JAMAICA & MEXICO ADVANCE TO SEMIFINALS 19.11.2006: Jamaica and Mexico advanced to the 2006 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup™ Semifinals after defeating Panama and Trinidad & Tobago, respectively, in the first round held at the Tropical Park Stadium in Miami, Florida USA. Audia Sullivan and Venicia Reid scored for Jamaica in the 2:0 win over Panama in the first encounter in Miami. The reggae girlz have outscored their opponents 38-0 so far and have not conceded a goal in 574 minutes in CONCACAF qualification. The victory also secured Jamaica the Caribbean berth to the women’s tournament at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil. In the other 2006 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup™ First Round match, goals by Maribel Dominguez, Monica Gonzalez and Patricia Perez led Mexico to a 3:0 win over Trinidad & Tobago. CANADA & USA PROGRESS TO FIFA WOMEN’S WORLD CUP CHINA 2007 22.11.2006: Canada and USA progressed to the FIFA Women’s World Cup China 2007 after posting victories over Jamaica and Mexico, respectively, in the semifinals of the 2006 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup™ at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California USA. Canada took a 1:0 lead just before halftime with a goal by Christine Sinclair against Jamaica, who conceded their first goal in 614 minutes played in CONCACAF qualification. Rhian Wilkinson and Sinclair added goals in the second half for the maple leafs in 51st and 71st minutes, respectively, while Melanie Booth closed out the scoring with two minutes remaining. In the other CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup™ semifinal, two goals by Abby Wambach in the 10th and 64th minutes, respectively, led the USA to a 2:0 win over Mexico. The victories by Canada and USA also secured their places in the women’s tournament at the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil. USA WINS 2006 WOMEN’S GOLD CUP 26.11.2006: The USA won the 2006 CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup™ after defeating Canada 2:1 after extra time in the finals held at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California. Leslie Osborne opened the scoring for the stars & stripes in the sixth minute, but Randee Hermus got the equaliser for the maple leafs with 60 seconds remaining in the first half. After a scoreless second half, the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup™ went into extra time for a second time in its brief tournament history and the Most Valuable Player, Kristine Lilly, got the game-winner for the USA via a penalty kick with seconds remaining in the final period. The stars & stripes captured their third Women’s Gold Cup title and sixth overall Confederation Championship, while extending their unbeaten streak in CONCACAF tournament play to 24 matches. The USA and Canada have also earned two of the CONCACAF direct qualification berths to the FIFA Women’s World Cup China 2007.
