FROM THE EDITOR An American author Anne Lamott has taken my thoughts and placed them into a precise expression of words in her book ‘Plan B’. She wrote, “I am going to try to pay attention to the spring, and look up at the hectic trees. Amid the smashing and crashing and terrible silences, the trees are in blossom, and it’s soft and warm and bright. I am going to close my eyes and listen.” It begs the question of whether or not the soft colors and bright patterns that make their appearances during this time of year are simply Spring’s expected uniform, or a guise that is conclusively felt within. As it may be, our cover girl Daniella Alonso commands an answer with her radiant smile painted in a soft berry pink hue, and her revealing expressions of an inner strength that has procured her roles depicting strong women. Throughout this issue, Daniella is in good company with others like Witney Carson, Veronica Dunne, and Jessica Marie Garcia - all women who carry a specific message of self-worth, positive body image, and a confidence that makes them the role models they are today. However, these respected women are not the only ones who know a thing or two about strength and overcoming with persistence. Jonathan Sadowski puts no price or time on feeding his dreams as an actor who gives ‘Young and Hungry’ a whole new meaning for us all. I hope that between the light of our digital screens and nature’s brightness of the Spring season, we will find inspiration within these pages to be a warm voice in our day. Hailing from a small town in Utah, nothing can hold Witney Carson back from achieving her big dreams. At age 18, Witney competed on Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” making it to top 6. In a short span of 2 years, Witney danced her way to becoming a pro for ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars”, ultimately leading her and Alfonso Ribeiro to a 1st place win in Season 19. DWTS is well underway with their newest season and Witney takes a moment with Composure Magazine to share that even she can find herself reveling in fandom. CM: Witney, you of course are a standalone pro in your own right, and at such a young age - do you get tired of hearing people bring that up, your age? WC: I don’t get tired of people bringing up my age at all. It puts things in perspective for me,

as well as giving a sense of achievement and gratitude. Ever since I was little I knew what I wanted to do, and I’ve worked very hard to fulfill my goals! I feel humbled and grateful to be where I am now, and am always looking forward to the future. CM: We’re rooting for #TeamSouleShakers to take it all the way for Season 20! What was your initial reaction upon receiving the news that Chris Soules would be your partner? WC: Well thank you for the support! I was absolutely thrilled to have Chris (The Bachelor) as a partner. I have to admit I am a religious fan of the show and I did watch his season! So when I met Chris, naturally I freaked like a fan girl! I was so excited to have him for season 20. He has great charisma, on and off camera!

little. I remember watching the show as a young aspiring dancer and knowing that’s what I wanted to do when I grew up. That motivation has stuck with me throughout my training as a young adult. I can’t believe I’m here now living my dream, it goes to show anyone can fulfill their dreams if they work hard enough for it! CM: Would you say that there was a significant turning point in your decision to take dancing to a professional level? WC: I think when I was about 12 or 13 I became really serious and devoted every hour I had after school to dance. I began taking extra ballroom privates from outside choreographers and started competing and performing all over the country! It was a way to express myself; it made me feel strong and confident so I stuck with it! CM: We know you as a dancer, but who would you say you are…who is Witney Carson and what part of you would you like people to get to know better? DRESS METAL NORI JEWELRY CHARLES ALBERT

CM: Now that you and Chris have had rehearsals and prepping for each round, what goes through your mind the most when you get on that stage with him? WC: Honestly when I get on stage, I’m in a completely different zone. My only goal is to be there for my partner. It’s so incredibly difficult for a non-dancer (like Chris and many others that have been on the show) to perform something they aren’t comfortable with in front of millions! It’s my job to make sure my partner looks good and feels confident! CM: It’s so incredible to see young talent such as yourself really rise and make strides in your career, and it’s obviously something you are pretty passionate about. Did you always just know this is what you were going to do from a young age? WC: I’ve always been a go-getter since I was

WC: I’m just a normal girl with big dreams and a big heart! Sounds cheesy but it’s plain and simple. I come from a small town in Utah with a great family who supports me one hundred percent. They are the most important to me! I know I was gifted with this talent to be an influence for good. I want to inspire young girls, women, and men to believe that they are capable of anything. Be yourself and believe that you are enough. CM: You have a pinned tweet; it’s a beautiful statement about women never forgetting their divine worth. Can you expand on your thoughts behind that statement? WC: Everyone is unique in their own beautiful way. Women and young girls look at the entertainment world and see unrealistic images of what they think they should look like. It breaks my heart to see young girls not know how special and amazing they are by just being themselves! I hope that I can be a living example by always sticking to what I believe in, and hopefully that will make a difference in some small ways.

Getting Candid With

Jonathan Sadowski What do magic tricks, burritos and philanthropy all have in common? Mention any of them and the 35-year-old actor instantly flashes a smile. They’re just a few of his favorite things when he’s not hitting the small screen, producing or writing scripts. Taking some time away from shooting the ABC Family sitcom Young & Hungry, he sat down with Composure for a lengthy, revealing chat. Here’s what he had to share.

CM: Congratulations on getting renewed for season 2 of Young & Hungry. That season 1 finale was a little crazy – and sad! JS: Punched you right in the feelings. I always say season 1 is very expositional; you’re learning about these characters for the first time, you’re learning about the storyline, you’re setting up the world these characters live in so by the time the finale comes around, you’re just hitting your stride. And I think the writing – I can’t give enough credit to the writing staff on our show and they really built up a great cliffhanger of a finale. Without giving too much away, season 2 picks up right where we left off. It’s like the next day. [My character Josh is] competitive and I think he’s used to getting what he wants, he’s meticulous in life and for the first time in his life, he’s not in control. I think he has to make up for that so [because of] his competitive nature, he’s going to fight for Gaby. He doesn’t like to lose. What I can promise you will happen this season is that there will be a confession, there will be a kiss, there will be a fist fight and I may or may not rip my pants off and dance on a table. The second season is always where you can finally go with these characters on a journey. There are some moments that are just laugh out loud hysterical. CM: When you’re on set and filming, do you ever go off script and just improvise? JS: Funny enough, the last episode we shot, there’s a scene between Emily [Osment] and I, and something [just] wasn’t there. We were missing it. So we had the creator of the show come in and we said, “Let’s try to rewrite this scene.” So Emily and I just sat down and just improvised the entire scene. From beginning to end, we improvised for like three minutes and it completely worked. We just thought about naturally how the scene would go. [With] the level of talent in the actors that I’m surrounded with, it’s a joy to be around them. They can deliver a line so many different ways, so many unique ways, and every way is hysterical. CM: And it takes chemistry. JS: Absolutely. You don’t want to be stagnant, and you don’t want to be stale in your performance, so [it’s important] to have people that could completely adapt and just read you and know what you’re trying to do. CM: Season 1 was 10 episodes, and now season 2 has been bumped up to 21 episodes. How excited are you? JS: It’s amazing. I get to make people laugh for a living. Every week, every Friday night, there are over 200 people who come there to be a part of our show.

There’s nothing like it when they laugh at what you do, or when there’s a dramatic moment and you can hear a pin drop, you know that this entire audience is there with you, like right with you. CM: Did you always want to be an actor who connected with people in that way? JS: Yeah, I remember the first large scale production I ever saw was Phantom of the Opera in Chicago when I was in high school and I had never seen something of that scale and it blew me away. Completely blew me away. And I was like, these guys get to do this for a living. They get to make people walk out of the theater, feeling the way I felt, for a living and I just knew I wanted to do it. CM: When people watch you as an actor, what do you hope they take away from your performance? More comedic or dramatic? JS: I think it’s making people run the whole gamut. You got to make them laugh if you want to make them cry and vice versa. But I think just making them feel something, because not everybody is going to laugh at my joke, not everybody is going to be completely touched when I’m trying to be dramatic. Art is completely up to interpretation – whether it’s a painting, whether it’s music, whether it’s film or theater – so as long as you’re making them feel something, I think you’re going in the right direction. CM: Do you identify with your character on Young & Hungry, Josh? JS: Absolutely. Josh is a big kid, [and also] kind of nerd. He loves Star Wars and Star Trek. CM: Do you consider yourself a nerd? JS: I love magic. I’m a magic nerd. I’m a member of the Academy of Magical Arts at the Magic Castle [in Hollywood]. I’ve been doing magic since I was like 8 years old and I love it. [My friends and I] just sit around and drink scotch and do magic for each other. We’re just complete nerds, but I find it endearing. And Josh is a big kid, too. We’re both incredibly competitive and in [real life] I will compete about anything. Growing up, my mom and dad would yell at me and my brothers, “Stop competing!” It would be anything – who could eat more, who could do this, who’s faster, who can win this game, just nonstop competition and I think Josh is like that too. It’s that complete desire to be the best and I think the other characteristic that we both share is our protective nature. I love my friends and I love my family and I’m incredibly protective of them and I think Josh is the same way. He takes care of people and when his friends suffer, he suffers in a way.

perfect as you can get. You have to push yourself to be better. CM: What pushes you? What drives you? JS: To be the best. I mean, why do anything if you’re not going to be the best at it? The minute I go on cruise control, somebody slap me, because there’s no room for complacency. CM: When you started your career, you were bartending. What pushed you to really break into the business? JS: Well I always wanted to do it. It was a matter of diving in with everything. I didn’t come out here to be a bartender; I came out here to be an actor. My manager at the time, she said, you have 30 days. And it was day 29, I swear to God, and I had booked a pilot. [Then] later that week I booked my role in [the 2006 comedy] She’s the Man. Whatever happened, the stars aligned. CM: Young & Hungry centers around food and you’ve admitted you have a slight obsession with burritos.

CM: Do you credit that drive for getting you to where you are now? JS: I think it helps, yeah. You don’t go into a football game thinking, “I just want to play.” No! You go in with a purpose and I think you have to have an intention whenever you do anything in life. When I moved out to Los Angeles from Chicago, my main thing was that I was not moving back home. No plan B. This is it. I said, “Every time somebody moves back home, that’s one less actor I’m competing with.” It’s like, do you want to be an actor or not? If you study architecture, do you put a time limit on how long it’s going to take to be an architect? No. You want to be an actor or you don’t. So if you want to do it, go out there and go balls to the wall and you stake it out for as long as it takes, [even] if it’s 10 years, 20 years, I mean, is there a price for your dream? Have you ever seen the documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi? It’s an amazing, amazing film. I was out recently with a friend of mine and he simplified the entire premise of the film in a statement that really hit home to me: Do the same thing every day of your life and each day just try to get a little better. It made so much sense to me. If you do the same thing every day and just try to get a little bit better every day, you’ll be as close to

JS: A burrito a day keeps the doctor away [laughs]. They’re amazing. What is not to love about a burrito? It’s the perfect food. It’s just everything. I mean, I could have a burrito at any point of the day. And I’m not talking like a breakfast burrito. I’m talking a regular steak and al pastor burrito for breakfast. My girlfriend knows we’re going for burritos after this [interview]. CM: Is this just burritos you love so much? JS: No, you gotta have scotch too! CM: What’s your scotch of choice? JS: My favorite scotch is Glendronach. I love it. But it depends on what I’m in the mood for. CM: You’re from Chicago, a foodie’s paradise. What’s your go-to when you go back home? JS: Riccobene’s breaded steak sandwich. It’s steak that’s pounded so it’s paper thin and it’s then breaded and deep fried and they put marinara sauce on there with some hot peppers and mozzarella on this marinara-soaked bun. USA Today recently named it the number one sandwich in America. I grew up next to this place. It’s like a few blocks from my house. CM: Now how do you stay in shape? JS: I work out a lot. Every day. I’m really big into weight training and I love lifting weights. I box as well. I used to kickbox and then I broke my leg last

year so I can’t really kick a whole lot anymore so now I have a boxing trainer. It’s good too because I’m hyper active and have a lot of energy so boxing kind of wears me out. CM: Something else that you’re quite passionate about is charity. What compels you to give back? JS: I try to get involved with as many [organizations] as I can. I just think, for me, I have to give back. It can’t be all, “Give me, give me, give me, give me.” Recently a group of my friends and I adopted a family. This lovely lady had three kids and one of them is legally blind who’s 10 years old. They were struggling. She’s a single mom. My friends and I donated over $1,000 in clothes and toys because they didn’t get to have Christmas. So we showed up a few months ago with all these presents for the kids. The look on these kids’ faces, they were like, “These are for us?” We also got them a new couch and gift cards to grocery stores. It felt really good. Growing up, I didn’t come from money by any means. Me and my two brothers, we shared a [tiny] bedroom so sharing is just in my nature. It never even crossed my mind not to share, so whenever someone is in need, you help them, and I thank my parents for [instilling that in me]. Instead of a take, take, take culture, I wish we were more of a give, give, give [culture]. CM: Are there specific charities you’d like to support? JS: I really like Operation Smile [which provides free surgeries to repair facial deformities for kids]. Let’s face it, this is a very superficial world that we live in and it kind of hurts me to see kids who are so selfconscious of their physical appearance. Operation Smile gives them a chance to walk out without any insecurity and be comfortable in their own skin. It’s one of the only plastic surgeries I am an advocate of. CM: Looking ahead career wise, is there any particular role you’re eyeing? JS: I’m up for anything and I love being surprised. Of course, it would be cool to play a spy or superhero, but I love reading the scripts and being surprised and being like, “This is the role I have to do.” It could be in any form. It’s fun when you read something and you’re blown away by it and then you start the campaign to bring it to fruition. Young & Hungry airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. on ABC Family.

t just 13 years old, Haley Ramm’s career took off – literally – when she starred in the 2005 thriller Flightplan opposite Jodie Foster. Since then she’s had a steady stream of appearances on TV’s biggest dramas, including CSI: Miami, Without a Trace and Grey’s Anatomy. Now 23, Haley opens up to Composure about her latest, and perhaps most emotional, role as Brenna Carver in ABC Family’s Chasing Life, navigating the up-and-down rollercoaster of Hollywood and why she looks forward to 6 a.m. call times. CM: You’re currently working on season 2 of Chasing Life. How has your experience on the show been so far? HR: I love working on Chasing Life. It’s my first series so it’s really exciting. I’ve heard horror stories about people being on shows and not getting along with the cast but everyone [at Chasing Life] gets along so well, and I feel lucky to be on a show where we talk about really important topics. People who normally feel like they can’t relate [to certain characters] can relate when they watch this show. I love all the characters that have been written and I love our writers so much. They’re so good at what they do. I think grandma is my favorite character. Rebecca Schull plays my grandma and she’s wonderful to work with. Her old

stories are so much fun to listen to and she’s so wise. CM: You mentioned the show addressing really important topics. Has your own perspective in real life been influenced by the characters on the show? HR: A little bit. I think if I’ve been influenced by the show in any way, it would just be living in the moment. That’s kind of what [the show is] all about: being your truest self and living in the moment. CM: What’s in store for Brenna in this upcoming season? HR: Brenna is going to be maturing a lot throughout this next season. It’s an exciting time and she’s entering adulthood and that goes for all the characters. Everyone matures a little bit. I think the second season is more fun on any show because [as a viewer] you’ve gotten to know the characters and you’ve been through a lot with them. We were on a break for like eight months so I could not be more ready [to start filming]. My call time is 6 a.m. on Monday and I’ve never been so excited to wake up at 6 a.m. in my life. I didn’t know that you could get tired of sleeping in, but you can! CM: Did you ever expect to play this kind of role? Brenna

is a character who’s conflicted in a lot ways while exploring her sexuality. HR: Brenna is bisexual and she doesn’t make any excuses for herself. She is who she is and that’s my favorite thing about her. I love that there’s never a scene where [she] had to explain [herself] to [her] family or friends. It’s kind of just not mentioned and I think that there’s a lot of power in not mentioning it because you are who you are and you should embrace it. It’s a beautiful thing. CM: You’ve now been in Hollywood for more than a decade since moving from Texas to California at a young age. What was that transition like for you as you pursued your acting career? HR: I was so excited. There was never like a moment where I was scared or nervous. I was just so excited about everything and so excited to get into audition rooms. Coming out to L.A. was the best thing ever, but the weirdest thing, too. It’s been fun. There have been a lot of ups and downs but I’m really happy to have grown up here and to have spent my formative years here. CM: Is there something you would tell that young wideeyed Haley Ramm? HR: Yes, don’t stop being wide-eyed! There have been times where I haven’t been so wide-eyed and a little bit jaded. There are things that happen in this business that can take away your excitement so I think just not losing that excitement is what I would tell my [young] self. CM: What’s been the most memorable experience for you as an actress? HR: I remember the table read for Flightplan, my first table read, and watching [my costar] Jodie Foster. She had this scene where she was looking for her daughter and she desperately wanted to find her and she had the tears and everything, and I just thought, “That’s commitment.” During a table read, a lot of people don’t take it very seriously. They just read the words on the page, [but Jodie] gave it her all. So I think that was cool to watch at such a young age because I got to see that’s the best way to do it and I wanted to do it that way: respect the people that you’re working with by taking it seriously.

inspired pieces. HR: I always like to mix vintage with current looks. I go to Forever 21 and get the cheap stuff and then mix it with my vintage stuff. I like collecting things. I have a really big admiration for the past. Even though I wasn’t around for those times, I feel like I fit in there. CM: Is that what inspired you to set up an Etsy shop with your mom? HR: My mom and I have always liked vintage clothing. We used to go shopping for vintage for ourselves and we decided to start doing it for other people because there are so many things when you [go to] a vintage store, like a hat for a man that I can’t wear. [Our Etsy shop] is called Barbie Vintage because my mom’s name is Barbara and everyone called her Barbie in the older days. Secret #2: DIY Lip Serums If you are serious about getting fuller-looking lips without the fillers, try getting into a regimen of incorporating potent serum formulas into your lips. Here is an easy recipe for an allnatural, organic lip treatment: NutriLip Plumping Oil Serum Moisturizes, Plumps and Improves Lip Lines/ Wrinkles

Combine the first three ingredients below in a tiny cup or a shot glass. Cut open a Vitamin E oil capsule and combine with rest of the ingredients. Stir well. Pour product into disinfected recycled lip-gloss tubes or jars. We put a tiny smidge into our old pinkish nude gloss (make sure you’re not allergic or sensitive to cayenne pepper) and used the applicator to stir up the mixture well. The result? A frugal and effective lip plumper! Cayenne pepper also contains high amounts of Vitamin C and is great to have in our diet to speed up metabolism (a bonus for those “accidental” lip-licking between meals and kisses).

CM: We were told you were shy as a child. But you just turned 17, so childhood was like, yesterday. . . and here we are! What’s changed?

CM: Give us some lyric you’ve written, just one line, that has some special meaning to you. . . and what the inspiration behind it is.

SS: I’m finding myself, now that I’m 17. My own style and what I want to do and becoming more confident in who I want to be. I’ve been writing a lot- I’ve been in the studio working on new music and finding my vibe, my sound. It’s a little bit edgier than Butterflies, my first single. It’s really becoming me.

SS: Beautiful tragedies. It’s a song I’m working on about someone who poses a beautiful tragedy. They kind of feed bad vibes to you but you’re still attracted to them or in love with them even though you know they’re bad for you. So that’s a line I love.

CM: Can’t wait to see how you evolve. But tell us about Butterflies. How did that song come to be?

CM: Your talent as a singer is obvious, but tell us about the songwriting aspect of your career. Walk us through your process of writing a song from conception to completion. Where do your lyrics come from?

SS: It’s that feeling you get when you’re nervous around somebody you like. Whether it’s a guy or a girl. It’s just super relatable to so many people. I can definitely relate to it because I’ve been there myself. I know vividly what those butterflies feel like. CM: Tell us what it’s like being home-schooled. Is it tough not being in a classroom? SS: It is hard and takes a lot of discipline but I know music is what I love to do so it works out. Plus it leaves me with so much more time to focus on my music, take classes and better myself. It’s been an awesome thing for me. It’s really allowed me to work harder and do what I love.

SS: I think life experiences inspire me. I love writing about relationships and to look at other people and just observe. I create a scenario of everyday experience and write about that. Like if I’m walking down the street and I see a couple fighting I’ll keep that in my mind, jot down a little note and write about it when I have the chance. CM: And walk us through the actual writing. How does it happen? SS: I usually think of a word and then maybe a full line. I’ll write it down and work through it, trying different

words, and letting it unfold itself. That’s kind of how I write my music. I come up with a melody, then I add few words and I kind of build it from there. I’ll often take it to somebody else for outside thoughts. I often write with my manager Lucas Prata or with a producer and it becomes a collaboration. CM: Your fans are so loyal, particularly on social media. SS: It’s very humbling that they’re so supportive. I wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for them. They’re the ones who have been supporting me and spreading the word about me. It’s just awesome to have that connection. I love using social media to contact my fans and to talk with them. Especially Twitter. I’ll tweet them all the time. I think it’s super important to have a good relationship with them and to be able to talk to them. With my YouTube videos, my fans get to know what style of music I’m listening to or if I change it up a bit they can see my vibe. CM: In your opinion, which artist today is making the biggest waves in the music industry? SS: Demi Lovato. I love how edgy she is. She’s always been real. And I love that. I grew up listening to her, as well. She acts and she does a little bit of dancing and that’s the kind of career I aspire to. To take on multiple types of entertainment. CM: What advice would you give to others pursuing a singing career? SS: Probably a little cliché, but I’d tell them to just follow your dreams. If you love it why do something else. For me I’d rather be a struggling musician than to do something that doesn’t inspire me. And I think happiness is super important. You need to love what you do and you need to be happy doing it. That’s what I’d tell them. Do something you love and if it makes you happy, stick with it. CM: You are currently playing the role of Willow on Liv and Maddie. Can you share a little more about your character?

JMG: She’s always been a confident character and I’ve always loved and admired that about her. However, in the episode that aired, “Rate-aRooney,” it was the first time you actually got to see Willow not confident and a little unsure about herself. It was such a beautiful episode to shoot because I feel like we’ve all been there; we’ve all been picked on at some point in our lives. Playing a character dealing with that, to see her evolve, and come from that place of vulnerability to one of strength, you get to see her deal with that kind of situation and come out of it. So I feel like she’s become even more confident in the fact that she has had to go through something. I think that is where a lot of people get their confidence from; having to overcome something in their life.

JMG: Willow is the most amazing character I’ve gotten to play so far. She’s tough and she’s smart. She would do anything for her friends. The other side of her - she’s so vulnerable and she has such a big heart and I love that I get to play somebody as amazing as that. She’s got a little tiny crush on Joey; I don’t know if everybody knows that! CM: Team #JILLOW! JMG: We are going to make JILLOW happen ladies and gentlemen! CM: Speaking of [Willow], she conveys a very strong

CM: Does that come naturally to you because of a personal experience that you’ve had in the past? For example, the topic of bullying. JMG: Oh I’ve been bullied, let me tell ya! Growing up, I’ve always been overweight and I’ve had psoriasis since I was 10 years old. So there were

first. CM: Can you share more about your literally lifesaving journey?

always things that I have been picked on for. I can’t tell you how many department store fitting rooms I’ve cried in because nothing fit me. Or I can’t show my arms or my legs because of the psoriasis. Growing up, it was tough. But, I realized that it was going to get better and only if I found what I loved in myself. I’ve always said, “you should be your number one fan. You should always be your best friend”, because you’re in this (pointing to her body) your whole life. So you have to make this something that you’re proud of and something that you love. I found that in my humor, I found that in my positive thinking, and it really helped me become the person who I am today. Now it’s almost like, no one can really say anything to me that will deter me from feeling how I am right now; which is a confident, beautiful woman. CM: Can you share with your fans - will there be more of these conflict-type stories? JMG: We have quite a big love-triangle story coming up. I think as far as showing a deeper story, you get to see how two girls should really deal with that and I’m excited for it to show true friendship and how your friend should come

JMG: Yes! About two years ago, I was diagnosed pre-diabetic. That was the shock of a lifetime. When you’re a little kid, you never think that you’re anything but invincible. And me, I’ve always been healthy so I’m like “I’m fine; I don’t have to keep going to the doctor.” I refused to go for a very long time, and then when my family finally pushed me to go, I found out. It was insane. I’m always the type of woman that tells other women and men that they need to be strong and that you can get through anything as long as you are strong enough to overcome it. So I felt like this was the first time where I really had to either put-up or shut-up. I changed everything on a dime. I went to my kitchen and just threw out everything that was bad for me and I realized how much I didn’t have anything left. I learned how to cook because I think the biggest advice that I can give to anybody is to learn proper nutrition. It had me come to terms with the fact that I think that I’m worth living for as long as I possibly can and worth the effort to become healthy. You’re worth the effort it takes to become healthy, and that’s my biggest message I feel. CM: For your audience of the younger generation, body image is so confusing. What can someone do or what positive resources would you point them towards to get on a healthier track? JMG: I think the most important thing is to let down your devices, your cell phones, and realize that there is an entire place outside of your door called “outside”. I can’t tell you how many hours I’ve spent binge watching television and not even [going] outside for days. That was my biggest problem; I was a couch potato. Back when I was much younger, kids played outside and asked “can Joseph come out and play?” That doesn’t happen now. I think if you have to have your devices, then get a workout app or get a healthy eating app. Not something where you’re going to be crash dieting or eliminating whole food groups because that is not a [healthy] thing to do.

I’ve done every diet under the sun and I gained everything back. So it’s really important to just know what it is that you’re putting into your body. That’s my advice to them - put down the devices and go outside and take a walk! CM: Are there other types of roles that you hope to do? JMG: Yes, I can’t tell you enough that when I say that I am an actress inside and out, I want to play every role. I want to play something that’s grittier, a little darker, something I’ve never tried before. I’ve done a lot of comedy and I would love to show my dramatic side as well. But really, I want to be a crime fighter, I want to be a superhero, I want to be a lawyer, or a doctor; honestly, just give me a script and I’ll play it. I think it’s really important to have more ethnic minorities out there, especially women because we are incredible actors if you give us a chance; if you don’t name me ‘Maria’ and put a mop in my hands, you know? I think the industry is changing and I’m really excited about it. CM: Do you have any other projects that you’re working on? JMG: I am writing my first short film that I’m going to direct and act as well. I’m really excited about it! It’s an ambitious adventure, but I’m going to do it! And that’s the thing - I want to be able to direct and have my own production company one day. CM: Can you share more about the short film? JMG: It’s going to be ethnically charged and it’s going to be all about female empowerment, and also about being a minority in this industry. K.C. Undercover star, Veronica Dunne, gets going on her love of thrift shops, Lucille Ball, and why she stands up to bullying!

CM: You’ve been acting since the age of 4! Wow. That’s many years of experience for someone as young as you are. Tell us how it first started and how it’s evolved as you’ve grown up. VD: I started doing theater when I was 4, TV and film when I was 10. It’s been amazing having that many years of training and experience. It’s prepared me for all that’s happening now. CM: We know entertainment is in your blood, your father being Murphy Dunne. We’re big ‘Blues Brothers’ fans. Can you tell us how he has influenced you? VD: I was so lucky. I mean, this business can be rough, but to have someone that I could look up to and to tell me the realities of this industry. He really gave me a

great foundation to stand on and the confidence that I am enough. When I walk into the room I am who am, and if it’s not the right part there will always be another. He’s taught me so much, especially when it comes to comedy. Such a funny guy. He’s just given me so much. CM: Your bio talks about your desire to be a strong role model for young women everywhere. Can you elaborate on that? Why is that important to you? VD: I’ve been given an incredible platform by being on Disney. So many young girls look up to the female roles on that network. I know I did. And I think growing up a girl in today’s society is really hard with all the Photoshop and airbrushing. All these girls who are portrayed as ‘perfect’ when in reality, no one is perfect. We all have our flaws and

there’s something beautiful about every single one of us. I think that’s really important to acknowledge. I want to be a real girl that others can look up to. Another issue that matters to me is bullying. I was badly bullied throughout childhood. Because of that, it’s become something I want to stand against publicly. I’ve been given this opportunity and I think it’s important to use in a way that benefits others. This fact that girls can look up to me, and do look up to me, is an honor and a privilege. I want to make the best of it. CM: What’s your ideal medium to work in? Film? TV? Stage? VD: Honestly, I couldn’t pick one. I love them all. Each one serves its purpose and fulfills me artistically in a different way. The feeling that you get from being on stage differs so much from that of film or TV. You’re creating art in unique ways. I aspire to do all of it and in some ways need that diversity to be completely fulfilled as an actor. Each medium brings a different aspect to my life that I need and love.

I remember I would pretend to be sick so that I could sit in bed and watch that show. Sorry middle school teachers! CM: Let’s talk about your style. Do you follow trends or do you do your own thing? VD: My style, I’d say, is bohemian vintage chic. I don’t know. It’s hard to categorize a style with certain adjectives because style changes all the time. But I love going to thrift stores. I could spend hours there just browsing and digging through clothes. But yes, sometimes trends are great to follow. It’s great to get interesting ideas from other people. I know New York Fashion Week just happened and of course to see all those amazing designer shows- I get inspired. That being said, I also think it’s great to come up with your own quirk or edge to differentiate yourself from the crowd. K.C. Undercover airs Sundays 8:30/7:30c on Disney Channel.

CM: Any specific career goals? VD: I just want to create beautiful art that inspires people. The fact that I’ve been given an opportunity to do that is astounding. CM: Who have your strong role models been? Any women in particular who have inspired you? VD: I love Jennifer Lawrence. She’s so awesome, down to earth, and talented. Meryl Streep, obviously. As far as my idols growing up- I’d say Lucille Ball. I think she is where I got a lot of my comedic inspiration. Your hair doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to be smothered with many different products. Our hair has natural oils and vitamins that are produced throughout the day. Try to stick with one hair brand to receive better results. Choose Satin Pillow cases or covers Sleeping on a satin pillow cover is known to reduce hair breakage due to less friction as we sleep. Others materials such as cotton or polyester are very rough in texture, which causes more friction against the hair. Cool Water is Healthy for Hair I know most of us use warm water when shampooing, conditioning, or rinsing our hair. Warm water dries out the hair and closes the cuticles, but cold water opens them up to allow shampoo and conditioner to do their job. Take your warm shower or bath, but remember to use cold water when rinsing your hair. Avoid Teasing your Hair As a hair stylist I hear a lot of clients saying that teasing the hair gives it more volume, which it does, but the consequences just arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t worth it. Doing so destroys the texture of your hair. Instead of this, use a volumizer at your roots and flip your hair over while you are blow-drying. This will lift your roots and create the fullness and volume you are trying to create with teasing.

How does the average woman pull of the fringe trend without looking like a fashion victim or a seventies wild child? Fringe can either go very right or very wrong. Here are tips to keeping on the good side of the fringe trend.

DO NOT DO HEAD-TO-TOE FRINGE It is simply too overwhelming to be dripping in fringe. Even if you are wearing one fringed item, keep the fringe relatively short in length. Instead of a long fringe skirt, a shorter above the knee skirt will be chic, appropriate and on trend.

THINK ABOUT A FRINGED ACCESSORY Perhaps a fringed item of clothing is too bold for some. Try a fringed shoe, purse or scarf instead! This will pull a look together that is both relevant and eye catching.

OPT FOR NEUTRAL COLORS A bright orange fringed jacket will not work for most women. But a black fringed jacket? Yes please! Hot pink fringed pants? No. Camel colored fringed short skirt? Double yes! inspire her own gender, but the entire Hispanic community. Growing up, when she would see Latina actresses on TV, she would feel a sense of pride. By finding her own success, she sees herself continuing that for young women today looking for confidence and motivation. Her Latina pride gives her all the more reason to stay motivated. She mentioned how her grandmother, the first of her family to move to the U.S., was the most important person in her life. “I always wanted to make her proud. . . and thinking of the powerful female roles I’ve taken on, they are things she would be proud of.” We are sure of it, Daniella. In fact, with women gaining more and more recognition and a rapidly growing Hispanic community, we envision her as the woman of tomorrow. And we love what we see! Forget the strength of ten men. CM: This idea of sophistication and simplicity, it sounds so straightforward, but we know very well it isn’t easy. As fashion designers, how do you achieve that in your pieces? 2ND SKIN: Our style is focused on our love for the modern, the sophisticated, and the woman who finds strength in her femininity. The woman who feels comfortable in her own skin. There is a timeless sophistication to it. That’s The 2nd Skin Co. woman! CM: Pret-á-porter and Atelier are your two lines. Can you describe to us what differentiates them? 2ND SKIN: Our daily bread is our Pret-á-porter, which gets us into the high end commercial market. Our Pret-á-porter is only distributed in the exclusive stores around the world. The Atelier is the more exclusive private collection - “haute couture.” It is made especially with the client in mind and a “step by step” process. These are our one-of-a-kind pieces. CM: You do both high end pieces as well as everyday casual wear. Why both? 2ND SKIN: It is important to share the love of fashion for all occasions. It is impossible for us to be passionate designers if we dedicate our love only to

one or the other. CM: Your pieces have graced many red carpets. Can you describe the sensation of watching your work be proudly displayed on some of the biggest stages in the world? 2ND SKIN: It is an honor, and we have a strong sense of pride when we see these amazing women wearing our designs. As you know, many celebrities have a wide range of selections, so when they choose The 2nd Skin Co, it is quite a feeling! CM: You’ve been described as ‘fresca, urbana, y actual’ or ‘fresh, urban, and real.’ Take us into that. Why these descriptions? 2ND SKIN: Fresh is young and simple. Urban is when a women has a personal inner cool. They wear our designs without thinking it’s ‘too much’ but rather it’s the ‘perfect and complete choice.’ Real is the feeling like it’s your ‘2nd skin!’ CM: How do you choose the colors of your pieces? ‘Dusty rose’ particularly stood out to us. They often dictate the vibe of your lines. 2ND SKIN: Well we start with the selection of the fabric. Then the colors have to fit the story that we

have in our mind. Nude we use quite often in most of our collections because we find it to be an “effortless classic” color. CM: You both have backgrounds in textiles and it clearly shows in your work with the versatility of material- how has this helped to define 2nd Skin? 2ND SKIN: This background in textile has given us the immediate know-how to understand just by feeling the fabric if it has the potential to be a part of our collection. The fabric is the beginning point. CM: Can you tell us a little about who you are as individuals? Why did you choose to become designers? 2ND SKIN ANTONIO: It was during my childhood that I knew this was my first and only love. There is no other story for me. Just this. “Love at first sight.” 2ND SKIN JC: My first memory and true realization that this was my love was when I saw my sister on stage as a ballerina. I was captured by the grace and elegance of the costumes, it was a bit later for me but it was, and is, forever. CM: You recently did a line of clothing inspired by the fashion of the 70’s at the ‘Evening at Kaufmanns’ event. Why the love for this decade? How were you able to capture it? 2ND SKIN: How can you really be a designer and not be affected by the 70’s? The decade of chic and color and pool parties. The age of revolution…The style from this era never lost the beat. CM: Your pieces exude this seductive femininity while keeping a strong sense of confidence, boldness, and elegance. We love this contrast. Is this something you envision for women who wear your clothes? 2ND SKIN: Yes! This is the 2nd skin woman… confident without fear! CM: “Más que Guapa” or “More than Beautiful.” This is the slogan we’ve heard when it comes to 2nd Skin Co. Tell us about this idea. You’re clearly bringing beauty to women all over the world- we have our own opinions on this, but in your words, what is the “más” you bring? 2ND SKIN: The “más” for us is confidence and the desire for something new…. Never to say I already have too much in my closet but rather… let’s make some space for something new!

CM: I read somewhere that Showroom Joplin began with two young jewelry designers. Is that true? If so, how? JOPLIN: Yes, this is true. Ali is designer of Amarilo jewelry and Stella is designer at Haati Chai jewelry. Prior to designing jewelry, Stella worked in PR and marketing at several firms and also developed the visual branding on projects for record labels such as Interscope and Sony. In the meantime, Ali was pursuing her degree in business and law. Eventually, they began their own jewelry lines, and met each other by being fans of one another’s work. As designers, they both wanted design to be the strongest aspect of their work. However, after negligible experiences of outsourcing PR and marketing, they never felt satisfied and took matters on their own for their jewelry lines. Initially Joplin was an accessory based showroom and has since transitioned into curating a collective of everything from ready-to-wear, gowns, shoes, clutches and accessories, and of course, jewelry. CM: And why Fashion PR? What made you want to bring such diverse designers together under one roof? JOPLIN: We framed the brands we curate around our personal taste, mixed with current needs of our celebrity and stylist networks that expressed a demand for a one-stop-shop, without sacrificing quality and style. Fast forward, Showroom Joplin is currently a collective of brands that can shift you through all different forms of projects - whether it’s ready-to-wear, evening wear, or editorial worthy pieces. CM: Every time I stop by the showroom, it seems everyone is actually excited to be at work. How did you bring together such an awesome group of people? And who is that adorable pitbull I see when I drop by? JOPLIN: We firmly believe that Showroom Joplin is only as strong as the people behind it. We are so thrilled to be working hand in hand with our awesome team, who are driven, passionate, and fun. Ali and I both believe that we are responsible for creating our own

success. We build our team with this same outlook. This foundation is everything to a business and we all work as a team everyday with this idea in mind, which is essential in this fast paced environment. Aside from picking qualified individuals, we strongly keyed in on different personality types which would work collaboratively best. We are also huge animal lovers. We are those people that find a stray and keep it. Needless to say, we wouldn’t be the same without Taj (Stella’s pitbull), one of three of our regular animal babies that we bring with us to work. CM: I recently saw that your jewelry line Amarilo landed on the ears of Tyra Banks. How did that feel? JOPLIN: This was amazing of course. She reached out to us to dress her new hairstyle and her focus was ear-candy. Since then she has become an official fan. CM: Can you tell us more of the celebrity placements you’ve landed and who you would want next on that list? JOPLIN: Last year alone we’ve had Lana Del Rey, Solange, Anne Hathaway, Nick Jonas, The Kardashian, Jenner girls, Ashley Tisdale, and Candice Swanepoel, just to name a few. CM: I love the simplistic and modern aesthetic of your showroom. Was there a reason behind the design choice? JOPLIN: We are obsessed with the minimalist approach. As designers, both of us are attracted to quality pieces with eccentric details with regards to clothing. Jewelry is the polishing touch of our ensemble. We translated this same approach in the design of our showroom. We wanted a clean crisp space with the main focus on the products. CM: Where do you see Showroom Joplin in the next 5yrs? JOPLIN: Showroom Joplin has plans to expand to the East Coast and to have another office in New York. In addition, we plan to further develop into men’s selection.
