easy.
