L i k e passing the baton in a runner’s race, August has come to a fast close with a transition into September, keenly noting summer’s last days. For some, the nostalgia of vacations, summer hats, and backyard barbeques are slowly settling in like the last bits of ash and smoke from a campfire. For others, the transition into fall is absolutely euphoric and couldn’t be embraced fast enough for its layers and feet-hugging boots. Indeed, the crossover is happening but that doesn’t mean we can’t revel in these last moments digging our toes into the sand (pg. 33), while taking mental notes on how to get ready for fall as shown in our “Fall Ahead Into Fashion” story (pg 54). And if you didn’t quite achieve that sun-kissed glow in the last couple of months, not to worry - we have the perfect solution with tips on how to achieve a freshly contoured look by strobing your way into autumn (pg. 71). Now that we have you looking refreshed, why not slip into effortless work style showing your colleagues and the rest of the world that the office suit is being quickly replaced with chic ensembles (pg. 73). Then, step out of the day’s grind into the elegance of red-carpet worthy gowns as we opt for longer hemlines, laced-sleeves, and rose petal-like layers in our “Polo Affair” editorial. Let this one sweep you into the excitement of the Emmy Awards season that will surely prepare us for the fall TV programs premiering in September. Kendrick Sampson, the man of our cover is also grateful to land a recurring role in the second season of How to Get Away With Murder that airs this month (pg. 75). As an avid student of his craft, he says, “it’s fascinating what you can learn from sitting and watching when the cameras are and aren’t rolling”. Also agreeing with this sentiment, Kiki Sukezane (pg. 41) reminisces about learning how to sword fight under the guidance of Takashi Kora (Last Samurai) in Japan. This fact alone should peak your excitement for her role in Heroes: Reborn and surely not to be missed! Lastly, the ever graceful Laura Regan (pg. 7) continues her path of action-filled roles that began with M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable, into her role as Agatha in Fox’s TV adaptation of Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report. We hope you enjoy this issue!

W

hen Laura Regan photographed with Composure Magazine, she showed us a glimpse of her elegance, grace, and her warmth of a girl-next-door personality. And when Laura spoke of her acting, her fullness of excitement was contagious to us all. Currently playing Agatha in FOX’s highly anticipated Minority Report, what we’ve seen of Laura in both film and TV seems to be just the tip of the iceberg of her career. CM: What was a one defining moment that inspired you to take on an acting career? LR: I spent a long time learning to believe in myself as an actor. I was studying acting, learning my craft, but also obsessively watching other actors. I went to every play I could get to. It was when I saw Jennifer Ehle and Stephen Dillane in The Real Thing on Broadway that I knew there was no turning back. The combination of Tom Stoppard’s crackling dialogue and Jennifer Ehle’s astonishing performance just blew me away. She was so open and real and perfectly “in the moment” – I remember consciously wanting the play to never end. And she made me feel everything, I mean everything! It was a revelation. I knew that I could happily spend my life trying to convey one percent of the real-ness and emotion that she conveyed that night. So that’s what I’m doing. CM: You had roles in some notable projects like Unbreakable, Mad Men, and Murder in the First - what were those experiences like? Is there an unforgettable memory from any of them you can share? LR: Each of those was a great experience that seemed to happen at just the right time. But the process of getting the role in Unbreakable will always stand out for me because it was my first acting job. I auditioned first in New York, and then got a callback for which I had to go to Philadelphia. I took the train and got to the casting director’s office and saw a poster for The Sixth Sense in the

9

CO MP O SU R E MA G AZI N E.COM

waiting room. I had no idea who I would be meeting. In the audition room, I laid down on the floor to do the scene, because the character was upside down in a crashed car. I remember this nice guy standing over me, giving me some direction. Then I went home, thinking, “wow, I was just at a casting office that cast The Sixth Sense!” When I got back to New York, my manager called and asked me how I liked meeting with M. Night Shyamalan, because I just got the job! CM: You’re currently working on the highly anticipated FOX series Minority Report, congrats! What was it like to receive the news that the show was picked up? What was your honest gut feeling prior to confirmation? LR: My gut feeling was always that it would get picked up, but things got pretty hairy before it was official. Everyone in the know told me it would get picked up early - which meant at the beginning of the week when the networks make their pickup decisions. Monday and Tuesday came, no news. On Wednesday, Fox started ordering series. Thursday, Fox ordered a bunch of dramas, but no news at all about our show. I emailed my cast mates to see if anyone else was going crazy and by Friday the email thread was constant and we were all freaking out. The feeling was, “we know they’re going to pick up our show, so why don’t they just PICK UP OUR SHOW already?” Stark Sands’ wife was due to deliver a baby and I couldn’t believe the stress hadn’t put her into labor yet. Wilmer Valderrama replied, “I just gave birth to twins!” Finally at 7pm Friday we got the call. It was crazy exciting and also an incredible relief. CM: Can you tell us about your role as Agatha? How does her character develop throughout the season? What would you say is the most surprising aspect of her character? What do you hope to see for Agatha in the future? LR: Agatha’s ability to see the future and her experience as a Precog has made her into a very confident, determined woman who uses her power

LR: Viewers can expect to meet new characters just as compelling as Tom Cruise’ John Anderton, each wanting to stop violent crimes for their own reasons. The show will provide a really thoughtful window onto the future, a chance to experience what technology and policing might be in 2065. CM: What has been your favorite part about filming Minority Report so far? LR: Making the scenes come alive. I really love the way our writers are developing the characters and it is so much fun taking those words off the page and playing with them. CM: Are there any other projects that you’re involved in? Any that are coming up?

to further her agenda. She does not doubt herself at all because she can see events before they unfold. Agatha is precise, strategic, and very careful about what information she shares, and with whom. She will surprise you every episode. CM: As one of three Precogs, what is the relationship like with the other two, Dash and Arthur? LR: Dash and Arthur are Agatha’s younger twin step brothers, and she definitely feels that she can control them. Of course, they do not totally agree. But because Agatha has the greater power of vision, they do defer to her on some level. Dash and Arthur also could not be more different from each other, so she plays them against each other when she feels she needs to. This is a family with a lot of secrets… CM: Being that the show is based on Minority Report film directed by Steven Spielberg, what can viewers expect from the show?

LR: Our filming schedule on Minority Report is quite intense, so my work calendar is filled up with this for the rest of the year. I am also involved with several environmental groups, and personally working toward raising awareness for the UN Climate Change Conference in Paris in November. This is a crucial chance for us to finally have a climate change agreement that is adopted by all countries. CM: When you’re not acting or on set, how do you spend your time? LR: I love the ocean. Swimming in it, doing cartwheels on its beaches or just dipping my toes in on a walk. And I love my bicycle. When I am riding I feel a kind of bliss. But more than anything I love being with my kids. My job is unpredictable and requires a lot of perseverance and creativity, so it’s such pure happiness to just surrender to them. They are everything to me, and being with them is my absolute favorite way to spend my time. “Minority Report” Premieres Sept 21st on FOX

JESSICA BIEL, JUSTIN BIEL & GRASON RATOWSKY #BAREITALL! The eco-conscious accessories brand, BARE launched its AW15 & SS16 collections at Ron Robinson Santa Monica August 27th,2015

L

ONG BEFORE IT BECAME TRENDY TO BE environmentally conscious, the Ron Robinson boutique had been a pioneer by offering a variety of eco-friendly brands for years, making it the perfect location for a BARE launch. We were invited for an exclusive preview JESSICA BIEL WITH BARE FOUNDERS LO SAMPADIAN, GRASON RATOWSKY AND JUSTIN BIEL of the upcoming BARE Spring/Summer 2016 line and to meet its co-founders Jessica Biel, her brother Justin Biel and longtime family friend Grason Ratowsky. The trio’s Denver-based company launched in 2013. Their concept is a line of eco-conscious, socially responsible travel accessories that focus on high quality material, practicality, and simple yet inspired design. Chatting at the launch party with Ratowsky, BARE’s lead designer, it was so clear how much care and thought go into his pieces. We have always found that when someone is truly passionate about their work and gives it the highest level of craftsmanship and focus, the end result dazzles more often than not. BARE is most definitely one of these circumstances. Each piece carries with it a story, given that he finds his vision through travel, art, and a deep appreciation for the many cultures he has encountered around the world. He began by using reclaimed materials from his travels and repurposing them into new unique pieces. Even now, Ratowsky works to upkeep this same spirit, always keeping a sustainable mindset and using diverse, global inspiration. These pieces are made for an adventurous soul, by an adventurous soul. We sure feel the wanderlust. BARE’s launch party attracted all kinds of celebrities eager to support this highly appealing, up and coming brand. Former 7th Heaven costars Andrew Keegan and Beverly Mitchell Cameron as well as actress Bai Ling. A fantastic energy surrounding inspired, unique designs! The collection is now available exclusively at Ron Robinson, and online at ronrobinson.com and baremade.com

llen Maldonado’s passion for acting began when he realized his place in his life and the need to support his mother and family. With his ultra hard-working ethics and his charismatic smile, he is landing roles in major productions such as Straight Outta Compton, The Start Up on BET, Black-ish on ABC, Survivor’s Remorse on Starz, and a second season with You’re the Worst on FXX. Composure Magazine sits with Allen Maldonado for a chat regarding his career and his involvement in own philanthropy. CM: When and how did you decide you wanted to be an actor? What inspired you the most? AM: I got bit by the acting bug in high school as something to do outside of playing basketball. It was when I finally graduated high school that I began to take acting as a serious career. One day while hanging out in the neighborhood, I saw a woman down the alley who seemed to be exhausted. With all the commotion around me all I could do was focus on this tired woman. So I slowly approached the woman and realized it was my mother. From that moment I realized that I would have to do something to support my mother and my family—acting would be the Godgiven gift that would allow me to achieve this goal. I can easily say that my mother is my true inspiration, not just to become an actor but also to achieve great things in life.

would enhance my status as the only male in my family of 8 girls and one nephew. It taught me about self-motivation and forcing myself to growup much sooner into a man because if I didn’t get things done, no one would. Those lessons would translate into the work ethic needed to be successful as an actor. CM: What was the most challenging experience starting out? AM: The first few years were extremely tough. I was working two jobs, attending college, and taking acting classes at night. I would catch the train from my hometown Rialto, which is 60 miles east of Los Angeles, just to attend my acting class. I would then return the next morning just to do it all over again. CM: Straight Outta Compton released this month what was it like to be a part of this film? Can you tell us about your role as Tone? Do you think the film was an accurate depiction of NWA and the what the culture was like in the 80’s/90’s?

...if I didn’t get things done no one would.

CM: Did your upbringing play a big part in your decision to pursue acting? AM: The fact that during my upbringing, I transitioned from a little boy into the man of the family helped to determine a lot for me in terms of acting. Acting was one of the many things that

AM: It was a complete honor to be a part of SOC. As a California native, I actually spent the first seven years of my life living in Compton and it was easy for me to relate to the story behind the film. In fact, my sister went to high school with MC Ren, so it was all very close to my heart. Tone plays a pivotal role in helping Eazy-E decide to quit selling drugs and turn his energy towards making music. I think the film gives great insight on the personal lives of NWA’s members as well as the social and political battles they had to overcome throughout the 80s and 90s. CM: You have been busy with other projects coming up like The Start Up on BET, Black-ish on ABC, Survivor’s Remorse on Starz, and a second season with

You’re the Worst on FXX. Can you tell us about your roles? AM: Yeah, I like to call it the #SummerOfMaldonado! I’ve been so blessed to contribute to several great shows and films. In the second season of Survivor’s Remorse, premiering August 22nd on STARZ, I play Deshawn May, an overly confident sports agent who used to dabble in the world of drug dealing. Constantly referring to himself in the third person, Deshawn comes into this season to cause havoc with his crazy antics and agent tactics. I am really looking forward to seeing how the audience reacts to the craziness of this character. In the second season of You’re the Worst, which debuts September 9th on FXX, I will be revisiting the role of Honeynutz, one of the three members of a hip-hop/skater rap group who have beef with each other. In the second season of Black-ish, which debuts September 23rd on ABC, it was a complete honor to play Dre’s assistant, Curtis. With the leadership of the great Kenya Barris, it’s truly a dream come true to be a part of the incredible cast and crew of people over at ABC. Teaming up with Anthony Anderson and being able to go through lines with the legendary Laurence Fishburne as he laughs at my jokes, it felt like a complete fantasy. The Start Up, which debuts September 19th on BET, is really special to me as I was able to team up with the young and talented Diggy Simmons, Chris Brew, Teyana Taylor, and Bria Murphy. This film is about a new generation of young entrepreneurs who are learning about the complicated life of juggling business with life and relationships. I play the role of Manny, a young upcoming club promoter who begins to date an established supermodel. CM: What role/character has been your favorite so far? How do you decide the roles you play? AM: Oh wow, that’s such a tough question! I’ve played a lot of amazing roles, but I think Deshawn May on Survivor’s Remorse is one of my favorites because I’m able to do a lot of things I would never

29

CO MP O SU R E MA G AZI N E.COM

do in real life. I pick my roles very carefully on a case-by-case basis. Each role has to allow me to grow as an actor, as well as elevate my position in my career. I have a clear plan and direction for myself, so each role has to fall within that plan. CM: What kind of roles do you hope to do more of ? AM: Action and Comedy point blank! I love doing action stunts and making jokes for a living. I would also love a heavy dramatic piece. A career like that of Leonardo DiCaprio, bouncing back and forth between genres, is the goal. CM: You’re also known to be an avid philanthropist and founded Demo Nerds. What is it about and what caused you to start it? How can others get involved? AM: I created Demo Nerds three years ago to provide at-risk kids in the Watts and Downtown Los Angeles area with the opportunity for acting and film production. Our program consists of a FREE 2-week camp focusing on acting exercises and techniques that build selfesteem and confidence. During the last week of the program the kids will develop, produce, and star in a short film. After the completion of the short film, we invite the kids’ friends and family to attend a red carpet screening of the film and an award ceremony for all participating children. If you would like to donate or volunteer, please visit Demo Nerds | Acting & Film Arts Camp for Kids (demonerds. com) for more information. “Survivor’s Remorse” airs on STARZ “You’re the Worst” premieres Sept 9th on FXX “Black-ish” premieres Sept 23rd on ABC “The Start Up” film debuts Sept 19th on BET

P

hotographing Kiki Sukezane was a delightful experience for our Composure Magazine team. Kiki was full of energy and was always present on set. Her movements were thoughtful, strong, and yet she flowed effortlessly. With a family history of samurais and having been trained under Takashi Kora for martial arts and sword fighting, Kiki’s latest role is Miko Otomo in the NBC’s Heroes Reborn. Kiki speaks to Composure about acting, her inspirations, and future work as a humanitarian. CM: You come from a family background of samurai - what does this mean to you in today’s culture and how has it influenced you? KS: Yeah, my ancestors from both mother and father’s sides are samurai, but I heard this only a couple years ago from my father. I’m not certain of the details regarding their positions, so I should find out when I go back to Japan. It’s so fascinating for me to learn about my family roots. CM: What inspired your martial arts training and how long have you been training for? KS: After I decided to be an actress, I moved to Tokyo and went to acting school called UP’s academy which is owned by Yoko Narahashi. She is one of the big casting director in Hollywood. She casted Rinko Kikuchi for the film Babel.

Ken Watanabe for The Last Samurai. They had a class for Japanese sword fighting called ‘’Tate’’. I learned sword fighting there for the first time in my life. Takashi Kora was our teacher who was in The Last Samurai, and he was a great teacher. He actually showed us his martial arts movement while acting and he impressed me every time I attended his class. His martial arts movements along with great acting inspired me a lot! I learned the most important basic movements in his class. I’ve been keep training since and it’s been six years now. CM: What inspired you to pursue acting? Did you always want to pursue a career in the US? KS: I’ve always wanted to be on screen when I was a little, but I didn’t really do anything to be an actress until I was around 20 years old. CM: What was your experience when you started acting? What is your favorite memory so far? KS: My first memory of acting was terrible. I had to do one scene in a class in front of audience. We started the scene and just after a couple of my lines, all the sudden, all of my lines have gone away from my head. I could remember nothing. We had to finish at the middle of the scene! I was too nervous and not prepared enough. CM: Who were the actors that inspired you?

CM: Did you have to go through a lot of training to prepare for your role? KS: For my role, there is much memorizing of choreography for Miko’s character. It doesn’t require much training since I can use what I’ve already learned. CM: Are there similarities between you and your character Miko? KS: Miko and Kiki never give up. Haha! KS: That’s really what I have to search and think about it. I want to help people who are dying from hunger or those without clean water to drink. I need to find out how I can really help, not only for a short term, but for their lifetime. CM: Congratulations on landing your role in Heroes Reborn! How did you feel when you received the news? If you have watched original, you will know each character’s history so you can understand the story in depth. CM: What is your favorite part of the show? KS: I love the Japanese parts of the show. There’s one more Japanese actor Toru Uchikado in Heroes Reborn. I have many scenes with him in Japanese and I’m so excited to watch those episodes. CM: What other types of roles do you hope to act in the future? KS: I hope I get to act in many different roles. I like to play crazy characters, but I also want to act in a drama. CM: What kind of crazy characters? KS: I’ve played gangster, a cat monster, and a geeky girl for Japanese films before. And currently for Heroes Reborn, a fighting girl. So maybe a ghost, a robot, or a Dracula next time? Haha! “Heroes: Reborn” premieres Sept 24th 8/7c on NBC

1.Start on freshly shampooed and

toweled dried hair, then add the Amika’s Heat Defense Serum from the midstrands to ends.

2. Blow dry the hair with medium heat using a boar brush until it’s completely dried all over. This technique is used to add texture to your hairstyle. 3

3. Separate the hair into two separate

sections. Then start at the back section of the hair with a upward braid. Pull the top section upward making sure its tight and smooth then secure it with a elastic band.

4. To create a base for your knot, wrap

a section out of your ponytail around an elastic band, then pin it in place. This will create the height for your desired look without worrying if it will go flat. 5

6

5. Back comb the remaining hair from

your ponytail, twist the hair around your base in opposite directions and pin in place. Then, loosen up your upward braid to create a different texture . Finally, spray your hair all over with Amika’s Touchable Hairspray to keep a soft but effortless look. Products Used : Love Amika

The Bottega Veneta girls is someone who doesn’t follow the rules. We saw a lot of geometry, dots, oversized lines and layers of lace.

DOLCE & GABBANA

BURBERRY PRORSUM

Christopher Bailey gave us a classic, free spirited feeling with this collection. He mixed different genres, styles and periods. Everything thrown togetherfrom fringing, quilting, Boho, hippie. Reminiscent of 70’s, 60’s.

Dolce celebrated La Mamma (the mother) in their show. The accessory was the baby. It brought a positive message to the show— and the collection—that everything we are is an extension of where we came from. This collection sure is the perfect mother’s day gift come May 2016!

fall ahead into fashion The ready-to-wear fall collections had daring silhouettes, creative layering, and little tweaks on beloved go-to’s that made us rethink our old favorites. Geometry meets bold color in this graphic state of play. Designers got linear and embraced a saturated palette to create looks with maximum impact.

STELLA MCCARTNEY

Stella’s own words about her collection: Celebrating freedom, exploring classics, teasing sexuality. She presented perfect tailoring and made every look feel so effortless and casual. Her faux fur long haired overcoats in ivory and black- to die for!

anessa Marano is no stranger to tough storylines that started with her role in Gilmore Girls and now as Bay Kennish in Switched at Birth. With the 4th season Switched at Birth underway, Vanessa speaks to Composure about forging ahead with the exciting changes happening with her character in the show, as well as, her real-life involvement with the spinal research campaign Big Idea. CM: You started acting at very young age - is it true that your mother purposely brought you to an agent who was most likely to turn kids down? What was it like to find out you were accepted? VM: Yup. She did not want me in the industry at all. She is okay with it now; however, I will always have those memories of us driving to auditions in massive traffic and her saying, “you do not have to

do this, we can turn around right now.” Of course my response was always, “nope, I do not want to turn around.” I was so excited. CM: You already have an impressive roster of shows that you have acted in, such as Gilmore Girls, Without a Trace, and Dexter just to name a few. What are some of the most memorable experiences you had during those projects? What was the most challenging? VM: Well, on Gilmore Girls the challenge was the seven-page scenes with massive amounts of fastpaced dialogue. On Dexter, the challenge was not getting completely captivated by John Lithgow in a scene and forgetting my line. On Without a Trace, the challenge was not getting distracted by my little sister Laura Marano. In fact, Without a Trace might be my favorite because I got to work with Laura.

for-the-sake-of-rebellion rich girl, to where she is now, which is so giving and will do anything for her friends and for her family, it is funny to me. I would never have thought that character in the pilot would be the character who Bay is now. CM: With the show introducing tough topics like campus rape, how has this affected your role and you personally? VM: That greatest thing about that storyline is that we do not know who is in the right or who is in the wrong. It is kind of terrifying to play a story like that. To play a story that does not have a strong point of view is frightening beyond all words because you risk not actually making a point with your story. It something that has changed the character of a Bay for the rest of her life, and I think it resonated so well with people because of the fact that it was unclear. CM: Switched at Birth is currently in its 4th season - can you tell us about your character Bay Kennish? VM: Bay is never one to hide her emotions, she wear them on her sleeve and tells people how she feels and tells people her opinion. That being said, she never thinks anything through. She definitely doesn’t think before she speaks. CM: How has Bay developed/changed throughout the show’s storyline? VM: She changed a lot! It is crazy. I think it is awesome and cool. You seldom get to do that with a character – drastically change them over the course of four years. It is funny to me because she was always a character – and still is a character – who takes two steps forward and one step back, but I think that is what people like about her. She is very flawed. She is not perfect, but she has such good intentions. To think of where she started off, when she was this spoiled little self-centered, rebellious-

They took four young men and implanted them with something called an epidural stimulator at the bottom of their spines. They can now independently make movements as well as have bowel and bladder control, sexual function, and are able to regulate their temperature. It’s incredible! The campaign is called the Big Idea and the next phase of the research is to fund 36 participants to be studied and they are half way to their goal. STROBING It’s the latest makeup trend that’s got everyone buzzing: strobing. But what exactly is it and why are people strobing instead of going the way of the Kardashian’s popular highlighting and contouring approach? It’s a makeup technique that’s all about highlighting to create the perfect glow. Unlike contouring, which focuses on strategically adding shadows to your face, strobing brightens up the skin by letting light enhance your features. The results are more natural. However, some people say that strobing is a contouring technique for the lazy, which we think is still up for debate! Done correctly, you’ll achieve a dewy, super healthy glow by using a powder or liquid illuminator to only accentuate spots that the sun naturally hits--definitely not all over your face. If contouring ever seemed too out of your reach, give strobing a shot. Don’t delay any longer and get your strobing glow on!

OUR STROBING FAVORITES THE RIGHT WAY TO STROBE:

1

First step - prep, prep, prep! Moisturize your skin followed by apply a primer. For regular skin types, we recommend using an illuminating primer that will give you maximum glow. But we recommend regular primer for oily skin types. Mary Kay Facial Highlighting Pen - $18.00

2

Choose a highlighter shade that works best for your skin tone.

3

Next, start strobing by applying cream/liquid/powder highlighter to the bridge of your nose, center of your forehead, cheekbones, chin, cupid’s-bow, inner corner of your eyes ,and below your brow bone.

4

Blend: Finish off the look by making sure everything’s incorporated flawlessly.

Today’s Trending Solutions to Keeping You HYDRATED Written by Katrina Frolov

The importance of hydration and water intake has been steadily over-stressed lately - perhaps in part due to the rising summer temperatures. Our social feeds are bombarded with articles that insist on how delicious water is - how necessary it is for the hydration of our cells and the glow of our skin. We know, we know - it’s one of the best things for our bodies! Judge us if you will, but not everyone’s taste buds are that easily satisfied. In its many forms, the benefits of water are absolutely indisputable and widely known enough for us to not repeat them here. However, if you’re expected to drink one to four liters a day depending on your body composition (according to the USDA) for the rest of your life - wouldn’t you want a little variety when it comes to your hydration regimen?

COCO5

Luckily, if you share those sentiments, there are more than enough options on the market that could serve as intermittent water replacements and supplements. For instance, have you heard of Coco5? Developed by a team of sports medicine

FAT Water

For those of us who are the first to test out a trending product, FAT water, developed by Dave Asprey (the very same responsible for the Bulletproof coffee madness), is the newest concoction to claim increased levels of hydration and added energy. According to their inventor, the trick is in mixing droplets of medium chain triglycerides. We know what you’re thinking, but these fats are typically just burnt off in your system. The concept of the drink is that the presence of these fats allows for easier absorption of the water and a bonus of energy. It also comes in different flavors!

If you’ve got the water part down and are looking to boost your body’s rejuvenation instead, a trending supplement is charcoal. Known for it’s detoxifying qualities, charcoal binds itself to the toxins in your body and assists them with making an exit. Just be careful not to overdo this one - once or twice a week is what’s typically recommended for the best results.

JUICE SERVED HERE Charcoal Lemonade

When all is said and done, there’s really no long term replacement for water. While the above can offer temporary solace to those who find water tasteless, they’ll just have to get used to it like everybody else. Pick a type of water that fits you - ours is Essentia Water, a 9.5pH alkaline water with added electrolytes and extra smooth taste. Start introducing it into your system on a regular basis and work your way up to where your body’s intake needs to be. You’ll see a remarkable difference, especially if you cut out the sugary drinks that throw your calorie counter into a frenzy.

ESSENTIA 9.5 pH Water

Think of it this way, it’s refreshing, it’s what your cells crave, it’s what your skin needs, and it’s calorie free. Winner! COM POS UR E M AG AZIN E. C O M

hen asked to share his most careerdefining moment, Kendrick Sampson has a rather curious response: “I’m not sure if I’ve had one yet.” We meet Sampson coming off of a major announcement of his new recurring role on ABC’s record-breaking drama, How to Get Away with Murder, all while still riding the coattails of welldeserved praise for his work alongside industry heavy-hitters, David Tennant and Anna Gunn, in FOX’s thrilling murder mystery, Gracepoint, and of course for his breakout performance as Jesse in CW’s heartthrob hit, The Vampire Diaries. He has even started his own production company, Sampson Studios, under which he himself has written a variety of scripts, including a crime drama, a psychological thriller, and several science-fiction plots. He plans to build development teams and push these projects into production when the time is right. Talk about career definition! Yet, although deeply grateful for his strong start in Hollywood, the ever-humble Sampson is the first to acknowledge that he has much room to grow. He modestly shares with us that he has not yet accomplished what he’s set out to do, but the power is in the process. “I learn so many things from each project. I get more and more confident in what I don’t know. I love watching some of the people who I consider masters in their craft get uncomfortable and deal with the same problems [with which I deal]. Most of all, I learn more and more effective communication and effective collaboration.” Observation is his M.O., and listening, learning is the name of his game. He is a forever-student of his surroundings, always

seeking more from interesting people and concepts around him. It seems to us that the enviable position he finds himself in, as a young rising star, is no accident, but a product of strong partnership, practiced patience, and true passion. A Houston native, Sampson was born into a creative environment. His passion for the arts is rooted in the love of music he developed at a young age, when his mother would play the piano for him. “Piano speaks to my soul…[it] takes me to another world.” This early artistic exploration instilled in him a natural charisma and a deep desire for expression. However, the suburbs of Houston proved to be too small a pond for this big fish. Sampson sought challenges greater than the confines of his hometown community, which led him to seek out an agent and kick-start an acting career. Today, Sampson resides in Los Angeles and continues to, quite successfully, feed his passion for performance and hone his craft of storytelling. “I love creating and developing the character, figuring out commonalities, and learning from the character… There’s nothing better than when the character settles into you, and you feel free. I want to grow in that freedom, depth and build my endurance.” Since day one, Sampson has been a man of intent, and he wastes no opportunity to educate himself as a creative professional. “I sit and watch… It’s fascinating what you can learn from sitting and watching when the cameras are, and aren’t, rolling.” Currently, on the set of How to Get Away with Murder, Sampson seems to have found a gold mine of the type of edifying interactions he craves, working with widely respected executive producer, Shonda Rhimes, and Emmy-nominated cast mate,

than sacrificing time and resources to help others. There is nothing more healing and beneficial for the person receiving and for the person giving.” As far as Sampson is concerned, learning and growth are necessary in all aspects of one’s being, as a professional, as a person. As flattering as he finds his recent heartthrob status (have you SEEN those hazel eyes?), Sampson challenges himself to take responsibility and use it, first and foremost, as a means for encouragement and positivity. Now THAT is a heartthrob.

Viola Davis. “I am having so much fun and learning so much. I love watching and learning from the entire cast, producers, writers, directors, crew etc… We have a lot of constructive conversations. I think that’s my favorite part. Everyone is so intelligent, and I love hearing their input.” Naturally, Sampson’s enthusiasm for engagement extends beyond the set, as he embraces social media, philanthropic platforms, and his faith to communicate with his supporters. Sampson values the opportunity to inspire those who follow his journey, sharing as he feels is “beneficial and entertaining.” He strives to continue his social dialogue with those who are listening and to be a positive influence in their lives. This includes using his public voice in support of social issues such as Isis refugee relief, Black Lives Matter, clean water programs, and anti-bullying. Rooted in his Christian faith, Sampson’s passion for others and for community drives his motivations and focus on finding the good and the purpose in every situation. “I think there is nothing more important

Beautiful on the inside and outside, Kendrick Sampson is a name we can get behind. With his easy southern attitude and cool, sexy confidence, Sampson embodies a refreshing new face of young Hollywood. A role model for all of us as we, too, discover the forever-students within ourselves and seek to be present in our conversations with one another. As his career continues to take off, Sampson leads his captivated audience into building a wider vocabulary for shared art and united faith. “The more humble I am, the more confident I am. It makes me an effective collaborator by constantly reminding me that I can do so much more with others than I could ever get done alone.” Let’s all take a page from Sampson’s book and aspire to “stay grounded and seek humility.” It certainly has worked out for him. STRAUBMUELLER words, what would they be? SS: Minimal, clean, sexy, fascinating, avant-garde CM: Do you think you’ll ever expand into other accessories or have you found your forever niche?

Designer Profile

L

uxury handbag designer Susie Straubmueller recently hosted a preview of her latest designs at the Chateau Marmont on Sunset Blvd. I was beyond delighted to meet the woman behind these must have, one-of-a kind clutches and totes. To say I was in awe of this woman is an understatement. In her search to find the perfect leather belt to designing handbags in exotic skins and innovative details, Susie Straubmueller has made herself an instant success. We check in with Susie to find out more about the woman behind the bags.

CM: Who is the Susie Straubmueller woman? SS: The Susie Straubmueller is a no muss, no fuss type of woman who loves exclusive, interesting, quality pieces that can easily be worn with any outfit. She knows exactly what she wants and how to wear it. CM: What actress, supermodel or socialite is wearing your handbag? SS: Supermodel Erin Wasson is currently wearing her Susie Straubmueller handbag. She is the Susie Straubmueller woman ;)

CM: When we chatted, you told me you fell into the world of luxury handbag design completely by accident. Would you mind sharing that story with our readers?

CM: You source your leather from the factory of Chanel and Dior in Italy- do you find inspiration from powerhouse brands like these?

SS: I was on the hunt for that perfect belt… One that was fresh and different. With an unsuccessful attempt to find one on the market, I in turn designed one for myself. With a design in my mind and hand, I took it over to a local leather craftsman. I was so excited about “my” custom design that he challenged me to make it myselfand that’s when I immediately fell in love with the art of leather crafting. Not only did I acquire the skills to craft belts, but also to craft leather handbags. I have a love for texture, so naturally I gravitated to working with genuine exotic skins. My passion for both leather crafting and genuine exotic skins spurred me to further hone my skills in the art of leather crafting/tanning and design in Colombia and Italy (Chanel/Christian Dior factory).

SS: Absolutely. It was truly a breath of fresh air to learn that Chanel and Dior continue the tradition of handcrafted leather handbags-from start to finish. It was such an honor to leave the factory with a piece of their

history, knowledge, passion, and talent. I learned that it’s about keeping the design clean, simple, and beautiful… And to finish each design with the best materials and leather artisans. CM: Your textiles and designs are very unique. How do you develop these designs and what sets yours apart from other luxury handbag lines? SS: I love to design handbags that are timeless with unique minute innovative details. I produce small quantities so that I can play with interesting skin finishes and so it becomes exclusive and sometimes collectible pieces. Also, I tend to stay away from trends as the designs can be too busy and it’s something that every person/store will be carrying. CM: I love the fact that each collection is limited edition. Every girl wants to feel like they have that one of a kind piece. Does that make it challenging to develop new and innovative designs? How do you keep up the creativity? SS: Designing that “perfect” handbag has always been a challenge and always will be… It’s a good thing I love challenges. First and foremost, I love to draw inspiration from countries that are known for their innovative designs and concepts such as France and Italy. I love love LOVE visiting and purchasing from their tanneries as they will always have avant-garde finishes or techniques that I have never seen before. At times, this makes it even MORE challenging for me to design a handbag. It is a MUST to compliment these gorgeous skins. The design has to

be just as innovative and beautiful as the Italian/French skins. CM: If I wanted a customized one of a kind Susie Straubmueller handbag, what would be the process of getting one? SS: First, we would work together on figuring which handbag style is missing from the closet. Second, we work on how often and when the client will be carrying it. Is it an everyday bag? Travel bag? Business bag? Flirty bag? Collectible? The list goes on.. Once we figure the silhouette, I present 2-3 designs with colors/ skins desired that were discussed in step two. Once we choose, the skins will be custom tanned and a prototype of the handbag will be made. When all is approved, the beautiful custom Susie Straubmueller will be delivered in a custom Lucite box. Time for custom handbags: 4-6 months. Time to handcraft a custom handbag:15-20 hours. CM: Of all the gorgeous handbags you’ve designed, which bag would you say was your Holy Grail moment? Hands down, my Ma Vie tote. My tote was one of the first bags I had produced with the highest level craftsmanship and finest exotic leathers. The completion of this bag, with my exact specifications made me very proud. CM: What’s in Susie Straubmueller’s bag right now? SS: My Mi Alma Alligator wallet, business cards, iphone, surface tablet, Celine sunglasses, mini sketch pad, pencils, La roche posay sunscreen. Must HAVE: La Roche Posay Sunscreen, Blanc Violette Eau de Parfum by Histoires de Parfums, Biologique Recherche Masque Vivant, Le Volume de Chanel mascara CM: Where do you see your brand going in the next few years? SS: I hope to have more widespread exposure to the clients that have discerning tastes in accessories. One day possibly worldwide) COM POS UR E M AG AZIN E. C O M

ost of us are endlessly and shamelessly entangled in celebrity culture. Our feeds are filled with their engagements, Twitter feuds and rehab stints, so it’s no surprise that when our favorites decide to tie the knot - we want to know every detail. While there is no shortage of recent weddings to pick from, here are a few that were our absolute favorites. Let’s begin with the picture-perfect fairy tale that was Nicky Hilton and James Rothschild’s wedding this summer. Everything from the Kensington Palace venue, to the Maison Valentino gown, and

celebrity guest list was reminiscent of a modern day royal affair. Hilton met her husband-to-be at a 2011 wedding of Petra Ecclestone and businessman James Stunt in Rome. It was love at first sight, according to the heiress, who explains that she and Rothschild are very similar in nature and enjoy the same things mainly, avoiding the hectic social scene and being homebodies. Rothschild proposed while on summer vacation in Italy in 2014, after receiving her father’s permission. It came as no surprise to anyone that in true Hilton style, the couple chose to get married in the very same place where only years before Prince William and Kate Middleton became man and wife. attendance as the maid of honor. According to the press, her boyfriend Thomas Gross was also at the event. The rest of the guests included the bride’s aunts Kim and Kyle Richards, stars of Bravo’s Real Housewives of Beverly Hills; Chelsea Clinton, the daughter of presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton and former president Bill Clinton; and others. Judging by the photos touted across social media, the exquisitely planned event was something for the history books. We wouldn’t have expected anything less since both the bride and groom’s families are some of the wealthiest on both side’s of the pond. And how about Guy Ritchie’s wedding to long-time fiancée Jacqui Ainsley? This star studded event, although less formal and traditional, had all the elements of a stunning, memorable affair. The setting was the couple’s country estate in Wiltshire, England, a home Ritchie inherited after the dissolution of his marriage to Madonna. The bride and groom opted for a “glamping” experience, arranging white teepees and tents for their guests to sleep in. Brad Pitt at Guy Ritchie’s Wedding

The bride, who also happens to share three children with Ritchie (Rafael, 3; Rivka, 2; Levi, 13 months) wore a beautiful gown by Phillipa Lepley. In attendance were the likes of Brad Pitt, David Beckham, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley and Jason Statham, Henry Cavill and others. Guests teased the public with social media posts of the happy couple and group selfies from the event. Although Ritchie’s ex-wife Madonna was not in attendance, their son Rocco, 14, walked the glowing bride down the aisle. The groom later joked that he had waited for some time for his bride to come down. The photos shared by the guests and newlyweds reveal an intimate setting devoid of the usual stuffiness that sometimes accompanies a traditional setting. Instead, the guests danced the night away and then snuggled into

casual wear to watch a screening of Ritchie’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E” on their lawn. Sounds like the perfect ending to a perfect day! Finally, Hollywood royalty Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux tied the knot this summer in a surprise ceremony at their home in Bel Air. The entire affair was kept a secret. The staff operated under the assumption that the party was to be a birthday celebration for Theroux who was turning 44. According to multiple sources, the guests were let in on the secret, but imagine everyone else’s surprise when the pastor arrived and the real reason behind the party was revealed! While the truth couldn’t be further from it, after a highly-publicized and painful divorce from ex-husband Brad Pitt (who then notoriously shacked up with co-star, now wife Angelina Jolie around the time of the divorce), Aniston had become the symbol of spinsterhood in the eyes of the media. Cynical eyes watched her every move, her comings and goings splashed across the pages of tabloids. The bride met her husband-to-be on set in 2010, but it wasn’t until the following year that rumors of their relationship began to swirl. Theroux proposed in August 2012, after several reports by the media that the couple had split due to his unwillingness to commit (which fueled the media’s perception that a happy ending was simply not in the cards for Aniston). The ensuing three year engagement came under a lot of scrutiny from the media, with constant erroneous claims that the long engagement is a sign of an unhappy home. Notoriously private, Aniston shook off the media reports with a shrug - classy, as always. Perhaps this is why their eventual nuptials caused so much commotion and surprise. The skeptics were finally overturned and while we’re sure the media remains cynical about their happy ending, we couldn’t be more excited for the couple! The wedding guest list ranged from members of the Friends cast, to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi, John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, Jimmy Kimmel and others. Although engaged for three years, nobody had suspected that they were planning on tying the knot that day. When asked about the ceremony, Aniston was quoted admitting that the night was a special, private moment between the two of them and she planned to keep it that way. Despite us wanting to know every detail, we love everything about this! Whether scandalous or not, weddings, especially those involving our favorite celebrities, are beautiful celebrations of love. Perhaps this is why our culture is so fascinated with these moments - we’re all just romantics at heart. T
