Day 5

USA WIN CONCACAF TITLE; MEXICO TAKE THIRD 12.04.2008: The USA won the 2008 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualification after a 6:5 victory on penalties over Canada in the final held at the Estadio Olímpico Benito Juarez in Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua in Mexico. After a scoreless 90 minutes of play, Carli Lloyd gave the USA the lead in the 108th minute of extra time, but Melissa Tancredi scored the equalizer for Canada eight minutes later to send the encounter to penalty kicks. Angela Hucles, Lloyd, Heather O’Reilly, Leslie Marie Osborne, Christine Rampone and Mary Abby Wambach all scored for the Stars & Stripes, while Lori Chalupny’s shot was saved by the Maple Leafs’ goalkeeper Erin McLeod. Meanwhile, Canada got goals from Kara Lang, Clare Rustad, Christine Sinclair, Tancredi and Rhian Wilkinson, but Martina Franko's shot missed the target and Brittany Timko’s kick was saved by the USA goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart. Prior to the final, the USA and Canada already had qualified to the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament Beijing 2008. In the third-place match, a goal by Maria Lourdes Gordillo in the 69th minute gave Mexico a 1:0 triumph over Costa Rica.
