Fall is absolutely here and depending on where you are, summer has officialIy been packed away into storage! In this issue, we now unpack fall inspirations from the eye catching red carpets looks of the Emmys as we also head into the SAG and Golden Globes awards season. All eyes have been and will be on fashionable readyto-wear pieces (pg 19) and of course gowns that will make you envy every sparkling detail and flowing fabric a seen in the editorial “Tidal Waves” (pg 83). We also bring you noteworthy beauty looks and products that will surely have you grab a bold lipstick to always look camera ready. The Emmys also left its mark this year celebrating the works of numerous creatives and the TV shows that they tirelessly work on - shows with compelling stories like, Orange is the New Black that was recently nominated for Outstanding Drama Series, amongst others categories. They give us a chance to fall in love with our favorite characters like Poussey Washington who is ingeniously portrayed by our cover girl Samira Wiley (pg 77). With Poussey’s outspoken charm combined with her caring convictions, those attributes are not too far off from her off-screen personality as we have learned from interviewing the loveable actress. We also look to the hot shows to watch this fall as actor David Harewood (pg 13) gives us a little hint that his character Hank Henshaw has a deep secret in the all-new Supergirl. But if you’re looking for something with a bit more grit, the contrasting drama to the true elegance of Joanna Going (pg 47) will catch you by surprise as she describes what it’s like to play a character just coming out of heroin addiction and how she garners true life experiences as a parent. Then we take it to the big screen with actress Stef Dawson (The Hunger Games, pg 7) and actor Dexter Darden (The Maze Runner: Scorch Trials, pg 41) as they both praise the writing for their respective franchise films. Both also attest to the true comradery that they have with their fellow screen mates that makes us want to be their BFFs too (pretty please?). With so much fall eye candy to pour over in these pages, go ahead and grab your favorite warm bevy and get situated in your most comfortable seat because, like Stef Dawson told us, “nothing better than rugging up on a cold day”. We agree Stef.

CM: What was life like growing up in Australia? What is your fondest memory? SD: I think I had a pretty awesome childhood. Growing up in such a beautiful country, living amongst a lot of nature had a great effect on me. My sister and I were animal lovers and spent every second we had playing with them, adopting them or climbing trees. The best gift I was ever given was a horse. Some of the best memories I have are with our horses. My sister and I felt so free and wild with horses. They are such beautiful and intelligent creatures and there is so much trust involved and such a strong bond. We would saddle up and pack a lunch and ‘go bush’, pretty much go exploring and see where we ended up. On a hot day, we would go bareback and find a dam or a river and get the horses to jump right in. One memory I have is sitting out under the stars at night, leaning against my horses legs, thinking how huge the universe is and thinking there must be some kind of plan to all the madness.

7

CO MP O SU R E MA G AZI N E.COM

CM: Your childhood must have involved a lot of horse riding as you’re also known to be an award-winning equestrian! What sparked your love for horses? Were you a competitive horse vaulter? SD: After riding a horse at a circus as a kid, I fell in love with them and begged for the longest time, proving that I would take great care of one until I finally got one! The horse vaulting was a strange twist of fate. Vaulting is ‘gymnastics on horseback’, kind of dancing on a horse to music, like something you would see in a circus actually. They happened to do it where we kept the horses and I got hooked. It involved a ton of discipline and physical strength, balance, trust and fearlessness, always pushing yourself to another level. This was my first taste of performing as it definitely was a kind of dance and I started doing competitions. I loved to just lose myself in the music and totally transport myself and an audience into a story or a feeling through vaulting. I ended up winning a national competition at age 13 which was pretty cool. I injured my knees from jumping off such a

great height that I had to stop for a bit and that is when acting really took over as my greatest passion. CM: Horse vaulting seems like a very high risk and physically strenuous sport - is this indicative of the kind of roles that you like to play? SD: Definitely! I think vaulting gave me a kind of fearlessness that stayed with me. I was a really small girl (still am haha) but working with horses, such powerful creatures and communicating with them challenged me to interact with something that could be bigger and more powerful than me and it was a really cool thing to find a way of working with them. The vaulting took it to another level, from a young age, working very hard at something, which was I guess pretty dangerous and conquering any fears to get up there each time. I think yes, I am often drawn to roles that are physical in nature, would love to do more of them, I enjoy a physical challenge and most physical ones start with a mental one too, which I’m always drawn to and fascinated by in every role I play. CM: What inspired your journey to be an actress? Did you always have Hollywood on your mind? SD: I have always been fascinated by people. My parents are doctors and I grew up with an understanding that there are so many reasons why a person ends up the way they do. My parents are both incredibly empathetic and encouraged me to ask questions and I guess I was always intrigued by humanity and why [we are] the way we are. We get to live a thousand lives as actors and I enjoy that. People’s stories intrigue me, particularly stories of struggle, which I think everyone relates to. I never had much of a concept of Hollywood, even when I started acting it didn’t really appeal to me to go to Hollywood but the roles drew me overseas to the US industry, the mecca of it all, where so much is happening and such interesting roles. It certainly was a shock, very difficult at times and I knew only one person but I was fiercely determined and the joy of doing what I loved motivated me to just go for it. There is something magical about losing yourself in

a role each time and giving voice to stories. CM: How did you prepare for The Hunger Games audition? What was going through your mind when you received the call confirming your role as Annie Cresta? SD: I loved the books, my best mate introduced me to them and I was so drawn to the world Suzanne had created. Such an important message about humanity and love and our ability to survive despite the odds. I had fallen in love with Annie in the books, actually saw myself in that role immediately. I wasn’t in a good place emotionally at the time I auditioned for Annie. I was dealing with grief and a lot of hardship and very much related to her brokenness at the time. Annie’s survivalism comes from within her own mind, trying to keep going and I just tapped into my own feelings of that and the vulnerability I felt while trying to keep it together. I guess I just knew her inside out and the world, really tried to stay true to how I saw her in the book and stuck to that vision for the audition. Deb Zane, the casting director was so incredible to work with it, it was effortless to be vulnerable in front of her and make bold choices. I had this funny feeling that is so rare, felt so strongly this was my role but never sure. When I got the call I got chills, I knew my life had changed somehow and I was so ecstatic. There is this crazy picture of me my friend took in that moment where I look like I am about to cry! It was truly the best thing that has ever happened to me and I am forever grateful.

any idea what was going on. We had an absolute ball on set together! I adore him, he is so hilarious and kind hearted. Constantly makes me laugh, one minute we would muck around playing tricks on each other then the next minute we were able to instantly sink into the scene and block everything out. We had such a great bond, a lot of trust and I felt completely at ease in the role with him. He is such an incredible actor and has such a kind heart to go with it, an absolute superstar that’s for sure. I am so grateful it was Sam, it was a truly wonderful experience. CM: The trailer of Mockingjay Part 2 opens with the stunning scene of Annie and Finnick’s wedding. Can you take us through that moment and what it means to the rest of the Mockingjay story? SD: The Hunger Games story is so full of great tragedy and pain and yet as Snow said ‘Hope is the only thing stronger than fear’. Within a world that is so dark, the thing that all people hold on to in times of struggle, particularly war, is hope. Annie and Finnick’s wedding is a symbol of that, hope for the future, light in the dark times and evidence that life will go on, that the one thing the capitol can never take is love. Annie and Finnick never stopped fighting and hoping that they would be reunited. Their beautiful love story, despite the odds is a symbol of hope to all the other characters. It is an important moment for everyone, as it reminds them what they are really fighting for.

CM: Was it instant connection with your co-star Sam Claflin who plays your love interest Finnick Odair?

CM: You’ve been busy working on other projects like The Lennon Report, Creedmoria, Paper Store. Can you tell us more about your roles in them?

SD: Sam is the best! We did have an instant connection. He reached out to me on twitter and welcomed me to the family which was so lovely. We actually met at The Catching Fire premiere! We had this really cool moment at the premiere when we finally found each other, where I yelled out ‘SAM!’ and he yelled out ‘STEF” and we ran over to each other and had a massive hug. Everyone probably thought we were crazy, haha, no one had

SD: All three of these movies were shot in NY! I am now a little bit in love with NY. Creedmoria is a coming of age story set in Queens in the 80’s. I play a teenage girl, ‘Candy’ who is breaking out of so many things that hold her back in life, family, dickhead boss, controlling boyfriend and becoming the person she knows she can be. Candy is such a ray of sunshine in a pessimistic world yet has a total rebellious streak. It is going to be such a charming

film, so full of heart. It was absolutely a labor of love from everyone involved and that just comes through the screen with this film. The second film The Paper Store is about a gifted university student that is let down by a system controlled by finances. As she can’t afford to study, she becomes a ghost writer for papers and ends up in a tumultuous relationship with one of her ‘customers’, played by Penn Badgley fueled by their passion for ideas and each other which ultimately clash at times. Penn Badgley and Richard Kind were so wonderful to work with in this movie. She then seeks revenge on him and the whole system, outing him through the papers, to surprising results. The Lennon Report, is a film about the events the night John Lennon was shot, through the eyes of those who were right there. I play Barbara Kammerer, a young nurse who was practically running the ER that night and was hands on with the events. I got to know the real Barbara, who is now like family to me and it was such an honor to play such an incredible lady. It really is a glimpse into how the world stood still on this night and how many lives John Lennon touched. It is also a celebration of those who often go uncelebrated in tragedy, like Barb, nurses, doctors and people who have the responsibility of breaking a story like that which will affect so many lives. CM: Your Twitter bio says that you’re a tomboy in a dress. What does that exactly mean and what was your recent NYFW experience like? Who are some of your favorite designers? If you were to start your own fashion line, what would your first collection look like? SD: Haha, I think I wrote that Twitter title the first day I had to go to a red carpet type thing. That’s exactly what I felt like!! I have never been the sort of girl that aspired to wearing gowns or dressing up, it was a new world to me! I felt like Cinderella going to a ball but knowing I would most likely face-plant imminently. I think I will always be that nature loving girl who would prefer to trample through the bush than tip toe in a pair of heels, but I now enjoexploring it. Fashion week was a little mind blowing for me. It was chaotic and fascinating at

11

the same time. I have always had a love for design and was so impressed by their beautiful creations. I am now getting more into fashion and really starting to form what I am drawn to - fashion is an art form I now love! My tomboy ways are balanced by a great appreciation of design now. If I was to start my own line it may have to involve scarves and coats. I’m obsessed with scarves and coats!! Nothing better than rugging up on a cold day. I totally live in the wrong area for that. Some of my favorite designers include Dior, Valentino and Christian Siriano that are just incredibly beautiful and feminine but I have also always loved Vivienne Westwood for her boldness and breaking the mold. I was introduced to some incredible new designers including Max Gengos, the quirky Ground Zero and a fellow Aussie Rebecca Vallance, who I am now massive fan of. CM: Outside of acting, what else are you passionate about/ involved in? SD: There are so many other things that I love and want to get involved in. One thing I hope to get more involved in is being an advocate for mental health and the homeless. Mental health is something dear to my heart and I think we need to talk about this subject and deal with it so much more. Homelessness and so many other tragedies I think also are often a result of mental health issues. It is such an important subject and so complex and unique to every individual to treat and we must talk about it. I have also been a long time supporter of Vietnamese charities such as ‘Blue Dragon’ who work with street kids in Hanoi and give them the skills and education to stay off the streets. I learned to sing in Vietnamese and raised money being a lil white girl, it was a bit of a spectacle I guess and I loved being able to give back a bit. Singing is another passion of mine that I would like to get back into. I trained in opera but haven’t sung or trained in it in ages but I really love it.

ntelligent, well spoken, humble, thoughtful, and stylish are just few words to describe David Harewood. Composure team had the privilege of spending an afternoon with David and learn of his past and current works, from having worked with legendary Judy Dench to more recently with Claire Danes in Showtime’s Homeland. You can see David in CBS’s highly anticipated Supergirl, but you just as well might catch him skateboarding along Santa Monica boardwalk.

DH: The mythology surrounding the character of Hank Henshaw is deep and pretty awesome. Everyone knows that eventually he goes on to be Cyborg Superman, but we’re catching up with him a long way before that happens. We’re taking the view that he was not the most pleasant guy, which is a lot of fun to play! But there is a big secret that Hank is keeping, something that the audience will be intrigued to find out and I think comic book fans will be extremely excited to discover!

CM: What was it like coming off of a show like Homeland and working next to actors like Damian Lewis and Claire Danes?

CM: What is Hank’s relationship with Supergirl, played by Melissa Benoist?

DH: In truth, I was a little worried when they told me my time on the show was over. I had enjoyed being a part of it so much and had also learned a great deal from watching and working with Claire Danes that for a while I thought I would never experience such professional job satisfaction again! I guess I felt there was so much more to explore with the relationship, but it just didn’t happen. Funnily enough though, when I came back to America the following year, I was so encouraged by the amount of people, both professionally and on the street who said to me “Damn, why did they kill you!” It brought a smile to my face every time! CM: The highly anticipated Supergirl will be premiering on CBS soon . What can we expect from the show’s storyline? Will it be action packed? DH: Supergirl works on so many different levels, there’s a lot of action but it also operates as a workplace drama so I think there’s something in it for everyone. When I showed my kids the pilot, they couldn’t believe it wasn’t a movie! “This is going to be on every week?” said my daughter! It’s a very entertaining show and great family viewing. Funny and punchy, it’ll be a must-watch Monday night TV. CM: What can you tell us about your character Hank Henshaw? Is he anything like how some of the comics depict him?

15

CO MP O SU R E MA G AZI N E.COM

DH: Hank’s relationship with Supergirl is a fractious one. Her arrival on the scene complicates matters for Hank as a rookie superhero is not only a liability but she also acts as a magnet attracting all manner of super-baddies to National City. But you know what they say about ‘protesting too much’! Hank’s frustration with Kara’s arrival points to something Hank himself is keeping secret about, exactly what that is will be revealed as the show progresses. CM: “Free in Deed” was just awarded “Best Film” at the Venice Film Festival, congratulations! Who is Abe Wilkins to you? Being that it is based on actual events, how did you prepare for your role? DH: The preparation to play Abe was really very interesting as I myself have a very secular upbringing, yet I found myself reading and digesting both the Old and New Testaments with a fair degree of relish. I’m ashamed to admit that I hadn’t really studied the Bible much, and I became fascinated with just how violent certain passages were, also, I had no idea so many of today’s sayings originated from biblical sayings. It really was a journey for me, at times I could see how Shakespeare must have formulated some of his ideas for his plays from the good book too. I also lost a ton of weight! Something the director Jake Mahaffy asked me to do as much as possible. I ate a lot of soup and cut out booze for a month, and [the weight] it just dropped off me. I was also running

yet he had several scenes with Olivia Coleman, who is just the most wonderful actress so that was good enough for me! But as the rewrites came in I actually didn’t die, in fact, I had more and more scenes with Olivia and eventually our characters were quite inseparable. We laughed a hell of a lot! She really is a pleasure to work with and the show itself became something that we all really took possession of. We began to offer up different ideas than had been on the page, almost as if the script was a living, breathing organism. It was beautifully directed by Susanne Bier, who kept the whole thing in her head in the most incredible way. I cannot wait to see it. CM: What’s ahead for David Harewood?

everyday. It helped me think. CM: Some of your other projects include Tulip Fever, Grimsby, and the miniseries The Night Manager - can you tell us more about them? Can you share any details that the audience should pay attention to? DH: Grimsby is set to be very funny! Working with Sacha Baron Cohen was a real treat as I had no idea he was going to be so collaborative. If you had a better idea or if you threw something in he would seize on it and really allow you the freedom to explore it. Tulip Fever was a strange one for me as I really didn’t have much to say but when someone offers you a couple of scenes with the wonderful Judy Dench you don’t really say no! I really just did it to work with her, and I wasn’t disappointed. She’s very giggly! And although it wasn’t the biggest role I’ve ever played, I felt it was worth it just to play opposite such a legend. Similarly with The Night Manager my character died in the first draft I read

DH: What’s ahead for me? Very much looking forward to Supergirl finally hitting the screens! We’ve been shooting for 2-3 months now, and I think we all need to get the show out of our heads and in front of the audience. I think people are going to really dig the show! I’d love to get back on stage at some point. Perhaps in London or New York, who knows but it’s difficult to look beyond Supergirl right now. It’s been a very busy year for me. I’ve hardly had a month off so between you and me I’m actually looking forward to just sitting at home for a while and playing dad! CM: Outside of acting, how do you spend your time? Do you have other passion projects? DH: Supergirl takes up quite a lot of my time here in Los Angeles, but I’m also trying to learn a language (Spanish) and the other day I bought myself an electric skateboard! It is unbelievably fun, and I try to get down to Santa Monica whenever I can to carve up and down the boardwalk. I can get up to about 25 miles an hour on it! It’s a pretty cool way of getting around town too! Not so sure my agent would be too happy to read that I’m flying around on an electric long board but hey ho! At least I’m wearing the right gear! Supergirl premieres Mon, Oct. 26 8:30/7:30c on CBS

FASHION

stacy twilley designer of

TWILLEY ATELIER Fashion designer, Stacy Twilley is no stranger to the luxury market coming from 15 years of experience as the co-founder of Modern Luxury Media. With such knowledge and experience, Stacy takes on the fashion stage creating collections for what she discovered that real women want: effortless and fresh wearable pieces delivered with superb craftsmanship. CM: Given your unique background in the magazine world- what has influenced you as a designer? ST: Having started so many magazines in so many cities, you really get a sense of both the differences in each city with how women dress and the commonalities of what they look for in the clothing. What I really set out to do with my line in particular was to make clothing that would appeal to the base levels of what I think my customers, what “my girl” is looking for high quality classic pieces that they can then make their own. Like the girl in Dallas who wears my dress is going to wear them fundamentally different than the girl in San Francisco. The one in Chicago is going to wear them much differently going to be an English professor and he thought I was gothan the girl in Miami. They are all looking for the same kind ing to be in Africa with my long braids coming back from of ideas in things. They want to look as elegant as their mothstudying tribes or something. Long story short, it was sort ers and as cool as their of a need at the moment. We were both disenchanted with daughters but not dress what we were doing in school. We had an idea and went for as either one of them. it. Honestly, the timing was right. It was the beginning of That is a niche that I the 90’s and that whole luxury wave hit. We looked at it found missing. more anthropologically. There’s a need, a market and then worked our asses off. We were young enough to not know how stupid the idea was to start a magazine from scratch CM: How did you get on our own. We were lucky we had a lot of really amazing into the fashion magazine people that we brought on early that stayed with us for world? 15 years. That’s really the reason the magazine was such a success. Brilliant editors, photographers, writers - evST: When we started the erybody who contributed to it. We tried to do something magazines we were in that nobody had done before. We were local magazines on grad school. He was geta national platform so that we could compete with Vogue, ting his PHD in AmeriCosmo and Elle. can Literature and I was getting my masters in CM: How does your inspiration translate into your collecAnthropology. Never in tion? a million years did we ever think that we would ST: I designed two kinds of collections first - Fall 2014 and do anything like that. I Spring 2015. Fall ‘15 is currently in stores and Spring ‘16 thought I was falling in is the first full spring collection. Now, we are designing Fall love with a guy that was ‘16 and as a new designer, I’m inspired by a lot of things

that all piece together. I don’t set out with “here’s my plan and I’m going after it”. Some of the inspiration comes behind me and some of it organically just comes together. Ultimately I want to end up with a collection with every piece being something I would really want to wear. If there’s a piece of clothing that I don’t necessarily like wearing, or think it doesn’t look good on me, I just wouldn’t make it. Like for example, a vest - I don’t think I could wear it with any conviction. I love it on everyone else and it’s very out there for fall. I even toyed with making one but I don’t think I could wear it. CM: How do you have the time with 3 daughters? ST: For me it’s not “this is work time, this is family time”. I’m lucky because I can do the designs from my home. With my teen girls, you have to be around yet you don’t have to be around. While I have to be available and around for them if they need me and know that I’m present, they know I have to have a life, too. And while they’re doing homework what would I be doing? Watching House of Cards, which I love. (laughs) This is the best of both worlds. How they spend their time works really well for me and it’s fun working at home because they get to see what I’m working on. One of my girls is a fit model and I take pictures of her in the clothes so I can see how something is fitting. She’s the perfect model size, it’s fun. CM: What do you think real women want? ST: I think that some designers do design to an ideal woman. And I’m not exactly sure what life she’s leading but it’s not the one I’m leading since I think I’m pretty average. My real woman likes modern but not avante garde; to look feminine, even in men’s wear or the androgynous. My woman also works hard on her body and takes care of herself and wants to reflect that and not cover herself in lots and lots of fabric. Also, real women want quality from what they purchase and that’s what I’m going after. CM: What is the future of Twilley Atelier? ST: I don’t look too far down the road to be totally honest (laughs). Like with the magazine if you ever told me that when we started it that we would have turned into 33 magazines in 14 cities and sold at the height of media sales, I would have been in shock. I would have laughed.

So I just want another success story; another successful business. I want to do it with the integrity, the spirit and the love that we did with our first business. That includes the community and family. That is why I am approaching the business by just reaching out to boutiques in key cities we want to be in. I won’t take an order just from anybody. There’s only certain boutiques I want to work with and only certain cities that I think we understand right now to really build community and service it as a community and to partner with our boutiques so that we’re not just going out for these big orders. It feels right that way. It feels like family. Like when we’re at a trunk show, my husband and my three daughters are there; the buyers get to meet my whole family. Like it or not there they are (laughs). They all contribute work - my daughters are hanging clothes back up and my husband is pouring champagne. I like that and most of these boutiques we meet with are family businesses too. They are run by people who are really putting their sweat, blood and tears into it. So there’s a commonality there that I really like and I would like to grow and service that network of family community sense. We’re at that critical point where we’re too small to do certain things yet too big not to so it’s a lot of work right now. www.twilleyatelier.com @stacytwilley

FOUR TIPS TO KEEPING YOUR LIPS LOOKING FAB ALL DAY By Nia Hicks

FALL FOR

1. Prepping your lips before applying your lipstick is as important as prepping your skin before you apply your foundation. Start by exfoliating your lips with your favorite lip scrub.

theRED

2. Next, apply a long wearing lip liner followed by a long wearing lipstick. This particular formula is designed to stay put on your puckers and has amazing staying power. 3. To perfect your pout, take your concealer and concealer brush and line around your lips. This trick cleans up any smudges or uneven edges creating a perfect pout. 4. Lastly, add translucent powder to your lips with a fluffy eye shadow brush sealing your lipstick for extra staying power. If you are prone to getting dry chapped lips, skip this step to avoid your lips from over drying.

First, I will say that the must have item of the season are the thigh high boots seen on the Fall/Winter 2015 Christian Dior Runway. Patent leather high heeled boots can look very trashy, but when designed and styled well, it simply looks high class and elegant. It is an instant upgrade to your wardrobe.

2

Thigh high boots can be very figure flattering. Pair it with a short A-line skirt and your legs will seem super slim. Wear black or dark colored boots and streamline your look!

THIGH HIGH’S THE LIMIT THERE ARE FIVE REASONS WHY WOMEN SHOULD TAKE A SECOND LOOK AT THE THIGH HIGH BOOT TREND. IT’S THE FASHIONISTA’S CURRENT OBSESSION.

3

4 5

They can be worn with skirts, dresses, skirts, pants, leggings, coats and jeans! Versatility is the key for any fashion splurge. Remember this iconic look from Sex and the City? It’s a Carrie Bradshaw do!

Thigh high boots are great when you are a good girl gone bad. Turn up your edge factor instantly. Even though thigh high boots are having an ‘On Fleek’ moment, they will keep coming back into style. So don’t throw them away!

These Boots are Made for Walking! Thigh high boots look great even if they are flat or have a low heel. They give the illusion of ‘legs for days’. With a chunky heel, you may just want to spend a whole season in them. Run (don’t walk) to get your very own today!

SUEDE! S

uede has long-been a fixture in our fall wardrobes-- less durable than leather but with a much softer feel, this staple fabric endures for a reason. This year suede made a big appearance on all the major fashion runways. Fashion designers such as Gucci, Chloe & Burberry Prorsum set the stage by sending a variety of colors, textures and styles down its runway. Pieces like the 70’s fringe jackets, tiny mini-skirts, high-waisted trousers, and a buttery-soft trench coat belted at the waist were resurrected in style. Keep a look out for similar suede pieces at more budget friendly stores like ASOS, Zara, and Nasty Gal! COM POS UR E M AG AZIN E. C O M

exter Darden’s character Frypan is a fan favorite in The Maze Runner and the recent The Scorch Trials. During our short time with Dexter at the Composure studio, Dexter showed us he can act, he can dance, and most importantly, he can brighten up a room with his big and lighthearted personality. CM: What was your childhood like growing up in New Jersey? Is that where you discovered love for music? DD: I love NJ!!! I miss it so much living in LA, but I try to get back and visit as much as I can. I found my love for music in Jersey. I grew up singing in church and music was all around me. I sang my first solo when I was 3 years old in the children’s choir and I’ve been singing every since. CM: Do you have any music projects that you’re working on? DD: Yes!! I’m dropping my first single “Different Kind Of Love” very soon. I’m super excited for everyone to hear my sound and where I want to go as an artist! CM: Congrats on the premiering of The Scorch Trials! In what ways is The Scorch Trials different than The Maze Runner? What exactly is the scorch? DD: Well The Scorch Trials picks up right where Maze Runner left off, so the journey continues and it’s an exciting ride! The Scorch is the area that we are now left to face outside of the maze. It’s a dangerous land that’s been destroyed and burnt to pieces with scary creatures called Cranks! CM: It seemed like there was a lot of running involved in The Maze Runner! How does the action in the sequel compare? What kind of training was involved? DD: This movie was way more difficult than The Maze Runner. We were mostly outside in New

43

CO MP O SU R E MA G AZI N E.COM

Mexico, which is high altitude and running up sand dunes was tough. Fortunately, we had 2 weeks of training with our stunt team to get us in shape! CM: Now that everyone is out of the Glade, how does this affect relationships amongst the Gladers? DD: I think we are all a bit afraid. We are just relying on each other and we are trusting as a group if we stay together we can survive. CM: It’s obvious that Frypan has become a fan favorite. How does Frypan’s role develop and what aspects were you hoping to convey the most in your character? What is behind his real name “Siggy”? DD: I’m just soooo happy that the fans love Fry. He’s been so much fun to play and I hope we can just develop him more and more as the story continues. I love being able to tap into his emotional side as well as providing good laughter in tough situations. “Siggy” comes from Sigmund Freud, because all the Gladers are named after Geniuses!. CM: The theme of brotherhood is often referred to when speaking of your cast mates on and off screen - what do you think has been the biggest proponent of that? DD: Just how much we love each other. That can’t be taught or faked. It just organically happened with all of us and we are sooo lucky that it did. CM: We’re excited that a third film of the series, The Death Cure, has been confirmed and that Wes Ball will return to direct. What has it been like working under his direction? DD: Wes is a genius! WE are so fortunate to have him captain our ship. He is a creative visionary and everything he touches turns to gold. The Death Cure is going to be really exciting and there are so many surprises in store. I can’t wait to start working on it.

CM: It’s obvious from your long list of credits that you are no stranger to TV and film! What would you say is the biggest contributing factor to your ever growing career? JG: I believe the growth in my career, of late is due to a level of maturity and life-experience I gained in the last 10 or 12 years that put me in a new, hardto-name category. I just know that the roles I am getting now are wildly fun and have a different sort of depth — or perhaps I’m just now relaxed enough to plumb these depths a little better. CM: How did your training at American Academy of Dramatic Arts make an impact in how you developed as an actress?

47

CO MP O SU R E MA G AZI N E.COM

JG: The American Academy gave me theater-based, classical training that emphasized acting as a craft, and equipped me with tangible tools to carry my craft out into the world. In addition to voice work, body work, theater history and script analysis, I was able to study with a number of different acting teachers, who taught a variety of unique acting techniques such as Strasberg, Meisner, and Hagen. It was sort of a smorgasbord of acting methods, and as a student, you were able to try them on and try them out and discover which language spoke to you. I was particularly inspired by one of my teachers, Carol Fox Prescott and continued my study with her long after graduation. Carol’s breath work techniques form the basis of my approach in my work as an actress.

CM: Your most recent projects include Netflix’s House of Cards and Kingdom with DirecTV, both of which are distributed through non-traditional TV networks. What is your view on how the landscape of the industry is changing? JG: I am personally very excited about the changes in the industry as these changes have afforded me some of the best roles of my career. The success of all of the groundbreaking shows on HBO, Showtime, AMC, and Netflix has opened the field to newcomers and challenged traditional TV networks in such a magnificent way, that there is now so much great TV to be found, it is impossible to keep up. More TV outlets mean more production, and more production means more working actors — and the newer outlets seem to be born ready to take risks. The driving force is no longer to simply run with the formula of a successful show and make a bunch more shows just like that one, but to push boundaries and find the new and original stories to tell — an enticing incentive for creative talent. Nontraditional TV networks have fostered the drama of the anti-hero — from the conflicted Tony Soprano, to drug-addicted, yet gifted and compassionate Nurse Jackie, to the deliciously villainous Frank Underwood and so many more, which has given rise to greater complexity and depth in leading characters, warts and all, across all of television. (I say leading characters because, in traditional TV of the past, it was often the guest parts on a drama that were the most fun.) These more recent flawed and struggling lead characters are the roles that actors find the most challenging, and thus, rewarding, and that the audience connects to in a more powerful way than any bright and shiny, unblemished main character.

There is also an undeniable creative freedom when a show is not beholden to commercial sponsors. I am so grateful to DirecTV for the nurturing environment and respect that they provide the artists on KINGDOM. We all agree that we are making a drama for mature audiences, and we are able to fully embody our characters on set without concerns of “Can we say that? Can we do that?” We can revel in the spectacular, profanity-rich language that is authentic to the culture depicted on our show. We can feel comfortable in the skin of our characters’ in whatever state of dress or undress they enjoy at any moment, and be true to the character in any sort of sexual encounter portrayed. This is not to say there are no contract nudity riders and parameters of taste and decency— but that boundary is fairly elastic for us.

“We can feel comfortable in the skin of our characters’ in whatever state of dress or undress they enjoy at any moment”

CM: Your role as First Lady Tricia Walker in House of Cards is such a contrast to your character Christina Kulina in Kingdom - now that Season 2 of Kingdom is premiering soon, what can we expect from Christina? Can you share how the complexity of her life develops throughout the series?

JG: In Season 1 we saw Christina get clean of heroin; in Season 2 she faces the question “Now what?” What happens after the “battle” is won? Is it ever really won? I think anyone who has ever had a connection with addiction, whether themselves or a loved one, can answer that question. In the coming episodes we explore how Christina answers it for herself. She has had so much of what is familiar, what has been her identity, stripped away; now she is staring into the mirror trying to figure out what’s left, and what is it worth? CM: Much of Christina’s focus seems to be on reconciling her relationship with her sons Jay and

Nate, played by actors Jonathan Tucker and Nick Jonas. As a mother who has a daughter, how has your real life experience played a part in your portrayal of Christina and the unique relationships she has with Jay and Nate?

passionate about?

JG: Certainly being the mother of a 12 year old has fed my understanding and imagination in portraying the mother of Jay and Nate. I have a myriad of memories and experiences, from pregnancy to the present that I can embroider upon and plug into Christina’s history. Oddly enough, I have a daughter, but I seem to always play the mother of boys — not sure what that means — maybe the universe’s way of letting me play out any hidden desire for the son I never had! But it is the actors themselves, Tucker and Nick, who really feed the relationships between Christina and her boys. We all share a genuine affection and respect. We trust each other and we trust the story that Byron Balasco has created for this family.

My daughter and I first got involved with People Assisting the Homeless (PATH) through her elementary school, raising money and awareness, cooking and serving meals to residents of PATH, participating in clean-up and improvement projects at PATH facilities, and even furnishing apartments for formerly homeless families moving into their new homes. We continue to support this amazing organization working to eradicate homelessness in Los Angeles and beyond. I encourage anyone with concerns about the epidemic of homelessness, or anyone facing homelessness to check out www. epath.org

CM: Christina Kulina isn’t the only character in the show that is battling with demons of the past and present. What do you hope to see happening in the story line? JG: Nate Kulina is wrestling with his identity, both sexual, and as a fighter, and I am eager to see how that story plays out. I would like to find out if Christina is capable of a real romantic relationship anymore. And the character of Keith, played by Paul Walter Hauser delights me — I think Christina should adopt him.

JG: I am passionate about kindness, acceptance, equal rights for all, and helping out in whatever way one can on any given day.

I am deeply concerned about the ongoing attacks on Planned Parenthood, our country’s largest provider of reproductive healthcare, and largest and longest-standing ally in reproductive rights. Of Planned Parenthood users, men and women seeking mammograms, pap smears, STD tests and treatment, cancer screenings, birth control, and family planning counseling, 75% are living below the poverty line. It is unfathomable to me that the government of the United States can be duped into seeking to undermine, defund, and deny millions of citizens the unequaled and affordable health care resource that is Planned Parenthood. CM: What’s next for Joanna Going?

CM: Not to get too ahead of ourselves, but we know that 10 episodes for Season 3 has been confirmed. Can you share anything with us in regards to what lies ahead? JG: I have no idea! Byron Balasco is coming up with what lies ahead as we speak, and we go back into production in October. I am on pins and needles waiting for that first script to come in. CM: Outside of acting, you’re also known to be active with organizations like PATH. Can you tell us more about your involvement and what else you are

hen asked to draw parallels between her personality and that of Poussey Washington’s, her character on Netflix’s hit series Orange Is the New Black, Samira modestly insists that there aren’t any. However, we’re inclined to respectfully disagree, having noted in her the charm, charisma and infectious energy we’ve all grown to love in Poussey. Just like the rest of us, Samira was drawn to the role from the moment she first saw the script. “I just read the signs and sometimes you

just connect,” she recalls, “something about the essence that you feel in a character when you first read them.” The rest is history - or rather, Netflixfilled binge days for those of us who have fallen in love with OITNB and its ensemble of personalities. Samira’s rise to this highly-scrutinized stage was a relatively quick one - the show is her first venture into acting in front of a camera. A Julliard-trained actress, Samira got the theatre bug early on and worked as a bartender to support her passion.

To this day, she regards theatre as her first love. “Because I’m not doing it and I used to do it all the time, I’m trying to find ways to pepper it into my schedule. Trying to take on workshops, whatever I can,” she says. Samira admits that her dream has always been to play Juliet, hoping that if she tells enough people, perhaps someone will give her the opportunity - “put it out into the universe,” she jokes. When the call came to audition for OITNB, Samira recalls that it was an audition like any other. A classmate from Julliard, Danielle Brooks (whom we now know as Taystee) had been cast for the show and although the two had never worked together before, Samira was thrilled with the prospect. Her wishes came true when she was cast in the first season of the show. “I had no idea even how to tell people what it was,” she laughs, adding that the show was positioned to pioneer Netflix’s streaming model along with a number of others, but the concept had been too new then. As far as working with Brooks, Samira explains that the chemistry was effortless. “She and I just come from the same school – same teachers, same classes. You don’t have to use as much language because you have the same language. It’s what made it easy for us to work together and made our friendship so much stronger than it ever was before,” she says.

cameras are down. “I feel like it’s a great privilege to be able to bring the sisterhood and camaraderie that we have off-screen to our scenes on-screen, and use that chemistry and that organic natural thing that we have. It can get seamless sometimes – the flow of our energy and what we bring while we’re on-screen as well.” As for Poussey, the energetic, hooch-brewing army brat who’s found herself on the wrong side of the law, Samira reveals that her greatest hope for the character is to find love. “I feel like ever since the first season where you sort of find out toward the end of the season that she has a thing for Taystee, she’s been rejected and beat up,” she says. While she won’t admit to any plot spoilers for new episodes, she does say that the fans’ wishes for her character have been in line with her own.

“I feel like there’s something out there for everyone and you just need to find what your love is and sprint towards that”

Indeed, for those of us who know and love the show, it is the friendships between these characters and the intricacies of their dynamic relationships that keep us hooked. “Life imitates art,” Samira admits when asked if the party keeps going once the

We ask Samira how fame has treated her thus far, having been plucked out of the ranks of struggling actors and thrown into the spotlight in just a matter of years. She admits that it often feels like everything has been flipped upside down. “You find out more about yourself when you’re thrown into situations that you’ve never been in before. This fame thing that has really, I feel like, been thrust upon me and my cast mates – it’s a lot to deal with,” she says. While there is no shortage of gratitude for what she refers to as the privilege of being able to practice her craft and impact so many people, fame has reinforced the concepts of family and privacy in her life. “There is a public part of this, me, of this job, but there are some things that are precious that you need to keep for yourself. Family and everything like that.” COM POS UR E M AG AZIN E. C O M

It certainly seems like Samira has struck a balance in her life and her advice for others considering a similar path is noteworthy. “I think that one thing that young actors, or honestly young people need to ask themselves – are you passionate about this and how passionate are you? Going into something because you think it’s going to be glitz and glamour, or you have an idea of what the lifestyle is going to bring you – it’s just not the motivation that should be driving you. I wouldn’t be so happy if I wasn’t in this because I felt like this is the only thing I want to and can do. It’s what I’m supposed to be doing. I feel like there’s something out there for everyone and you just need to find what your love is and sprint towards that.” Samira has been relentless in her sprint. While shooting the last season of OITNB, she took on a role in the upcoming film “37”, inspired by the 1964 brutal murder of Kitty Genovese who was stabbed to death outside of her home and although several of her neighbors witnessed and heard what had happened, none came to her aid. The two projects are very different in tone and shooting them at the same time proved to be a challenge for Samira, but a welcome one. She relied on her schooling and additional research to tackle the character, and even though she admits that at times switching from one role to the other was tricky, she made it work. Samira looks forward to continuing to tackle new projects, but which ones? She doesn’t know, but remains eternally optimistic - a condition she credits to her dream job on OITNB. Those who can’t get enough of Samira and need a fix of the charming smile that has contributed to her lovable character, may find her across glossy magazine spreads. She has recently been named as the face of Christian Siriano, a move into the modeling world she had never anticipated for herself.

“I’m short, I’m like 5”2, and I don’t know, I don’t know why even. It’s something I never thought of but I’m so happy that this thing has become something that’s a part of my life now,” she gushes. For a girl who self-admittedly wears too many jean shirts, Samira’s style is anything but redundant. Her Instagram is filled with photos of what she insists are two people - one in flannel and sneakers and the other in glamorous, red carpet stunners. “There’s a doppelgänger,” she jokes, but attributes the versatility to the empowerment of choice and self-expression. “I think clothes are really powerful in the way they make you feel when you have them on. It brings out different parts of you.” Creative self-expression has been a part of Samira’s life from an early age through arts education, the lack of which now she feels strongly about. “I definitely wanted to go all the way and be an actor,” she says of the program she was in. “There’s also so many kids in those programs and that’s not what they end up doing but it gives them so much confidence and helps them in school.” As budgets across the nation dwindle for these types of programs, Samira insists that having access to them can make all the difference for a young child. It’s something we may have to agree with her on. When she’s not acting or modeling in front of the camera, you can find this girl relaxing at home with a good book. Her shelves are filled with the likes of Shakespeare, mixed in with non-fiction history books - a genre she admits is her favorite. If such a thing were possible, we would find Samira Wiley even more charming than we originally anticipated.

COMPOSURE MAGAZINE x AMIKA By Chelsea Lynn Miller, Amika Pro Educator

Bouncy bombshell hair was everywhere in the 70s—think Farrah Fawcett and Bianca Jagger. And while most of us have long said goodbye to the 70’s (or were a bit too young to remember the psychedelic decade!), we may want to hang on to a few things, including the voluminous waves that swept the nation. With amika products, you can easily recreate the iconic style with these steps. STEP 1 Start by finding your center (or off-center) part. Do not take the part too deep, as it will change the look and give it more of a modern feel. STEP 2 Apply amika Heat Defense Serum from the mid shaft to ends of your hair. Don’t let the word serum scare you; this stuff is super lightweight and preserves the integrity of your hair. STEP 3 Create vertical sections throughout your head. The sections should not line up throughout your head, but rather be put together like bricks would lay. STEP 4 Using the amika 5P Interchangeable Barrel Curler, curl each section of hair using the 32mm barrel (for tighter curls, use the 2518mm barrel). The curler end should always face the ground. STEP 5 As you curl each section of hair, lightly mist amika Headstrong Hairspray onto the curls. STEP 6 Apply a dime size amount of the amika Leave in Cream into the palm of your hands and then “pat” or scrunch this into the ends. STEP 7 Gently comb out the curls with a grooming brush (boar bristle brush) in the direction of the curls in one motion. STEP 8 Finish the look amika Touchable Hairspray for a flexible hold!

ARCONA uses only the finest quality, all natural ingredients that penetrate deep into the cellular layers of the skin to effect real change, resulting in glowing, healthy skin at any age CM: What is the philosophy behind Arcona studio? We are known for changing your skin and have the most loyal clients that have been coming 10+ years monthly, some even weekly. CM: Why do you think getting a spa treatment is important? What kind of services do you provide? A: Receiving regular facials can be perceived as a luxury but it’s part of a healthy lifestyle routine. Seeing your skin therapist regularly also gives you the opportunity to make sure you are using the correct products at home for your skin. What makes Arcona skin care line different compared to the others? Are there new products from Arcona skin care line that you can share to our readers? A: Yes! An advanced eye product called Eye Dew Plus. It gives the eye area a hydrated pillowy twinkle from a unique illuminating ingredient called Liquid Crystals. Arcona products are made in small batches preserving the efficacy and integrity of our ingredients. Arcona ingredients are cold-processed. Cold-processing is labor and time intensive, most skin care products, even the most expensive that may begin with quality ingredients, are heat-processed, which ultimately leaves nutrients lifeless and ineffective. We believe most moisturizers are incapable of penetrating skin and merely sit on its surface, therefore we use lighter weight hydrators to keep skin hydrated from within. Chiral technology which is unique to Arcona. With Chirally correct technology skin receives deeper penetration and less sensitization of ingredients because the skin more readily recognizes the ingredients being delivered. We have often heard the misconception that when a product contains pure and clean, organic ingredients that there is little science and technology, not the case with Arcona. CM: Can you share to our readers some tips for better looking skin?

CM: What is your best selling service so far? Why people love that service? A: Customized Organic Fruit Enzyme peel with contour massage. Our clients also love to add on LED and oxygen spray. The
