2011/12 CONCACAF Champions League
Media Guide
About CONCACAF The Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF) is the regional governing body for the sport and one of six continental entities that administers the game, along with FIFA, globally. Formed in 1961 from the merger of the Football Confederation of Central America and the Caribbean (CCCF ) and the North American Football Confederation NAFC), CONCACAF has 40 member associations, from Canada in the north to Guyana in the south. As the administrative body for the region, CONCACAF organizes competitions, offers technical and administrative courses and promotes football throughout the region. Competitions are coordinated for clubs and national teams, including qualifying tournaments for the FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Women's World Cup and FIFA tournaments at under-17, under-20 and under-23 youth levels, as well as the FIFA Beach Soccer and FIFA Futsal World Cups. Additionally, the CONCACAF Gold Cup – the Confederation’s championship for men’s national teams – is conducted once every two years. The Caribbean Football Union (CFU) and the Union Centromericana de Fútbol (UNCAF) are two regional entities that support CONCACAF by organizing qualification events for men's and women's national sides, plus club teams, for various Confederation tournaments.

About the CONCACAF Champions League The CONCACAF Champions League is the Confederation's annual club championship. It was inaugurated in the 2008-2009 season, replacing the Champions Cup, which had decided the region's best team since 1962. Featuring 24 squads from CONCACAF's three sub-regions -- North America, Central America and the Caribbean -- the Champions League is played in three stages: the Preliminary Round, Group Stage, and Championship Round. Berths for the 24 teams are allocated by country or, in the case of the Caribbean, by region. The 16 Preliminary Round teams face-off in two-leg playoffs. The pairings are determined by a draw, which also divides the teams for the Group Stage. No two teams from the same country may play each other in the Preliminary Round or Group Stage. Two teams from each four-team group advance to the quarterfinals, with each group winner drawn to face a runner-up from one of the other groups. A draw establishes the quarterfinal pairings and determines potential semifinal matches. Atlante won the inaugural title in 2009, beating fellow Mexican side Cruz Azul 2-0 on aggregate in the two-leg final. A year later, another Mexican club, Pachuca, defeated Cruz Azul for the crown. In 2011, Monterrey continued Mexico’s championship streak, overcoming the USA’s Real Salt Lake 3-2 on aggregate.
The winner of the CONCACAF Champions League qualifies for the FIFA Club World Cup.
