First responders share a common goal – to get back home to their families at the end of their shift. That said, they know taking risks is a big part of the job. Just goes with the territory. But given a spike in recent attacks on first responders, fire departments nationwide are beefing up body armor, increasing firearm safety training, and promoting laws to allow firefighters, paramedics and EMTs to carry a firearm while on duty. First responders often walk head-on into life-or-death situations, which is why Texas introduced a bill to give them the protection they need, the ability to keep firearms on them when responding to a call.

“First responders do not need to perform a peace officer role, but they certainly have the right to protect themselves,” Texas State Rep. John Wray contends. Jamie Hensley has worked as a paramedic in Tennessee for almost 30 years, and has responded to his fair share of dangerous calls. “I have had several guns and knives pulled on me throughout the years and one time we were held at gun point,” Hensley said. A petition created on change.org is calling on the Tennessee State government to make it legal for first responders to carry a concealed weapon. “I’ve seen a big switch over the years to where it is becoming more violent, you see a lot more violence than you used to,” Hensley said.
